My closing keynote from the inaugural UX Homegrown conference in New Zealand. It focussed on the need to bridge the perceived gap between design thinking and UX, building on my previous "Beyond Design Thinking" presentation. It identifies the richness and diversity of both approaches and how they are better when they are closely connected, especially when framed in a digital context.
I don't present from notes, so they aren't included in the presentation, so you just see text from the slides. I am currently writing a blog post about the presentation, which I will add a link to in due course.

Introduction to Design Thinking:
“Design Thinking” has rapidly moved to the forefront of the current management process as a fresh take not just on how to rethink key products and services, but also how to reframe everyday processes and projects. In an effort to create a cross-company culture of innovation and collaboration, businesses all over the world are taking a page from design firms, and realizing the rewards. Check out what is all about.

Motivated by curiosity and a strong conviction that the tools and methods of design thinking ignite innovative ideas and solutions, a group of Portland-based, like-minded practitioners set out to survey the local landscape. Our goal: to uncover the tactics, challenges, benefits and themes surrounding design thinking in our community.
This is the result.
We found more than a dozen common themes and insights. Some of them speak directly to the benefits of a design thinking approach. Some express deep challenges to making that approach work in the real world. In all cases, we are pleasantly surprised by the conviction, passion, and commitment to overcoming those challenges and sharing the benefits of design thinking. !

The design thinking transformation in businessCathy Wang
Presented at Webvisions Barcelona 2015 By Cathy Wang & Nuno Andrew
The definition of design is shifting from being a noun to a verb. We see it moving away from arts and craft into a methodology of delivering value. Adapting to this shift, designers and changemakers are forming a new way of design thinking.
As designer, not only are we crafting products / services, but we are also learning to see a much bigger system with a deep connection to business factors. How can we influence businesses with design thinking in order to build a solid business platform that delivers meaningful products / services.
Systems thinking is an approach to problem solving. Businesses are an intricate ecosystem, from how the organisation is structured, to people, to commercial planning, to processes. As designers, we practice systems thinking everyday. How do we use this knowledge to craft a business? This, is business design.
In this session, we want to explore what business design means. How to use what we know, as designers, to build stronger businesses? As we continue to adapt design methodologies and systems thinking to a business context, what other manifestations that will evolve? How can design thinking be leveraged in even the most straight-laced silos of a business such as Human Resources and Finance? How do we give design thinking the space it needs in the face of traditional business practice? And most importantly, how do we use our existing design thinking knowledge, to design businesses?

How can an industry that places empathy at the core of its practice ignore the big problems facing South Africa and the continent? In a rapidly changing design landscape will UX designers even be relevant in the future? UX designers exist at a unique interdisciplinary juncture and it gives us the opportunity to create inspiring responses to these questions. With the maturity of design thinking, social innovation, and lean startup, we are uniquely placed to re-apply our skills to find new relevance and greater impact in doing work that matters. But taking action is not easy, even if it can be known what is to be done. In this talk David will explore the new mindsets, skills and attitudes UX designers need to adopt to shift from merely doing design to becoming design activists.

Systemic Design Principles & Methods (Royal College of Art)Peter Jones

basic approach of understanding what's design thinking and how could we benefit from this approach in terms of business.
Nature heals, inspires creativity, and increases wellbeing. This is no longer a fancy thought, but these days is seen as an undisputed fact among researchers across a range of disciplines. At the same time, nature inspires designers, architects and painters alike. However, what is it that is so important in nature? This question remains largely unanswered, but its relevance for designers cannot be overstated. In this session, we bring together insights from design research, psychology and healing environments so as to: a) inform the audience on state-of-the-art findings from nature-based research, b) show how nature-based stimuli are currently used in a Dutch healing environment and to what effect, and c) demonstrate how such insights can be used to design multi-sensory nature based prototypes.

Toward A Constraint-Oriented Pragmatist Understanding Of Design CreativityPeter Dalsgaard
Slides from our presentation of the paper Toward A Constraint-Oriented Pragmatist Understanding Of Design Creativity at the International Conference on Design Creativity (ICDC) in Glasgow, September 2012. The paper explores the potentials of pragmatist philosophy to enrich the discourse on design creativity in general and the concept of constraints specifically. We argue that pragmatism can inspire and inform the study of constraints in design creativity by offering a coherent and well-developed frame of understanding how designerly inquiry unfolds as a complex interplay between the designer and the resources at hand in the situation, which may continuously alternate between constraining and enabling roles, or even take on both roles simultaneously.
Systemic Design Principles & Methods ISSS 2014Peter Jones
Research paper presentation at ISSS 2014: Design Research Methods for Systemic Design: Perspectives from Design Education and Practice
The recent development of systemic design as a research-based practice draws on long-held precedents in the system sciences toward representation of complex social and enterprise systems. A precedent article, published as Systemic Design Principles for Complex Social Systems (Jones, 2014) established an axiomatic and epistemological basis for complementary principles shared between design reasoning and systems theory. The current paper aims to establish a basis for identifying shared methods (techne) and action practice (phronesis). Systemic design is distinguished from user-oriented or industrial design practices in terms of its direct relationship to systems theory and explicit adoption of social system design tenets. Systemic design is concerned with higher-order socially-organized systems that encompass multiple subsystems in a complex policy, organizational or product-service context. By integrating systems thinking and its methods, systemic design brings human-centered design to complex, multi-stakeholder service systems as those found in industrial networks, transportation, medicine and healthcare. It adapts from known design competencies - form and process reasoning, social and generative research methods, and sketching and visualization practices - to describe, map, propose and reconfigure complex services and systems.
In this Power Hour session, Laurent Bernard will introduce Steelcase’s Workplace Future team, while Joyce Bromberg will discuss how the global office furniture manufacturer uses its human-centered design research methodology to design a corporate learning classroom that enables social learning and the co-creation of content. She will focus on the power of compelling stories and photos to help achieve change inside an organization.

Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

Transforming Brand Perception and Boosting Profitabilityaaryangarg12
In today's digital era, the dynamics of brand perception, consumer behavior, and profitability have been profoundly reshaped by the synergy of branding, social media, and website design. This research paper investigates the transformative power of these elements in influencing how individuals perceive brands and products and how this transformation can be harnessed to drive sales and profitability for businesses.
Through an exploration of brand psychology and consumer behavior, this study sheds light on the intricate ways in which effective branding strategies, strategic social media engagement, and user-centric website design contribute to altering consumers' perceptions. We delve into the principles that underlie successful brand transformations, examining how visual identity, messaging, and storytelling can captivate and resonate with target audiences.
Methodologically, this research employs a comprehensive approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses. Real-world case studies illustrate the impact of branding, social media campaigns, and website redesigns on consumer perception, sales figures, and profitability. We assess the various metrics, including brand awareness, customer engagement, conversion rates, and revenue growth, to measure the effectiveness of these strategies.
The results underscore the pivotal role of cohesive branding, social media influence, and website usability in shaping positive brand perceptions, influencing consumer decisions, and ultimately bolstering sales and profitability. This paper provides actionable insights and strategic recommendations for businesses seeking to leverage branding, social media, and website design as potent tools to enhance their market position and financial success.
