Muscle hypertrophy is an increase in the size of skeletal muscles due to muscle cells becoming larger. It occurs through two processes: sarcoplasmic hypertrophy which increases glycogen storage and myofibrillar hypertrophy which enlarges muscle attachments and tissues. Bodybuilders and athletes use strength training, diets, and supplements to promote muscle hypertrophy through both pathways to develop uniquely large muscles, though no two people experience identical growth.
