Huntington's disease is a genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. It is caused by a mutated gene that results in elongated repeats of the amino acid glutamine, which leads to the death of neurons in the basal ganglia. The primary symptoms include movement abnormalities such as chorea, cognitive decline, and psychiatric issues like depression. While there is currently no cure, treatment aims to manage symptoms and provide overall support through diet, exercise, and psychosocial interventions to help patients live as positively as possible.
