2. Essay about Commentary on Book Two of Herodotus
Histories...
Introduction This paper will offer a commentary on Herodotus Histories 2.129
135. Book Two of Histories concerns itself with Egypt; specifically chapters 99 182
detail rulers of Egypt both legendary and actual. Book Two is distinct from the
other books in Histories as it is in this book that we predominantly experience
Herodotus as an investigator. More precisely it is in Book Two that Herodotus
treats first person experience not as direct evidence but as a method of assessing
the accounts of others. Chapters 129 135 provide us with the tale of King
Mycerinus as recounted by whom Herodotus refers to in 2.127 as simply
Г†GYPTIOI . These Egyptiansare referred to at various points in Book Two and at
times appear to refer to what might... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This portrait of Mycerinus as a kind ruler is an interesting one and appears again in
Diodorus Siculus Library of History. However, despite his stated low opinion of
Herodotus earlier work, Diodorus account of Egypt undoubtedly has Herodotean
threads running through it and for this reason alone cannot be used to support the
story of Mycerinus presented in Herodotus Histories. Alan B. Lloyd has suggested
that the view of Mycerinus as a benign ruler may have come about due to the
relatively small size of his pyramid in contrast to those of Chephren and Cheops.
This argument is given further credence when it is considered that one of the
theories proposed for the reduction in size of Mycerinus pyramid was that the
Pharaoh began to devote more resources to the construction of temples. However,
Herodotus tale of Mycerinus can just as easily be read, albeit in an unusual way, as
an example of the dangers of hubris. This tale also contains some of the motifs and
anti motifs of tyrants as described in the speech of Otanes at 3.80. The conventions
in Otanes speech appear frequently when Herodotus talks about despotic rulers in
Histories. This theory of a hubristic Mycerinus character formed as part of a
tyrannical tradition in Histories will be dealt with later in this paper.

The three principal elements have become identified in practice within the
institutional model of welfare. The key elements are social protection, and the
provision of welfare services on the basis of right. (Spicker2014) The social
welfare in the UK is very different in practice for example benefits and services are
delivered at minimum level as the coverage it widespread and can be too costly or
even extensive. The social protection in which the welfare state provided is
irregular and unpredictable and the services are rationed very tightly. As the
services have been contracted out to self reliant providers the control over the
quality and reliability of social protection had been even more difficult to maintain.
(Spicker2014) In1948, the Nation Health Services separated both older people and
disabled people into two categories one group who they thought was sick and the
other group for the people needing care and attention. The people who were thought
to be sick were placed in hospitals and the people who were thought to need care
and attention were placed in residential homes. The local authorities were able to
charge for the individuals using th residential homes even if they were deemed as

5. The War And The Reality Of War
The attitudes to war and the reality of war are presented and developed in the play,
Henry V and a selection of WW1 poems in a variety of ways. Parts of the play can be
linked in with WW1 poems such as The Soldier by Rupert Brooke, Who s for the
Game by Jessie Pope, Suicide in the Trenches by Siegfried Sassoon and Dulce Et
Decorum Estby Wilfred Owen. The Henry V play is set in England in the early
fifteenth century. The political situation in England is tense: King Henry IV has
died, and his son, the young King Henry V, has just assumed the throne. Henry lays
claim to certain parts of France, based on his distant roots in the French royal
family. However, the Dauphin of France insults King Henry by sending tennis balls
in response to these claims, which shows us that he is trying to imply that King
Henry cannot be serious, and that he is immature and childish like he was before he
became the King of England. Nonetheless, Henry gives a fitting reply and decides to
invade France.
In Henry V, a positive attitude to war is presented with patriotism, honour and glory
which can be linked with The Soldier poem written by Rupert Brooke. In the play,
King Henry delivers many speeches as he understands the power of his words to
draw out action. His speeches are meant to stir soldiers morale and offer motivation,
inspiration and encouragement to the soldiers. King Henry uses his charisma as an
effective tool; as for Henry, the act of speech and rhetoric is a

this story is when the couple runs runs into a nearby forest, here there are many

the eyes of Demetrius. This causes him to fall in love with Helena. The falling
action of this story is when Puck and Oberon find Titania in love with Bottom, so
that the two can celebrate the successes of their revenge. The denouement of the
story is when Puck goes to the palace to tie up all of the loose ends.

9. If there is a first person narrator, is that person a major character or a minor
character observing the main action?
If there is a first person character that person is a major character. This is because the
character is involved in the story and not just observing the main character.
10. If the narration is in third person, is the narrator omniscient (able to see anything
and tell us what is in the characters minds), or is there limited omniscience so that we

If the narration is in the third person the narrator would have limited omniscience.
This is because the different characters can only see into their own mind.

Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee (ROBERT DUVALL), Thomas quot;Stonewall

Capt. Alexander Sandie Pendleton (JEREMY LONDON).
The movie Gods and Generals is a portrayal of the actions that were illustrated very
eloquently and captivatingly in the book Gods and Generals, written by Jeff Shaara.
The movie even though was less than mediocre in its appeal was full of accurate
historic facts. All of the battles, Manassas Junction, Antietam, and Chancellorsville,
all occurred. The battle at Manassas shows the Federal troops clearly running from

The Northern men are not shown much. Only Capt. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain
is portrayed, leaving out General Hancock, a major player in the beginning of the
Civil War. This causes questions about there importance and if they were fighting
for the proper reasons. A lot is left to the imagination about the North. The
Southerners are all represented well and thoroughly throughout the film. Lee is
portrayed as a very kind hearted religious old man who has the respect of his troops
and is out to win this war. Jackson is given the most glory as this film includes him
in almost every other scene. He is also given a great light of respect from his troops
and all around him. Even Jeb Stuart, who in real life was pompous and egotistical of
himself and his troops, was given a light of respect by all including Lee which was
not seen at all in real life (Gods and Generals the book.) In all the Southerners were
surrounded in this great white light while the Northerners were not even given there
few shining moments in fame during the beginning of the Civil War.
This movie held a great bias to the Southerners. There was one major Northern
character, Chamberlain, comparing to the numerous southern gentleman. Stonewall
Jackson was the main character in this movie and the movie seemed to be trying to
make the movie a biography of Jackson during the Civil War.
The purpose of this film was to make a movie out of
8. Maus By Art Spiegelman Essay
The graphic novel Maus by Art Spiegelman is a frame narrative of the Holocaust
experience in the World War II. The story is divided into two sections with the first
part of the story Spiegelman interviewing his father Vladek about his family life and
the agony of genocide survival whereas the second part the author reveals his father s
story. This essay focuses on various aspects of the narrative that I find fascinating.
Given that the Holocaust is the worst genocide in human history, the first intriguing
element of the story is Vladek s endurance and courage to tell his story despite the
torment and psychological trauma of a Holocaust survivor. Talking about such
horrific experience of abuse and brutality has the tendency to cause a flashback to the
events and result in emotional breakdown. Furthermore, the author s use of animal
allegory as literary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Spiegelman allegorizes the Germans as cats and the Jews as mice what shows
German superiority over their victims. Additionally, the narrative technique of a
backstory clearly shows that the author considers different forms of storytelling and
this complexity forms a brilliant literary work. Due to the fact, there is a transition
period from past and present events, it does not distract the reader from the main
theme of the story. Despite the intricacy of the plot Spiegelman embodies the stories
to be interconnected. Another interesting aspect of this graphic novel is the illustration
form. Spiegelman uses miniature panels combined with images and dialogue
balloons which is a distinct approach to diminish the hardship of the matter without
degrading its affection. Furthermore, the contrast in the relationship with Vladek s
second wife Mala in comparison to Spiegelman s mother Anja is another noteworthy
element of the story. By comparison of Vladek as a character

11. The Kyoto Protocol Extension Is Worthwhile
Introduction
In the face of climate change, reducing greenhouse gas emissions is not only a nation
s essential task but also a global duty. Because of poorly regulated emissions, some
greenhouse gases will remain in the Earth s atmosphere for thousands of years. The
mitigation of global environmental emergencies requires uniform international
standards and established rules. Therefore, international policy coordination by
multilateral agreement is indispensable. This policy paper aims to discuss
participation in the Kyoto Protocol Extension is worthwhile and what benefits and
burdens await the nation taking part in the efforts towards emissions reduction.
Analysis
To begin with, several facts must be considered: (1) policy and economic
implications, (2) cost benefit analysis, and (3) global ethics.
Policy and Economic Implications. The environment is a type of public good, and
the market usually does not adequately protect the common resources which forces
global community to bear the cost of environmental degradation and other negative
consequences thus causing dead weight loss and market failure. This is known as
the classic free rider problem and the paradox known as the tragedy of the commons
(Mankiw, 2012, p. 224). Negative externalities associated with the global climate
change are examples of a type of market failure (Gruber, 2013, p.123). It stresses the
need for international intervention and regulation such as environmental policies,
environmental taxes,

Paideia as Bildung in Germany in the Age of Enlightenment
ABSTRACT: There have been many interpretations of Bildung in the history of
German philosophy, from the Medieval mystics to the secularization of the
Enlightenment. Wilhelm von Humboldt s work at the end of the 18th century is a
good example. He placed the idea of Bildung at the center of his work because it
was rooted in a dynamic, transforming idea of the natural and human worlds while
also being oriented toward a model of balance and perfection. Von Humboldt s
interpretation of modernity is characterized by a strong emphasis on change as well
as the need to find criteria for guiding such a transformation that has no intrinsic or
predetermined end. Love of classical antiquity ... Show more content on

In this way, to render the semantic extent of the term, the meanings of forma and
formatio and imago and imitatio are involved as well; and the following two
concepts are implied: firstly the concept of production according to an order that
gives rise to a form (to something subsident on the basis of mutually congruent rules)
and secondly the conformation of the said act to an image given as assumption, as a
model endowed with an absolute value which this image must resemble or aim for.
The original meaning of bilden, as the Deutsches Wörterbuch by Jacob and Wilhelm
Grimm states, is that of a plastic activity on the sensory level and means giving
shape, producing a certain object abiding to the rules which preside over the Art. In
this case bilden is a synonym for gestalten and formieren. But the relationship of
reproduction, and therefore of resemblance with respect to an image must be added
to this , and this addition to an Urbild pushes bilden well beyond the pure and simple
formation of an object and gives rise to the complex relationship between model and
copy, original and reproduction which implies a very different approach to the
question.
Such a double meaning

In the novel, A Man Called Ove written by Fredrik Backman, Ove, an old man, is
living in Sweden. He lives on a private road in old town homes. His neighbors were
old friends, but now they are moving to retirement homes and new more modern
people are moving in. Patrick and Parvaneh are one of the new couples that moved
in. They have little children and Ove will become very close to them because of
traumatic events. White Men are the authority in the book. They try and come into

in a neighborhood with very strict rules that he likes to keep to. For example, motor
vehicles are prohibited, so when the new neighbors bring their car in Ove isn t to

To start off, a part I did not like about the book was the part about Ove s dad. I felt
as though this complicated the plot a lot and was not necessary to the base of the
book. It did not need to be added into the book because it had no effect to my
understanding of what was happening in the book. If anything it made me more
confused because it went back in time, then it came back to the present and it was
confusing what time period we were in at the moment. A good part of the book
was when Parvaneh was becoming friends with Ove because he needed to get out
of his daily routine. Ove needed someone to shake up the life he had been living
for many years. I would not recommend this book to adolescents because the book
was confusing at some points and the humor was guided towards the adults.
Personally, I would read another book by Fredrik Backman because the book was
still very well written. I also could understand the book, for the most part. To
continue, this book would be better read by adults because the humor was more
guided to that age group. Also, this book is still relevant today because people do not
live forever. We have to learn to move on from the bad times just like Ove did. When
a loved one dies we feel grief, but like Ove we use the people around us to begin to
feel better about what happened to us. In conclusion, this was a good book and I
would rate it three out of five
15. Graycloud By John Nola Analysis
Like Nola, Ruth Graycloud, was exploited and subjugated by her white husband,
John Tate. Ruth was Moses Graycloud s twin sister. Like Nola, Ruth was an Osage
woman who became a victim of one of the white men who married Native American
women to get access to Osage oil wealth. Despite marrying a Native American woman
, Tate had no respect to Native Americans. As Yanka Kroumova Krasteva contends,
Tate constantly takes pictures of the Indians, as if they were archaeological finds.
And this is the way he treats his Indian wife (55). Tate was a photographer; he used
to appear at all significant events in the Indian territory standing behind the three
legged stand that held his camera, his head covered with black cloth, his own good
eye seeing everything through glass lenses (Hogan, Mean Spirit 58). He used to
photograph Native Americans and send their pictures to magazines. Tate first used
Ruth as a model then as source of income . (Hogan, Mean Spirit 179). He
humiliated and abused her; he did not love her, disliked to be seen with her. They
seldom went anywhere together, but when they did, he never walked at her side
(Hogan, Mean Spirit 134). At the end of Mean Spirit Tate killed Ruth. As a result,
Moses shot him dead.
In fact, Hogan highlights the oppression inflicted upon women. Meanwhile, she
pinpoints the previously discussed ecofeminist principle that women s liberation is
inseparable from the struggle against the oppression and abuse of

In the book the setting is in a small town in Colombia where men like Santiago are
expected to be machismo. As a woman, Angela Vicario is the epitome of a
traditional Colombian woman. A traditional Colombian woman is expected to be
virgins when they get married; but Vicario defys this social custom causing
Vicario to get softly pushed his wife into [her house] without speaking, (46). These
details emphasize the idea that women are given different standards than men. The
details help highlight Marquez s criticism of how the traditional Colombian
woman is treated as and thought of as. From a very young age Vicario and her
sisters were taught how to do screen embroidery, sew by machine, weave bone lace,
wash and iron, make artificial flowers and fancy candy, and write engagement
announcements, (31). These skills were taught to better prepare the girls for
marriage; displaying the difference in gender roles. Marquez uses parallel structure
to emphasize the amount of skills one has to learn before they can be considered as
good and pure. Many years after Bayardo San RomГЎn returns Vicario she still does
machine embroidery with her friends just as before she had made cloth tulips and
paper birds, but when her mother went to bed she would stay in her room until dawn
writing letters with no future, (93). The diction of the words no future and still

FROM OUTSIDE THE CAMP TO WITHIN THE KINGDOM:
NARRATIVE CHRISTOLOGY IN LUKE 17:11 19
In Luke 17, Jesus is somewhere along his journey to Jerusalem when he encounters
ten lepers in need of healing. As is expected, he heals them and sends them away.
However, the story takes a sudden shift toward the unexpected. One man returns. The
man s identity is even more unexpected. Luke halts the story to inform readers that he
is a Samaritan, a foreign breed. The Samaritan falls at the feet of Jesus, worshiping
God, and his faith saves him.
On the way to Jerusalem he was passing along between Samaria and Galilee. And
as he entered a village, he was met by ten lepers, who stood at a distance and lifted
up their voices, saying, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. When he saw them he
said to them, Go and show yourselves to the priests. And as they went they were
cleansed. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising
God with a loud voice; and he fell on his face at Jesus feet, giving him thanks. Now
he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus answered, Were not ten cleansed? Where are the
nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?
And he said to him, Rise and go your way; your faith has made you well (Luke
17:11 19 ESV). It is clear that this pericope contains much more than a simple
miracle story or lesson in gratitude. It gives rise to questions about Jesus s location,
salvation, and identity. This narrative proves to be the

Young nonconformists reveal how one particular mode of idealizing youth is an
American convention that hinders the progress of past and present generations. The
speaker proposes an alternative way to idealize youth because young Americans can
disrupt expectations and enforce change. Celebrating young Americans who do not

people. Realizing the harmful effects that stem from idealizing youthforces the

Lee notices that Ginsberg s use of anaphora questions the historical origins of both
social afflictions and collective resistance in Howl. The origins of both social
afflictions and collective resistance stems from America s need to impose unrealistic
expectations on young people. Ginsberg idealizes America s youth by celebrating
their imperfection. Ginsberg blurs his central objects of identification by finding a
connection between the insanity that Carl Solomon and Naomi Ginsberg share. The
blighted hopes and wasted intellects of America s past and present generation are

20. The Ripple Effect of Smoking
The Ripple Effect of Smoking It has become common knowledge that smoking is
bad for people s health, nonetheless people continue to smoke. To be honest, that is
fine. If people want to endanger themselves by smoking then I wish them a swift and
peaceful end (though most smokers die a slow and agonizing death). What is not
acceptable is the effect that smoke has on non smokers who have almost no way of
getting away from smoke unless they want to stay in their house. Smokers affect
everyone around them for the worse. Smokingshould be restricted or banned from all
public places because the health of non smokers should not be jeopardized by
secondhand smoke. As stated before, almost everyone knows and accepts the fact that

An additional 35,000 die of heart disease also from secondhand smoke... It is
unfair to make those who choose not to smoke be damaged by the secondhand
smoke of a smoker. What is the solution to this problem? The most effective
solution is to ban smoking in all public places. If people who want to smoke then
they can do so in the privacy of their own homes, where they can only hurt
themselves and their loved ones. California has taken the first step by banning
smoking in most indoor establishments. Yet more has to be done. It needs to be
banned outdoors in public as well. Though the theory that outdoors smoke
dissipates has some validity, if you are within 20 feet of a smoker, you are still
affected. Other atmospheric conditions can cause you to be affected from farther
away. There will be arguments against this solution, the main one being personal
freedom. Opponents will say that their personal freedom to smoke is being violated.
Though right now, smokers are violating millions of people s rights. A non smoker s
right to live in an uncontaminated and healthy environment is being violated by the
smoker who chooses to engage in this repulsive habit. A non smoker s right to a
longer, pain free life is being taken away by the diseases they get from inhaling
secondhand smoke.
21. Brutus Vs Antony
After listening to both Antony and Brutus speeches at Caesar s funeral, I have come
to the conclusion that Antony s speech was more persuasive than his opponent
Brutus. There were many things that stood out from his speech that made him better
than Brutus , causing the crowd to agree with him rather than with his adversary.
Overall Antony s use of pathos was the thing that made his speech much more
persuasive than his rivals speech.
Mark Antony shows the he is vulnerable and gets the citizens attention by showing his
emotions and crying. Antony says And men have lost their reason, Bear with me...
And I must pause till it come back to me. (weeps) (3.2.104,106), when Antony pauses
and weeps, it shows his sadness, which causes the citizens ... Show more content on

He pulled it out of his pocket and used it as bait to catch the crowd s attention. This
is a logical thing to do because it pulls people into the speech more than they were
since they wanted to see what they as Roman citizens would receive. Antony states
Which, pardon me, I do not mean to read And they would go and kiss dead Caesar
s wounds And dip their napkins in his sacred blood, Yea, beg a hair of him for
memory, And, dying, mention it within their wills. (3.2.130 134) throwing out the
bait for the people to take. Once he announces that he has the will, the people
practically beg him to read it. Eventually he reads the will and the people become
overjoyed with what they had received. He held this interest of the people that Brutus
did not allowing himself to persuade that people to pity Caesar and concur with
Antony.
In conclusion, between Antony and Brutus funeral speeches Brutus gave a less
persuasive speech than his competitor Antony. In the end everyone made a circle
around Caesar s body and cried for they saw the brutality that was inflicted onto his
body. This shows that Antony was more persuasive in convincing the Romans that
Caesar was not ambitious and was a good leader. Overall Antony used all the three
types of persuasion, pathos, ethos, and logos, resulting in him winning the battle
between the two

THE INFLUENCE AFRICAN ART HAD ON EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN
ARTISTS
This paper deliberates the strong influences African art had on famous artists and how
African art got the opportunity to be distinguished. African art is the manifestation of
human artistic imagination, as visual as a sculpture. I will be talking about the
impacts that African craftsmanship had on the European craftsman Pablo Picasso
and the American specialist Max Weber and a few others named in this paper.
Picasso denied that he was ever affected by the African workmanships and how he

piece alone drove the Cubism s movement headway, which was depicted by

Doctor assisted suicide, otherwise known as physician assisted suicide (PAS), is
when a patient voluntarily takes his or her own life by means of a lethal substance
provided by their physician. The right to die, where legal, can be provided to the
terminally ill and hopelessly sick. Some refer to PAS as euthanasiaand murder. This
is not what PAS is. Doctor assisted suicideis a compassionate and painless escape for
patients who no longer have the desire to live a low quality life. People are afraid to
accept PAS as a compassionate thing because they fear death, and they want to
believe that every life is worth living. Terminally ill patients who have no cure would
disagree. The majority of Americans would argue that PAS is ethically and morally
24. The Pros And Cons Of Colonizing The Moon
The idea of colonizing the Moon sparks controversy and while there are plenty of
downsides, the benefit will be far superior and eliminate any degrading it may
cause. Of course, the Moon is a dead, inactive planet as of now, but we can spark
light on the satellite. After getting past the debt of colonizing the moon, we will have
the potential for building a fueling station and we should have a backup plan for
when nuclear war does inevitably happen. While colonizing the moon will
undoubtedly cost a fortune, contrary to popular belief, we can afford the journey.
NASA s annual funding is around $19 billion USD which is more than enough to
kick off a manned mission to the current wasteland. According to MarketWatch s
Jurica Dujmovic: Reaching the moon would cost about $10 billion Also mentioning,
with an additional $28 billion to $52 billion being spent on construction and other
mandatory actions in colonizing the Moon. The Moon has resources that can be
mined out and help reestablish the economic situation. As stated by cnbc s Lori

the environment . Helium 3 is an environment friendly clean, fuel that could be used
to power nuclear fusionreactors. Although we would have to use the majority of our
funding, we will likely gain valuable knowledge, and possibly even go on mining
expeditions to regain some money.
After getting past the debt of colonizing the moon and all of that passes, our
25. The Dark Knight Analysis
Gotham City is running rampant with organized crime and a hero must rise.
However, it s not the hero that we think. Bruce Wayne, A.K.A. Batman (Christian
Bale) is viewed as a source of vigilante justice by a majority of the city, more or less
a scapegoat for the city s misfortunes. The situation in Gotham takes a turn for the
worse once a sadistic psychopath named Joker (Heath Ledger) appears for the first
time. The Joker s crime wave begins small, but through his ability to manipulate and
deceive, he begins to change the culture in Gotham. Writer/Director Christopher
Nolans second installment to BatmanBegins successfully progresses past the story s
origins in the last film, creating characters that undergo noticeable development.
Nolan throws us into a post 9/11 world, with obvious themes of domestic terrorism
embedded throughout an urban setting. Although the film may be labeled as dark by
many, The Dark Knight, captures its audience from the beginning through Heath
Ledger s performance as the Joker and through its complex themes.
The entirety of The Dark Knight is enshrouded in a cloud of darkness from the
beginning, then taking away its greatest asset towards the end. Any element of humor
used in this film is dark humor to say the very least. For example, the Joker interrupts
a crime ring in the midst of a meeting in order to discuss how the Batman must be
eliminated. Sensing the tension in the room, the Joker places a pencil into the table,
right after asking,

Rhetorical Situation: Memoirs tend to delve into all aspects of the writer s life
surrounding a historic event. Laura Hillman holds this true in her memoir: I Will
Plant You a Lilac Tree. She writes about all aspects of her experience as a survivor
of Schindler s list. As Hillman pours her life onto the pages for the audience, she
conveys herself as an emotional and vivid author as she recounts the tragedies of the
holocaust. Effectively, the context, audience, author, and subject of her memoir stand
out as much as her compassion does throughout her history. As the only book Hillman
wrote, she spent her life compiling her memories and other documents in order to
present her experience in the Holocaust. She published the book when she did... Show

The title of Laura Hillman s memoir, I Will Plant You a Lilac Tree, plays a
significant role in her love life. As the promise the man she met in the
concentration camp, she holds onto that little promise to help her survive the
horrors she endured. From her childhood, Hillam grew up with the lilac tree
blooming around her mother s birthday. After her father s death, her family moves
into their grandmother s house for fear of deportation. She sits with her mother
and brothers And I wanted to see the lilac tree, imagining it full of blossoms. I had
always liked the fragrance of lilacs...There was no lilac tree, and Papa was not here
to sing his songs of love (36). She associates the lilac tree with the happiness of her
old life. She misses her father and wants desperately to get back to the time where
they were all together and life was normal. Over time, she falls deeper into her
depression and longing for a time that no longer exists. Yet, she finds a man who
treats her like gold and brings her all the food and clothes that he can smuggle to
her. When Dick asks her what she misses most about home, she responds with the
lilac tree and all the memories associated with it. In turn, he vows One day, when this
is over, I ll plant you a lilac bush. Perhaps it will grow old and become a tree, like the
one you remember (144 145). This vow gives her the hope that she needs in order to
keep going on her darkest days
27. The History Of Dragons
It s often for one to be confused about the mythical creature that was (and still is)
depicted in art forms. No one is certain of this creature, and it s hard to make
theories on them. The dragon is still a relevant topic to this day and is often said to
be seen. People try to connect the dragon to creatures in our current world. Dragons
were used to depict man s fear in animals, but to understand the relations of dragons to
present day reality a person must know how others interpret them with theories.
In ancient times, dragons were told by man in different ways. This would normally
vary depending on religion. Dragons were shown with physical features of animals
that were feared in the common man. Some were depicted with lion heads, serpent ...

In this case, the dragon is a subject to theories. It wasn t until 1841 that English
scientist Richard Owens suggested that the group of newly discovered animals be
called dinosaurs, which literally means terrible lizards. Throughout the next few
decades, the first artist depictions of dinosaurs were actually comical when
compared to what we can scientifically discern today. How then, do pottery, linens,
cave paintings, and written descriptions of dragons from 2,000 to 4,000 years ago
depict dinosaurs better than what science could muster in the mid 1800 s?
(History of Dragons). Scientist might be able to prove the existence of dragons to
be false, but their reality in our modern day life is real. Lizards such a the komodo
dragon are an example. As said, they grow to be very large. In fact, many people to
this day believe that the dragons still exists. The belief in dragons was based not
just in legend but also in hard evidence or so it seemed. For millennia no one knew
what to make of the giant bones that were occasionally unearthed around the globe,
and dragons seemed a logical choice for people who had no knowledge of dinosaurs.
(Radford 4). However, it will take some looking to find solid proof of dragons, that
doesn t mean they do or do not exist. Many people have their own beliefs on what
they do and don t
28. The Importance Of Flag Burning In The United States
There has been a lot of controversy weather during the American flag is right or not.
In this certain situation, a group of students gathered at a park to protest terrorism.
During this, some students got out of hand a set the American Flag on fire. The
students had a permit to protest however they did not have a permit to burn the
flag. Therefore, all participants got arrested by the police. While some people feel
it s wrong to burn the country s flag, others say it isn t since it is protected by the
first amendment. Burning the American flag is protected under the First
Amendment. In 1969 and 1989 the high court ruled that flag burning was protected
under the constitution and you will not get arrested if you participate in this. This
part of the first amendment has been brought up many times because many people
have different stand points. In both cases Texas v. Johnson in 1989, and US v.
Eichmann in 1990 the Supreme Court ruled that flag burning was a form of
symbolic speech protected by the First Amendment. The ruling came after an appeal
from Gregory Johnson, who had been convicted by a Texas court of violating a state

29. Ethnocentrism Examples
What is ethnocentrism, and in today s world is ethnocentrism still in existence; if
so why. So, what is ethnocentrism, it s simply making judgment as to one s race or
culture as to their beliefs, values, and customs to which they believe in; or what
constitutes their lifestyles. In other words, believing that own race is superior over
their own and thinking their better than anyone else; or above the rest (as to race);
while judging their existence as to how we portray them. However, this belief has
stemmed for centuries, and is nothing we have seen or already been a custom too; for
it hasn t showed much change over the past several decades. Therefore, meaning that

While this has gone on for many years, and continues today no one should every
have to be labeled by another, or judged by any means; this is known as ethnocentric
(a natural response to other culture that aren t alike our own). One example, my
husband is Pacific Islander from Guam; however, when we go place people look at
him and automatically labeling him as Hispanic or Asian because of his skin tone
and his dialogue. Another example of ethnocentrism, if we go to a store and ask
for a green coat and the sales clerk gives us a blue one, we would think the person
was color blind at the best or stupid at the worst (Barger 2016, pg. 1). That maybe
the clerk cannot distinguish the differences as to color; just like race we naturally
label them as to their color by putting them in a group to which best resembles
themselves.
However, ethnocentrism is not among every type of tribe, but it does demonstrate
itself among other social groups; like in our own communities through that of
diversity; damaging one s own practices (known as prejudice). For instance, when
were refer to those individuals of black descent in a reification sense, we put them
into a classification, (or group) based on their creed to which they belong; by
symbolization to which we conduct through the entities of social order and
reformation. Just like with Asian Americans, we assume they are different because
their beliefs aren t a custom to what

In today s world, it has to be admitted that more and more power is being given to the

Today s governments are liberal but modern democratic territories. They preach

32. A Brief Look at Imperial Religion
Cicero expressed that the importance of religion is political; controlling the
population, preventing Chaos, and promote loyalty to Rome (Encyclopedia of
Britannica). The Imperial Cult sanctioned that all Emperors and relatives of the
Emperors are Gods and Goddesses, had temples built to worship them (Rome
ReligionGallery), and held the belief that if someone saves another persons life they
must be treated as a God by the person (Encyclopedia). The honor of being seen as a
God was known to be difficult to achieve if they are of low political and
governmental standing To become a God by the view of the Imperial Cult, the
subject often must give gifts to the empire that were seen to be worthy of Gods
themselves. They must also hold a greater share of a divine element this element
was the world s soul and that they had a larger amount in their own human soul.
Many Emperors though were granted divinity after death causing it to be difficult
to attain while living since the Gods would only transform most after death.(Rome
Religion Gallery) Being recognized as a God by the Imperial Cult would often
mean; they would be worshiped by the mass of people, they could receive offerings,
gain political power from their new political standing, gain support from both the
organization itself and the multitude of followers, meaning that in battle they could
have a larger army more supplies, they would receive certain rites, claim a divine

that contributed to such a high death toll were not just from the natural disaster, but

In 2000, the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, or TVPA, was passed to identify
severe forms of human trafficking, create harsh criminal penalties for offenders
and provide support for victims. The TVPA defines sex trafficking as a situation in
which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the
person induced to perform such act has not attained 18 years of age ( How Porn
Fuels Sex Trafficking ). The inclusion of the word coercion means that a
commercial sex act can be classified as sex trafficking as long as a victim is
coerced or intimidated. The organization Fight the New Drug identifies that there are
often instances in the porn industry where the actor or actress is threatened with
lawsuits or charges ( How Porn Fuels Sex Trafficking ). Human trafficking isn t the
only illegal industry fueled by sexual violence and exploitation. The wide spread
availability of cameras in devices such as portable cameras and cell phones has made
it easier to take secret recordings of another s intimate body parts and other sexually
explicit material without the individuals consent or knowledge. Growing internet
access has facilitated the nonconsensual distribution of those images but the criminal
laws in the United States have not stayed up to date with these developments.
Because of this, victims of revenge porn and nonconsensual pornographydo not have
adequate means to seek justice. In a study conducted by Cynthia Najdowski at the

Herbert Clark Hoover was the 31st president of the United States.
During his first year in office the Wall Street crash of 1929 occurred. He was blamed

truth of crimes committed during the time period, grant amnesty from the
government for individuals who confessed the whole truth, and to allow the country
as a whole to reconcile and forgive all who contributed to apartheid. These TRC
trials were aired nationwide on television. It created a safe ground for citizens to
voice the accounts of violence unleashed on them by the government and an
opportunity for perpetrators to come forward. The reconciliation of South Africawas
achieved by the formalized process of the TRC, with the goal of restoration.
The Gugulethu trial is a prime example of how forgiveness among individuals may
be possible. As seen in the courtroom screening scene of the hysterical mothers of
the victims, these trials could be very emotional for the families of the victims.
Seven young men accused of being hostile terrorists were gunned down by police
officers. The explanation for the orders for shooting the young men were because
they appeared as threats to police as they attempted to arrest the men. When Mbelo
confronts the families, the mother s of the seven men initially reject his apology.
However by the end of the confrontation, one of the victim s son tells Mbelo that he
forgives him. Christopher Mxinwa s
40. Compare And Contrast Locke And Hobbes
The foundational policies and beliefs of the United States of America were not
created by a group of men sitting around a piece of paper in the 1770s. Rather, they
were formed by dozens of men and women over previous centuries. These
courageous men and women dared to imagine a world in which all men were equal,
with the right to freely speak and be heard. Two such men, Thomas Hobbes and John
Locke, were among the most influential social and political thinkers of the 16th, 17th,
and 18thcenturies. Hobbes and Locke [Attempted] to formulate forms of government
that had intellectual integrity and gave legitimacy to the political structure after
revolution and the removal of the old order (LawTeacher). These men began with
different views of the world, which lead them to very different conclusions, and
summarily, very different recommendations for government. Both Locke and Hobbes
were well educated, scientifically grounded citizens of England, shortly after the
collapse of the Divine Right of Kings. Having an interest in philosophical politics,
they ran similar hypothetical situations on man to determine the best... Show more

LawTeacher states that Using scientific method they each argued from their
understanding of the first principals of human interaction and both came to powerful
rational conclusions (LawTeacher). Nevertheless, they came to a mutual belief that
government was a necessary construction, used to protect man from the instability of
nature.Hobbes believed that men were, by nature, anarchical and violent. He took
this beliefto the extreme, stating that life is merely a perpetual and restless desire for
power after power, that ceases only in death (Middleton). From this presupposition,
Hobbes formed his experiment. Hobbes believed that for men to contain their desire
for power, all men must subjugate themselves to a higher power, a
41. Comparative Advantage

Does the idea of comparative advantage provide a good explanation of current
patterns of international trade?
For the last two centuries the international trade evolved a lot and many economists
tried to explain it. One of the first theories that attempted to explain the international
trade pattern was the Absolute advantage theory. A.Smith was a great economist; he
is the one who created this theory. For A. Smith countries should specialize in
products in which they have an absolute advantage. It was a good Theory but it was
excluding countries that did not have any absolute advantage. David Ricardo another
great British economist found this loophole in Smith s theory and ... Show more

That would why Germany and France are both exporting cars to each other s
country. This example shows that two countries may trade the same product (cars in
this example) because customers want more choices, it is an era of marketing, where
companies are studying customers needs, and we just cannot sell any goods without
even knowing if there will be a demand. The customers needs have evolved and so
did the international trade. Nowadays Intra industry trade is a reality and the
comparative advantage theory cannot explain it.
We saw that countries may trade the same kind of products and that it goes against
the comparative advantage theory. Now we will see that some countries may be the
victim of MNC s strategies.
With the Globalization, the Multinational Corporations (MNC) has now the
possibility to use global strategies. Indeed, now the MNCs can go everywhere. It
means that the international trade does not really depend of a country, because
now MNCs can use horizontal strategy , it is when MNCs put a subsidiary
company where they can sell and manufacture their goods , they can also use a
vertical strategy , it s when an MNCs put subsidiary company in place where they
can gather raw materials at low cost and then send them to their factories. We can
take the example of Nike which makes

Motherhood is a choice you make every day, to put someone else s happiness and
benefit ahead of your own, to teach the hard lessons, to do the right thing even
when you re not sure what the right thing is, and to forgive yourself, over and over
again, for doing everything wrong. Being a mother is one of the most blessed and
the most challenging job in the world. Giving birth to a new life and making it

In gestational diabetes, blood sugar usually returns to normal soon after delivery.

Leadership
Leadership Critique
Transactional and Transforamtional Theories:
Introduction
Several theories have been made and discussed and more are being put forward
explaining the effectiveness of leadership. As described by Weihrich et al (2008)
Leadership is perhaps one of the most important aspects of management. The most
noticeable and proposed leadership theories are Transformational and Transactional
Leadership theories, and since it has been formulated by Bass (1985) it attracted
many experts and still has some issues and limitations that have been recognized.
Being interested in those two theories and relating them to my personal experience
and perspective, will go through the major discussions read and critiques made to
compare and contrast the values of both theories.

Burns (1978) defined a transformational leader as one who raises the followers
level of consciousness about the importance and values of desired outcomes and the
methods of reaching those outcomes (p.141). According to Warrillow (2012)
Transformational leadership theory is all about leadership that creates positive
change in the followers whereby they take care of each other s interests and act in
the interests of the group as whole. By providing inspirational motivation to
followers, it develops a less stressful environment and inspires them by taking
individual responsibilities, challenges and positive view for the goals to achieve. It
was described by Bass Riggio (2006) Enthusiasm and optimism are key characteristics
of inspirational motivation. Transformational leadership major focus is to provide
coaching, individual attention and personal assistance to fulfill their needs and

44. Energy Notes On Energy Losses
Energy losses in pipe
Introduction
The fluid flow is subjected to energy losses as it moves through pipes, particularly
via friction. An indication of energy loss is in the form of a head loss or pressure
drop. The task at hand will be to investigate the variation of head loss at different
velocities through a 17.2mm diameter and 4.5mm diameter pipe. The results will
then be used to derive the Reynolds numbers for each velocity and then compared
the variation of friction factor. From the results we will be able to gain an insight
into the different types of flow and observe the region of transition as a fluid changes
flow type from laminar to turbulent flow. The result calculations will consist of both
experimental and theoretical results, this will help us to understand better the impact
of errors. A comparison will then be made of the Friction factor to Reynolds number
ratio for both experimental and theoretical results. Aim and objective
Aim
To gain an insight into the nature of fluid flow in pipes and relationships for
estimating energy losses
To establish the relationship between head loss and flow rate for a straight smooth
cylindrical pipe.
To show how this result can be generalised using dimensionless groups.
To show that there are two distinct types of flow and to determine the Reynolds
number region for transition between them.

A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings
The fictional tale entitled A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings is an intriguing
story which is expressed very well in the title. The story is about just that, an old man
with wings. The only aspect that the title fails to point out is that he is an angel. I
find the story to be somewhat interesting; however, it isn t exactly hard to put down.
The one thing about this story that stands out the most, is the author s use of tone.
This is the main aspect of the story that jumps out at you. The usage of tone and detail
really works to the story s advantage. The first paragraph alone is filled with
descriptions that really set the tone and make you feel like you are there. On the third

By that time the onlookers less frivolous than those at dawn had already arrived and
they were making all kinds of conjectures concerning the captive s future. The
simplest among them thought that he should be named mayor of the world. Others
of sterner mind felt that should be promoted to the rank of five star general in
order to win all the wars. Some visionaries hoped that he could be put to stud in
order to implant on earth a race of winged wise men who could take charge of the
universe. At this point in the story, the characters start to wonder if the angel is
even going to survive. I feel that this sets a very dark and bleak tone. The angel is
lying there, motionless, and all of the people who are around him can only think
about themselves. It shows how selfish humans can be when someone or
something is dying, and the only reason they care if it lives or not is so they can
use it for their own benefit. Meaning, they want to use him for a leader or to bring
in money, as the main characters did. Pelayo and Elisenda (main characters) really
cashed in on the presence of the Angel. The way that the angel is being used and
poorly treated, does a good job of setting the tone in itself. Anyone who imagines this
situation is going to imagine it as somewhat of a grim one. This is actually quite
strange if you think about it. When most people think of angels they think of bright
lights and happiness. The angels are always portrayed as strong,

to watch my favorite tv series, which is Grey s Anatomy. The most heartwarming
character in this series is Izzie Stevens whom is played by Katherine Heigl. The
overall theme given in Grey s Anatomy by her character is anticipation, melancholy,
and hope. The role of Dr. Izzie Stevens is truly unique. Izzie is a very compassionate
character. At times she tends to get too emotionally involved with her patients.

The Winged Victory also strongly possesses these characteristics of the sculptures in
the Hellenistic period. There is an important reason for their changes. Because Athens
was defeated in the Peloponnesian war (404 B.C.), people started to lose confidence
and motivation for activity of public welfare and social community. Nevertheless, the
Greeks were still interested in creating innovative artworks. Instead of their deep and
strong patriotism and devotion in the past, the sculpture s subject became more
personal (Sacks). They realized that they could express and create sculptures of the
human and divine body by both, static image and in motion. Their next step was
creating more realistic portraits which showed the human condition than ideal
circumstances, so the sculptures in this period mainly referred portraitures of living
people to create artworks. In mythological subjects, male figures were more
fascinating and were created in the previous period, but this thought was changed by
an interest in the female figures with the cloth, sometimes nude. Marble carving
became the most important sculpture discipline at that time, before metal casting
(Budin). The movement of the Hellenistic period can be confirmed by the Winged
Victory of Samothrace which is strongly influenced and reflected by the

An advertisement promoting Ore Ida tater tots is one example of a company who
incorporated those various techniques, but in my opinion was not very successful.

you must see the picture of the tater tots in the suspect line up. In Fowles article, he
discusses the effect that images have on viewers of advertisements. He states, Some
few ads have their emotional appeal in the text, but for the greater number by far the
appeal is contained in the artwork. This makes sense, since visual communication
better suits more primal levels of the brain (Fowles 75). Even without reading the
words on the ad, the image was successful in grabbing my attention. It is an amusing
image that is not very often seen so I was curious and wanted to read more about
