2. Okonkwo s Struggles In Things Fall Apart
The Final Straw
It was the turn of the century and the continent of Africa appealed to the
industrialized nations of Europe for the continent s abundant resources. And once the
colonization of Africa began, the cultures of the tribal people and that of the
Europeans collided; instead of mixing, the cultures clashed. This conflict could been
seen through the life of one Ibo man; Okonkwo from Chinua Achebe s novel, Things
Fall Apart. Upon the European arrival, they brought with them new ideas and
concepts they expected to be followed by the natives. However, Okonkwo refused
to have anything to do with them. His refusal to accept the new concepts and ideas
changed his sense of identity, because he feared being seen as weak by subduing to ...

It was there that a District Commissioner could be found judging crimes the native
people committed. Of course justice was not being served fairly upon the people
who were judged. A numerous amount of things the Ibo people found to be a part
of their culture was seen as a crime to the white men. And eventually, Okonkwo
was involved in the court s ruling. After the burning of a church, Okonkwo and
other men of title, were called to the courthouse to meet with the district
commissioner. However, the District Commissioner s intent was not to meet with
the men, but to imprison them. The text describes the incident by saying, It
happened so quickly that the six men did not see it coming. There was only a brief
scuffle, too brief even to allow the drawing of a sheathed machete. The six men
were handcuffed and led into the guardroom. (142) The men were given a fine of
two hundred bags of cowries to pay for their release. Not able to pay the fine
immediately, the men stayed imprisoned for several days in which they went
without food or water. Once the fine had finally been paid the price had went up
by another fifty bags of cowries. And upon Okonkwo;s release, the male had never
been so infuriated before. He was truly ready for war. Only the rest of the village
did not stand with him. Unlike Okonkwo, the rest of the village were on a more
peaceful path for dealing with
3. The Policy Of Containment In The Cold War
The cold war was a war that lasted over 20 years with no actual military combat.
While all Cold War presidents dealt with communism Both Truman and Eisenhower
s speeches encouraged The Policy of Containment while Kennedy s Suggested
flexible response. All these presidents utilized three methods. Military use the use
of military force to fix a problem (Truman 4), Military aid Loaning military to a
place so they can use it (Truman 2) , and Economic aid Loaning money to other
countries (Truman 1). There are also many theories and beliefs that were made
during the cold war. Domino theory is the thought that if one country fell to
communism the est would follow like a line of dominos(Ayers R94). The reason
for the cold war was communism, which is a political system where the govt.
Controls all money, business, and people(Ayers R94). Every president had their
own Foreign Policy, which is how we deal with other countries (Ayers R125).
Truman and eisenhower both believed that communism can stay where it is but it
could stay where it was(Ayers R94). This was known as The Policy of Containment.

would provide Economic Aid to countries so they could get back on their

4. Anatomy of the Female Reproductive System
Anatomy of the Female Reproductive System
The reproductive role of the female is far more complex than that of a male. Not
only must she produce gametes, but her body must prepare to nurture a developing
embryo for a period of approximately nine months. Ovaries, the female gonads, are
the primary reproductive organs of a female, and like the male testes, ovaries serve a
dual purpose: They produce the female gametes (ova) and sex hormones, the
estrogens * and progesterone (pro ges′tĕ rōn). The accessory ducts (uterine
tubes, uterus, and vagina) transport or otherwise serve the needs of the reproductive
cells and a developing fetus. As illustrated in Figure 27.11, the ovaries and duct
system, collectively known as the internal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each uterine tube is about 10 cm (4 inches) long and extends medially from the
region of an ovary to empty into the superolateral region of the uterus via a
constricted region called the isthmus (is′mus). The distal end of each uterine tube
expands as it curves around the ovary, forming the ampulla; fertilization usually
occurs in this region. The ampulla ends in the infundibulum (in″fun dib′u lum),
an open, funnel shaped structure bearing ciliated, fingerlike projections called
fimbriae (fim′bre e; fringe ) that drape over the ovary. Unlike the male duct
system, which is continuous with the tubules of the testes, the uterine tubes have
little or no actual contact with the ovaries. An ovulated oocyte is cast into the
peritoneal cavity, and many oocytes are lost there. However, the uterine tube
performs complex movements to capture oocytes it bends to drape over the ovary
while the fimbriae stiffen and sweep the ovarian surface. The beating cilia on the
fimbriae then create currents in the peritoneal fluid that tend to carry an oocyte into
the uterine tube, where it begins its journey toward the uterus.
The uterine tube contains sheets of smooth muscle, and its thick, highly folded
mucosa contains both ciliated and nonciliated cells. The oocyte is carried toward the
uterus by a combination of muscular peristalsis and the beating of the cilia.
Nonciliated cells of the mucosa have dense
5. Literary Techniques Used in The Storm by Kate Chopin
This short story was really straight forward until it got to the end, where it had a
twist, which made me pick the story to write on. Kate Chopin did an outstanding job
using symbolism, but this novel is not for all ages, if you know what I mean. How
the setting, tone and theme all tie all together is what makes the story different from
the others.
Is the storm literal or symbolic? This particular question really stood out and really
made me think and analysis the story. For example, the question asks about the storm
if it is literal or symbolic. The storm is a super obvious symbol. It s involved in
practically every element of the story. First off, it s the title. Second, it plays a huge
role in the plot, forming the beginning and the end of the story. It also plays a really
important part in the middle by bringing Calixta and Alcee together, pushing them
into each other s arms and giving them the time and space to get physical before the
world outside returns to normal. Also, the storm is a frightening occurrence in the
natural world. Alcee describes it as a cyclone (Chopin 2.13), while Bobinot can tell
right away that its sombre, sinister, and threatening (Chopin 1.1). Chopin describes
the rain pouring down with a repetition and regularity that suggests rain itself. Of
course, it s when all that rain is coming down most passionately and brutally that
Calixta and Alcee are also getting more and more passionate; exploring their feelings
for one another to the
6. Summary Of Where Are The Children By Mary Higgins
Clark
The book Where are the Children? by Mary Higgins Clark starts out on a late
October day. The main character Nancy is a young mother of two young children
named Michael and Missy, her husband is Ray Eldridge. Because it is one of the
last good days of Fall Nancy lets her children play outside while she changes
laundry and does other household chores. That is when her children are taken
without a trace of anything left behind except a red mitten. Immediately the police
start searching for the children with Nancy as their number one suspect, there is
also a lot of media coverage at Nancy s house because of Nancy s past tragedies that
have made everything seem like she did in fact take the children. Because of all this
stress Nancy becomes delirious and is unable to help the police, but she eventually
works through it and gives... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That is because the storyline of the book is easy to follow and keeps you on the
edge of your seat while you read, especially when the children are involved in the
storyline. Page 37 is a good example of this because that is when the children are
kidnaped you don t know what will happen next. Also because you can form a
connection with the characters of the story very easily. Such as with the main
character Nancy because everyone at one point in their life has been wrongly
accused of something they didn t do just like Nancy was on page 66 of taking her
children. Throughout the story one of the recurring aspects of the story that was
very intriguing were the clues the author left in the book for the reader to solve
who the kidnaper was. An example of these clues can be found on various pages
but one of the best clues can be found on Because this book is not the usual genre I
read, it took me awhile to get with the direction the book was heading to but once I
did I enjoyed the book very much and I would definitely put it up in my list of top 10

7. Civic Consulting Project Observation Report
As a political Science major I generally have a strong interest in government. As a
lifelong resident of public housing, I have a specific interest in the New York City
Housing Authority. So, when Civic Consulting USA, an organization dedicated to
helping government leaders tackle some of the toughest issues cities face , offered
me a fellowship in a project intended to improve NYCHA; it was quite easy to
accept the opportunity. This essay is will discuss some of my thoughts I must admit
that going into this project, I was initially quite dubious of NYCHA s ability or even
desire to improveliving conditions. My skepticism stems from being a lifelong
resident of Throggs Neck Housing, a development were problems are met with a
plethora of excuses rather than any type of remedy. However, I was pleasantly
surprised when I met members of the executive staff. Everyone was incredibly adept
and committed to their jobs they fully understood the gravity of their responsibilities.
Most importantly of all, I sensed a true compassion and earnest desire to improve the

I saw this most prominently during the board meetings held by Civic Consulting. It
was interesting to watch a number of highly accomplished experts from diverse
professional backgrounds pondered the issues facing NYCHA and offerer advice and
potential solutions that may be outside of the conventional wisdom of a government
agency. I enjoyed learning about the ways in which government can incorporate tools
developed by private forces to trigger organizational changes which ultimately help
the government agency and its beneficiaries. What I appreciate most about this type
of public private relationship, particularly fostered by Civic Consulting is that it is
more concerned with genuine government improvement, rather than the profit

October 13, 2015 Focus on California and Drought There are many problems with
world, but one of the most difficult problems are global warming and droughts.
Global warming leads to droughts, among other things, and droughts lead to trouble.
Droughts are very problematic, because they can lead to fire hazards, low food
cropping, and many other things. Drought is the absents or shortage of water and
water is an absolute must have in the world. There are so many problems because
of drought and people need to find solutions the problems. Climate change affects
many factors associated with drought. Beyond direct economic impacts, a drought
can threaten drinkable water supplies and entire ecosystems, and can even add to
increased food prices. California has had the driest year on record recently. There
are different types of drought. Drought can thought as dry, cracked earth; low
water levels, such as lakes and stuff; and barren fields, but these are examples of
different types of drought, each of which is measured differently. Meteorological
drought, which is very specific to the area as average precipitation, may vary
considerably spatially. This is a most often thought of as drought in comparison to
precipitation, assessing the degree of dryness (in relation to a local or area average)
and the duration of the dry period. A concern of farmers is agricultural drought when

9. Media Effects On Police
Surette (2015) stated After criminality, media pays the most attention to fighting
crimes. The public is exposed to large amounts of crime fighting content in news,
entertainment, and infotainment, most of it terribly distorted (p. 100). The
entertainment media plays an important role in framing what citizens think about
police. For most of the public tv shows and movies plays a part of their image of the
police. The Administration of Justice program of George Mason University gave an
article about the public image of the police. They mention that tv shows usually show
police solving crimes, instead of preventing. They also stated Effective law
enforcement officers in the entertainment media are those who eschew routine
methods, often violating rules and laws, and take exceptional measures to solve cases

11. Analysis Of George Romero s Night Of The Living Dead
In 1968, George Romero released Night of the Living Dead, a film that defined a
whole new type of monster and certainly transformed the way in which people
were scared of movies. Zombies were not only reinvented, but the entire horror
genre was as well. The movie itself is historic in the way it defined a new type of
zombiefor Hollywood, but more so how history from the 60 s drew the zombie
threat. The movie does suggest that this horrific event was the result of radiation
from the outer space, but I believe there is much more to be interpreted. Romero is
not interested in giving the audience a thorough description of this upheaval, he
would rather consider the peoples response to it. He chose his viewers to define his
allegories. The viciousness and extreme images were unexpected during this time,
helping this movie get on the map and express its purpose as a symbolic disapproval
of the atrocities of Vietnam, Violent racism, and the hostility towards the civil rights
movement.
By the late 1960 s Americans were constantly made vulnerable to the fear of the
Vietnam War. The nation did not need monsters to terrify them; the unhuman horrid
images in the media were already doing that. This horror was created by mankind
itself. The war created negative attitudes toward death and destruction, motivating
Night of the Living dead to utilize these current points of view. Indeed these zombies
were no longer entranced servants, but something new in general. Bishop says, it us
12. Ode To A Nightingale Critical Analysis
Fade far away, dissolve, and quite forget What thou among the leaves hast never
known, The weariness, the fever, and the fret. (Keats) In Ode to A Nightingale, John
Keats is the narrator who is in a state of drowsiness and numbness when he sees a
nightingale and then goes on to explain his encounter with the bird. Although the
surface level meaning of the poem is a man expressing his thought to and about a
bird, there is a deeper meaning that can be seen when you investigate the literary
devices used. Keats uses imagery, tone, and symbolism to display the theme of pain
and inner conflict between life and death. Imagery is seen all throughout the poem,
but can be seen specifically when Keats is referencing death. Through the uses of the
word hemlock which is a poison made of herbs, and Lethe which is, in Greek
mythology, a river in Hades (the underworld). Souls about to be reincarnated drank
from it to forget their past lives. (Melani) These words, along with others, paint a
distinct picture of death and forms a very dark image of Keats inner thoughts. In
the 2nd Stanza, Keats describes the real world with words such as Flora which is
the goddess of flowers and fertility. (Melani) and Hippocrene which is, in Greek
mythology, a spring sacred to the Muses, located on Mt.Helicon. Drinking its waters
inspired poets. (Melani) Through the uses of these words, readers can infer that
Keats seems to think that life, when enjoyed, is blissful and pure. Imagery is used

Black Economic Impotence: Living Under the Rules of Another He who has the
gold makes the rules! The above quote has been attributed to everyone from Jesus
of Nazareth to Tyler Perry; however, the first time I heard it was from a Jewish
business man named David, who was teaching me the principles of business and
life. What he was explaining to me was the simple truth that those who don t
acquire wealth will always be at the mercy of those who do. He was addressing my
proclivity to take on the position of a renegade in dealing with many of the status
quos of business. He told me that my rebel spirit would serve me well, but only if I
was able to obtain the gold. As I digress slightly, it is important to take note that this
white man took on the role of mentoring me after numerous blacks had avoided and
ignored my requests to teach me the game of business. Another role that this person

Empowerment is a process that is ignited internally and sustained autonomously. It
is imperative that blacks get the gold, if we ever expect to impact the rules of the

They control the rules of engagement, and that leaves us as pawns in a game of
chess that is being played for all that is at stake. I have often said that those in
power have been playing chess while blacks having being checkers. The first time I

the London Underground invites public transit users to partake in the daily lifestyle

Victorian Eraby delving into the notions of race and social class. Specifically, by
emphasizing the black dandy s superiority over his white counterparts and

Contrarily, Shonibare communicates to the viewers that the stereotyped inferiority of
the black race during the Victorian Era was not absolute. Though rare, black people
could have transcended this racial norm because 11:00 hours proposes that there
is no evidence suggesting that they were less capable than white folks. In another
case, Shonibare addresses the norm that the black race was more primitive than its
white counterpart. Victorian Britain became more racist when Darwin s theory on
evolution gave all races a shared primitive ancestry (race and racism). As an add
on, scientific and technological superiority became the prime indicator of racial
superiority, and Britain fit this category due to its massive colonial expansions and
development in weaponry (race and racism). These advancements led to the belief
that the British race was evolving from the primitive lifestyle faster than the black
race, which ultimately tagged all black people as primal. Shonibare challenges this
idea in 3:00 hours where the black dandy engages in an orgy with his lackeys at
three in the morning. In Captain Jesse s The Life of George Brummell, esq.,
Commonly Called Beau Brummell, Brummell had too much self love ever to be

Levitating is not only for magicians, but for magnets too. Scientist have been using
magnetism to create levitation for years. Recently, they have advanced their
technology and expanded their knowledge about magnetism and levitation and
conformed them to be used in everyday life. Magnetic levitation can be broken down
into so many different topics such as magnetism and levitation, but there is a much
deeper meaning to magnetic levitation. A magnetis an object that has a magnetic field.
It can attract heavy objects such as iron and steel. A magnet can be in many shapes
and sizes. The word magnet came from the elderly Cretan shepherd, Magnes. He
supposedly found a rock that had a strong magnetic force. In the rock was large

Magnetic levitation uses the natural repelling nature of the poles that are of the same
kind to control levitation. This can come in many different forms and all made
differently. One way is permanent magnets, which is the easiest of all the forms
because it does not require any outside material to make the levitation, but it is not
very controllable. Magnetism is the main component in the levitation act. Magnetism
has been around ever since Earth was created. It is the force that is generated by the
motion of electrons within its atoms. Earth spins and has gravity because of
magnetism. It is created within the processes inside of earth, the core. Earths core is
made of iron and ore that is constantly in a spinning motion which forms a pure
magnetic force. Magnetism also creates north and south poles that the earth spins.
The magnetism that earth gives off is called earths magnetic

For centuries the criminal justice system has allowed lay people; people who are not
legally qualified to administer justice to the civilian population. Lay magistrates are
otherwise known as Justices of the Peace. Lay magistrates work is mainly connected
to criminal cases although they also deal with some civil matters, especially family

Unlike other members of the judiciary, their role and functions have limitations. As
individuals, lay magistrates may authorise search and arrest warrants, but mainly their
functions are performed as a bench of three. This may include hearing applications
for bail or be in charge of committal proceedings. In trial, they decide the facts, the
sentence and the law, though the concluding is under the advice of the justice s clerk.
The clerk otherwise known as the legal adivisor has to be qualified as a barrister or
solicitor for at least five years. The clerk s duty is to guide the magistrates on the
question of law, practice and procedure. The clerk can not assist in the decision
making and should not normally retire with the magistrates when they make their
discisions. Clerks deal with ruotine admistrative matters such as issuing warrents for
arrest, extend poilce bail, adhourn criminal procedings and deal with Early

As lay magistrates perform an important role by being in charge over the vast
majority of criminal cases, they enjoy the same advantage of immunity from suit as

19. Frankenstein by Mary Shelly and the Island of Dr. Moreau...
Two Mad Scientists Trying to Play God
By Bonique Obermuller
ENG 4UO
Terry Pratchett once said, God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an
ineffable game of His own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective
of any of the other players. In the novels Frankenstein by Mary Shelly and The Island
of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells the characters Victor Frankenstein and Dr. Moreau are
scientists who take their experiments too far. Both Victor and Moreau are very smart
men who want to experiment with nature. Victor is smart and curious. Victor wants
to fight disease and discover the mysteries of nature. Moreau is a very ruthless
barbaric man who does not take the feelings of others into consideration. ... Show

And it is here, on this very island, that I sir, have found the very essence of the
Devil. (The Island of Doctor Moreau) His work is different to Victors because it
surrounds the concept of fabricating these grotesque part human part animal hybrid
creatures. It seems that Moreau wants to become a kind of God like figure, and to
rule over his new race of people . One can say that Moreau is an impatient man. It
is understood that he wants to create life but the speed with which he wants to do
is like that of God in the book of Genesis. He said, Each time I dip a living creature
into the bath of burning pain, I say, This time I will burn out the entire animal, this
time I will make a rational creature of my own. After all, what is ten years? Man has
been a hundred thousand in the making (The Island of Doctor Moreau 146 147). In
his opinion one one hundred thousand years was much too long for him; like the God
in the Christian Religion, create a problem solving thinking creature with a
conscience after the image of himself and other humans. Hence, both men in their
own way demonstrate a scientist perusing their experimentations and trying to play
an all powerful God; and attempt to bend the laws of nature to fit their sinister
agendas.
Although there are similarities between Victor and Moreau that cannot be ignored,
the differences are also pronounced. Especially differences in character more so the
difference in the way they perceive

Trauma C Spine
This essay is not intended to criticize any emergency medical or hospital staff. I am
writing this essay out of concern for patients who come into the emergency room that
may have a jeopardized spinal cord resulting from an injury or suspected injury to
their cervical spine. I am a certified emergency medical technician, farm medic
instructor and currently a medical diagnostic student doing clinicial s. In the United
States each year there are approximately 10,000 reported cervical spine injuries that
come into emergency rooms. Motor vehicle accidents account for approximately
45%, falls approximately 30%, the remaining 25% from sports and miscellaneous.

The radiographer s job is to deliverer quality X rays that have been ordered by the
medical staff. Basic radiographs required to exclude a cervical spine fracture include
lateral view, anterioposterior view, and an open mouth odontoid view. The lateral
view must include all seven cervical vertebrae as well as the joint space between C7
T1. If this is not possible because of patient size or condition then a swimmers view
will be needed. The anterioposterior view should show all cervical vertebrae, while
the dens and joint space should be visible on the odontoid view. These exams need to
be completed in a timely matter while continuing to maintain cervical immobilization.
The importance of obtaining quality X rays cannot be overemphasized as the most
frequent cause of missed cervical fractures is the result of inadequate films.
The medical staff role in the care of trauma c spine injuries is to make sure that
proper exams are done so that a proper diagnosis can be made. This is achieved by
a good physical assessment as well as proper communication with the EMT s about
mode of injury, and evaluation of radiographs that have been ordered. If the
radiographs are inadequate to rule out a fracture, then the need for repeated or
additional X rays or a CT scan should be obtained, until all vertebrae are visible and
the possibility of fracture can be ruled out. This is how it is supposed to work.
21. Federal Budgetary Function, And The Oversight Function
Essay
The 3 most significant powers of Congress are The Budgetary Function, The Law
Making Function, and The Oversight Function. 1. The Budgetary Function
Congress solidified their role in the budgetary process by passing the
Congressional Budget Act of 1974. The Act modified the role of Congress in the
federal budgetary process. It created standing budget committees in both the House
and the Senate, established the Congressional Budget Office, and moved the
beginning of the fiscal year from July 1 to October 1. The Act had two main goals:
(1) strengthen and centralize Congress budget authority; (2) reduce the President s
impoundment authority. The latter was done by drafting detailed guidelines
restricting how the President can impound funds already appropriated by
Congress. 2. The Law Making Function is a form of the state activity intended on
the creation (or revision) of the legal norms. Bills are introduced by a variety of
methods. After introduction, bills are sent to designated committees which, in most
cases, schedule a series of public hearings to permit presentation of views by
persons who support or oppose the legislation. The hearing process, which can last
several weeks or months, opens the legislative process to public participation. When
a committee has acted favorably on a bill, the proposed legislation is then sent to the
floor for open debate. In the Senate, the rules permit virtually unlimited debate. A bill
passed by one house is sent to the other for

Although a majority of public figures do not identify themselves as Franciscan or
consciously follow Franciscan values, plenty of them unconsciously use social
media to fulfill Franciscan values such as creating a caring community, showing
compassion, and making peace. Ellen Degeneres, ranked number four on Forbes
Most Influential Women in Media, out ranked public figures such as Oprah
Winfrey, Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters, and Tyra Banks due to her enormous
social media following (Blakeley, 2012). Degeneres uses social medium platforms
such as Twitter and Facebook to foster friendship, spread kindness, care for the
poor and oppressed, and promote non violence. There are many examples of
Degeneres use of Facebook to foster friendship on a global level. A recent example,
just a few weeks ago, the Ellen DegeneresShow Facebook page posted a YouTube

shared the video with words of encouragement and motivation for the boy who
thought he was alone. The posting of this video assures all of the kids and teenagers
that are struggling with depression and lonesomeness that they are not alone, that not
only Ellen supports them, but that thousands of others are with them as well. Many

T.J.X. was the leading fashionable brand name, off price product retailer in the
U.S. In 2013 the company s net sales reached $27 billion, increased by 6%
compared to the same period in 2012. In 2007, the company was revealed by the
investigating authorities that their database had been penetrated by hackers for 1.5
years, and been causing 94 million debit/credit card and customers personal
information stolen around the world of its 2,500 branch stores.
In 2005, the discussion of upgrading the wireless system to the standard WAP was
raised in the information department. However, they choose to focus more on
constraining the budget rather than to invest on wireless security system. According to
the corresponding email between the CIO and the employee, they were aware the
necessity of upgrading the system, but decided to overlook on the potential risk and
the contingency plan they relied on was hope, hoping that they will not get
compromised. And it was the same year when the first major intrusion into the
company s system had occurred at Marshalls. The criminal hacked into the network
and established connection with the main TJX server, then downloaded card
information with their program installed onto the server.
Since the hackers had access to the main database, they were able to modify and
delete log files and to move data to hide their movements. This could be one of the
reasons why it took the company almost two years to detect that there was some
suspicious software

Salmonella is a prokaryotic, rod shaped, bacterial organism. It is nonsporeforming
and Gram negative.(1) Salmonella is responsible for almost 60 percent of reported
cases of bacterial food borne illness and 40 percent of all food borne illness of any
kind. Salmonella survives digestion and reproduces in the small intestine, making
people sick. Salmonella has hundreds of different types, all of which cause much the
same illness in humans. Eating food containing live salmonella bacteria causes
salmonellosis. (2)

Salmonella can cause enteric fever (typhoid fever). Some children have a salmon
colored rash (rose spots). When Salmonella bacteria get into the bloodstream, they
can travel and cause infection throughout the body. Children with sickle cell
disease, HIV, and certain other causes of anemia are among those at risk for
complications from Salmonella. Salmonella can be spread from person to person
by the fecal oral route. Salmonella symptoms usually begin about 24 hours after
exposure (from 6 to 72 hours). Enteric fever can occur up to 60 days after exposure.
The symptoms usually go away within a week in otherwise healthy children. (2) It is
estimated that from 2 to 4 million cases of salmonellosis occur in the U.S. annually.

Many different kinds of illnesses can cause diarrhea, fever or abdominal cramps.
Determining that Salmonella is the cause of the illness depends on laboratory tests
which identify Salmonella in the stool of an infected person. (1) Other tests, such as
blood tests or spinal fluid tests may be performed if there is reason to suspect that
Salmonella is there. Salmonella may be suspected based on the history and physical
exam. (2) Salmonella bacteria is discovered in stool cultures. Although blood cultures
are rarely positive, bacteremia does occur in 5% of adults with Salmonella
gastroenteritis and can result in hematogenous spread to the heart (endocarditis),
spleen, bone (osteomyelitis), and joints (reactive arthritis). (3) Salmonella
25. Aims And Objectives Of Employment Regulation
Activity 1
1.1Explain the aims and objectives of employment regulation.
The aim of employment law regulation is to provide legal protection to employees
and employers the relationship between businesses.
Objectives of Employment Law:
Social justice is the distribution of difference in society and is based on equality and
its opportunity.
Within the workplace, social justice also refers to access to rights and fairness.
Employee protection employment rights are designed to balance the expectations of
the job with the fair treatment of the employee doing it. Employee rights at work
come from both as statutory rights and his/her employment contract.
European law
As part of the European Union, the UK is a subject to European law, with European
law having authority and take the place of any domestic law. This means that
domestic law should be done in the same way with European law.
Most EU law is also introduced into UK law via statutes. European Union directive
can be interpreted into domestic law as it is less specific and most European Union
influence on UK employment law has been through directives.
The sources of employment law are:
Legislation
European law
Codes of practice regulations.
The main source of employment law is statutes:

and the destruction of self pride. It portrays the atrocities that occurred due to
Japan s overt Nationalism and how it not only affected its enemies, but also every
civilian that were present at the time of World War II. This criticism is personified
through the main characters. Furthermore, Anime is usually known for its
flamboyant and outlandish animation (Yegulalp). However, Grave of the Fireflies,
despite being a popular Anime, exhibits emotional themes and portrays realistic
events and themes that reflects its time period (Ebert). Grave of the Fireflies was
released in 1988 as a double feature film in conjunction with Hayao Miyazaki s My
Neighbor Totoro (Toyama). Each film has contrasting qualities; Takahata s Grave of
the Fireflies deals with realistic and emotionally devastating themes, whereas
Miyazaki s My Neighbor Totoro portrays lighthearted themes such as innocence, and
are more popular with family audiences. My Neighbor Totoro is more prevalent with
western audiences because of its... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Takahata criticizes Japan s self pride through the film s examination of how the
children suffered. This self pride is seen through Japan s Nationalism and the main
character, Seita, himself. Seita, throughout the film, captures these Nationalist
ideals of righteousness and vengeance. Other than this Nationalism, his self
delusion and unwavering pride is also the result of Setsuko s death. So, how does
Grave of the Fireflies show how pride can be destructive? Historical and cultural
contexts, as well as the film s characterizations should be examined to understand
how self pride can be destructive. Takahata s Grave of the Fireflies is a criticism of
how self pride ultimately led to the suffering of Seita and Setsuko, whether it is by
Japan s fault or the main character
27. Compare Antigone And Civil Disobedience
In both Letters from a Birmingham Jail and Antigone , Civil disobedience
becomes the answer to conflicts both fictional and in reality. Antigone and Martin
Luther King, Jr. are both icons for defying certain laws and people in charge in
attempts to fight for what they believe in. Although they both technically broke the
law to support a cause, Antigone and King had different approaches in doing so
and different goals. Antigone openly defied her leader in a direct way to accomplish
a singular goal, while King s defiance had a more complex goal in which his civil
disobediencewas only facet of. King s goal was unity and equality amongst people
while Antigone fought to bring honor to her brother. Also, the way in which they
perform the disobedience varies, the steps each one takes reflects their feelings
and the goals they were seeking. Between the two, I sympathize more with King,
as I feel his actions and goal was overall more noble and intricate. Despite the
difference in outcome, both Antigone s and king s goals were commendable and
both rebels payed the ultimate price for their deed. In both of these pieces of
literature, civil disobedience is seen as a necessary tactic for fighting for what one
believes is right and although different, Antigone and King inspire generations of
protests to this day.
In Sophocles Antigone, Antigone decides that her brother s honor is worth more
than her own life. She willingly sacrifices her life as well as the last bit of honor her

30. Hearing Loss Theory
Can hearing loss really lead to dementia and Alzheimer s disease? This theory has
been tossed around quite a bit lately, but there s no reason for alarm; however,
there are a few things you need to know, if you want to do everything possible to
avoid a potential issue. So first let s talk about the theory then we ll talk about what
you can do to reduce your chances of having to deal with dementia or Alzheimer s
disease caused by hearingloss.
The Theory Behind Hearing Loss Causing Dementia and Alzheimer s Disease
There are conclusions behind several theories as to why hearing loss could possibly
lead to dementia and Alzheimer s disease. Several researchers have concluded that
hearing loss could lead to cognitive load. This means when hearing loss occurs the
brain has to strain to decode sounds because their clarity is jumbled and therefore has
to reallocate many of its resources just to hear, which in turn limits other brain
functions. Another theory is that hearing loss causes brain atrophy in the parts of the
brain that process sound, which means a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

be given and since the tests are ongoing we aren t able to provide you with a
definite answer at this time. However, anyone with a hearing problem should be
seeking treatment whether they believe it could lead to dementia and Alzheimer s
disease or not. There is another problem though, which is that although millions of
adults over 70 years of age experience hearing loss, fewer than 30 percent of them
will consent to wearing a hearing aid. But now with the potential of hearing loss
leading to dementia and early correction of such being a potential solution, this will
hopefully encourage adults with hearing loss to actively engage in wearing a hearing
aid as the benefits will most certainly outweigh the
31. A Rose For Emily Narrator Essay
Narration can be used to manipulate a story. The author chooses who and how a
story is told. It can manipulate the reader s views of characters and situations in
the story. The point of view that A Rose for Emily was written in was third person.
It served as a collective town voice and let the reader in on the thoughts and
opinions the townspeople had on Miss Emily. This type of narration can be used to
detach a reader from the story or characters, but in Faulkner s case he wrote it in a
way that the narratoris slowly pushing us to feel empathy for Miss Emily. The
narrator is an unidentified voice that seems to work as a collective voice for the
townspeople. The narrator is unbiased and gives out the town gossip with no side
note on his/her thoughts. The reader can then take the information and do with it
what they please. The unbiased thoughts can bring us closer to Miss Emily. They
let us hear her story from an outsider s view and we as readers are making up our
own thoughts and opinions on Miss Emily as we read through the flashbacks of the
story. The narrator conveys his/her disgust in the way they look at Miss Emily
through the opening line of the story. The men through a sort of respectful affection

gossip about Miss Emily. In A Rose for Emily Faulkner writes, So the next day we

he or she does not side with the gossip all the time. Seeing that can make us as
readers feel empathy for Miss Emily. Having rumors and gossip sent around about
yourself could be quite upsetting, and for that we feel compassion for Miss Emily,

33. The Reflection Of Authority In Johnathan Swift s Vision...
Things as They Really Are Johnathan Swift penned, Vision is the Art of seeing what
is invisible to others. The human eye is miraculous and achieves incredible feats,
from spotting galaxies millions of light years away to perceiving invisible colors.
However, Swift was not implying the marvelous function of sight but embraces a
different phenomenon of human nature. A common trend among human beings is to
limit their sight to physical objects, as well as limiting themselves to what they want
to condone as truth. Swift s vision is beyond one s self, a vision that perceives
situations, consequences and changes that normal sight cannot. Vision that embraces
truth and applies the truth to the viewer s life. As an apostle of our Lord JesusChrist
Elder David A. Bednar has been gifted with a special vision and authority. At a
devotional on Brigham Young University Idaho campus, Elder Bednar utilized his
apostolic authority to raise a voice of warning by discussing elements of our
Heavenly Father s plan of happiness, methods of attack used by the adversary to
distract us and the responsibilities that rest upon the rising generation to see things
as they really are. Elder Bednar wields his apostolic authority balanced with a
parental rather than professional tone to exhort a highly distracted student body to
view their destinies at risk. As an apostle of Jesus Christ, Elder Bednar is an
authority figure that people look up to for guidance and instruction. This apostolic

Outer Ear: The Pinna gathers sound and sends it down the ear canal. The twists
and folds of the pinna enhance high frequency (pitched) sounds and also help us to
determine the direction of the sound source (AAC). Ear wax is developed by two
thirds of the ear s external canal, the remaining is bone. The Meatus or ear canal is
a 2 3 cm of cartilage that strengthens the sound coming in. Middle Ear: The
Tympanic Membrane is hit by sound waves causing the eardrum to vibrate as such
then transferring that energy into mechanical energy. Out of the eardrum and onto
three bones, Malleus which is connected to the drum passing sounds on to the Incus
that sits on top of the hammer and collects vibrations. Ending with the Stapes which
is responsible for compression of the waves so they can travel through the inner ear.
The Cochlea is home to many nerve cells that are capable of damaging and are
impossible to grow back. The Cochlea s frequency selectivity refers to the ability of
the auditory system to identify tonal components in complex sound. It largely
depends on the filtering ability of the cochlea and its tuning properties are determine
by the amplification mechanisms of the cochlear outer hair cells (BioMedical
Engineering). The Auditory Nerve sends all electrical impulses to the brain, starting
the process of

Bodybuilding Nutrition
Bodybuilding is a sport where men and women s goal is to achieve a symmetrical
and muscular physique with low body fat percentages, usually in order to win a
competition. Many factors go into reaching these goals such as resistant training,
genetics, mental will power and nutrition. While all of these factors are important to a
bodybuilder, nutrition seems to be one of the most important, most researched and
most tested and manipulated branch of the bodybuilders lifestyle. Specifically, the
effects of protein on a bodybuilder, the ideal macronutrient ratios (carbs, fat, and
protein) for fat loss and muscle maintenance. and nutrition s effect on resistance
training recovery have been studies to further optimize a bodybuilders physique.
The important yet controversial topic of optional protein intake has been a hot
topic for years in many areas such as the needs for sedentary induvial, sports
athletes, Olympic athletes and bodybuilders. However it is generally agreed upon
that while the RDA standard of .75 .80 g/kg of body weight a day is enough to
keep those with physical activities in there day to day life in a positive nitrogen
balance, this is not the case for bodybuilders due to their goals of increasing muscle
mass and intense training. (Masedu, Ziruolo, Valenti, Di Giulio, 2012) A more
beneficial protein intake for bodybuilders should sit around 1.7 2.2 g/kg of body
weight a day if the induvial wants to see optimal results with regards to

could also happen for other bird that accidently drop their seeds when they dispose
of the hull or because it was a bad seed. The groups calculated how many seeds
were ate by the birds by counting the amount of times a bird visited the feeder, but
this does not mean that the bird actually ate the seed. These are all possible sources
of error that could have affected the results of the Chi Square Test, therefore throwing

39. Physical And Psychological And Sexual Abuse
Abuse is so common in today s day and age; it s used like a language. Some people
are immune to it; that s all that they have been introduced to whether male or
female. It s a language that only people who have not taken a recollection nor
responsibility to the issue at hand. This leads into BWS which is classified as a
psychiatric condition named Battered Woman Syndrome. The actual definition of this
disease from Wikipedia is Battered person syndromeis a physical and psychological
condition of a person who has suffered emotional, physical, or sexual abuse from
another person . According to the Psychiatric Times, it has been in the medical field
for more than 30 years. However, even being in the medical field it is not recognized
as serious until reported and or visually seen numerous times.
Physical, Psychological and Sexual abuse has been presented in multiple settings
as harmful and dangerous. When these things happen, unfortunately the victim is
largely blamed and asked questions based on if they meant for what happened to
them, as a direct action to inflict pain towards themselves. As is true, multiple cases
of the described forms of abuse are reported almost half of the cases are dropped
due to the withdraw from victims. Withdrawal due to fear and issues of life or
death; they no longer wish to press charges. From my sources in the Psychiatric
Times ; they explained that gender violence is fostered by the socialization of men .

40. Oil Drilling and Pollution
One way that drilling for oil destroys animals homes is that fossil fuels create
carbon dioxide, and then that burned carbon dioxide goes into the atmosphere and
then Global Warming is starting to melt the ice caps that animals live on. Also,
drilling the new wells that we have to drill to get the oil, that makes the amount of
land for the animals to make homes go down, and when the land amount goes down
so does the length of the animals, like the polar bear, go down. The average length of
the polar bears mating season is about from the months March until May. Where
they want to reproduce is normally around where seals like to be. But then When
Global Warming gets more and more threatening, they have nowhere to go now.
Males tend to be very aggressive during the mating period, so that kills off the
population even more. When the female gets pregnant, she gains at least 44o
pounds because once the ice breaks, she won t be able to hunt for food. Another
reason is that if we happen to have an oil spill, that will devastate all the animals in
the Arctic. For example, the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill was created
because when the BP operated rig Macondo Prospect exploded. The area in the Gulf
that was affected by the spill was eight thousand five hundred miles, to nine thousand,
four hundred and twenty one miles in 2010. But, the use of technology has really
helped the oil and gas industry because it has stopped useless drilling. An example of
this would be the
41. Summary Of The HACU National Internship Program
As a first generation college student and an alumnus of the HACU National
Internship Program (Summer 2016) I have faced academic adversities but have also
experienced the benefits of the HACU HNIP first hand. Last summer as an intern
for the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs I was able to grow academically,
personally, and professionally through HNIP. Having been part of the program has
motivated me to want to continue to grow professionally and I believe that HACU
can facilitate this growth. In addition to this, being the first in my family to pursue an
education beyond that of a high schooldiploma and seeing the effects on my family
is the driving force behind my pursuit of success. Prior to my acceptance to a four

42. A Brief Note On Fracking And Its Effects On The World
Waterless Fracking: GasFrac For many years now, oil and gas have been harvested
from deep beneath the Earth s surface using thousands and millions of gallons of
water, known as hydraulic fracking. Environmental critics have brought up issues
with this type of fracking. The main being that while using these massive amounts of
water every time a well is fracked, all the used water, when finished, is causing
significant amounts of pollution. In response to the current criticism, engineers have
developed waterless fracking operations, where propanegel, butane, and other liquid
and gas alternatives are used to break the shale that is deep beneath the Earth s
surface. Even though this new water free system does not use the massive amounts of
water like its hydraulic counterpart, there are still critics saying that it has its own
environmental impacts. Assessing these impacts and therefore the philosophical
justifications for this sort of method provides support for its continued use.
I : Background Though completely different approaches to fracking were
introduced over the last decade, the thought and process of fracking isn t new.
Within the oil and gas industries, fracking is any method that involves the forcing of
many different substances into the fully grown to access oil or gas in the layers of
sedimentary rock. While drilling is done vertically, fracking occurs horizontally
(MacRae). Increasing need for access to natural gas and oil in this country and the
belief that
43. Life After Death Analysis
A picture is worth a thousand words. Every person has heard, been told, or even
read this quote. There are those images that attract the eyes immediately with its
abstract features and colors. Then there are the pictures with deep, symbolic
messages trying to persuade. However, some images are made specifically for the
purpose to promote someone or a product, and they usually use methods that
guarantee will either be controversial, or popular. For example, in the music industry,
the main purpose is to stand out. One of the music bands that always stand out are
Iron Maiden. Derek Riggs, the artist of most of the band s artwork, created the
famous album artwork: Life After Death in 1985. Many people can see the relation
of the dark theme album to the band s dark, heavy rock music. Derek Rigg was
inspired mainly by the main mascot of the band, which is a skeleton, named Eddie. It
is presumably rising from the death, or from its grave with the headstone reading,
Edward T H : the mascots full name. The visual analysis includes the complex forms
and colors that surround the dark theme. The colors, setting and tone are the most
essential when it comes to the final understanding of what the image wants to portray.
The main colors of the artwork Life After Death are the complimentary blue and
yellow. There is no other colors, however, the artwork looks like it is full of life and
strangely, colorful. The main background color is blue, that fades into a few shades
darker as the
44. Joy Luck Club Mother-Daughter Relationship Essay
East West Values and the Mother daughter Relationship in The Joy Luck Club
The dominant theme of The Joy Luck Club is the clash between Chinese, American
cultures, and how it affects the relationship between mothers and daughters. All of
the mothers in the book were born and raised in China. All of their daughters were
born and raised in the United States. Because of the differences in family traditions
and values between the way the mothers had been raised in China and the way their
daughters were growing up in America, there was bound to be a clash between the
two generations. Perhaps the most dramatic example of how East West conflicting
traditions and values affected a mother daughter relationship was that of Suyuan Woo

No singing sound, complained my mother. June defended the girl against her
mother s perfectionism: What are you picking on her for? I said carelessly. She s
pretty good. Maybe she s not the best, but she s trying hard. The mother rejoins:
Just like you, she said. Not the best. Because you not trying. (Tan 136) The
television show gave Suyuan a model for how June could excel and the mother
worked cleaning house for a piano teacher to give June lessons and a second hand
piano for her to practice on. June is aghast at her mother s plans for her. She
thought she had been sent to hell. I whined and then kicked my foot a little when I
couldn t stand it anymore. June asks, Why don t you like me the way I am? I am
not a genius! I cannot play the piano. And even if I could, I wouldn t go on TV if
you paid me a million dollars! I cried. Her mother is equally appalled by June s
insolence and disobedience. Disrespect for her elders and ingratitude for what her
parents were providing in the way of opportunity was unknown in a daughter from
the old China. Suyuan preserved and forced June to practice but June soon found
ways to subvert the system and refuse to play as well as she might have. The climax
came during a talent show in a church hall. The mother invited all of her friends from
the Joy Luck Club to witness her daughter s first recital. June started okay but then
found that she was playing the

46. Let s Talk About Love Chapter 1 Analysis
Let s Talk about Love: A Journey to the End of Taste centers on Carl Wilson s quest
to discover why we like and dislike certain aspects of our larger culture. Within this
search he finds how cultural taste relates to how humans perceive both each other
and themselves. Each chapter is an exploration into one part of taste and how it
relates to the world beyond the book. In Chapter 7, Wilson explores objectivity.
Specifically, he asks: is there any objectivity in artistic taste? (Wilson 75). In other
words, Wilson is questioning whether objectivity can exist at all in the artistic sphere,
or if taste is ultimately ruled by subjectivity and bias. In addition to this question,
Wilson also asks how the existenceof objectivity or lack thereof... Show more content

Wilson describes a project performed by two Russian artists who created an
America s Most Wanted painting and song based on what voters most enjoyed
seeing and hearing. The products of these polls were nowhere near the works that
critics considered objectively tasteful and, in fact, most would not find the poll
products pleasing to the eye or ear. The results of the project lead Wilson to make
the claim that the mechanisms of democracy are hopeless for art (Wilson 78). In
the United States and much of the Western world, democracy is the only way to be
truly objective. The people choose the objectively best leaders of a given country. It
becomes clear that democracy as objectivity cannot be translated to discussions of
artistic taste. This means there is at least one way in which trying to find objectivity
in artistic taste fails. Later, Wilson describes how what is considered tasteful is often
the result of the part mimesis imitation plays in taste (Wilson 81). As humans we are
curious what everybody else is hearing, want to belong, want to have things in
common [with others] to talk about and are in

Finding A Purpose Can Help You Find Bliss in Life and at Work The word purpose
comes from the Old French word purpos and the combination of the Anglo French
words purpos and proposer. Purpose is defined as the reason for which something
is done or created or for which something exists. In its verb form it means to have
as one s intention or objective. As a noun, it proposes a state of being. Dan
Pontefract, author of The Purpose Effect: Building Meaning in Yourself, Your Role
and Your Organization, describes a three way relationship between one s own sense

This can mean less engagement and a worsening work ethic. When an individual s
purpose is not being met, he or she can become lethargic, isolated, and apathetic.
Pontefract would like his readers to consider the trifecta as a three legged bar
stool. When one leg is uneven or broken, things start to crumble, whether it be the
individual, the company, or the society. Those who lack direction when such
scenarios arise, simply go through the motions, waiting until their voice matters.
They are stomped under the shoes of their senior leaders who simply pursue their
professional goals. Just an inch off of one leg of the barstool can lead to
devastation. However, when you can witness someone working hard to fulfill their
discovered purpose, you can see them grow, and discover joy and self confidence.
When you do it, your life begins to thrive and blossom. When the organization
delineates their own direction and mission, and it happens to benefit all parties of the
enterprise owners, employees, customers, the community, and the environment not
just the ones at the top, it allows positivity to spread like the light from a sunrise. As
Pontefract states that when personal, organizational, and role purpose become
symbiotic, the pro s outweigh the con s time and time again. Take Lindsay Hemric
for example. In 2010, Hemric chose to work for
