Who Is Rick Blaine In Casablanca
Screening Report of Casablanca In Michael Curtiz s film, Casablanca , the character Richard
Blaine has an internal conflict that reflects the feelings of the refugees in Cuba. He also exhibits
the power of love. Richard Blaine is a saloon owner in Casablanca. He is very cynical in his
actions. Rick is also very uninterested by anyone of his guests in the saloon. He seems detached
from his surroundings even though he is worshipped by the customers. Rick likes to remain alone
and mysteries and will not have drinks with any companions. His actions and character may stem
from emotional distress from his past. Richard seems as though if he is waiting for someone or
something to return to him in Casablanca. Refugees in Casablanca are waiting for an escape to
America. They are somewhat prisoners of Casablanca. This idea of confinement is shown
throughout the film when many people are trading massive amounts of currency or themselves for
passes to Lisbon.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She shows up quite abruptly in the saloon, only to run into Richard. However, she is not alone.
Isla is accompanied by her husband, Victor Laszlo. As the film portrays the meeting of Isla,
Victor, and Richard, you can see that there is in fact tension between Isla and Rick. Richard
appears visibly affected by the meeting. This is a turning point in the film. Richard s longing for
his long lost love has finally came to an end. He now has a chance to see, touch, and interactive
with a past figment of his imagination. This emotional event causes Richard to become heavily
intoxicated to mask the effects Isla has on him. This can be compared to the crime that happens in
Casablanca by the refugees. The refugees are good, honest people; however, they are faced with a
loss of hope, making these refugees act out in to criminal activities to achieve their goals of leaving
communist command. Humans, when faced with physical or emotional distress, will always try to
ease the

Theories Of Resilience
2.1. What is resilience?
The word resilience is derived from the Latin word resilire which translates as to bounce back , it
can be described as a dynamic process, encompassing positive adaptation within the context of
significant adversity (Luthar, Cicchetti, Becker, 2000). In cases where children have experienced
trauma or are living in high stress environments, resilience has been defined as the capacity to adapt
and thrive despite challenging and threatening circumstances (Masten, 2001). Resilience is not
something some children have a lot of , it is something that develops as a result of complex
transactions between the child and their environment (Sroufe, 1997). It is perceived as a crucial
element in maintaining and promoting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Key to promoting children s resilience is therefore, a greater understanding of these protective
factors that enable some children to be resilient (The Mental Health Foundation, 1999). There is
evidence to suggest that it is easier to change a younger child s behaviour than it is to change the
behaviour of an older child, indicating why early intervention is crucial (Smith, 2002). Considering
the ecology of human development framework theorized by Bronfenbrenner (1979) in relation to
resilience displays that interventions at multiple levels need to take place concurrently (Edwards et

Cleaning Up The Philadelphia Sewage Systems
Cleaning Up the Philadelphia Sewage Systems Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is one of the biggest
cities on the east coast possessing more than fifteen hundred people. Our Philadelphia water
department is dedicated to providing clean water to all living things throughout the city. One of the
biggest problems faced by our water department is the litter problem that plagues the city. Taking
care of the old infrastructure of the sewer is one of the sewers is very important when it comes to
protecting our waterways from wastewater. Many people are affected by these problems, including
our children and pregnant women. The problem does not lie within one particular community, but
all throughout the city of Philadelphia. Being careless and selfish... Show more content on

This effects community funds as well, which means less money for schools which is a big
problem within Philadelphia. People do have a big effect on the problem within the city because
they are so careless and do not think of the effects that their actions have on the environment. The
1900s led to the start of dealing with the contaminated drinking water throughout the city. The first
step was constructing five filtration plants and using chlorine to treat the water. The Sewage
system treatment plants in Philadelphia were constructed in 1950 to 1966 this consisted of the
three plants to the right. The government regulations and funding are what determine the
technologies and methods that we develop to treat and manage our water systems. Today we
have for the most part dealt with the problem of contaminated water, but we still face some
problems with bacteria. This especially affects the vulnerable part of our population like pregnant
women and children and make them sick. This is a problem that runs city wide and if it does not
get the attention that it needs we could see some very dire effects. Philadelphia over the years has
improved its methods of cleaning up the water with the development of technology along with the
knowledge gained from past experiences. The city of Philadelphia has adopted the three step

Project Quality Management Chapter 8 Discussion Questions...
Project Quality Management CHAPTER 8 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Q1.Discuss some of the examples of poor quality in information technology projects presented in
the What Went Wrong? section. Could most of these problems have been avoided? Why do you
think there are so many examples of poor quality in information technology projects?
Answer: Many of these problems could be avoided by performing better quality management. One
problem is that software and hardware is hitting the market too fast, so people selling these might
be more concerned about money than safety or wellbeing of the consumers or the company in the
long term.
Q2.What are the main processes included in planning project quality management?
Answer: The project quality ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Describe typical benchmarks associated with a college or university.
Answer: Benchmarking generates ideas for quality improvements by comparing specific project
practices or product characteristics to those of other projects or products within or outside the
performing organization.
Benchmarks help you compare project practices or product characteristics to others within or
outside the organization. Typical benchmarks with a college or university include rankings, student
/faculty ratio, acceptance rate, graduation rate, percentage of faculty with Ph.D.s, etc.
Q5.What are the three main categories of outputs of quality control?
Answer: * The main outputs of quality control are: * Acceptance decisions * Rework * Process
adjustments * There are Seven Basic Tools of Quality that help in performing quality control
Q6.Provide examples of when you would use the Seven Basic Tools of Quality on an information
technology project.
Answer: The seven tools are: * Cause and Effect Diagrams used to identify the underlying
symptoms of a problem or effect as a means of finding the root cause. * Pareto Charts: Based
upon the Pareto Principle that states that 80% of a problem is attributable to 20% of its causes, or
inputs, a Pareto Chart organizes and displays information in order to show the relative importance
of various problems or causes of problems. * Flow

General Demand Function Of Desktop Computers
The general demand function represents the relationship between the demand of a product or
service and the following six factors: the price of the product or service, the consumers income,
price of related goods or services, the taste patterns of consumers, expected price of the good in
some future period and number of the consumers in the market (Thomas Maurice, 2012, pp. 40).
This general demand function can be applied to all products and services to forecast the quantity
that will be demanded based on the current market trends. The remainder of this paper will apply
this general demand function to desktop computers and how the various factors affect the product
demand.
The first factor to analyze is the price of desktop computers. Like all goods and services in the
market, the price and the quantity demanded are inversely related as described in the law of
demand. If the price of desktop computers rises, the demand will decrease. Similarly, if the price
of desktop computers falls, the demand will rise. Consumers often watch for prices to drop or
sales to occur before making big purchases to. Due to the inverse relationship between the demand
and the price of the computers, the slope parameter would have a negative sign. This negative sign
denotes that as one piece of the equation changes, the other will move in the opposite direction.
The second factor of the general demand function is the consumers income. Desktop computers are
considered a normal good, or

Papilary Thyroid Cancer
Introduction: There has been much research done on thyroid cancer. The thyroid gland is located
below the Adam s apple in one s neck. In order for a thyroid gland to be considered normal, the
patient should not be experiencing any symptoms that would be the result of having too much or
too little thyroidhormones being produced by the gland.
The thyroid gland has a butterfly shape, which contains 2 lobes right and left with a narrow gap, or
isthmus, in the middle connecting these two lobes1. (Figure 1).
Figure 1 | An overview of the thyroid gland.
The thyroid gland has 2 main types of cells. There are the follicular cells that help regulate
metabolism, and there are C cells (also called parafollicular cells) that make calcitonin, ... Show

This type is characterized by slow growth, and a low mortality rate. This carcinoma develops in
only one lobe, and responds well to treatment. The downside to this type of cancer is that its most
common metastatic site is the lymph nodes in the neck. Activating mutations of the tyrosine
receptor kinases RET and NTRK, and of the intracellular signaling effectors RAS and BRAF are
present in a mutually exclusive fashion in more than 70% of cases of this type of cancer1.
Medullary thyroid carcinoma: This type of thyroid cancer occurs in about 4% of the population,
develops from the C cells of the thyroid gland1. The most concerning aspect of this cancer is the
fact that by the time it is diagnosed, it has spread to lymph nodes, lungs, liver, or the bones1.
Medullary thyroid cancers (MTC) cause the patient s body to release too much calcitonin and a
protein called carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) into the blood1. MTC also does not absorb
radioactive iodine that would be helpful in its treatment and to see if it had metastasized. The
prognosis is much worse for this type of cancer than the previously discussed differentiated types.
The two types of MTC are Sporadic MTC, which only impacts one thyroid lobe through a somatic
mutation and is not inherited, and Familial MTC, which is an inherited cancer that is caused by a
germ line mutation1. In addition, these patients usually have cancer in several areas of both

Tornado Recovery Summary
This summary will cover the lessons learned and any suggestions necessary concerning the
following disaster. On May 22, 2011 a tornado spawned east of the Missouri Kansas state line
from a massive supercell thunderstorm that quickly escalated into an EF 5 monster. This monster
tornado tore a half mile to three quarter mile wide path of total destruction through Joplin,
Missouri claiming 161 lives (Smith Sutter, 2013). The response by the local and state government
was immediate bringing in a combination of public and private sector efforts. Joplin is one of the
few disasters that displayed how recovery efforts should be executed. Public sectors after the
disaster focused mainly on clearing debris and bringing the community back into normalcy, while
the private sector... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One key factor that helped in the timely recovery of Joplin was the massive volunteer sector efforts.
There were more than 92,000 registered volunteers that came from the United States and as far
away as Japan to help restore the community (Smith Sutter, 2013). To house all of these volunteers
FEMA provided temporary housing units for the volunteers and displaced victims. Immediately
after the tornado, the American Red Cross set up shelters for the displaced victims and within two
weeks of the disaster they also had a long term recovery committee functioning. Along with the
tremendous response from public, private, and volunteer sectors the social media network
contributed a huge role in coordinating relief. Most notably the local churches of St. Paul and
College Heights utilized Facebook to contact churches outside of Joplin bringing in faith based
organizations from all over the United States (Smith Sutter, 2013). The most fascinating aspect of
Joplin s recovery was the autonomous nature that the private and public sectors were able to
perform under. This can be

Comparing Dynastic China And Ancient Egypt
Introduction:
Looking over the shoulder of history, Dynastic China and Egypt were perhaps two of the most
substantial, long lasting, and abiding civilizations. A dynasty is simply defined as a succession of
rulers from the same family. The ancient Egyptian dynasty was present from about 3100 to 332
BC. It was ruled in the Arab Republic of Egypt. Ancient dynastic China, which lasted from about
1000 BC to 500 AD, lay in the Yellow River Valley. It can be seen that both of these societies
shared quite a few cultural similarities. For example, in Egypt, as well as China, polytheism was a
dominant religious belief. Also, they were both primarily well developed in technology and tools.

But, they definitely were not limited to simply working the home. There were many professions
and jobs offered to women at the time. It also should be noted that the range of jobs that were
available for them were based on social class rather than gender. On top of working within the
home, attending to household chores and caring for their children, the lower class women of
the ancient Egyptian society also had the duty of working outside tending livestock and in the
fields, especially during harvest. Occupations such as skilled weavers, mourners, musicians,
stewards, composers, singers, dancers, beer brewers, and bakers were also accessible to women
of any social class. Educated or wealthy women were offered professional positions such as
administrators, priestesses, or supervisors. In some instances, they became judges, overseers,
governors, doctors, or even prime ministers because of their ability to read and write. If a
woman held the same job as a man, she received the same income and rations as a man received
for the work, and so her wages made an important contribution to the family s wealth. Unlike the
Egyptian women s broad range of career options, the average Chinese women s work centered
primarily on the home. Tasks such as preparing food, cleaning and looking after children were the
norm for the majority of women in ancient China. They were expected to have many children and
most women felt the pressure to bear a son. It was common for women to take up manual labour in
the home. Spinning, weaving and sewing were common occupations. Some peasant women worked
in the fields with their husbands. As per the dominant religion of the time, Confucian, women were
inferior to men. Men and women were not equal in Confucius s eyes. The only real job in which
the ancient Chinese women had was to bear

Comparing Media Images Of Criminological Research Essay
iii.Comparing Media Images to Criminological Research
The superhero genre is so popular and influential that many studies have been done on its
depictions of the groups and the impact it has on a large part of society how it has become a
staple on film, television, and in video games (Darowski). The genre is so influential in fact,
that it dates back all the way to the Ancient Greeks, and possibly even further (Haynes). Every
group in history has had their mythologies and epic tales of crime fighters, they just did not call
them superheroes. For example, Achilles only had one weakness (his heel) and was by the
Greeks definition, considered a hero (greek gods.org). The same goes for heroes like Perseus,
Theseus, and even Heracles. Back then though instead of being changed into a super soldier in a
lab by a German scientist or creating a flying metal suit in the desert, these heroes were part god
which explained their extra ordinary abilities. Super crime fighters have always existed, but when
comic books began in the 19th century a new set of rules was created to guide their content to be
more appropriate than the Greek tales (Coville).
The Comics Code was a list of regulations regarding the depiction of certain events in comic books
maintained by the Comics Magazine Association of America (Nyberg). The code was very strict
and eventually challenged by Stan Lee (one of the creators of Marvel) through a story arc in the
Spiderman Comics that dealt with drug abuse.

Example Of Case Study Oedema
Outline of case and Objectives
The case that this literature review deals with is the management of a 44 year old female patient
presenting with signs and symptoms of pulmonary oedema. She has a cardiac history of having
angina and left sided heart failure. She had also experienced pulmonary oedema about 2 months
prior to this ambulance call out and while she was being treated in hospital for the pulmonary
oedema she had a pleural tap inserted as she presented with a pleural effusion. Chronic medications
prescribed to this patient are isordil, asprin (300mg daily) and Lasix (to which she occasionally
defaults off of).
Pulmonary oedema results when there is an accumulation of excess fluid in the interstitial and
alveolar spaces of the lung that make up the extravascular compartment of the lungs. Pulmonary

study that I found relevant was the comparison of all three drugs used in the treatment of
pulmonary oedema namely nitroglycerine, morphine sulphate and furosemide. In this study the
authors compared four treatment protocols in patients with presumed cardiogenic pulmonary
oedema and classed tem into different groups, depending on which drug protocol they received.
They were then able to compare the results, the adverse effects and the success rates of the different
drug protocols and make certain recommendations based on the evidence obtained from their

Samoan Creation Myths
While creation myths around the world might be distinct, being representative of a diverse set of
given culture and its beliefs of the role of humans in time and space, many creation myths share
common themes and motifs. Creation myths are always built on one of these five universal
foundations: creation from nothing, creation from chaos, creation from world parents, earthdiver
creation, and emergence creation through a hole in the earth. In the Norse creation myth, Odin and
his two other brothers killed Ymir after being persuaded by the threat of a growing Jotun
population. Odin, Vili, and Ve took Ymir s corpse to Gunnungagap and turned different parts of his

In the Samoan creation myth, the decay of the vines that god Tagaloa sent to spread over the rocks
had resulted in worms. Tagaloa had then given these worms arms, legs, a head, and a beating heart;
thus becoming the first humans. In Norse mythology, worms kept crawling out of the remains of
Ymir s corpse and the worms eventually turned into dwarves. Four dwarves named Nordi, Vestri,
Sundri, and Audri were given the task of holding up the four corners of the sky representing the
four cardinal directions; north, west, south, and east respectively. Other creation myths that place
importance on the four cardinal directions are the Cherokee creation myth and the Chinese creation
myth. When Pangu dies, his arms and legs became the four directions. Furthermore, the Cherokee
creation myth describes earth as this floating island surrounded entirely by water, hanging from the
sky through cords arranged and attached to the four cardinal points. Although creation myths are
unique in their own way, many of them are built around the same symbols and themes of the
dismemberment of a world parent, the presence of animals and other organisms such as worms, the

The Melancholic Tone of The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe Essay
The Melancholic Tone of The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven, is representing Poe s own introvertedness, which is strangely moving
and attractive to the reader. In his essay entitled The Philosophy of Composition, Poe reveals his
intent in writing The Raven and also describes the work of writing the poem as being carefully
calculated in all aspects. Of all melancholy topics, Poe wished to use the most understood, death,
specifically death involving a beautiful woman.
The tone in Edgar Allan Poe s The Raven represents a painful state of mind, a mind that is
vulnerable to madness that is brought upon by the death of his beloved lady. Which is representing

The raven patronizes Poe that he will never see his lost love again when uttering, forget this lost
Lenore (Thompson, 83). Alcohol taunts Poe into never ending depression and caused Poe to
have a life long problem with alcoholism, which led to his death. In a similar way that the alcohol
explored Poe s inner devastation, the raven gives a look into the narrator s innermost fears that he
will never see his Lenore again. In the first stanza, questioning from what direction the tapping
came, he throws open the door, the narrators nemesis not to be found. In fact it was some other
realm that must have been opened up about his lost love and the noise, which is driving him
insane. The narrator then opens the shutter, which could be interpreted as opening his soul to the
outside world. To his surprise, he discovers a raven, a beast upon the sculptured bust above his
chamber door (Thompson, 53). The raven directs all further action in the poem, it ridicules and
patronizes the narrator throughout the poem and its evil force creates a sense of suffering and
anguish within the character. The climax of the poem is when the narrator faces his confused and
disordered world and in the narrator s madness he cries out, Get thee back into the tempest and the
Night s Plutonian shore! (Thompson, 98).
Poe s use of symbolism was influential in making the literary reputation of The Raven . The raven

Essay about Clancy of the Overflow
Clancy of the Overflow Analysis
Bush poetry gives people a unique and interesting prospective into the people who made this
country the way it is today and the history behind it. Clancy of the Overflow is a well known
bush poem by poet AB Banjo Paterson. Clancy of the overflow is about a person from the city who
met a drover/ shearer named Clancy. After meeting him he becomes jealous of Clancy s lifestyle
which is better than his city life. In this poem Banjo uses a variety of poetic devices to get his
message across like the use of suggestive language, descriptive language and imagery. Banjo uses

Banjo does this to persuade the reader in believing that the country lifestyle which is portrayed
as free, clean and laid back is better than the city lifestyle which is portrayed as dirty, hot and
boring. Banjo also makes the reader believe that the attractiveness of living off the land and
idealizing the country life as a drover making the quality of life in the country seems greater
than in the city. Banjo uses imagery and the first person point of view to help the reader imagine
what it would be like to be a drover. The person living in the city imagines what Clancy the
drover is doing and feeling while he is stuck in a hot office all day. As the stock are slowly
stringing, Clancy rides behind them singing and also He sees the vision splendid of the sunlit
plains extended and at night the wondrous glory of the everlasting stars. The city living character
is conveying what Clancy the drover is doing and how peaceful it would be if he could do the
same. He also says And I somehow fancy that I d like to change with Clancy. This suggests that
the city living character is somewhat jealous of Clancy, his job and his lifestyle. The city living
character furthermore explains the city life as Of the tramways and the buses making hurry down
the street, and the language uninviting of the gutter children fighting . This suggests that the he

Critique on Kingdom Education Essay
Critique on Kingdom Education
Summary
Kingdom education is a process that begins with a child accepting Christ as their Lord and Savior
and continues with the goal of that child reaching maturity in Christ. As such, evangelism and
discipleship are part of a kingdom education that will train children to know God and have a
biblical worldview. This worldview is taught through Biblestories, but is also incorporated into
every subject and into educational methods that reflect a biblical philosophy.
Ultimately, parents are responsible before God for their child; however, it is the role of the church
and the school to support the parents in their God given responsibility. In Kingdom education, these
three cords must work in harmony to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kingdom education has two purposes. The first is universal and involves the call of God upon
each child to accept him as Lord and Savior. The second is personal and involves training each
child to obey God s individual call to serve him throughout their earthly life. Schools prepare
students to obey God in this world and to stand before God for eternity. (2006, p. 168).
A detrimental philosophical element that exists in society today is dualism. Dualism is the belief
that life, and truth, can be divided into the secular and the spiritual. Some truth and reality is
secular, and some is spiritual. This compartmental view of life causes spiritual truth to be seen as
less accurate and real than scientific fact, and considers God relevant in a religious context, but
irrelevant to most of life. Christians must view all truth as God s truth, and see everything from this
supernatural perspective.
Personal Response
Education plus God equals success. While this statement is true, the job of incorporating the truth
about God into everything taught is becoming increasingly more difficult. Schultz charted public
education s view of reality, truth and value throughout the history of the United States to show how
an unbiblical worldview has increasingly taken hold of society, the educational system and

themselves arrested. The NFL s responses were either a brief suspension or no suspension at all.

Beau Buckley (2001) argue that when there is a lack of accountability in an organization s
leadership, there is an antecedent of unethical behavior within the organization (as cited in
Hoogervorst De Cremer, 2010). The Ivey Business Journal states Without Accountability leaders
don t commit to, or own, the decisions they make, and cannot get others to do so. They blame
others for poor outcomes and in doing so create a culture of fear and disengagement. People stop

offered no solutions that caused a loss of credibility. Following the arrest of Ray Rice, the

outcry, the league went in the opposite direction. This showed inconsistency in leadership, which
can cause inconsistencies in team members. If leaders are consistent in what they pay attention to,

The year of the bland and the boring, the self conscious and the self righteous battle. The year
that was loser like and lame. During my intermediate school period, I didn t succeed of much. To
this day I don t remember much from these years, that s how unimportant they were. I had my
first crush on this man of a boy that I never had a chance with, and still never will. He was the
school sweetheart and almost everyone had a crush on him. With long brown swoopy hair, blue
eyes and crazily tall, how could any fifth grader not fall for him. I never even spoke to him and
got jittery any time I made eye contact passing in the hall. I had a kiddy diary where I wrote
about how I was going to invite him to my birthday party, and he would suddenly fall in love.
This is the only thing that kept me busy during my low life/ no life during fifth and sixth grade.
During this time is most likely when my family and I grew so close. I went through some tough
personal and mental problems and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I remember on one of the first nights somewhere in Indiana, the girls were assigned to the top
floor of the church and the boys were assigned to the auditorium. As soon as all the girls had
finally settled down someone came in and told us we had to move. Me being a lost kid in a herd
of panicking teenage girls I didn t understand what was going on. My mom led all of the girls to
the basement where the boys had already re unloaded their stuff. We set down our blow out beds
quickly on the opposite side of the room and moved tables to separate boys and girls. When I
finally laid down on our squeaky air mattress I heard the sirens. I had to share a bed with my
mom for nine days, which originally seemed like a pain due to her train like snoring. But on this
night I couldn t be happier to hear the sounds of her snoring instead of the scary tornado siren

Wang Lung s In The Good Earth
In the Good Earth, the book s setting of early 20th century China helps to enforce the theme of the
book, which, in my opinion based on the book, is You can t just accept the hand that life deals
you. That s exactly what Wang Lung does. In this book Wang is a farmer in 20th century China.
He doesn t choose this profession, it s the only thing he knows how to do. In China, the farming can
be... unpredictable, rivers may flood one year and run dry the next, swarms of locusts may show
up or rebel soldiers may burn the fields. The farmers had to deal with all of this and more, many
of the farmers (i.e. Ching) would say Heaven wills it (chapter 27, paragraph 8), but Wang Lung
would have none of it, he would curse the gods and stand in the... Show more content on

Due to the fact that women weren t viewed as equals during that time period, Wang Lung treats
his wife, O Lan, like a slave more than anything else. Regardless of this fact, O lan endures the
hardships of being a farmer s wife and living as a poor woman in early 20th century China. That
was one of the more important messages that this book was trying to convey. Pearl Buck wrote
this book at the tail end of the First Wave American Feminism movement and O lan was a strong
female character designed to support the idea that women are equals and really should be
treated thusly. A prime example of this is when O Lan is dying and cannot move from her bed,
Wang Lung admits that he would sell his land to keep her healthy, even though for the majority
of the book he does not treat her well. Although this isn t mentioned directly, he comes to realize
that the main reason for his success after he returned from the south was due to a decision that O
Lan made. She stole jewels from a rich family while they were in the southern city and that led to
Wang Lung s influx of money which, in turn, allowed him to become as rich as he was at the time
of O Lan s

How Did Captain Hayes Attempt To Colonize America
In September 1583, two ships sailed through the rough mid Atlantic ocean toward the New
World. They left Plymouth, England to grab land for Queen Elizabeth. She wanted more land in
the new world for expansion for the English. Edward Hayes was the captain of the ship named
the Golden Hind and the other captain was Sir Humphrey Gilbert and his ship was named the
Squirrel. On September 9th, the look out on the Hind shouted to his captain, that the Squirrel was
going down. Captain Hayes could do nothing as he watched the Squirrel get swamped and was
sent to the bottom of the ocean. The first attempt to colonize America was a failure. Walter Raleigh

The trip would bring some 600 men, five ships and two pinnaces to take control of the new land.
There would be a minister, military members, smiths, carpenters, cooks, shoe makers, coopers,
store masters, and a number of mineral specialists. Ralegh s first step was to send just a few of
his ships and some men over first to set up a beach head. Then he would send some 200 more
men to strengthen their positions. Then settlers and more supplies would be next. If the ships
were to get separated, they were to meet in Puerto Rico. A massive storm off the coast of
Portugal separated the Tiger (which was Grenville s ship) from the rest of the fleet. While waiting
for the other ships, Grenville established relations with the Spanish while also plundering their
ships. Grenville eventually got tired of waiting for the other ships. Grenville decided to leave
Ralph Lane and 107 men to establish a colony at the north end of Roanoke Island. The group left
the ship on August 17, 1585 and built a small fort, believing that Grenville would return in April
1586 with more men and supplies. To this day they have found no information to where the

Similarities Between The Tempest And Frankenstein
Affection blossoms day by day for most relationships, but not all. While some people remain joyful
and pleased in their relationships, Frankenstein and his creature in Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
and Prospero and Caliban in The Tempest by Shakespeare once showed these characteristics, but
conflicts began to grow that turned into complete hatred. As a result of the disputes, it identified
how the creators are similar, how the creation of the creatures are comparable, and how the
relationships between the creator and the creature in each story are related.
To start off, Frankensteinand Prospero share many unique qualities within their stories.
Frankenstein made his creature to be powerful amongst all other human beings. Nonetheless, he

The creature responded to Dr. Frankenstein and said, I was benevolent and good; misery made
me a fiend. Make me happy, and I shall again be virtuous. Frankenstein replied, Begone! I will not
hear you. There can be no community between you and me; we are enemies. Begone, or let us try
our strength in a fight, in which one must fall. The creature states that misery caused him to be
furious, but the goodness inside him never went away when it comes to Dr. Frankenstein. On the
other hand, the creator said that they are no longer acquaintances, but rather rivals. The same
scenario can be said for Prospero and Caliban. Caliban reacted to Prospero s evil doings by using
his knowledge against him. Caliban s maleficent tone claimed, Which first was mine own king,
and here you sty me... You taught me language, and my profit on t Is I know how to curse. The
red plague rid you For learning me your language! He mentions that Prospero was once his king,
which he had great respect for. Nevertheless, Caliban uses his intelligence taught from Prospero as
both revenge and satisfaction.
In conclusion, Frankenstein s and Prospero s similarities and the creation of the creature s, in
Frankenstein, and Caliban s, in The Tempest, similarities all affect the inclusive relationships as a
whole between creator and creature. Their companionship began as joyous and solicitous, but the
creators turned into vile characters, opposing their own partners that they once cared for

Societal Values In Social Work
Being in a social work field, ethical principles and values are significant. Societal values can be
similar to social work ethics, but they can also differ. Our own beliefs may go completely against
the Social Work Code of Ethics. At the same time, they also may align with the ethics perfectly.
Out of the seven societal values that we were given, I have lined them up with the social work
principle values like this: integrity with integrity; importance of human relationships with privacy;
social justicewith equality and social justice; dignity and worth of the person with cultural diversity
and freedom; lastly competence with knowledge building.
According to the NASW Code of Ethics (2008), Social workers behave in a trustworthy manner.
The societal value that falls under this principle is integrity. I feel like this societal value is the
same as the ethical principles and values. Social workers act honestly and responsibly and promote
ethical practices (NASW, 2008). This standard is important in being honest and having solid moral
principles which comply with integrity. Integrity is crucial to both societal values and social work
principles.
Another important societal value that also aligns with NASW Code of Ethics in privacy. Privacy
falls under importance of human relationships. Social workers seek to strengthen relationships
among people in a purposeful effort (NASW, 2008). Every client and every person want privacy
and they deserve it. This ethical standard

Causes Of Twenty First Century Stock Market Volatility Essay
Causes of Twenty First Century Stock Market Volatility based on the Introduction of the Internet
and Day Trading Since the late 1980 s the United States has observed several housing market
bubbles and subsequent collapses (Calabria 2011, p. 552). Also, the country has also observed a
profound increase in the trading of technologies stock (Sabherwal, Sarkar, and Zhang, 2011, p.
1210). In addition, the development of day trading has taken control of nearly half of the stock
trading industry (Chou, Wang, and Wang, 2014, p. 403). As a result, the traditional methods of
company share value evaluation no longer provide an accurate estimate of company value
(Rosenblatt and Gawronski, 2004, p. 118). The introduction of twenty first century technologies and
stock trading opportunities have created an increasingly volatile stock marketdue to the usage of the
internet for day trading.
Background
From 1990 to 2010 several factors contributed to the volatility of stock trading. The housing booms
of the late 1980 s, late 1990 s and early 2000 s demonstrated that an inelasticity in housing supply
coupled with a large increase in technologies and securities stock trading creates an unstable market
which results in a housing bubble collapse (Calabria, 2011, p. 556). Second, the introduction of the
internet resulted in 24 hour trading opportunities with open to open pricing often reflecting much
more volatile price deviation than close to close pricing, which had remained a neutral

Improving Quality Of Cameras On Mobile Devices Essay
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Purpose of Plan
With the increasing quality of cameras on mobile devices, imaging document pages as an
alternative to scanning is becoming more feasible. However, camera captured document images
may suffer from degradations arising from the image acquisition process. In the presence of such
distortions, the ability to automatically assess the quality of captured images is also becoming
increasingly desirable.
In this project, our aim is to exhibit a detailed study of the types and sources of document image
degradations and then review the techniques for document image degradation. At the end, we
discuss some measures and conduct experiments that are used to characterize document image
quality.
1.2 Background Information
Optical character recognition (OCR) is the process of converting the text of a document image into
a format that can be easily edited by a computer. It is widely used as a form of data entry from
printed paper data records, whether passport documents, invoices, bank statement, receipts, business
card, mail, or other documents. There are many commercial OCR systems available, however, most
of the time, poor quality printed documents yield low recognition rates when submitted to them.
It is the most common method of converting printed texts into digital form so that it can be
electronically edited, searched, stored more easily, and used in machine processes such as machine
translation, text to speech, key data and text mining. OCR is a

Hans Use Of Political And Social Themes
Hans Haacke has been characterized as among some of the most revolutionary and controversial
contemporary and conceptual artists of all time. Haacke s works are generally simply constructed
yet exquisitely permeated with depth and importance through his integration of social, political, and
environmental issues in his pieces that give them a voice they would otherwise lack. In the
following essay, we will seek to understand just how Hans Haackes use of political and social
themes causes his work to resonate with audiences on the scale it has done. When gazing upon
the vast expanse of art history, it becomes evident that the greatest and most influentially
revolutionary individuals are not those that dabble in the popular and well studied styles of old.
Those who are great flee from average and explore uncharted new territories. The individuals that
choose to really set themselves apart from the rest of art culture are those who branch out in
totally new directions. Those who delve into new ideas and new ways of expressing themselves
through mediums and styles few have trodden upon. Hans Haacke has cemented himself in history
as one of these influential and revolutionary individuals. His pioneering work of a conceptual
nature was unparalleled and unmatched by his competitors at its conception. Hans Haacke was
born August 12, 1936 in the little town of Cologne, Germany. Before he started formal education,

As Capitman et al. (n.d.) illustrates with cancer disparities in racial/ethnic groups, induvial and
cultural factors influence how individuals participate in disease prevention and self care
activities. Other factors include availability of health care professionals, mal distribution of
health care resources, and accessibility to social services (Capitman et al. n.d.). Looking at social
and physical environments in general can tell you a lot about how big a difference we see in
health disparities in both urban and rural areas. As noted by Unite for Sight, urban environments
tend to be more highly diverse socioeconomic status with more exposure to health related risk
(chronic diseases) while rural dwellers are more significantly poorer and poor health behaviors
(smoking etc.). Furthermore, rural areas have a higher proportion of uninsured and individually
insured residents with limited access to health care facilities. In urban areas even if with high
prevalence of individuals without health insurance or citizenship they deal with a system where
individuals have access to preventive and routine health care while the other portion of the
populations utilize safety net emergency room care (as cited Unite for Sight n.d.). In general, we

Descriptive Essay About A Football Team
It is gameday. I arrive at the school at the usual time of a quarter till five. I grab my bag of things
I need for the night and I make my walk from the parking lot into the locker room. I get inside of
the locker room and I see all of the familiar faces that I have grown accustomed to seeing nearly
every day for a couple of hours. I am so close to all of these guys on the football team. We are all
so similar. Coach Carpenter comes out and conducts are usual ritual of our pregame walk
through. When that was over I was able to see how different we actually are when getting ready
for the games. I look to my right and see guys on their phones, texting their girlfriends about
plans for the weekend and not even thinking about the playing time that they don t have. I look
to my left and I see the outcasts of the team. Some keeping to themselves in their own little
world, others trying their best to fit into the groups of people around the place. You can hear the
sounds of the laughter coming from straight ahead. The ornery group of friends on the team are
usually up to no good, messing around to pass time before we take the field. Behind me I know
are the underclassman, all dreaming of their days of making it under the lights and living the
dreams they have had since they were young. Outside the doors of our locker room is a small area
that guys enjoy tossing the football around or wait for our team trainer to tape them up. You have

Castro Rise To Power
Many people welcomed Castro into their country with a relief that someone was finally going to
save them from their previous dictator but they were wrong. Not knowing what the result was
going to be they adored him from saving cubans from the corrupt dictator that U.S. backed up.
Castro turned out to be their most corrupt dictator they ever had. Cubans believed that Castro
was going to be a lifesaver from Batista but they were all wrong. Castro ended up being the total
opposite. At first Castro did support his people by providing some education by providing tutors
and teachers to teach the people that didn t have much to read and write. This campaign was very
successful. The literacy rate was at 60% and rose to 96%. He had programs that Castro converted
Cubainto a communist state which left it with many problems.
Throughout the time when Soviet Union and United States were in an argument about having

Yom Kipur Analysis
Jews and prayer for Yom Kippur, 1940 Warsaw
The main motive of this photograph is essentially a global history of the Jewish people. It is very
specific, sad and instructive. In order to properly clarify this picture, we have to start from the
beginning, shed light on the history of the Jewish people, and pay particular attention to the dark
times during the Holocaust, and particularly refer to the Jewish understanding of the holiday. Jewish
history tells us about how the Jewish people lived from the time when they appeared up to the
present day. The nation is like a big family, and a large family can be compared to a tree. This is
the way that the Jewish people formed. It exists for more than three thousand years. They used to

History Of Managed Care And Health Maintenance Organizations
Those of us who have served in the Military a very familiar with managed care, we may not
totally understand the concept of managed cared but are recipients of it daily. Unless there is a
heated political debate about health care reform we usually don t worry about health care
reform. Health care cost is not something that we worry about; after all the government takes
care of all our medical needs, even when we are seen out on the economy. The only time we
might the troubles of health cost might visit our door steps occur when family members decided
to see an out of network provider, we are them held accountable for paying medical bills. What I

Organizations (HMOs). Additional, we ll take a look at how managed came about, and the future of
managed care and health care reform in the U.S.
What is managed care and where did it come from? According to Medicaid. Gov, managed care
is a health care delivery system organized to managed cost, utilization, and quality
(Medicaid.gov, 2014). The begins of managed care can be dated back to 1910, consumers paid
$.50 a month for medical care. During this time there weren t checks and balances nor were there

Seeking not to impose dominant morals and values, but rather [A]s Bourdieu argues, divisions such

elements act to further stratifying by creating class divisions separating conditions of existence and

The Influence Of Political Socialization
Growing up, our views on politics and the government were always one sided because of the
fact, that we didn t understand much about any political situation but just hear what our parents
or family members had to say and agree with it. As we got older we started to develop and
interest for politics and become more active in it as it will later shape our futures. This process,
in which we form ideas about politics is what we call, political socialization. Given a quiz before
hand, we were tested on out political socialization to be shown what our views lean towards. Our
group was tested to see where they thought they stood on a scale labeling us to either be more
liberal or more conservative. Later during the quiz, we were given specific questions that would
place place us on a two dimensional ideology diagram to see where we actually stood from
answering the questions truthfully. Our group will compare and contrast each other s personal
results from taking the quiz and also talk about the publics placement. Knowing that we all live a
different life growing up, we will always have our own experiences and develop new ideas and
views towards our politics and government. With attention to, political socialization is mainly
shaped during our childhood, people continue to shape their political views throughout their lives.
Being that family is the most political influence through our lives we always look to them when we
are confused or questioned amongst politics. For example,

Summary Of The Monsorri Method By Montessori
In The Montessori Method, Maria Montessori proposes that teachers should teach according to
what they have learned about the student. This method can be applied by careful observation of the
way in which children pursue their own learning (573). Montessori s argument is that students can
only retain knowledge to their fullest capacity when teachers choose to teach directly to the
students as individuals instead of as a whole. Not every student is the same because all students
have different life experiences and life struggles. For this reason, Montessori questions why
educational information is taught to all students the same way. Instead, students should have the
opportunity to express their personality while teachers work towards developing engaging material
that matches each child s learning style, but this adaptation in teaching can only occur if the
educationsystem allows the students and teachers more freedom in educational course.
Students should not be repressed in the spontaneous expression of their personality because this
limits their learning aptitudes. Montessori uses a metaphor about butterflies being pinned down to
be observed by students in order to symbolize children being pinned in their seats in the classroom;
the intention of this metaphor is to explain the effect of immobility of the child and his or her
repression (573). Butterflies being pinned is mentioned many times in Montessori s article, but one
of the best demonstrations is when

Finally, personal influence concerning future professional practice was discussed.
Literature Review
Limitations
Due to a variety of factors, former and current foster care youth are confronted with a range of
challenges and limitations. The literature on these challenges and limitations agrees, young adults
aging out of foster care face more barriers to success than peers who were not involved in the
welfare system (Lee, Courtney, Harachi, Tajima, 2015; Gomez, Ryan, Norton, Jones, GalГ
Ўn
Cisneros, 2015; Olson, Scherer, Cohen, 2017; Rebbe, Nurius, Ahrens, Courtney, 2017). Among the
challenges include learned helplessness, lack of confidence in transitioning to adulthood, low self
esteem, poor decision making skills, and increased likelihood to be involved with the criminal
justice system (Lee et al., 2015; Gomez et al., 2015; Olson et al., 2017; Rebbe et al., 2017).
Qualitative data from studies conducted by Gomez et al. (2015) and Olson et al. (2017), found

plagued by a disease that turns humans into vampires. This infection has ended with Neville alone
in a house to fend and survive, in an undisclosed area of Los Angeles. It is mentioned several
times through the novella that bombs could have caused the mutation of a disease and constant
sandstorms attribute to the spreading of the infection throughout the areas of Los Angeles. In
order to fend off the blood sucking vampires, Neville sets up perimeters of garlic, and mirrors to
repel the vampires getting closer to his house. Additionally, Neville installs lights and boards his

Persuasive Speech On Veg Food
Vegetarians have a limited choice when it comes to food, but they are satisfied with it and enjoy
it thoroughly; the moment you take a vegetarian friend to a restaurant and eat non veg, you know
how the reaction would be, LOL. But today, what we are going to discuss is capable of giving
vegetarians a heart attack. How often have you visited a VEG RESTAURANT and ordered
manchow soup or naan or a saladand thought that you are having vegetarian food?
What if you were told that some foods you are having regularly are not even Vegetarian?
Shocked? Yes, this is true. Have a look at the list of veg foods that are actually non veg.
1. Manchow soup
I am sure you all must be relishing manchow soup, isn t it? When we go to restaurants we get it in
2 options, vegetarian and non vegetarian. How would you react if we say that the veg version is
not pure veg? Let us tell you that some Manchow soups contain fish sauce i.e. Tom Yum Sauce.
This doesn t mean that all restaurants do so; some of them serve you pure veg too; but it s better to

End SNAP Fraud
An alternative solution to end SNAP fraud is to provide the low income population with
resources. An essential resources that would help diminish poverty is creating job programs.
Many people need the assistance starting with job applications. Most applications are submitted
electronically which can become a barrier for some. It is important to acknowledge and provide
assistance to people who are not familiar with computers. For example, there could be workshops
in the library to help people fill out job applications. It would be beneficial to find jobs that
correspond to the abilities of each individual. Another barrier some parents face is expensive child

The Scientific Field Of Psychology
The minds of men have never been a terribly cogent or consistent place, rather one that primarily
oscillates between sense and nonsense (Jung). This, of course, begs the question as to why are we,
as human beings, are the way we are; what makes us tick? Most people have probably asked this
question at one point or another, there are those of us today who have dedicated their entire lives to
answering this question. Humanity s answer to this conundrum is the scientific field of Psychology,
the study of the human mind and its functions. Psychology can be traced back to as far as 428 B.C.
stemming from the Ancient Greeks (Plato), but at this time it was more philosophic thought than a
field of science; it did not become a legitimate scientific field until the early 1800s. Before the
1800s, even after its founding to an extent, it was not fully accepted to be science; other scholars
thought the study of the human mind and its mechanisms to be too abstract a field to be
considered anything but philosophy. As biology developed and neurology emerged psychology
gained the support it needed to given credence by other scholars and fields of science. Moving
farther ahead in the history of psychology, what we would today largely recognize as practices
contemporary did not come about until even later point on the psychology timeline. Furthermore,
contemporary psychology is dramatically different from modern day psychology, this is a science
that has grown and evolved dramatically even

The Cure For A Mid Life Crisis Essay

Wind Therapy: The Cure for a Mid Life Crisis
The late humorist, Erma Bombeck (1927 1996) once said, Children make your life important. I
wonder if, when Ms. Bombeck made this claim, she had young children still at home. When my
children were young, they needed much more of my time, which created in me a feeling of
importance; however, as my children became adults, they needed less of my time. When they
were young, my home was always busy and noisy, and I loved it. As the kids grew up, began
working, became more independent, and eventually started moving out, I was left with extra time
on my hands. With fewer people in a home, there were certainly fewer dishes to wash and less
laundry to run. A few years ago, when this transition began, less of my time was spent cleaning,
cooking, and rearing children. With more free time, I had a tendency to worry, and I felt lonely and
sort of stuck in the house. I noticed my anxiety levels creeping up. I looked forward to weekends
when my husband would be home with me and I had someone to socialize with. Enter my mid
life crisis! What does one do to combat the effect of a mid life crisis? One does something
reckless, of course. My recklessness took the form of riding motorcycles. When I decided to take
up motorcycle riding, my initial thought was that I could save money on fuel for daily errands I
might run, and I also thought it would be pretty cool to be a biker

Characters In The Movie Groundhog Day Vs. Happy Death Day
Groundhog Day vs. Happy Death Day Groundhog Day is a 1993 movie starring Bill Murray. It is a
Drama/Romance directed by Harold Ramis rated PG. Groundhog Day was so popular it was
even made into a musical in 2016 composed by Tim Minchin. Happy Death Day, however, is a
2017 mystery/thriller. It is rated PG 13 and is directed by Christopher B. Landon. Although Happy
Death Day is assumed to be just a scary version of Groundhog Day, these two movies have more
differences and similarities in characters, situations, and setting than people might think. The main
character of both movies begin the storyline as self centered people. They are rude and have no
concern for the people around them. The main character from Happy Death Day, Tree Gelbman is
a blonde sorority sister in college. In the beginning of the movie, Tree wakes up, hungover, after
getting drunk from a party the previous night which makes her late to a lecture. This indicates that
she is irresponsible and what most people consider to be the average partying college student. The
main character in Groundhog Day, Phil Connors, is a weatherman who thinks he s above everyone
else. In the movie this character uses sarcasm, irony, and does his best to ignore everyone and
live a life of solitude. One thing these two characters have in common is falling for the people
that they thought they never would in the beginning. Tree falls for Carter Davis, the college
student whose dorm she woke up in after the party. Phil Connors falls in love with Rita Hanson, a
news producer who works in the same studio as him. These Two characters are stuck in incredibly
similar situations with very slight differences. They are both trapped in a time loopthat shows some
sort of relevance in their lives and they have to do figure out what they need do in order to move
on to the next day. In the beginning they simply think it s deja vu, but after they realize they will
always wake up to the same day, even if they die, they begin to enjoy immortality and use it to
their advantage. In her time loop, Tree Gelbman wakes up to the sound of university bells in
another college student s (Carter Davis s) dorm room after a party. She walks back to her sorority
house,

Laser Surgery Research Paper
A Few Things To Know About Having Laser Surgery On Your Cataracts
If you have cataracts, you may be able to put up with cloudy vision for a few years, but
eventually, you ll probably need surgery to remove the cataracts and improve your vision. That s
because cataracts continue to grow and your vision gets progressively worse over the years. At
some point, your vision may become so impaired you have difficulty driving at night, or you may
increase your risk of falling. Cataract surgery is very common and it is a relatively safe procedure.
It is even being done with lasers now, which lowers the risks further. Here are a few things to
know about having your cataracts removed with a laser.
No Incisions By Hand

Laser surgery is no different. Of course, if you want to have laser surgery, you need to make sure
the doctor you choose has necessary laser device, computer, and software system in the office,
because many doctors still do the procedure by hand. If you have cataracts in both eyes, you ll
probably only have one eye done at a time since your vision may be blurry for a few days. Your
eyes will be dilated and numbed with medication before the doctor begins, and you ll probably go
home with an eye patch.
During the surgery, your doctor may be able to insert a new lens that corrects any vision
problems you have such as being farsighted or nearsighted. Then, once you ve healed from your
surgery, the cloudiness will be gone and your vision might be improved enough to allow you to
go without glasses. Deciding on the right time to have the laser surgery depends on different
variables. If your cataracts grow slowly, you may be able to put off the surgery for a long time.
However, it isn t worth postponing the procedure if your vision is impaired to the point where it
affects your quality of

Marge Piercy s The Pampered Life Of Artifice
The Pampered Life of a Bonsai What if beer was never invented? What would fraternities take
pride in? What would they do in place of a keg stand? What would be the drink of choice for
white dads across America? A world where my dad can be seen drinking a girly drink while
admiring the freshly cut lawn is a humorous yet alarming possibility. This nightmarish thought
would be reality without women. Research lead by historian Jane Peyton, supports the idea that
women s specialty for millenniums was brewing beer. Although women are more to society than
the keepers of the art of brewing, this is one startling difference that women have made on society.
Women are capable of working hard, specializing in areas of expertise and intellectually competent.
Marge Piercy would agree that women hold great potential, if not hindered by the harmful effects of
misogyny and the patriarchal tendencies of society. Although to the untrained eye, A Work of
Artifice may appear to be simply about bonsai trees, the poem actually uses an extended metaphor

Piercy uses precise language which highlights the destructive nature of misogyny, but a gardener
carefully pruned it (bonsai tree), she uses a euphemism to describe the cutting of branches. Pruning
is a process that involves the careful trimming of a plant for aesthetic purposes. The choice of
euphemisms emphasize the ignorance of the gardener who believes his actions promote prosperity,
although his efforts only stunt growth and damage the bonsai tree. The gardener also whittles back
the branches, which is another way that he damages the tree. Similarly, the women involved with
the extended metaphor are handicapped by misogynists. Whittling happens to be another fancy
word for harming, cutting, or debilitating a plant. The unintentional harm of the bonsai tree
compares to the ignorance of misogynists and the harm they impose on

Wildlife Conservation As A Career For Wildlife Conservation
Wildlife Conservation is the practice of protecting wild plant and animal species and their
habitats. Wildlife plays an important role in balancing the environment and provides stability to
different natural processes of nature. One of the ways to participate in wildlife conservation is by
being a Wildlife Officer, also known as a Fish and Game Warden. Wildlife
Officers enforce hunting
and fishing regulations and help protect fish and game populations to keep them at healthy levels.
They also help carry out wildlife managementprograms and conduct research by inventorying
animals and their habitats. The work of Wildlife Officers help protect and preserve wildlife for
future generations and maintain the earth s ecosystem. I want to be a part of this career and
enjoy the things most people don t ever get to. Knowing my interest in this career field, I did an
interview with a previous Wildlife Officer in Arkansas. My interviewee was Todd Calloway, a
retired Wildlife Officer who worked for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission for 32 years.
He started working for AGFC on April 1, 1984 and retired on June 30, 2016. His interest in
pursuing this career started at a very young age when his father/grandfather introduced him to the
great outdoors through hunting and fishing. They taught him to respect the outdoor resources that
Arkansas had to offer and that s when he sent a goal to be a part of the AGFC. He got a degree in
criminal justice and when he became a Wildlife Officer, he

Article Review of A Livelihoods Analysis of the Water...
The source that I have chosen to discuss is A livelihoods analysis of the water taxi operators in
the Grenadines , by A. Cooke, R. Mahon and P. McConney. The article appeared in CERMES
Technical Report No. 9, and was published in 2007. The following is an excerpt from this source:
ORIGINAL SOURCE: The major daily operating costs relate to the gasoline and oil consumed
for the water taxi operation. The cost of preparing food for customers when requested is
incurred by some operators. Few operators could give an accurate account of how much they
spend. Many could however estimate the cost of gasoline and oil for daily operation and in
some cases for a trip to the Tobago Cays (Appendix 6). According to one operator from
Carriacou, his boat which is 6.5 m long uses up to 75 litres of gas per day costing up to
US$60.00 along with the four bottles of oil which cost US$5.00/bottle Many operators do not
have insurance for their boats: liability or boat loss. This is due to the difficulty in getting
insurance for wooden boats. Two operators do however have their boats insured. One is among
the largest boats which has passed the inspections of the Grenada Port Authority. The premium is
US $5000.00 each year. In addition he is required to pay XCD$275.00 in tax each year on his
operation. These costs along with the other operation, maintenance and repair costs are proving to
be burdensome given the low recent tourist arrivals in Carriacou. This paragraph discusses the

Who Is Rick Blaine In Casablanca Screening Report of Casablanca In Michael Curtiz s film, Casablanca , the character Richard Blaine has an internal conflict that reflects the feelings of the refugees in Cuba. He also exhibits the power of love. Richard Blaine is a saloon owner in Casablanca. He is very cynical in his actions. Rick is also very uninterested by anyone of his guests in the saloon. He seems detached from his surroundings even though he is worshipped by the customers. Rick likes to remain alone and mysteries and will not have drinks with any companions. His actions and character may stem from emotional distress from his past. Richard seems as though if he is waiting for someone or something to return to him in Casablanca. Refugees in Casablanca are waiting for an escape to America. They are somewhat prisoners of Casablanca. This idea of confinement is shown throughout the film when many people are trading massive amounts of currency or themselves for passes to Lisbon.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She shows up quite abruptly in the saloon, only to run into Richard. However, she is not alone. Isla is accompanied by her husband, Victor Laszlo. As the film portrays the meeting of Isla, Victor, and Richard, you can see that there is in fact tension between Isla and Rick. Richard appears visibly affected by the meeting. This is a turning point in the film. Richard s longing for his long lost love has finally came to an end. He now has a chance to see, touch, and interactive with a past figment of his imagination. This emotional event causes Richard to become heavily intoxicated to mask the effects Isla has on him. This can be compared to the crime that happens in Casablanca by the refugees. The refugees are good, honest people; however, they are faced with a loss of hope, making these refugees act out in to criminal activities to achieve their goals of leaving communist command. • 3. Theories Of Resilience 2.1. What is resilience? The word resilience is derived from the Latin word resilire which translates as to bounce back , it can be described as a dynamic process, encompassing positive adaptation within the context of significant adversity (Luthar, Cicchetti, Becker, 2000). In cases where children have experienced trauma or are living in high stress environments, resilience has been defined as the capacity to adapt and thrive despite challenging and threatening circumstances (Masten, 2001). Resilience is not something some children have a lot of , it is something that develops as a result of complex transactions between the child and their environment (Sroufe, 1997). It is perceived as a crucial element in maintaining and promoting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Key to promoting children s resilience is therefore, a greater understanding of these protective factors that enable some children to be resilient (The Mental Health Foundation, 1999). There is evidence to suggest that it is easier to change a younger child s behaviour than it is to change the behaviour of an older child, indicating why early intervention is crucial (Smith, 2002). Considering the ecology of human development framework theorized by Bronfenbrenner (1979) in relation to resilience displays that interventions at multiple levels need to take place concurrently (Edwards et al, ... People do have a big effect on the problem within the city because they are so careless and do not think of the effects that their actions have on the environment. The 1900s led to the start of dealing with the contaminated drinking water throughout the city. The first step was constructing five filtration plants and using chlorine to treat the water. The Sewage system treatment plants in Philadelphia were constructed in 1950 to 1966 this consisted of the three plants to the right. The government regulations and funding are what determine the technologies and methods that we develop to treat and manage our water systems. Today we have for the most part dealt with the problem of contaminated water, but we still face some problems with bacteria. This especially affects the vulnerable part of our population like pregnant women and children and make them sick. This is a problem that runs city wide and if it does not get the attention that it needs we could see some very dire effects. Philadelphia over the years has improved its methods of cleaning up the water with the development of technology along with the knowledge gained from past experiences. Project Quality Management CHAPTER 8 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Q1.Discuss some of the examples of poor quality in information technology projects presented in the What Went Wrong? section. Could most of these problems have been avoided? Why do you think there are so many examples of poor quality in information technology projects? Answer: Many of these problems could be avoided by performing better quality management. • 6. General Demand Function Of Desktop Computers The general demand function represents the relationship between the demand of a product or service and the following six factors: the price of the product or service, the consumers income, price of related goods or services, the taste patterns of consumers, expected price of the good in some future period and number of the consumers in the market (Thomas Maurice, 2012, pp. 40). This general demand function can be applied to all products and services to forecast the quantity that will be demanded based on the current market trends. The remainder of this paper will apply this general demand function to desktop computers and how the various factors affect the product demand. The first factor to analyze is the price of desktop computers. Like all goods and services in the market, the price and the quantity demanded are inversely related as described in the law of demand. If the price of desktop computers rises, the demand will decrease. Similarly, if the price of desktop computers falls, the demand will rise. Consumers often watch for prices to drop or sales to occur before making big purchases to. Due to the inverse relationship between the demand and the price of the computers, the slope parameter would have a negative sign. This negative sign denotes that as one piece of the equation changes, the other will move in the opposite direction. The second factor of the general demand function is the consumers income. Desktop computers are considered a normal good, or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Papilary Thyroid Cancer Introduction: There has been much research done on thyroid cancer. The thyroid gland is located below the Adam s apple in one s neck. In order for a thyroid gland to be considered normal, the patient should not be experiencing any symptoms that would be the result of having too much or too little thyroidhormones being produced by the gland. The thyroid gland has a butterfly shape, which contains 2 lobes right and left with a narrow gap, or isthmus, in the middle connecting these two lobes1. (Figure 1). Figure 1 | An overview of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland has 2 main types of cells. This type is characterized by slow growth, and a low mortality rate. This carcinoma develops in only one lobe, and responds well to treatment. The downside to this type of cancer is that its most common metastatic site is the lymph nodes in the neck. Activating mutations of the tyrosine receptor kinases RET and NTRK, and of the intracellular signaling effectors RAS and BRAF are present in a mutually exclusive fashion in more than 70% of cases of this type of cancer1. Medullary thyroid carcinoma: This type of thyroid cancer occurs in about 4% of the population, develops from the C cells of the thyroid gland1. The most concerning aspect of this cancer is the fact that by the time it is diagnosed, it has spread to lymph nodes, lungs, liver, or the bones1. Medullary thyroid cancers (MTC) cause the patient s body to release too much calcitonin and a protein called carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) into the blood1. MTC also does not absorb radioactive iodine that would be helpful in its treatment and to see if it had metastasized. The prognosis is much worse for this type of cancer than the previously discussed differentiated types. The two types of MTC are Sporadic MTC, which only impacts one thyroid lobe through a somatic mutation and is not inherited, and Familial MTC, which is an inherited cancer that is caused by a germ line mutation1. In addition, these patients usually have cancer in several areas of both ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Tornado Recovery Summary This summary will cover the lessons learned and any suggestions necessary concerning the following disaster. On May 22, 2011 a tornado spawned east of the Missouri Kansas state line from a massive supercell thunderstorm that quickly escalated into an EF 5 monster. This monster tornado tore a half mile to three quarter mile wide path of total destruction through Joplin, Missouri claiming 161 lives (Smith Sutter, 2013). The response by the local and state government was immediate bringing in a combination of public and private sector efforts. Joplin is one of the few disasters that displayed how recovery efforts should be executed. Public sectors after the disaster focused mainly on clearing debris and bringing the community back into normalcy, while the private sector... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One key factor that helped in the timely recovery of Joplin was the massive volunteer sector efforts. There were more than 92,000 registered volunteers that came from the United States and as far away as Japan to help restore the community (Smith Sutter, 2013). To house all of these volunteers FEMA provided temporary housing units for the volunteers and displaced victims. Immediately after the tornado, the American Red Cross set up shelters for the displaced victims and within two weeks of the disaster they also had a long term recovery committee functioning. Along with the tremendous response from public, private, and volunteer sectors the social media network contributed a huge role in coordinating relief. Most notably the local churches of St. Paul and College Heights utilized Facebook to contact churches outside of Joplin bringing in faith based organizations from all over the United States (Smith Sutter, 2013). A dynasty is simply defined as a succession of rulers from the same family. The ancient Egyptian dynasty was present from about 3100 to 332 BC. It was ruled in the Arab Republic of Egypt. Ancient dynastic China, which lasted from about 1000 BC to 500 AD, lay in the Yellow River Valley. It can be seen that both of these societies shared quite a few cultural similarities. For example, in Egypt, as well as China, polytheism was a dominant religious belief. Also, they were both primarily well developed in technology and tools. There were many professions and jobs offered to women at the time. It also should be noted that the range of jobs that were available for them were based on social class rather than gender. On top of working within the home, attending to household chores and caring for their children, the lower class women of the ancient Egyptian society also had the duty of working outside tending livestock and in the fields, especially during harvest. Occupations such as skilled weavers, mourners, musicians, stewards, composers, singers, dancers, beer brewers, and bakers were also accessible to women of any social class. Educated or wealthy women were offered professional positions such as administrators, priestesses, or supervisors. In some instances, they became judges, overseers, governors, doctors, or even prime ministers because of their ability to read and write. If a woman held the same job as a man, she received the same income and rations as a man received for the work, and so her wages made an important contribution to the family s wealth. Unlike the Egyptian women s broad range of career options, the average Chinese women s work centered primarily on the home. Tasks such as preparing food, cleaning and looking after children were the norm for the majority of women in ancient China. They were expected to have many children and most women felt the pressure to bear a son. It was common for women to take up manual labour in the home. Spinning, weaving and sewing were common occupations. Some peasant women worked in the fields with their husbands. As per the dominant religion of the time, Confucian, women were inferior to men. Men and women were not equal in Confucius s eyes. The only real job in which the ancient Chinese women had was to bear ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Comparing Media Images Of Criminological Research Essay iii.Comparing Media Images to Criminological Research The superhero genre is so popular and influential that many studies have been done on its depictions of the groups and the impact it has on a large part of society how it has become a staple on film, television, and in video games (Darowski). The genre is so influential in fact, that it dates back all the way to the Ancient Greeks, and possibly even further (Haynes). Every group in history has had their mythologies and epic tales of crime fighters, they just did not call them superheroes. For example, Achilles only had one weakness (his heel) and was by the Greeks definition, considered a hero (greek gods.org). The same goes for heroes like Perseus, Theseus, and even Heracles. Back then though instead of being changed into a super soldier in a lab by a German scientist or creating a flying metal suit in the desert, these heroes were part god which explained their extra ordinary abilities. Super crime fighters have always existed, but when comic books began in the 19th century a new set of rules was created to guide their content to be more appropriate than the Greek tales (Coville). The Comics Code was a list of regulations regarding the depiction of certain events in comic books maintained by the Comics Magazine Association of America (Nyberg). The code was very strict and eventually challenged by Stan Lee (one of the creators of Marvel) through a story arc in the Spiderman Comics that dealt with drug abuse. ... In the first stanza, questioning from what direction the tapping came, he throws open the door, the narrators nemesis not to be found. Critique on Kingdom Education Essay Critique on Kingdom Education Summary Kingdom education is a process that begins with a child accepting Christ as their Lord and Savior and continues with the goal of that child reaching maturity in Christ. As such, evangelism and discipleship are part of a kingdom education that will train children to know God and have a biblical worldview. This worldview is taught through Biblestories, but is also incorporated into every subject and into educational methods that reflect a biblical philosophy. In Kingdom education, these three cords must work in harmony to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kingdom education has two purposes. The first is universal and involves the call of God upon each child to accept him as Lord and Savior. The second is personal and involves training each child to obey God s individual call to serve him throughout their earthly life. Schools prepare students to obey God in this world and to stand before God for eternity. (2006, p. 168). A detrimental philosophical element that exists in society today is dualism. Dualism is the belief that life, and truth, can be divided into the secular and the spiritual. Some truth and reality is secular, and some is spiritual. This compartmental view of life causes spiritual truth to be seen as less accurate and real than scientific fact, and considers God relevant in a religious context, but irrelevant to most of life. Christians must view all truth as God s truth, and see everything from this supernatural perspective. Personal Response Education plus God equals success. While this statement is true, the job of incorporating the truth about God into everything taught is becoming increasingly more difficult. Schultz charted public education s view of reality, truth and value throughout the history of the United States to show how an unbiblical worldview has increasingly taken hold of society, the educational system and ... Also, the country has also observed a profound increase in the trading of technologies stock (Sabherwal, Sarkar, and Zhang, 2011, p. 1210). In addition, the development of day trading has taken control of nearly half of the stock trading industry (Chou, Wang, and Wang, 2014, p. 403). As a result, the traditional methods of company share value evaluation no longer provide an accurate estimate of company value (Rosenblatt and Gawronski, 2004, p. 118). The introduction of twenty first century technologies and stock trading opportunities have created an increasingly volatile stock marketdue to the usage of the internet for day trading. Background From 1990 to 2010 several factors contributed to the volatility of stock trading. The housing booms of the late 1980 s, late 1990 s and early 2000 s demonstrated that an inelasticity in housing supply coupled with a large increase in technologies and securities stock trading creates an unstable market which results in a housing bubble collapse (Calabria, 2011, p. 556). Second, the introduction of the internet resulted in 24 hour trading opportunities with open to open pricing often reflecting much more volatile price deviation than close to close pricing, which had remained a neutral ... Improving Quality Of Cameras On Mobile Devices Essay INTRODUCTION 1.1 Purpose of Plan With the increasing quality of cameras on mobile devices, imaging document pages as an alternative to scanning is becoming more feasible. However, camera captured document images may suffer from degradations arising from the image acquisition process. In the presence of such distortions, the ability to automatically assess the quality of captured images is also becoming increasingly desirable. In this project, our aim is to exhibit a detailed study of the types and sources of document image degradations and then review the techniques for document image degradation. At the end, we discuss some measures and conduct experiments that are used to characterize document image quality. 1.2 Background Information Optical character recognition (OCR) is the process of converting the text of a document image into a format that can be easily edited by a computer. It is widely used as a form of data entry from printed paper data records, whether passport documents, invoices, bank statement, receipts, business card, mail, or other documents. There are many commercial OCR systems available, however, most of the time, poor quality printed documents yield low recognition rates when submitted to them. It is the most common method of converting printed texts into digital form so that it can be electronically edited, searched, stored more easily, and used in machine processes such as machine translation, text to speech, key data and text mining. • 31. Hans Use Of Political And Social Themes Hans Haacke has been characterized as among some of the most revolutionary and controversial contemporary and conceptual artists of all time. Haacke s works are generally simply constructed yet exquisitely permeated with depth and importance through his integration of social, political, and environmental issues in his pieces that give them a voice they would otherwise lack. In the following essay, we will seek to understand just how Hans Haackes use of political and social themes causes his work to resonate with audiences on the scale it has done. When gazing upon the vast expanse of art history, it becomes evident that the greatest and most influentially revolutionary individuals are not those that dabble in the popular and well studied styles of old. Those who are great flee from average and explore uncharted new territories. The individuals that choose to really set themselves apart from the rest of art culture are those who branch out in totally new directions. Those who delve into new ideas and new ways of expressing themselves through mediums and styles few have trodden upon. Hans Haacke has cemented himself in history as one of these influential and revolutionary individuals. His pioneering work of a conceptual nature was unparalleled and unmatched by his competitors at its conception. Hans Haacke was born August 12, 1936 in the little town of Cologne, Germany. Other factors include availability of health care professionals, mal distribution of health care resources, and accessibility to social services (Capitman et al. n.d.). Looking at social and physical environments in general can tell you a lot about how big a difference we see in health disparities in both urban and rural areas. As noted by Unite for Sight, urban environments tend to be more highly diverse socioeconomic status with more exposure to health related risk (chronic diseases) while rural dwellers are more significantly poorer and poor health behaviors (smoking etc.). Furthermore, rural areas have a higher proportion of uninsured and individually insured residents with limited access to health care facilities. In urban areas even if with high prevalence of individuals without health insurance or citizenship they deal with a system where individuals have access to preventive and routine health care while the other portion of the populations utilize safety net emergency room care (as cited Unite for Sight n.d.). • 41. Summary Of The Monsorri Method By Montessori In The Montessori Method, Maria Montessori proposes that teachers should teach according to what they have learned about the student. This method can be applied by careful observation of the way in which children pursue their own learning (573). Montessori s argument is that students can only retain knowledge to their fullest capacity when teachers choose to teach directly to the students as individuals instead of as a whole. Not every student is the same because all students have different life experiences and life struggles. For this reason, Montessori questions why educational information is taught to all students the same way. Instead, students should have the opportunity to express their personality while teachers work towards developing engaging material that matches each child s learning style, but this adaptation in teaching can only occur if the educationsystem allows the students and teachers more freedom in educational course. Students should not be repressed in the spontaneous expression of their personality because this limits their learning aptitudes. Montessori uses a metaphor about butterflies being pinned down to be observed by students in order to symbolize children being pinned in their seats in the classroom; the intention of this metaphor is to explain the effect of immobility of the child and his or her repression (573). Butterflies being pinned is mentioned many times in Montessori s article, but one of the best demonstrations is when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This, of course, begs the question as to why are we, as human beings, are the way we are; what makes us tick? Most people have probably asked this question at one point or another, there are those of us today who have dedicated their entire lives to answering this question. Humanity s answer to this conundrum is the scientific field of Psychology, the study of the human mind and its functions. Psychology can be traced back to as far as 428 B.C. stemming from the Ancient Greeks (Plato), but at this time it was more philosophic thought than a field of science; it did not become a legitimate scientific field until the early 1800s. Before the 1800s, even after its founding to an extent, it was not fully accepted to be science; other scholars thought the study of the human mind and its mechanisms to be too abstract a field to be considered anything but philosophy. As biology developed and neurology emerged psychology gained the support it needed to given credence by other scholars and fields of science. The Cure For A Mid Life Crisis Essay Kimberley Accomando Sarah Griffin English 101 6 October 2016 Wind Therapy: The Cure for a Mid Life Crisis The late humorist, Erma Bombeck (1927 1996) once said, Children make your life important. I wonder if, when Ms. Bombeck made this claim, she had young children still at home. When my children were young, they needed much more of my time, which created in me a feeling of importance; however, as my children became adults, they needed less of my time. When they were young, my home was always busy and noisy, and I loved it. As the kids grew up, began working, became more independent, and eventually started moving out, I was left with extra time on my hands. With fewer people in a home, there were certainly fewer dishes to wash and less laundry to run. A few years ago, when this transition began, less of my time was spent cleaning, cooking, and rearing children. With more free time, I had a tendency to worry, and I felt lonely and sort of stuck in the house. I noticed my anxiety levels creeping up. I looked forward to weekends when my husband would be home with me and I had someone to socialize with. Enter my mid life crisis! What does one do to combat the effect of a mid life crisis? Happy Death Day, however, is a 2017 mystery/thriller. It is rated PG 13 and is directed by Christopher B. Landon. Although Happy Death Day is assumed to be just a scary version of Groundhog Day, these two movies have more differences and similarities in characters, situations, and setting than people might think. The main character of both movies begin the storyline as self centered people. They are rude and have no concern for the people around them. The main character from Happy Death Day, Tree Gelbman is a blonde sorority sister in college. In the beginning of the movie, Tree wakes up, hungover, after getting drunk from a party the previous night which makes her late to a lecture. This indicates that she is irresponsible and what most people consider to be the average partying college student. The main character in Groundhog Day, Phil Connors, is a weatherman who thinks he s above everyone else. In the movie this character uses sarcasm, irony, and does his best to ignore everyone and live a life of solitude. One thing these two characters have in common is falling for the people that they thought they never would in the beginning. Tree falls for Carter Davis, the college student whose dorm she woke up in after the party. Phil Connors falls in love with Rita Hanson, a news producer who works in the same studio as him. That s because cataracts continue to grow and your vision gets progressively worse over the years. At some point, your vision may become so impaired you have difficulty driving at night, or you may increase your risk of falling. Laser surgery is no different. Of course, if you want to have laser surgery, you need to make sure the doctor you choose has necessary laser device, computer, and software system in the office, because many doctors still do the procedure by hand. If you have cataracts in both eyes, you ll probably only have one eye done at a time since your vision may be blurry for a few days. Your eyes will be dilated and numbed with medication before the doctor begins, and you ll probably go home with an eye patch. During the surgery, your doctor may be able to insert a new lens that corrects any vision problems you have such as being farsighted or nearsighted. Then, once you ve healed from your surgery, the cloudiness will be gone and your vision might be improved enough to allow you to go without glasses. Deciding on the right time to have the laser surgery depends on different variables. If your cataracts grow slowly, you may be able to put off the surgery for a long time. However, it isn t worth postponing the procedure if your vision is impaired to the point where it affects your quality of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 53. Marge Piercy s The Pampered Life Of Artifice The Pampered Life of a Bonsai What if beer was never invented? What would fraternities take pride in? What would they do in place of a keg stand? What would be the drink of choice for white dads across America? A world where my dad can be seen drinking a girly drink while admiring the freshly cut lawn is a humorous yet alarming possibility. This nightmarish thought would be reality without women. Research lead by historian Jane Peyton, supports the idea that women s specialty for millenniums was brewing beer. Although women are more to society than the keepers of the art of brewing, this is one startling difference that women have made on society. Women are capable of working hard, specializing in areas of expertise and intellectually competent. Marge Piercy would agree that women hold great potential, if not hindered by the harmful effects of misogyny and the patriarchal tendencies of society. Although to the untrained eye, A Work of Artifice may appear to be simply about bonsai trees, the poem actually uses an extended metaphor to emphasize... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Piercy uses precise language which highlights the destructive nature of misogyny, but a gardener carefully pruned it (bonsai tree), she uses a euphemism to describe the cutting of branches. Pruning is a process that involves the careful trimming of a plant for aesthetic purposes. The choice of euphemisms emphasize the ignorance of the gardener who believes his actions promote prosperity, although his efforts only stunt growth and damage the bonsai tree. The gardener also whittles back the branches, which is another way that he damages the tree. Similarly, the women involved with the extended metaphor are handicapped by misogynists. Whittling happens to be another fancy word for harming, cutting, or debilitating a plant. The unintentional harm of the bonsai tree compares to the ignorance of misogynists and the harm they impose on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 54. Wildlife Conservation As A Career For Wildlife Conservation Wildlife Conservation is the practice of protecting wild plant and animal species and their habitats. Wildlife plays an important role in balancing the environment and provides stability to different natural processes of nature. One of the ways to participate in wildlife conservation is by being a Wildlife Officer, also known as a Fish and Game Warden. Wildlife Officers enforce hunting and fishing regulations and help protect fish and game populations to keep them at healthy levels. They also help carry out wildlife managementprograms and conduct research by inventorying animals and their habitats. The work of Wildlife Officers help protect and preserve wildlife for future generations and maintain the earth s ecosystem. I want to be a part of this career and enjoy the things most people don t ever get to. Knowing my interest in this career field, I did an interview with a previous Wildlife Officer in Arkansas. My interviewee was Todd Calloway, a retired Wildlife Officer who worked for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission for 32 years. He started working for AGFC on April 1, 1984 and retired on June 30, 2016. His interest in pursuing this career started at a very young age when his father/grandfather introduced him to the great outdoors through hunting and fishing. They taught him to respect the outdoor resources that Arkansas had to offer and that s when he sent a goal to be a part of the AGFC. He got a degree in criminal justice and when he became a Wildlife Officer, he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 55. Article Review of A Livelihoods Analysis of the Water... The source that I have chosen to discuss is A livelihoods analysis of the water taxi operators in the Grenadines , by A. Cooke, R. Mahon and P. McConney. The article appeared in CERMES Technical Report No. 9, and was published in 2007. The following is an excerpt from this source: ORIGINAL SOURCE: The major daily operating costs relate to the gasoline and oil consumed for the water taxi operation. The cost of preparing food for customers when requested is incurred by some operators. Few operators could give an accurate account of how much they spend. Many could however estimate the cost of gasoline and oil for daily operation and in some cases for a trip to the Tobago Cays (Appendix 6). According to one operator from Carriacou, his boat which is 6.5 m long uses up to 75 litres of gas per day costing up to US$60.00 along with the four bottles of oil which cost US$5.00/bottle Many operators do not have insurance for their boats: liability or boat loss. This is due to the difficulty in getting insurance for wooden boats. Two operators do however have their boats insured. One is among the largest boats which has passed the inspections of the Grenada Port Authority. The premium is US $5000.00 each year. In addition he is required to pay XCD$275.00 in tax each year on his operation. These costs along with the other operation, maintenance and repair costs are proving to be burdensome given the low recent tourist arrivals in Carriacou. This paragraph discusses the ...
