UMI Personal Statement
UMI has it all: spirit, action, academics, athletics and social lives. That is what makes UMichigan
so grrrreat (Think Tony the Tiger, speaking of Michigan)!
For a native New Yorker, UMI represents the best of the big Rah! Rah! Sis Boom Bah! schools
where sports are king, and everyone is the epitome of a study hard, well fed Midwesterner, Rock
of Gibraltar ethics, corn pone loving, weekend rabble rouser. A Chinese friend of mine claims
he went directly from a St. Paul s graduation in New Hampshire to Ann Arbor to acclimate
himself in preparation for his greatest year on earth. Personally, I think he just wanted to
experience Michigan s lake life for that summer and see if he could establish a solid social circle

Although I do not know what the future holds, I am steadfast in planning on it being at UMI.
Amongst hundreds of reasons UMI is appealing, its involvement in fostering intellectual and
cultural growth in recognition of the importance of globality (not a word, but it should be) makes it
my first choice college. As a member of the proud first generation Americans crowd, I know the
value of diversity, especially in education.
I am constantly envisioning improvements, multiple uses, and/or innovations regardless of the
subject at hand; as such I want to have meaningful experiences that will help me identify a
productive way for me to spend my life. Targeting classes that develop a depth of finance, business,
and social sciences knowledge, I plan to be a ready candidate to join an international team to make a
difference in the world. After spending the next four years with a diverse group of global
companions, I know we will strengthen our critical thinking and communication skills, broadening
our understanding of the mathematics and the humanities in our efforts to recognize opportunities,
envision imaginative improvements, multiple uses, and innovations as we strive to economically,

The Waterfall Approach For Software Development Projects
The waterfall approach to software development projects is a linear model, which focuses on
individual stages of development including, requirement identification, analysis, design, coding,
testing and operations. While this model has been around for decades, there are many drawbacks.
This method heavily focuses on extensive documentation and front loaded requirements gathering;
thus inviting the opportunity for significant and costly failures. As the landscape of information
technology in the business world has evolved, we have seen a major shift from complex back end
systems that didn t include input from stakeholders and only programmers could understand, to
computer programs that are customized to the front end users and other... Show more content on

This method utilizes smaller cross functional groups of people that work together on complex
issues in a creative self organized team environment. These teams should be comprised of all the
right people needed to complete assignments and can include business analysts, developers, testers
and the end users. Collaboration, teamwork and change are embraced rather than focusing on
processes, extensive documentation and sticking to a precise plan. Incremental phases under agile
allow for changes and product releases are delivered after each iteration. The most common agile
method is scrum, in which a relatively small group of dedicated resources are solely responsible
for every aspect of the work and are self sufficient. Additional popular agile methods include rapid
application development, lean software development, Kanban, extreme programming and
scrumban. In the agile manifesto, developed in 2001, some of the key principles are to deliver
frequent improvements that add value, to welcome change that adds competitive advantage, to
continually work together through motivated individuals and focus on simplicity and maximizing
the amount of work not done. Article Analysis In the article, The Waterfall That Won t Go Away,1
Chatterjee describes how the waterfall method is still heavily relied upon in businesses and how it
will continue to remain an approach to software development projects. Specifically, Chatterjee, a
software developer, was

Insider Connoisseur Failure
To investigate an incident is, technically, to follow an approved methodology in collecting
evidence, analyzing the causes and contributing factors, and, finally, to configure a consistent and
the most plausible conclusion within the four main areas: Act of God, inadequate design, poor
management, operator failure. Without fail, from those conclusions and subsequent
recommendations, it unfolds, for the sake of good order (to save necks and seats), the resolute
demand for new codes, rule amendments, or revised standards all still subject to an inherent
direction for deliberation and conceding. In the marine field, however, when the disaster happens,
the insider connoisseur, in a very private sense, can identify the areas in the shipping industry

Hollywood s Life Saver Essay
Hollywood s Life Saver
For years Hollywood has been the land of stars and cinema; a place where dreams are made, and all
of life seems perfect. However, the glitz and glamour of Hollywood has often masked some of
Hollywood s biggest stars alcoholism and drug problems. The string of never ending parties, and the
increasing amount of drugs that are being used on club circuits, frequented by many of Hollywood s
elite, became all too familiar for two of Hollywood s young rising stars, Drew Barrymore and the
late River Phoenix.
Drew Barrymore began drinking at the age of nine, and by the age of thirteen, was in the ASAP

Intervention is a process that helps the chemically dependent person and family to receive the help
they need. (ASAP Family Treatment Center)
There are a variety of types of treatment facilities in the United States for chemical dependents.
However, there are two main categories of programs offered at these facilities. There are the in
patient programs, and there are the out patient programs. Drew Barrymore was enrolled in ASAP s
in patient program. ASAP describes the type of in patient program they offer like this:
ASAP offers in patient treatment for chemically dependent adolescents and adults, which emphasize
treatment of the entire family. Our In patient program provides a secure drug free environment
which includes family, group, and individual therapy as well as peer counseling and integration into

In the in patient programs patients live in a facility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They go to

Symbols of the Hopi Pottery Essay
Symbols of the Hopi Pottery
When most people look at a piece of pottery the first thing that comes to mind is the significance
of the symbols and the stories behind these symbols. There are some symbols of Hopi pottery that
have stories behind them and some that are symbols of either lost significance or the story is
unknown. Some of the symbols we think of as symbols, are really the potters own design. Most
people make the mistake that symbols and designs are the same thing, but in fact they are very
different. Hopi potters, mostly women, have been instrumental in both preserving and developing
traditional symbols and innovating designs in response to changes in and challenges to their culture.
In the beginning, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The potter does not look at the design or shape of piece of pottery until the complete piece is
finished. Once the pot is finished, the potter looks at it and if there is something wrong with it,
such as it is lop sided or the design is corked, he/she takes it as a learning experience , and will
know what not to do the next time ( Museum Notes 3).
If on the other hand, he/she has not decided on a design he/she may take the pot in his/her hands
and close his/her eyes and imagine a design that would fit the pot which would be attractive on
the piece. A very famous potter, Maria Martinez creates all of her pottery by first closing her
eyes with the piece in her hands and then imagining what would look good on this piece and what
will fit perfectly. Another artist, Carol Duwyenie, states My creations in art revolve around
symbolism in the relationship to life and Hopi Philosophy of the earth. Just like the paths of life
change, twist, and turn, so has my work. I have taken different paths to express my creativity....
(Duwyenie 1). Everyone has there own way of deciding what to place on their art. As mentioned
above, some artists know right from the start what the design will be , but some do not and some
use both strategies depending on the piece.
There are several strategies to keep the pot flawless. The most common strategy is to border the
area to be designed with several lines to keep it from becoming slated or lopsided. The area is first

Geography Is Destiny Dbq
There is a saying that Geography is destiny . For early civilizations, geography was an obstacle
when it came to survival. As people settled in permanent locations, they relied on the local
geographical features to sustain themselves. As people relied on geography, it helped shape the
development of early civilizations, such as to provide many natural barriers, trade routes, and fertile
land. China, for example, was able to develop and prosper due to its natural barriers. Based on
document six, China is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean (to the west), the Himalayan Mountains (to
the southwest), and the Gobi Desert (up north). These natural barriers helped stop foreigners from
invading China, thus helping the civilizationdevelop. Furthermore,

The Causes Of World War I
World War I was also known as the First World War or the Great War. It was an international
conflict from 1914 1918 that involved most of the countries in Europe, the United States, the
Middle East, Russia, and others (World War I). World War I had some major events like the sinking
of the Lusitania, The First Battle of Marne, and The Russian Revolution.
In 1900 the British Empire was spread over five continents, and France had control of large
amounts of Africa. This created a fight between them and Germany for land. Between the empires,
militarism, and nationalism there was so much competition that it created a war. Militarism was a
major cause of World War I. The governments had given the military so much power that
Germany, France, and Britain were in a major race to have the best military that could claim and
protect the seas around their country. Nationalism was also a huge cause of World War I because
everyone believed their country was best, which led to people fighting over whose country was
better (Crocker).
World War I started after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28, 1914, and
lasted until 1918. The assassination of Franz Ferdinand was blamed on the Serbian government. In
early July the Serbian government was convinced that Austria Hungary was ready for war so the
Serbians ordered their Army to mobilize. On July 5, 1914, Austria Hungary got a secret alliance
from Germany. On July 28, 1914, Austria Hungary declared war on Serbia. Throughout

Social Structure And Hierarchy At The Gym
For the deviance assignment I decided to break the social norms that are prevalent in the gym
while working out. Cal Poly has a very active campus that uses the gym very regularly. The gym
has its own set of rules and norms that are followed by everyone. I personally do not spend a lot
of time in the gym so to prepare I watched 30 minutes of YouTube videos and read multiple lists
of unwritten gym rules and things not to do at the gym. The social structure and hierarchy at the
gym is different than real life. The gym social structure is based on how much muscle the person
has and for how long the person has been lifting. Therefore, I was at the bottom due to the fact
that I am rail thin and do not work out regularly. As someone at the bottom of the social order I
was for the most part ignored, similar to how one ignores the poor and homeless. The only way
to get a reaction out of people was to act out and disturb the social order. No one offered to help
me and spend time with me to improve out of the goodness of his or her heart, most people stick
to themselves. The only way to be noticed is to act out, similar to how poor people and homeless
act out to get attention because they do not know any other way. The only person to talk to me
and tell me that I was messing around was a male in his 30 s who was very muscular and was a
workout regular. He, in the social structure, is much higher and the advice is similar to a teacher
speaking down to a student. He told me that

Change in Psychology towards Suicides
Right to die, euthanasia, suicide and abortion of a child all involve legal and psychological
questions of and issues relating to death. Certain legal issues on them are settled, some are going
on and some others are still uncertain. Right to die held not a part of right life under the
Constitution almost two decades ago. Euthanasia has clothed with legal protection to some extent
a few years ago. In the case of aborting a child, which is an instance of putting an end to one s life
to save another or otherwise, has come again to the mainstream of discussion in these days. The

government to take appropriate measures to rehabilitate them and to prevent the recurrence of it. It
shows that greater attention is being given to psychological aspects of these kind of issues.
Although, the anti suicidal provision has not been done away with, the current development needs

Essay on Airplanes and Aerodynamics
Aerodynamics is generally summarized in these 2 terms: Lift against Weight and Thrust against
Drag . This basically means the amount of flight power generated must be equal to, or greater than
the amount of weight of the airplane, and the amount of pushing generated, must be equal to or
greater than the airs resistance. But the overall question, so far, is how is Liftand Thrust generated?
The answer to how Thrust is generated is quite simple. Its sort of how a car would move, except
in a much different way. Airplanes have 4 engines, which can each exert easily up to 200 PSI of
air (pressureper square inch), composed of liquid fuel cylinders, and internal combustion (like a
car). It also tops to 250 km per hour on the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pressure is the amount of molecules getting squeezed and impacted by energy. So more pressure
will squeeze and compress more of these air molecules, obviously making them all slow (the
amount of compression the molecules experience is the energy the amount of molecules that
experienced this compression is the pressure!!!) So less pressure is proven to increase the speed
(fans, in this case actually DECREASE the pressure on the air by cutting it with their blades). Also
consider that Bernoulli s principle is fonder with fluids but it also supports aerodynamics. When air
flows over the top of the wing, the curve stretches out the molecules and breaks the atmospheric
pressure, which was compressing those molecules together. That is how air over the wing is
faster. So take into perspective that the compressed air molecules in the bottom make up a
sturdy road, and the stretched out and spaced out air molecules on top simply, make up a freely
flowing flow of air. And according to the power of thrust it is moving along this road with no
powerful force impacting above that s your airplane flying straight forward for sure, but how
does the airplane climb? There are 2 different basic control moves for a plane. The first is pitch,
and the second is roll or yawn. When the nose points upwards the plane climbs, and when it points
downwards the plane descends. That s the pitch. So when our plane tilts its nose upwards the
sturdy road of pressurized air molecules tilts

U.s. Government During The Cold War
Tensions during the Cold War sparked many changes in American legislation, altering the way
many lived their lives. One of the most obvious areas of change is in education, with the fear of
Soviet dominance causing transformations across the nation. The severe adjustment of government
education changed the way students learned, the information taught in the classroom, and the
overall view of educationin the eyes of the public in a positive way.
Government Changes:
Summary:
Changes instigated by the U.S. government during the Cold War had a profound effect on the
educational landscape, as they altered how people viewed education, who had access to education,
what they were taught, how they were taught, etc. Although many changes were done on the local
and state level, the most considerable effects are seen after changes were made on the national
scale, in legislations such as the National Defense Education Act of 1958, and in government bodies
such as the Department of Education.
G.I. Bills(1944 1984):
The original G.I. Bill was signed into law in 1944, under the name Serviceman s Readjustment Act.
After WWI, millions of veterans returned home, only to face massive unemployment and a
recession. After WWII, twice as many veterans would return to similar issues if nothing was done.
With the chance of another recession looming, legislators created the Serviceman s Readjustment
Act. The act, which became known as the G.I. Bill, provided $500(about $6,757 today) to veterans

Administrative Law is the by-product of constitutional law
INTRODUCTION Administrative law is the most growing phenomenon in the field of state
welfare for today . It has become very necessary in the developed society as the relationship
between the administrative authority and the people have become very complex . In order to

A constitution provides a framework of principles that creates the structure and purpose of a human
organisation. A constitution is the result of historical events and personalities . Constitutional law
thus, means that part of Law which relates to the system of government of a country. It can also be
defined as those laws which regulate the structure of the principal organs of government and their
relationship with each other and with the citizen and it also determine their main functions.
Constitutional law actually forms the backbone of public law . It is that branch of public law which
determines the nature of the state, nature and structures of the government its powers, functions,
division of powers among different constitutional organs, their relationship to each other and above
all the relationship between the state and the individuals . Constitutional law makes it possible for
us to act collectively by coordinating the interest of many individuals. It also protects individuals
against abuses by those to whom we entrust power it being a sad feature of human nature that those
who seek power may be unfit to exercise it. Constitutional law concerns a struggle between rival
contenders for power, the constantly changing relationship between the different governmental
institutions and limits imposed on the government. So we can see from the above discussion that

From the Ground Up
The coffee shop where I wait for Karen is loud and busy. I sit and take notice of the people
around me. The shop is filled with young and old people alike, and I notice the differences
between these two generations. The younger crowd sits at almost silent tables everyone s eyes on
the screens in front of them. The older crowd sit and talk. Faceto face with friends at their table and
even with strangers at other tables, by eavesdropping and then inserting themselves into the
conversation. While some of the younger people find this behavior rude, I find it oddly charming.
When Karen comes in, I immediately recognize her bright smile. Karen is an older womanwith

from her experience. Karen explains to me that she got her first bit of experience from her mother,
who taught her how to balance a checkbook and write checks. Karen learned this at an early age,
because her mother wanted to teach her about the practical things in life. Another Lesson that

The Mailroom Plot Summary
The stories in David Rensin s book, The Mailroom: Hollywood History From the Bottom Up, are
exciting, intriguing and perfectly suited for reality television. The book, which is comprised of
interviews with over 200 mailroom graduates from some of the biggest Hollywood talent agencies,
reveals the not so glamorous lives of mailroom assistants in the most glamorous industry in the
world (Rensin). These mailroom clerks are young, motivated, and competitive individuals who
aspire to be Hollywood agents making millions. Such driven and aggressive people would make for
excellent reality stars. Due to the combination of businessoriented tasks and out of office drama,
The Mailroom is the result of The Apprentice meeting Vanderpump Rules.
Although the clerks are in competition to get promoted, there is much more that goes on beyond
the mailroom. This series is not structured as a competition show because this would limit the story
from capturing the drama outside the office, which includes blossoming friendships, romance, and
conflict between strong personalities. In particular, the love lives of the mailroom clerks are
somewhat incestuous, according to Nir Caspi, a packaging agent at United Talent Agency, which
would intrigue viewers of shows like The Hills and Vanderpump Rules. Therefore, unlike The

A Transition Of Fascination And Fear Essay
Introduction A Transition of Fascination to Fear Historically change has been vital in the
emergence of American higher education. John Thelin (2011) expresses The single most change in
American higher education at the end of the 19th century was that college going became
fashionable and prestigious (p. 156). Prior to WWII, the public romanticized college going as a
means to promote social mobility. Throughout the evolution of higher education, individuals views
transitioned from fascination to fear. A sense of fear was instilled in students as they became aware
colleges were not exempt from violence. The transition inspired legislation of the Clery Act, which
puts practices into place to create safe communities. Has regulation of the Clery Act benefited
student populations? Do higher education institutions exclude certain populations by complying
with the act? Throughout this paper, I will address these questions and critically analyze the Clery
Acts significance within higher education.
The History and Amendments to the Clery Act Before enactment of the Campus SecurityAct, there
had been a multitude of particularly violent crimes on college campuses, which threatened the
security higher education institutions assured (101st United States Congress, 1990). Due to this
fact, congress proposed a disclosure of campus security policy and campus crime. Both public and
private institutions that received federal funds were required to prepare and distribute annual

Moreover, televisionand radio have replaced newspapers as the dominant source of information.

Reflecting on the past can lead to many questions and different feelings in the present. In The
Mesmerizer by Mark Twain, Twain confesses the truth behind an event that happened in his teen
years. When Twain confesses the truth to his mother thirty five years later, she does not believe
him. Instead, she believes the lies that were fed to her as she watched her son be hypnotized by
Simmons, the Mesmerizer. This leads to the question, Who is to blame? By reflecting on Twains
past, the Mesmerizer, Twain, and the people are all to blame by partaking in the deception of
others. Simmons, The Mesmerizer, is to blame for conning the people and exploiting the... Show

The people are guilty for taking pleasure in the pain of others and for being gullible. Twain notes
that when the mesmerizer called up the audience to stick pins in Hicks and Twain, the ladies and
gentlemen always complied eagerly (Twain, 3). The people were happy to inflict pain into the
arms of the subject. Being grown adults they should have realized, although Hicks and Twain
seemed to be hypnotized, that there was still going to be consequences to sticking the pins in. The
pin would leave holes in the arms and pain would occur after the hypnotism was over. Rather than
thinking about the consequences of purposefully sticking pins into someone s body, they took
pleasure in inflicting pain. In reality, even though Twain and Simmons were the ones conning the
people, there really wouldn t be a show if the audience wasn t gullible enough to believe in

Critique of Geoffrey Canada s Fist Stick Knife Gun Essay
Critique of Geoffrey Canada s Fist Stick Knife Gun
The Book Fist Stick Knife Gun by Geoffrey Canada is a biographical account of his childhood in
the south Bronx. He and his 4 brothers were raised by only their mother. She would survive on no
more than ten dollars a week. He moved several times as a child until finally landing on union
avenue, the place were many of his life lessons were learned and at times applied. He learned
about the ranking process of kids on union Ave. and how the only way to improve your status was
to use your fists to fight your way up the chain. Looking back Geoffrey Canada notices the major
shift in attitudes concerning the rules of the streets. What once was harmless fist fighting has now

The next was Stick . Their wasn t much mention of this phase in his life, but he does mention the
fact that in certain circumstances, a broken bottle or a stick can be used in self defense when the
opponent uses a weapon. The place where this would happen is at school. The rules of the streets
still applied but the problem was many different gangs associated and congregated at his junior
high. So everyone their follows different rules, some gangs might think the use of weapons is
acceptable, so Union Ave. people have to adjust these circumstances and use a stick or a broken
bottle to defend themselves.
As he grew even older he began to notice other gangs tendencies of carrying knives. He realized
that this fact changed the code of conduct. No longer would be a good fist fighter keep you from
confrontation. Even the most unskilled fighter could win a fight and be on top if they knew
how to swing a blade. One day Geoffrey lucked out, because he found an old rusted up knife in
the gutter. It was his pride and joy. He could never afford one, so he went to many lengths to get
it in working condition again. Once he returned it to its original shine, he perfected his techniques
of swinging it. The gun gave him a new sense of protection. He walked with a sense of certainty
that if anyone were to mess with him, they would be sorry. One day however, he realized the
realities of what a knife could

Throughout the line of church history, Oneness doctrine has suffered persecution,

Many opposed this event by turning to Monasticism, these people wanted to devote their lives to
God, but despite of all of this Weisser notes that Oneness still exist.
Chapter 6
This chapter explains the events taking place in the eighth through fifthteenth centuries (middle
Ages). It is when secular leaders are struggling against the papacy for power. During this time the
crusades took place. The main problem in the middle Ages was between the pope and the king, this
desire for power caused the churches from the East and West to separate. This made the Cathari and
Waldenses to question the authority of the pope and placed Biblical authority over men.
Chapter 7
In chapter seven Weisser takes a deep look into the Reformation, and how the printing of pamphlets
in mass number can cause a greater influence than before. The Catholic Church had become very
corrupt and caused men like Martin Luther and John Calvin to push against the church abuse. These
men had different views, but for the most part they agreed. We also see the Oneness of God
doctrine in the sixth and seventeenth centuries. This was inspired by Michael Servetus and once
again the challenge of this pagan doctrine (Trinitarians) would last for two centuries.
Chapter 8
In this chapter Weisser explains how the Enlightenment period disagreed with the Reformation, this
caused separation within the Christian church. This period also brought the

* The runtime for the binary search isn t found
Suppose an algorithm that processes a data set of size 8 has a runtime of 72. The same algorithm
has a runtime of 110 when applied to a data set of size 10; and when applied to a data set of size 20,
it has a runtime of 420. Using big O notation, state the runtime for this algorithm for the general

Suppose you develop an algorithm that processes the first element of an array (length of n), then

The Pros And Cons Of Government Shutdown
Two years ago, in 2013, the government was shut down due to disagreement between the two
parties in Congress. There may be another closure. On September 9 at 7 A.M., The Washington
Post published an article stating the possibility of government shutdown on October 1, 2015.
Congress is way behind on passing spending bills that would allow funding for the government; the
problem lies within the disagreement about spending and where cuts should be made: it also stems
from both parties trying to push their ideology into the agenda. All the disagreement prolongs the
process for these bills to be passed. The deadline for the bills to be passed is September 30. If the
government doesn t receive the funding, then the government will be shutdown.When... Show more

A government shutdown would ultimately bring everything to a standstill. When to political
parties on a specific topic, it takes twice as long to come to terms since they cannot agree on
what to cut and how much. The politics dictate what gets passed and when., and it is crucial to
ensure the bill for government spending is passed on time. Government funding isn t something
that should be taken lightly. Without a bill passed to fund the government, all the agencies will
not be able to function and support the general public. The primary people whose job are at stake
are the federal workers, therefore leaving those people unemployed. Another pitfall of government
shutdown is that each day that the government is inoperable the national deficit worsens. It costs
money to shut down a government. The FDA and the EPA which help regulates businesses that
portect the people from harm in their food as well as envrioemtn, can be put on hold as well,
allowing no food inspections which can affect public health.Loans from the goernemnt will be on

Those women needed only to become better adjusted to who and what they were. Friedan,
however, was no ordinary housewife. Before starting her family, she had worked as a newspaper
reporter; even after her children came, she wrote regularly for the major women s magazines.
By 1957 she was fed up with the endless stories about breast feeding, the preparation of gourmet
chip dips, and similar domestic fare that was the staple of Redbook , McCall s , and Ladies
Home Journal . She had noticed many women like herself who worked outside the home and felt
guilty because their jobs threatened their husbands roles as providers or took time away from
their children. Thus Friedan began to wonder not only about herself as a woman, a wife, and a
mother, but also about the role society had shaped women to play. The results of the Smith
questionnaire engaged Friedan s reportorial instincts. She sensed she was onto a story bigger than
anything she had ever written. But when she circulated an article describing the plight so many
women were experiencing, the male editors at the women s magazines turned it down flat. It
couldn t be true, they insisted; women could not possibly feel as guilty or discontented as Friedan
claimed. The problem must be hers. Betty has gone off her rocker, an editor at Redbook told her

Production Credits And Financing Incentives
Investments by large chemical companies are focused on biobased facilities, but production
credits and financing incentives are needed to create U.S. based facilities. After a somewhat
rocky start following the expiration of funding from the 2008 Farm Bill, the biobased products
programs had a good level of support in the 2014 Farm Bill. The administrative regulatory rules
are well developed, particularly for the Biorefinery Assistance program. Previously, this rule was
strictly for advanced biofuels, whereas the current iteration expanded the sector to include
biobased products and renewable chemicals. This has led to the development of a framework for
assessing the biobased economy. However, this framework also requires that we make the
public and private sectors be made aware of the fact that biobased products are not in stand
alone facilities; rather, they are part of a large supply chain that begins with biorefineries. In the
past, if a biorefinery produced anything other than biofuels, it did not qualify for Farm Bill
benefits, but this has changed. The Biomass Crop Assistance Program (BCAP) is an extremely
important part of the Farm Bill. For members of the farming community to grow cellulosic, non
food crops, they need assurance that they can make money by doing so. Some biomass crops
require a planting lead time of 1 to 5 years, and this program now provides an assured market with
mandatory funding. The BCAP is also an emerging program. Cellulosic

Precursors to Loss of Control Accidents and possible synergies with new NextGen airspace
To establish the basis of this research, aircraft loss of control can be considered to encompass flight
abnormal situations outside of the normal operating flight envelopes, characterized by non linear
effects and by the inability to maintain heading, altitude and attitude (Belcastro, Newman, Crider,
Groff, Foster, Klyde and Huston, 2014)
Loss of Control In Flight (LOC I) has consistently been a predominant cause of aviation accidents.
Loss of Control Accidents are highly complex and typically involve the combination of multiple
contributing factors (Belcastro and Jacobson, 2010). Over the last eight years, loss of control
accidents have resulted in more fatalities than any other causal factor in commercial aviation
(ICAO, 2013).
New technologies and stringent regulations have contributed significantly in the reduction of
Commercial Aviation (Part 121) accidents due to loss of control in flight. Several studies have been

In this experiment the gene pool variation consists of 2 sets of alleles the alleles and genes for
the desert iguana and the alleles for the inselberg lizards. They each have a certain set of
genotypes and the different phenotypes. The inselberg lizard has an allele and trait for darker
colored skin and is slightly smaller than the desert iguana(Michael 2012). On the other hand, the
desert iguana has an allele and trait for lighter colored skin and is slightly bigger than the
inselberg lizard(Sloan 2012). When the hybrid population was produced, they were able to
produce an incomplete dominance of the two phenotypes which made the hybrid have a size and
skin tone that was in between the desert iguana and the inselberg lizard. In conclusion the
inselberg lizard and desert iguana came from a species that had the same gene pool, but they
developed certain traits that set them apart, but are still within the same species which explains
why they were able to breed, even though, they had different phenotypes. In order to explain why
the two developed different traits and are still considered to be the same species, the understanding

Santa Claus Ritual
At my house we are preparing to break the spell over one of the first deceptions we perpetrated

Santa is real and expect a real answer from us.
I know I shouldn t feel worried. I know this is a rite of passage most western kids experience. I

myth when it was my turn to do so.

eventually solve. When they discover the inconsistencies we let them ponder them, because a great

Use of Irony in Crime and Punishment and A Doll s House
There are many links between Crime and Punishment, by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and A Doll s House,
by Henrik Isben. Each character goes through many ironic situations. Throughout both of the works
dramatic, situational, and verbal irony are used.
Dramatic irony is used throughout Crime and Punishment. The reader knows that Rodion
Romanovitch Raskolnikov killed the pawnbroker, Alyona Ivanovna, and her sister, Lizaveta
Ivanovna. A quote to support this is,
He took the axe right out, swung it up in both hands, barely conscious of what he was doing, and
almost without effort, almost effort, almost mechanically, brought the butt of it down on the old
woman s head. (Dostoyevsky ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In A Doll s House the reader is aware that Nora borrowed money from Krogstad without her
husband s permission. Nora also forged her father s name to gain the money. She says, You don t
know all. I forged a name. (Isben 44) In the following conversation between Nora and Christine it
is clearly stated that Torvald does not know of Nora s actions: Mrs. Linde. And since then have
you never told your secret to your husband? Nora. Good heavens, no! (Isben 13)
Another example of dramatic irony in A Doll s House is when Nora wants to practice a dance
called the Tarantella. When Torvald goes to look in the letter box Nora says, Torvald please don
t. There is nothing in there. (Isben 46) The reader knows that Nora has not forgotten the dance.
The reader knows this when Torvald goes to check the mail and Nora begins to play the
Tarantella. Nora then says, I can t dance to morrow if I don t practise with you. (Isben 46) The
reader knows that all Nora is trying to do is keep Torvald from reading the mail which contains a
letter from Krogstad.
Situational irony is also used throughout the two works. In Crime and Punishment Raskolnikov is
the one who murdered the two sisters. It was totally unexpected when Nikolai came to

Literature Color Symbolism
The Color of Literature
Color symbolism can be used to set the tone of a story and aspects within that story. Colors can
invoke an emotional response as well as paint a picture of a character or scene within the story. In
exploring the story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (Damrosch, Pike 1200 59) along with
Christopher Columbus letter The Green and Beautiful Land (Columbus 1 7) there are three main
colors that stand out. The first color, as shown in both titles, is green. Green plays a significant
role in both tales as it is the main color of the antagonist in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and
the supple landscape that is described by Columbus. Green also represents negative aspects in the
stories such as misfortune and lack of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Columbus also describes the islands to have marvelous pine groves, and extensive meadow country
(2) which again symbolizes the nature and fertility of the islands. At the end of Columbus letter, he
tells the king and queen that he can send gum mastic, aloe wood, and rhubarb, all of which are
green and represent the fertility of the new lands (5).
Columbus describes the native islanders as wondrous[ly] timid and delighted to receive items of
little or no value from the crewmen (2). It is in this description that the reader imagines the
inexperience of the islanders, a negative often associated with the color green.
The next representation of color is of gold, or yellow. Yellow represents idealism, vitality, and
gold, or wealth as well as cowardice, greed, and deceit ((Rohrer; Smith). The Green Knight s
attire was adorned with color, bright gold on silk broideries banded most richly (1207). The
saddle blanket of both the Green Knight s horse and Sir Gawain s horse was embellished with
gold trim. These detailings of gold represent vitality and wealth. The wealth of Bertilak s castle is
also seen in the description of the lavish surroundings, from the curtains with clear golden hems to
the tapestries hung on ropes with red gold rings (1223). The account of lavish surroundings may
also give the impression of greed as well as wealth.

The Decline In Teen Pregnancy Rates Over the last few decades the rates in teen pregnancy have
been a debate; did they rise over the past few years or did they actually decline? Contrary to some
doctors and politicians the numbers associated with teen pregnancy have decline over the last
couple of years. Although there are still people out there who believe this to be an issue it s
made more of an issue than it actually is. The ads and commercials are set out to scare teen agers
into believing that were at an all time high for this issue, but realistically its actually the exact
opposite. Teen pregnancy rates haven t dropped on there over the course of the years. There are
a few major factors that have contributed a great deal to this change. Those changes include but
are not limited to: more resources being available to these teenagers to prevent themselves from
becoming pregnant, society is more open to talking about this issue as well as the religion and
culture change aspect of families today. Despite the beliefs of others, teen pregnancy rates are at

Chinese Rites Controversy
A Prior Pastoral Experiment: The Chinese Rites Controversy
Christians in later periods adopted different strategies in regard to pre evangelisation ancestors,
taking seriously the cultures which had formed these beliefs: a simplistic rejection of their
worldview was not adopted. As we have seen, reflection of the Descent was one such example.
Another is the Chinese Rites controversy in which Jesuit missionaries to China permitted Chinese
Christians to take part in Confucian rituals relating to their departed ancestors It was not an isolated
phenomenon at that time: connections appear between these developments in China and others in
the Americas (Vogeley 1997). It is also a fine example of how a pastoral situation drove the quest

Christian theologians adapted the Chinese three stages of revelation (Zurcher 1997). The end result
was the virtuous but unbaptised were considered to be saved.
This strategy was suppressed at the time and in the eighteenth century (Koepping 2007, 203 04;
Lo 2003, 30 32), but later vindicated (Shorter 1988, 157 61). Part of the problem was that the
strategy adopted involved participation in the existing Confucian and ancestor rites, and was so
judged idolatrous (Lo 2003, 31; Rule 2009). Thus, to use more recent terminology, they were judged
examples of syncretism rather than inculturation (Bowie 1999, 68 70).
That said, the Chinese Rites strategy, developed for a Confucian context, cannot simply be applied
to other contexts. For one thing, it will import problems. The marriage of Christian theology and
Chinese metaphysics was not straightforward: at one level it appeared to suggest salvation could
be achieved without reference to the incarnation, and demanded un Chinese understandings of
body, spirit and soul be used (Zurcher 1997). On another, Ricci appeared to distort the Confucian
classics in the search for traces of a personal God (Wiest 1997,

Throw-Ins In A Soccer Team
While most soccer teams will have several throw ins throughout the game, many teams spend
almost no time practicing them. If you are a soccer coach and your players are often committing
throw in violations by lifting their feet or failing to bring the ball all the way behind their heads, it
is especially important to practice throw ins. While throw ins may feel like a mundane skill,
practicing them can become a game.
To make practicing throw ins fun, set up cones on the field. Spread the cones out, with some close
to the sidelines and others farther away. Split your players into two teams. Allow a player from one
team to throw the ball in, trying to hit a cone. Then allow a player from the other team to try.
Continue to switch back and forth.

as a country. Canada s various stances when it comes to the Suez Canal, and First and Second Iraq
wars, are excellent examples of the progress Canadahas made within their foreign policy, as they ve
developed as a country over time. Advancing further away from blindly following connected
powers like Britain and the United States, Canada finds its ways to show its uniqueness in the face
of these conflicts. The Suez Canal crisis of 1956 displayed a side of Canada previously unseen by
the world. Prompted by Egypt blocking off the canal, a primary oil transportation... Show more

Without the support of the UN, Britain and the US decided Iraq was not doing as they should and
offered Hussein an ultimatum on March 7 demanding he leave Iraq willingly, or be taken by force.
Looking towards Canada for support they were met with a surprising hostility towards the idea
given their participation in the first Iraq war. Jean Chretien however stated that unless the UN had
come to an agreement no action would be taken by Canada.
Although many believed this to be a controversial decision, Christien was firm in their choice and
stated But we re an independent country, and in fact it was a very good occasion to show our
independence, [2] which he told to The Huffington Post. It was a bold statement of the time, and
although meant with no ill will, there was a fear that it may damage US/ Canada relations forever.
Controversially, the way Canada announced it would not participate in the war caused some rifts as
many deemed it to be unprofessional, as the announcement was made public in Canada before

To What Extent Does the Problem of Urbanization Can Be Met...
To what extent does the problem of urbanization can be met by sustainable development?
For the past decades the trend of urbanization has rapidly increased, especially in developing
countries. Urbanization may be defined as a process in which people from rural areas are
migrating to the city. The sudden increase of the population in cities has brought significant
problems to their inhabitants, the environment and resources. These problems are providing
housing with basic facilities and public transport, mitigating the effect of pollution which is
detrimental to the environment and people, and sustaining its development and resources.
Sustainable development is defined in the Brundtland Report in Our Common Future as

The first housing project was done during 1954 through 1964 it was the partial rehousing of
squatter settlers from Shek Kip whose place was engulfed by fire; this embarked the establishment
of elevated public settlement. The second housing project was done during 1964 through 1973 and
made a large expansion on it at the edge of city area; this started the idea of planning the housing
settlement outside the city. Finally, the housing project that they are currently building in New
Towns in the New Territories; this project was first launch in 1973. This project will temporarily
solve the scarcity in housing for it was only built for the present situation and did not consider the
problem on housing that will arise in the future. Consequently, the government has no organized
plan in addressing the squatting problem for they only act according to the situations and solved it
in short term basis. For example, they only resettle the homeless when their communities was
engulfed by a fire, cleared the areas when it is needed for redevelopment or restricted it when it
will be redeveloped for future use and they only rehouse those squatters who are registered or just
relocate them to impermanent settlement. In addition, the current housing project they are building
has an incorporated problem on transportation for it is located outside the city but most of job
opportunities are still in the city; the success of this housing project is

Production in Nigeria has also increased in cost. This leads to the downfall of industries. The
devaluation of currency is a major plank of World Bank and IMF policies for the development
of the economies of Third World countries. Nigeria s compliance with this demand was allegedly
tied to further rescheduling of Nigeria s external debt and fresh aids. Purchasing power of
citizens would reduce with increases in price level and this would worsen the pervasiveness of
poverty. Speculative activities in the economy will increase as a result of instability. REVIEW OF
RELEVANT LITERATURE There is a vast body of empirical literature on the impacts of
devaluation on output and prices. In many of the existing studies, it has been recognized that the
possible effects of devaluation on output could be contractionary. To this extent, several channels
through which devaluation could be contractionary have been identified. First, Diaz Alejandro
(1965) examined the impacts of devaluation on some macroeconomic variables in Argentina for the
period 1955 61. He observed that devaluation was contractionary for Argentina because it induces a
shift in income distribution towards savers, which in turn depresses consumption and real
absorption. He equally observed that current account improved because of the fall in absorption
relative to output. Cooper (1971) also reviewed twenty four

Lil Mama Research Paper
Niatia Lil Mama Kirkland has had many roles throughout her career. She s a dancer, an actress,
an entertainer and television personality. But many now only know her as a meme, or a played
out joke. Lil Mama s first single, Lip Gloss came out in 2007 and was the game changer for her
becoming career. Lip Gloss had all of the makings of a one hit wonder a catchy beat, a less
catchy dance to accompany it, and an everyday item, lip gloss, as its focal point. Although, her
flow wasn t bad and her dance moves were on point, people didn t quite know what to do with Lil
Mama during her breakout years. She was a teenage girl demanding to be taken seriously in an
industry dominated by adult men, and seemed to be caught in pop culture limbo, not bubbly
enough, but also not quite real enough for us to really care about.... Show more content on

In 2009, while still riding her Lip Gloss popularity, Lil Mama attended the MTV Video Music
Awards, as Jay Z and Alicia Keys performed their infamous song Empire State of Mind, where Lil
Mama made a decision that set her career on a downhill path. BeyoncГ© tried to stop her, but she
pushed her way, uninvited, onto the stage with two of the biggest names in entertainment at the
time. It was awkward, as Jay Z confirmed that it was an unwelcomed attempt to gain attention. It
was also the moment that the public decided that Lil Mama was merely a joke. Too many people
Lil Mama s VMA stunt made her seem as a clueless outsider who was either too cocky or too ill
advised to think that she could share the stage with such huge names in the industry. What makes
things worse is this incident just so happened to correspond with the Internet s shift from tech geeks
exclusively to a mainstream social media commodity and Lil Mama, as the stage crashing third
wheel became the visual foundation of too many jokes; that never

Terrestrial Planets Essay
1.What are the terrestrial planets?
The terrestrial planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. These planets are composed primarily
of silicate rocks with structures consisting of a central metallic core, mostly iron, with a
surrounding silicate mantle.
2.How were Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune formed?
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune were formed by different types of rock and frozen materials
(water, ammonia, and methane). These materials were once planetesmals, which formed from the
rocky, metallic solid materials that were able to survive the collapse of the solar nebula which
formed our solar system.
3.What role do impact craters play on Venus? Which planetis Earth most like? In what ways is this
planet like Earth?
Venus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Specifically, Mercury was once volcanically active, but no longer is. Eighty five percent of
Venus surface is made up of low lying volcanic plains. As we know, Earth has volcanoes. Mars
has two large volcanic systems, with the largest, the Tharsis region, stretching across 8,000
kilometers of the planet. Volcanoes exist due to the buildup of pressure in the outer core. This
forces the molten core up to the surface of a planet, in the form of lava.
4.What are the characteristics of the inner planets? How do these vary from the outer planets?
Inner planets all contain a core, mantle, and crust. These planets are very dense and rocky. In
comparison to outer planets, inner planets are smaller, denser, and rockier.
5.What evidence is there to support that planets exist outside of our Solar System?
The discovery of other stars in early stages of formation support the fact that planets exist outside
of our solar system. These stars, surrounded by disks of gas and dust, are called proplyds.
According to astronomers, these disks are like that which the solar nebula was believed to be
like, providing a good source of evidence of other planets. Extrasolar planets, or planets outside of
our solar system, are believed to have formed from the distortion of the proplyd

The Pensieve And Harry Potter Comparison
The term Poetry is a word derived from the Greek meaning to make or create. Much like the word
sugguests, Poetry is the art of creating literature, which deals with human experiences. To
understand bette what Poetry is, one can use the Pensieve in Harry Potter.
The Pensieve has the appearance of a hollow stone, with runes and symbols carved around it s
opening. Inside the Pensieve is a silver cloud like liqiud/gas which is the physical appearance of
the memories owned by the person who owns the Pensieve. When touching the surface of the
silver memories, the person who touches it gets transported into the memory they touch, therefore
giving that person the ability to view it from a third person point of view. Although the person can
view the memory as if they are there, they can neither change the order of events, nor participate or
influence the memory they are viewing. However, the person is capable of feeling the emotions,
desires or views of the person who owns the memory.
In this analogy, the person supplying the memory would be the Poet, and the person viewing it
would be the reader. In Poems, the Poet uses the four senses to transport the reader into a picture
that he is painting. The reader can feel all the shared emotion that the Poet tries to convey, but not

Lyrical Music, for example is Poetry in daily life. There are not many instances in life music is
not playing. In the grocery store, shopping center, class rooms, at funerals, engagements and
weddings one is surrounded by music. The reason for this is, that it expresses what people fail to
put into words themselves.Just like music uses a melodie to support the lyrics it tries to convey to
the listener, Poets use meter and rhyme to guide the way one reads the poem.It deals with issues

  • 2. UMI Personal Statement UMI has it all: spirit, action, academics, athletics and social lives. That is what makes UMichigan so grrrreat (Think Tony the Tiger, speaking of Michigan)! For a native New Yorker, UMI represents the best of the big Rah! Rah! Sis Boom Bah! schools where sports are king, and everyone is the epitome of a study hard, well fed Midwesterner, Rock of Gibraltar ethics, corn pone loving, weekend rabble rouser. A Chinese friend of mine claims he went directly from a St. Paul s graduation in New Hampshire to Ann Arbor to acclimate himself in preparation for his greatest year on earth. Personally, I think he just wanted to experience Michigan s lake life for that summer and see if he could establish a solid social circle before every one of ... Amongst hundreds of reasons UMI is appealing, its involvement in fostering intellectual and cultural growth in recognition of the importance of globality (not a word, but it should be) makes it my first choice college. As a member of the proud first generation Americans crowd, I know the value of diversity, especially in education. I am constantly envisioning improvements, multiple uses, and/or innovations regardless of the subject at hand; as such I want to have meaningful experiences that will help me identify a productive way for me to spend my life. Targeting classes that develop a depth of finance, business, and social sciences knowledge, I plan to be a ready candidate to join an international team to make a difference in the world. After spending the next four years with a diverse group of global companions, I know we will strengthen our critical thinking and communication skills, broadening our understanding of the mathematics and the humanities in our efforts to recognize opportunities, envision imaginative improvements, multiple uses, and innovations as we strive to economically, environmentally and ... • 3. The Waterfall Approach For Software Development Projects The waterfall approach to software development projects is a linear model, which focuses on individual stages of development including, requirement identification, analysis, design, coding, testing and operations. While this model has been around for decades, there are many drawbacks. This method heavily focuses on extensive documentation and front loaded requirements gathering; thus inviting the opportunity for significant and costly failures. As the landscape of information technology in the business world has evolved, we have seen a major shift from complex back end systems that didn t include input from stakeholders and only programmers could understand, to computer programs that are customized to the front end users and other... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This method utilizes smaller cross functional groups of people that work together on complex issues in a creative self organized team environment. These teams should be comprised of all the right people needed to complete assignments and can include business analysts, developers, testers and the end users. Collaboration, teamwork and change are embraced rather than focusing on processes, extensive documentation and sticking to a precise plan. Incremental phases under agile allow for changes and product releases are delivered after each iteration. The most common agile method is scrum, in which a relatively small group of dedicated resources are solely responsible for every aspect of the work and are self sufficient. Additional popular agile methods include rapid application development, lean software development, Kanban, extreme programming and scrumban. In the agile manifesto, developed in 2001, some of the key principles are to deliver frequent improvements that add value, to welcome change that adds competitive advantage, to continually work together through motivated individuals and focus on simplicity and maximizing the amount of work not done. Symbols of the Hopi Pottery Essay Symbols of the Hopi Pottery When most people look at a piece of pottery the first thing that comes to mind is the significance of the symbols and the stories behind these symbols. There are some symbols of Hopi pottery that have stories behind them and some that are symbols of either lost significance or the story is unknown. Some of the symbols we think of as symbols, are really the potters own design. Most people make the mistake that symbols and designs are the same thing, but in fact they are very different. As people settled in permanent locations, they relied on the local geographical features to sustain themselves. It was an international conflict from 1914 1918 that involved most of the countries in Europe, the United States, the Middle East, Russia, and others (World War I). World War I had some major events like the sinking of the Lusitania, The First Battle of Marne, and The Russian Revolution. In 1900 the British Empire was spread over five continents, and France had control of large amounts of Africa. This created a fight between them and Germany for land. Between the empires, militarism, and nationalism there was so much competition that it created a war. Militarism was a major cause of World War I. The governments had given the military so much power that Germany, France, and Britain were in a major race to have the best military that could claim and protect the seas around their country. Nationalism was also a huge cause of World War I because everyone believed their country was best, which led to people fighting over whose country was better (Crocker). World War I started after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28, 1914, and lasted until 1918. The assassination of Franz Ferdinand was blamed on the Serbian government. In early July the Serbian government was convinced that Austria Hungary was ready for war so the Serbians ordered their Army to mobilize. • 11. Social Structure And Hierarchy At The Gym For the deviance assignment I decided to break the social norms that are prevalent in the gym while working out. Cal Poly has a very active campus that uses the gym very regularly. The gym has its own set of rules and norms that are followed by everyone. I personally do not spend a lot of time in the gym so to prepare I watched 30 minutes of YouTube videos and read multiple lists of unwritten gym rules and things not to do at the gym. The social structure and hierarchy at the gym is different than real life. The gym social structure is based on how much muscle the person has and for how long the person has been lifting. Therefore, I was at the bottom due to the fact that I am rail thin and do not work out regularly. As someone at the bottom of the social order I was for the most part ignored, similar to how one ignores the poor and homeless. The only way to get a reaction out of people was to act out and disturb the social order. No one offered to help me and spend time with me to improve out of the goodness of his or her heart, most people stick to themselves. The only way to be noticed is to act out, similar to how poor people and homeless act out to get attention because they do not know any other way. The only person to talk to me and tell me that I was messing around was a male in his 30 s who was very muscular and was a workout regular. He, in the social structure, is much higher and the advice is similar to a teacher speaking down to a student. He told me that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Essay on Airplanes and Aerodynamics Aerodynamics is generally summarized in these 2 terms: Lift against Weight and Thrust against Drag . This basically means the amount of flight power generated must be equal to, or greater than the amount of weight of the airplane, and the amount of pushing generated, must be equal to or greater than the airs resistance. But the overall question, so far, is how is Liftand Thrust generated? The answer to how Thrust is generated is quite simple. Its sort of how a car would move, except in a much different way. Airplanes have 4 engines, which can each exert easily up to 200 PSI of air (pressureper square inch), composed of liquid fuel cylinders, and internal combustion (like a car). It also tops to 250 km per hour on the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pressure is the amount of molecules getting squeezed and impacted by energy. So more pressure will squeeze and compress more of these air molecules, obviously making them all slow (the amount of compression the molecules experience is the energy the amount of molecules that experienced this compression is the pressure!!!) So less pressure is proven to increase the speed (fans, in this case actually DECREASE the pressure on the air by cutting it with their blades). Also consider that Bernoulli s principle is fonder with fluids but it also supports aerodynamics. When air flows over the top of the wing, the curve stretches out the molecules and breaks the atmospheric pressure, which was compressing those molecules together. That is how air over the wing is faster. So take into perspective that the compressed air molecules in the bottom make up a sturdy road, and the stretched out and spaced out air molecules on top simply, make up a freely flowing flow of air. And according to the power of thrust it is moving along this road with no powerful force impacting above that s your airplane flying straight forward for sure, but how does the airplane climb? There are 2 different basic control moves for a plane. The first is pitch, and the second is roll or yawn. When the nose points upwards the plane climbs, and when it points downwards the plane descends. That s the pitch. So when our plane tilts its nose upwards the sturdy road of pressurized air molecules tilts ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. U.s. Government During The Cold War Tensions during the Cold War sparked many changes in American legislation, altering the way many lived their lives. One of the most obvious areas of change is in education, with the fear of Soviet dominance causing transformations across the nation. The severe adjustment of government education changed the way students learned, the information taught in the classroom, and the overall view of educationin the eyes of the public in a positive way. Government Changes: Summary: Changes instigated by the U.S. government during the Cold War had a profound effect on the educational landscape, as they altered how people viewed education, who had access to education, what they were taught, how they were taught, etc. Although many changes were done on the local and state level, the most considerable effects are seen after changes were made on the national scale, in legislations such as the National Defense Education Act of 1958, and in government bodies such as the Department of Education. G.I. Bills(1944 1984): The original G.I. Bill was signed into law in 1944, under the name Serviceman s Readjustment Act. After WWI, millions of veterans returned home, only to face massive unemployment and a recession. After WWII, twice as many veterans would return to similar issues if nothing was done. With the chance of another recession looming, legislators created the Serviceman s Readjustment Act. The act, which became known as the G.I. Bill, provided $500(about $6,757 today) to veterans ... • 20. A Transition Of Fascination And Fear Essay Introduction A Transition of Fascination to Fear Historically change has been vital in the emergence of American higher education. John Thelin (2011) expresses The single most change in American higher education at the end of the 19th century was that college going became fashionable and prestigious (p. 156). Prior to WWII, the public romanticized college going as a means to promote social mobility. Throughout the evolution of higher education, individuals views transitioned from fascination to fear. A sense of fear was instilled in students as they became aware colleges were not exempt from violence. The transition inspired legislation of the Clery Act, which puts practices into place to create safe communities. Has regulation of the Clery Act benefited student populations? Do higher education institutions exclude certain populations by complying with the act? Throughout this paper, I will address these questions and critically analyze the Clery Acts significance within higher education. The History and Amendments to the Clery Act Before enactment of the Campus SecurityAct, there had been a multitude of particularly violent crimes on college campuses, which threatened the security higher education institutions assured (101st United States Congress, 1990). Due to this fact, congress proposed a disclosure of campus security policy and campus crime. That is why Ray Bradbury, the author of Fahrenheit 451, was right to fear books and other printed sources would be replaced by modern technology. Moreover, televisionand radio have replaced newspapers as the dominant source of information. Many people argue that technologyhas made information from printed sources more available. If society continues to press eBooks and educational television rather than printed books, less fortunate children will have no source of information such as children books. Furthermore, children spend more time watching television rather than reading. A 2007 study published by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reported that the average US household has a television set turned on an average of 8 hours and 11 minutes every single day. Much of that television watching is being done by children (Preface to How Should Television Be Regulated? ). Most children have watched over three school years worth of television. During this time the crusades took place. The main problem in the middle Ages was between the pope and the king, this desire for power caused the churches from the East and West to separate. This made the Cathari and Waldenses to question the authority of the pope and placed Biblical authority over men. The Catholic Church had become very corrupt and caused men like Martin Luther and John Calvin to push against the church abuse. These men had different views, but for the most part they agreed. Before starting her family, she had worked as a newspaper reporter; even after her children came, she wrote regularly for the major women s magazines. By 1957 she was fed up with the endless stories about breast feeding, the preparation of gourmet chip dips, and similar domestic fare that was the staple of Redbook , McCall s , and Ladies Home Journal . She had noticed many women like herself who worked outside the home and felt guilty because their jobs threatened their husbands roles as providers or took time away from their children. Thus Friedan began to wonder not only about herself as a woman, a wife, and a mother, but also about the role society had shaped women to play. The results of the Smith questionnaire engaged Friedan s reportorial instincts. She sensed she was onto a story bigger than anything she had ever written. But when she circulated an article describing the plight so many women were experiencing, the male editors at the women s magazines turned it down flat. Production Credits And Financing Incentives Investments by large chemical companies are focused on biobased facilities, but production credits and financing incentives are needed to create U.S. based facilities. After a somewhat rocky start following the expiration of funding from the 2008 Farm Bill, the biobased products programs had a good level of support in the 2014 Farm Bill. The administrative regulatory rules are well developed, particularly for the Biorefinery Assistance program. Previously, this rule was strictly for advanced biofuels, whereas the current iteration expanded the sector to include biobased products and renewable chemicals. This has led to the development of a framework for assessing the biobased economy. However, this framework also requires that we make the public and private sectors be made aware of the fact that biobased products are not in stand alone facilities; rather, they are part of a large supply chain that begins with biorefineries. In the past, if a biorefinery produced anything other than biofuels, it did not qualify for Farm Bill benefits, but this has changed. The Biomass Crop Assistance Program (BCAP) is an extremely important part of the Farm Bill. For members of the farming community to grow cellulosic, non food crops, they need assurance that they can make money by doing so. Some biomass crops require a planting lead time of 1 to 5 years, and this program now provides an assured market with mandatory funding. The BCAP is also an emerging program. Cellulosic ... This strategy was suppressed at the time and in the eighteenth century (Koepping 2007, 203 04; Lo 2003, 30 32), but later vindicated (Shorter 1988, 157 61). Part of the problem was that the strategy adopted involved participation in the existing Confucian and ancestor rites, and was so judged idolatrous (Lo 2003, 31; Rule 2009). Thus, to use more recent terminology, they were judged examples of syncretism rather than inculturation (Bowie 1999, 68 70). That said, the Chinese Rites strategy, developed for a Confucian context, cannot simply be applied to other contexts. For one thing, it will import problems. The marriage of Christian theology and Chinese metaphysics was not straightforward: at one level it appeared to suggest salvation could be achieved without reference to the incarnation, and demanded un Chinese understandings of body, spirit and soul be used (Zurcher 1997). On another, Ricci appeared to distort the Confucian classics in the search for traces of a personal God (Wiest 1997, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Throw-Ins In A Soccer Team While most soccer teams will have several throw ins throughout the game, many teams spend almost no time practicing them. If you are a soccer coach and your players are often committing throw in violations by lifting their feet or failing to bring the ball all the way behind their heads, it is especially important to practice throw ins. While throw ins may feel like a mundane skill, practicing them can become a game. To make practicing throw ins fun, set up cones on the field. Spread the cones out, with some close to the sidelines and others farther away. Split your players into two teams. Allow a player from one team to throw the ball in, trying to hit a cone. Then allow a player from the other team to try. Continue to switch back and forth. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Suez Canal Crisis Analysis Heavily influenced by foreign affairs, even as Canada grew more distinguished in their own independence, international conflicts continued to be a leading factor in shaping Canada s identity as a country. Canada s various stances when it comes to the Suez Canal, and First and Second Iraq wars, are excellent examples of the progress Canadahas made within their foreign policy, as they ve developed as a country over time. Advancing further away from blindly following connected powers like Britain and the United States, Canada finds its ways to show its uniqueness in the face of these conflicts. Without the support of the UN, Britain and the US decided Iraq was not doing as they should and offered Hussein an ultimatum on March 7 demanding he leave Iraq willingly, or be taken by force. Looking towards Canada for support they were met with a surprising hostility towards the idea given their participation in the first Iraq war. Jean Chretien however stated that unless the UN had come to an agreement no action would be taken by Canada. Although many believed this to be a controversial decision, Christien was firm in their choice and stated But we re an independent country, and in fact it was a very good occasion to show our independence, [2] which he told to The Huffington Post. It was a bold statement of the time, and although meant with no ill will, there was a fear that it may damage US/ Canada relations forever. Controversially, the way Canada announced it would not participate in the war caused some rifts as many deemed it to be unprofessional, as the announcement was made public in Canada before anyone else found ... The devaluation of currency is a major plank of World Bank and IMF policies for the development of the economies of Third World countries. Nigeria s compliance with this demand was allegedly tied to further rescheduling of Nigeria s external debt and fresh aids. Purchasing power of citizens would reduce with increases in price level and this would worsen the pervasiveness of poverty. Speculative activities in the economy will increase as a result of instability. REVIEW OF RELEVANT LITERATURE There is a vast body of empirical literature on the impacts of devaluation on output and prices. In many of the existing studies, it has been recognized that the possible effects of devaluation on output could be contractionary. To this extent, several channels through which devaluation could be contractionary have been identified. First, Diaz Alejandro (1965) examined the impacts of devaluation on some macroeconomic variables in Argentina for the period 1955 61. He observed that devaluation was contractionary for Argentina because it induces a shift in income distribution towards savers, which in turn depresses consumption and real absorption. He equally observed that current account improved because of the fall in absorption relative to output. Cooper (1971) also reviewed twenty four ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

But many now only know her as a meme, or a played out joke. Lil Mama s first single, Lip Gloss came out in 2007 and was the game changer for her becoming career. Lip Gloss had all of the makings of a one hit wonder a catchy beat, a less catchy dance to accompany it, and an everyday item, lip gloss, as its focal point. Although, her flow wasn t bad and her dance moves were on point, people didn t quite know what to do with Lil Mama during her breakout years. She was a teenage girl demanding to be taken seriously in an industry dominated by adult men, and seemed to be caught in pop culture limbo, not bubbly enough, but also not quite real enough for us to really care about.... In 2009, while still riding her Lip Gloss popularity, Lil Mama attended the MTV Video Music Awards, as Jay Z and Alicia Keys performed their infamous song Empire State of Mind, where Lil Mama made a decision that set her career on a downhill path. BeyoncГ© tried to stop her, but she pushed her way, uninvited, onto the stage with two of the biggest names in entertainment at the time. It was awkward, as Jay Z confirmed that it was an unwelcomed attempt to gain attention. It was also the moment that the public decided that Lil Mama was merely a joke. Too many people Lil Mama s VMA stunt made her seem as a clueless outsider who was either too cocky or too ill advised to think that she could share the stage with such huge names in the industry. What makes things worse is this incident just so happened to correspond with the Internet s shift from tech geeks exclusively to a mainstream social media commodity and Lil Mama, as the stage crashing third wheel became the visual foundation of too many jokes; that never ... Eighty five percent of Venus surface is made up of low lying volcanic plains. As we know, Earth has volcanoes. Mars has two large volcanic systems, with the largest, the Tharsis region, stretching across 8,000 kilometers of the planet. Volcanoes exist due to the buildup of pressure in the outer core. This forces the molten core up to the surface of a planet, in the form of lava. 4.What are the characteristics of the inner planets? How do these vary from the outer planets? Inner planets all contain a core, mantle, and crust. These planets are very dense and rocky. In comparison to outer planets, inner planets are smaller, denser, and rockier. 5.What evidence is there to support that planets exist outside of our Solar System? The discovery of other stars in early stages of formation support the fact that planets exist outside of our solar system. These stars, surrounded by disks of gas and dust, are called proplyds. According to astronomers, these disks are like that which the solar nebula was believed to be like, providing a good source of evidence of other planets. • 47. The Pensieve And Harry Potter Comparison The term Poetry is a word derived from the Greek meaning to make or create. Much like the word sugguests, Poetry is the art of creating literature, which deals with human experiences. To understand bette what Poetry is, one can use the Pensieve in Harry Potter. The Pensieve has the appearance of a hollow stone, with runes and symbols carved around it s opening. Inside the Pensieve is a silver cloud like liqiud/gas which is the physical appearance of the memories owned by the person who owns the Pensieve. When touching the surface of the silver memories, the person who touches it gets transported into the memory they touch, therefore giving that person the ability to view it from a third person point of view. Although the person can view the memory as if they are there, they can neither change the order of events, nor participate or influence the memory they are viewing. However, the person is capable of feeling the emotions, desires or views of the person who owns the memory. In this analogy, the person supplying the memory would be the Poet, and the person viewing it would be the reader. In Poems, the Poet uses the four senses to transport the reader into a picture that he is painting. The reader can feel all the shared emotion that the Poet tries to convey, but not unlike in the ...
