PISA Response Paper
Since, the starting of PISA the results from the assessment along with TIMMS, and PIRLS have
received a number of mixed reactions from countries around the world. According to Patrick Gonzales
a research analyst at the National Center of Education and Statistics the United States 2012 PISA
findings were not surprising. According to PISA 2012, the United States currently ranks 17th in
reading, 27th in mathematics, and 20th in science (PISA 2012 US, 2012). Over the years, the results
from the Nation s Report Card an ongoing national assessment of fourth, eight, and twelve graders
provides a similar insight into of what students can and cannot do in the U.S. Therefore, PISA results
did not provide much new insight into the strengths and weaknesses ... Show more content on

Germany did not partake in national or international assessments. Thence, it was unaware of the
fragmentation of its own educational system. The large scale assessments Germany had partaken in
were in 1962 to 1972 with the First International Science Study and again in 1995 with TIMMS.
Although, the release of the 1995 results of TIMMS indicated flaws in Germany s educational system
the release of the PISA 2000 made an impact in the country because it reaffirm the outcomes from
TIMMS. The PISA 2000 indicated that students were below OECD average in reading, math, and
science. The initial results were shocking in Germany because there was a strong belief of the
superiority of the education system held by the Germans (Neumann, Fischer, Kauertz, 2010). Edelgard
Bulmahn notes, a country with the economic and political significance of Germany belongs at the top
of the league (2002). The results from the first PISA study encourage and created reform across
Germany. Some of these reforms included the formation of National Standards and National
Assessments, increasing the number of schools that offer all day schooling, and reforms to improve
equity and promote quality in education (PISA 2012 Germany, 2012). To promote quality in education
and equity Germany sponsored programs to include teacher training on intercultural competence,
funding of SINUS to increase efficiency of mathematics and science instruction, and the creation of of

Siddhartha Gautama The Buddha And His Journey, The Epoch...
The story of Siddhartha Gautama is one of renunciation from a life of privilege and wealth to that of
monastic asceticism, driven by an innate desire to reach enlightenment through the banishment of
suffering and spiritual emptiness (Wattananarong). Gautama left behind wealth and nobility in order to
cease his own suffering and upon achieving his own enlightenment, provided a path for others to
follow. Following his enlightenment, Gautama came to be known as the Buddha and his journey, the
epoch of Buddhism.
Unaccepting of some social and cultural practices of the time, the Buddha was openly critical of the
Hindu Brahman s possessiveness and almost secretive knowledge of the Veda texts; sharing this
knowledge only with their son s, assuring their family s position socially and
spiritually(Wattananarong). Accordingly, he proposed the solution to the cessation of one s suffering
should be available to and for everyone, rather than to an exclusive few based on if one becomes a
Brahma or Outcaste by birth, one becomes either by living well or living badly (Wattananarong). For
this reason, he rejected the caste system predicated on the belief that all people are equal and have a
right to choose how to live their lives, thereby making decisions about their future and potentially
reduce or eliminate their own suffering.
Hence, based on Buddha s rejection of predetermined privilege and entitlement of enlightenment for
some, while denying others, it appears implausible

Essay on Comparing Excess in Morrison’s Sula and...
Application of Excess in Morrison s Sula and Ginsberg s Howl
In William Blake s Marriage of Heaven and Hell, he declares that the road of excess leads to the
palace of wisdom...Those who restrain desire, do so because theirs is weak enough to be restrained.
These beliefs are reiterated and expanded upon in both Toni Morrison s novel Sula and Allen Ginsberg
s epic poem Howl. Both authors challenge the conception of socially imposed boundaries, which
suppress the absolute freedom of thought and action, by venerating the human characteristic of excess.
Instead of abiding by the social norms of the general cultural animosity towards excess, Morrison and
Ginsberg use this vilified attribute as a means to transcend the aforementioned ... Show more content

This occurs when Sula overhears her mother confessing that although she loves her daughter, she
doesn t particularly like her. Only moments later Sula accidentally heaves Chicken Little into the river
where he drowns. These coupling of events deflate all the idealistic conceptions of trust and reliance
in the world that she once had: The first experience taught her there was no other that you could count
on; the second that there was no self to count on either. She had no center, no speck around which to
grow (118 119).
The traumatic consequences of these events stunt Sula s emotional maturation and understanding at
the raw age of twelve. From this moment on, her emotional wellbeing is solely restricted to what she
has learned from her family and immediate surroundings, with no chance of growth: Eva s arrogance
and Hannah s self indulgence merged in her and, with a twist that was all her own imagination, she
lived out her days exploring her own thoughts and emotions, giving them full reign, feeling no
obligation to please anybody unless their pleasure pleased her (118). This excess in behavior is
undeniably childlike in nature, which is due to the retardation of Sula s emotional and social growth at
such a young age.

conceptions of

9. Explain why the glomerulus is such a high pressure capillary bed. It is both fed and drained by
arterioles (which are highpressure vessels compared to venules), and the afferent arteriole has a larger
diameter than the efferent arteriole.
How does its high pressure condition aid its function of filtrate formation? The higher the capillary
pressure, the more filtrate will be formed.

Compare And Contrast Baroque And Baroque Music
Romantic and Baroque Music: Two Different Styles Music has been categorized over time in different
periods, each of which have their own characteristics, composers and music style. Two of those
important periods were baroque and romantic, which had left an important musical legacy though
history. The baroque was the period from about 1600 to 1750. It was called one of the best periods of
the music history, because there was a huge change from the style of composition from antique and
renaissance music which achieved great expectations about this music. Furthermore, Baroque music
was written by great composers such as Bach, Handel, Rameau and Vivaldi who were the most
representative composers of the period. In addition, Baroque music was characterized ... Show more

First, in the baroque period vocal and instrumental music had the same importance, this allowed that
the composers had a wide range in composition types. Some composers chosen more vocally style and
others preferred the instrumental style, which generated an amount of balance in composition during
this period. In addition, instruments were created with specific features to perform the baroque music,
they presented a sound and form characteristic, they were built to sound full and rich, but in small type
sized, mainly strings instruments. The bow and the technique to play this kind of music required a
careful and distinct method which caused that its texture and timbre were unique and special for that
era. The most representative instruments of baroque period were organ and harpsichord, however, in
most of the compositions of this period strings, woodwinds and brass instruments were also used by
the compositors, and these instruments were important for the baroque orchestra. Some instruments
used in the baroque period were: violin, viola da gamba, lute, violoncello, oboe, bassoon and trumpet.
Moreover, baroque orchestra was characterized as small number of instrumentalists, and it was form
mainly by strings instruments with a few woodwinds and brass, which gave the colorful contrast in the
orchestra, this was called chamber orchestra. On

A Long Way Gone Theme Essay
A Long Way Gone
In this essay I m going to be discussing three themes from the novel A Long Way Gone By Ishmael
Beah. The three themes I am going to be talking about are survival, family, and war. There are many
themes in this novel, but I believe these are the three most important ones. I will explain each theme,
give quotes from the book showing the theme and then explain how they are significant and show the
theme.
In A Long Way Gone, A big part of the story is Ishmael explaining what he and his friends had to do to
stay alive through the civil war. This is showing the theme, survival. Survival is to show that it wasn t
easy for him, or for anyone. Everyone was scared the might die, which caused people to do irrational
things. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

first thing he did was ask me if I was hurt from falling. I told him I was fine, but he examined my

because Junior, his older brother, didn t learn any magic, but he wanted to keep Ishmael s imagination
running, and give him something to believe in. When Ishmael fell, It was obvious that Junior cared
deeply about his younger brother and wanted to make sure he was okay after falling. Another example
of family as a theme is towards the end of the book, when Ishmael is talking about when he was
seven. He wrote, Pa Sesay, one of my friends grandfather, had told us many stories that night, but
before he began telling the last story, he repeatedly said This is a very important story. ... There was a

Essay Jewish Resistance to the Nzi Holocaust
Despite all of these internal and external factors contributing to a lack of Jewish resistance to the
Holocaust, there was resistance in existence in many forms; the resistance that did occur must not be
diminished or overlooked. When considering the definition of resistance , historians divide themselves
on what this entails; some believe it to be only active, armed resistance attempts, while others define it
more liberally. According to Yehuda Bauer, resistance entails any group action consciously taken in
opposition to known or surmised laws, actions, or intentions directed against the Jews by the Germans
and their supporters. Considering resistance with a broad definition such as this ensures that the efforts
made at resistance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This symbolic form of resistance is placed within Bauer s definition of resistance in that it entailed
group demonstrations and protests actively opposed to the Nazi regime. Non violent resistance began
to evolve as the Jews were transported to the concentration camps. Upon their initial arrival in the
concentration camps, inmates attempted to aid each other in various ways, such as by giving those that
were extremely malnourished extra food or attempting to lessen the workload on those that were
weaker by taking their place; these acts, although not aimed directly against the SS, were simply
keeping one another alive. These acts can be considered under Bauer s definition of resistance in that
the groups motives in sustaining themselves as a whole was in direct opposition to the central idea of
the SS to break down and destroy the Jewish population. These acts also helped lead to the later
active, armed resistance in that they helped to keep inmates alive and maintain their strength, as well
as providing them with a will to resist. As the Jews became aware of their imminent extinction,
resistance continued to evolve, taking a more direct form in instances of escape and sabotage. There
were instances of Jewish escape from concentration camps; two Jewish prisoners successfully escaped
from Dachau in 1933 and later publicized what was occurring in the camp. However, instances of
escape were

Emily s First Day of School
7:00 a.m. I wake up to the sound of my phone screaming in my ear. My mom is also yelling Emily,
turn that alarm off! Some of us are trying to sleep! Today is the first day of school so my friends are
all texting me. As I walk to the bathroom, I grab a skirt and a top that I hung up last night. My friends
and I decided that we should all wear skirts on the first day of school. As I finish getting ready I grab
my phone to look at the time. The time is 8:15, so I run downstairs and find that my family has already
cleaned up breakfast, but as usual my mom has left me a waffle to grab as I run out the door. I arrive
to school just in time to find my friends are beginning to walk inside. But just as I spot them I realize
that I am not wearing the right outfit. While I was getting ready they decided to wear dresses. I search
my purse for my phone and it is nowhere to be found. This is beginning to be a bad day. My friends all
walk over to my car, but I don t want to face them. This same thing happened to another girl that is in
the group last year. We had decided to wear jeans, but then switched to jean shorts because it was
really hot out. We all didn t talk to her until her mom brought her jean shorts. I decide its best if I just
drive home and grab a dress and my phone and be a little late to school. So as I pull out I yell to thaem
that I ll be back soon. As I drive home I m thinking about which dress to wear. As I pull into my

Summary Of Sharon Wheeler s Essay
Sharon Wheeler conducted a research on elementary kids identified as sporty, meaning playing sport
is important in their lives as well as their parents. She is a PhD student who attends the University of
Chester in the UK. She found out parents believe it is important for children participate in sports. In
addition, she also found out that parents also have an important role by investing, energy, and willing
dedicated family time. Parents are the one that take their children to every practice and game that it
becomes a routine or in other words life style. But that support also came with limitations. They are
not there to coach them nor critique them, they are just there to vocally encourage them. In the UK

Some families do not have the resources to sustain these certain lifestyles that come with participating
in any sport. You also must consider the single parent families as well. She also concludes that we
should also study families as the direct context in which sports participation is started and cultivated.
Wheeler believe that people with low income could not be able to sustain the life style when it comes
to participating in a sport. It becomes difficult for that child to stay committed to that sport or can even
be able to participate in several sports as well. Her research shows in order of beginning and
remaining in a sport is closely related in which sport participation is funded. Furthermore, she
discussed about how communities based programs sport that are presented to them are less likely to

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Videoconferencing
Videoconferencing, basically this is the simultaneous real time transmission of audio and video (voice,
moving images) and data such as computer graphics, graphs, electronic documents between selected
users or groups of users.
By using videoconferencing, we see our interlocutor, so we have the impression that we are in one
room with the people attending the meeting.
1.2 Modes of videoconferencing
Point to Point Video Conferencing allows the transmission of audio and video signals between two
locations (people or groups of people gathered in two places). This is the simplest and cheapest mode
as it only uses two terminals and links between them.
Multipoint video conferencing allows the transmission of audio and video signals between several
(more than two) locations. In this mode you will need to use additional network devices such as video
conferencing servers (video conferencing bridges), gateways, gatekeeper, etc. In this mode you can
make another division into:
Voice over mode one location is the voice of the other station they see at their terminal, while the
voice of the terminal sees the person speaking
Conference mode divided monitor includes images from several locations (most often we see images
of participants who recently spoke in the meeting)
Discussion mode unlike the voice over mode, the person currently speaking is seen by all participants
in the meeting.
Management mode one person (the manager) has complete control over

The Effects Of Climate On Elephants
The climate is still very hot, it s 1,002,016. The season of summer has now just started. It is also the
10,021st century. The African bush elephant fans itself with its giant ears to regulate its body
temperature. He circulates the air around his head and torso by moving his ears back and forth. The
ancestors of the twenty first century have smaller ears and some had ears that were a bit bigger. As the
years past more and more elephants with bigger ears were more common, but as more like thousands
of years the climate started boiling of how much heat there was. This made the elephants with the
smaller ears not be able to cool down as fast as the big eared elephants, as a result of this the elephants
with the small ears slowly died off.

Off Base Living Vs Military Life Essay
Military Life: On base Versus Off base Living
Sacrificing their lives serving the United States of America, military personnel at least deserve a
worthy home. It is common for military families to move every few years and each time comes with a
decision of living in a civilian home of their choice or an assigned family sized home on the military
base to which they are assigned. Both options have their pros and cons: for instance, their differences
in privacy, cost effectiveness, and security are all major factors in which home location is the better
option.
A lack of privacy can be a significant issue for many who are raised modestly, but others may not
think it is a big deal. On base, it is common to live in tight nit communities with co workers who can
literally hear their neighbor s toilet flush; that s embarrassing! It may be convenient to have an on base
commissary, hospital, school, and shopping mall; however, usually everyone living there takes
advantage of these amenities and gets to know each other very well, so the latest gossip spreads like

all that money into something that will be left behind appears pointless. As well as the home
investment costs, the commute for living off base is also pricey to get to work and everywhere else
depending on the distance. The traffic hasn t even been taken in to account and everyone knows how
irritating it is. Fortunately, the military provides a housing allowance for those who choose to live off

Personal Narrative-Escapism In Poetry
While reading over the prompt for this writing assignment, before I actually even sat down and gave it
good thought, I had an epiphany! My favorite quote seemed to fit into my life a little bit more through
my English! A wises man known as Joel Osteen once said, You can change your world by changing
your words.. Remember, death and life are all power of the tongue. Meanwhile giving thought into
who I am as a writer, something finally dawned onto me. I often find it difficult to express myself or
to even find the right words to begin to. I try my hardest to put interest into all of my writing, for I feel
as if that is when I do my best work. But, overall, I truthfully find writing very strenuous. What
intrigues me is that I was not always this way. During my sixth grade year I found a love for writing
poetry, (I will forever thank Mrs. Shaffer for the simple Simile Poem assignment). Somewhere
between the summer before seventh grade, and mid year I had lost interest. May it be due to the
exhausting poetry unit we endeavored that year, or just simply I developed this so called writers block,
I have yet to find out. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Pros And Cons Of Roe V. Wade
In 1971 Jane Roe attempted to have an abortion, but was opposed by Henry Wade, the District
Attorney of Dallas who was determined to enforce the Texas law that made abortion, unless medically
necessary, illegal. The conflict only grew in strength and publicity until it landed at the Supreme Court
in the now legendary case of Roe v. Wade. When the legal battle was over, women were granted the
right to abortion in the second trimester, a right that continues to cause conflict 40 years later. The case
ran from 1971 1973 and it got a heated debate started across the United States. The topic of abortion
had always been debated heavily but Roe v. Wade sparked a wave of protests and new opinions. The
argument over abortion prior to Roe v. Wade is similar to what it is today; there are those who support
abortion (pro choice) and those who don t (pro life). Of course each has its exceptions to what is
viewed as acceptable. Many supported abortion because women went to extremely dangerous lengths
to terminate their pregnancies. ¨In 1965, illegal abortions made up one sixth of all pregnancy and
childbirth related deaths¨, (Planned Parenthood; Roe v. Wade). Many religious leaders and figures
were anti abortion because of their beliefs, ¨Doe v. Bolton [410 U.S. 179 (1973)] , the Supreme Court
ruled that the unborn child is not a ¨person¨ at any time before birth...¨ (The Catholic Advance; A Non
Person).
The abortion laws prior to Roe v. Wade in Texas were, for the most part,

How Crime-Forecasting Software and the Principles of...
How Crime Forecasting Software and the Principles of Psychology Work Together
Researchers have come up with an innovative way of predicting crime by the use of Crime
Forecasting Software. The software is meant to enable the security agencies to maximize their
effectiveness in dealing with crime within their specific area of responsibility using limited resources.
It goes beyond the convectional hot spot analysis and evaluates both spatial and temporal attributes in
incident data. With the result, it creates a forecast map of areas where and when crime is likely to
occur. It comes with an integrated map viewer to help visualize crime hotspots every moment of the
day. It creates forecast models from latest crime data from Records management ... Show more

Thus, the probability of one engaged in crime can be traced to the childhood. The principle of analysis
and theory of psychodynamic perspective come into play in analysing the likelihood of one engaging
in crime in future.
2. Multivariate methods.
These methods take into account several variables that come into play. It involves simultaneous
observation and analysis of more than one outcome of a variable. In crime forecasting, valuables used
could be fixed elements on a particular area that has high rate of crime, (nature of residents and land
issues). These factors do not change easily. Spatial interactions in the data are also analysed. (For
example, using time lags to show displacement of crime from a hot spot to neighbouring areas due to
police crackdown on offenders.)Finally, lead factors in the forecast are defined. (example; steady rise
in small crimes will lead to hard ones in the future.) The study further seeks to show the relationship
between the variables and the problem being studied. Cognitive theory in psychology explains that
people develop reasoning in an ordinary and logical fashion. The analysis of your behaviour may be
dependent on several factors affecting your reasoning. To make decisions, you undergo a series of
complex processes in the mind. However, you are likely to be affected by issues such as poor
judgement, beliefs and personal aspirations. In forecasting, each of the independent

airport, off the Pacific Coast highway one. It was a typical routine indeed, to arise in the wee ours of
early Saturday mornings, to drive and arrive at the most beautiful, unforgettable beach. In spite of rude
awakening to the cacophony of birdsongs in the break of dawn, it was a galvanizing routine on
Saturday mornings, over loading our hideous, yellow bronco, and driving to the beach. In addition to
our drive, we passed exit after exit, up and around the egregious neighborhoods and squalid cramming

This was the time specifically, when everyone played games, expressed their reasons, and where I
anonymously substantiated traits. For instance, my father would teach and play board games with me,
however, my father taught me different games than my brother because he believed some games were
not suitable for girls. Consequently my older fearless sister knew my father s reasons for not teaching
me the same games as my brother, were unjust, and theatrically drew the woman rights card.
Immediately thereafter my scorching aunt joined the dispute, both my sister and aunt resembled each
other from the same hand gestures, facial expressions and reasons. In the end, as always, my inspiring
mother was there with words of wisdom to put out the fuming dispute and I, to take my sassy sister to

Altered Spontaneous Brain Activity in Schizophrenia: A Meta Analysis and a Large Sample Study
(This Article was Okayed by Professor Michael Christie on May 2, 2016)
Introduction
Schizophrenia is a neuropsychiatric disorder (Xu, Y., Zhuo., Qin, W., Zhu, J., Yu, C. (2015) page one).
This disorder has been known to have structural and functional abnormalities that affect the brain (Xu,
Y., Zhuo., Qin, W., Zhu, J., Yu, C. (2015) page one). Individuals with schizophrenia suffer from
spontaneous brain activity (Xu, Y., Zhuo., Qin, W., Zhu, J., Yu, C. (2015) page one). Amplitude of low
frequency fluctuations (ALFF), fractional ALFF (fALFF), and regional homogeneity (ReHo) of blood
oxygen level dependent (BLOD) signals that come from resting state functional magnetic resonance
imaging (rs fMRI) is how spontaneous brain activity is measured (Xu, Y., Zhuo., Qin, W., Zhu, J., Yu,
C. (2015) page one). Amplitude of low frequency fluctuations (ALFF) is used to measure the blood
oxygen level dependent (BOLD). This happens by a low frequency range at a single voxel level (Xu,
Y., Zhuo., Qin, W., Zhu, J., Yu, C. (2015) page one). The fractional Amplitude in a low amplitude in
the frequency bands as a total (Xu, Y., Zhuo., Qin, W., Zhu, J., Yu, C. (2015) page one). The regional

Essay On Service Design
Legacy systems built with specific design principles that can hinder the IT department when they
begin to update or make changes to upgrade the software. Integration of these legacy systems became
an issue in the late 90s when little was done to prepare organizations on how their data would be
shared through other platforms (Erl, 2008). This issue introduced many an array of problems for
organizations, especially when trying to convert into a larger scale model of previous designs. The
lack of stability, extensibility, and inadequate interoperability of frameworks are just a few of the
noted problems when enterprises attempt to adopt SOA on a larger scale (Erl, 2008). The acceptance

The services created will allow consumers the access to the most up to date products while giving the
enterprise the correct data for further advancement in technology and business. Short term solutions to
software can lead to numerous problems. The number one issue has the IT team trying to diagnose an
issue in limited amounts of time. The software can be complicated to understand thus limiting the
amount of time spent on designing the application could result in errors in the processes for the
enterprise. Also, short term operations eliminate the opportunity to reduce cost and increase
production times for the organizations. Ultimately, short term procedures do not allow the time for real
time decisions as well as the time to develop compatible software. In conclusion, a successful
investment will revolve around the amount of time invested in the products. An organization must
devote ample time for a product to reap the maximum amount of benefits. Time equals money and to
get a favorable return an enterprise must put in the time to see any gains from their investment.

as a cave. Plato says in the opening of this article Let me show in a figure how far our nature is
enlightened and unenlightened . With our heads restrained to a wall and not capable to perceive our
surrounding, we accept as true the shadows to be reality. He then goes on to explain that with a teacher
is the only way that we can move from our state of being a prisoner and moving into a new reality
beyond the cave and that we would discover the true reality to be painful, and then want to return to
the state of deception of the cave. He explains this by saying Plato also believes that we are all have

Reflection About Grit
I am inspired by the idea of grit that was introduced by an American academic psychologist and
popular science author, Angela Lee Duckworth. Angela s research has evolved around discovering
why some individuals accomplish more than other individuals despite having the same talent,
intelligence, and resources. She went to graduate school to become psychologist, and that was when
she discovered that one characteristic that emerged as a significant predictor of success is grit.
According to Angela, Grit is not talent. Grit is not luck. Grit is not how intensely, for the moment, you
want something. Instead, it is about having a goal you care about so much that it organizes and gives
meaning to almost everything you do. And grit is holding steadfast to that goal. Even when you fall
down. Even when you screw up. Even when progress toward that goal is halting or slow.
Thinking about Angela Duckworth s focus on the need for grit to succeed and achieve our goals, I
come to a question of whether mindfulness can possibly play a role in developing grit. As a student, I
have a quite hectic schedule. I am taking 16 credits, working 12 hours on weekdays, and I oftentimes
have rehearsals at least three times a week, depending on how many gigs I have on the weekend.
I keep feeling overwhelmed and this gives me a hard time focusing in class. Last week I fell asleep
during my Sequencing Production Technique class. It was a 2 hour class and I was asleep for the first
hour. As a result, I missed most of the materials so I had to personally ask my classmates about what
they discussed in the class.
One of the factors that makes me feel fatigued is because my mind is on high alert all of the time.
According to Canadian biochemist Hans Selye of McGill University in Montreal, our body releases
cortisol in response to fear or stress by the adrenal glands. Cortisol is a stress hormone which
increases blood sugar levels to give energy, and constant stress means that you could quickly be
running on empty. Overly released cortisol can be baneful to the body and mind. It can mess with the
ability to sleep, which can contribute to feelings of fatigue.
My goal is to be mentally and physically fit so I would be able to focus in class, not

Us Foreign Policy 1865-1914, Expansionist or Isolationist...
Was the foreign policy of the United States primarily isolationist or expansionist through 1865 1914?
At the turn of the century, and after gaining our independence, the United States land mass more than
doubled through the use of purchasing, annexing, and war. However, the foreign policy of our
government took a predominately isolationist stand. This was a national policy of abstaining from
political or economic relations with other countries. General Washington shaped these values by
upholding and encouraging the use of these principles by warning to avoid alliances in his farewell
speech. The reasoning behind these actions was that the Republic was a new nation. We did not have
the resources or the means to worry about other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the United States didn t have the authority or firepower to back this up, it resulted in almost
four decades of compulsory US involvement in any foreign affair. After the Civil War, Isolationistic
practices grew stronger as the government had to find a way to re unite the torn nation. President
Grover Cleveland promised to avoid committing the nation to form any alliances with other countries
while also opposed to the acquisition of new land. The climate of post Civil War US prevented us
from deep involvement in foreign affairs. Our navy was also weakened by the war. Our natural
resources were scarce and our diplomatic relations with other countries had been neglected. With the
attention of our government focused solely on our nation, we proceeded to develop our interior. One
of the biggest reasons for growth in US land mass was the public idea of Manifest Destiny. Americans
believed that it was the destiny of the United States to populate a huge, vast continent.
In the 1890 s, the Isolationist movement took a back seat and American foreign policy followed heavy
Expansionism. After the total expansion into the west, Americans perceived notion of Manifest
Destiny changed. They believed that since they were superior to other nations, their policy needed to
change from just territorial acquisition within its borders, to outside. The United States had to

Risk And Return Is The Fundamental Parameters Of Any...
Risk and Return Risk and return are the fundamental parameters of any investment. While some
investments may present greater risk they are countered by a higher rate of return. The vice versa
holds true as well, less risk corresponds to a lower return. One way to measure risk is through
calculating the standard deviation of returns. This measurement tells an investor how volatile or risky
an investment is, by providing the investor with a range of possible outcomes based on the stocks
expected return. Therefore, the lower the standard deviation percentage the less risk a given
investment has. Moreover, when risk is being analyzed for more than one investment in a portfolio, a
correlation of returns measurement is used. This calculation determines whether or not the investments
respond similarly (+1) or conversely to market changes ( 1). The closer the correlation is to 1 the more
diversified the investment is resulting in less risk (Hirt, Block Basu, 2006). Combined, these
measurements provide investors with the tools necessary to analyze an investments risk and determine
the best investment choices.
Comparing Investments Comparing the investments in the chart above, an investor can use the
standard deviation and correlation of returns to determine the given risk of the investments, as well as
which investment choice would yield a better return. With the information provided a portfolio made
up of equal parts B and C will ultimately be less risky than a

Essay about The Sociological Framework of Harriet Martineau
The Sociological Framework of Harriet Martineau
Over the past twenty years, sociology has gone through a process of self evaluation, as field
researchers and observers express a wariness about the empty universalism of speculative systems and
look for ways in which to secure empirical foundations that give way to meaningful application in a
pluralistic, postmodern world. The survival of sociology as a critical theoretical discipline is a concern
expressed by many, such as contemporary social analyst George Ritzer, who are forging new paths of
application that represent a paradigm shift in this classical social legacy. In the framework of classical
sociological theory, numerous sources, including Ritzer, investigate this brave new ... Show more

By referring to works on classical sociological theory and other sources, one can only arrive at the
conclusion that Martineau provided a conceptual framework capable of providing an integrating
paradigm for the entire field of social psychological cultural relations upon which many modern social
theorists have been able to put forth theories that are attuned to postmodern realities, as well.
(Hutcheon 2 3). In the seminal work, Studies in History and Philosophy of Science, authors note the
birth of meaningful social science concurrent with Martineau s groundbreaking social research, as
they explore her attempts to move away from subjective authorship in order to devise objective
methods for the observation and representation of the social state (Cooper Murphy, p. 122).
Martineau, and her contemporaries such as George Ritzer, clearly have found the means to do this
through the interactionist approach.
As method researchers observe, for Martineau, and her contemporary Ritzer, aesthetic considerations
are as key to their method as much as scientific observation and representation. Critics have
considered both Society in America, Martineau s most widely known work which attacks the
reality/rhetoric issues confronting methodological strategy and ethnocentrism, and her foundational
treatise on sociological theory in data collection, How to Observe Morals and Manners. These works

mkfs t ext2 /dev/loop0
The first parameter t ext2 instructs mkfs to format the file with the ext2 filesystem. This is
recommended as it allows you to resize the file if need be.
The last parameter points toward the /dev/loop0 device on which the file was bound.
losetup d /dev/loop0
This command detaches and frees the /dev/loop0 device.
Fourth, mounting your encrypted filesystem.
mount o encryption=aes256 crypto.img crypto_home
Using the mount the command the first parameter to be entered is encryption=aes256 which will tell
the mount command which cipher to use.
The value must be the cipher which you used to encrypt the file.
The second parameter specifies location of file to mount.
The third parameter designates the folder on which to mount the file.
Once mounted you can move files into the mount point and create files within it and when you are
done simply unmount the file.
[ =] Drives [= ]
First, assuming you formated your drive bind the drive to a loopback device.
losetup e aes256 /dev/loop0 /dev/sda1
The parameter e aes256 at the beginning instructs losetup on which cipher to use. The cipher type is
dependent on what your kernel supports.
In this example the AES 256 bit cipher is used but you can use other cipher types such as blowfish
interchangeably.
The second parameter /dev/loop0 is the device to which we bind the drive too. Binding the drive will
allow us to format the file with filesystem.

  • 2. PISA Response Paper Since, the starting of PISA the results from the assessment along with TIMMS, and PIRLS have received a number of mixed reactions from countries around the world. According to Patrick Gonzales a research analyst at the National Center of Education and Statistics the United States 2012 PISA findings were not surprising. According to PISA 2012, the United States currently ranks 17th in reading, 27th in mathematics, and 20th in science (PISA 2012 US, 2012). Over the years, the results from the Nation s Report Card an ongoing national assessment of fourth, eight, and twelve graders provides a similar insight into of what students can and cannot do in the U.S. Therefore, PISA results did not provide much new insight into the strengths and weaknesses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Germany did not partake in national or international assessments. Thence, it was unaware of the fragmentation of its own educational system. The large scale assessments Germany had partaken in were in 1962 to 1972 with the First International Science Study and again in 1995 with TIMMS. Although, the release of the 1995 results of TIMMS indicated flaws in Germany s educational system the release of the PISA 2000 made an impact in the country because it reaffirm the outcomes from TIMMS. The PISA 2000 indicated that students were below OECD average in reading, math, and science. The initial results were shocking in Germany because there was a strong belief of the superiority of the education system held by the Germans (Neumann, Fischer, Kauertz, 2010). Edelgard Bulmahn notes, a country with the economic and political significance of Germany belongs at the top of the league (2002). The results from the first PISA study encourage and created reform across Germany. Some of these reforms included the formation of National Standards and National Assessments, increasing the number of schools that offer all day schooling, and reforms to improve equity and promote quality in education (PISA 2012 Germany, 2012). To promote quality in education and equity Germany sponsored programs to include teacher training on intercultural competence, funding of SINUS to increase efficiency of mathematics and science instruction, and the creation of of Lesen in Deustchland (LiD) to promote reading skills of students (Ertl, ... • 4. Siddhartha Gautama The Buddha And His Journey, The Epoch... The story of Siddhartha Gautama is one of renunciation from a life of privilege and wealth to that of monastic asceticism, driven by an innate desire to reach enlightenment through the banishment of suffering and spiritual emptiness (Wattananarong). Gautama left behind wealth and nobility in order to cease his own suffering and upon achieving his own enlightenment, provided a path for others to follow. Following his enlightenment, Gautama came to be known as the Buddha and his journey, the epoch of Buddhism. Unaccepting of some social and cultural practices of the time, the Buddha was openly critical of the Hindu Brahman s possessiveness and almost secretive knowledge of the Veda texts; sharing this knowledge only with their son s, assuring their family s position socially and spiritually(Wattananarong). Accordingly, he proposed the solution to the cessation of one s suffering should be available to and for everyone, rather than to an exclusive few based on if one becomes a Brahma or Outcaste by birth, one becomes either by living well or living badly (Wattananarong). For this reason, he rejected the caste system predicated on the belief that all people are equal and have a right to choose how to live their lives, thereby making decisions about their future and potentially reduce or eliminate their own suffering. Hence, based on Buddha s rejection of predetermined privilege and entitlement of enlightenment for some, while denying others, it appears implausible ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Application of Excess in Morrison s Sula and Ginsberg s Howl In William Blake s Marriage of Heaven and Hell, he declares that the road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom...Those who restrain desire, do so because theirs is weak enough to be restrained. These beliefs are reiterated and expanded upon in both Toni Morrison s novel Sula and Allen Ginsberg s epic poem Howl. Both authors challenge the conception of socially imposed boundaries, which suppress the absolute freedom of thought and action, by venerating the human characteristic of excess. Instead of abiding by the social norms of the general cultural animosity towards excess, Morrison and Ginsberg use this vilified attribute as a means to transcend the aforementioned ... Only moments later Sula accidentally heaves Chicken Little into the river where he drowns. These coupling of events deflate all the idealistic conceptions of trust and reliance in the world that she once had: The first experience taught her there was no other that you could count on; the second that there was no self to count on either. She had no center, no speck around which to grow (118 119). The traumatic consequences of these events stunt Sula s emotional maturation and understanding at the raw age of twelve. From this moment on, her emotional wellbeing is solely restricted to what she has learned from her family and immediate surroundings, with no chance of growth: Eva s arrogance and Hannah s self indulgence merged in her and, with a twist that was all her own imagination, she lived out her days exploring her own thoughts and emotions, giving them full reign, feeling no obligation to please anybody unless their pleasure pleased her (118). This excess in behavior is undeniably childlike in nature, which is due to the retardation of Sula s emotional and social growth at such a young age. The three themes I am going to be talking about are survival, family, and war. There are many themes in this novel, but I believe these are the three most important ones. I will explain each theme, give quotes from the book showing the theme and then explain how they are significant and show the theme. In A Long Way Gone, A big part of the story is Ishmael explaining what he and his friends had to do to stay alive through the civil war. This is showing the theme, survival. Survival is to show that it wasn t easy for him, or for anyone. Everyone was scared the might die, which caused people to do irrational things. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (pg. 39) This shows the theme because Junior, his older brother, didn t learn any magic, but he wanted to keep Ishmael s imagination running, and give him something to believe in. When Ishmael fell, It was obvious that Junior cared deeply about his younger brother and wanted to make sure he was okay after falling. Another example of family as a theme is towards the end of the book, when Ishmael is talking about when he was seven. Essay Jewish Resistance to the Nzi Holocaust Despite all of these internal and external factors contributing to a lack of Jewish resistance to the Holocaust, there was resistance in existence in many forms; the resistance that did occur must not be diminished or overlooked. When considering the definition of resistance , historians divide themselves on what this entails; some believe it to be only active, armed resistance attempts, while others define it more liberally. According to Yehuda Bauer, resistance entails any group action consciously taken in opposition to known or surmised laws, actions, or intentions directed against the Jews by the Germans and their supporters. This symbolic form of resistance is placed within Bauer s definition of resistance in that it entailed group demonstrations and protests actively opposed to the Nazi regime. Non violent resistance began to evolve as the Jews were transported to the concentration camps. Upon their initial arrival in the concentration camps, inmates attempted to aid each other in various ways, such as by giving those that were extremely malnourished extra food or attempting to lessen the workload on those that were weaker by taking their place; these acts, although not aimed directly against the SS, were simply keeping one another alive. These acts can be considered under Bauer s definition of resistance in that the groups motives in sustaining themselves as a whole was in direct opposition to the central idea of the SS to break down and destroy the Jewish population. These acts also helped lead to the later active, armed resistance in that they helped to keep inmates alive and maintain their strength, as well as providing them with a will to resist. As the Jews became aware of their imminent extinction, resistance continued to evolve, taking a more direct form in instances of escape and sabotage. There were instances of Jewish escape from concentration camps; two Jewish prisoners successfully escaped from Dachau in 1933 and later publicized what was occurring in the camp. Some of us are trying to sleep! Today is the first day of school so my friends are all texting me. As I walk to the bathroom, I grab a skirt and a top that I hung up last night. My friends and I decided that we should all wear skirts on the first day of school. As I finish getting ready I grab my phone to look at the time. The time is 8:15, so I run downstairs and find that my family has already cleaned up breakfast, but as usual my mom has left me a waffle to grab as I run out the door. I arrive to school just in time to find my friends are beginning to walk inside. But just as I spot them I realize that I am not wearing the right outfit. While I was getting ready they decided to wear dresses. I search my purse for my phone and it is nowhere to be found. This is beginning to be a bad day. My friends all walk over to my car, but I don t want to face them. This same thing happened to another girl that is in the group last year. We had decided to wear jeans, but then switched to jean shorts because it was really hot out. We all didn t talk to her until her mom brought her jean shorts. • 13. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Videoconferencing Videoconferencing, basically this is the simultaneous real time transmission of audio and video (voice, moving images) and data such as computer graphics, graphs, electronic documents between selected users or groups of users. By using videoconferencing, we see our interlocutor, so we have the impression that we are in one room with the people attending the meeting. 1.2 Modes of videoconferencing Point to Point Video Conferencing allows the transmission of audio and video signals between two locations (people or groups of people gathered in two places). This is the simplest and cheapest mode as it only uses two terminals and links between them. Multipoint video conferencing allows the transmission of audio and video signals between several (more than two) locations. In this mode you will need to use additional network devices such as video conferencing servers (video conferencing bridges), gateways, gatekeeper, etc. In this mode you can make another division into: Voice over mode one location is the voice of the other station they see at their terminal, while the voice of the terminal sees the person speaking Conference mode divided monitor includes images from several locations (most often we see images of participants who recently spoke in the meeting) Discussion mode unlike the voice over mode, the person currently speaking is seen by all participants in the meeting. As the years past more and more elephants with bigger ears were more common, but as more like thousands of years the climate started boiling of how much heat there was. • 15. Off Base Living Vs Military Life Essay Military Life: On base Versus Off base Living Sacrificing their lives serving the United States of America, military personnel at least deserve a worthy home. It is common for military families to move every few years and each time comes with a decision of living in a civilian home of their choice or an assigned family sized home on the military base to which they are assigned. Both options have their pros and cons: for instance, their differences in privacy, cost effectiveness, and security are all major factors in which home location is the better option. A lack of privacy can be a significant issue for many who are raised modestly, but others may not think it is a big deal. On base, it is common to live in tight nit communities with co workers who can literally hear their neighbor s toilet flush; that s embarrassing! It may be convenient to have an on base commissary, hospital, school, and shopping mall; however, usually everyone living there takes advantage of these amenities and gets to know each other very well, so the latest gossip spreads like wildfire. During my sixth grade year I found a love for writing poetry, (I will forever thank Mrs. Shaffer for the simple Simile Poem assignment). • 17. The Pros And Cons Of Roe V. Wade In 1971 Jane Roe attempted to have an abortion, but was opposed by Henry Wade, the District Attorney of Dallas who was determined to enforce the Texas law that made abortion, unless medically necessary, illegal. The conflict only grew in strength and publicity until it landed at the Supreme Court in the now legendary case of Roe v. Wade. When the legal battle was over, women were granted the right to abortion in the second trimester, a right that continues to cause conflict 40 years later. The case ran from 1971 1973 and it got a heated debate started across the United States. The topic of abortion had always been debated heavily but Roe v. Wade sparked a wave of protests and new opinions. The argument over abortion prior to Roe v. Wade is similar to what it is today; there are those who support abortion (pro choice) and those who don t (pro life). Of course each has its exceptions to what is viewed as acceptable. Many supported abortion because women went to extremely dangerous lengths to terminate their pregnancies. ¨In 1965, illegal abortions made up one sixth of all pregnancy and childbirth related deaths¨, (Planned Parenthood; Roe v. Wade). Many religious leaders and figures were anti abortion because of their beliefs, ¨Doe v. Bolton [410 U.S. 179 (1973)] , the Supreme Court ruled that the unborn child is not a ¨person¨ at any time before birth...¨ (The Catholic Advance; A Non Person). The abortion laws prior to Roe v. In crime forecasting, valuables used could be fixed elements on a particular area that has high rate of crime, (nature of residents and land issues). These factors do not change easily. Spatial interactions in the data are also analysed. (For example, using time lags to show displacement of crime from a hot spot to neighbouring areas due to police crackdown on offenders.)Finally, lead factors in the forecast are defined. • 27. Reflection About Grit I am inspired by the idea of grit that was introduced by an American academic psychologist and popular science author, Angela Lee Duckworth. Angela s research has evolved around discovering why some individuals accomplish more than other individuals despite having the same talent, intelligence, and resources. She went to graduate school to become psychologist, and that was when she discovered that one characteristic that emerged as a significant predictor of success is grit. According to Angela, Grit is not talent. Grit is not luck. Grit is not how intensely, for the moment, you want something. Instead, it is about having a goal you care about so much that it organizes and gives meaning to almost everything you do. And grit is holding steadfast to that goal. Even when you fall down. Even when you screw up. Even when progress toward that goal is halting or slow. Thinking about Angela Duckworth s focus on the need for grit to succeed and achieve our goals, I come to a question of whether mindfulness can possibly play a role in developing grit. As a student, I have a quite hectic schedule. I am taking 16 credits, working 12 hours on weekdays, and I oftentimes have rehearsals at least three times a week, depending on how many gigs I have on the weekend. I keep feeling overwhelmed and this gives me a hard time focusing in class. Last week I fell asleep during my Sequencing Production Technique class. It was a 2 hour class and I was asleep for the first hour. As a result, I missed most of the materials so I had to personally ask my classmates about what they discussed in the class. One of the factors that makes me feel fatigued is because my mind is on high alert all of the time. According to Canadian biochemist Hans Selye of McGill University in Montreal, our body releases cortisol in response to fear or stress by the adrenal glands. Cortisol is a stress hormone which increases blood sugar levels to give energy, and constant stress means that you could quickly be running on empty. While some investments may present greater risk they are countered by a higher rate of return. The vice versa holds true as well, less risk corresponds to a lower return. One way to measure risk is through calculating the standard deviation of returns. This measurement tells an investor how volatile or risky an investment is, by providing the investor with a range of possible outcomes based on the stocks expected return. Therefore, the lower the standard deviation percentage the less risk a given investment has. Moreover, when risk is being analyzed for more than one investment in a portfolio, a correlation of returns measurement is used. This calculation determines whether or not the investments respond similarly (+1) or conversely to market changes ( 1). The closer the correlation is to 1 the more diversified the investment is resulting in less risk (Hirt, Block Basu, 2006). Combined, these measurements provide investors with the tools necessary to analyze an investments risk and determine the best investment choices. Comparing Investments Comparing the investments in the chart above, an investor can use the standard deviation and correlation of returns to determine the given risk of the investments, as well as which investment choice would yield a better return. The survival of sociology as a critical theoretical discipline is a concern expressed by many, such as contemporary social analyst George Ritzer, who are forging new paths of application that represent a paradigm shift in this classical social legacy.
