The Jewelry, By Guy De Maupassant And O Connor
When contemplating whether a work of literature is worth reading, most readers look at the back
cover of the book to read a short summary. Some critics look for tone and interesting plot twists, but
the common reader looks for a purpose or lesson. Sure, powerful words and phrases contribute, but
without the anticipation that one will gain knowledge from the story, it will be put right back on the
bookshelf. Long novels with a back cover have hundreds of pages to reveal themes. However, short
stories do not have nearly as much time to display a theme. In Guy de Maupassant s The Jewelry, the
main character, Lantin sees and experiences change through his life after his wife passes away. In
Flannery O Connor s A Good Man is Hard to find, the grandmother s actions cost an entire family s
life. Both stories contains a similar theme but in different ways. Despite their short time frames,
Maupassant and O Connor both reveal a similar didactic medium nobody is perfect. Maupassant s
short story begins with a description of a young girl who represents the perfect woman. Her gentle
nature and manners attracted all of the men in the story. However, in The Jewelry , he states that ...she
got into the habit of suspending in her pretty ears two big cut pebbles, fashioned in imitation of
diamonds... (Maupassant 52). When first reading this, one would not find these as faults but instead
assume that the woman is down to earth for taking such pride in false jewelry. However, when she

Mexico Research Paper
Mexico is a large country that was reborn as a result of the European colonization of the Americas.
Although colonial influence largely reshaped Mexico, its Native American roots have remained a
prominent element of its culture. Mexico s history marks the origin of several advanced Amerindian
civilizations, including the Olmec, Toltec, Teotihuacan, Zapotec, Maya, and Aztec (cia.gov). It was
conquered and colonized by Spain in the early 16th century, and administered as the Viceroyalty of
New Spain for three centuries. After 300 years of Spanish rule; Mexico achieved independence early
in the 19th century (history.com, 2017).

Key Cultural Elements
The large majority of Mexico s population consists of mestizos , an ethnicity consisting in the mix of
European and Amerindian populations. The mestizo population quickly replaced the native
Amerindians during, and following the years of the Spanish colonization, largely due in part to the
mass casualties the natives suffered during Spain s occupation. Today, Mexico s ethnic groups are
estimated to be: 62% mestizo (Amerindian Spanish), 21% predominantly Amerindian natives, 7%
Amerindians, and 10% other (mostly European), according to a census published in 2012 (cia.gov).
Most of the population in Mexico can be found congregating on its bigger cities, particularly the ones
found in the middle of the country between the states of Jalisco and Veracruz. Additionally; an
estimate of a quarter of the population lives in and around Mexico City.
The colonization also established Catholicism as the mandatory religion of the newly acquired
Spanish territory. The Spanish Inquisitions aggressive action against what they considered to be
heathen beliefs, effectively eradicated the indigenous religions. Today, Catholicism

By adopting elements of UCC, the Onling gaming community web portal can provide all the
information that users need, without forcing them to research external information sites, therefore
becoming far more self serving and robust. Web Portal Design Web portals in the past were seen
primarily as gateways as was stated earlier, thereby limiting the creative control administrators could
have over the design of the web site. Due to the shift in functionality of web portals however, as well
as the added value of UCC, it has become increasingly challenging to design web sites where users
can find exactly what they are looking for (Fang, et al, 2004). Prominent gaming portals IGN (Fox
Media, 1996), and Gamespot (Deemer, et al, 1996), display the attributes of good web design, limiting
the amount of useless hyperlinks, and utilises taxonomy for articles to make them easier for users to
access the information they need. Gamespot also allows for a degree of personalisation within the site
allowing users to select which background and forum theme they wish to use, whose selection will be
stored with the user account information, and this personalisation can help the users feel connected to
the portal, thereby ensuring their continued presence (Bellas, et al, 2004). A web portal needs

Euripides Electra s Dilemma
As with much of classical literature, the Ancient Greek tragedy Electra by Euripides presents a
dilemma to the audience. In this play, the dilemma is exclusive to the audience; although it is
presented to the characters in the play, these characters do not hesitate with their plans. This age old
dilemma of kill or no kill is represented in Electra, giving the audience a choice to either sympathize
with the victim, Clytemnestra, or the main character, Electra. In Electra, Orestes and Electra, the
children of Clytemnestra, seek revenge on their mother. The two characters seek revenge because
Clytemnestra murdered her husband, their father, after he sacrificed his daughter Iphigenia.

He learns of Electra s need to avenge her father, and eventually he is revealed to be Orestes. Together,
Electra and Orestes create a plan to lure Clytemnestra into Electra s home and then murder her. Just
before Electra kills her mother, Clytemnestra, in an attempt to sway Electra away from killing her,
explains her reasons why she murdered Agamemnon: But he lured my daughter with the hope of
marriage to/ Achilles and went off taking her from home to Aulis where/ the fleet was held and there
he stretched her over the sacrificial/ altar and slashed the white throat of Iphigenia (Euripides 109). It
is at this point that the dilemma is presented to the audience of the play. Clytemnestra s explanation
presents a dilemma to the audience because the play does not provide enough background information
for the audience to decide whether Electra and Orestes actions are morally correct. As Clytemnestra
gives her explanation as to why she killed Agamemnon, the audience has a choice of either believing
her or chalking up her story to just be an attempt at living. Blinded by her need for revenge, Electra is
not swayed by her mother s story and kills her. ...some believe you, for they do not/ know you as well

Alec Jeffreys Research Paper
There are many types of investigations. Forensic investigations have been used all throughout history.
There are many different parts many different scientists have contributed to forensic investigations.
Missing persons, arson, murder, and kidnapping all require the help of a forensic investigation. One of
these contributors reigns to be a man by the name of Alec Jeffreys. His addition to the large amount of
information regarding forensic investigations has proved extremely useful to society.
Jeffreys, who was born in Oxford, lived in family that fell in the middle class budget. (Alec Jeffreys

understood the possibility of DNA fingerprinting, This process uses variations in the genetic code that
identify individuals.(Alec Jeffreys biography) The method he learned has proved critical in forensic
science. This method is a cornerstone to things the police force accomplish. It also helps to relinquish
problems involving paternity or immigration. Even in non human affairs, Jeffreys acquired the only
centre in the world, in 1987, that did DNA fingerprinting. (Alec Jeffreys biography)At the time, the
centre was extremely busy and received attention from all around the world. (Alec Jeffreys
biography)DNA fingerprinting was first used in 1985. Jeffreys was asked to solve a immigration
problem to determine the family of a British Boy whose family was from Ghana.(Alec Jeffreys
biography) The case was easily solved when the DNA results showed the boy was of close relation to
the other members of the family. The family was ecstatic to get their son, all of this would not be
possible if it were not for DNA fingerprinting. Fingerprinting was first used in the field of law in
1983.(Alec Jeffreys biography) Lynda Mann and Dawn Ashworth were raped and killed in
Narborough, Leicestershire. (Alec Jeffreys biography)The murderer, Colin Pitchfork, was convicted
and identified after a sample of his semen matched samples taken from the two deceased girls. This
played a pivotal role in the identifying of a murderer. His work proved the real killer, and also saved a
man who was almost falsely convicted of this murder. If it were not for Alec Jeffreys work, an

The Human Society Of San Diego
As we grow up in life, we often wonder what it would be like to have a pet. Some parents will go out
to the far limits to get that one of a kind dog. Others will just tell their children that having an animal
takes responsibility. Whether it is one or the other, we still have that thought in our head. In this paper,
I want to look at one place where a child or parents can get that chance to make that dream of having a
pet at home a reality. I welcome you to the humane society of San Diego. I often said to myself, this is
where are the stray animals go. Not true, when you take a look some maybe stray but others come
from a home that just plain got tired of them. Let me show you the journey of what the humane
society of San Diego can do when it comes to looking at that pet to come home with you.
History of the San Diego Human Society As we all know, we must look first at the past of the humane
society. San Diego is just one of many that are around and offer so many. The question is, where did
they get there beginnings from? Well lets go back to March of 1880, when San Diego was still in it s
beginning phases of growing. This was the start of the San Diego humane society. Looking that far
back, you can see that even than the importance of animals were looked at. From that time it was the
start of what would be a huge organization that was solely for the treatment of the animal. From that
day in March, the humane society has made its promise to training not only

Middle Class Life During The Industrial Revolution
The Middle Class Life during
The Industrial Revolution began in England around the 1780 s. It was mainly based on the cotton
industry and subsequently many of the inventions that came out of this period were mainly for
producing and manufacturing cotton. Another stage of the Industrial Revolution was based on
inventions. This is when most of the luxury goods were produced for the public. The Industrial
Revolution is seen by scholars, as noted in A History of Western Society, as basically moderate and
evolutionary. Even though the Industrial Revolution was almost inevitable many people took
advantage of the new developments that came about and raised their standards of living because of the
goods that were previously ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus demand for goods within the country complemented the demand from the colonies. This was
very important because this raised the standard of living for the average families. It was like giving a
cookie to a child, the child would always want another one. As soon as the families experienced the
better life they will always strive to achieve that same quality of life.
There were many important developments to the cotton industry that came about due to the Industrial
Revolution. The problem the cotton industry had was due to inadequate machinery or the lack of
machinery. Clothes and other things that came from the cotton industry were being produced way too
slowly and the price of the material was way too expensive for the average family. The first problem
was that yarn was not being fed fast enough to the weaver, but in 1769, two new inventions solved the
problem, the spinning jenny and the water powered frame, both of which provided yarn faster.
Edmund Cartwright, who invented the power loom, combined the machine s characteristics and
purposes into one machine in 1800. Cleaning cotton was also a tedious and time consuming job, so in
1793, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, which could clean cotton 50 times faster than the previous
outdated methods. Many people would actually walk around in filthy garments all of their lives but
because of the new inventions they could afford to buy undergarments.

Long Term Effects Of Hunger In Africa
Africa was identified as the world s poorest inhabited continent. We waste over 30 million pounds of
food a year. That food that we waste can go to African. To help people in need of food. This year,
nearly 9 million children younger than five years old will die needlessly, more than half from hunger
related causes. Chronic hunger affects more than 925 million people in the world and is, in and of
itself, a potentially deadly condition. Poor people do not have the resources whether land, tools or
money needed to grow or buy food on a consistent basis. People in African starve each day. Not every
poor person is hungry, but almost all hungry people are poor. More and more kids die each day of
thirst and starvation. Millions live with hunger and malnourishment because they simply cannot afford
to buy enough food, cannot afford nutritious foods or cannot afford the farming supplies they need to
grow enough good food of their own.
What s it like to live a life of an African? Similarly, women in hunger are so deficient of basic
nutrients that 315,000 die during childbirth from hemorrhaging every year. Most of the girls have to

In What Ways do the Poets Studied Write about Childhood Experiences?
Discord in Childhood by David Herbert Lawrence
Piano by David Herbert Lawrence
Fern Hill by Dylan Thomas
Death of a Naturalist by Seamus Heaney
The poets studied all write about their childhood in their poetry, but there are subtle differences in the
way that the poet has expressed himself and in how the poem comes across to the reader. The view of
the poets changes between the three, and the setting of the poem have both similarities and
differences. All four poems are written about childhood, but there are differences in structure and
format between each poet.

He uses phrases like mammy frog and slime kings which are childlike in their use. He also makes
references to things like a child he talks about telling the weather from the frog s colour. Fern Hill
however, is written in a more grand style similar to that of an adult expressing in words a memory
which he could not have described previously as a child. Dylan Thomas tells his poem in a much more
elaborate manner to try a get across an idea that he could not do before.
Childhood is often referred to by many writers as the happiest times of your life. Seamus Heaney s
and Dylan Thomas s poems show that they believe in that principle. However, DH Lawrence s poems
show that he did not have a happy childhood and he makes that point abundantly clear. In Death of a
Naturalist , Heaney shows that he once had a love of nature but, after one incident, he lost that love
forever. The structure of the poem shows his change of opinion: the first verse uses adjectives and nice
images that infer that the subject he is talking about is one that he likes; but the style of language
changes in the second verse where the vocabulary used shows the reader that the poet now does not
like his poem subject at all. Words like rank ,
coarse and obscene are used as negative adjectives in the second verse, so enforcing the view that he
has now lost his love for nature.

The Pros And Cons Of The Holocaust Memorial
1.) Memorialization of any sort can be a tedious process, but those regarding Holocaust remembrance
were particularly challenging given the surrounding social and political controversies that ensued.
This is primarily seen through the issue of representation, which consistently played a key role in the
creation of both the Holocaust museum in Washington D.C., and the Dachau concentration camp
memorial. While the Dachau memorial s conception stages, the designers were contemplating which
victim groups to include. For instance, the mayor of Dachau stated, Please do not make the mistake of
thinking that only heroes died in Dachau. Many inmates were...there because they illegally opposed
the regime of the day....You have to remember there were many criminals and homosexuals in
Dachau. Do we want a memorial to such people? (Harold Maruse, Dachau, 151). With this quote, the
mayor implies that the memorial will only be dedicated to those he deems worthy of representation.
Likewise, the White House officials orchestrating the American Holocaust Museum also debated a
similar notion regarding the inclusion of ethic victim groups other than the Jews. However, Wiesel and
other Holocaust survivors believed that commemorating non Jews was an ...obscene incursion into the
boundaries of Holocaust memory by those whose country men had persecuted survivors (Edward T.
Linenthal, Preserving Memory, 53). For this reason, and in order to avoid the generation of false
memories, these groups

The Controversy Of Capital Punishment
The Controversy of Capital Punishment
Capital punishment, or the death penalty, is a form of punishment that has been used as far back as the
Colonial Era in America. Although it has been around for the entirety of American history, most of the
scrutiny and controversy involving capital punishment arose in the 1972 Supreme Court Case of
Furman v. Georgia, in which it was abolished, but quickly returned in 1977. It is evident that many
citizens have ambivalent stances on capital punishment; some believing it is necessary form of
punishment while others believe that the death penalty is a violation of the Eighth Amendment.
Although capital punishment has been used throughout history and is seen by many as a form of
justified punishment, there are many reasons in favor of ending the death penalty completely. Capital
punishment is an unnecessary evil that should be found unconstitutional because of it is not practical,
it is corrupt, and it is unable to deter further homicides from being committed.
A brief history explaining the verdicts made by the Supreme Court regarding capital punishment in
American history needs to be made to understand why capital punishment has become such a national
issue in contemporary America. In the 1972 Supreme Court case Furman v. Georgia, the court ruled
that the, carrying out of the death penalty...constitutes cruel and unusual punishment, (Hugo 1). Since
the death penalty was considered at the time cruel and unusual, it made it in direct

Even though the U.S imports most of the apparel and footwear, it is worth mentioning that those are

Free trade reduces U.S jobs, but the statistics from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in fact rejects
that thought. They claimed that U.S manufactures added 800,000 of net jobs. After the North
American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) came into effect the unemployment rate was reduced. The

Risks And Risks Of Risk Management Practices
The aim of risk documentation is to provide security and information to users, such as management,
so that they can make effective decisions (HB 436:2013, pp. 88). AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009 is the
standard for risk management principles and guidelines in Australia (HB 436:2013, pp. 2).
HB436:2013 provides guidance to the application of AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009 (HB 436: 2013, pp.2).
In 2013 HB436:2004 was updated, one of the new changes states that risk management practices
should be able to traceable, however, a complete log or record of risks is not necessarily required
(HB436:2013, pg. 88). This essay will discuss the potential risks and potential decrease in risks which
may result due to more flexible documentation options.

It could be hard for stakeholders to understand risks if there is no clear documentation of particular
risks.
For risk management is to be effective, it has to be measured, reviewed and monitored (ISO AU/NZS
31000:2009, pp 14). This could also be very difficult without a good understanding of each particular
risk.
It is important for organisations to have a good understanding of their risks because they are often held
liable for the actions of their employees (Fadun 2013). If risks are not well documented, it would be
very difficult for different employees as well as management to all have the same understanding of the
risks that face the organisation. If risks are not understood, they cannot effectively be prepared for or
monitored.
Risk disclosure reduces uncertainty in investors, because it creates trusts between investors and the
organisation (Ismail, Rahman Ahmad 2013). If risks are not effectively disclosed and a risk eventuates
as a result of inadequate planning, it can affect the financial outcome of an organisation, because
investors will no longer trust them (Ismail, Rahman Ahmad 2013).
Risk disclosure can also improve the quality of strategic planning (Ismail, Rahman Ahmad 2013). If
an organisation has to disclose a risk they may be more likely to plan more effectively for it, because
they have acknowledged that it could be an issue.
Organisations usually only disclose information which

Types Of Business Entity For A Business
Of all the choices you make when starting a business, one of the most important is the type of business
entity you select for your company. Not only will this decision have an impact on how much you pay
in taxes, it will affect the amount of paperwork your business is required to do, the personal liability
you face and your ability to raise money. It s not a decision to be entered into lightly, either, or one
that should be made without sound counsel from business experts. Kalish says it s important for
business owners to seek expert advice from business professionals when considering the pros and cons
of various business entities . The business entity I have chosen for my business is sole proprietorship. I
don t want to be responsible if someone else makes a bad chose for the company. I want to run my

Business Entities The type of business entity you choose will depend on three primary factors:

forms of business entities: A sole proprietorship is the most common form of business organization. It

literary elements that enhanced the theme Love is more valuable than possessions , in The Gift of The

Food Shortage In Cuba
In the late 1980s, Cuba looked like a fairly successful developing nation, with the best health care and
education in Latin America and a per capita income comparable to that of Costa Rica(comparing to
similar country). But the prosperity of the country was inorganic and not self sustainable, it was
completely dependent on Soviet subsidies that accounted for one fourth of its economy . When the
Soviet union collapsed its subsidies and the Imports were slowed down and eventually stopped ,
pushing Cuba into deep economic crisis .This crisis have let to the slowdown of its development .Food

Becoming A Soldier In The United States Army
Introduction If you asked me to describe my life in a short essay it would be highly difficult for many
reasons. From being a country boy from Bunn, North Carolina, to enlisting in the United States Army,
and being deployed to Afghanistan the story of my life has token many paths. In this essay I will take
you down the road of me trying to enlist in the Marine Corps and becoming a soldier in the United
States Army.
The Drive to Join As a young man I have always had the ambition to serve my country. Watching
television has not made that any better for the reason when I see a commercial about the military my
motivation to join skyrockets. Walking thru Bunn High School as a senior, I remember when the
Marine recruiter used to come by in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I spent my time at Louisburg College running cross country and walked out of there with a Associates
Degree in Business Administration. After graduating, I knew that student loans were going to be a toll
and I also wanted to attend another university to gather a bachelor s degree. I wanted to please my
father and myself for the dream I always had could help me pay for college. Presenting my father with
a plan was the goal in accomplishing my dream and I knew he did not want his son to be in debt with
student loans. Gathering the information was the start so I contacted an army recruiter to see how I
was going to pay for college. He presented me with a student loan repayment program and also an
incentive how I could pay for my bachelors and possibly masters. After he gave me the plan I
presented it to my father. Again he was not for it. He told me he could let his son be buried in a pine
box for trying to defend this nation. My father was adamant but what was the deciding factor was me
letting him know I couldn t continue my education and I was going to be in debt. He then realized and
told me, son you are a man for putting your body on the line to provide for yourself and get an
education. I knew I had a winner then. Even though I did not need his permission I wanted his
condolences. I then enlisted in the United States Army as a young man at the age of 20 with a plan for
my life. I pleased my father and also accomplished a dream that

How Napoleon Maintains Control in France 1799 1814
After the long period of instability in France, Napoleon seemed to acknowledge the importance of
maintaining his power, influence and control over France and the French people. Napoleon was very
able in this regard as it is important to make the people to support you and to limit opposition,
something that Napoleon and Hitler shared in common. Napoleon maintained his power in many
different ways, rewarding people that supported him, repressing people who didn t, censoring material
that would harm his regime and producing other material to boost its popularity. He also controlled
things which were important for everyday people like religion, ... Show more content on

The next way that Napoleon maintained his control was through Repression, to limit any opposition to
his regime. Napoleon created Code Napoleon to bring uniformity of the law to all of France. This
Code was illiberal, restrictive, authoritarian and brought order. Napoleon then banned trade unions and
introduced The Livret . He also introduced harsher Criminal and Penal codes with new courts,
tribunals for political offenders, arbitrary imprisonment without trial and house arrest. All these
changes gave Napoleon perfect power to remove any opposition, as he had influence of appointment
of judges and the Supreme Court. Napoleon also used the police, which monitored public opinion,
used a network of spies and informants. Napoleon also had his own secret police so that he had
supreme power to remove anyone at all that stood against him. Napoleon also appointed Prefects for
each department which was important as it made a connection between local and central government
and Napoleon made the prefects responsible for propaganda, education and conscription within each
region, so Napoleon could make sure that he kept his support through out France. This repression was
important as Napoleon could prevent any opposition from developing which may threaten his regime,
as many normal people wont do anything if there is no organised opposition to turn

Franco Zefferelli s Romeo and Juliet and Baz Luhrmann s...
The astounding perils of young love has been eloquently captured in the story of Romeo and Juliet.
Franco Zefferelli and Baz Luhrmann are the creators of the two most renowned film adaptations of
William Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet. Zefferelli, the more traditional director, created his Oscar
winning version in 1968. Baz Luhrmann put an abstract, modern twist on Shakespeare s classic and
created the 1996 version that raised millions of dollars in box office sales. Being that these two films
are so different, I have chosen to compare them to one another, using the famed balcony scene as my
focus.
In the Franco Zefferelli adaptation, proceeding the extravagant Capulet party, Romeo walks down a
dark stone path alone with his very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She vocalizes her love and adoration for Romeo, not knowing that every word she speaks falls upon
his ears. Unable to contain his elation about what he has just heard, Romeo leaps from the darkness
below the balcony, abruptly startling Juliet. She retreats towards the doorway of her room, feeling
violated and unsure about Romeo s presence. She appears angry because of their families hatred
towards eachother. The interaction between them is forbidden, so she turns towards the her room,
ready to leave, until she is halted by Romeo s confession. If given the opportunity, he would choose to
deny the Montague name so that he may share his life with her. Surprised, Juliet returns to where
Romeo awaits her.
During this scene, the soft light continually falls upon Juliet s angelic face, yet Romeo predominantly
remains in the darkness, shadowed. This may reference the goodness of the Capulets and the supposed
evilness of the Montagues from Juliet s standpoint. The camera is also pointed up during this scene
when directed towards Juliet, yet pointed down when directed towards Romeo. Zefferelli may have
used these camera angles to show that Juliet is considered someone Romeo admires although he is
considered a lesser man by the Capulet family.
As the scene continues, Juliet explains to Romeo the consequences of them being caught together, and
as she sadly and amorously gazes at him, he hides behind a tree branch to protect himself. Juliet
moves to a dark

Biography of Guy De Maupassant
Guy De Maupassant was born on August 5th, 1850 at the Château de Miromesnil. He was born to his
mother and father Laure Le Poittevin and Gustave de Maupassant. At a young age his parents
divorced, he and his brother lived with his mom for most of his life. Laure was highly involved in his
life, she is the first person to show him the love for classical literature. As he grew up that love grew
stronger and stronger. After he graduated college, he enlisted into the Franco Prussian War. Although
he served, and had other jobs afterwards he was not a very ambitious man. He would rather spend his
time and energy writing than doing his job. Many of his stories took place during the Franco Prussian
War. To me his stories were twisted and depressing. His early life was not exactly the easiest of lives.
When Maupassant was 11, his parents separated, and he was brought up by his mother in the
picturesque coastal town of Étretat (Liukkonen). This affects the way he thinks, therefore the way he
writes his stories. I also believe that the war had a great effect on his writings. During the time of the
war, many aspects of life weren t exactly joyful. I feel that the way the world around him was
depressing, which influenced him to write more depressing stories. His subjects include war, the
Norman peasantry, the bureaucracy, life on the banks of the Seine, the emotional problems of the
different classes, and, ominously, hallucination (Britannica). It could have been a way for

The Similarities And Differences Of Greek And Roman Heroes
Introduction.
Greek mythological heroes, and Roman mythological heroes share similar trades, however are
different in many ways. These similarities and differences can be identified when looking at the means
for the creation of a hero, and a hero s life (birth, challenges, death), and how they become a hero.
Thus will this easay discuses Greek and roman heroes from the Trojan war to identify the similarities
and difference between them.
Important to use primary sources to identify the similarities and difference, thus will the Aenied and
the Odyssey be used.

The fact that both heroes, from Greek and Roman mythology sharechallenegs through out their lives,
the difference comes in at the exstent and cause of their challenges (Kirk, 1970:33)

Odysseus challenges are much greater, but his is selfish, his challenges are due to what he and his
family needs.
Aenues challenges however are based on the greater good, of Rome.
Thus can one conclude a Greek hero, becomes a hero throughout his life, but does not have to die like
a Roman hero for that title.
How they become a hero
Aenus has to die.
Boilling with rage. Cold shivers send Turnus s limbs into spasm. Life flutters off on a groan,
underprotest, down among shadows. Aeneas is wounded in the thigh, but eventually the Trojans
threaten the enemy city. Turnus rushes out to meet Aeneas, who wounds Turnus badly. Aeneas nearly
spares Turnus but, remembering the slain Pallas, slays him instead . Line 950 327

ABSTRACT
The aim of this dissertation is to observe whether female or male students have a similar or different
perspective of the meaning of consent in a sexual context; specifically, on the subject of campus
sexual assault.
INTRODUCTION
In the United States (U.S.), sexual assault on campuses remains to make national headlines, and now
this problem is increasing and occurring in the United Kingdom (U.K.). The term sexual assault varies

Those who are closest to the victims should help the victim on their path of recovery. Although, the
supports from those closest to the victims may play a positive role in the recovery process; however,

EXPLAINING SEXUAL ASSAULT AND RAPE
As reported by, feminist criminologists, their perspective of rape and sexual assault differ from liberal

radical feminists describe rape as a subject to be recognised and understood as a major pillar of

Monroeville Real Life
A Real Life Maycomb
Harper Lee wrote To Kill a Mockingbird about a little Alabama town called Maycomb. What is
interesting is how Maycomb compares a lot to the town that Ms. Lee grew up in, Monroeville,
Alabama. The history of Monroeville and the way it was in the 1930s makes a reader wonder if Ms.
Lee took her hometown and made it the famous small town in the novel. By looking back to the
history of Monroeville s founding, the way it was in the 1930s, the way it almost mirrors Maycomb
and the way it is it today, one can see that Ms. Lee s used her experiences to create one of the most
famous towns in literature.
Monroeville, Alabama is located between Montgomery and Mobile. Before it was developed as a
town in 1831, it was called Burnt Corn Springs. During this time, there was major conflicts between
England, Spain, and Native Americans (Monroeville int). This past showed what Monroeville ... Show

Black Worm
The Lumbriculus Variegatus, or Black Worm, is a species of worm, which belong to the Annelida
family, meaning their bodies are formed of segments instead of jointed legs (Brinkhurst, Gelder,
1991). The Black worm mainly inhabits the European and North American regions, notably in the
shallow habitats, such as the edges of ponds, marshes, or lakes. Black worms diets consist of
vegetation, and underwater microorganisms like algae (Brinkhurst, Gelder, 1991). Black worms are
normally located in the sandy sediments from deeper parts in the water that they inhabit. Black worms
use their head to search for food, while their tales often project upward. The worm does this to break

In a typical segment, the ventral nerve cord has four pairs of segmental nerves that extend laterally
and dorsally around the body wall (Stephenson, 1930). Some of the segment s nerve fibers are
sensitive and quickly detect any stimulation to the worms body (Lesiuk, N. M. and C. D. Drewes,
1999). Other fibers are motor fibers that supply wall muscle cells. The nerve cord controls the worm s
muscles that, in return, cause it to move. Worms use their muscles to crawl through the mud by getting
extra traction from bristles that can be seen from the side of their body. Worms will rapidly pull back
their head or tail if it is touched. Worms that hold their tail up to the water surface may quickly
withdraw it if a shadow suddenly occurs. This is because these worms have tiny simple eyes (called
photoreceptor cells) scattered along their tail segments. In water, worms can also swim for short
distances by making corkscrew movements with their body (zool.iastate.edu, n.d., n.a.).
The Lumbriculus Variegatus, in recent years had been looked over for classroom and laboratory use.
However, these worms present great promise for researcher and student friendly laboratory
experiments. Black worms have been found to be very helpful and informative in experiments
involved with subjects such as: Physiology, Development,

martensitic (or displacive) transformation (MT) and its reverse transformation to the parent austenite
phase; we define the characteristic transformation temperatures as follows; Ms: martensite start

Lying Definition Essay
What defines a lie, and what do people believe about lying? Well, a lie is a false statement made with
deliberate intent to deceive, and certain people think that lying can be effective in different situations.
As many people know, lying is often seen as a horrible trait. In some situations, lying can be used to
benefit on or the other. These four articles, information about when lying appropriate, when to use lie,
and/or how to lie. This point of view justifies how lying can be a benefit to the liar, and to others. To
begin with, there are multiple of ways to lie, and different ways that lying can justified. Lying can be
used for the greater good, or in negative ways. For example, Tim, 18, said the key to being good at
lying is to keep it simple. If you get caught in a lie, he said, tell another one, and then tell another one
to cover that one up, but keep it simple. You keep it simple so you can recap it in your head and keep
your story straight. (Article 4). This shows that lying to people is terrible. However, lying is an option

To others, it is okay if you do it in a right way. The key to lying is not to tell a whole lie or a whole
truth. This shows that when lying you should not tell a whole lie, or a whole truth. When lying, it is
crucial to keep it simple in order to lie the right way without other details. For example, Among the
groups most likely to say lying is sometimes OK: people aged 18 29, college graduates and those with
higher household incomes. People have this idea that lying is bad. (Article 1). This demonstrates that
most people have an idea that lying is bad. One can also see from this view is that some groups justify
lying, and believe that it is okay. The author of this article wants the reader to understand that there are
ways to tell a lie and that lying under some circumstances may be

Importance of Good Precedents for Sustaining Democracies...
There are many different reasons why the partition of India occurred. When Britain oppressed India,
they had a divide and conquer policy that exacerbated the religious and cultural rifts that already
existed in the society. The Muslim League, which believed in the ideology of Pakistan , actively
campaigned to gain more support for the Muslims in India, especially under the guidance of dynamic
leaders like Jinnah. Pakistani leader and founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah believed that this partition
was inevitable since [a] united India would never have worked (Komireddi 2009). He and others
thought that a unified state would only lead to the relegation of Muslims to the fringe of society and,
ultimately, to violence and civil war. The Indian ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The east and west sides of Pakistan were not divided over religion (they were mostly all Muslim),
rather the division was on the basis of culture and language. West Pakistan was Punjabi while East
Pakistan was Bengali. In 1971, there was a major war between India and Pakistan and the east side of
Pakistan split off into what is today called Bangladesh. For the purposes of this essay, we will be
focusing on just Pakistan and India.
The people in both countries have very common and even interlocked backgrounds, so how is it that
these countries have very divergent political atmospheres since partition? India, adapting from the
legacy of British rule and the Government of India Act 1935 for its constitution, kept the idea of
federalism and was also successful in operating its political system within the formal democracy.
Except for 18 months between 1975 and 1977 India maintained its democratic institutions. In the five
decades since partition, there have been twelve legislative elections and many more state assembly
elections. There have been seven peaceful transfers of power between rival political parties at the
central (federal) level (Varshney 1998). Since 1967, the party that ruled in New Delhi has not ruled in
nearly half of the states (Varshney 1998). A fleeting sample of the morning newspapers will show that
the press in India has remained diverse, dynamic, free, and altogether unafraid to

Proper Healthy Lifestyles
Proper healthy lifestyles start at the households and begin with parenting. Our leaders of Guam need
to recognize that diabetes is a growing issue on the island. Diabetes leads to strokes and heart attacks,
which are some of the common cause of death on this island. The main problem is that people on the
island of Guam fail to understand the seriousness of diabetes. It is always fun and nice to see a
supposedly overweight child because to the cultural norm it is acceptable in society.
People fail to realize that we are placing a huge burden on innocent lives who somewhat don t have
any control over their eating habits. We must start to treat the patients on Guam rather than the
statistical numbers. The life expectancy is estimated around 76 years, but it used to be longer in the
olden days. The lifestyle as well as the economy has made a major impact on the people of Guam s
health. Parents are not doing their children a favor by practicing poor eating habits and partaking in
smoking and drinking routines. This issue is definitely obvious and the dialysis treatment centers are
continuing to grow. That is one treatment center to be proud of because it just states that the island of
Guam has an underlying problem with health issues. If the community cannot participate and promote
good health the island will not be the same in 10 years.
Diabetic patients will not have a comfortable lifestyle and they will continue to worsen over time. The
island of Guam is known for a

Persuasive Essay On The Beauty Of Beauty
It s difficult to live in a world with social media, magazines and pop culture. Everything about today s
media culture can drive a person to believe they re just not enough. Women are directly impacted by
the need to look beautiful and captivating like the models on Instagram. Men tend to believe that if
they don t look a certain way and stay in the gym, they won t be desirable to women. The real truth is
that you ve got to learn to love yourself just the way you are. Work on both your internal and external
beauty, but don t obsess. The more you accept yourself, the more confident you ll become. Plus,
confidence is one of the most attractive traits any person can possess. If you want some practical ways
to work on becoming more at peace within your own skin, try these four tips.
1. Highlight the positives.
In a lot of cases, people pick themselves apart and identify with their least desirable traits. It s even
easy to do it to others. Instead of being overly critical, reverse it and highlight the wonderful parts of
yourself. For example, if you have a gorgeous head of hair, start to do your hair in a way that
highlights its beauty. If you have elegantly high cheekbones, highlight them with some blush, bronzer
or highlight. If you re a guy with masculine broad shoulders, wear clean blazers and shirts that
highlight that. It s best to play up your best features and allow them to stand out. Once you do this on

The Principles Centered Leadership By Stephen R. Covey
Introduction
Through careful, calculated progression Principle centered Leadership presents a plan that first
prepares the leader him or herself, then illustrates how to use that leadership to manage an
organization. Author Stephen R. Covey introduces the notion that we as individuals and organizations
need to not only survive but also to thrive in the faces of adversity, change and success. Despite their
efforts to improve, countless companies continue to fail all the while spending millions of dollars,
time and effort every year. Reversing this requires the full measure of individuals creativity, talent, and
energy in the midst of this changing adversity. At the fundamental root of this success is balance;

it distributes through 6,000 km of water mains. Toronto community housing also provides citizens
with affordable housing that they might not have been able to afford.
Our futuristic elements are moving sidewalks and buses that hover using maglev technology. Our
cities will benefit from the moving sidewalks because they will enable people to get around the city
quickly. The hover buses will help people get around when it gets too cold for the moving sidewalks.

Socialization can be especially difficult because they prefer being around people of other generations.
Normally transportation is easy, but older people are having their driving licenses taken away by the
city. Using alternate transportation systems, such as buses, may also prove difficult. They aren t
always aware where the stations are or where they lead, especially if they ve driven themselves all
their life. When seniors are restricted to their homes, they can only socialize with those around them,
and even so, most of the residents stay in their room and exclude themselves from others. They also
may not have the money for bus systems, seeing as they often cost money. Because relatives may live
far away, they may not be able to

Marketing Strategy Of Coca Cola
The story of one of the biggest marketing blunders in history, is a story of false hubris, desperation,
and driving ambition. Made by one of the largest corporations in the world. The creators of a product
on the forefront of the American consciousness. As intertwined into American culture as baseball,
apple pie, and Thanksgiving dinner. That product of course was Coca Cola, the formula of which had
remained unchanged close to 100 years. Since its creation by Atlanta pharmacist John Pemberton in
1885 as a topical remedy marketed as a cure from ailments such as stomach pains, headaches, and
even impotence, Coca Cola had grown into the number one drink in America.
In 1888 Coca Cola was sold to Asa Candler whose innovative and aggressive marketing tactics would
kick start Coca Cola on its path of global domination. From the start rival Pepsi Cola established itself
as a formidable number two in the soft drink market. Founded in 1893 Pepsi would continue to play
second fiddle to Coke for over sixty years. Coca Colas marketing strategy was simple yet genius.
Make Cokes presence known everywhere in America. Ensure that advertisements are placed in every
city and every town, and guarantee that no matter where you go, a cold and refreshing Coke beverage
was available within arm s reach. By doing this the Coca Cola Corporation made their product a part
of the American identity.
With the advent of World War 2, company executives saw their chance to introduce Coke to the world.

Examples Of Sanitize In Spotlight
In Spotlight, the filmmakers include a scene where one of the Boston Globe reporters, Sacha Pfeiffer,
is interviewing Joe, one of the survivors. Joe tells Sacha about his first visit to Father Shanley s house,
and how Father Shanley the two play strip poker. Joe says, Of course I lost. And things went on from
there. Sacha asks, What happened specifically? and Joe replies Specifically, he molested me. Sacha
continues, and says, Joe, I think the language here is going to be very important. We can t sanitize this,
just saying molest isn t enough. People need to know what actually happened. I will consider the word
sanitize in this paper, and why the filmmakers chose to use this word and film the scene like they did.

This definition is, to render more acceptable, clean up, as by the removal of undesirable, improper or
confidential material. This second definition is different then the more technical and medical health
related connotation of the first definition, but it makes Sacha s use of the word sanitize seem
especially fitting. Sacha and the Spotlight team have been fighting to expose confidential materials,
seen in their struggle to get the documents unsealed. When Mike gets a tip from Garabedian that the
14 most damning docs are already unsealed because of his public motion to oppose another lawyer s
motion, Garabedian tells Mike the documents are not in the courthouse, where they should be because
the Church doesn t want them to be found. So they are not there. This scene between Mike and
Garabedian highlights what Sacha is doing by saying they cannot sanitize the language. The Church in
the Mike and Garabedian scene has in a way sanitized the record by either of the two definitions they
have cleaned it, expunged it, and omitted unsavory information; in contrast, Sacha does not want to
sanitize , clean up, expunge or omit the language of what happened to Joe. This is why she encourages
him to not use euphemisms or tidier language for his

Oliver Twist
How does Charles Dickens represent the crimes and criminals in the novel Oliver Twist ?
Introduction
In the novel Oliver Twist, Dickens was trying to show that the Victorian viewpoint of crime was
wrong. His novel shows that many criminals were forced to be one(criminal) rather than being born as
one. Dickens includes the condition of the workhouses which were very basic and the work was hard
and unforgiving, he described this to set the scene of how young children coped when they were alone
in the world. He presents some criminals as innocent victims that have been pulled into a life of crime
through desperation and despair such as Oliver and Nancy, however ... Show more content on

He is trying to show that although most criminals shouldn t fit into the stereotype some do and people
should be wary of them. Bill Sikes is portrayed as the real villain in Oliver Twist, he is a thuggish
criminal who is violent and often takes advantage of others, and he chooses his life of crime and
enjoys it. Like Fagin, Sikes is shows as an animal or something that is evil and corrupted. Sikes is
often described with a heaving chest and savage resolution . This shows characteristics of an animal
with a savage nature, the language indicates that Dickens is trying to show the fact that Bill is not only
a criminal he is a mean criminal who has no compassion or thoughts for anyone. In comparison he
thinks about himself a lot, and concentrates on not getting caught rather than what he is actually doing.
When Sikes is murdering Nancy, Dickens uses vocabulary such as dragged, hurled, and struggled;
these words imply anger and brutality. Sikes uses his violence to take control of people and this
amplifies the Victorian view of a criminal. In Sikes character Dickens is trying to suggest that there
are some vicious and dangerous criminal in London that people should be wary of. Sikes is a leader of
the criminal underworld and is helping to trap innocent and naïve young

The Annual Women And Fair Trade Festival Essay
On a crisp morning this past fall, cooperatives from around the world set up shop in an Austin, Texas,
church for the annual Women and Fair Trade Festival. While most of the vendors were veterans of
collective organizing, one group of single immigrant mothers used the festival to debut their food
cooperative, Cooperativa Posada.
Three Mexican women Silvia, Elideth, and Erika and a Guatemalan woman named Hilda spent a near
sleepless night preparing dozens of their distinct regional varieties of tamales, some wrapped in corn
husks and others in moist banana leaves. Nebat, the lone Ethiopian member of the cooperative,
prepared some luscious, dark, traditional Ethiopian coffee by roasting the beans on a metal plate over
an open flame, then grinding them by hand.
The products of their labor were not only nourishment for the festival attendees (who lined up for a
taste), but also an attempt to raise the awareness and donations needed for their cooperative to
succeed. On a broader level, the tamales and coffee represented the mothers efforts to create an
opportunity for self sufficiency, to foster collective economic empowerment, and to forge a path
forward for themselves and their families.
All the Cooperativa Posada members currently live or have lived at Posada Esperanza in Austin, a
shelter for homeless immigrant mothers and their children. The shelter houses 16 families, most of
whom are undocumented immigrants or asylum seekers from Latin America and Africa who have fled

Traumatic Human Development In The Movie Boyz N The Hood
The movie Boyz N the Hood is an illustration of how a group of early adolescents lives was affected
negatively due to the environment they lived in. These adolescents lived in an environment where
drugs, gangs, and shootings were the center of their community. Living in a predominantly African
American community these adolescents were faced with many misfortunes. Ricky one of the
adolescent characters I have decided to evaluate for this particular paper was faced with adversity.
Ricky as a character displayed the effects of understanding the traumatic human development and
normal human development. Traumatic human development is when one is open to danger and
violence. One can be open to traumatic development directly or indirectly on a centered foundation.
Ricky environment exposed him negativity. A majority of the negativity that Ricky is exposed to is
gun violence, gangs, drugs and other negativity as well. Due to his environment being looked down
upon and him being an African American male from a certain area of Los Angeles town he was
viewed upon negatively by society. For instance, a scene from the movie dictates Tre and Ricky is
pulled over by cops. The cops, one African American the main cop posed Tre and Ricky as a threat to
society. Being harassed by the cop made Tre and Ricky feel as though they had no place in of
belonging in that part of Los Angeles town. By Ricky being an African American male it was difficult
enough for him to be successful in his environment. Ricky was not as fortunate to have the resources
he needed. He was limited to many resources but, his limitation did not interfere with him having
normal development. The theories that can mainly be relative to this movie, as well as the character
Ricky, are person in environment, systems theory, and cultural theory (Newman and Newman 2012).
The first theory that can be associated with character Ricky is the person in environment theory.
Person in environment theory had some effects on Ricky. Ricky s environment consisted of drugs,
gangs, and even murders. His environment did not shape who Ricky was. His environment was his
motivation to escape. Unlike his brother Doughboy whom had gotten comfortable in the environment
of his

Essay On Sports History
Thanks to a wild and crazy night at Madison Square Garden Saturday night, the UFC has three new
champions. Some tagged UFC 217 as the best card of the year, and the event certainly lived up to the
hype. The card gave people what they want to see out of a high priced event: finishes. Some were
more unexpected than others, but the event was quite a spectacle and now opens a forum of many
questions heading into 2018. In the first of the three title fights, and perhaps the most shocking, Rose
Namajunas claimed the women s strawweight title by making longtime champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk
tap due to strikes in the first round. Namajunas landed a picture perfect overhand right, dropping
Jedrzejczyk, which led to the strikes on the ground that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The kid s tough, he hits hard. You can condition your chin. I got caught with a big right but I bounced
right back. Dillashaw previously held the title from May 2014, when he defeated Renan Barao, until
January 2016, when he lost a split decision to Dominick Cruz, who then lost the title to Garbrandt.
The win was the seventh in eight fights for the new champ. As for what s next for Dillashaw, he wants
to go for a second belt against flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson. Demetrious Johnson, I m
coming for you, Dillashaw said. You ve got that record that s fake, you dodged me, and I m coming
for that belt and you know it. In the main event, Georges St Pierre cemented his legacy and reminded
everyone that he s on a short list of greatest UFC fighters of all time. The former, longtime UFC
welterweight champion returned to the Octagon for the first time in four years and captured a
tremendous upset over Michael Bisping to win the UFC middleweight title. St Pierre became just the
fourth fighter in UFC history to hold championships in two different weight classes after submitting
Bisping in the third round. I don t have a word in my mouth right now, St Pierre said after earning his
13th consecutive victory. It s a dream come true, guys. Thank you for the support, it s my dream come
true. St Pierre landed a heavy left hook that dropped Bisping, leading to the finish. GSP landed elbows
that forced Bisping to scramble

  • 2. The Jewelry, By Guy De Maupassant And O Connor When contemplating whether a work of literature is worth reading, most readers look at the back cover of the book to read a short summary. Some critics look for tone and interesting plot twists, but the common reader looks for a purpose or lesson. Sure, powerful words and phrases contribute, but without the anticipation that one will gain knowledge from the story, it will be put right back on the bookshelf. Long novels with a back cover have hundreds of pages to reveal themes. However, short stories do not have nearly as much time to display a theme. In Guy de Maupassant s The Jewelry, the main character, Lantin sees and experiences change through his life after his wife passes away. In Flannery O Connor s A Good Man is Hard to find, the grandmother s actions cost an entire family s life. Both stories contains a similar theme but in different ways. Despite their short time frames, Maupassant and O Connor both reveal a similar didactic medium nobody is perfect. Maupassant s short story begins with a description of a young girl who represents the perfect woman. Her gentle nature and manners attracted all of the men in the story. However, in The Jewelry , he states that ...she got into the habit of suspending in her pretty ears two big cut pebbles, fashioned in imitation of diamonds... (Maupassant 52). When first reading this, one would not find these as faults but instead assume that the woman is down to earth for taking such pride in false jewelry. However, when she ... • 3. Mexico Research Paper Mexico is a large country that was reborn as a result of the European colonization of the Americas. Although colonial influence largely reshaped Mexico, its Native American roots have remained a prominent element of its culture. Mexico s history marks the origin of several advanced Amerindian civilizations, including the Olmec, Toltec, Teotihuacan, Zapotec, Maya, and Aztec (cia.gov). It was conquered and colonized by Spain in the early 16th century, and administered as the Viceroyalty of New Spain for three centuries. After 300 years of Spanish rule; Mexico achieved independence early in the 19th century (history.com, 2017). Key Cultural Elements The large majority of Mexico s population consists of mestizos , an ethnicity consisting in the mix of European and Amerindian populations. The mestizo population quickly replaced the native Amerindians during, and following the years of the Spanish colonization, largely due in part to the mass casualties the natives suffered during Spain s occupation. Today, Mexico s ethnic groups are estimated to be: 62% mestizo (Amerindian Spanish), 21% predominantly Amerindian natives, 7% Amerindians, and 10% other (mostly European), according to a census published in 2012 (cia.gov). Most of the population in Mexico can be found congregating on its bigger cities, particularly the ones found in the middle of the country between the states of Jalisco and Veracruz. Additionally; an estimate of a quarter of the population lives in and around Mexico City. The colonization also established Catholicism as the mandatory religion of the newly acquired Spanish territory. The Spanish Inquisitions aggressive action against what they considered to be heathen beliefs, effectively eradicated the indigenous religions. Today, Catholicism ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

By adopting elements of UCC, the Onling gaming community web portal can provide all the information that users need, without forcing them to research external information sites, therefore becoming far more self serving and robust. Web Portal Design Web portals in the past were seen primarily as gateways as was stated earlier, thereby limiting the creative control administrators could have over the design of the web site. Due to the shift in functionality of web portals however, as well as the added value of UCC, it has become increasingly challenging to design web sites where users can find exactly what they are looking for (Fang, et al, 2004). Prominent gaming portals IGN (Fox Media, 1996), and Gamespot (Deemer, et al, 1996), display the attributes of good web design, limiting the amount of useless hyperlinks, and utilises taxonomy for articles to make them easier for users to access the information they need. Gamespot also allows for a degree of personalisation within the site allowing users to select which background and forum theme they wish to use, whose selection will be stored with the user account information, and this personalisation can help the users feel connected to the portal, thereby ensuring their continued presence (Bellas, et al, 2004). • 5. Euripides Electra s Dilemma As with much of classical literature, the Ancient Greek tragedy Electra by Euripides presents a dilemma to the audience. In this play, the dilemma is exclusive to the audience; although it is presented to the characters in the play, these characters do not hesitate with their plans. This age old dilemma of kill or no kill is represented in Electra, giving the audience a choice to either sympathize with the victim, Clytemnestra, or the main character, Electra. In Electra, Orestes and Electra, the children of Clytemnestra, seek revenge on their mother. The two characters seek revenge because Clytemnestra murdered her husband, their father, after he sacrificed his daughter Iphigenia. Agamemnon sacrificed Iphigenia at the beginning of the Trojan ... Together, Electra and Orestes create a plan to lure Clytemnestra into Electra s home and then murder her. Just before Electra kills her mother, Clytemnestra, in an attempt to sway Electra away from killing her, explains her reasons why she murdered Agamemnon: But he lured my daughter with the hope of marriage to/ Achilles and went off taking her from home to Aulis where/ the fleet was held and there he stretched her over the sacrificial/ altar and slashed the white throat of Iphigenia (Euripides 109). It is at this point that the dilemma is presented to the audience of the play. Clytemnestra s explanation presents a dilemma to the audience because the play does not provide enough background information for the audience to decide whether Electra and Orestes actions are morally correct. As Clytemnestra gives her explanation as to why she killed Agamemnon, the audience has a choice of either believing her or chalking up her story to just be an attempt at living. Others will just tell their children that having an animal takes responsibility. Whether it is one or the other, we still have that thought in our head. In this paper, I want to look at one place where a child or parents can get that chance to make that dream of having a pet at home a reality. I welcome you to the humane society of San Diego. I often said to myself, this is where are the stray animals go. Not true, when you take a look some maybe stray but others come from a home that just plain got tired of them. Let me show you the journey of what the humane society of San Diego can do when it comes to looking at that pet to come home with you. History of the San Diego Human Society As we all know, we must look first at the past of the humane society. San Diego is just one of many that are around and offer so many. The question is, where did they get there beginnings from? Well lets go back to March of 1880, when San Diego was still in it s beginning phases of growing. This was the start of the San Diego humane society. Looking that far back, you can see that even than the importance of animals were looked at. It was mainly based on the cotton industry and subsequently many of the inventions that came out of this period were mainly for producing and manufacturing cotton. Another stage of the Industrial Revolution was based on inventions. This is when most of the luxury goods were produced for the public. The Industrial Revolution is seen by scholars, as noted in A History of Western Society, as basically moderate and evolutionary. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus demand for goods within the country complemented the demand from the colonies. This was very important because this raised the standard of living for the average families. It was like giving a cookie to a child, the child would always want another one. As soon as the families experienced the better life they will always strive to achieve that same quality of life. There were many important developments to the cotton industry that came about due to the Industrial Revolution. The problem the cotton industry had was due to inadequate machinery or the lack of machinery. Clothes and other things that came from the cotton industry were being produced way too slowly and the price of the material was way too expensive for the average family. The first problem was that yarn was not being fed fast enough to the weaver, but in 1769, two new inventions solved the problem, the spinning jenny and the water powered frame, both of which provided yarn faster. Edmund Cartwright, who invented the power loom, combined the machine s characteristics and purposes into one machine in 1800. Cleaning cotton was also a tedious and time consuming job, so in 1793, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, which could clean cotton 50 times faster than the previous outdated methods. Many people would actually walk around in filthy garments all of their lives but because of the new inventions they could afford to buy undergarments. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dylan Thomas tells his poem in a much more elaborate manner to try a get across an idea that he could not do before. Childhood is often referred to by many writers as the happiest times of your life. Seamus Heaney s and Dylan Thomas s poems show that they believe in that principle. However, DH Lawrence s poems show that he did not have a happy childhood and he makes that point abundantly clear. In Death of a Naturalist , Heaney shows that he once had a love of nature but, after one incident, he lost that love forever. The structure of the poem shows his change of opinion: the first verse uses adjectives and nice images that infer that the subject he is talking about is one that he likes; but the style of language changes in the second verse where the vocabulary used shows the reader that the poet now does not like his poem subject at all. Memorialization of any sort can be a tedious process, but those regarding Holocaust remembrance were particularly challenging given the surrounding social and political controversies that ensued. This is primarily seen through the issue of representation, which consistently played a key role in the creation of both the Holocaust museum in Washington D.C., and the Dachau concentration camp memorial. While the Dachau memorial s conception stages, the designers were contemplating which victim groups to include. For instance, the mayor of Dachau stated, Please do not make the mistake of thinking that only heroes died in Dachau. Many inmates were...there because they illegally opposed the regime of the day....You have to remember there were many criminals and homosexuals in Dachau. Do we want a memorial to such people? (Harold Maruse, Dachau, 151). With this quote, the mayor implies that the memorial will only be dedicated to those he deems worthy of representation. Likewise, the White House officials orchestrating the American Holocaust Museum also debated a similar notion regarding the inclusion of ethic victim groups other than the Jews. However, Wiesel and other Holocaust survivors believed that commemorating non Jews was an ...obscene incursion into the boundaries of Holocaust memory by those whose country men had persecuted survivors (Edward T. • 13. The Controversy Of Capital Punishment The Controversy of Capital Punishment Capital punishment, or the death penalty, is a form of punishment that has been used as far back as the Colonial Era in America. Although it has been around for the entirety of American history, most of the scrutiny and controversy involving capital punishment arose in the 1972 Supreme Court Case of Furman v. Georgia, in which it was abolished, but quickly returned in 1977. It is evident that many citizens have ambivalent stances on capital punishment; some believing it is necessary form of punishment while others believe that the death penalty is a violation of the Eighth Amendment. Although capital punishment has been used throughout history and is seen by many as a form of justified punishment, there are many reasons in favor of ending the death penalty completely. Capital punishment is an unnecessary evil that should be found unconstitutional because of it is not practical, it is corrupt, and it is unable to deter further homicides from being committed. A brief history explaining the verdicts made by the Supreme Court regarding capital punishment in American history needs to be made to understand why capital punishment has become such a national issue in contemporary America. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It could be hard for stakeholders to understand risks if there is no clear documentation of particular risks. For risk management is to be effective, it has to be measured, reviewed and monitored (ISO AU/NZS 31000:2009, pp 14). This could also be very difficult without a good understanding of each particular risk. It is important for organisations to have a good understanding of their risks because they are often held liable for the actions of their employees (Fadun 2013). If risks are not well documented, it would be very difficult for different employees as well as management to all have the same understanding of the risks that face the organisation. If risks are not understood, they cannot effectively be prepared for or monitored. Risk disclosure reduces uncertainty in investors, because it creates trusts between investors and the organisation (Ismail, Rahman Ahmad 2013). If risks are not effectively disclosed and a risk eventuates as a result of inadequate planning, it can affect the financial outcome of an organisation, because investors will no longer trust them (Ismail, Rahman Ahmad 2013). Risk disclosure can also improve the quality of strategic planning (Ismail, Rahman Ahmad 2013). If an organisation has to disclose a risk they may be more likely to plan more effectively for it, because they have acknowledged that it could be an issue. A deep, gnawing feeling of being unsettled seated itself within his gut and bit at him incessantly that afternoon, when the bleached seas of fog finally began rolling back and exposing the ghostly monoliths of steel and glass, complimented by the vaguely red bridge on the edge of the city that stretched into the thicket of mist like a pathway to eternal salvation. San Francisco had always been a haunted city; a city of tragic fires, earthquakes, and a feverish lust for gold, spurred on by the constant hum that seemed to make up the very fabric of the land. This may reference the goodness of the Capulets and the supposed evilness of the Montagues from Juliet s standpoint. The camera is also pointed up during this scene when directed towards Juliet, yet pointed down when directed towards Romeo. Zefferelli may have used these camera angles to show that Juliet is considered someone Romeo admires although he is considered a lesser man by the Capulet family. After he graduated college, he enlisted into the Franco Prussian War. Although he served, and had other jobs afterwards he was not a very ambitious man. He would rather spend his time and energy writing than doing his job. Many of his stories took place during the Franco Prussian War. To me his stories were twisted and depressing. His early life was not exactly the easiest of lives. When Maupassant was 11, his parents separated, and he was brought up by his mother in the picturesque coastal town of Étretat (Liukkonen). This affects the way he thinks, therefore the way he writes his stories. I also believe that the war had a great effect on his writings. During the time of the war, many aspects of life weren t exactly joyful. I feel that the way the world around him was depressing, which influenced him to write more depressing stories. Some of the segment s nerve fibers are sensitive and quickly detect any stimulation to the worms body (Lesiuk, N. M. and C. D. Drewes, 1999). Other fibers are motor fibers that supply wall muscle cells. The nerve cord controls the worm s muscles that, in return, cause it to move. Worms use their muscles to crawl through the mud by getting extra traction from bristles that can be seen from the side of their body. Worms will rapidly pull back their head or tail if it is touched. Worms that hold their tail up to the water surface may quickly withdraw it if a shadow suddenly occurs. Diabetes leads to strokes and heart attacks, which are some of the common cause of death on this island. The main problem is that people on the island of Guam fail to understand the seriousness of diabetes. It is always fun and nice to see a supposedly overweight child because to the cultural norm it is acceptable in society. People fail to realize that we are placing a huge burden on innocent lives who somewhat don t have any control over their eating habits. We must start to treat the patients on Guam rather than the statistical numbers. The life expectancy is estimated around 76 years, but it used to be longer in the olden days. The lifestyle as well as the economy has made a major impact on the people of Guam s health. Parents are not doing their children a favor by practicing poor eating habits and partaking in smoking and drinking routines. Work on both your internal and external beauty, but don t obsess. The more you accept yourself, the more confident you ll become. Plus, confidence is one of the most attractive traits any person can possess. If you want some practical ways to work on becoming more at peace within your own skin, try these four tips. 1. Highlight the positives. In a lot of cases, people pick themselves apart and identify with their least desirable traits. It s even easy to do it to others. Instead of being overly critical, reverse it and highlight the wonderful parts of yourself. For example, if you have a gorgeous head of hair, start to do your hair in a way that highlights its beauty. If you have elegantly high cheekbones, highlight them with some blush, bronzer or highlight. If you re a guy with masculine broad shoulders, wear clean blazers and shirts that highlight that. Made by one of the largest corporations in the world. The creators of a product on the forefront of the American consciousness. As intertwined into American culture as baseball, apple pie, and Thanksgiving dinner. That product of course was Coca Cola, the formula of which had remained unchanged close to 100 years. In 1888 Coca Cola was sold to Asa Candler whose innovative and aggressive marketing tactics would kick start Coca Cola on its path of global domination. From the start rival Pepsi Cola established itself as a formidable number two in the soft drink market. Founded in 1893 Pepsi would continue to play second fiddle to Coke for over sixty years. Coca Colas marketing strategy was simple yet genius. Make Cokes presence known everywhere in America. Ensure that advertisements are placed in every city and every town, and guarantee that no matter where you go, a cold and refreshing Coke beverage was available within arm s reach. • 46. Oliver Twist Essay English Coursework Oliver Twist How does Charles Dickens represent the crimes and criminals in the novel Oliver Twist ? Introduction In the novel Oliver Twist, Dickens was trying to show that the Victorian viewpoint of crime was wrong. His novel shows that many criminals were forced to be one(criminal) rather than being born as one. Dickens includes the condition of the workhouses which were very basic and the work was hard and unforgiving, he described this to set the scene of how young children coped when they were alone in the world. He presents some criminals as innocent victims that have been pulled into a life of crime through desperation and despair such as Oliver and Nancy, however ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He is trying to show that although most criminals shouldn t fit into the stereotype some do and people should be wary of them. Bill Sikes is portrayed as the real villain in Oliver Twist, he is a thuggish criminal who is violent and often takes advantage of others, and he chooses his life of crime and enjoys it. Like Fagin, Sikes is shows as an animal or something that is evil and corrupted. Sikes is often described with a heaving chest and savage resolution . This shows characteristics of an animal with a savage nature, the language indicates that Dickens is trying to show the fact that Bill is not only a criminal he is a mean criminal who has no compassion or thoughts for anyone. In comparison he thinks about himself a lot, and concentrates on not getting caught rather than what he is actually doing. When Sikes is murdering Nancy, Dickens uses vocabulary such as dragged, hurled, and struggled; these words imply anger and brutality. Sikes uses his violence to take control of people and this amplifies the Victorian view of a criminal. In Sikes character Dickens is trying to suggest that there are some vicious and dangerous criminal in London that people should be wary of. • 47. The Annual Women And Fair Trade Festival Essay On a crisp morning this past fall, cooperatives from around the world set up shop in an Austin, Texas, church for the annual Women and Fair Trade Festival. While most of the vendors were veterans of collective organizing, one group of single immigrant mothers used the festival to debut their food cooperative, Cooperativa Posada. Three Mexican women Silvia, Elideth, and Erika and a Guatemalan woman named Hilda spent a near sleepless night preparing dozens of their distinct regional varieties of tamales, some wrapped in corn husks and others in moist banana leaves. Nebat, the lone Ethiopian member of the cooperative, prepared some luscious, dark, traditional Ethiopian coffee by roasting the beans on a metal plate over an open flame, then grinding them by hand. The products of their labor were not only nourishment for the festival attendees (who lined up for a taste), but also an attempt to raise the awareness and donations needed for their cooperative to succeed. On a broader level, the tamales and coffee represented the mothers efforts to create an opportunity for self sufficiency, to foster collective economic empowerment, and to forge a path forward for themselves and their families. All the Cooperativa Posada members currently live or have lived at Posada Esperanza in Austin, a shelter for homeless immigrant mothers and their children. • 48. Traumatic Human Development In The Movie Boyz N The Hood The movie Boyz N the Hood is an illustration of how a group of early adolescents lives was affected negatively due to the environment they lived in. These adolescents lived in an environment where drugs, gangs, and shootings were the center of their community. Living in a predominantly African American community these adolescents were faced with many misfortunes. Ricky one of the adolescent characters I have decided to evaluate for this particular paper was faced with adversity. Ricky as a character displayed the effects of understanding the traumatic human development and normal human development. Traumatic human development is when one is open to danger and violence. One can be open to traumatic development directly or indirectly on a centered foundation. Ricky environment exposed him negativity. A majority of the negativity that Ricky is exposed to is gun violence, gangs, drugs and other negativity as well. Due to his environment being looked down upon and him being an African American male from a certain area of Los Angeles town he was viewed upon negatively by society. For instance, a scene from the movie dictates Tre and Ricky is pulled over by cops. The cops, one African American the main cop posed Tre and Ricky as a threat to society. Being harassed by the cop made Tre and Ricky feel as though they had no place in of belonging in that part of Los Angeles town. By Ricky being an African American male it was difficult enough for him to be successful in his environment. Ricky was not as fortunate to have the resources he needed. He was limited to many resources but, his limitation did not interfere with him having normal development. The theories that can mainly be relative to this movie, as well as the character Ricky, are person in environment, systems theory, and cultural theory (Newman and Newman 2012). The first theory that can be associated with character Ricky is the person in environment theory. Person in environment theory had some effects on Ricky. Ricky s environment consisted of drugs, gangs, and even murders. His environment did not shape who Ricky was. His environment was his motivation to escape.
