I was proud of myself for not having any lapses this period. I was also proud that my attitude was
exceptionally improved from the Reduction Period. I was less irritable about not having sugar

Dorothy Allison s essay, Panacea, recalls the fond childhood memories about her favorite dish,
gravy. Allison uses vivid imagery to cook up a warm feeling about family meals to those who
may be a poor family or a young mother. Appeal to the senses shows this warm feeling, along with
a peaceful diction.
Before she begins the essay with the imagery, Allison adopts a persona of a mother who is formerly
poor as a child, and now middle class with a large family. This is when she describes her past in an
anecdote, and when she moves to describe cooking for her son and family. Her persona responds
well to her intended audience, who may be poor families experiencing rough times, or young
mothers in need of something to relate to.

Allison uses peaceful words to build upon the dominant effect. Words such as simplest, tastiest,
memory laden, and wonderful. Wonderful is significant, because it occurs three times in the
essay. She uses it to describe Christmas, when she smells her duck gravy, and when Wolf exclaims
that the gravy is wonderful. The use of wonderful may be to signify a valuable time to Allison, her
failed Christmas goose, the scent of her perfect gravy, and the satisfying time when her son finally
appreciates her gravy. These words add to the intention of warmth using content words by showing,
through speech, the peace she feels in the time the essay takes place.
Allison does not simply say that the duck gravy tasted delicious, she describes it to show the
reader that it is indeed wonderful. She discusses the process of cooking the gravy, and talks
about each ingredient and how it appeals to all the senses. Paragraph two on page 164 is
basically a paragraph saying that her gravy is finally reminiscent of her mother s, which is
delicious according to Allison. She uses rhetorical devices as well. She asks a rhetorical question
after Wolf rejects her gravy. How could my child not like my gravy? This is saying that she does

illustrating that one does not need evidence to be confident about a given claim. In this way,
Shanley illustrates through the concept of doubt that a person can be right about a given suspicion

The significance behind certainty versus doubt in Doubt has to do with the characterization of
both Sister James and Sister Aloysius. The characters stance on certainty versus doubt divides
the characters personalities. Sister Aloysius has a confident and strong willed character

March 29, 1998 was just another typical day for headline news in Sioux Falls. The Argus Leader
was filled with your everyday politics, sports, entertainment, weather, and life news. Eight inmates
serving life sentence in the South Dakota State Penitentiary met to discuss better living conditions
for all prisoners (Steen). On a more positive note, the annual Sioux Empire water festival was held
at the University of Sioux Falls. Around 2,200 fourth graders, from surrounding communities,
gather to learn more about the abundance of their natural resources, and how to preserve them.
Thirty booths were set up at the site displaying how to make snow, how to snorkel, and how to
make bubbles the size of humans (Olson). As far as youth sports, nothing was more popular than
the tri state basketball tournament held every year in Sioux Falls. The event attracted over 2,900
