Comparison Between Enron And Arthur Anderson
Enron and Arthur Anderson were both giants in their own industry. Enron, a Texas based company in
the energy trading business, was expanding rapidly in both domestic and global markets. Arthur
Anderson, LLC. (Anderson), based out of Chicago, was well established as one of the big five
accounting firms. But the means by which they achieved this status became questionable and
eventually contributed to their demise. Enron used what if often referred to as creative accounting
methods, this resulted in them posting record breaking earnings. Anderson, who earned substantial
audit and consultation fees from Enron, failed to comply with the auditing standards required in their
line of work. Investigations and reports have resulted in finger ... Show more content on

As competition increased and the economy started to plunge in the early 2000s, Enron struggled to
maintain their profit margins. Executives determined that in order to keep their debt ratio low, they
would need to transfer debt from their balance sheet. Reducing hard assets while earning increasing
paper profits served to increase Enron s return on assets (ROA) and reduce its debt to total assets ratio,
making the company more attractive to credit rating agencies and investors (Thomas, 2002).
Executives developed Structured Financing and Special Purpose Entities (SPE), which they used to
transfer the majority of Enron s debt to the SPEs. Enron also failed to appropriately disclose
information regarding the related party transactions in the notes to the financial statements.Andersen
performed audit work for Enron and rendered an unqualified opinion of their financial statements
while this activity occurred. The seriousness and amount of misstatement has led some to believe that
Andersen must have known what was going on inside Enron, but decided to overlook it. Assets and
equities were overstated by over $1.2 billion, which can clearly be considered a material amount
(Cunningham Harris, 2006). These are a few of several practices that spiraled out of control in an
effort to meet forecasted quarterly earnings. As competition grew against the energy giant and their

How Does Brush Use Literary Devices In The Birthday Party
A birthday party regarding the age is always a nice gesture to have, and a great way to celebrate a
birthday. A simple birthday cake can be really meaningful to a person on their birthday. In the short
story The Birthday Party by Katharine Brush, however she demonstrates that a relationship that does
not take consideration and does not appreciate what their partner does for them, is a relationship that is
not worth it. She gets this message across, using literary devices such as imagery, alliteration, and
symbolism. Imagery is a source used for the author to get her point across because we get to see a
visual in our minds. For example when Brush is describing the characters, she states, The man had a

A Brief Note On Economic And Financial Stressors
D. Economic and Financial Stressors
One of the many reasons why people work is to make money. As the cost of living increases, people
need to keep up with their earning. Since it is not always possible to keep earning more through
promotion, people decide to get second or third jobs in their free time to make extra money to support
their life and family. Even though making extra money is beneficial to everyone, people give up on
their free time, take more responsibility, and spend more energy. As a result, their stress level increases
exponentially. In order to earn more money in the short term, people end up getting more stressed
because it is accumulated in the long term (Matteson Ivanceivch, 1987, 40).
E. Situational Constraints
Situational constraints occur when an employee`s environment inhibits him/her from performing
properly. Important support personnel are usually fired first in case of budget cuts. Even though their
job may seem unimportant at first, they are crucial to the workplace. For instance, there could be
many information available for a person to finish his/her job; however, having a technical difficulty
and not having anyone to fix this issue would cause time loss. Another example is inadequate training.
If an employee does not receive a proper training, he/she will automatically be constrained because of
lack of knowledge or skills. Furthermore, the poorly trained employee will seek out for help all the
time and other people will get involved in the

What Is Brusov Pecking Order Theory
Modigliani and Miller (1958) state that if the capital market is perfect, the strategies will not affect the
firm s value. However, later they argue that the value of the firm can be increased by changing its
capital structure. It is because of the tax shield advantage from debts. Thus, the firm can increase its
market value by increasing in the use of debt. However, they have further elaborated that the firm is
not necessarily to maximize its debt in to get the greatest tax advantage.
Furthermore, they did mention that internal funds are cheaper in certain circumstances and there are
more options for firm to choose, since it is very hard to justify the real world financial strategy
problem with a formula (Modigliani and Miller, 1963). Brusov, ... Show more content on

Thus, leverage seems unnecessary (Titman Wessels, 1988). When more factors like market conditions
and behavior of investors are considered, the correlation between leverage of the firm and its
profitability become more indirect. This leads to varies in results. Pecking order theory is suitable for
well establish and stable firms, since these firms have excess internal funds such as retained earnings.
Firms can still use debt or equity to finance, when the firms do not have sufficient internal funds. CCI
should use pecking order theory to enter Malaysia market, because CCI is profitable it should consider

Paper Towel Absorbency
| Paper Towel Absorbency | INT Task 3 Mardy Hodge Wilson | | | | | Paper towels were introduced for
kitchen use in 1931 by the Scott Company and are one of the most versatile paper products. They are
made from wood pulp which is then bleached to make them white. Resin is added to increase the
paper s strength and the implicated water is then removed, allowing the fibers to bond and form paper
sheets. Two layers are combined to create moisture absorbing air pockets, and shapes are pressed into
the paper to further improve absorbency. Some additional steps used to increase absorbency are
creping and embossing. Creping gives the towel extra flexibility and creates more openings for liquid

Viva was more absorbent that the local store brand to determine if the extra cost was worth it. My
findings will help other consumers make a decision based on absorbency as to which paper towel to
purchase. If I were to conduct this experiment again I would use more test groups. I would use

The Law And Its Effect On Society
The law is something many people would associate as serious and unamusing. Mortimer Zuckerman
would fall into that category. In fact, Zuckerman felt so strongly about this matter that he decided law
was the exact opposite of sex; even when it was good, it was lousy. Zuckerman remains the Chief
Executive Officer of Boston Properties, worth over two and a half billion U.S. dollars. A gentleman of
such high status could not make such an assertion without some sort of education regarding the matter
at hand. The law is exactly the opposite of sex. The law is not completed by any living thing, remains
alone, is completely silent, fully clothed, utterly boring and does not engage nor stimulate the brain.
The word law stands for Lousy, Annoying, and Woeful. The law calls to abandon all enjoyment,
pleasure, and happiness to sit in complete silence by yourself as punishment for living. People who
practice this profession are woeful creatures who despise life and all it has to offer. These odd
creatures find some sort of solace in being paid to sit in silence and reflect on how many
monumentally corrupt things there truly are in their lives. Their job being at the top of the list. Many
may have sat in silence for so long that they have lost their sense of sound all together. Their ears may
be plugged so full of wax and unhappiness that they cannot hear anything but the silence their career
requires. This means none of them have spouses because nothing talks more than a married

Manipulative Techniques In Tartuffe
Throughout Moliere s Tartuffe both Cleante and Dorine attempt to expose Tartuffes hypocrisy,
confront Marianne of her frailty and expose the folly of Orgon. They use different strategies to
complete this task, and in the end, the tasks are accomplished. Cleante uses a reason based style, while
Dorine used a manipulative method to accomplish her goals. Although both seem to affect this goal, in
the end, Cleante s strategy seems to prevail.
Dorine is the lady s maid to Marianne and she primarily attempts to confront the frailty of Marianne.
Moliere reveals that Dorine s character is one that primarily relies on passive aggressive actions. This
is seen through her conversations throughout the play, particularly in Act 2 Scene 3. She also is
directly aggressive in the words she sometimes uses. This direct and blunt action is seen clearly in Act

Before this action, she was waiting for them to work it out. She does not have patience and jumps in
with that comment toward the two of them. Act 2 Scene 3 is the main confrontation between Dorine
and Marianne. Dorine tells Marianne that she (Marianne) is not playing her role properly and
confronts the fact that Marianne has been passive in her relationship with Valere. Although Marianne
wants out of the marriage scheme set up by Orgon(2.3, line 6) and claims to love Valere, she has
decided to kill herself instead of address the situation head on. Unfortunately, Valere does not stand up
for his marriage with Marianne. Because of this, Marianne feels defeated and says that she will take
his advice and marry Tartuffe. Valere then proclaims that because Marianne

Free Trade Is A Policy
Free trade is a policy followed by some international markets in which countries governments do not
restrict imports from, or exports to, other countries. Free trade is exemplified by the European
Economic Area and the North American Free Trade Agreement, which have established open markets.
Free trade is an economic policy under which the government does not interfere with trade. No tariffs
are applied to imports or exports, and people are allowed to trade goods and services as they please.
Supply and demand dictates the prices for which goods and services sell and are the only factors that
determine how resources are allocated in society. Under a free trade system, there are no trade
barriers. There is free access to markets and market information, and there are no government imposed
monopolies. Those who support free trade believe that it allows companies to come by raw materials
and lower prices, which, in turn, results in lower prices on the open market. Supporters also believe
that the levels of employment in a nation are determined by the monetary policy of that nation and not
the trade policy. Thus, the free trade economy of the U.S. is not to blame for the increasing levels of
unemployment. Many jobs are leaving the nation, but supporters of the free trade debate argue that if
companies could not outsource their labor to other nations, they could just automate these processes
anyway. Additionally, when people work for a profit and must compete, they produce

A Short Note On Fernandopulle s Work Of Uninsured
Sered and Fernandopulle s work of Uninsured in America brings awareness to the tainted health care
system implemented by the United States. This book was completed in 2004 during the election year,
at the time George W. Bush became president, and speaks for over 40 million Americans that lack
basic health insurance. More than one hundred interviews were conducted with uninsured women,
men, and their families as well as with a number of wellness centers, health care providers, and policy
makers. Interviewee s situations were highlighted as they describe their personal gravitational pull into
death spirals as their diseases and conditions were left untreated, and their debt accumulated due to a
deprivation of health insurance. The authors directly denunciate the development of the caste of the ill,
infirm, and marginally employed to employment and health insurance. The authors state that, the
current American system in which health care is linked to employment is creating a caste of the
chronically ill, infirm, and marginally employed. (Sered and Fernandopulle, 2005, p. 15) They refer to
the working poor as part of this caste because of the long lasting immobility from the death spiral as
well as recognizable physical features usually due to occupational conditions. People of this caste take
on jobs that are part time. Part time work is both low paying and does not offer health insurance.

Diction In Poetry
1. How is diction important to writing and understanding poetry?
Diction is important part of writing and understanding poetry because each story helps create the
poem tone, mood, and all the poetic literary devices. Each word helps create a thoughtful heartfelt
short story. No word is put in a poem without a reason, in my poem I mentioned Jospeh colorful coat
because coat rhymed with boat. Poetry is about the diction and understand why they are there, to
reveal the hidden message within the poem. In the poem Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost the
message about sinning and how that stays with a person. Robert Frost did not use the word sin once in
his poem but used other words to get his message across like Eden sank (Frost 6) and nothing gold can
stay (Frost 8). To me the diction is the key to poetry because the author wants to send a message of the
story to the readers, but also wants the readers to use their mind to understand what the hidden
message is.

The Role Of Fate In The Convergence Of Twain
Maktub is a recurring motif in the The Alchemist which means it is written. This term originates from
Arabic and it means that Allah has written your destiny and whatever occurs is meant to happen.
Every day was there to be lived or to mark one s departure from his world. Everything depended on
one word: Maktub. (Coelho 112). Your fate and or destiny has been set by someone in greater power.
Whatever occurs, is meant to be and happened for a reason. Whether it s from God, fate or destiny,
history or an individual s genes, determinism plays an enormous role in the Victorian Era. The
Victorian Era was a time in Britain where violence and war was occurring within only 60 years.

Ross C. Murfin describes that, One of the immediately obvious transitions observable in the poetry of
(or after) 1870 is a greater emphasis on Chance than on Fate (Bloom 138). This is not solely based on
Thomas Hardy, but also Leo Tolstoy. Now instead of fate, it is more about chance. The first question
that arises in the folktale is What do men live by? and the answer to this is God. Their lives are
predetermined by God and it can be seen through the character of Michael. Hills J. Miller introduces
that if, He withdraws to a distant place and watches the universe from afar (Bloom 47). Michael is an
angel being punished and every time Michael learns a truth he smiles because he knows it s something
God wanted him to learn. The second truth Michael learned is What dwells in a man? and through
Michael s experiences, he learns that love it self dwells in a man. Lastly, the third truth Michael learns
is What is not given to a man? and the answer that he learns is knowing one s own needs. The
protagonist, Simon, did not have to take Michael in and offer hospitality, but chose to take him in his
own home. It almost appears to be fate that led Michael to return back to heaven, however, Michael
chose to stay with Simon and keep learning what he had to learn to return to heaven. The narrator

The MLB has had an uproar of issues when it comes to the use of substances. The biggest issue that
the MLB focuses primarily on is the use of steroids. An even bigger issue that should be highlighted is
the use of chewing tobacco while playing the game. When something becomes known as possibly life
threatening, the logical explanation is that it is illegal or illegal for people under a certain age. In this
case being illegal is not the explanation, when in fact this substance is the cause of over 400,000

Analysis Of Anne Bradstreet And Edward Taylor
Anne Bradstreet and Edward Taylor are two of the most distinguished and fervent Puritan poets. Yet
this similarity has proven to be one of the few, if not only between these two. One cannot help but find
it intriguing that poets who belong to the same religious group and style would write so differently.
Many of these differences are not even subtle or hidden beneath the text itself. The differences
themselves hold implications and ideas that differ between each poet. The first difference which is the
most obvious would be the style of each respected poet. Every poet has a unique style, but generally
those who belong to the same period or set of ideas have similar styles. Between Bradstreet and Taylor
there are no similarities in style. Taylor can be considered a much more polished poet. Taylor s poetry
is full of poetic techniques and advanced styling tools such as the iambic meter and advanced rhyming
schemes. This style can be seen as the norm for a highly educated preacher which Taylor was.
Bradstreet on the other hand has a more simplistic style that can be seen as the voice of the common
or average Puritan. Therefore, there is far less ornamentation in her poetry. If one compares the
Bradstreet s Here Follows Some Verses Upon the Burning of Our House, July 10th, 1666. and Taylor s

The Examined Life By Slajov Zizek
In the film The Examined Life, a compelling documentary directed by Astra Taylor, eight powerful
philosophers meander around places that are particularly special to them, as well as their ideas. Issues
discussed range from cosmopolitanism to truth, and each philosopher is given 10 minutes to share
their thoughts. Although not enough time to really connect with the philosophers, some concrete
points are made. Slajov Zizek discusses ecology and our idealization of nature, and the critical
importance and implications of how we live as humans in unison with the environment. Slajov Zizek
is filmed at a trash dump, very significant to the argument he is about to make. One of the first things
he tells viewers is that we need more alienation from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Zizek, if we can vision nature as existing as a series of catastrophes rather then viewing
it as balanced, then we may begin to acknowledge the implications of how we live symbiotically with
the environment. He stresses that as humans we must begin to recognize the changes in the
environment and adapt with them. His attempt at a resolution is to isolate ourselves from nature even
more than we already have. He believes that if we can create our own environment, then catastrophes
will be irrelevant and our disavowal will be warranted. We should develop, I think, a much more
terrifying new abstract materialism, a kinds of mathematical universe where there is nothing. There
are just formulas, technical forms and so on. If we can find beauty in trash itself that is a success. If
we can learn to love the earth for what it is, that is also a success. This comes as a result of additions
that we must work to make in order to greater the success of the environment. That s the true love of
the world. Because what is love? Love is not idealization. Love means you accept a person...with all
its failures, stupidities, and ugly points. And nonetheless, the person s absolute for you [...] But you
see perfection in imperfection itself. And that s how we should learn to love the world. The key to
Zizek s ideology is love through change. We as people must begin to adapt and accept the world as it
comes, and care for it as if it were

During the winter, dog safety, and the safety of all pets, is critical. When it gets cold outside, many pet
owners are extra cautious with outdoor temperatures, bringing pets inside. Also, space heaters and

While in most cases home fires are accidental, many could be prevented with a few safety tips. In

A few simple safety measures can help you prevent fires. However, if a fire does happen there are a
few things you can do ahead of time to help your pet.
When you leave secure you pet in an area that is closest to an exit and free from hazards. While crates
will keep a pet out of trouble, they can also leave them with no way to escape if a fire starts. If you
must leave your pet created, leave them near an exit where a firefighter can quickly get them out.
Younger pets may be more likely to get into trouble and potentially cause a fire. Leave them in an area
that is free from any fire hazards. Use a baby gate to block them from no no areas while you are away.
The same goes for cats. Since they love to jump on things and knock things over, be sure they are not
free to roam in the kitchen or other areas that may hold fire hazards.
Have your leashes near a door as well, this way a firefighter not only knows you have pets, but can
use the leash to help your pets out. You can also post a window cling for firefighters. These are

Thorntons Strategy over the Years
Introduction A number of factors have contributed to the success and problems faced by Thorntons up
until 2003. Over the years, the company seems to have lost focus on its original strategy based on
product differentiation and spread itself too thin in pursuit of multiple objectives. It is clear that the
values on which Thorntons was originally founded were the principal reasons for the company s initial
success in Britain. From the very beginning, a combination of the quality ingredients that Thorntons
had used and the manufacturing expertise it had developed for its core products were the key reasons
for its success. Indeed, upon originally launching itself in the United Kingdom s confection industry,

Thorntons also expanded into the ice cream industry and introduced a children s range. However, the
new product lines lowered the image of the chocolates to simple snacks or impulse buys . In
diversifying its product offerings, Thorntons was soon competing in a saturated market with big
names such as Cadbury. Also negatively impacting the company was the fact that not all products
were proven successful. Thorntons had little experience in the manufacture of ice cream and was soon
producing multiple mediocre products instead of several superior products. Customers were no longer
sure of the quality of Thorntons chocolate and as a result, sales performance was impacted. Although
by offering a wide range of products Thorntons could have possibly appealed to a greater number of
consumers (including teenagers and children), product offerings were not consistent and this
demographic often preferred to stick with well known brands such as Cadbury or Nestle. Therefore,
Thorntons image as a specialist chocolatier was seriously damaged. Another factor that has always
affected Thorntons sales results was issues in seasonal sales variations; during certain years, seasonal
demands were difficult to forecast and stock outs occurred, while during other years, over production
lead to waste. In order to remedy this difficulty, some preventative

human brain. The human brain consists of billions of nerve cells or neurons connected via electrical
and chemical activities (NeuroPro). In the early 20th century, German physiologist and psychiatrist
named Hans Berger was the first to record these electrical activities in the brain ... Show more content

The picked up electrical signals from the scalp is then sent to the amplifiers that is used to reduce
noises in the signals (Teplan, 2002). After that, the signals will be translated from analog into digital
form precisely in a converter for which the acquired data are then stored and presented in the personal
computer (Teplan, 2002).
According to Roche and Dockree (2011), once the signal has been recorded, the researcher might use
two main approaches available namely event related potentials (ERPs) and Spectral Analysis to further
analyze the signal from brain neuronal activity. Event Related Potentials (ERPs) analyze the changes
of the continuous electrical activity in the brain caused by a cognitive, motor or perceptual event that
could determine what regions of brain are activated at a given time (Roche Dockree, 2011). Whereas
Spectral Analysis shows the correlation between electrophysiological and mental activity through
decomposing brain rhythms into different frequency bands that can be measured during times when
the persons are alert and receptive (Roche Dockree, 2011).
Although, there are different methods in examining the brain neuronal activity such as MRI, MEG and
CT, the EEG is known to be a comprehensive and effective brain imaging technique (Michel Murray,
2012). The EEG is categorized as a functional imaging method because it has the

Creating Social Connection
In the article Creating social connection through inferential reproduction: Loneliness and perceived
agency in gadgets, gods, and greyhounds by Epley, Akalis, Waytz Cacioppo the researchers conducted
three studies. The purpose of the studies were to examine if loneliness was significantly correlated
with the anthropomorphic mental state, if social disconnection increase belief in some religious agents
or actions, and whether the likelihood of attributing humanlike mental states or traits to pets would be
greater among people induced to feel social disconnection than among people not so induced.
Researchers made three hypotheses, one for each study. The first hypothesis was that loneliness was
significantly correlated with the anthropomorphic mental state ratings, the second hypothesis was that
participants in the disconnected condition reported stronger belief in supernatural agents than
participants in the other two conditions combined. The last hypothesis was that participants in the
disconnected condition were more likely to select one of the three social connection traits than were
participants in the other two conditions combined. After completing the methodology, it was ... Show

From the article by Epley, Akalis, Waytz Cacioppo, it can be concluded that there is a relationship to
fill the gap of human social connection. What did the lonely human do to humanize their pet? This
could help explain the relationship between the pet and human. Perhaps some participants are just
normal pet owners, and some take their pet t work, dress them up in human clothes and even read
them bedtime stories. Understanding this information will allow us to know how far a person is
willing to go to fill the gap. To expand even further upon the idea researchers could examine the cause
of loneliness and divide the participants into categories to draw research based

Similarities Between Gen Y And Baby Boomers
Gen X, Baby boomers, and Gen Y are the different generations who work side by side in today s

generations are a large chunk of the workforce, around eighty million each. Whatever those
generations value, they have the power to drive to get the results (Hewlett, Sherbin Sumberg, 2009).
Baby boomers and Gen Y have similarities in what they value and there motivates them in the
workspace. They tend to share some attitudes and behaviors. At work, Baby Boomers and Gen Y are

Case Analysis Of Tarasoff Case
Tarasoff duty to warn/ protect is practiced by the therapist or psychologist to determine serious threat
of violence to another and they have reasonable care to warn and protect the potential victims when
there were foreseeable danger (Small, 2010). In Tarasoff case, the client, Poddar was intended to kill
his formal girlfriend, Tarasoff (Small, 2010). His personal psychologist was told about it. However, no
action was taken and this actually causes Poddar in carrying out his threat that he killed Tarasoff
(Small, 2010). The psychologist in charge in were then sued for not being able to inform the potential

Robber Barons By John Davison Rockefeller And Andrew Carnegie
Robber Barons such as John Davison Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie were a large part of the
propelling force that led the United States into a new frontier, setting the standard for the American
dream. These men were known for their ingenuity, intuition, and innovation as business men. Each
setting a high standard in their field, these men set out to accomplish greatness by revolutionizing their
industry. They were known in history as the first men to become giants of the industrialized world,
they created a new ear, and with it legacies that have lasted centuries.
John D. Rockefeller founded the Standard Oil company, and became one of the wealthiest men in the
world, propelling America into a new frontier. In the 19th century, kerosene was highly demanded,
and there were small kerosene manufacturing companies all over the United States. Rockefeller s early
life was no near the upbringing of a billionaire. His father began as a peddler working to make ends
meet as his mother raised his brothers and sisters. He was given a $100 loan to buy a small boat, but
by 1870, he established the Standard Oil company. In only 10 years, Rockefeller owned 90% of the
U.S s oil refineries. During this time, many accused Rockefeller as participating in unethical business
practices. He collaborated with major railroads to eliminate his competition and used predatory
pricing as well as horizontal integration to monopolize the entire oil industry. In 1886, Rockefeller

Financial Statements And The Financial Position Of A Firm...
Introduction
The overall purpose of financial statements is the provision of relevant and concise information about
the financial position of a firm or other business enterprise. Financial statements allow a manager or
analyst to make informed judgments regarding the proven and likely future performance of a firm
prior to the making of important investment decisions (Bernstein and Wild, 2000).
Purpose of the Income Statement
According to Melicher and Norton (2014), the primary purpose of the income statement is to provide a
concise report of the revenues generated and expenses incurred by a business entity over a defined
time period typically a quarter or a year. Importantly, the revenues and expenses referred to in the
income ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This will often include advertising costs, the salaries and commissions earned by the sales force, and
general accounting costs such as for the preparation of financial records and statements (Melicher and
Norton, 2014).
The final type of expenses listed on a typical income statement is depreciation. This refers to the
estimates made on the reduction in value of key production and other assets over the period covered
by the income statement. This is regarded as a non cash expense and is often applied to items such as
plant and equipment, vehicle or aircraft fleets, and some types of real property (Melicher and Norton,
2014).
Purpose of the Balance Sheet
According to Melicher and Norton (2014), the primary purpose of the balance sheet is to summarize a
company s overall financial position at a fixed point in time typically the conclusion of a quarter or
year. A balance sheet is differentiated from an income statement in that the former is, effectively, a
snapshot of a business s financial position while an income statement provides a reflection of financial
performance over time. At its most basic, the balance sheet provides details on the firm s assets,
liabilities, and its shareholders equity as at a specific date.
Major Types of Assets
There are two major categories of assets listed on a typical balance sheet current assets, and property
and equipment (sometimes referred to as fixed assets).

This is particularly true for industrial goods, on which tariffs have fallen from around 40% at the end
of World War II to a tenth of that today. Nevertheless, tariffs continue to influence trade patterns.
By making products more expensive to consumers, tariffs hamper demand for imports. They also alter
the relative prices of products, and can protect uncompetitive companies and their overpriced
products. These distortions are particularly pronounced in many non OECD countries where tariffs
remain substantially higher than in the OECD area.
Tariffs on agricultural products are on average much higher than those on industrial products, although
there is considerable diversity from country to country. Moreover, tariffs may be coupled with quotas
whereby a country sets a tariff of, say, 10% on the first 10 000 units of imported grain (called the tariff
rate quota, or TRQ) but increases it to 100% on any additional grain imports
(called the above quota tariff). One OECD study found that such tariffs on agriculture products were
equivalent, on average, to a straight tariff of 36% for OECD countries and 63% for selected non
OECD countries, compared with agricultural tariffs of 15% in
OECD countries and 43% in non OECD countries.
Even when tariffs have been reduced, the way they are structured continues to pose problems in both
agriculture and industry.

Australia s Involvement In The Vietnam War
The Cold War era (1945 1989) was conflicted with the dominance of, overall, the two superpowers,
the U.S.S.R and the U.S, with political and social ideology taking centre stage. Australia s
involvement during this time, was paramount and reinstated its long term allegiance with the United
States when entering South Vietnam. After WWII had finished, the Soviet Union showed aggression
towards the U.S as the competition for world superiority began, and led to the capitalist/democratic
nations particularly aligned with the United States fearing the spread of communism. Countries

Nuremberg Laws Dbq
The election of Adolf Hitler in Germany as Chancellor in 1933 brought many gradual changes to the
struggling state, which had been greatly affected by the damages of World War I. These changes,
through the use of legislation and government, were directed towards the minorities, especially the
Jews. The actions of Hitler caused the death of millions and many other negative side effects to
Germany and their people. One major enactment that was directed against the Jews were the
Nuremberg Laws, which consequently stripped the Jews of their German citizenship. These helped
establish the widespread persecution against the Jewish community, which eventually led to the
British getting involved with the transportation of thousands of refugee children. Britain had some
history with the immigration of a large amount of children during World War I from Belgium. They
once again took up the humanitarian effort with the Kindertransport, which saved the lives of many
children from Germany. The Nuremberg Laws were supported by other actions against the Jews such
as boycotts and degatory signs that targeted them. The Jews, with the loss of their citizenship, now had
to carry around identification papers and other signs to single them out from the rest of society. On
October 28, 17,000 Jews of Polish citizenship, many of whom had been living in Germany for
decades, were arrested and relocated across the Polish border. The Polish government refused to admit
them so they were interned in

Seeing Is Believing Analysis
Don t trust everything you see. Even salt looks like sugar Anonymous. Some people believe that once
you see something, you can claim it to be true, but is it? Other citizens think what they see is an
optical illusion, acting, or maybe even craziness. For example, back in the slavery era, the overseers,
drivers, and slaves had to be in the hot sun either working or watching out for suspicious. When you
are in the heat too long, you began to hallucinate because you are hot, thirsty, or even tired. You
believe you see something, but is it there, is there any proof, or are you just focused on what you
think. Therefore, I understand that the saying seeing is believing, is not accurate.
I do not believe this saying because what your eyes see, is not always true because your brain and eyes
are manipulating you. For example, the short story entitled, Magic and the Brain, on the second page
of the story, fourth paragraph, sentence 3, states, As Thompson introduces his assistant, her skintight
white dress wordlessly lures the spectators[2] into assuming that nothing certainly not another dress
could possibly be hiding under the white one. That reasonable assumption, of course, is wrong. The

The 300 million people that live in the United States originate from many diverse countries and all

The Characteristics Of A True Hero In Beowulf
Even though a hero is one who laughs in the presence of evil. One who is brave, confident, and always
is there for his people in there time of need. Beowulf, in my opinion, displayed a few of the
characteristics of a hero. True he was brave and adventurous, however, he was selfish because he did
all of his heroic events in order to show his greatness. For example, in the battle against Grendel, he
was willing to risk his life by fighting without weapons to show his might. A real hero would not
foolishly unarm himself only to prove his strength. Beowulf, however, did show great bravery and
good judgment during his battle against the dragon, even though it was there that he met his demise.
He rose to the challenge to protect his kingdom and did in fact, with a little help, do just that.Although
foolish, He never once feared for his life as was quick to take on any challenge. In conclusion, besides
his arrogance, Beowulf is a good example of a true hero. , Throughout Beowulf, Grendel is described
as mankind s enemy, and his attacks are driven by the jealousy that humans are able to enjoy life in the
light, and he is condemned to misery in the darkness. It s not just Grendel s ancestry that makes him
evil; Grendel s actions are evil as well. because I have wrested the hilt from the enemies hand,
avenged the evil done to the Danes; it is what was due. (1668 1670) The battle between good and evil

The surprisingly low number of incidents recorded during rainy, snowy and icy weather may reflect
increased attention to roadway conditions and lowered expectations by the driver. However congestion
present on the road increases the number of these incidents. This anger that these ragers bring to our
roadways cause accidents in which many cases turn out to be fatalities. When someone gets cut off
while driving it shows the lack of responsibility they actually have. Stress is also related to these
drivers who take out their anger on others. Such aggression involves shouting obscenities, and vulgar
expressions that include the ever so popular
middle finger. They risk others lives as well as their own. The road rage motorist is obviously not
aware of the tickets and fines they will receive because of their catastrophic driving habit. Road rage
and aggressive driving may be similar to some, however the characteristics of the two are in fact
different. In our state of Florida police use a wide variety of non traditional vehicles and a plain

Theobromine Research Paper
Although discovered by A. Woskresensky in 1841, and synthesized by E. Fischer in 1882,

can be found in the beans of the cocoa plant, tea leaves, or kola nuts. From the hulls of the cocoa

Elementary teachers not only introduce their students to the basic concepts of core subjects, they also
help pave the path to each student s future success. Education to become a teacher is long and tedious,
and while the income may not be the highest available, watching students develop a new skill or grow
an appreciation for learning can be very rewarding. Because there will always be a need for education,

Elementary teachers play an important part in the intellectual development as well as the social

Nevertheless, from the variety of them, it is evident that mateship in Australia is conceived

Behavior Modification Project
I chose to modify my slight procrastination of school work and also utilize the time I am working
more efficiently. Although I do not procrastinate with my school work to often I felt that it was enough

only motivate me prior to work, but also to keep me motivated during and after work. The classical
conditioning was playing music prior to any time I was going to be doing school work, weather it was
on my way to each class, before homework, or before studying. The cue to trigger my brain to prepare
to do school work was certain music, and the routine was playing it for 10 minutes prior to any school
work, and the reward was getting better grades on quizzes, exams, and homework for all of my
classes. By using certain songs and listening to them specifically when I wanted to sit down and work
I noticed I was starting to become conditioned after a couple days of using the technique. I also
noticed that as time went on this connection became stronger and stronger, and to be even more
specific I noticed that certain songs had more of an effect on my motivation than

  • 2. Comparison Between Enron And Arthur Anderson Enron and Arthur Anderson were both giants in their own industry. Enron, a Texas based company in the energy trading business, was expanding rapidly in both domestic and global markets. Arthur Anderson, LLC. (Anderson), based out of Chicago, was well established as one of the big five accounting firms. But the means by which they achieved this status became questionable and eventually contributed to their demise. Enron used what if often referred to as creative accounting methods, this resulted in them posting record breaking earnings. Anderson, who earned substantial audit and consultation fees from Enron, failed to comply with the auditing standards required in their line of work. Investigations and reports have resulted in finger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As competition increased and the economy started to plunge in the early 2000s, Enron struggled to maintain their profit margins. Executives determined that in order to keep their debt ratio low, they would need to transfer debt from their balance sheet. Reducing hard assets while earning increasing paper profits served to increase Enron s return on assets (ROA) and reduce its debt to total assets ratio, making the company more attractive to credit rating agencies and investors (Thomas, 2002). Executives developed Structured Financing and Special Purpose Entities (SPE), which they used to transfer the majority of Enron s debt to the SPEs. Enron also failed to appropriately disclose information regarding the related party transactions in the notes to the financial statements.Andersen performed audit work for Enron and rendered an unqualified opinion of their financial statements while this activity occurred. The seriousness and amount of misstatement has led some to believe that Andersen must have known what was going on inside Enron, but decided to overlook it. Assets and equities were overstated by over $1.2 billion, which can clearly be considered a material amount (Cunningham Harris, 2006). These are a few of several practices that spiraled out of control in an effort to meet forecasted quarterly earnings. As competition grew against the energy giant and their ... • 3. How Does Brush Use Literary Devices In The Birthday Party A birthday party regarding the age is always a nice gesture to have, and a great way to celebrate a birthday. A simple birthday cake can be really meaningful to a person on their birthday. In the short story The Birthday Party by Katharine Brush, however she demonstrates that a relationship that does not take consideration and does not appreciate what their partner does for them, is a relationship that is not worth it. She gets this message across, using literary devices such as imagery, alliteration, and symbolism. Imagery is a source used for the author to get her point across because we get to see a visual in our minds. For example when Brush is describing the characters, she states, The man had a round, self satisfied face, with glasses ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. A Brief Note On Economic And Financial Stressors D. Economic and Financial Stressors One of the many reasons why people work is to make money. As the cost of living increases, people need to keep up with their earning. Since it is not always possible to keep earning more through promotion, people decide to get second or third jobs in their free time to make extra money to support their life and family. Even though making extra money is beneficial to everyone, people give up on their free time, take more responsibility, and spend more energy. As a result, their stress level increases exponentially. In order to earn more money in the short term, people end up getting more stressed because it is accumulated in the long term (Matteson Ivanceivch, 1987, 40). E. Situational Constraints Situational constraints occur when an employee`s environment inhibits him/her from performing properly. Important support personnel are usually fired first in case of budget cuts. Even though their job may seem unimportant at first, they are crucial to the workplace. Paper Towel Absorbency | Paper Towel Absorbency | INT Task 3 Mardy Hodge Wilson | | | | | Paper towels were introduced for kitchen use in 1931 by the Scott Company and are one of the most versatile paper products. They are made from wood pulp which is then bleached to make them white. Resin is added to increase the paper s strength and the implicated water is then removed, allowing the fibers to bond and form paper sheets. Two layers are combined to create moisture absorbing air pockets, and shapes are pressed into the paper to further improve absorbency. Zuckerman remains the Chief Executive Officer of Boston Properties, worth over two and a half billion U.S. dollars. Manipulative Techniques In Tartuffe Throughout Moliere s Tartuffe both Cleante and Dorine attempt to expose Tartuffes hypocrisy, confront Marianne of her frailty and expose the folly of Orgon. • 13. Free Trade Is A Policy Free trade is a policy followed by some international markets in which countries governments do not restrict imports from, or exports to, other countries. Free trade is exemplified by the European Economic Area and the North American Free Trade Agreement, which have established open markets. Free trade is an economic policy under which the government does not interfere with trade. No tariffs are applied to imports or exports, and people are allowed to trade goods and services as they please. Supply and demand dictates the prices for which goods and services sell and are the only factors that determine how resources are allocated in society. Under a free trade system, there are no trade barriers. There is free access to markets and market information, and there are no government imposed monopolies. Those who support free trade believe that it allows companies to come by raw materials and lower prices, which, in turn, results in lower prices on the open market. Supporters also believe that the levels of employment in a nation are determined by the monetary policy of that nation and not the trade policy. Thus, the free trade economy of the U.S. is not to blame for the increasing levels of unemployment. Many jobs are leaving the nation, but supporters of the free trade debate argue that if companies could not outsource their labor to other nations, they could just automate these processes anyway. This book was completed in 2004 during the election year, at the time George W. Bush became president, and speaks for over 40 million Americans that lack basic health insurance. More than one hundred interviews were conducted with uninsured women, men, and their families as well as with a number of wellness centers, health care providers, and policy makers. Interviewee s situations were highlighted as they describe their personal gravitational pull into death spirals as their diseases and conditions were left untreated, and their debt accumulated due to a deprivation of health insurance. The authors directly denunciate the development of the caste of the ill, infirm, and marginally employed to employment and health insurance. The authors state that, the current American system in which health care is linked to employment is creating a caste of the chronically ill, infirm, and marginally employed. (Sered and Fernandopulle, 2005, p. 15) They refer to the working poor as part of this caste because of the long lasting immobility from the death spiral as well as recognizable physical features usually due to occupational conditions. • 15. Diction In Poetry 1. How is diction important to writing and understanding poetry? Diction is important part of writing and understanding poetry because each story helps create the poem tone, mood, and all the poetic literary devices. Each word helps create a thoughtful heartfelt short story. No word is put in a poem without a reason, in my poem I mentioned Jospeh colorful coat because coat rhymed with boat. Poetry is about the diction and understand why they are there, to reveal the hidden message within the poem. In the poem Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost the message about sinning and how that stays with a person. Robert Frost did not use the word sin once in his poem but used other words to get his message across like Eden sank (Frost 6) and nothing gold can stay (Frost 8). To me the diction is the key to poetry because the author wants to send a message of the story to the readers, but also wants the readers to use their mind to understand what the hidden message is. 2. The first question that arises in the folktale is What do men live by? and the answer to this is God. Their lives are predetermined by God and it can be seen through the character of Michael. One cannot help but find it intriguing that poets who belong to the same religious group and style would write so differently. Many of these differences are not even subtle or hidden beneath the text itself. The differences themselves hold implications and ideas that differ between each poet. The first difference which is the most obvious would be the style of each respected poet. Every poet has a unique style, but generally those who belong to the same period or set of ideas have similar styles. Between Bradstreet and Taylor there are no similarities in style. Taylor can be considered a much more polished poet. Taylor s poetry is full of poetic techniques and advanced styling tools such as the iambic meter and advanced rhyming schemes. This style can be seen as the norm for a highly educated preacher which Taylor was. His attempt at a resolution is to isolate ourselves from nature even more than we already have. A balance sheet is differentiated from an income statement in that the former is, effectively, a snapshot of a business s financial position while an income statement provides a reflection of financial performance over time. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is particularly true for industrial goods, on which tariffs have fallen from around 40% at the end of World War II to a tenth of that today. Nevertheless, tariffs continue to influence trade patterns. By making products more expensive to consumers, tariffs hamper demand for imports. They also alter the relative prices of products, and can protect uncompetitive companies and their overpriced products. These distortions are particularly pronounced in many non OECD countries where tariffs remain substantially higher than in the OECD area. Tariffs on agricultural products are on average much higher than those on industrial products, although there is considerable diversity from country to country. Moreover, tariffs may be coupled with quotas whereby a country sets a tariff of, say, 10% on the first 10 000 units of imported grain (called the tariff rate quota, or TRQ) but increases it to 100% on any additional grain imports (called the above quota tariff). One OECD study found that such tariffs on agriculture products were equivalent, on average, to a straight tariff of 36% for OECD countries and 63% for selected non OECD countries, compared with agricultural tariffs of 15% in OECD countries and 43% in non OECD countries. Even when tariffs have been reduced, the way they are structured continues to pose problems in both agriculture and industry. Problems exist

  • 33. Nuremberg Laws Dbq The election of Adolf Hitler in Germany as Chancellor in 1933 brought many gradual changes to the struggling state, which had been greatly affected by the damages of World War I. These changes, through the use of legislation and government, were directed towards the minorities, especially the Jews. The actions of Hitler caused the death of millions and many other negative side effects to Germany and their people. One major enactment that was directed against the Jews were the Nuremberg Laws, which consequently stripped the Jews of their German citizenship. These helped establish the widespread persecution against the Jewish community, which eventually led to the British getting involved with the transportation of thousands of refugee children. Britain had some history with the immigration of a large amount of children during World War I from Belgium. They once again took up the humanitarian effort with the Kindertransport, which saved the lives of many children from Germany. The Nuremberg Laws were supported by other actions against the Jews such as boycotts and degatory signs that targeted them. The Jews, with the loss of their citizenship, now had to carry around identification papers and other signs to single them out from the rest of society. Other citizens think what they see is an optical illusion, acting, or maybe even craziness. For example, back in the slavery era, the overseers, drivers, and slaves had to be in the hot sun either working or watching out for suspicious. When you are in the heat too long, you began to hallucinate because you are hot, thirsty, or even tired. You believe you see something, but is it there, is there any proof, or are you just focused on what you think. Therefore, I understand that the saying seeing is believing, is not accurate. I do not believe this saying because what your eyes see, is not always true because your brain and eyes are manipulating you. For example, the short story entitled, Magic and the Brain, on the second page of the story, fourth paragraph, sentence 3, states, As Thompson introduces his assistant, her skintight white dress wordlessly lures the spectators[2] into assuming that nothing certainly not another dress could possibly be hiding under the white one. One who is brave, confident, and always is there for his people in there time of need. Beowulf, in my opinion, displayed a few of the characteristics of a hero. True he was brave and adventurous, however, he was selfish because he did all of his heroic events in order to show his greatness. For example, in the battle against Grendel, he was willing to risk his life by fighting without weapons to show his might. A real hero would not foolishly unarm himself only to prove his strength. Beowulf, however, did show great bravery and good judgment during his battle against the dragon, even though it was there that he met his demise. He rose to the challenge to protect his kingdom and did in fact, with a little help, do just that.Although foolish, He never once feared for his life as was quick to take on any challenge. In conclusion, besides his arrogance, Beowulf is a good example of a true hero. , Throughout Beowulf, Grendel is described as mankind s enemy, and his attacks are driven by the jealousy that humans are able to enjoy life in the light, and he is condemned to misery in the darkness. It s not just Grendel s ancestry that makes him evil; Grendel s actions are evil as well. because I have wrested the hilt from the enemies hand, avenged the evil done to the Danes; it is what was due. However congestion present on the road increases the number of these incidents. This anger that these ragers bring to our roadways cause accidents in which many cases turn out to be fatalities. When someone gets cut off while driving it shows the lack of responsibility they actually have. Stress is also related to these drivers who take out their anger on others. Such aggression involves shouting obscenities, and vulgar expressions that include the ever so popular middle finger. They risk others lives as well as their own. The road rage motorist is obviously not aware of the tickets and fines they will receive because of their catastrophic driving habit.
