The Intersection Of Social Movements And Art
The intersection of social movements and Art is one that can be observed throughout the civil
right movements of America in the 1960 s and early 1970 s. The sixties in America saw a
substantial cultural and social change through activism against the Vietnam war, women s right
and against the segregation of the African American communities. Art became a prominent
method of activism to advocate the civil rights movement. It was a way to express self identity
as well as the struggle that people went through and by means of visual imagery a way to show
political ideals and forms of resistance. To examine how a specific movement can have a profound
effects on the visual art, this essay will focus on the black art movement of the 1960s and... Show

Secondly, observing the work of Emma Amos who was the only women within the spiral group.
Romare Bearden, started his artistic career being an abstractionist, however the civil right
movement had an impact on his art which lead him to the creation of the group called spiral. With
the help of other black artists, Bearden sought to reflect how they could portray their connection to
the civil right movement through their arts as a racial group minority. Ralph Ellison (1977),
mentions the anachronism of the American social experience of minority artists which could then
be used to understand the motivation behind the art of Bearden. This anachronism refers to; The
imbalance in American society which leads to a distorted perception of social reality, to a stubborn
blindness to the creative possibilities of cultural diversity, to the prevalence of negative myth, racial
stereotypes and dangerous illusion about art, humanities and society. (Ellison: 1977 : pp.673) It is
then argued that many artists are often majorly influenced by the power of this anachronism, as
their culture as well as the freedom of representing their self identity through aesthetic technique of
self expression that are already existing. This, then restrict their attempt to seek change of the
complex social situation they experience. Meanwhile, it is said that Bearden attempt not to follow
the anachronism in is art by transforming it into a component of art as a mean of personal vision

The Horrors of Cannibalism
Cannibalism to say the least is a very taboo word. Cannibalism is known to be very disturbing and
sets off a certain set of powerful emotions when spoken about. One thing about cannibalism is that
it used to be considered a normal part of life, and has only recently been seen as taboo in the recent
centuries. Many people believe Cannibalismshould be legal world wide, but only have reasoning s
of culture and religions. Cannibalism should be illegal because of immorality, diseases , and
murder by eating someone s flesh. The History of Cannibalism is small, yet widely spread
around the world. The Korowai Tribe has been around since 1974, they are known for killing
outsiders, and to be afraid of pale skinned people (Raffaele). If Cannibalism stays legal, the
isolated tribes could possibly expand, and want to kill any pale skinned person, or anyone not
from their tribe. The Carib tribe was the first known tribe to commit acts of cannibalism to their
enemies, which became increasingly rare once the introduction of Christianity was introduced in
the area (Mind Q). Once the human race became more active in moral behavior, Cannibalism was
outcast, giving it no reason to be legal within our current society. The Aztecs are known as one of
the most brutal tribes to date, the Aztecs would commit thousands of human sacrifices a year (Mind
Q). When you have Cannibals eating live hearts (Mind Q), and making human bodies into multiple
dishes just after ripping their

Life Insurance Coverage
Many people make the mistake of spending a lot of time choosing the right type of life
insurance for their families but they don t spend enough time choosing the amount of coverage
to opt for. Obviously, it s important to choose enough coverage to protect your family. However,
you don t want to choose too high an amount because your premiums may be unnecessarily high
and the cost of your premiums may cut too deeply into your budget. Below is a list of the 4 main
areas of coverage to consider when choosing your life insurance coverage amounts. 1) Major
expenses. It is suggested that the major expenses that your spouse and children will face should be
covered. Figure out how much it will cost to pay off your home. As long as the home is paid

(if they did any) and of gathering various types of berries, nuts, tubers, and other plants to eat.
Women s had lots of jobs to do such as, taking down and setting up the family s Wigwam, looking
after the kids, and making all the clothes. Men usually travelled long distances to catch food. These
were the family roles of the Eastern Woodland people.
Homes The Eastern Woodlands didn t live in apartment building or houses like we do now.
Instead, most would live in dome shaped Wigwams . While others would live in Concial
Wigwams similar to the plain tipis . It was always the women s job to set up and take down the
Wigwams . The Wigwams frame would be made of either spruce or birch trees. Then the
Wigwams would be covered in birch bark and layers of the wood for protection against
precipitation and the wind. Inside of the Wigwam was a rock fire pit to keep the family warm.

The Discovery Of The Polio Vaccine
Ashley Anderson
Professor Giunta

23 April 2017
In this term paper the discovery of the Polio vaccine will be discussed and broken down into
deeper thought on why and how it was discovered. Poliomyelitis is an infectious disease that
reached epidemic levels in the mid twentieth century. People that were unfortunate to receive this
disease faced hardships including fevers, sore throat and vomiting(Allaby). These are just
symptoms but Polio can be a vicious disease leaving their patients paralyzed. The majority of
people who are diagnosed with Polio don t get paralyzed right away or die suddenly. The symptoms
are very similar to any other sickness and people who are newly diagnosed do not ... Show more

These other scientists include Thomas Francis, Jr. who Salk worked with for a year in
microbiology and resulting in Francis isolating two types of influenza virus(Allaby).
Microbiologist John Enders, virologists Frederick Robbins and Thomas Weller all influenced
Salk to find the breakthrough he so desperately needed. Both virologists grown viruses in tissue
taken from a living organism using penicillin to keep the object free from infection(Allaby). This
was a breakthrough for Salk because he copied their procedure and used viruses from the spinal
cords of polio patients and grew them in another object to test on(Allaby). Jonas Silk has always
been involved with medical science throughout his entire life. He attends and graduates in surgery
from the City College of New York. In 1938 when Salk works with Thomas Francis he was
introduced to finding the influenza vaccine(Allaby). This is the event that made Salk interested in
finding out more about viruses and urges him to want to find a vaccine for a disease. Salk ended
up working on a influenza vaccine at the Virus Research Unit of the University of Michigan
School of Public Health(Allaby). From working on the influenza vaccine Salk had the opportunity
to become the head of the virus research laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh in
1947(Allaby). This is where and when Salk decides to begin his work on the polio vaccine. The
testing Salk produced with the Polio virus in the spinal cords, they revealed that there

main focus became fighting for peace. He had explored many religions, but decided love, peace

Essay Symbols in Susan Glaspell s Trifles
Symbols in Susan Glaspell s Trifles
In the play titled Trifles, by Susan Glaspell, Minnie Foster Wright is being accused of murdering
her husband, John. In this production, Mrs. Wright is consistently referenced, and although she is
not witnessed, she is very recognizable. There are important symbols in this play that signifies
Mrs. Wright and her existence as it once was and as it currently exists to be. Particularly the canary,
this symbolizes Mrs. Wright s long forgotten past. Additionally, the birdcage, this symbolizes her
life as it currently exists. Certainly the quilt is a symbol, which is an important clue on how Mr.
Wright was killed. In addition, the rocking chair, this symbolizes her life as it has diminished

While the canary was incredibly lively and sang beautifully, so did Mrs. Foster. John Wright
was awfully abusive towards Mrs. Wright, in the means that he required her to live her life
comparable to a caged bird. He obtained her freedom from the outside world, in return, explains
why she recognized herself in the bird. This explains for the reasoning of their house being far set
back into the woods and having no telephone service. She ventured out, only when she was
allowed, and assuming that John also did not allow her to have friends, this led to the killing of the
canary.
The quilt is one major clue as to how Minnie killed her husband. The women were trying to figure
out if she was going to sew or not the quilt. Well, Mr. Wright was strangled in a strange manner,
just how the knot was messed up in red string. The men laughed it off butt Mrs. Hale and Mrs.
Peters knew what had happened.
Mrs. Wright is referred to when Mrs. Hale speaks of her by using her maiden name, when saying
?I wish you?d seen Minnie Foster when she wore a white dress with blue ribbons and stood up
there in the choir and sang.? The old rocking chair symbolizes Mrs. Wright as she has allowed
herself to depreciate, just as the rocking chair has depreciated. ?The chair sagged to one side,?
Mrs. Hale stated that the chair was not anything like she remembered, referring to the fact that Mrs.
Wright has also changed since she

How Does Poe Create An Allegory In The Masque Of The Red...
Whether people acknowledge it or not, most people s greatest fear is death. In the short story,
The Masque of the Red Death, by E. Poe, he shows how people were trying to escape death, but
may not see what was to come. Early in the story, Prince Prospero and his friends were trying to
escape the red death. With this, the Prince throws a masquerade. Instead of seeing what was right in
front of them, they were too caught up in things that they could not see. To strengthen his allegoryof
life in The Masque of the Red Death, Poe expresses that avoiding something does not make it go
away through his portrayal of the castle, the courtiers, and rooms one and seven. Prince Prospero
lived in a very magnificent castle due to his immense wealth.... Show more content on

In Prince Prospero s castle, he had a hallway of seven rooms. The rooms went from one direction
to another, starting in the east, changing by color as they went. Poe mentioned, That at the
eastern extremity was hung, for example, in blue and vividly blue were its windows (84). The
symbol of the rooms one and seven represents new life and death. With this, Poe shows how the
room started in the eastern extremity, just as the sun rises from the east, and is blue just as blue
symbolizes life. Poe also writes, The seventh apartment was closely shrouded in black velvet
tapestries that hung down the walls (84). In this quote, he shows how the last room was black,
which symbolizes death. This last room was in the far western extremity. This shows that this
was the last room, and everything must end there. Consequently, many people did not notice the
two different colors in the room. The first color of that room was black, which was death. The
other color was red which can symbolize blood. Also, the colors of these rooms showed how the
death could not be kept out. Above all, these colors the stages of life. Therefore, the colors of the
rooms showed what was

How Brands Gain Successful Exposure On The Market, And The...
5.1 KNOW THE RULES
The main aim of this study was to investigate the ways brands gain successful exposure in the
market, and the way they build relationships with consumers. Upon researching, it was found that
there are certain brands that do not necessarily follow the current advised procedures for this
practice. One of these brands is Apple Inc., and being one of the most cherished brands of all times,
it was decided that an investigation on its consumers behaviour would possibly shed light over the
research question: Are there exceptions to the current rules in the practice of brand
communications and exposure? . To be able to raise the hypothesis of the exception, the current
procedures for successful brand exposure and communications, were examined and analysed, and
then compared to the survey s results on Apple s consumers opinions.
5.2 SUMMARY OF THE STUDY
The review of literature has provided important information on how the 21st century market is
shaped and influenced by the digital technologies. It was observed that the direct effect derived
from the cultural transformation of the digital ages, has created new ways of receiving information
and new forms of communication amongst people. Consequently, it has also altered relationships
between brands and consumers.
Most experts are suggesting that brands should adjust according to the new rules of the market,
which imply that online existence is essential for achieving successful brand communications and

Measuring Intelligence Through Objective, Culturally...
Maria Orrego PSYC 2001: Cross Cultural Psychology 13 March 2016 Measuring Intelligence
Through Objective, Culturally Unbiased Testing It takes something more than intelligence to act
intelligently. ― Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Crime and Punishment One might dare to define
intelligence as the ability to obtain and apply knowledge and skills, or as the capacity to learn,
comprehend, or deal with new or difficult situation in order to adapt to or modify our
environment or to process abstract thoughts. However, on a paper defined by Shane and Hutter
as a survey of a large number of informal definitions of intelligence that [they] collected over the
years (A Collection of Definitions, 2007), the authors acknowledged that a complete list would be
impossible as many definitions of intelligence are buried deep inside articles and books (idem).
Beyond their own recognition about the limits of their compilation, even after careful analysis
carried out by philosophers, psychologists and other scientists throughout human history, still there
is not a definite, cover all definition of intelligence. Maybe we still do not possess sufficient
intelligence to reach such achievement at this point of our evolution. Notwithstanding, for the
purposes of this work, I will attempt to provide a comprehensive definition or, should it be
possible, a series of definitions based on varied criteria. In attempting so, I will begin by taking
into consideration the categories proposed by

Compare And Contrast Dominican Republic And New York
Growing up as a child living in a Dominican household I have always heard that living in the
Dominican Republic and living in New york are complete two different environments and
lifestyles. Everybody who lives in the Dominican Republic has this american dream to come to
New York because it is a better environment and lifestyle. Two different things about the
Dominican Republic and New York is the weather and life style at home. When I was younger I
personally witness the lifestyle people lived in the Dominican Republic compared to New york.
In 2008 I visited my grandma home town in Santo domingo the capital of the Dominican
Republic where her home when you drive by was a house made of metal scraps and wood.
Compared to New york the house are made of bricks and wood. Besides that the biggest
difference of both lifestyle is the living environment of insides the homes. My grandmother use
to tell me that before I visited the Dominican Republic inside her home there was no doors in any
bedroom or bathroom, there was barely working lights on certain days, and worse part of all there
no hot water. She explained to me that they had to boil the water to a simmer to make it hot.Where

Contemporary Theories Of Subcultures
A subculture is considered a group of dominant people or culture that has been defined in its
norms, values, and interests, which are often inconsistent to those of large groups. (Bohm Vogel,
2011) Subcultures were created when a group of people that share the same beliefs or
circumstances finds themselves cut off from society. (Bohm Vogel, 2011) These groups are distinct
from those of the majority and are held by a group into a broader society. Most subcultures are
recognized by their age of its members, or by race, ethnicity, class, gender, and their qualities that
may be aesthetic, religious, occupational, political, and sexual or a combination of these factors.
However, people create subcultures as a way to feel accepted while also signifying that they are
different from other groups. The subculture theory focuses on consistent distinctiveness, identity,
commitment, and autonomy.
The first subculture group I would like to recognize is the police they are law enforcement officers
with specific types of attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. I place them in the subculture category
because of they spend their time dealing with crime; therefore they tend to be judgmental towards
members of the public viewing them as untrustworthy and potentially hostile; therefore, the public
view the police as being unreliable and abusive as well. The police depend on their cohorts to back
them up, and mostly teamwork to apprehend criminals; therefore, it creates a dynamic of police

Edward s Life Had Been Perfect
Edward slowly stalked out of the dark, dusty cell. A guard lay motionless next to the open door,
his throat slit and his face drained of color. He had been trapped in the tiny room for months and
he was finally free. He inhaled deeply, taking in the ancient, musty air. The corridor that
contained his cell was dark, damp, and humid. There were streaks of red along the walls, most
likely due to the massive iron deposits above his underground prison. Edward took all of this in
as he crept through the unlit hallway, a small, jagged piece of bloody glass in hand. Seven years
ago, Edward s life had been perfect. He was healthy, rich, and respected. Many people looked up to

Jetblue s Good Service Quality
ABSTRACT (Isabelle Aultman and Ben Cvek) In any business service quality is going to make or
break the company in the long run. JetBlue has great ideas on how to compete and how to be lower
priced while still gaining profit. Customer and provider gaps are all about what a customer expects,
what a customer perceives, what a customer is willing to accept, what a company understands about
those expectations, a company s communication both internal and external, and the company
systems and processes (Zeithaml, et al.,2013).
Although JetBlue had good service quality in place for the most part, it lacked the proper processes

Additionally, JetBlue targeted large metropolitan areas with high average fares to compete with the
larger airliners. Even small things such as more seats and a more fuel efficient aircraft increased
profits. Things seemed to be running great for JetBlue as they increased the number of destinations.
All of these things kept JetBlue profitable. It seems as though JetBlue has strayed from their
original core values, although, the company seems to be on the way to resolving the issues that
plague them.

From its very essences, JetBlue showed high signs of profitability, initially the company set out
to sell over five and a half million shares at an average of $25 per share. However, the company
actually topped off at $27 dollars selling almost 6 million in shares. Being in the airline industry

Mother To Son Tone
Mother to Son is by Langston Hughes and was published December 1922, in Crisis Magazine.
Mother to Son also reappeared in Hughes s first collection of poems called The Weary Blue in
1926. This monologue is delivering a message of hope through imagery. A mother was explaining
to her son that she has faced many challenges in life but she was still set on never giving up and
succeeding in life. The mom wanted to give her son the same advice that although things may get
hard and he may face many challenges and setbacks in life, she proclaimed that he should never
give up.
This poem is based on the idea of hope and reassurance to move on in life, regardless of all the
challenges that may come your way, or no matter how tough life may become. The mother displays
her love for her. The force behind her love is best stated through the idea of never giving up in
life period. The mother is constantly giving guidance and encouragement to her beloved son. The
mother has been faced with many challenges of life, and she wants her son to be brave and
confident in the face of these challenges that may occur and to also succeed in life. The poem
gives insight to the mother past experiences. The poems tone can be one that is best described as
moralizing, heartening, and hopeful. The message is relayed in this poem to the reader through the
conversation between the mother and her son. The mother states, Life for me ain t been no crystal

My Long Term Goal Is My Life
I would love to get back into running. It used to be a passion of mine, a way to relieve stress,
kept me in shape, and maintained my weight. Since I have stopped running there s no motivation
for physical activity, I m out of shape, and gained weight. My long term goal is to get back into
running everyday. It will put me back into a healthy lifestyle and will make me feel better over all.
If I do not return to running it will affect my physical health by making me gain more weight, and
continue to be out shape. This can make me become lazy. Socially it has affected me because I
pushed the friends I had away that I used to run with. I was ashamed to tell them that I was
getting lazy. Running used to help me clear my mind and allowed me to focus on priorities, but
now that I have stopped, I no longer can fully clear my mind. This is affecting my ability to
perform my best in school. Without running everyday, spiritually I feel like I ve just been going
through the motions of life, but not really living up to my potential. Since I pushed away all my
friend who supported my running, I do not have an environment that is supportive of physical
activity. All of these factors are making me live an unhealthy lifestyle.

which meant that they had wooden frames and the spaces between were filled with small sticks

Role Of Cancer As A Genetic Disease

ROLE OF ONCOGENES IN CANCER RESEARCH
1.Introduction
The idea that development of cancer as a genetic disease was first postulated by Cavenee et al and
developed by Fearon and Vogelstein. According to COSMIC (Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in
Cancer) database, the current list of known somatic genetic mutations leading to cancer is 522.
Genes which undergo mutations leading to cancer can be classified into two groups Proto
Oncogenes and Tumor Suppressor genes. Proto Oncogenes are the genes that are responsible for
cell proliferation i.e. they code for the proteins that are responsible for growth of cell. Tumor
Suppressor genes have an opposite effect and code for proteins that regulate cell cycle and ... Show

The first oncogene targeted anti cancerous agents are Gleevec and Herceptin. Gleevec is a small
molecule designed to target tyrosine kinase (enzymes that activate many proteins by signal
transduction cascades) encoded by bcr/abl oncogene. Herceptin is a monoclonal antibody which
interferes with the receptors responsible for activation of proteins which signal cell proliferation.
It was earlier thought that up to seven independent genetic hits are necessary for the development
and progression of a malignant cancer[Fearon ER and Vogelstein B, 1990], but recent studies
suggest that abnormal expression of only three genes might be sufficient for normal cells to convert
to cancer cells [Hahn WC et al 1999]. In one such case (H ras, hTERT, SV40LT) the cancer causing
genes were all dominant and transformed proto oncogenes. Also, in this case inactivation of a single
oncogene (e.g., mutant ras) can result in tumor regression which implies that in some cases (e.g.,
mutant ras) continuous expression of oncoproteins is functionally important, non redundant and
indispensable for sustained tumor growth despite a great number of genetic and epigenetic
complexities associated with tumor formation. This phenomena is called Oncogene Addiction and
it provides a rationale for targeted therapy. Thus, Oncogenes have attracted a great deal of interest
as molecular targets for cancer therapy in recent years.

Saudi Arabia Women Rights
Saudi Arabia is one of largest Muslim populated Countries in the world that follows the Islamic
culture. Their laws are called the Laws of God , which are interpreted from the Quran. The Laws
of God also known as the Sharia laws, these laws have abundant control on Saudi Arabian women,
Muslim citizens, and Non Muslim expats. Women of Saudi Arabiahave limited rights based on
their Islamic beliefs, but are gradually making progress to uplifting some restrictions. Muslim
citizens, both men and women have rigorous rules to follow, based on religious interpretation of
the Quran. Furthermore, Non Muslim citizens are stripped of their rights to Freedom of Religion,
which makes it very difficult to express your own spiritual beliefs.
Saudi Arabian women have numerous restrictions that must be followed. For example, driving is
believed to jeopardize social principles. Saudi Arabia s conservative religious establishment are
opposed to allowing women the right to drive, arguing that it would undermine social values (

Unit 5 Health And Social Care Communication Essay
Janes communication strengths and needs both directly and indirectly impact her and her family.
I will discuss these potential impacts by utilising the health and social care PIES model. Firstly, I
will discuss the physical influences which occurred because of Jane s TBI. Initially, the oro motor
assessment indicates that Jane s face is symmetrical and that she can accurately copy non speech
sounds. This is advantageous as she can swallow and eat her food successfully by manipulating
her tongue and moving the bolus to her oesophagus. Being able to swallow will give Jane
independence and will ensure her family does not have to feed her.
Additionally, the oro motor assessment reports that Jane can accurately copy speech sounds in

Social Construction Of Deviance And Crime
Interactionists do not believe that deviants and criminals are different to others, they believe that
everyone commits deviant acts however only some are caught, stigmatized and ridiculed for them.
Deviance and crime is relative to the time and place that you are living in. No particular action
itself is deviant or a crime is all depends on society, and how people react to it. Howard becker
stated that social groups create deviance by making rules whose infraction constitute deviance
(Becker, 1963) However functionalists would argue that we need consensus, and that these rules
that define deviance help to give our society order. (Thompson, 2011)
Becker may however argue that due to the social construction of deviance, it requires two groups

The Thin Ideal Is Being Pushed On Children
Now that it has been proven that the thin ideal is being pushed on children, children as young as
5, one should know the possibly consequences of its exposure. When children are constantly
being shown one certain ideal, it soon becomes internalize, which leads to behaviors that often go
unnoticed by parents. While these behaviors may seem harmless at first glance, they can be part
of a bigger unhealthier problem. In a study were young girls played with dolls with different body
proportions, and then were given snacks to eat, this was the result, they ate less food when they
played with the thin dolls than when they played with the average sized doll. (Anschutz et al) The

Clearly people have begun to more active, but more has to be done. Parents should get together
and be more involved with the type of media they expose their young girls and boys to. In the
world of social media, smart phones, and the Internet, there are now more ways than ever for
companies to push dangerous imagery towards children. Toys and dolls are not the only way for
a child to be targeted, and parents need restrict what their children are exposed to. It is
impossible to shield ones child to everything, but watching what toys you buy them, and what
kind of media they watch at home is a good way to start. Promoting body positivity and healthier
body images are ways to stop your kids from developing eating disorders, and self esteem issues
later in life. Parents play a huge role in shaping how kids think and feel about their bodies.
Starting to bolster kids body image early, even in preschool, can make a big difference in how kids
feel about themselves as they grow up. (Filucci) Teaching young children how media can be
manipulative can be a very important way to help them avoid internalizing harmful imagery, such
as the thin ideal. Communities should demand media illiteracy be taught in middle schools and
even elementary schools. One should not have to wait until they are in high school or college to
learn about the dangerous tactics that are used in the media, to indoctrinate the public. We know

Texting Is Not Safe ! Haha
I can not discuss this now. Driving and Facebooking is not safe! Haha. were the last words of
Taylor Sauer, before her car traveling at 80 mph slammed into a tanker truck (Hosansky 407). At
just 18, a Utah State University student lost her life due to the distraction that millions of
Americans find themselves facing: smartphones. While on her way to visiting family in Idaho, one
bad decision resulted in her death. I think she was probably texting to stay awake, she was probably
tired, stated her father. But that s not a reason to do it, and the kids think they re invincible. To
them, texting is not distracting; they are so proficient at texting that they don t feel it s distracted
driving. (Hosansky 407). Taylor s father raised an essential question: Are teenagers unaware of the
damage that their favorite devices can cause if misused? Smartphones raise a serious concern,
especially among parents. This is due to both the psychological damage and danger that
smartphones place on their children whose brains are not yet fully developed. According to a study
conducted on 404 undergraduate students, three fourths felt that they are dependent on their
phones.() The increasing use and popularity of smartphones are an issue that can cause relationship
issues, safety concerns, and distractions all which can be detrimental to society. One of the most
detrimental consequences of smartphones is the distraction they promote while driving. They are

Compare And Contrast The Santa Ana And Brush Fire
Different Things
People can look at the same situations and see different things. In Brush Fire by Linda Thomas and
The Santa Ana by Joan Didion, both writers are writing about the same situation however, the texts
are both vastly different. Both essays are written about the Santa Ana winds, which is a wind that
blows through both southern and northern California. The message of Brush Fire by Linda Thomas
is that the Santa Ana winds are more of an event that happens yearly that causes many great effects
on the earth that outway the bad. Nevertheless, in The Santa Ana by Joan Didion the message is
that the Santa Ana is a horrid occurrence that happens each year that only brings a string of
negative effects with it. The writers take a completely different approach, trying to describe the
subject. The author s writing style divert from each other through the use of style elements,
rhetorical and literary devices, as well as rhetorical appeals.
The Santa Ana and Brush Fire have several similarities and differences in style elements. The
Santa Ana and Brush Fire differ in the use of syntax. In The Santa Ana, Didion uses more
complex syntax with longer sentences and the text overall is longer. Dissimilar from Brush
Fire, in which Thomas uses a simpler syntax that has much shorter and concise sentences. The
Santa Ana also uses antithesis repeatedly, which establishes a juxtaposition, this shows the good
and bad of the situation. Thomas s sentences are shorter and more fact based which gets more to
the point faster and shorter. However, Didion s sentences are longer and more opinion and has a
more personal feel than, Brush Fire. The diction in The Santa Ana and Brush Fire differ vastly.
Thomas uses a more dark diction uses words like words like murder, suicide, and depression.
Unlike, Didion who has a more reflective diction and uses words like return , will be , new , and
cancels out . Both The Santa Ana and Brush Fire use a heavy use of imagery. In The Santa Ana
Didion not only describes the Santa Ana winds, but also describes other winds that are similar.
Didion compares the winds to show the negative effects that both winds have on the people. An
example of this is The Santa Ana,which is named for one

Literature Review On Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation
Literature Review
Introduction
Every day, men and women suffer from a stroke, when the arteries that bring blood to the brain are
clogged, essentially suffocating the brain. This then damages the brain, leaving the victim unable to
walk or speak properly. Oftentimes, these stroke patients can become hemiparetic, meaning that part
of their brain was damaged, and half of their body became disabled or unusable. However,
neuroscientists and physical therapists have developed a way to train the gait of these hemiparetic
stroke patients, allowing them to walk properly again, using Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation(Cha,
2013, Habib, 2009, McIntosh, 2010, Schneider, Suh, Thaut, 2010). As brain plasticity is damaged
severely during stroke, therapists must consider increasing the plasticity of the brain using
repetition, which RAS utilizes(Cesqui, 2017, Gloag, 1985, Habib, 2009, McIntosh,
2010,Särkämö, 2008, Schneider, 2010, Suh). Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation utilizes repetitive
rhythms in order to develop specific connections between the auditory and motor functions (Cha,
2013, Habib, 2009, McIntosh, 2010, Schneider, Suh, Thaut, 2010). The direct links between the
auditory and motor functions become critical in RAS, as the stimulation of the auditory functions
directly benefit the motor areas of the brain throughout RAS, benefiting gait in hemiparetic stroke
patients (Cha, 2013, Gloag, 1985,Habib, 2009, McIntosh, 2010, Morris, 2009, Särkämö, 2008,
Schneider, 2010, Suh, Thaut, 2010).

Battle Of Dunkirk Research Paper
World War II officially began on September 1, 1939 the invasion of Poland. Adolf Hitler was
wanting to conquer all of Europe and its living space. A military tactic used in World War II was
Blitzkrieg a tactic designed to create disorganization among enemy forces through the use of
mobile forces such as planes, artillery and tanks. Blitzkrieg meaning lightning war was first used
in the invasion of Poland and later on officially established in the Invasion of France,
Netherlands, and Belgium. Not only did the Germans use the tactic of blitzkrieg they also had a
powerful army that consisted of four groups the: Luftwaffe(Air Force) ,Weimar(Regular Nazi

Under Western Eyes By Kirylo Sidorovich Razumov
In 1911, Polish British novelist Joseph Conrad composed Under Western Eyes. Conrad is
commonly regarded as one of the greatest novelist ever to write in the English language due in large
part to his stylistic choices, philosophical insights, and general prose proficiency. Under Western
Eyes is a voluminous text with many philosophical undertones, a complex plot, and complicated
narrative structure. The protagonist of the story, Kirylo Sidorovich Razumov, experiences much
turmoil due to his betrayal of a fellow student and revolutionarynamed Victor Haldin, and finds his
entire existence convoluted new social ties, new emotions, and an inner moral conflict. The
question the novel raises has to do with Razumov s changed circumstances and how these affect his
character. Although it is tempting to see him as a transformed character, that interpretation is not
entirely persuasive. I would suggest that Razumov is, from beginning to end, marked by his
inveterate independent nature as an incorrigible loner.
In the beginning of the novel Razumov s character is introduced. He leads a solitary life, having
no family, friends or real purpose and is therefore independent. These characteristics are relayed
by the narrator, who has read Razumov s diary and thus is able to speak with some authority
about Razumov s qualities as a person. After reading the diary, the narrator notes in the beginning
of the story, The word Razumov was the mere label of a solitary individuality. . . . His

According to the study, by the Treatment Advocacy Center, psychiatric beds are now available at a
level equivalent to that of 1850 (Torrey et al., 2012), the point in history at which the treatment of
the mentally ill started to change with a shift to state run facilities.
One of the major consequences of this crisis is seen in jails and prisons around the nation that are
increasingly populated by individuals with untreated mental illness, with some facilities reporting
that one third or more of their inmates are severely mentally ill. (Torrey et al., 2012. p. 6). One
measure of the social and economic costs of this systemic failure is the remarkably high rate of
recidivism and the associated social fallout. In California close to 80% of all persons released from
prison will return to a state of incarceration within 1 3 years of release. An overwhelming number
of these returning inmates are doing so as a function of their failure to meet or carry out terms of
release, not for the commission of new crimes (Maxwell Royo, 2005). Economically speaking, a
person incarcerated in a State Prison in California costs the state on average $49,000 a year to
house, feed and protect. Amplify that by the latest number of prisoners in state facilities,
approximately 119,000 and we arrive at the staggering figure of $5,831,000,000, wasted funds that
could have been spent in the community. Considering that California

your opponent. Next you are going to want to push your chest up against your opponent s thighs

Typically, the lower part of the leg is pulled in one direction, while the torso or shoulder is used
to press the body or upper part of the leg of the opponent in the other direction. Another great
takedown is the duck under. In a duck under, the wrestler pulls the opponent s elbow forward and
away from the body, lowers his own head, and ducks under the opponent s arm in an effort to get
behind or at least beside the opponent; from this position the opponent can be taken down by
lifting and throwing or by a leg trip. Then for the best and most used move everyone uses in
wrestling, the half nelson. The half nelson is referred to by most coaches as being the easiest, but
most effective move in folkstyle wrestling (Wrestling Moves). It involves you using only one
hand, by passing it under the arm of the opponent and locking the hand on the opponent s neck.
Then you will run him over until his back is fully on the mat. Then you will want to get chest to
chest to make sure that he can t get out of it. You will hold it there until he is pinned or until you

A Case Study On Southwest And Will Address Acquisitions
Mergers and acquisitions have always been around and have been popular in the United States
for decades. It has been said that that mergers and acquisitions have contributed to the
reconstruction of businesses during the 80 s and 90 s. The following is an analysis of a case
study on Southwest and will address acquisitions, mergers, and restructuring. Acquisitions are
popular in the United States and there are many reasons why a company decides to acquire
another company. Companies will decide to acquire a business in order to increase market
power. Market power happens when a company sells its good or services above competitive
levels. If a company attains a high market power, it can become a leader (Hitt, Ireland,
Hoskisson, 2015). Acquisitions that are competing in the same industry as the acquiring firm is
called a Horizontal acquisitions Horizontal acquisitions also increase a company s market power.
According to the class textbook, horizontal acquisition are a result in higher performance when a
company have similar characteristics (Hitt, Ireland, Hoskisson, 2015). For example, has somewhat
of the same strategy and decision making styles. Another type of acquisition is vertical
acquisitions, which refers to a company who purchases a supplier or a distribution of products they

The Tragedy Of The Commons Essay
The Tragedy of the Commons American Earth: Environmental Writing Since Thoreau is a diverse
yet interconnected collection of essays by renowned environmentalist authors who have been
influential in literature, religion, science, and politics. Each piece has a specific purpose and role
that it plays in conveying ideas and themes. Many authors share their personal opinions on issues
such as the world s declining forests, the extinction of species, as well their intimate experiences
with nature. However, the most influential essay in this book is The Tragedy of the Commonsby
Garrett Hardin (438). A multitude of pieces in this book tie into the tragedy of the commons and
support its ideas in one way or another.
In his essay Hardin discusses how the rapid decline of the world s common places, such as natural
animal pastures, are the result of rapid, uncontrolled human population growth. Hardin suggests that
environmental problems such as deforestation, crowding out of native species, loss of resources,
pollution, poor job economy, etc., are the result of the loss of common spaces. He indicated that
common spaces used to be plentiful enough for every person to have an abundant share, but that
was when the human population was smaller than the current population of 7 billion people. Hardin
s powerful essay proposes many solutions and methods for solving the ever increasing tragedy of
the commons.

We have learned from the past and have great leaders, black and white.
The civil war was a major event in the history of Mississippi. The president during this time was
Jefferson Davis during the years of 1861 1865. Mississippi was the second state to secede from
the union. The view of the state was that it was necessity for the state to have slavery. So the white
soldiers fought for the stand of keeping the slaves. Since they believed that the white citizens
needed the slaves. Many of the battles were along the line of the Mississippi river. There were more
than about 17,000 black men (Mississippi slaves) as well as freedmen that fought for the Union.
There were 500 white men that fought for the Union as well. Many soldiers were upset when
they realized that the war would be lost. In present time, it seemed that slavery was such a long
time ago and long lost. What the people of Mississippi don t realize the actual affect that it had.
The men that were lost during the time period had wives and children that they left behind to
start a new generation of what the fathers fought for. Too look at the past to the present time,
Mississippi has come a long way with the respect for one another as well as the agriculture and
economy needs of the residents. They often prefer to be called Mississippians, but they sure love
were they came from and

The Life of Paul Mccartney
Sir Paul McCartney 1. The individual I have chosen to do my biography assignment on is Paul
McCartney. 2. Paul was born June 18, 1982 in the Anfield section of Liverpool, England; where
his family has been for generations. 3. Paul McCartney is a world famous singer songwriter and
musician, most famous as a member of the iconic pop rock band The Beatlesalong with John
Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. After The Beatles, he formed, and was the frontman for,
the band Wings. 4. Paul McCartneywas always regarded as the the cute Beatle . He had a baby face

He hadn t even tried to cover up the drug; it was right on top for everyone to see. This resulted in
Paul going to jail for ten day s in Japan and The Beatles tour of Japan being cancelled. There was
also a time when police found strange plants growing at Paul s farm in Scotland the Mull of
Kintyre. Paul was also a frequent user of LSD and although not as much as his counterpart, John
Lennon, Paul also experimented with cocaine and heroin. If I were in Paul s shoes it would ve
been very hard to stay away from the drugs because they were all around him and being a rock
star gave him easy access to all of the drugs he wanted. I would have tried my best to stay away
from all of the drugs, and even if I did happen to use a bit now or then, I would use much less
than Paul did. Also, Paul made his affection for drugs, especially marijuana and LSD, very
public. I would ve kept that more to myself to keep a better public image. 11. Paul s life has had
an impact on millions of people around the world for many, many years. From the thousands of
girls screaming his name and passing out at the sight of him, to the countless people he continues
to inspire with his great musical abilities and success. Through Paul s success he has become a
very influential person and he can easily impact people. The impact Paul has had on people is a
very positive one. He, along with the three other Beatles revolutionized music and helped inspire a

  • 2. The Intersection Of Social Movements And Art The intersection of social movements and Art is one that can be observed throughout the civil right movements of America in the 1960 s and early 1970 s. The sixties in America saw a substantial cultural and social change through activism against the Vietnam war, women s right and against the segregation of the African American communities. Art became a prominent method of activism to advocate the civil rights movement. It was a way to express self identity as well as the struggle that people went through and by means of visual imagery a way to show political ideals and forms of resistance. To examine how a specific movement can have a profound effects on the visual art, this essay will focus on the black art movement of the 1960s and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Secondly, observing the work of Emma Amos who was the only women within the spiral group. Romare Bearden, started his artistic career being an abstractionist, however the civil right movement had an impact on his art which lead him to the creation of the group called spiral. With the help of other black artists, Bearden sought to reflect how they could portray their connection to the civil right movement through their arts as a racial group minority. Ralph Ellison (1977), mentions the anachronism of the American social experience of minority artists which could then be used to understand the motivation behind the art of Bearden. This anachronism refers to; The imbalance in American society which leads to a distorted perception of social reality, to a stubborn blindness to the creative possibilities of cultural diversity, to the prevalence of negative myth, racial stereotypes and dangerous illusion about art, humanities and society. (Ellison: 1977 : pp.673) It is then argued that many artists are often majorly influenced by the power of this anachronism, as their culture as well as the freedom of representing their self identity through aesthetic technique of self expression that are already existing. This, then restrict their attempt to seek change of the complex social situation they experience. Meanwhile, it is said that Bearden attempt not to follow the anachronism in is art by transforming it into a component of art as a mean of personal vision (Ellison: ... One thing about cannibalism is that it used to be considered a normal part of life, and has only recently been seen as taboo in the recent centuries. Many people believe Cannibalismshould be legal world wide, but only have reasoning s of culture and religions. Cannibalism should be illegal because of immorality, diseases , and murder by eating someone s flesh. The History of Cannibalism is small, yet widely spread around the world. The Korowai Tribe has been around since 1974, they are known for killing outsiders, and to be afraid of pale skinned people (Raffaele). If Cannibalism stays legal, the isolated tribes could possibly expand, and want to kill any pale skinned person, or anyone not from their tribe. The Carib tribe was the first known tribe to commit acts of cannibalism to their enemies, which became increasingly rare once the introduction of Christianity was introduced in the area (Mind Q). Once the human race became more active in moral behavior, Cannibalism was outcast, giving it no reason to be legal within our current society. The Discovery Of The Polio Vaccine Ashley Anderson Professor Giunta CHS 113 01 23 April 2017 In this term paper the discovery of the Polio vaccine will be discussed and broken down into deeper thought on why and how it was discovered. Poliomyelitis is an infectious disease that reached epidemic levels in the mid twentieth century. People that were unfortunate to receive this disease faced hardships including fevers, sore throat and vomiting(Allaby). These are just symptoms but Polio can be a vicious disease leaving their patients paralyzed. The majority of people who are diagnosed with Polio don t get paralyzed right away or die suddenly. These other scientists include Thomas Francis, Jr. who Salk worked with for a year in microbiology and resulting in Francis isolating two types of influenza virus(Allaby). Microbiologist John Enders, virologists Frederick Robbins and Thomas Weller all influenced Salk to find the breakthrough he so desperately needed. Both virologists grown viruses in tissue taken from a living organism using penicillin to keep the object free from infection(Allaby). This was a breakthrough for Salk because he copied their procedure and used viruses from the spinal cords of polio patients and grew them in another object to test on(Allaby). Jonas Silk has always been involved with medical science throughout his entire life. He attends and graduates in surgery from the City College of New York. In 1938 when Salk works with Thomas Francis he was introduced to finding the influenza vaccine(Allaby). This is the event that made Salk interested in finding out more about viruses and urges him to want to find a vaccine for a disease. Salk ended up working on a influenza vaccine at the Virus Research Unit of the University of Michigan School of Public Health(Allaby). From working on the influenza vaccine Salk had the opportunity to become the head of the virus research laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh in 1947(Allaby). This is where and when Salk decides to begin his work on the polio vaccine. The testing Salk produced with the Polio virus in the spinal cords, they revealed that there ... This explains for the reasoning of their house being far set back into the woods and having no telephone service. She ventured out, only when she was allowed, and assuming that John also did not allow her to have friends, this led to the killing of the canary. • 9. How Does Poe Create An Allegory In The Masque Of The Red... Whether people acknowledge it or not, most people s greatest fear is death. In the short story, The Masque of the Red Death, by E. Poe, he shows how people were trying to escape death, but may not see what was to come. Early in the story, Prince Prospero and his friends were trying to escape the red death. With this, the Prince throws a masquerade. Instead of seeing what was right in front of them, they were too caught up in things that they could not see. To strengthen his allegoryof life in The Masque of the Red Death, Poe expresses that avoiding something does not make it go away through his portrayal of the castle, the courtiers, and rooms one and seven. With this, Poe shows how the room started in the eastern extremity, just as the sun rises from the east, and is blue just as blue symbolizes life. Poe also writes, The seventh apartment was closely shrouded in black velvet tapestries that hung down the walls (84). In this quote, he shows how the last room was black, which symbolizes death. This last room was in the far western extremity. This shows that this was the last room, and everything must end there. Consequently, many people did not notice the two different colors in the room. Upon researching, it was found that there are certain brands that do not necessarily follow the current advised procedures for this practice. One of these brands is Apple Inc., and being one of the most cherished brands of all times, it was decided that an investigation on its consumers behaviour would possibly shed light over the research question: Are there exceptions to the current rules in the practice of brand communications and exposure? . To be able to raise the hypothesis of the exception, the current procedures for successful brand exposure and communications, were examined and analysed, and then compared to the survey s results on Apple s consumers opinions. 5.2 SUMMARY OF THE STUDY The review of literature has provided important information on how the 21st century market is shaped and influenced by the digital technologies. It was observed that the direct effect derived from the cultural transformation of the digital ages, has created new ways of receiving information and new forms of communication amongst people. Maria Orrego PSYC 2001: Cross Cultural Psychology 13 March 2016 Measuring Intelligence Through Objective, Culturally Unbiased Testing It takes something more than intelligence to act intelligently. ― Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Crime and Punishment One might dare to define intelligence as the ability to obtain and apply knowledge and skills, or as the capacity to learn, comprehend, or deal with new or difficult situation in order to adapt to or modify our environment or to process abstract thoughts. However, on a paper defined by Shane and Hutter as a survey of a large number of informal definitions of intelligence that [they] collected over the years (A Collection of Definitions, 2007), the authors acknowledged that a complete list would be impossible as many definitions of intelligence are buried deep inside articles and books (idem). Beyond their own recognition about the limits of their compilation, even after careful analysis carried out by philosophers, psychologists and other scientists throughout human history, still there is not a definite, cover all definition of intelligence. Maybe we still do not possess sufficient intelligence to reach such achievement at this point of our evolution. Contemporary Theories Of Subcultures A subculture is considered a group of dominant people or culture that has been defined in its norms, values, and interests, which are often inconsistent to those of large groups. (Bohm Vogel, 2011) Subcultures were created when a group of people that share the same beliefs or circumstances finds themselves cut off from society. (Bohm Vogel, 2011) These groups are distinct from those of the majority and are held by a group into a broader society. Most subcultures are recognized by their age of its members, or by race, ethnicity, class, gender, and their qualities that may be aesthetic, religious, occupational, political, and sexual or a combination of these factors. However, people create subcultures as a way to feel accepted while also signifying that they are different from other groups. The subculture theory focuses on consistent distinctiveness, identity, commitment, and autonomy. The first subculture group I would like to recognize is the police they are law enforcement officers with specific types of attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. I place them in the subculture category because of they spend their time dealing with crime; therefore they tend to be judgmental towards members of the public viewing them as untrustworthy and potentially hostile; therefore, the public view the police as being unreliable and abusive as well. The police depend on their cohorts to back them up, and mostly teamwork to apprehend criminals; therefore, it creates a dynamic of police ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Genes which undergo mutations leading to cancer can be classified into two groups Proto Oncogenes and Tumor Suppressor genes. The first oncogene targeted anti cancerous agents are Gleevec and Herceptin. Gleevec is a small molecule designed to target tyrosine kinase (enzymes that activate many proteins by signal transduction cascades) encoded by bcr/abl oncogene. Herceptin is a monoclonal antibody which interferes with the receptors responsible for activation of proteins which signal cell proliferation. It was earlier thought that up to seven independent genetic hits are necessary for the development and progression of a malignant cancer[Fearon ER and Vogelstein B, 1990], but recent studies suggest that abnormal expression of only three genes might be sufficient for normal cells to convert to cancer cells [Hahn WC et al 1999]. In one such case (H ras, hTERT, SV40LT) the cancer causing genes were all dominant and transformed proto oncogenes. Also, in this case inactivation of a single oncogene (e.g., mutant ras) can result in tumor regression which implies that in some cases (e.g., mutant ras) continuous expression of oncoproteins is functionally important, non redundant and indispensable for sustained tumor growth despite a great number of genetic and epigenetic complexities associated with tumor formation. This phenomena is called Oncogene Addiction and it provides a rationale for targeted therapy. Thus, Oncogenes have attracted a great deal of interest as molecular targets for cancer therapy in recent years. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Social Construction Of Deviance And Crime Interactionists do not believe that deviants and criminals are different to others, they believe that everyone commits deviant acts however only some are caught, stigmatized and ridiculed for them. Deviance and crime is relative to the time and place that you are living in. No particular action itself is deviant or a crime is all depends on society, and how people react to it. Howard becker stated that social groups create deviance by making rules whose infraction constitute deviance (Becker, 1963) However functionalists would argue that we need consensus, and that these rules that define deviance help to give our society order. Haha. were the last words of Taylor Sauer, before her car traveling at 80 mph slammed into a tanker truck (Hosansky 407). In Brush Fire by Linda Thomas and The Santa Ana by Joan Didion, both writers are writing about the same situation however, the texts are both vastly different. Both essays are written about the Santa Ana winds, which is a wind that blows through both southern and northern California. The message of Brush Fire by Linda Thomas is that the Santa Ana winds are more of an event that happens yearly that causes many great effects on the earth that outway the bad. Nevertheless, in The Santa Ana by Joan Didion the message is that the Santa Ana is a horrid occurrence that happens each year that only brings a string of negative effects with it. The writers take a completely different approach, trying to describe the subject. The author s writing style divert from each other through the use of style elements, rhetorical and literary devices, as well as rhetorical appeals. The Santa Ana and Brush Fire have several similarities and differences in style elements. The Santa Ana and Brush Fire differ in the use of syntax. In The Santa Ana, Didion uses more complex syntax with longer sentences and the text overall is longer. Dissimilar from Brush Fire, in which Thomas uses a simpler syntax that has much shorter and concise sentences. The Santa Ana also uses antithesis repeatedly, which establishes a juxtaposition, this shows the good and bad of the situation. Thomas s sentences are shorter and more fact based which gets more to the point faster and shorter. However, Didion s sentences are longer and more opinion and has a more personal feel than, Brush Fire. The diction in The Santa Ana and Brush Fire differ vastly. Thomas uses a more dark diction uses words like words like murder, suicide, and depression. • 33. Literature Review On Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation Literature Review Introduction Every day, men and women suffer from a stroke, when the arteries that bring blood to the brain are clogged, essentially suffocating the brain. This then damages the brain, leaving the victim unable to walk or speak properly. Oftentimes, these stroke patients can become hemiparetic, meaning that part of their brain was damaged, and half of their body became disabled or unusable. However, neuroscientists and physical therapists have developed a way to train the gait of these hemiparetic stroke patients, allowing them to walk properly again, using Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation(Cha, 2013, Habib, 2009, McIntosh, 2010, Schneider, Suh, Thaut, 2010). As brain plasticity is damaged severely during stroke, therapists must consider increasing the plasticity of the brain using repetition, which RAS utilizes(Cesqui, 2017, Gloag, 1985, Habib, 2009, McIntosh, 2010,SГ¤rkГ¤mГ¶, 2008, Schneider, 2010, Suh). Rhythmic Auditory Stimulation utilizes repetitive rhythms in order to develop specific connections between the auditory and motor functions (Cha, 2013, Habib, 2009, McIntosh, 2010, Schneider, Suh, Thaut, 2010). The direct links between the auditory and motor functions become critical in RAS, as the stimulation of the auditory functions directly benefit the motor areas of the brain throughout RAS, benefiting gait in hemiparetic stroke patients (Cha, 2013, Gloag, 1985,Habib, 2009, McIntosh, 2010, Morris, 2009, SГ¤rkГ¤mГ¶, 2008, Schneider, 2010, Suh, Thaut, 2010). ... • 37. Under Western Eyes By Kirylo Sidorovich Razumov In 1911, Polish British novelist Joseph Conrad composed Under Western Eyes. Conrad is commonly regarded as one of the greatest novelist ever to write in the English language due in large part to his stylistic choices, philosophical insights, and general prose proficiency. Under Western Eyes is a voluminous text with many philosophical undertones, a complex plot, and complicated narrative structure. The protagonist of the story, Kirylo Sidorovich Razumov, experiences much turmoil due to his betrayal of a fellow student and revolutionarynamed Victor Haldin, and finds his entire existence convoluted new social ties, new emotions, and an inner moral conflict. The question the novel raises has to do with Razumov s changed circumstances and how these affect his character. Although it is tempting to see him as a transformed character, that interpretation is not entirely persuasive. I would suggest that Razumov is, from beginning to end, marked by his inveterate independent nature as an incorrigible loner. In the beginning of the novel Razumov s character is introduced. He leads a solitary life, having no family, friends or real purpose and is therefore independent. These characteristics are relayed by the narrator, who has read Razumov s diary and thus is able to speak with some authority about Razumov s qualities as a person. After reading the diary, the narrator notes in the beginning of the story, The word Razumov was the mere label of a solitary individuality. . . . His ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One of the major consequences of this crisis is seen in jails and prisons around the nation that are increasingly populated by individuals with untreated mental illness, with some facilities reporting that one third or more of their inmates are severely mentally ill. (Torrey et al., 2012. p. 6). One measure of the social and economic costs of this systemic failure is the remarkably high rate of recidivism and the associated social fallout. In California close to 80% of all persons released from prison will return to a state of incarceration within 1 3 years of release. An overwhelming number of these returning inmates are doing so as a function of their failure to meet or carry out terms of release, not for the commission of new crimes (Maxwell Royo, 2005). Economically speaking, a person incarcerated in a State Prison in California costs the state on average $49,000 a year to house, feed and protect.
