Fed Up Documentary Analysis
Fed Up
Stephanie Soechtig, is an award winning film maker, and director and producer of the nonfiction
documentary Fed Up. She began producing documentaries for network news programs such as
Primetime Live and 20/20, while also working for Good Morning America during the 2000
presidential elections and the O Reilly Factor. In 2008, Soechtig partnered with Michael and Michelle
Walrath to start Atlas Films, which provided inspiration and education to consumers on the most
controversial topics. So far, Soechtig has been awarded the Best Documentary Feature for Tapped
(2009), People s Choice Award for Under the Gun (2016), and Fortune Magazine named Soechtig as
being one of the Most Innovative Women in Food and Drink (Biography). In 2014, Soechtig s Grand
Jury Prize nominated film Fed Up (2014), narrated by TV Journalist Katie Couric, was created in
hopes of unveiling the hidden secrets of the food industry by using statistical analysis and research
expert s testimonies to inform viewers of the direct impact that the food industry has on the health of
our nation s most vulnerable population children. Soechtig and Couric present the argument that the
roles of our government along with the interests and processing methods of food industries are
ultimately responsible for the increasing rates of childhood obesity in the United States.
According to the World Health Organization, the term obese refers to the excess fat buildup that can
become harmful to one s health

Use Of Inferential Statistics And Apply It For A Research...
The purpose of this assignment is to use inferential statistics and apply it to a research question. The
research question consists of two variables, the first variable is gender and the second variable is
knowledge about their target blood pressure. In order to analyze the two variables within a sample, the
writer will go through seven hypothesis testing steps, with the results obtained a discussion of the
finding will be provided, implications to research and nursing practice explored and lastly a discussion
on demographic data from the previous assignment.
Hypothesis Testing
There are seven steps that will be used within this paper to test a hypothesis. These steps include the
following; Step 1: which is stating the null hypothesis, stating the research hypothesis, identifying the
target population and sample population, identifying the independent variable and dependent variable.
Step 2: establishing the level of significance. Step 3: selecting a one tailed or two tailed test. Step 4:
conducting the test and excel and providing the results as an excel output. Step 5: calculating the
degree of freedom. Step 6: stating the critical value to exceed by the calculated test statistic. Lastly,
Step 7: comparing the calculated test statistic and to the level of significance and making a decision
about the results. The following steps will be explained in further detail below.
Question One: Step 1 of Hypothesis Testing

The Effects Of Television On Our Health
Jacoby stated in his article Silent that Idiot box that letting your children watch too much television
can ruin them in the long run. Television has the ability to lead children to violence and destroy their
innocence. Television can be pleasing to the eye. According to Jacoby children don t become educated
from watching TV. The more TV they watch, the less educated they usually end up. I agree with him
because when I use to watch television I would feel extremely sluggish and not want to do anything
else. Watching television can have some effects towards your overall health. It also can lead to bad
habits and prevents you from having a better outlook on life around you.
Watching too much television can have a serious effect on one s motivation and abilities to interact
with the outside world. For example, Scarface is about Gang related activities and Drug abuse and is
very aggressive. It can be so engrossing. It can make a child wonder what his life would be like if he
was in the main character s shoes. If parents watch a violent show or movie with their young children
around, the children will have problems. They will develop learning difficulties and have trouble
paying attention in class. Not communicating with your friends and family is also a health problem, a
person could get depressed, have social anxiety, or become delusional. People can even become sleep
deprived.
What normally happens when you watch television? You usually stay there dazed for many of

Essay on Impact of the Eiffel Tower on Society
Built in 1889 to commemorate the hundred year anniversary of the French Revolution, the Eiffel
Tower has been a topic of discussion for numerous years. Designed by Gustave Eiffel and Morris
Koechlin, the Tower was built originally as a temporary structure. The pieces of this eye catching
building were to be disassembled and melted down after twenty years. This did not happen, however.
The Eiffel Tower has become a colossal icon throughout the world; the Tower has brought in
enormous revenue and has a scientific impact on French and all of Europe s society. The Eiffel Tower
has become associated with Paris; a symbol. It is an icon for France, travel and romance, among
others. What made this Tower vastly popular is the cause of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

What else makes this Tower iconic is who it was designed by. Morris Koechlin, co designer of the
Eiffel Tower, also designed the Statues of Liberty in 1887. The Tower being built by an already
famous architect gives it more initial appeal to the general public. He knew what to use for the specific
requirements of the particular structure. For the Statue of Liberty, he used copper. But climate,
location and use required a different material for the Eiffel Tower in Paris. As a result, Koechlin and
Eiffel used iron for the Eiffel Tower. Using the correct material allowed the edifice to stand tall for
several years. A symbol is everlasting. For the Tower to be infinite, it must be made from a strong
material that can endure any condition. In the storm in 1999, the building swayed thirteen centimeters
but remained secure. In heat, the Iron Lady can move up to eighteen centimeters. This proves in its
ability to withstand a vast variety of conditions. This ensures that it is eternal which is necessary to
mold it into an icon of a prosperous and exquisite city that is Paris. The original Eiffel Tower is so
famous and iconic that it has inspired others to create replicas. One famous example is the one in Las
Vegas, Nevada. Standing only half the size of the primary

Comparing Christmas And Hanukkah
Despite being the product of separate, largely dissimilar religions, Christmas and Hanukkah fulfill a
similar goal. Although the specific food traditions throughout Christianity and Judaism differ greatly,
the role of food in these holidays is largely the same. Food is imbued with a sense of remembrance
and reverence, creating a level of similarity between two very distinct traditions.
Hanukkah, or the Festival of Lights, is a central holiday in modern Judaism. Although it is not a
Biblical holiday, it marks a significant cultural event in Jewish history, commemorating the
Maccabean revolt and subsequent rededication of the temple by Judah Maccabee. Central to the
holiday is the miracle of oil, whereby a single container of holy oil, one day s ... Show more content

Turkey is common, although other large birds are often substituted. In predominantly Catholic parts of
Europe, the traditional Christmas dinner is The Vigil, a feast comprised of seven varieties of fish either
baked or fried in oil. This stems from the Catholic tradition of avoiding meat on some holidays, and
incorporates a lesson on Catholic numerology into the meal. While there has been some effort to
incorporate Christian lessons and stories into Christmas foods, such as candy canes, the spiritual
aspect of Christmas food is still fairly nebulous in its presentation. Because it draws from such diverse
cultural backgrounds, as opposed to the less varied cultural heritage of Judaism, food is not as highly
valued as a teaching tool. That is not to say there is no religious motivation behind Christmas food, or
that there are no parallels to traditional Hanukkah foods, but these parallels and motivations are
superficial at best. Instead, one must look at the overarching themes behind Christmas and Hanukkah
food traditions in order to find a connection. While there are few similarities between the Christian
and Jewish traditions, they both mark a significant event in their religion, and they both commemorate
it with food. Food as a tool of reverence, then, is a common thread between

Essay on Fuel Economy in American Automobiles
Fuel efficiency in automobiles has become a topic of much discussion in recent years in the United
States. This is due largely to the environmental devastation that fuel emissions cause, but it is also
sparked by the rising fuel costs. Making cars with high fuel efficiency not only saves consumers
money, but also will drastically reduce the pollution that is caused by emissions. Today automakers
are putting a tremendous amount of effort into making their cars more fuel efficient, both to meet
government regulations and to make their car more appealing to the consumer. During the late 1900 s,
fuel efficiency was given very little thought by automakers. Instead, they competed with each other by
coming out with larger and more powerful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first law that was passed to enforce this was the Energy Policy and Conservation Act, which was
passed by Congress in 1975. This law established a Corporate Average Fuel Economy program,
commonly known as the CAFE program, and it required automakers to drastically increase the fuel
efficiency of their vehicles. Consequently, by 1985, the average fuel efficiency of automobiles had
risen to 27.5 miles per gallon, which is very close to what it is today (Bezdek 132,133). Because
CAFE did not change the fuel efficiency standard until years later, by the early 1980 s most
automakers had met the fuel efficiency that was required for their automobiles, so they started to pay
more attention to the size and power of their vehicles. Instead of building cars with better gas mileage
each year, they built their cars bigger and with more power, while keeping the fuel efficiency just high
enough so that it met CAFE standards. Accordingly, the gas mileage of vehicles has not increased
significantly since the 1980 s (Bezdek 133). In fact, the average fuel efficiency of new passenger
vehicles steadily declined from the 1980 s until 2004. This was due to the loopholes which car
manufacturers found in the CAFE standards. CAFE treated light trucks much more leniently than cars,
and allowed them to have considerably less fuel efficiency than cars. This caught the attention of car
manufacturers, who then looked at how CAFE defined a light truck. They

Protein Chromatography
Protein properties are directly affected by their environment, which depends on pH, temperature,
solvent effects, and pressure. With these affects has come more desire for better techniques in the
purification and separation processes. These processes hopefully will prevent loss of biological
activity and denaturation. With ion exchange chromatography comes many advantages over column
chromatography such as union between the target protein and functional groups at a very quick rate,
exponential growth without difficulty, short processing times, no heating, no extreme pH range, and a
multitude of other things (Santos et al. 2012). Ion exchange chromatography in short is ideal due to

The first included Cibacron Blue Sepharose CL 6B, proteins, and egg white lysozyme. They tested the
proteins and egg whites binding ability to the Cibacron Blue. To make matters easier, they only
searched for absorption of pure proteins from 0.05 M Tris HCl buffer, pH 7.2. This was achieved by
eluting the absorbed proteins with 1M KCl In in 0.05 M Tris HCl buffer. The second type included
immobilized monoclonal antibodies and the absorption of E. Coli B galactosidase against B
galactosidase. This was chosen due to the simplicity of measuring the activity of B galactosidase that
could then tell us the concentration of the antigen. The only downside to this approach was B
galactosidase has a much higher molecular weight that most antigens commonly used by this method.
This means the large molecule will have trouble penetrating the pores in the immuno absorbents. This
was done by immobilizing the antibodies on a silica based adsorbent, which was then added to PBS
buffer. The buffer contained antibodies. The flask they were in was then shaken for four hours,
followed by removal of all the unreacted protein that was done by using a funnel with sodium chloride
solution. To wash the gel they used propionic acid and then stored the adsorbent in PBS buffer. Finally
to elute the absorbed B galactosidase, they used 6 M urea in 20 mM Tris HCl, 10 mM ethylene
diamine tetraacetic acid, and 10 mM sodium Chloride, 0.1 M 2 mercaptoethanol, pH 7.2 (Chase

Tradition In Shirley Jackson s The Lottery
Who would not want to win a lottery? When you read the title of the short story The Lottery , you
would think that it is about winning a large amount of money. Shirley Jackson s short story The
Lottery was published in 1948 and the short story has a very different way of playing lottery. In this
short story, tradition plays a big role and you can ask yourself the question: Would you follow a
tradition blindly or would you stand against the authority?
The short story starts with an introduction of the setting. The reader gets details of the scene and an
introduction of the characters. It is June 27 and it is the day of the lottery. This is a very important day
in the short story and the duration of the story is one day. The setting is described ... Show more

When the ready gets to know the true purpose of the lottery it intends to frighten and shock the reader.
In the beginning of the short story, we see the children playing with stones and as a reader, it can first
be read as something childish until we finish the short story and get to know the real purpose of the
stones. The story is told by a third person objective narrator and this point of view influences the story
because we do not get to read the characters thoughts or feelings and the narrator simply describes the
process of the lottery. The horror genre is also shown in the narrator s writing style. The story s
narration show no empathy and the villagers see the lottery as something very natural and it is also
said in the beginning of the short story that they like to finish the lottery in time for lunch. No emotion
is shown and they are just following the tradition . They just want to finish the business as it was
nothing meaningful. The tone in the short story does not change. There is no tone shift from the author
when we go from reading about a sunny day in a small village to the horrific scene of the villagers
executing one of their members. It gives a very cynical tone to the short

Argumentative Essay On Massage Therapy
What does back pain, neck tension, headaches and anxiety all have in common? They are all treatable
issues that can be relieved or treated through massage therapy. Stress related symptoms are one
potential treatment option for massage therapy. Massage may also be used to treat muscular pain
following strenuous exercise. Tiffany Field, head of Psychology at the University of Miami School of
Medicine s Touch Research Institute, explains that massage can limit our bodies fight or flight
response associated with stressful or fearful situations. In university, many students will experience
stressful moments with assignments, exams, and projects. What many students are unaware of, is how
stress negatively impacts mental and physical health. Through the use of massage therapy, students
can relieve stress and even sleep better at night. Massage can be used to cope with mood disorders and
relieve muscle pain or tension. Field explains massage can increase blood flow and circulation of
oxygen or nutrients throughout the muscles, as a method of removing metabolic wastes such as lactic
acid that are produced through exercise (58). Massage is an excellent treatment for stress, pain, and
sleep deprivation. With a massage therapy clinic on campus, charging at reduced rates, students would
benefit by having the opportunity to improve their quality of sleep, limit emotional issues they may be
feeling, improve their athletic performance and improve their academic performance. Massage is a

The History of Eiffel Tower
An icon of Paris, the Eiffel Tower symbolizes the French capital unlike any other architectural
monument. It has become impossible to imagine the city without the Eiffel Tower, and yet when it was
constructed for the Paris World s Fair in 1889, it was hugely controversial. The iron edifice was
originally intended to be a temporary construction, designed to symbolize French industrial prowess
as a showcase for the World s Fair. Once it served its purpose, Parisian residents hoped the
monumental mass would be torn down. Yet the advent of radio technology extended the life of Eiffel s
tower. As the tallest building in the world at the time, the structure was readily repurposed as a radio
tower.
Eiffel s design could not have been selected for its double role, as radio technology was not yet a
consideration in 1889. Out of the over a hundred other entries into the World s Fair competition, Eiffel
s won in part because of its grandeur and ostentatiousness. After all, the World s Fair was a showcase
to the Industrial Age: and a way for individual countries to prove their supremacy as technological
powers. The display of technological prowess served distinct cultural roles: such as the means by
which French national identity could become more cohesive. As the tallest building in the world for
nearly 40 years, the Eiffel Tower showed the world that Paris, France was a hub of progress. Another
reason why the design was selected was because the use of iron represented a revolutionary

Temple Grandin is a remarkable woman who has defied what most perceive when they see someone

They simply did not comprehend the enormous amount of detail her brain absorbed and her
connection to animals which allowed her to gain access to this knowledge. Temple did not let autism

Always following her gut for change even though several people seemed to not care to change and
preferred it to stay the way it was. This was not an easy task and more difficult when so many around
her did not believe in her. However, she focused more on those who did support her and tried to ignore
the negativity. Her bravery to march into a slaughterhouse to see how improvements could be made is
something I would assume to be impossible. It took courage for her to continue to go to the feedlot
even after workers put bull testicles on her truck. Though, who accepted her and could see her
amazing gift, they did not always understand how her mind worked but they accepted her for who she
was. Others soon realized what a unique ability she had. Such as, the reporter from the Arizona

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Plea Bargaining
Plea bargaining is when the prosecutor and defendant make an arrangement in which the defendant
pleads guilty to a lesser charge. In hopes with the Judge being lenient with their sentence. Many
criminal cases are based off of plea bargaining, it s a negotiation process where the defendant and the
prosecutor discuss what charges they will be accounted for if not all. Sometimes it may lead to a
reduced sentence, which also saves the time of everyone going through a trial and having to go
through the process of trying to solve a case. The judge can not be there through the discussion of the
plea bargain, and nor does a plea bargain take place in a court room. Plea bargaining is more of a
private situation with just the prosecutor and defendant. It also has it s advantages and disadvantages.
Most times plea bargaining becomes controversial, and It does get heated because no one wants to sit
in prison. A crime is a crime and the person who commits the crime has to face the consequences of
his/her actions. Plea Bargaining just makes things a little more less complicated then what it needs to
be for a defendant and the prosecutor.
As mentioned earlier, plea bargaining has it s advantages and disadvantages. The most obvious
advantage would be receiving a shorter sentence, and less chargers on ones record. A disadvantage
would be that either way you still have to do time in prison. Accepting a plea bargain is not easy at all,
everything will depend on things such as your criminal

Walt Disney s Free Enterprise System

we would not have different brands and/or companies. We would not be able to choose where to buy

everyone is allow to participate in the activities of their choice. Walt Disney started out working for a
company drawing cartoon duck, but things did not work out and he went onto bigger and better

enterprise system is that anyone could have done and still could do what Walt Disney did. Or what
could of happened is that Universal Studios did not like his idea of Oswald and turned him away.
Meaning that he would have to find someone else to produce it or it would be his main character. They
could also say the free enterprise system will state that Walt Disney was already in the business, he
was already famous so it was easy for him to create his own character and many other characters. With
the free enterprise system Walt Disney was allowed to create his characters and license them. It was
the consumers who made the characters, films, toys, etc. famous and popular. The free enterprise
system allows for business to create competition between themselves. Without the push from
Universal there might not have been Mickey Mouse or Disney (company). The consumers in the free
enterprise decide what stays and what goes, the consumers allow the producers to see what is working
and what is not. The producers decide what they are going to make, how much it is going to cost, and
what to do with the profits. The consumers of a free enterprise system decide; which goods/services to

The Gross Domestic Product ( Gdp )
The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) represents the monetary value of all the finished goods and
services produced within a country s geographic borders in a determined period of time. It is used as a
quantitative measure of the total economic activity of a nation, and it is usually calculated on an
annual basis. The GDP can be determined in three different ways: output or production measure,
income measure, and expenditure measure. In theory, it should all give the same number. The output
or production approach defines the GDP as the value of the goods and services produced by all sectors
of the economy. It is calculated by adding the value of the total sales of goods, minus the intermediate
consumption used to produce the final goods sold. The income approach of calculating GDP is defined
as the total income earned by the factors of production within an economy. First, you should
determine the National Income by adding all the wages, rents, interests, and profits earned within an
specific period of time. Then, it is added the value of Sales Taxes, Depreciation and Net Foreign
Factor Income, and the final result will be GDP. The expenditure approach identifies four possible
destinations for the total production of an economy. This output can be consumed by households,
businesses, the governmentor the foreign sector. That is why the GDP can be calculating by adding the
total amount of the purchases made within an economy in a period of time. From this approach we can

A question that plagues pet owners new and old is whether they should fix their animals which is the
process of removing the reproductive organs of an animal. Though in the end it is a tough decision to
make when considering both side to the problem. On the side that is for the spaying and neutering of
their animals, research suggests that it helps keep animals healthy is certain ways that not fixing an
animal does. It also contributes to the control of the animal population in not just in America. But, on
the other side of the issue there are studies showing that even though fixing an animal has many health

Keynesian Theory And The Difference Between Real And...
Economics is not only useful to those who use it to determine future outcomes for the world, but it is
also an important part of society s everyday life. We unknowingly understand concepts derived from
economics when we are trying to make choices of what to buy, what to invest in, when to be
conservative about spending, and much more. Understanding the Keynesian theory and the difference
between real and nominal variables may not directly affect each other, but both play a part in how we
relate economics to our world.
Keynesian theory is a concept developed by John Maynard Keynes, in which it is believed that
governments should intervene with the economy and how it is dealt. Keynesian economists believe
that saving beyond planned investments is a very serious problem that encourages recession. If saving
goes beyond investments, there will not be enough demand to purchase the goods and services that the
economy is producing. Therefore, leading into a recession, or worse a depression. Keynesian
economists believe that a government stimulus is more effective at boosting aggregate demand than a
tax cut because they believe that government intervention is a way to stabilize an economy.
When governments have programs to benefit people who are doing specific jobs, it will bring that
money back into the economy, unlike tax cuts. If the spending is supported by tax increases then this
will reduce people s incomes after tax, which will ultimately lead them to reduce their

Mark Of Cain
21. Mark of Cain After Cain killed his brother Abel out of jealousy, Cain began to fear for his life.
God decided to protect Cain, putting a mark on him. The mark was a sign that anyone who killed Cain
would suffer terribly. Therefore, it did not completely shield him from harm; it only signified a worse
ending for anyone who tried to kill him. This story is significant because it shows that God forgives;
Cain killed his own brother Abel, but God didn t punish him for it. He helped him out instead, taking
mercy on Cain. 22. Patience of Job A man named job was faced with a serious of terrible incidents; the

Daedalus and Icarus A king on the island of Crete had a fantastic inventor named Daedalus. Daedalus
built the Labyrinth for King Minos to keep the Minotaur out. But after he was finished, King Minos
decided to keep Daedalus prisoner because he had learned all of the king s secrets. The only other
prisoner was the Daedalus s son Icarus. Daedalus and Icarus both wanted to escape. Daedalus had the
idea that they could escape by creating bird wings for Icarus and himself so they could fly out of there.
Daedalus told Icarus to be careful; if he flew to close to the son the wax from the wings would melt,
and if he flew too close to the sea he d fall in. Icarus said he d be careful, but when they were flying,
Icarus got bored. He began doing many tricks and flying higher and higher, ignoring his father. He got
too close to the son and the wax melted; he fell from the sky and drowned. Daedalus sadly searched
for the body, and when he finally found it all he could do was burn it. This story is significant because
it shows the significance of following directions and listening to your elders; you may end up in big
trouble if you don t, like Icarus

Introduction
With technology moving at such a rapid pace, etiquette and ethics have a hard time keeping up. Five
years ago few people had even heard of electronic mail or e mail and even today, whether to add a
hyphen or not it is of trivial debate.
As a society, we hold dear the value of privacy and confidentiality as a basic fundamental right.
Access to the new technology of electronic mail can jeopardize both values.
What privacy rights should employees enjoy, and how can these be reconciled with the legitimate
need of organzations to control and manage their network?
People have come to depend on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
1The Colonists realized, before the revolutionary war, that there was a need to somehow police the
system to make sure that the mail is delivered to the person in which it was intended and that it did not
fall into the hands of someone else, namely the British.
To date, there are more than eighty federal crimes called postal offenses. In fact, there is a special
division of U.S. Postal investigators that have full powers of arrest . . . and we are the only country in
the world that has such regulating powers attached to our mail delivery system. Most Americans know
that tampering with mail not addressed to them is a federal offense. 2
So, if we have such protection for our written paper correspondence, would not the same kind of
protection apply to missives sent electronically?
For a working defintion of electronic mail (e mail), let us use: any technology enabling the non
interactive exchange of electronic messages between e mail users. 3 (see glossary for other terms)
Ben Franklin would be proud of the expediency of information transferred today, but unlike during his
time, the system of electronic mail does not yet have clearly defined laws or mores to guide our
society in the judicial use of this new technological mail system.
How did electronic mail begin?
Before the 1980 s, e mail was rarely even heard of. The Postal System developed a system called E

Making Positive Changes For Expectant Parents
Within this essay, I will reflect on an event that I witnessed during clinical placement, focussing on the
process of non directed donation (RCOG, 2006) of umbilical cord blood via the onsite NHS Blood and
Transport (NHSBT) team, as well as the related issue with the antenatal communication and
subsequent consent to utilise the service. In order to maintain confidentiality in accordance with the
Nursing and Midwifery Council s Code of Conduct (NMC, 2008) and The Data Protection Act (1998),
the hospital and the people involved in the event, (as well as those involved in subsequent
conversations as a result) will not be referred to by name. I have used the Gibbs reflective cycle
(Gibbs, 1988), and will be relating the event back to recent research and relevant hospital and
governmental procedures wherever possible. As a result of this assignment, I have undertaken further
research that will be outlined below, which I hope will assist in making positive changes for expectant
parents in the future.
Donation of umbilical cord blood is a trend that has grown in popularity in recent years, and is now
offered on site at several NHS trust hospitals (RCOG, 2006). Despite this service being readily
available to expectant parents within my placement hospital, it became clear during my second week
that the relevant information regarding donation was not being provided soon enough in the antenatal
period which would allow for an informed decision to be made as to whether or not

Persuasive Essay On Weight Class
key points
Unless you are weighing a pride for life, the fastest way to increase your competence in power lifting
is to get fat leaner if you lose.
After that, you should strive to get into the greatest weight class that you can achieve while
maintaining a good body structure.
When you go up to weight classes, it may be less competitive for you for one or two years while
acquiring muscle but in general a weight class will be more competitive in heavy in the long run.
Most people should not depend on water cut to make weight, but if you cut water, you should not cut 2

Maximum security prisons and particularly super maximum security prisons such as Pelican Bay State
Prison in California are designed to exert psychological control over violent inmates. The concept of
psychological control was pioneered by an 18th century philosopher name Jeremy Bentham. Jeremy
Bentham s method instilled self control over the incarcerated; however, it also caused numerous
inmates to fall into severe depression, rage, anxiety, hallucination, and even suicide (Clear et al.,
2013). Inmates who are placed in solitary confinement are considered as violent and dangerous;
however, in the mix of these convicted offenders are mentally ill prisoners who require crisis care or
psychiatric hospitalization (Metzner Fellner, 2010). Solitary confinement will affect any inmate
whether they are diagnosed with mental disorders or not. Bentham s philosophy of psychological
control has been criticized by critics of incarceration because it violates human life and dignity (Zara,
2013). A high profile serial killer such as Charles Manson may be sentenced in a super maximum
security facility, but he is still entitled to basic human rights and dignity afforded to him under the
Eighth Amendment. The United States ideology of maximum security prisons is completely different
from the Europeans. The objective of U.S maximum security prisons is custody and discipline;

The Impact That Directive Leaders, And Devil s Advocates
The purpose of this article was to evaluate the impact that directive leaders, participative leaders, and
devil s advocates can have on group decision making particularly the overall quality of the final
decision, the process of the group decision making, and five groupthink symptoms for decision
making groups. Experimenters directly manipulated the style of leadership being applied as well as

In keeping with this role play, the directive leader revealed his ideal solution to the rest of the group
within the first two minutes of the session, discouraged others from providing alternative solutions,
stressed the importance of being unanimous, and accentuated his prior experience in scenarios that
were similar to the Lost at Sea task. On the contrary, the participative leader s role was to encourage
group member participation and explore various different alternative solutions. The confederate group
members assigned to play the role of devil s advocate were to challenge any solutions that the group
leader or other group members presented, remind the group of the significance of the decision making
process for choosing the best possible solution, encourage group members to present differing
alternatives in response to one another s offered solutions, and promote the rationalization or
substantiation for all solutions presented. In contrast, when the assigned confederate member of the
group was not playing the role of devil s advocate, he did not challenge the solution presented by the
leader, did not advocate for any presented solutions, and behaved like any other group member.
To complete this study each group was asked to form a group decision based on the Lost at Sea
Survival task. This particular task was chosen due to its ability to produce a resolution that can be
quantitatively evaluated for group decision quality.

The Stock Market Crash Of 1929, By Brenda Lange
On October 29, 1929, America experienced the most calamitous stock market crash in its history.
Although some tried to prevent the crash from getting worse, the fear and panic that so many
Americans felt, caused them to make a horrible situation even worse. The 1929 stock market crash
affected America in several ways, causing America to go from a time of prosperity, to a time of strife,
leading Americans to lose billions of dollars and also leading to an increase in homelessness and
unemployment rates, leaving America devastated.
Before the market crash, many people were happy and optimistic about the future. Brenda Lange,
author of The Stock Market Crash of 1929, wrote that the time before the crash was a time of
optimism and hope, and the future looked promising. (Lange 12), referring to how people had nothing
to worry about. With a majority of people believing that nothing bad would happen, the small signs of
the future crash went unnoticed, leading to a mass panic when the market first went down, which was
a partial cause of the October 29th crash. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Report on the unique characteristic of qualitative and quantitative research strategy
Quantitative and qualitative researches are based on different paradigms. Qualitative research strategy
focuses mainly on words, human behaviour in the cultural context, attitudes and life experiences
rather than numerical data (IPA Research Strategy. 2010). It focuses on collecting information to
confirm how the variables interrelate. It is subjective and always relies on the interpretation of the
situation of the individual undertaking the study.
As for the quantitative it put emphasis on specific standard or numerical data and applies different
kind of statistical analysis. The researcher always stays independent, apart and uses random sampling
to prevent personal prejudices to misrepresent the results which can easily be generalized (IPA
Research Method, 2010).
Both strategies have their own characteristics.
Table 1 below illustrates different characteristic of the two strategies (H.J. Streubert D.R. Carpenter,

Divisions of household labour and child care, which have been argued to be markers of love and

an important study drawing on existing qualitative data from the National Survey of Families and
Households attained via interviews and surveys, to re examine the relationship between equality and
labour. Greenstein (1996) found that egalitarian women are less likely to do more housework than
their partners and are more likely to perceive the division of household labour as unjust. Supporting

Similarities Between Anthem And Fahrenheit 451
Can you fathom a world where everything is peaceful and predetermined? The novella Anthem by Ayn
Rand and the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury depict futures where everything is predetermined
and violence, betrayal, and deception are virtually non existent. In Anthem this dystopia puts humanity
into a dark age, which halts evolution and progression. This digression of humanity is the result of
Collectivist ideals as proposed throughout the novella, one instance is where Rand writes, There is
nothing to take a man s freedom away from him, save other men. To be free, a man must be free of his
brothers. That is freedom. That and nothing else. (Rand, 70) These collectivist ways caused children to

Black Orpheus Analysis
It is common practice to see old tales revamped for the modern day like romeo and juliet. Franco
Zeffirelli brought Romeo and Juliet to the big screen in 1968, while Baz Luhrmann s version added a
modern twist in 1997. This is no different for Marcel Camus s rendition of the classic Orpheus and
Eurydice story. His version adds quite a twist from the greek original taking place in Rio during
Carnival. The story follows the same like but the culture, and backdrop that envelopes the story is
completely different. It is a quite authentic example of Carnival and the use of the music style Bossa
Nova during the mid 20th century. The authenticity is even furthered when one learns that the two
man composer group who made the beautiful soundtrack are from Rio. Black Orpheus is an authentic
look into the festival of carnival and also the state of Brazil in the mid 1950s. Some of the underlying
feeling of Brazilians relating to its culture are not seen throughout the book, but are expressed by

As of today, America has undergone many issues involving health like diabetes, heart disease, and

This gives the students no choice but to eat a healthy school lunch; of course, the students would be
able to buy as much candy as they would like before and after school or during any extracurricular
activity.
Another proposed deterrent is the complete no sale of soda and candy anytime within school property,
otherwise known as a ban. School officials observe the banishment as a major solution to decrease the
rate of obesity among students in America. Even though Federal law prohibits the sale of foods
containing little nutritional value in competition with the school lunch program (Vail 1), many parents
repeatedly argue about the fact that this act of limitation eliminates their students freedom of choice.
Several high school students agree. As spokesman for the Center of Consumer Freedom, John Doyle
says, They can eliminate everything they want, and it will not do one thing to curb obesity (Egan 3).
On the other hand, various school districts have postponed acts of limitation on fattening foods and
beverages due to other reasons.
The number one reason is the fact that the schools would lose thousands of dollars a year in lost
contracts with food companies. According to an industry study, schools across the country get about

Joy Luck Club Character Analysis
No one is the same everyone is a different person and while people may have similarities they are still

Such as the daughters and mothers in the book, The Joy Luck Club. For starters, a young girl named

different views on everything even in speaking as she states, these kinds of explanations made me feel
my mother and I spoke two different languages, which we did. I talked to her in english, she answered

The Diary Of War, National Pride And The National...
Claire Anderson
History
8 October, 2013
The Preface to War; National Pride in the Balkans Walter S. Zapotoczny, an author and historian, once
said, Each of the great powers believed they had something to gain from war, fostering the national
pride and the national positioning that made World War I inevitable. This is true, as imperialism and
militarism were a large part of national pride. Austria Hungary, for example, wanted Serbia. The
German military was expanding rapidly. With each argument countries got into, hatred became
stronger. Eventually, the European tensions snapped and everything toppled into terrible war. World
War I was inevitable due to each of the great powers being imperialistic, militaristic, and prepared for
war.
During the early 1900 s, the European great powers believed they all had something to gain from
expanding. Land in Africa was being claimed by countries such as France and Great Britain. A main
goal for all the countries of Europe was growing. Austria and Hungary joined together into a dual
monarchy in 1867. This country annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1908. Germany was annoyed at
not having as much space in Africa, which is imperialistic because it is territorial. Imperialism was
popular during the time. The great powers believed they could become better through imperialism. In
this case, imperialism is showing national pride because the expansion of a country makes it more
powerful. Power is something citizens of a country can be

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Thermoset Epoxy Resins
Polymer composites are assuring in Mechanical and Tribological application due to the possibility of
tailoring their properties. These polymer composites have observed in application such as automotive,
aerospace and sports equipment industries. When we compared to most metals and unreinforced
plastics, this offer a high strength, corrosion resistant, durable and can be fabricated into complex
shapes. Major advantages of composite materials are that they can be tailored to meet the specific
needs of the structure, determined by reinforcement and matrix in proper way and also these
composites have been used in vehicle industries about more than 50%, this is the main reason made to
meet the Euro standards and research work as been conducting ... Show more content on

Thermoset epoxy resins are extensively studied as a matrix material for composite structure as well as
aerospace application because they exhibit low shrinkage and higher mechanical properties.
There is a need for developing high wear resistance and materials that would sustain to meet the
conditions of mechanical systems with long life. Achieving and maintain high wear resistances have
been very difficult in past and still challenging problems in field of tribology.
1.2 Characteristics of the Composites
A composite material as a structural material created synthetically or artificially by combining two or
more materials. Two materials makes together to give the composite unequal properties, one material
is known as reinforcing phase, and these are in the form of fibers, sheets or particles, and is fixed or
attach to the other material called matrix phase.
The objective of composite materials is to take advantage of the superior properties of both materials.
Industry has identified the ability of composite material to produce high strength, high corrosive
environment, and high durable as well as cost effective products.

Act 1 Rita Essay
The transformed character of Rita in Act 2 Scene 1 is unrecognisable from the comedic character
presented to us in Act 1 Scene 1 . To what extent do you agree with this statement. Refer closely to
Russell s use of Comedic anf Dramatic Devices. (You must reference to all AOs).
Although Rita acknowledges that being smart is important, she shows that her change in the play is
not just learning, but through her personality too. Her education helps her overcome her working class
background and for her not to follow the rold of a traditonal woman in the 1970 s. Education
completely changes Rita and effects her life enormously.
One of the greatest changes we see in Rita is the language she uses as the play progresses. In Act 1
Scene 1, the language ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Education was not important because women were expected to leave school and become a typical
housewife. This is presented at the end of the first Act when Frank suggests that Rita finds another
tutor and she replies with ...an you re gonna bleedin well teach me . This is very comedic as the words
she uses contrasts greatly with the acendemic and privilidged surroundings she is currently within. In
this Act, her language also contrasts with Frank s. Frank is presented as a well educated, middle class
university professor who s language is much more refined. An example of this is when Rita tells Frank
she s Off his cake , even Frank, a very experienced university tutor does not understand this figure of
speech. This adds humour to the scene as it reveals to the audience just how much educating Rita is
going to need. Rita s language also consists of lots of swearing due to her feeling nervous and because
she lacks confidence which allows the audience to empathise with her as she hasn t recieved the
education in which Frank once had. Her taboo language is consistant through the first scene, such as
when she sees the painting in Franks room and says Look at those tits , the first time she meets her
professor. This

Video Games Have On Culture
The Far Reaching Influence Video Games Have on Culture
All you can see on screen is a pair of arms holding a gun as you proceed down a poorly lit, grungy
tunnel. Looking down, you can t see your own feet not because of the gloom, they simply weren t
included in the design. A heads up display shows ammo, health, shields, and a motion tracker in the
corner while an aiming reticule sits in the center of the screen. The graphics are shoddy at best by
today s standards, but at the time it was released this was considered to be the cutting edge of video
games. This is Halo: Combat Evolved, released in 2001, not even two decades ago. Now known as the
first in the Halo series, at the time it was an example of how far video games had come; today it ...

In books, everything is laid before you, he says. There is nothing left for you to discover. Video games
are the only forms of artistic expression that allow the authoritative voice of the author to remain true
while allowing the observer to explore and experiment. This is especially true when looking at older
creations, when the graphics and narratives were limited by the current technology, forcing players to
draw heavily from their imaginations, becoming what Melissinos calls the game s third voice, the first
voice being the designer of the game, and the second voice being the mechanics of the game itself
(Tucker).
One of the most memorable parts of any game is its main theme, the song that plays during the title
screen . Originally simple 8 bit tunes meant to draw attention at arcades, a video game s soundtrack
was handled by the programmers, limited to whatever space was left over after the game itself was
complete (Hsu). As a result, early games such as Tetris had a single short, repetitive song that would
loop constantly in the background, eventually becoming embedded in the player s brain. As
technology developed to allow for more efficient data storage, companies were able to add longer and
more complex songs. Eventually, as games became more immersive, the soundtrack became a way to
emphasize what was occurring on screen (Hsu). With video games becoming an increasingly

Sigmund Freud Ideology
Sigmund Freud explored many new concepts in the human mind during his lifetime. He was the
scholar who discovered an immense new realm of the mind, the unconscious. He was the philosopher
who identified childhood experience, not racial destiny or family fate, as the vessel of character, and
he is the therapist who invented a specific form of treatment for mentally ill people, psychoanalysis.
This advanced the revolutionary notion that actual diagnosable diseases can be cured by a technology
that dates to the dawn of humanity: speaking. Sigmund Freud, writing more than 320 books, articles
and essays on psychotherapy in his lifetime, forever changed how society viewed mental illness and
the meaning of their dreams. However, controversy over ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The emotions appropriate to the trauma are not expressed in any direct fashion, but do not simply
evaporate: They express themselves in behavior that in a weak, vague way offers a response to the
trauma. These symptoms are, in other words, meaningful. When the client can be made aware of the
meanings of his or her symptoms (through hypnosis, for example) then the unexpressed emotions are
released and so no longer need to express themselves as symptoms. With Charcot, many of Charcot s
patients suffered from a bizarre array of physical and emotional problems, symptoms of a puzzling
affliction doctors called hysteria. Freud became deeply interested in the plight of patients, typically
women, who suffered from hysteria. Through the study of hysteria, Charcot would introduce young
Freud to the mysteries he would spend the rest of his life trying to fathom the power of mental forces
hidden away from conscious awareness. Furthermore, Freud s father died four years prior to the
publication. Painful and disturbing, the long run effect of freeing Freud from his inhibitions impeded
his work (Parsons). The death of Freud s father most likely had a significant effect on his mind for the
topics stated in The Interpretation of Dreams included a great sense of loss of a parental figure,
relating to Freud s ideas of infantile sexuality To Freud, this

Racial Conflicts
What is race and ethnicity? Can racial conflicts be eliminated by education? Can there be a time where
one s colour or background did not matter? Every modern day society faces racial conflicts. Humans
are equal, whether they are white or black, etc. Hatred among different racial groups is common in out
modern day society. Ignorance of the equality of every human causes racism. Humans need laws to
follow and the lack of these laws cause conflict between humans. Erin Gruwell was optimistic about
teaching a class of so many different backgrounds but it was much more challenging to get through to
such angry teenagers. Racial conflicts in America include gang violence, and even murder. The
Freedom Writers movie gives a clear description of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rescuing a society from racial conflicts will cause a lot of people their jobs and even their lives but at
the end it will be worth it for later generations. The situation in the film where Eva Benitez has to be a
witness against an innocent teenager to save one of her own is an example of rescuing a society. She
knew that her boyfriend killed the Asian guy but was influenced by her parents and friends to testify
against a black guy who was also a suspect. With time, Eva realized that a criminal must be found
even if it was someone she loves and that made her tell the truth to the judge about who killed the
Asian guy.
Another example of the ignorance of the equality of humans is when Tito drew a picture of a black
man with big fat lips and passed it through the students until it got to Jamal Hill which was affected by
the photo. The cause of these immature actions is feeling the need to disrespect others because one is
not being respected themselves. Tito was proud and he reached his goal by bringing down Jamal s self
esteem. When the teacher saw that drawing of a black man with big lips, she made a reference to The
Second World War. She also made a reference to a gang during The Second World War who started
out poor, angry, and looked down upon. This gang was given importance when Adolf Hitler came into
power in Germany and that is when The Holocaust began. The Nazi s had a certain outlook on the
superior race and hated Jewish people. They

Visual War Propaganda Analysis
Emotion through Visual War Propaganda Even though the artist always strives to convey a certain
emotion through his art, the beholder does not always feel what the artist intended them to feel. Most
of the time, visual art is seen as either truly in depth or quite ridiculous, it all depends on the viewer
when deciding what side of the spectrum they reside in. This argument is more prominent in today s
culture than it ever was before, with the emergence of modern art, people are beginning to feel that
they would be able to create most of the art being sold for high biddings without a problem. This may
be true, but it takes more than just slicing a few lines into a canvas like Lucio Fontana s Spatial
Concepts collection, it takes an open mind ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, the Jap Trap poster, the Japanese mouse is drawn with big teeth, thin slits for eyes, big
glasses, and a wrinkled nose. This was the typical look for the Japanese when they were drawn on
posters, the Americans during WWII despised the Japanese increasingly as the war went on, because
they associated the stereotypical look with the doings of the Japanese (United States Information
Service). Also in, The Jews A People of Contagion, the subject is drawn with a large nose, big ears,
bushy eyebrows, a long beard, and a bag of money (Unknown). Someone might argue that the
stereotypes were used, but it did not impact the citizens at all. As time went on, the constant look of
the Japanese was associated with their bad deeds, which made the viewer feel obligated to fight

Assess critically the contribution that scientific...
Assess critically the contribution that scientific management makes to the experience and management
of contemporary work.
Scientific Management also known as Taylorism was developed by Frederick W. Taylor in the late
nineteenth century.
Taylorism is a form of job design, which stresses short, repetitive work cycles; detailed, set task
sequences; a separation of task conception from task execution; and motivation linked to pay.
Taylor argued that the principal objective of management should be to secure the maximum prosperity
for the employer, coupled with the maximum prosperity for each employee (1911).
Fredrick Taylor s five principles of scientific management:
1. A clear division of tasks and responsibilities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pay system may result in a worker valuing quantity over quality.
7. Functional foremanship was deemed to be too complex and an unwieldy mode of supervision.
(Huczynski, 2013)
Ways to alleviate the negative effects of Taylorism especially to worker motivation and performance
and find new ways to job designs came about following the introduction of the American
psychologists Fredrick Hertzberg two factor theory of motivation. Hertzberg had the idea that there
were two sets of factors that affected motivation and job characteristics:
Motivators: These factors refer to the extent to which a job offers opportunities for achievement,
creativity, responsibility, opportunities for personal growth. These are intrinsic to the job itself.
Hygiene factors: These comprise issue as the nature of supervision and supervisory style, the level of
pay, working conditions, and interpersonal relations. These are extrinsic to the job.
For Hertzberg it was only the motivator factors that have the potential to generate satisfaction and
motivation. If hygiene factors are improved, they do not result in improved motivation, but if
removed, will result in demotivation.
To raise levels of motivation and therefore performance, following Hertzberg theory of motivation,
companies needed to ensure that the hygiene factors were in place, and to also ensure that the

Fallout 3 Essay
Mothership Zeta is the final bit of DLC for Fallout and after the previous four attempts I was hoping
that Bethesda had learned enough to let this one end with a bang. The premise is certainly promising
enough. Your character follows a strange signal that leads to a crashed alien ship but before you can
loot anything you are abducted and stripped of all belongings. Aliens are hardly newcomers to the
Fallout universe but an entire DLC set aboard an alien space ship came as a surprise. I guess space
really was the final frontier for Fallout 3 after all the adventures on, around and below the capitol
wasteland. Visually the game is still recognizable as Fallout 3 but only just. The art style is quite
different than the main game and previous DLC but is let down by the linear layout of the levels. The
alien computers and corridors are suitably sci fi looking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fallout 3 was never a great shooter and stripped of the interesting quests and moral choices you are
left with a linear slog through some uninspiring locations. You encounter some suitably futuristic alien
weaponry and gadgets which are useful since your captives are bullet sponges. Weapons such as the
alien atomizer and disintegrator are nice additions to your arsenal and you can even take over the alien
ship as a home base for your character once you complete the DLC. The lack of side quests means that
most of your time in Mothership Zeta is spent vaporizing aliens and munching on disgusting alien
food for health. The highlight is discovering some fellow captives who have been plucked from
different time periods which provide a nice B movie feel. Sadly these characters are never really
fleshed out and mostly tag along while you do the shooting. You can hunt around for some truly funny
tapes that contain conversations between alien captives and their rather unfriendly

The Enhancement Of Primary Care Practices
Primary care is considered by many countries as a backbone of the medical health system that is
effective and efficient and satisfies the demands of patients and families (Sebo, 2015). The
enhancement of primary care practices quality improvement (QI) orientation is essential in
strengthening the primary care practices (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Agency for
Healthcare Research and Quality, 2013). In addition, external supports such as feedback and
benchmarking, coaching, expert consultation, and shared learning can help primary care practices with
quality improvement and enhancing QI orientation. There are different organizations that provide
quality supports to primary care practices. One of this is the North Carolina Area Health Education
Centers (AHECs) Practice Support Program. The aim of the program is to support primary care
practices in North Carolina by providing primary care practices with onsite QI consultants, tools, and
resources that help primary care practices transformational efforts (U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2014).The aim of this paper is to
summarize two articles related to primary care.
I. Quality Improvement in Primary Care: External Supports for Practices

Soechtig and Couric present the argument that the roles of our government along with the interests and processing methods of food industries are ultimately responsible for the increasing rates of childhood obesity in the United States. • 4. The Effects Of Television On Our Health Jacoby stated in his article Silent that Idiot box that letting your children watch too much television can ruin them in the long run. Television has the ability to lead children to violence and destroy their innocence. Television can be pleasing to the eye. According to Jacoby children don t become educated from watching TV. The more TV they watch, the less educated they usually end up. I agree with him because when I use to watch television I would feel extremely sluggish and not want to do anything else. Watching television can have some effects towards your overall health. It also can lead to bad habits and prevents you from having a better outlook on life around you. Watching too much television can have a serious effect on one s motivation and abilities to interact with the outside world. For example, Scarface is about Gang related activities and Drug abuse and is very aggressive. It can be so engrossing. It can make a child wonder what his life would be like if he was in the main character s shoes. If parents watch a violent show or movie with their young children around, the children will have problems. They will develop learning difficulties and have trouble paying attention in class. Not communicating with your friends and family is also a health problem, a person could get depressed, have social anxiety, or become delusional. People can even become sleep deprived. What normally happens when you watch television? You usually stay there dazed for many of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Essay on Impact of the Eiffel Tower on Society Built in 1889 to commemorate the hundred year anniversary of the French Revolution, the Eiffel Tower has been a topic of discussion for numerous years. Designed by Gustave Eiffel and Morris Koechlin, the Tower was built originally as a temporary structure. The pieces of this eye catching building were to be disassembled and melted down after twenty years. This did not happen, however. The Eiffel Tower has become a colossal icon throughout the world; the Tower has brought in enormous revenue and has a scientific impact on French and all of Europe s society. The Eiffel Tower has become associated with Paris; a symbol. It is an icon for France, travel and romance, among others. What made this Tower vastly popular is the cause of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What else makes this Tower iconic is who it was designed by. Morris Koechlin, co designer of the Eiffel Tower, also designed the Statues of Liberty in 1887. The Tower being built by an already famous architect gives it more initial appeal to the general public. He knew what to use for the specific requirements of the particular structure. For the Statue of Liberty, he used copper. But climate, location and use required a different material for the Eiffel Tower in Paris. As a result, Koechlin and Eiffel used iron for the Eiffel Tower. Using the correct material allowed the edifice to stand tall for several years. A symbol is everlasting. For the Tower to be infinite, it must be made from a strong material that can endure any condition. In the storm in 1999, the building swayed thirteen centimeters but remained secure. In heat, the Iron Lady can move up to eighteen centimeters. This proves in its ability to withstand a vast variety of conditions. This ensures that it is eternal which is necessary to mold it into an icon of a prosperous and exquisite city that is Paris. The original Eiffel Tower is so famous and iconic that it has inspired others to create replicas. One famous example is the one in Las Vegas, Nevada. Standing only half the size of the primary ... • 6. Comparing Christmas And Hanukkah Despite being the product of separate, largely dissimilar religions, Christmas and Hanukkah fulfill a similar goal. Although the specific food traditions throughout Christianity and Judaism differ greatly, the role of food in these holidays is largely the same. Food is imbued with a sense of remembrance and reverence, creating a level of similarity between two very distinct traditions. Hanukkah, or the Festival of Lights, is a central holiday in modern Judaism. Although it is not a Biblical holiday, it marks a significant cultural event in Jewish history, commemorating the Maccabean revolt and subsequent rededication of the temple by Judah Maccabee. Central to the holiday is the miracle of oil, whereby a single container of holy oil, one day s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Turkey is common, although other large birds are often substituted. In predominantly Catholic parts of Europe, the traditional Christmas dinner is The Vigil, a feast comprised of seven varieties of fish either baked or fried in oil. This stems from the Catholic tradition of avoiding meat on some holidays, and incorporates a lesson on Catholic numerology into the meal. While there has been some effort to incorporate Christian lessons and stories into Christmas foods, such as candy canes, the spiritual aspect of Christmas food is still fairly nebulous in its presentation. Because it draws from such diverse cultural backgrounds, as opposed to the less varied cultural heritage of Judaism, food is not as highly valued as a teaching tool. That is not to say there is no religious motivation behind Christmas food, or that there are no parallels to traditional Hanukkah foods, but these parallels and motivations are superficial at best. Instead, one must look at the overarching themes behind Christmas and Hanukkah food traditions in order to find a connection. While there are few similarities between the Christian and Jewish traditions, they both mark a significant event in their religion, and they both commemorate it with food. Food as a tool of reverence, then, is a common thread between ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Essay on Fuel Economy in American Automobiles Fuel efficiency in automobiles has become a topic of much discussion in recent years in the United States. This is due largely to the environmental devastation that fuel emissions cause, but it is also sparked by the rising fuel costs. Making cars with high fuel efficiency not only saves consumers money, but also will drastically reduce the pollution that is caused by emissions. Today automakers are putting a tremendous amount of effort into making their cars more fuel efficient, both to meet government regulations and to make their car more appealing to the consumer. During the late 1900 s, fuel efficiency was given very little thought by automakers. Instead, they competed with each other by coming out with larger and more powerful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first law that was passed to enforce this was the Energy Policy and Conservation Act, which was passed by Congress in 1975. This law established a Corporate Average Fuel Economy program, commonly known as the CAFE program, and it required automakers to drastically increase the fuel efficiency of their vehicles. Consequently, by 1985, the average fuel efficiency of automobiles had risen to 27.5 miles per gallon, which is very close to what it is today (Bezdek 132,133). Because CAFE did not change the fuel efficiency standard until years later, by the early 1980 s most automakers had met the fuel efficiency that was required for their automobiles, so they started to pay more attention to the size and power of their vehicles. Instead of building cars with better gas mileage each year, they built their cars bigger and with more power, while keeping the fuel efficiency just high enough so that it met CAFE standards. Accordingly, the gas mileage of vehicles has not increased significantly since the 1980 s (Bezdek 133). In fact, the average fuel efficiency of new passenger vehicles steadily declined from the 1980 s until 2004. This was due to the loopholes which car manufacturers found in the CAFE standards. CAFE treated light trucks much more leniently than cars, and allowed them to have considerably less fuel efficiency than cars. This caught the attention of car manufacturers, who then looked at how CAFE defined a light truck. They ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Protein Chromatography Protein properties are directly affected by their environment, which depends on pH, temperature, solvent effects, and pressure. With these affects has come more desire for better techniques in the purification and separation processes. These processes hopefully will prevent loss of biological activity and denaturation. With ion exchange chromatography comes many advantages over column chromatography such as union between the target protein and functional groups at a very quick rate, exponential growth without difficulty, short processing times, no heating, no extreme pH range, and a multitude of other things (Santos et al. 2012). The first included Cibacron Blue Sepharose CL 6B, proteins, and egg white lysozyme. They tested the proteins and egg whites binding ability to the Cibacron Blue. To make matters easier, they only searched for absorption of pure proteins from 0.05 M Tris HCl buffer, pH 7.2. This was achieved by eluting the absorbed proteins with 1M KCl In in 0.05 M Tris HCl buffer. The second type included immobilized monoclonal antibodies and the absorption of E. Coli B galactosidase against B galactosidase. This was chosen due to the simplicity of measuring the activity of B galactosidase that could then tell us the concentration of the antigen. The only downside to this approach was B galactosidase has a much higher molecular weight that most antigens commonly used by this method. This means the large molecule will have trouble penetrating the pores in the immuno absorbents. This was done by immobilizing the antibodies on a silica based adsorbent, which was then added to PBS buffer. The buffer contained antibodies. The flask they were in was then shaken for four hours, followed by removal of all the unreacted protein that was done by using a funnel with sodium chloride solution. To wash the gel they used propionic acid and then stored the adsorbent in PBS buffer. Finally to elute the absorbed B galactosidase, they used 6 M urea in 20 mM Tris HCl, 10 mM ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, and 10 mM sodium Chloride, 0.1 M 2 mercaptoethanol, pH 7.2 (Chase ... • 9. Tradition In Shirley Jackson s The Lottery Who would not want to win a lottery? When you read the title of the short story The Lottery , you would think that it is about winning a large amount of money. Shirley Jackson s short story The Lottery was published in 1948 and the short story has a very different way of playing lottery. In this short story, tradition plays a big role and you can ask yourself the question: Would you follow a tradition blindly or would you stand against the authority? The short story starts with an introduction of the setting. The reader gets details of the scene and an introduction of the characters. It is June 27 and it is the day of the lottery. In the beginning of the short story, we see the children playing with stones and as a reader, it can first be read as something childish until we finish the short story and get to know the real purpose of the stones. The story is told by a third person objective narrator and this point of view influences the story because we do not get to read the characters thoughts or feelings and the narrator simply describes the process of the lottery. The horror genre is also shown in the narrator s writing style. The story s narration show no empathy and the villagers see the lottery as something very natural and it is also said in the beginning of the short story that they like to finish the lottery in time for lunch. No emotion is shown and they are just following the tradition . They just want to finish the business as it was nothing meaningful. The tone in the short story does not change. • 10. Argumentative Essay On Massage Therapy What does back pain, neck tension, headaches and anxiety all have in common? They are all treatable issues that can be relieved or treated through massage therapy. Stress related symptoms are one potential treatment option for massage therapy. Massage may also be used to treat muscular pain following strenuous exercise. Tiffany Field, head of Psychology at the University of Miami School of Medicine s Touch Research Institute, explains that massage can limit our bodies fight or flight response associated with stressful or fearful situations. In university, many students will experience stressful moments with assignments, exams, and projects. What many students are unaware of, is how stress negatively impacts mental and physical health. Through the use of massage therapy, students can relieve stress and even sleep better at night. Massage can be used to cope with mood disorders and relieve muscle pain or tension. Field explains massage can increase blood flow and circulation of oxygen or nutrients throughout the muscles, as a method of removing metabolic wastes such as lactic acid that are produced through exercise (58). Massage is an excellent treatment for stress, pain, and sleep deprivation. With a massage therapy clinic on campus, charging at reduced rates, students would benefit by having the opportunity to improve their quality of sleep, limit emotional issues they may be feeling, improve their athletic performance and improve their academic performance. • 11. The History of Eiffel Tower An icon of Paris, the Eiffel Tower symbolizes the French capital unlike any other architectural monument. It has become impossible to imagine the city without the Eiffel Tower, and yet when it was constructed for the Paris World s Fair in 1889, it was hugely controversial. The iron edifice was originally intended to be a temporary construction, designed to symbolize French industrial prowess as a showcase for the World s Fair. Once it served its purpose, Parisian residents hoped the monumental mass would be torn down. Yet the advent of radio technology extended the life of Eiffel s tower. As the tallest building in the world at the time, the structure was readily repurposed as a radio tower. Eiffel s design could not have been selected for its double role, as radio technology was not yet a consideration in 1889. Out of the over a hundred other entries into the World s Fair competition, Eiffel s won in part because of its grandeur and ostentatiousness. After all, the World s Fair was a showcase to the Industrial Age: and a way for individual countries to prove their supremacy as technological powers. The display of technological prowess served distinct cultural roles: such as the means by which French national identity could become more cohesive. As the tallest building in the world for nearly 40 years, the Eiffel Tower showed the world that Paris, France was a hub of progress. Another reason why the design was selected was because the use of iron represented a revolutionary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In hopes with the Judge being lenient with their sentence. Many criminal cases are based off of plea bargaining, it s a negotiation process where the defendant and the prosecutor discuss what charges they will be accounted for if not all. Sometimes it may lead to a reduced sentence, which also saves the time of everyone going through a trial and having to go through the process of trying to solve a case. The judge can not be there through the discussion of the plea bargain, and nor does a plea bargain take place in a court room. Plea bargaining is more of a private situation with just the prosecutor and defendant. It also has it s advantages and disadvantages. Most times plea bargaining becomes controversial, and It does get heated because no one wants to sit in prison. A crime is a crime and the person who commits the crime has to face the consequences of his/her actions. Plea Bargaining just makes things a little more less complicated then what it needs to be for a defendant and the prosecutor. As mentioned earlier, plea bargaining has it s advantages and disadvantages. The most obvious advantage would be receiving a shorter sentence, and less chargers on ones record. A disadvantage would be that either way you still have to do time in prison. Accepting a plea bargain is not easy at all, everything will depend on things such as your criminal ... • 15. The Gross Domestic Product ( Gdp ) The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) represents the monetary value of all the finished goods and services produced within a country s geographic borders in a determined period of time. It is used as a quantitative measure of the total economic activity of a nation, and it is usually calculated on an annual basis. The GDP can be determined in three different ways: output or production measure, income measure, and expenditure measure. In theory, it should all give the same number. The output or production approach defines the GDP as the value of the goods and services produced by all sectors of the economy. It is calculated by adding the value of the total sales of goods, minus the intermediate consumption used to produce the final goods sold. The income approach of calculating GDP is defined as the total income earned by the factors of production within an economy. First, you should determine the National Income by adding all the wages, rents, interests, and profits earned within an specific period of time. Then, it is added the value of Sales Taxes, Depreciation and Net Foreign Factor Income, and the final result will be GDP. The expenditure approach identifies four possible destinations for the total production of an economy. This output can be consumed by households, businesses, the governmentor the foreign sector. That is why the GDP can be calculating by adding the total amount of the purchases made within an economy in a period of time. From this approach we can identify ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Keynesian Theory And The Difference Between Real And... Economics is not only useful to those who use it to determine future outcomes for the world, but it is also an important part of society s everyday life. We unknowingly understand concepts derived from economics when we are trying to make choices of what to buy, what to invest in, when to be conservative about spending, and much more. Understanding the Keynesian theory and the difference between real and nominal variables may not directly affect each other, but both play a part in how we relate economics to our world. Keynesian theory is a concept developed by John Maynard Keynes, in which it is believed that governments should intervene with the economy and how it is dealt. Keynesian economists believe that saving beyond planned investments is a very serious problem that encourages recession. If saving goes beyond investments, there will not be enough demand to purchase the goods and services that the economy is producing. Therefore, leading into a recession, or worse a depression. Keynesian economists believe that a government stimulus is more effective at boosting aggregate demand than a tax cut because they believe that government intervention is a way to stabilize an economy. When governments have programs to benefit people who are doing specific jobs, it will bring that money back into the economy, unlike tax cuts. If the spending is supported by tax increases then this will reduce people s incomes after tax, which will ultimately lead them to reduce their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The concept of psychological control was pioneered by an 18th century philosopher name Jeremy Bentham. Franco Zeffirelli brought Romeo and Juliet to the big screen in 1968, while Baz Luhrmann s version added a modern twist in 1997. This is no different for Marcel Camus s rendition of the classic Orpheus and Eurydice story. His version adds quite a twist from the greek original taking place in Rio during Carnival. The story follows the same like but the culture, and backdrop that envelopes the story is completely different. It is a quite authentic example of Carnival and the use of the music style Bossa Nova during the mid 20th century.
