time in France, Sedaris experienced intimidation, abuse, and joy. Learning a foreign language as an

define a culture or eventually die out, all directly due to the amount of support each receives. An
example of a social construction would be currency and race. Currency for example takes on different
forms in physical appearance, from gold to paper, and different names between different countries,
from the Japanese yen to the Mexican peso, yet each can be exchanged for one another in comparable

The language we speak defines our true identity and who we are. Living in a country where the main
language is English, the Spanish I grew up speaking seem to be conquered by the English language.
Many of us who are bilingual come from a place in where English is not our main and faced many
obstacles to learning the language, but it seems that when we learn the language we tend to speak
English more than our native tongue. Authors like Gloria Anzaldua and Amy Tan had connected to us
the readers in such personal ways where we start to see connections. Gloria Anzaldua explains in her
essay How to Tame a Wild Tongue , how her tongue was not free until she was able to switch from
Spanish to English whenever she wanted to speak with someone or write in both languages.
Additionally, she explores the meaning of Anglicism in her piece which its significant to me because I
come from a background where most, if not all of my family and friends who grew up in the
Dominican Republic and the United States tend to use these words. Amy Tan s essay Mother Tongue ,
connects to many of us whose English is their second language, especially if one s coming from a
different country than the USA. As well as to how we need to be there to assist our parents whenever
they need our help with the English language. These authors show us how the language we speak

Critical Issue 16 is, will school improvement efforts alone narrow the racial/ethnic achievement gap.
Katie Haycock believes in adequate funding and that high standards will improve academic
