Accounting Is The Language Of Business
Introduction
Accounting is the language of business. It is a profession that is being guided by principles, concepts,
conventions, laws, etc. All these fundamental building blocks serve as common and general
compasses to all practitioners of the profession. In some cases, they are nation wide tailored, while in
other cases, they are universally tailored. Accounting as a living, practical, dynamic and realistic
profession covers so many areas of social, economic (business), and governmental activities. Surely,
any endeavour that involves monetary and material activities create a room for the services of
Accounting. Many of the human endeavours for which the accounting profession plays significant
(some times inevitable) roles include; Banking, Insurance, Manufacturing, Farming Contracting, Oil
and Gas, Mining, Transportation (Air, Land and Sea), Educational Institutions, Churches, Ministries,
ICT, Hire Purchase, Local Government Authorities, Estate Businesses, Export and Import Businesses,
Bill of Exchange Transactions, Royalties Transactions, Consignment Transactions, Stock Market
Transactions, Sports, Entertainment, Hospitals and Hospitality Industry, etc.
Amongst these activities where the role of the Accounting Profession has been recognized, the very
one that enjoys the focus of this presentation is Hire Purchase. There are various definitions of Hire
Purchase, but one main meaning. These definitions include:
A contract of hire purchase is one under which an owner of

Bridge Foundation Design Essay
ASEISMIC FOUNDATION DESIGN PROCESS
LESSONS LEARNED FROM TWO MAJOR PROJECTS :
THE VASCO DA GAMAAND THE RION ANTIRION BRIDGES
Alain PECKER
Géodynamique et Structure, 157 Rue des Blains 92220 BAGNEUX, France
1 INTRODUCTION
The choice of a design concept for a bridge foundation is guided by various factors; several of these
factors are indeed of technical origin, like the environmental conditions in a broad sense, but others
non technical factors may also have a profound impact on the final design concept. These aspects will
be reviewed and illustrated by comparison of the solutions adopted for two major European cable
stayed bridges: the Vasco da Gama bridge in Lisbon (Portugal) and the Rion Antirion bridge, near
Patras
(Greece). The foundations solutions for those two structures are described and an attempt is made to
pinpoint the major factors that have guided the final choices. The innovative foundation concept
finally adopted for the Rion Antirion bridge is further described in details to highlight how capacity
design principles, which are familiar to structural engineers, can be implemented in earthquake
resistant design of foundations.
2 ASEISMIC FOUNDATION DESIGN PROCESS
The aseismic design process for foundations is a very broad activity requiring the synthesis of insight,
creativity, technical knowledge and experience [1]. Information is required and decisions have to be
made at various stages including:

Analysis Of Howard Zinn s Indians History Of The Us...
History 2112
Critical Analysis Paper #1
Dr. Pitts
James Hamby
Monday Wednesday 8:30pm
Patriot s vs. People s Howard Zinn s, Peoples History of the US and Larry Schweikart s, Patriots
History of the US are two analytical views on history that most people would consider politically
conflicting. Zinn s Marxist book was widely praised by liberal activist and Schweikart s book is
greatly publicized by conservatives like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. These two widely known
historians turned their focus on writing two historical pieces that would fill in the historical holes that
weren t being taught in the educational systems. It created a type of diverse learning that made for a
great argument while still allowing the readers to understand all sides of the topics at hand. Zinn really
dismissed the common white mans history and focused his approach on a multiple minority
perspective. Schweikart s book is very different in the sense he takes aim at Zinn as he targets words
like great discovery and war on terror which Zinn only used as scare quotes. Schweikart s book really
reads like old history textbooks from the moral principals of the American founders that built this
nation to the ideological view of American prosperity. No matter who shares the views of the political
perspectives or condemns them because of its bias stances both historians felt responsible in writing
the history of the United States.
Zinn did not believe in an unbiased approach to history

401k Retirement Plan
Despite the $5.5 trillion invested in retirement and savings plans, many Americans are primed for a
lower standard of living during their golden years. Since Social Security and defined benefit plans are
becoming a thing of the past, Americans are relying heavily on their own investments later in life.
Defined benefit plans have given way for the rise of 401k and IRA plans which are defined by
contributions of the individual. Employee sponsored programs in 401ks have been flocked to for their
flexibility, tax efficiency and high contribution limits when compared to other retirement accounts.
The Retirement Crisis Many employees take retirement benefits for granted, but the sad truth remains
that almost half the working population is employed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Now that 401k and IRA plans are the sole form of retirement planning, it has become a problem for
Americans to save anything. Employee sponsored 401k plans have become the status quo in

investment platforms aims to tackling this problem making them easily accessible for businesses of all
sizes. While its effect wont be felt for another few years it s a great first step to addressing the growing

Essay about Redemption and Damnation in Measure for...
Redemption and Damnation in Measure for Measure and Othello
Measure for Measure and Othello are closely related. There is a thesis antithesis bond between these
two plays. Much more than just sharing a trait or a source, the two constitute a paired study of the
processes of redemption and damnation.
Measure for Measure counterbalances Othello. Looking at the text of each play, one finds parallel and
contrasting circumstances and characteristics that would incline one to interpret each play in light of
the other. First instance: the issue of being passed over. In the opening scene of Measure for Measure
Escalus is passed over for the position of deputy in a most explicit fashion. The Duke praises Escalus
as peerless ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The latter commences the destabilizing of Othello and the ensuing tragedy. Third instance: reading
one s nature in one s face. Pompey, drawing transparently upon his street wise bag of tricks to free his
client, Froth, from the charge of fornication, bids Escalus to look into Froth s face (2.1.147 156) and
condemn him if he sees any harm in it. While Pompey literally may be pointing out the lack of any
signs of syphilis on Froth s face, this comic play upon the notion that one s guilt or innocence is
written upon one s face is contrasted by the frightening scene in Othello where, desperate in his
suspicions, Othello terrifies Desdemona by staring into her face to find some confirmation for his
maddening doubts of her fidelity (4.2.25 26). Fourth instance: actual and supposed procuress. Where
Isabella quite literally serves as a procuress in the assignation of Angelo with Mariana (the supposed
Isabella), Emilia is wrongly accused by Othello of being the same for Desdemona with Cassio. Fifth
instance: procuring called a mystery. When the executioner, Abhorson, complains that his mystery
(that is, his profession) will be tainted by a bawd s being made his assistant, Pompey with disarming
wit defends his former work as a legitimate profession by explaining how it too is a mystery (painting
being part of the prostitute s trade). The word mystery in this sense of profession

Motors, Gears, And Generators Lab
Motors, Gears, Generators Lab
Objectives:
1) Learn about motor and generator operation.
2) Generate and use motor torque/speed curves.
3) Learn about gear ratios and observe how they affect the rotational speed and torque of a motor or
generator.
Pre lab Questions
Answer the following questions before you begin the lab: For the motor characteristic curve shown
below, determine the equation of the line: torque (T) as a function of the rotational speed ( ). In the
figure below, is the stall torque and is the no load speed. The equation of the line should be written in
terms of the variables above.
How can you calculate the gear ratio of a simple gear train with two gears? List 4 expressions that you
could use to calculate the gear ratio. What is the difference between a motor and a generator? (Hint:
what are the energy conversions that occur in each)
Problem Description:
Motors and generators are used frequently in engineering applications. In fact, you will use them in
your final project. Gears (or pulleys) are usually used to transmit the power from the motor (input) to
the output. A pair of gears forms a simple gear train. As engineers, you will need to understand how
motors and generators work in order to pick appropriate ones to use in different applications or to
know how your design will behave when hooked up to a particular motor/generator. In your final
project for this course, you will use a generator (i.e. for wind power generation) and

Declassified Chairman Mao is a documentary that traces Mao Zedong s various stages in his life to
become China s most iconic and god like leader. His belief that China must be destroyed in order for
the country to be rebuilt, killed millions and ravaged the country in the process. The first part covers
his early life up to the Cultural Revolution (1949 1966). The second half covers the Cultural
Revolution up until his time of death (1966 1976) followed by the emergence of a new China and new
leadership. Some of the important events and people that are covered in the documentary include: the
Great Leap Forward, Mao s loss of power in the Communist Party, Mao s wife Jiang Qing, and her
role in helping Mao get back into power, Mao s philosophy that led to the Cultural Revolution, Mao s

I was also unaware that Mao had been married four times. I also knew little of Mao s fourth wife Jiang

The part of this scene reveals that Cordelia understands that her sisters are liars, in this way it
enlightens the audience of their dishonesty. Goneril answers that Cordelia should be banished. This
tender exchange anticipates the battle that heightens through the range of the accompanying

with Regan perceiving that Lear isn t just weak by virtue of development, however that he has never

Taking a Look at Color Psychology
Millions of people walk through the door of Starbucks each and every day. This coffee franchisee is
among one the top retailers in the United States. Their green two tailed mermaid logo is so widely
recognized that there is no longer a need to brand the Starbuck s name across their coffee cups. In
2013, the total revenue of this corporation exceeded $14 billion ( Starbucks Corp ). What has made
this coffee giant so successful? A big contender is color. Using color psychology, companies
manipulate people to buy from their brand by incorporating particular colors into their marketing
strategies and increasing the vulnerability people have when making purchases. The bottom line of a
business is to make the biggest profit possible and they do so by establishing relationships with their
costumers. Color is an important aspect in the marketing and advertising industry. 90% of snap
judgments are based on the color of a product alone ( The Psychology ). Retail stores try to create
aesthetically pleasing and attention getting window displays to attract costumers inside. Restaurants
do the same with their logos and signs. The more people that come to their business, the better chance
they have at attaining a larger profit. This applies to all business settings, retail, restaurant,
entertainment, etc. When a family is looking to go out to eat, they have a wide variety of options to
choose from. Every fast food chain hopes that when people are driving down the road, their sign will

business through electronics, motion pictures, music and financial services. Though it used to be a
leading manufacturer, Sony Corp has now been entangled with low sales rate and financial strain in
many of its product lines (Euromonitor, 2014). This paper demonstrates three events of Sony

Columbia Pictures Entertainment, Inc. for the amount of $3.4 billion. The Sony Group intended to
secure software in high quality so that Sony s wealth of hardware products could be promoted. By

Comparing The Prophets Of Haggai, Zechariah And Malachi
Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi were the three prophets from the period following the Babylonian
captivity. It was in 538 B. C. when Cyrus king of Persia issued a decree allowing the Jews to return to
Jerusalem and rebuild the temple (NIV Study Bible, 2008: 1418). That period was called Restoration
Period or post exilic period. Haggai was a post captivity prophet when Zerubbabel led the first group
back from Babylon. Together with Zechariah, they were concerned with the rebuilding of the temple
which had been destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians (Hag. 1 2; Zech. 4:8 NKJV). By
that time people were living comfortably in their paneled houses, his first message was to warn the
people that if they continued to neglect the Lord s house, they could expect nothing but drought. They
obeyed the word of the Lord and began rebuilding the temple (Haggai 1:12 15 NKJV)
Zechariah started his prophecy in 520 B.C., the same year that Haggai ministered but for only three
years. It was in the eighth month of the second year of the Persian king Darius (Zech. 1:1 NKJV). His

The Meaning Of Love, By John Clare
This poem was written by John Clare, an English poet. This poem is about love and he used the nature
to describe love because many poems of John Clare was about rural life and scenery. This poem will
present the love that is secret love. There are three stanzas, twenty four lines and eight lines in each
stanza. In the first stanza, in the line 1 2, when the speaker was young, he fell in love with a woman
and he kept his love all along. He never told her. The word buzzing of fly was like a sound of his heart
that was always loud in his heart and he cloud not control it. It was like he could not keep this secret
love. In the line 3 5, he did not dare to gaze her face. He felt that it had something in his mind that
made him could not dare to see her face like he had sin that was dark and could not touch the light.

word buzzing (line 2 in first stanza). In the first stanza the buzzing of fly was the sound of his heart,
but in the third stanza the sound of his heart was louder than first stanza because the line 20 said that
the fly s bass turned a lion s roar. It means that it was hard to hide his love and could not keep his love

Not only do the major leagues participate in the marketing process but so do the smaller, minor
leagues do as well. Every athletic organization, big or small, needs sports marketing for its survival.
Sports marketing is needed because it helps the athletic organizations obtain profit, which is needed
for survival. For a promotion to be successful, it must be profitable. And to be profitable, it must
enhance some, if not all, of the following goals: 1. Paid attendance, 2. Corporate tie ins, 3. Sponsor
value, and 4. Media coverage (Helitzer 317). Promotions must increase the number of people at the
event, or paid attendance, it also must enhance corporate tie ins, which are signs or give a ways at the
stadium. Sponsor value, or the value perceived by the sponsor must also be enhanced along with
media coverage. Media coverage is enhanced by sending the local or national media sources bulletins
about the events or by having press conferences. A strategy that a sports marketer must use is to
stagger the promotional gimmicks throughout the event. If one staggers the promotion, then the
audience is always aware of the event and looking out for the promotions.
Another objective of sports marketing is creating sales. The modern sports marketer is charged with
one simple responsibility: to increase the sources of revenue (Westerbeek 6). This includes obtaining

Thomas Trial
The Trial: Government Officials When it comes to trials, the government or the state are influential
and necessary parts of a trial within Scotland. There are greatly diverse laws within England and
Scotland, which needed to be obeyed by all. They required a person of law, such as a judge, which the
majority of witchcraft trials were not. Witchcraft within the country of Scotland was seen as
committing a crime against the law of Scotland as well as God. Therefore, the prosecution was seen as
justifiable according to both religion and the government. When it comes to Thomas and Jane s trial,

Cultural History Of Tattoos
The cultural performance and ritual of tattooing evolved over time, but holds historical significance
for membership into a group of people, age bracket, or culture. Polynesians used tattoos as a coming
of age ceremony, and symbol of adulthood. Boys would be put away for weeks at a time to transition
from boyhood and to heal from the harsh procedure. As the practice moved aboard ships, men tattooed
one another shoddily, creating connection and camaraderie between one another. As movement across
seas spread tattooing, port cities began to sprout parlors as artistic sailors settled down with this new
line of work; this became the only form of Polynesian art widely accepted and practiced in the West.
P.T. Barnum accentuated the novelty of tattoos and employed these visually interesting people to
performer. Sanitation practices were never consistent until the 1960 s when Sailor Jerry aimed to
create tattooing into an esteemed and respected art form. Realistic Tattoo opened as the first shop to
create custom, appointment based tattoo art. The styles of art varied widely across cultures. Oceanic
cultures commonly covered their peoples from head to foot in geometric designs, mostly consisting of
black lines. Sailor tattoos began as small, thin, stick and poke style tattoos. Prominent circus
performers such as Captain Consentenus, The Greek Albanian Tattooed Man and Nora Hildebrandt,
The Tattooed Women were covered in tattoos, maintaining oddity and division from common peoples.
When Sam O Reilly created the tattoo machine, colors, intricate and dynamic designs, and prominent
sailor imagery became abundant. Sailors tattooed themselves on hands and arms in the beginning, but
moved the designs to more coverable areas of the body when tattoos became associated with lower
class and delinquency. Pin up girls, naked ladies, and harsh imagery were common obscene tattoos
amongst sailors, and became integral to the American Traditional style, pioneered by Sailor Jerry.
Between World War I and World War II, sailors received tattoos in China and Japan. The style is
apparent through the imagery of dragons, geishas, and weaponry. Sailor Jerry diversified styles by
converging Japanese aesthetic with American

The Causes And Negative Effects Of Dysfunctional Family
See, I think there are roads that lead us to each other. But in my family, there were no roads just
underground tunnels. I think we all got lost in those underground tunnels. No, not lost. We just lived
there. by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. Dysfunctional families can lead to a few bad things in life, especially
towards their own children. When having a bad effect towards each other, they usually get lost in what
the problem is and forget about how to overcome them. The negative effects can also change an
individual s identity as well. Family dysfunction can have a negative effect on an individual s identity
in several ways.
One way family dysfunction affects an individual s identity is by lack of affection. First, when a child
does not get the affection needed from their family. For example, when a child starts to grow up. They
are needing affection whenever they want whether it being alone, tired, happy, or to feel encouraged.
It makes themselves feel good when getting enough affection from their parents. Yet without it, it
would make the child feel depressed and alone. In the Erickson s Stages of Psychosocial Development
by Kendra Cherry, Erickson talks about what would happen when a child does not get affection (stage
1). The child would start to isolate themselves from others around them when growing up and feel self
conscious. Secondly, when the child grows up and does not get enough affection, the child grows up
and will isolate themselves from society. For example,

Online Community Research Paper
Online communities on Tumblr and elsewhere are leading people into dark places that weren t there
before. People are self identifying with depression. They are confusing their normal and commonplace
emotions and feelings of sadness with this idea that they cannot come out of this dark place in which
they are in. Rather than seeking help from loved ones or medical professionals, they go to these online
communities to be understood, but to be understood, you must be accepted. This is leading young
people, especially females, to cut wrists and perform other instances of self harm, and take pictures to
document their feelings. To further their acceptance, they put quotes like So it s okay for you to hurt
me, but I can t hurt myself? and I want ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People use the word depression if they can t find their keys, or if they ve had a fight with their mother
or father, or if they ve had an argument with their boyfriend or girlfriend, if they didn t make the
school team or didn t do well on an exam, says adolescent psychiatry expert Dr. Stan Kutcher. When
we use the word depression for every negative emotional state, the word loses its meaning. If people
are overusing the term depression to describe normal, everyday sadness, it takes away from those who
actually suffer from this disease. As a person who has both a grandmother, a cousin, and multiple
friends who suffer from depression, I feel as though this term is offensive. The people in my life take
regularly prescribed medications from their doctors or see therapists on a weekly basis to help them
deal with their issues that they cannot normally deal with on their own as most people can. When they
are suffering from depression, they cannot bring themselves out of their sadness and feel better. People
who use the term depression to feel connected and like they belong in Tumblr s world of dark poetry
and romantic art do not truly understand what it is like to feel depressed, and although they may need
help, social media is not the way to do

Initial Literacy Assessment Report From Tch 209 I Am...
Initial literacy assessment report
For this semester of TCH 209 I am working with a second grade girl named Yainany. After taking a
few running records I found out that she is at a level H reading level which would be the equivalent of
a high first grade reader. To get to know my student I printed out a reading survey and a get to know
you worksheet. The reading survey was asking questions about what genres of books she likes, what
are some of her favorite things (books, tv shows, animals, sports, characters, jobs, activities), if
reading is fun for her, if reading is easy for her, if she reads at home, and how she likes to read. The
get to know you worksheet had her color her own person based on some of her favorite things like her
favorite color, if she likes to read, her favorite subject, the color of her eyes, and how many siblings
she has. These helped me get to know her as a reader and as a person by knowing how she reads and
what interests her. One assessment that I did with my student was three running records. I did a Level
J book, a Level I, and a Level H book. For the first book, Level J, she got an 85% which was not high
enough to be her reading level. I then went to a Level I book and she got an 92% which was still not
high enough to be her reading level. The last book I did in my running records assessment was the
Level H book and with that book she got a 95% which was high enough to be her reading level and
she does a great job reading books at that level.

Essay on Mountaintop Mining and Environmental and Energy...
Mountaintop mining has been practiced in the United States since the 1960s, primarily in the
Appalachian Mountains. The process involves removing all tress from the site, then the topsoil, and
then using explosives to remove the remaining soil and rock to reveal coal. The coal is removed and
processed, and then the mountaintop is reclaimed with soil or an appropriate substitute, and sometimes
replanted.6 While mountaintop mining in the Appalachians is only a small percentage of coal
produced by the United States, the issues surrounding it are complex and wide ranging. Some of the
many issues raised with mountaintop mining are: high unemployment (due to the lessened man power
needed to operate the mining machinery), deforestation, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They conduct impact studies, recommend legislation, evaluate regulations and standards, and work
with other branches of the federal government on lawsuits. Recently, they have rejected permits that
would contaminate or destroy water sources, and enacted fines against pollution violators.8,16
Directly in opposition to the EPA s regulation are the coal companies mining in the Appalachians.
Some of the biggest players in the industry are Alpha Natural Resources (formerly known as Massey
Energy), and Consol Energy. Some coal mining companies are more open to higher environmental
standards than others. In West Virginia the non profit Coal River Mountain Watch is a community
advocate group that work to expose the injustices and hazards of mountaintop mining.6 Also in West
Virginia is the Mountain Party, a political party affiliated with the national Green Party, whose main
platform is to end mountaintop mining.12 A major regulatory player is the West Virginia Department
of Environmental Protection, who issues many of the permits that allow for mountaintop mining and
waste removal practices. The people who live in the Appalachians are a majorly invested group. They
on one hand rely on mining companies for jobs and financial assistance and support (many bring in
medical professionals and other services to communities that otherwise couldn t afford them), but on
the other their very livelihoods are

My Life At The Hotel Room
One day in summer of 2015, my family and I went on a little vacation to Dallas,Texas. My mom and
dad went to hang out with their friends the whole vacation while me and my sister were bored in the
hotel room taking care of my little brat of a brother. But to our luck, there were two girls around my
age that are my friends. It kinda sucked for my sister because she had no one that was her age other
than three boys, but she won t talk to them. The adults wanted to have an adult day, but the whole
vacation it was adult days. I wanted to go swimming in the hotel room and so did the two girls plus
my sister.
They are responsible, They will be fine, let them go, all the adults said but maybe They were so
wrong. All the adults agreed to let us four girls go to the hotel alone.
Once we got to the hotel we sprinted up to the room. All of us decided to go to the pool. Everyone
took forever to get ready, but i was done in a flash. We got to the pool. Everybody was too chicken to
go to the pool. My sister being herself, she was paranoid because there was an old man who looked
creepy. One of the girls that was with us is very social and she didn t think before she does something.
her being herself called out to the old man
Hey how are you?
I m good how is the water? the creepy old man said
It s great, she responded
Well in that case i ll go and put my swimming suit on and meet you back in the pool, at that moment
we know that everything is going to go down hill. The old

Introduction to the assignment for the week.
Recommendations for Landslide Limousines
As we put this paper together, let s make sure we cover all the requirements:
Conduct a market evaluation by researching what companies in the relevant market are providing to
employees from a total compensation perspective.
Recommend a compensation structure.
Recommend the position in the market.
Create a total compensation and benefits strategy.

When deciding what wage to start an employee the company may want to separate employees by
experience and skill required for the position. All open position will be given compensation similar to
the marketplace average rate. The salary rate according to Simply Hire starts with the minimum wage
of $15.60, but not exciding$ 20.65 according to Pay Scale Human Capital. Landslide Limousine may
want to consider if their budget permits it to start their wage in between the minimum and max
making the start wage at $18.00 this amount will defiantly help the new company stand out from the
rest of the competition. Limousine chauffeurs average $30,000 a year in Austin, Texas while limousine
chauffeur averaged $18.22 an hour making $35,000 annually in Houston, Texas. By creating and
attractive compensation packages will ensure a successful recruitment rate, retention rate and
employee satisfaction. The process of creating a benefits package for 25 employees will feel as a
sensible expense, but the bottom line will be that at the end of the day the company will not make a
profit. The company must acknowledged that the benefits package will not be a reasonable expense.
C. Jose Based on the number of employees what is the best plan? And will the company add to the
plan?
D. Seneca Based on the annual net revenue of the company we chose does the plan work for the
employees and Company? Based on Landslides plan to have 25 employee s and a net

Role Of The Meatpacking Industry In Upton Sinclair s The...
The Jungle Book was a book written by Upton Sinclair in 1905 which discussed the meatpacking
industry. It exposed the industry as a dirty industry that was not very well regulated at all and that the
meat that they produced was often contaminated and could make individuals who ate it very ill. This
caused major outrage throughout America and in 1906 a meat inspection bill was passed by Congress
so that the meat industry could be regulated so individuals would not have to eat dirty meat like they
did before. This showed the power of the Progressive Era as a major flaw in regulations was shown in
1905 and just a year later there was major legislation passed which was there to regulate the industry
to protect the consumers. The Dawes Act was passed in 1890 with the intent of giving up tribal lands
to individual Native Americans along with Americans that were not Native Americans. There was
hope that this act would lead to the two groups being able to live side by ... Show more content on

roles in Europe during the war as well. They were a part of the military and were able to serve in non
combat roles. Women were better off after the war than before as it was a step towards equality as
women were starting to serve in similar roles to men. There were still many roles where men served
that women could not, however, it was a step in the right direction as women were being entrusted

Plato, Locke, And The Question Of Innate Ideas
Plato, Locke and the Question of Innate Ideas
Plato and Locke have opposite opinions on the matter of innate ideas. Plato argues that the recognition
of truth in reality is derived from the recollection of truth in the soul. A necessary part of Plato s
argument is that recollection of Truth depends upon the existence of an immortal soul. Locke, on the
other hand, rejects Plato s argument by stating that the recognition of truth is not dependent on
recollection but is rather self evident. In other words, Locke argues that one does not need to
understand truth to know it or admit of the existence of an immortal soul, for truth according to Locke
reveals itself by virtue of its being true. This paper will analyze the arguments of each philosopher and
show why I believe Plato to have the better argument on the matter of recollection and innate ideas in
the soul.
Analysis of Plato s Doctrine of Recollection in Meno and Phaedo Plato states that all inquiry and all
learning is but recollection (81). Socrates uses Meno s slave to show that knowledge comes from
recollection. This is Plato s way of stating that recognition of truth depends on the use of one s
intellect. Truth may be understood as the conformity of intellect with reality. By using his intellect,
Meno s slave recognizes the truth of the measurement of squares drawn by Socrates. Socrates calls
this action recollection. The act of recollecting, or using the intellect, is defined by Socrates as one

It is said that during the Song Dynasty (960 1127 AD) the Hakka military brought the Fan tzi kung fu
system into the Fujian region. Fan tzi (Tumbling or Eight Flash Boxing) is recognized by its compact,
short hand striking methods for which many southern systems are well known.
Subsequently, during the Qing Dynasty (1644 1912 AD), the Chu family martial arts were brought to
Fujian as well, which eventual evolved into the Southern Mantis style. As we can see throughout this
nine hundred year period, the Hakka were already starting to influence the martial arts in the southern
region. The preponderance of Hakka Kuen is said to have been influenced by Gee Sin Sim See who

After defeating Chiang Kai Shek in 1949, Mao formed the People s Republic of China and in order to
squelch any uprisings over 700,000 people were massacred in attacks on counter revolutionaries
during the years 1950 52. During the beginning of the cultural revolution, teaching a fighting art was
no longer tolerated however, since Mao s troops knew little about the Hakka masters, they weren t
persecuted and were able to continued teaching underground. A number of years after outlawing the
fighting arts the government realized that it may have acted in haste and risked losing a good part of
their history and culture by banning martial arts. They decided to allow kung fu, but only the forms
(kata) portion as well as trying to standardize the arts just as they do in gymnastics. Combat
techniques were not taught as they didn t want to take a chance on any uprisings if the people acquired
fighting skills. In 1958 the government established the All China Wushu Association, which was set
up as an umbrella organization to regulate martial arts training. The Chinese State Commission for

The Diffusion Of Water Across A Permeable Membrane Essay
INTRODUCTION
Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane (Raven et al. G 16). In this
experiment, dialysis tubing was used to mimic the selectively permeable membrane to show what
osmosis does when placed in different solute concentrations. We filled the dialysis tubes with different
percentages of solute and placed them in beakers full of another percentage of solute. Through this
experiment, I saw what happens when the tube becomes hypertonic, hypotonic, and isotonic. If two
solutions have unequal osmotic concentrations, the solution with the higher concentration is
hypertonic, and the solution with lower concentration is hypotonic. (Raven et al. 98) When two
solutions have the same osmotic concentration, the solutions are isotonic. (Raven et al. 98) My
hypothesis was that the bags placed in hypertonic solutions would shrink because the water would
leave the bag to go to the higher concentration. The bags placed in isotonic solutions would stay the
same weight because the water would be going in and out evenly. The bags placed in hypotonic
solutions would swell because water would rush into the cell where the higher concentration was. If
bag A shrinks then it is hypertonic. If bag B stays the same, then it is isotonic. If bag C and D swell,
then they are hypotonic.
METHODS
To conduct this experiment we used four pieces of dialysis tubing, four pieces of string, one beaker
filled with 10% sucrose and another beaker filled

Bridge Foundation Design Essay ASEISMIC FOUNDATION DESIGN PROCESS LESSONS LEARNED FROM TWO MAJOR PROJECTS : THE VASCO DA GAMAAND THE RION ANTIRION BRIDGES Alain PECKER Géodynamique et Structure, 157 Rue des Blains 92220 BAGNEUX, France 1 INTRODUCTION The choice of a design concept for a bridge foundation is guided by various factors; several of these factors are indeed of technical origin, like the environmental conditions in a broad sense, but others non technical factors may also have a profound impact on the final design concept. These aspects will be reviewed and illustrated by comparison of the solutions adopted for two major European cable stayed bridges: the Vasco da Gama bridge in Lisbon (Portugal) and the Rion Antirion bridge, near Patras (Greece). The foundations solutions for those two structures are described and an attempt is made to pinpoint the major factors that have guided the final choices. The innovative foundation concept finally adopted for the Rion Antirion bridge is further described in details to highlight how capacity design principles, which are familiar to structural engineers, can be implemented in earthquake resistant design of foundations. 2 ASEISMIC FOUNDATION DESIGN PROCESS The aseismic design process for foundations is a very broad activity requiring the synthesis of insight, creativity, technical knowledge and experience [1]. • 5. Analysis Of Howard Zinn s Indians History Of The Us... History 2112 Critical Analysis Paper #1 Dr. Pitts James Hamby Monday Wednesday 8:30pm Patriot s vs. People s Howard Zinn s, Peoples History of the US and Larry Schweikart s, Patriots History of the US are two analytical views on history that most people would consider politically conflicting. Zinn s Marxist book was widely praised by liberal activist and Schweikart s book is greatly publicized by conservatives like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. These two widely known historians turned their focus on writing two historical pieces that would fill in the historical holes that weren t being taught in the educational systems. It created a type of diverse learning that made for a great argument while still allowing the readers to understand all sides of the topics at hand. Zinn really dismissed the common white mans history and focused his approach on a multiple minority perspective. Schweikart s book is very different in the sense he takes aim at Zinn as he targets words like great discovery and war on terror which Zinn only used as scare quotes. Schweikart s book really reads like old history textbooks from the moral principals of the American founders that built this nation to the ideological view of American prosperity. No matter who shares the views of the political perspectives or condemns them because of its bias stances both historians felt responsible in writing the history of the United States. Zinn did not believe in an unbiased approach to history ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since Social Security and defined benefit plans are becoming a thing of the past, Americans are relying heavily on their own investments later in life. Defined benefit plans have given way for the rise of 401k and IRA plans which are defined by contributions of the individual. • 7. Essay about Redemption and Damnation in Measure for... Redemption and Damnation in Measure for Measure and Othello Measure for Measure and Othello are closely related. There is a thesis antithesis bond between these two plays. Much more than just sharing a trait or a source, the two constitute a paired study of the processes of redemption and damnation. Measure for Measure counterbalances Othello. Looking at the text of each play, one finds parallel and contrasting circumstances and characteristics that would incline one to interpret each play in light of the other. First instance: the issue of being passed over. In the opening scene of Measure for Measure Escalus is passed over for the position of deputy in a most explicit fashion. The Duke praises Escalus as peerless ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The latter commences the destabilizing of Othello and the ensuing tragedy. Third instance: reading one s nature in one s face. Pompey, drawing transparently upon his street wise bag of tricks to free his client, Froth, from the charge of fornication, bids Escalus to look into Froth s face (2.1.147 156) and condemn him if he sees any harm in it. While Pompey literally may be pointing out the lack of any signs of syphilis on Froth s face, this comic play upon the notion that one s guilt or innocence is written upon one s face is contrasted by the frightening scene in Othello where, desperate in his suspicions, Othello terrifies Desdemona by staring into her face to find some confirmation for his maddening doubts of her fidelity (4.2.25 26). Fourth instance: actual and supposed procuress. Where Isabella quite literally serves as a procuress in the assignation of Angelo with Mariana (the supposed Isabella), Emilia is wrongly accused by Othello of being the same for Desdemona with Cassio. Fifth instance: procuring called a mystery. When the executioner, Abhorson, complains that his mystery (that is, his profession) will be tainted by a bawd s being made his assistant, Pompey with disarming wit defends his former work as a legitimate profession by explaining how it too is a mystery (painting being part of the prostitute s trade). In fact, you will use them in your final project. Gears (or pulleys) are usually used to transmit the power from the motor (input) to the output. A pair of gears forms a simple gear train. As engineers, you will need to understand how motors and generators work in order to pick appropriate ones to use in different applications or to know how your design will behave when hooked up to a particular motor/generator. Their green two tailed mermaid logo is so widely recognized that there is no longer a need to brand the Starbuck s name across their coffee cups. In 2013, the total revenue of this corporation exceeded $14 billion ( Starbucks Corp ). What has made this coffee giant so successful? A big contender is color. Using color psychology, companies manipulate people to buy from their brand by incorporating particular colors into their marketing strategies and increasing the vulnerability people have when making purchases. The bottom line of a business is to make the biggest profit possible and they do so by establishing relationships with their costumers. Color is an important aspect in the marketing and advertising industry. 90% of snap judgments are based on the color of a product alone ( The Psychology ). Retail stores try to create aesthetically pleasing and attention getting window displays to attract costumers inside. Restaurants do the same with their logos and signs. The more people that come to their business, the better chance they have at attaining a larger profit. That period was called Restoration Period or post exilic period. Haggai was a post captivity prophet when Zerubbabel led the first group back from Babylon. This poem is about love and he used the nature to describe love because many poems of John Clare was about rural life and scenery. This poem will present the love that is secret love. The word buzzing of fly was like a sound of his heart that was always loud in his heart and he cloud not control it. It was like he could not keep this secret love. And to be profitable, it must enhance some, if not all, of the following goals: 1. Paid attendance, 2. Corporate tie ins, 3. Sponsor value, and 4. Media coverage (Helitzer 317). • 21. Cultural History Of Tattoos The cultural performance and ritual of tattooing evolved over time, but holds historical significance for membership into a group of people, age bracket, or culture. Polynesians used tattoos as a coming of age ceremony, and symbol of adulthood. Boys would be put away for weeks at a time to transition from boyhood and to heal from the harsh procedure. As the practice moved aboard ships, men tattooed one another shoddily, creating connection and camaraderie between one another. As movement across seas spread tattooing, port cities began to sprout parlors as artistic sailors settled down with this new line of work; this became the only form of Polynesian art widely accepted and practiced in the West. P.T. Barnum accentuated the novelty of tattoos and employed these visually interesting people to performer. Sanitation practices were never consistent until the 1960 s when Sailor Jerry aimed to create tattooing into an esteemed and respected art form. Realistic Tattoo opened as the first shop to create custom, appointment based tattoo art. The styles of art varied widely across cultures. Oceanic cultures commonly covered their peoples from head to foot in geometric designs, mostly consisting of black lines. Sailor tattoos began as small, thin, stick and poke style tattoos. Prominent circus performers such as Captain Consentenus, The Greek Albanian Tattooed Man and Nora Hildebrandt, The Tattooed Women were covered in tattoos, maintaining oddity and division from common peoples. When Sam O Reilly created the tattoo machine, colors, intricate and dynamic designs, and prominent sailor imagery became abundant. Sailors tattooed themselves on hands and arms in the beginning, but moved the designs to more coverable areas of the body when tattoos became associated with lower class and delinquency. Pin up girls, naked ladies, and harsh imagery were common obscene tattoos amongst sailors, and became integral to the American Traditional style, pioneered by Sailor Jerry. Between World War I and World War II, sailors received tattoos in China and Japan. The style is apparent through the imagery of dragons, geishas, and weaponry. I think we all got lost in those underground tunnels. No, not lost. We just lived there. by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. Dysfunctional families can lead to a few bad things in life, especially towards their own children. When having a bad effect towards each other, they usually get lost in what the problem is and forget about how to overcome them. The negative effects can also change an individual s identity as well. Family dysfunction can have a negative effect on an individual s identity in several ways. One way family dysfunction affects an individual s identity is by lack of affection. First, when a child does not get the affection needed from their family. For example, when a child starts to grow up. They are needing affection whenever they want whether it being alone, tired, happy, or to feel encouraged. It makes themselves feel good when getting enough affection from their parents. Yet without it, it would make the child feel depressed and alone. In the Erickson s Stages of Psychosocial Development by Kendra Cherry, Erickson talks about what would happen when a child does not get affection (stage 1). The child would start to isolate themselves from others around them when growing up and feel self conscious. Secondly, when the child grows up and does not get enough affection, the child grows up and will isolate themselves from society. For example, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After taking a few running records I found out that she is at a level H reading level which would be the equivalent of a high first grade reader. To get to know my student I printed out a reading survey and a get to know you worksheet. The reading survey was asking questions about what genres of books she likes, what are some of her favorite things (books, tv shows, animals, sports, characters, jobs, activities), if reading is fun for her, if reading is easy for her, if she reads at home, and how she likes to read. The get to know you worksheet had her color her own person based on some of her favorite things like her favorite color, if she likes to read, her favorite subject, the color of her eyes, and how many siblings she has. These helped me get to know her as a reader and as a person by knowing how she reads and what interests her. One assessment that I did with my student was three running records. I did a Level J book, a Level I, and a Level H book. For the first book, Level J, she got an 85% which was not high enough to be her reading level. I then went to a Level I book and she got an 92% which was still not high enough to be her reading level. The last book I did in my running records assessment was the Level H book and with that book she got a 95% which was high enough to be her reading level and she does a great job reading books at that level. ... Plato argues that the recognition of truth in reality is derived from the recollection of truth in the soul. A necessary part of Plato s argument is that recollection of Truth depends upon the existence of an immortal soul. Locke, on the other hand, rejects Plato s argument by stating that the recognition of truth is not dependent on recollection but is rather self evident. In other words, Locke argues that one does not need to understand truth to know it or admit of the existence of an immortal soul, for truth according to Locke reveals itself by virtue of its being true. This paper will analyze the arguments of each philosopher and show why I believe Plato to have the better argument on the matter of recollection and innate ideas in the soul. Analysis of Plato s Doctrine of Recollection in Meno and Phaedo Plato states that all inquiry and all learning is but recollection (81). Socrates uses Meno s slave to show that knowledge comes from recollection. This is Plato s way of stating that recognition of truth depends on the use of one s intellect. Truth may be understood as the conformity of intellect with reality. By using his intellect, Meno s slave recognizes the truth of the measurement of squares drawn by Socrates. Socrates calls this action recollection. The act of recollecting, or using the intellect, is defined by Socrates as one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. The Diffusion Of Water Across A Permeable Membrane Essay INTRODUCTION Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane (Raven et al. G 16). In this experiment, dialysis tubing was used to mimic the selectively permeable membrane to show what osmosis does when placed in different solute concentrations. We filled the dialysis tubes with different percentages of solute and placed them in beakers full of another percentage of solute. Through this experiment, I saw what happens when the tube becomes hypertonic, hypotonic, and isotonic. If two solutions have unequal osmotic concentrations, the solution with the higher concentration is hypertonic, and the solution with lower concentration is hypotonic. (Raven et al. 98) When two solutions have the same osmotic concentration, the solutions are isotonic. (Raven et al. 98) My hypothesis was that the bags placed in hypertonic solutions would shrink because the water would leave the bag to go to the higher concentration. The bags placed in isotonic solutions would stay the same weight because the water would be going in and out evenly. The bags placed in hypotonic solutions would swell because water would rush into the cell where the higher concentration was. If bag A shrinks then it is hypertonic. If bag B stays the same, then it is isotonic. If bag C and D swell, then they are hypotonic. METHODS To conduct this experiment we used four pieces of dialysis tubing, four pieces of string, one beaker filled with 10% sucrose and another beaker filled ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
