Youth Incarceration Research Paper
The Incarceration of Juveniles It is estimated that on any given day there are 80,000 youth
incarcerated in the United States, which is more than any other developed country in the
world(Townes, 1). Incarcerating youth before exploring other options is a social injustice. Judges
rather give short term solutions than permanently fix the problem. To understand why this is a social
injustice, four pieces of information must be known: the causes, who it affects and how, who s
responsible, and solutions in place. Incarcerating youth affects them in many different ways. One way
is the psychiatric damage prisons cause. Being in prison means that the child is not able to be with
their family and community, which can lead to feelings of loneliness and depression. Studies show
that incarcerated youth die from suicide at a rate two to three times more than non incarcerated youths
(Polish,1). In addition to mental health effects, incarceration at a young age affects the person s future
by lowering their chances of finding a job. When sentenced to a correctional facility, the child s
education is stopped and they become 38 times more likely to become a repeat offender(Koehler,1).
With no education and a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lack of resources is one of the major causes of high juvenile incarceration rates. Without alternative
programs prison is the only option. Another major fact is improper evaluations. Improper evaluations
lead to children, who are considered non public threats, being thrown in jail. Roughly 25% of youth
behinds bar are actually considered threats which means the remaining are considered non threatening
(Townes, 2). In addition, improper evaluations lead to youth with mental illnesses being placed behind
bars and not receiving medical attention. It s known that 65 to 70% of youth behind bars have a
disability, yet barley anything has been done to help them obtain the help they need(Townes,

Contemporary Form Of Materialism In The Women And Mildred...
Two films released amidst the years of the post American Great Depression and World War II, The
Women and Mildred Pierce, both similarly explore the issues surrounding the contemporary form of
materialism that has made itself present in society. The economic boom the war provided America
birthed a new form of ultra consumerism that swept the nation, changing everything in a matter of
years. These films act as social commentaries in such a way they are able to highlight the impact
materialism has made in all aspects of both the rich and middle class during this span in American
history. George Cukor introduces this as one of his main themes throughout his film The Women.
Using it to act as a key motivating factor for his character Mary Haines, a housewife and mother
seemingly trapped in a marriage with a cheating husband due to the luxurious lifestyle it provides. All
the other women in this film find themselves in similar situations yet none speak against what is
happening in fear of losing their possessions and comfortability. Similarly, Michael Curtiz s Mildred
Pierce, uses the desire for things such as clothes, houses, and a generally expensive lifestyle as driving
factors for both Mildred Pierce and her Daughter, Veda. Veda Pierce has been raised in a home where
she has always received anything she s wanted. As she grows up we find her desires have amassed to
an all time high. So much so when she learns her mother won t be able to give her the opulent life she

Candide, The Idea Of Optimism
Comedy of ideas, a form a satire and also known as a form of high comedy, is a when two ideas of
thoughts are put directly against each other. Typically it involves characters arguing about ideas that
involve politics, social classes, and society as a whole. Characters use wit, mockery, and clever
language as a way to mimic and mock their challenger. In the case of Candide, the idea of optimism
(Pangloss views) and pessimism (Martin) are pinned against each other. Optimism is an attitude in
which one remains hopeful and positive despite the negative circumstances. Pangloss view of
optimism involves his belief that everything happens for a reason. Pangloss is stuck in this particular
state of mind through out the novel. He firmly believes that the death, mishaps and misfortunes of
others are the way the world is and God has a plan. Candide also starts out in this state of mind due to
the fact that Pangloss mentored him and shaped his way of thinking. However, unlike Pangloss,
Candide progresses in his way of thought. In this novel, Pangloss represents Voltaire s attack on
philosophical optimism and the non progressive social consequences involved with optimism.
Voltaire depicts three lifestyles in Candide. Candide starts out by living in a Paradise , a representation
of the Garden of Eden. Then there is a Utopia which is his time living in El Dorado, a place where
everyone is equal and competition is nonexistent. This is essentially the most perfect

Literary Merit Analysis
In enjoyment reading, the sole purpose of the book is to entertain the reader. In a literary merit, the
book may have a number of purposes. It may entertain, give a message or suggestion about the current
society, or various other purposes. Books read for enjoyment are oftentimes fun to read and are
appealing to a wide audience. However, these books are read by a majority of people only one time
through because they have a simple message that is easy to understand. On the other hand, literary
merit books may not be quite enjoyable in the same way that fun books are, but they can be enjoyable
in the sense that they have a deeper meaning. Many people may read the same literary merit and can
get several different messages from it along with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
George Orwell succeeded in creating a story that gives a very bleak and possible future. Since the
future is unknown, there are a near infinite possibilities for stories, each as possible as the next. 1984
offers a different kind of look into the future. The majority of books that depict the future show a
hopeful version of the future. Even other dystopian stories give the characters hope in some way shape
or form. 1984 depicts a future with no hope and any hope that is given is immediately taken away. If
you are a man Winston, you are the last man. Your kind is extinct; we are the inheritors. Do you
understand that you are alone? You are outside history, you are nonexistent. (Orwell 270). O Brien s
words in this passage take any hope from Winston that men might prevail over the Party. This bleak
portrayal is Orwell s way of warning that the only way to stop this future is to prevent it before it
happens. For once this future comes to be, there is no stopping it.
The Name of the Wind was written in the fantasy genre. Fantasy books are very common and have
many similarities. While The Name of the Wind has many distinct elements that make it a story, it also
has many similar aspects of fantasy, such as a form of magic, tales of adventure, powerful characters,
etc. Unlike 1984, The Name of the Wind isn t very unique from the other stories in the genre and these
books are not relevant to society

The House Of The Spirits By Isabel Allende
Isabel Allende was born on August 2, 1942 in Lima, Peru. Her father, Tomás Allende, was first cousin
of Salvador Allende, President of Chile from 1970 to 1973. She is a Chilean American writer whose
works contain mostly magic realism, which incorporates fantastic or mythical elements into otherwise
realistic fiction. Allende has been called the world s most widely read Spanish language author . She
uses experiences from her Chilean childhood and the political situation in Chile to write her most
famous book, The House of the Spirits.
Isabel Allende had many family difficulties that altogether resulted in her being one of the most
successful female writers in history. Allende was born to Tomás and Francisca who divorced when
Isabel was three. (McCann). As a result of the divorce, Francisca and Isabel moved to Santiago to her
grandparents house where she spent her childhood. Her grandmother s interest in fortune telling and
astrology (the study of the influence of the stars on human behavior), as well as the stories she told,
made a lasting impression on Allende. (McCann). This impression influenced Isabel to start reading
and writing. Following the months after her uncle Salvador Allende s assassination, Isabel realized it
was getting exceedingly dangerous for her family to live in Chile. Therefore, Isabel fled to Venezuela
along with her husband and kids in 1973. (McCann) After moving to Venezuela she started writing her
first book, The House of the Spirits.

The Debate Regarding The Deterrent Effect Of The Death...
The use of the death penalty is one of the most controversial public policies, and laws, related to the
sanctions imposed upon individuals convicted of a capital crime, or death eligible offense, as defined
by law. The administration of the death penalty, or capital punishment, for those individuals convicted
of a capital crime remains the subject of debate because of the finality associated with executions and
whether any deterrent effect can be attributed to the use of the death penalty (Schmalleger, 2012). The
debate regarding the deterrent effect of the death penalty has been addressed in various research
studies, but econometric models that address the deterrent effect of the death penalty have been

Carl Jung And Alfred Adler
On May 6, 1856 one of the world s most influential theorist was born, Sigmund Freud. During his
childhood and adolescence years, his scholastic performance stood out. He graduated high school with
honors, and set out to study medicine at Vienna University. While studying medicine, he was
introduced to Ernest Von Bruke, who worked at the university as a physiology professor . Bruke
assisted Freud in obtaining a grant to study with a psychiatrist, by the name of Jean Martin Charcot. In
1881 Sigmund Freud finally earned his doctoral degree in medicine. In 1902, Freud began working as

His development of the General Systems Theory was due to him believing human experiences, along
with social and scientific problems could be thought of, in terms of systems. According to Francis
Turner in the 4th edition of Social Work Treatment, Bertalanffy s goal was to achieve a common
perspective and clear view of the world as a great organization , where all disciplines could be
understood in their place (Turner, 1996, p.604). During his professional career Von Bertalanffy
worked in Vienna, London, Canada and the USA, as a professor at local universities (Ludwig Von
Bertalantffy, n.d.). His life came to an end at the age of 70, in June 1972 in New York (Turner, 1996,
p.604).
Tenants of Psychodynamic and Systems Theory
Systems theory was proposed in the 1940s by the biologist Ludwig von Bertalanffy (General Systems
Theory, 1968). Systems theory describes human behavior in terms of complex systems. It is premised
on the idea that an effective system is based on individual needs, rewards, expectations, and attributes
of the people living in the system. According to this theory, families, couples, and organizations
members are directly involved in resolving a problem even if it is an individual issue. System theories
emphasizes reciprocal relationships between the elements that constitute a whole. These concepts also
emphasize the relationships among individuals, groups, organizations, or communities and mutually

Satire As A Satire
Comedy is a fickle medium. It is hard for a comedian to predict how an audience or individuals will
react to a joke. Satire is even more uncertain due the medium s socio political nature. The purpose of
satire can be misconstrued due to its tendency to obscure or simplify the point it is trying to make for
the sake of a joke. In Mathew Bevis Taking Liberties , he argues that individuals with different world
views can interpret a satirical piece in very different ways. In this paper, I shall use the satirical sketch
A Politically Correct Minute by the Royal Canadian Air Farce to argue that satire becomes and
ineffective tool in conveying a political message due to Bevis argument that the viewer shapes the
meaning of the sketch. The creator might have tried to establish a moral high ground, but it is hard to
defend due to the medium being reliant on the viewers sensibilities over the creator s intent, thus
making us unsure if a moral high ground actually exists. The Canadian satirical comedy troupe, The
Royal Canadian Air Farce, released the A Politically Correct Minute sketch in October 2001. This
sketch was a reaction to a petition created that year by the feminist organization, The Famous Five
Foundation. The organization called upon the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tim Parks says that if [satire] doesn t point toward positive change, or encourage people to think in a

Canadian Air Farce, it has an alienating effect that drives us to disdain politics and people with
opinions that differ from our own (Speltz 2015). Discussion becomes near impossible with satire
providing surface level understanding of political issues, especially if satire becomes a person s sole
source of news (Speltz 2015). Critical thinking and problem solving becomes a moot point.

European Exploration Crimes
The activities of the great European explorers in the Age of Exploration can be viewed both as
positive historical achievements or crimes against humanity, depending on what side of the looking
glass you are on. I, personally, would label the activities of the great Europeans as crimes against
humanity. Although slavery already existed in parts of the world, it was done on a much smaller scale.
However, once the Europeans entered the picture they planted seeds for and encouraged a century of
civil wars between the Africans in order to establish a growing industry of overseas slave trading.
Additionally, the Europeans explorers also came with the idea of expansion of Europe religion. The
Roman Catholic Church had made it their agenda to

Results The data has excluded 5 participants because their information was not fully completed and
their data was not analysed. The independent variable of the experiment the group the participants
were random assigned to the economic uncertainty condition or the control condition of the article.
The dependent variable in this experiment was the amount of risk taking each participant made on a
scale of 1 being completely risk averse and 2 being solely risk taking. The experiment also measured
approach motivation with the BAS scale and anxiety with the BIS scale. The results of our data clearly
display the framing effect, as shown by people taking more risks in conditions where decisions were
framed as losses in comparison to gains, even when both decisions were equal mathematically. The
primary results indicated that there was no main effect of risk taking and economic uncertainty.
Furthermore, there was no link found between the economic uncertainty and the trait approach
motivation on risky decision making. Overall both main hypothesises were not supported by the data.
In exploratory analyses of the data reveals there is an interaction effect between the economic
uncertainty group and trait anxiety on risky decision making. This can be seen in figure 1 as people
with high trait anxiety that are randomly assigned to the economic uncertainty group demonstrated

experimental group there will be a control group. Children will be chosen through arbitrary obligation
to be placed in the experimental group or the control group. The six groups will be placed in a kid

jumping, agitation, etc. At the end of the experiment the parents will be asked to grade their children
on a scale of one to ten of hyperactivity, with one being less hyper and ten being more frenzied. Lastly,
the results will be put into two slabs. The first slab will be the control group with a sum of the scores
from before on one side and the sum from after on the other side (the same will be done for the
experimental group results). The greater the difference between the before scores and after scores will
allow for a valid conclusion. For example, if the total for the control group before the drug was 50 and
total after the drug were 29, the difference would be 21. If the same were done for the experimental

William became involved in Wales shortly after he had taken England was because he would have

Also, Scotland could provide refuge for anyone that had rebelled against William (including Edgar)
which would have furthered the tensions. The disputes of land had also caused problems for William.
Lands such as Cumbria and Northumbria were disputed between Malcolm and William. This became
worrying for William because parts of his kingdom were being threatened to be taken from him which
would give Malcolm more land and support against William. However, the threat of Scotland was not
as substantial as some historians make it out to be. In 1072, William marched through Scotland with
relative ease. Although Williams army was fearfully exposed according to Purser, the Scottish did not
capitalize on this opportunity. This could be interpreted as Malcolm showing he did not want to fight
against William. This point links into the treaty of Abernethy. In the same year Malcolm met William
at abernethy and signed a treaty which shown that he recognised William as his superior. According to
purser, in good faith , Malcolm kicked Edgar out of his court which would have made further
rebellions in the north very difficult. Overall, Scotland was initially a threat around the time of the
Northern rebellion however the treaty of Abernathy played a main factor in extinguishing the threat of

The Stock Market
In 2001, it struck everybody as odd when a blue chip stock went bankrupt less than a year after it paid
its top 5 executives a total of $282.7 million. The stock market is notorious for being seductively
tricky; being the sole contributor to the making and breaking of many men. However, this time it was
clear that this wasn t an ordinary unexpected decline. Enron Corporation, a former American energy
company, had to have had something going on behind the scenes to cause the largest chapter 11
bankruptcy of its time. As the house of cards collapsed, it became clear that investors were blindsided
by one of the largest instances of pump and dump stock fraud the market had ever seen. While it may
be an enigma to many, the stock market does have some simple ground rules that hold true almost all
the time, no matter what stock one plans on investing in. The backbone of the stock market is
generally coined buy low, sell high. This term is short and sweet, but it encompasses all that is
required to make money in the stock market. To make money, all somebody has to do is buy shares of
a stock when the price is low and undervalued, and then sell those shares when the price goes up.
Ignoring brokerage fees and federal taxes, this is essentially all one has to do to make a profit; rinse
and repeat. This same rule works in reverse if someone is trying to avoid losing money on an
investment. If shares of an overvalued stock are owned and the price is expected to decline, one would

A Telephone Call Monologue Analysis
A Telephone Call by Dorothy Parker is an intriguing inner monologue, that portrays the infatuation
some partners have with their significant other. I personally found the story to be rather compelling,
constantly engaging the readers with Parker s use of repetition. Although it definitely isn t my favorite
story, it had an abundance of interesting aspects. A scene that I found amusing is when the pemberley
female role questions whether her concern over the males lack of communication is reasonable, or not.
She asks asks herself whether he won t call, yet rather will come over to her house, without leaving
any verbal message. That idea startles her, for what if he sees she weeping in her house, what will that
cause him to do? Based off of that idea, she wishes that he, himself, would begin crying too, in a
tantrum like fashion. She wishes the worst emotional pain ever would be inflicted upon him. I found
this scene to be rather interesting because it shows the innermost workings of her mind. It portrays
how she have a plethora of positive feelings towards this male, yet after a few seconds of assuring
thoughts, she fall into a fit of blind rage. The idea of back and forth propositions is very interesting to
read, especially when after a scene filled with clashing statements, a completely different idea is
thrown into the character s mind. There are a plentiful amount of scenes I enjoyed, or was humored
by, yet, this one I found to be the most intriguing. At first, the story frustrated me. I presumed based
off of the first couple of paragraphs that it would be about a stereotypical woman, who is obsessive
towards the male. I thought that the idea of the novel was somewhat patriarchal, because the woman
was almost belittling herself for being so distraught on the idea of the male not communicating with
her. Yet, I found the idea of God interesting in this story. For me, I found that God, in some aspects of
the story, wasn t supposed to have any religious aspect to it, rather God was the female character
referring herself. She was contemplating to herself, asking herself questions, and wishing a plethora of
wishes to herself, not God. As an example, when she says, Oh, God, please don t let me telephone

Bolt Action Rifle History
A bolt action rifle is a very reliable, and very useful tool that was invented in 1824 by Johann
Nikolaus von Dreyse. The bolt action rifle has been used for hunting, protection, and has proved to be
a reliable weapon for military use in the defense of our country. The United States purchased 900 bolt
action rifles in 1862 which were used in the American Civil War at the battle of Antietam. These rifles
were single shot, paper cartridges that proved to be much faster in reloading than the muzzle loading
rifle previously used by American troops. Since then, America has used these rifles in nearly every

primer compound. After rotating the bolt all the way upward, pull the bolt all the way back until you
can no longer move it. This action ejects the previous shell and the chamber is now empty and ready
to receive the next shell. If the rifle is a single shot bolt action, now is when a new cartridge will need
to be manually inserted into the open chamber of the rifle. Then the bolt is pushed all the way forward
which loads the new shell into the chamber. If the rifle is an internal or an external magazine fed rifle,
the bolt will strip the next round from the magazine and push it forward until it is locked into the
firing chamber. Now, push the bolt all the way down. This action locks the shell in the chamber with
what are called locking lugs attached to the rotating receiver. This will lock the bullet in the chamber
and free the firing pin. Release the safety on the rifle which will be located either on or near the trigger
guard or on top of rifle back where the stock and metal action of the rifle meet. The rifle is now ready

High Stakes Testing Essay
High Stakes Testing
Albert Einstein once stated, not everything that counts can be counted and not everything that can be
counted counts. High stakes testing attempts to determine the knowledge a person has obtained
throughout grades K 12. These standardized tests are being used to judge a person s ability to graduate
from high school and also judge if a child has enough knowledge to proceed to the next grade level.
Throughout this paper, I will be discussing how these tests do not accurately portray one s
intelligence, how they have increased drop out rates, and also show the damaging psychological
affects they have had.
High stakes testing does not accurately determine a student s intelligence. In 1999, the National ...

This study also stated that, every standardized test has a certain error of measurement which means
that a given score could actually be off by several points in either direction. High stakes, however,
have single scores as the cut off point. Those scores do not account for the inaccuracies that all test
publishers acknowledge (azstandards). There have been many studies in which students take the same
test on different days, and their score varies greatly. High stakes testing does not give any
consideration to these errors.
High stakes testing increases drop out rates. Texas adopted a test much like the AIMS in the 1990 91
school year. TAAS (Texas Assessment of Academic Skills) testing has produced a very astounding
number of minority dropouts. The Arizona Standards study states that there has been a 30% increase
in dropouts among Hispanic and African American students (azstandards). Walt Haney, who wrote an
article on the effects of the TAAS test, claims that, a convergence of evidence indicates that during the
1990 s, slightly less than 70% of students in Texas actually graduated from high school
(http://www.epaa.asu.edu/epaa/v8n41). The Alliance for Childhood organization discussed how, there
is growing evidence that the pressure and anxiety associated with high stakes testing is unhealthy for
children...and may undermine the development of positive social relationships and attitudes towards

Soil Moisture Lab Report
Soil moisture also affects the yield and competitiveness of the introduced strain. Cowie et al. (1996a,
b) reported that waterlogging at any time have an adverse effect on the seed yield. Drought conditions
severely affect the viability of different species and strains of rhizobia (Joshi et al., 1981; Osa Afiana
and Alexander, 1982). Singh et al. (1992) reported that at a available soil moisture of 45 per cent
nodule number and dry weight of nodules increased while at 30 per cent available soil moisture, seed
yield increased. Strains isolated from arid areas are more tolerant to dessication and high temperature
than strains isolated from cooler and wet region. Bitorrini and Beringer (unpublished, cited by

Almendras and Bottomley (1985) also concluded that there was a correlation between pH and
phosphorus application. Phosphorus limitation was exacerbated by low pH and the combination of pH
and phosphorus levels could have strong influence on competition for nodulation.
Iron plays an important role in micro organisms and plants. This is a component of cell and its
deficiency can cause growth inhibition, sporulation, decrease in RNA and DNA synthesis and, can
also change the cell morphology. Iron exists in two states (Fe2+ and Fe3+) and therefore, it is suitable
as an electron transporter. Iron is also known to regulate the bio synthesis of porphyrins, toxins,
vitamins, antibiotics, cytochromes, pigments, siderophores and aromatic compounds. Iron is present as
a cofactor or required by different enzymes and proteins such as peroxidase, superoxide dismutase,
nitrogenase, hydrogenase, glutamate synthase, rhibonuclotide diphosphate reductase, aconitase,
DAHP, synthatase, cytochromes, ferridoxin and flavoproteins. Iron storage protein like ferritin in
animals and bacterio ferritin in micro organisms have also been discovered (Stiefel and Watt, 1979).

James D. Watson s The Double Helix
James D. Watson s The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA is
his version of what happened between 1950 and 1953 and how he and his colleague Francis Crick
discovered the structure of DNA. In this essay I will establish how Watson presents himself, how he
describes his own personality and character as a scientist, the nature of science and the characteristics
of the scientific community. In particular, how he depicts the the character and personality of other
scientists specifically Linus Pauling and Rosalind Franklin. I will do this in relation to Mertonian
norms Communism and Organised Skeptism as well as Ian Mitroff s counter norms Secrecy,
Passionate Commitment and Dogmatism for Watson s choice to indirectly make reference to these
norms and counter norms aid us in the sense that they play the crucial role of facilitating us in

It is constantly recurring throughout his autobiographical statements as he recounts how each small
discovery by the scientists he encounters help find a simple explanation, model for the structure of
DNA from the complex ideas and evidence they began with. It is seen that each scientist had
something to contribute whether it was a discovery or knowledge in their area of expertise that was
beneficial in the discovery of the DNA structure. For example, when Crick saw Crystallographer
V.Vand s discovery of a theory for the diffraction of x rays by helical molecules though he thought the
theory was invalid it peaked his curiosity in finding an accurate theory. Furthermore, in Watson s
interview it is seen that when it comes to science he thinks that if there is scientific knowledge that
will affect human beings , scientists, the scientific community should work to ensure that they

chivalry Essay
Ancient to Modern: The Transformation of Chivalry
During the medieval era, great adventures and accomplishments of unimaginable feats were told of
mortal humans know as Knights. Knights were seen to be the elite, displaying their gentleman like
manners throughout every aspect, which they lived, from social events to acts of brutal combat against
their adversaries. Every action of a Knight would be done with honor, courage, respect and courtesy.
Knights who demonstrated these characteristics were seen as chivalrous. Webster s New World
Dictionary defines chivalry as, The qualities of an ideal knight, courage, honor, gallantry and courtesy

King Arthur feels obligated to take the challenge, seeing that no other knight has accepted, but Sir
Gawain intervenes. Sir Gawain explains to King Arthur of the reason for his decision to sacrifice
himself and save the noble king: The loss of my life would be least of any; that I have you for uncle is
my only praise; My body, but for your blood, is barren of worth (PG 1467 line 356 358). Sir Gawain
does honor to the court of Camelot when he decides to take the place of a needed leader in the deadly
challenge. His honor here is in the fact that he realizes he is not as important as the king, and so Sir
Gawain takes on the burden. Today, modern teachers and professors show the same honor when they
forsake the higher paying jobs that are offered to them in order to teach and instruct the leaders of
tomorrow. They realize, like Sir Gawain, that the human race is more important than their own
ambitions, and so they sacrifice all of the renown they could achieve to make the human race better in
the future.
Courage is another key aspect of chivalry. Sir Gawain is courageous throughout the story, but
especially when he has to meet his death from the Green Knight. Even though he knows he will be
killed, he also knows that it is his destiny, and he will not try to escape. He says to the Green Knight as
he readies himself to be killed, For I shall stand to the stroke and stir not an inch, till your

one, however, benzophenone can be the counteract to synthesise the others. A fulvalene is a
hydrocarbon obtained by formally cross conjugating two rings through a common exocyclic double

Acetonitrile was the solvent of choice, as it showed optimal performance in the selective epoxidation
of functionalized alkenes with TBHP. In such solvent, the primary product of the reaction observed at
short reaction times was the corresponding trans stilbene epoxide (3), as expected. This product is due
to epoxidation of the C C double bond catalyzed by titanium(IV) centers in the presence of alkyl
hydroperoxides and such behavior is fully consistent with several previous observations. In addition,
thanks the use of anhydrous TBHP, the reaction proceeded mainly following a heterolytic oxidation
pathway and hence with a good selectivity to the desired epoxide. However, at longer reaction times
(72 h), the reaction proceeded further and the major observed product was surprisingly benzophenone
(5). Even if thiobenzophenone is quite stable, although it photoxidizes in air to form benzophenone
and sulfur. Thiobenzophenone is deep blue and dissolves readily in many organic solvents. One of the
first reported syntheses of thiobenzophenone involves the reaction of sodium hydrosulfide(2equal) and
benzophenone dichloride. However, in the reaction scheme of the second method, a mixture of gaseous
hydrogen chloride and hydrogen sulfide are passed into a cooled solution of benzophenone in ethanol.

Comparing Millet And Homer s Paintings
Both artworks Man with a Hoe 1860 1862, and The cotton pickers 1876 have subjects in the people
and occupations of everyday world. Millet and Homer s most of the works are related with agriculture
and life of poor and middle class people. The reason I choose these artworks because they are related
with occupations of everyday life. Also they are related with realism. Bad time comes on everybody,
and both artists have been involved in the controversy about their art works. Jean François Millet was
accused of being a political trouble maker artist. His painting like Man with a Hoe caused a
controversy in the 1860s. The standing man s expressions in the picture were translated as a
communist protest. There was some negative reviews on some of the images in Winslow Homers
paintings were shown ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are some parts in the artworks that are related with each other. For example, there are bright and
hue colours in the artworks, and the artists used primary colours in them. There are no uses of
shadows in the cotton picker s artwork. The use of plants in the paintings makes them relates with
nature and free form style art. Millet man with a hoe was made with a pen and brushes. The texture of
these pieces is rough because the artists used hue colours. The use of colours in the artworks affects
the quality of the art because if Homer only used the dark black colour in the cotton pickers, then
viewer cannot recognize the cotton plant in the painting. Both are medium style paintings made with
oil on canvas. The culture is different in the paintings. The cotton picker is related with American
culture and the man with a hoe is related with French culture. The main reason they are connected
with each other because it shows the hard working images of peoples inside them. It does not matter
what culture they are belong to. They are made in late 1800s during war time, and that is the reason
they got involved in

Normal Stereotypes In Stargirl
Everyone is their own person. People change mostly due to fact that they want to be accepted. Every
once in a while you´ll find someone who is really themselves. In the book ¨stargirl¨ a teenage girl goes
to a new high school where everyone there conformed to one. Stargirl , whos real name is Susan, is
different. Different than everyone at that school. She wears outrageous outfits, has a pet rat, plays a
ukelele, she even sings happy birthday to everyone in front of everyone! According to Mica High, she
by far doesn t apply for the Normal stereotype.
Stargirl catches the eye of another student that goes to the high school as well with her odd behaviors.
Leo is one of the many normal kids at the school, who will soon acquire strong feelings towards
Stargirl. He has no idea what type of journey he is about to go through. Archie, who is a older man
that likes to somewhat teach the kids around the neighborhood. Archie is a major key in helping Leo
understand Stargirl and who she is. Stargirl notices Leo and gives her eyes pleasure. She then begins
to leave little hints that she likes him. Leo approves, but also is embarrassed due to the fact that she s

From a Single Cafe to Starbucks of Today Essay
The first Starbucks location opened in 1971 with the original location in Seattle Washington, the heart
of Pike Place Market. Starting as a single shop specializing in high quality coffee and brewing
products, the company grew to be the largest roaster in Washington with multiple locations until the
early 1980 s. CEO Howard Schultz, recognized a great opportunity and began working with the
founder Jerry Baldwin. After a trip to Italy to find new products, Schultz realized an opportunity to
bring the café community environment he found in Italy to the United States and the Starbuck s brand
we all know today began to take form.

The company prides itself on creating an environment for people to meet, outside of work and home,
what they call the third place (CNBC Business, 2011).
To formulate a differentiated business level strategy Starbucks must evaluate their customer needs,
customer groups, and their unique competencies. This will be the way that Starbucks differentiates
themselves from other firms competing in the coffee and specialty products industry. Starbucks has
effectively differentiated themselves from their competitors in a manner that establishes brand loyalty
and satisfies customers. This level of differentiation would not be possible without working together
to achieve a common goal: offering customers a premium product while striving to obtain a profit.
Using the five forces model of competition Starbucks provides quality coffee with a unique
experience, which separates them from their competition. The new single cup brewing coffee line is
spanning differentiation and low cost leadership. While it is at a lower cost than a normal cup of
Starbuck coffee and convenient for home coffee users, it is still unique from other products in the
market. The gifts that are sold in the Starbuck chains are in the focused differentiation category as they
accommodate the coffee lover, and are unique items found only in the Starbucks stores.
The specialty industry consists of chain restaurants that offer primarily specialty or gourmet products.
To compete effectively, firms must be

Primary Deviance And Secondary Deviance
Each theory may aid in predicting and preventing teacher sex scandals. With female teachers and
considering the rational choice and labeling theories, there are some links within. For the labeling
theory, as mentioned above, there are two parts: the primary deviance and secondary deviance.
Primary deviance where one labels within self, secondary, where ones position is labeled by the
public. Many people here of female teacher, male student sex scandals in the media; while these
events, although tragic, can be used as prediction. It is important to identify the reasoning behind the
scandal and watch for potential contributing factors. After prediction is identified, prevention can be
set into place as well. Predicting is preventing. Once you can place a potential threat by identifying the
relationship between teachers and students, it will be easy to prevent. Using the aspects of the labeling
theory can assist in identifying that the public has labeled many female teachers in the role of
inappropriate. Knowing this label beforehand assists in being able to prevent potential
inappropriateness by being able to know possibilities. It is also important for other faculty of the
school, as well as parents, to go in with an open mind knowing the increased rate of teacher student
sex scandals. With this being said, they must familiarize themselves with key signs and possibilities
clues as to whether their student may be victimized or acting inappropriately. The labeling theory

Epistemic Virtue And The Ecological Crisis Summary
In Byron Williston s essay, Epistemic Virtue and the Ecological Crisis , Williston examines Joel Kovel
s ideas on what it takes to get ahead in a capitalist society: To succeed in the marketplace and to rise to
the top, one needs a hard, cold, calculating mentality... None of these traits are at all correlated with
ecological sensibility or caring (Kovel, quoted in Williston, p. 250;252). Kovel s ideal person is one
that is always looking for deeds that are self serving. Kovel is implying that to be successful in life,
one must put morals as an afterthought in order to move ahead in this capitalistic society. I disagree
with Kovel statement, based on how Kovel s claims on how to be successful is not true for all
professions. Furthermore, I disagree with Kovel s statements that if someone is successful, they cannot
be environmentally sensitive, or possess the trait of being caring by looking at the cases of Leonardo
DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. When Kovel states to rise to the top, one needs to have a
calculating mentality, this may be true for some people, but not all. Kovel is picturing the stereotype
of the businessman , one who puts their career over being emotionally caring and environmentally
friendly. Yet someone s career ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This leads me to conclude that Kovel believes that one must choose between being successful or being
environmentally friendly and caring. When looking at the example of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie,
both high paying actors and supporters of the environment, they are the parents to six children
(Roberts 2018). One would consider the raising of a child, shows that they contain the caring
personality trait. Therefore, Jolie and Pitt can be successful in their fields, sensitive about the
environment, and are still caring people, as they are parents. This goes against Kovel s idea of what
type of people Pitt and Jolie should

  • 2. Youth Incarceration Research Paper The Incarceration of Juveniles It is estimated that on any given day there are 80,000 youth incarcerated in the United States, which is more than any other developed country in the world(Townes, 1). Incarcerating youth before exploring other options is a social injustice. Judges rather give short term solutions than permanently fix the problem. To understand why this is a social injustice, four pieces of information must be known: the causes, who it affects and how, who s responsible, and solutions in place. Incarcerating youth affects them in many different ways. One way is the psychiatric damage prisons cause. Being in prison means that the child is not able to be with their family and community, which can lead to feelings of loneliness and depression. Studies show that incarcerated youth die from suicide at a rate two to three times more than non incarcerated youths (Polish,1). In addition to mental health effects, incarceration at a young age affects the person s future by lowering their chances of finding a job. When sentenced to a correctional facility, the child s education is stopped and they become 38 times more likely to become a repeat offender(Koehler,1). With no education and a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lack of resources is one of the major causes of high juvenile incarceration rates. Without alternative programs prison is the only option. Another major fact is improper evaluations. Improper evaluations lead to children, who are considered non public threats, being thrown in jail. Roughly 25% of youth behinds bar are actually considered threats which means the remaining are considered non threatening (Townes, 2). In addition, improper evaluations lead to youth with mental illnesses being placed behind bars and not receiving medical attention. It s known that 65 to 70% of youth behind bars have a disability, yet barley anything has been done to help them obtain the help they need(Townes, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Contemporary Form Of Materialism In The Women And Mildred... Two films released amidst the years of the post American Great Depression and World War II, The Women and Mildred Pierce, both similarly explore the issues surrounding the contemporary form of materialism that has made itself present in society. The economic boom the war provided America birthed a new form of ultra consumerism that swept the nation, changing everything in a matter of years. These films act as social commentaries in such a way they are able to highlight the impact materialism has made in all aspects of both the rich and middle class during this span in American history. George Cukor introduces this as one of his main themes throughout his film The Women. Using it to act as a key motivating factor for his character Mary Haines, a housewife and mother seemingly trapped in a marriage with a cheating husband due to the luxurious lifestyle it provides. All the other women in this film find themselves in similar situations yet none speak against what is happening in fear of losing their possessions and comfortability. Similarly, Michael Curtiz s Mildred Pierce, uses the desire for things such as clothes, houses, and a generally expensive lifestyle as driving factors for both Mildred Pierce and her Daughter, Veda. Veda Pierce has been raised in a home where she has always received anything she s wanted. As she grows up we find her desires have amassed to an all time high. So much so when she learns her mother won t be able to give her the opulent life she yearns ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Candide, The Idea Of Optimism Comedy of ideas, a form a satire and also known as a form of high comedy, is a when two ideas of thoughts are put directly against each other. Typically it involves characters arguing about ideas that involve politics, social classes, and society as a whole. Characters use wit, mockery, and clever language as a way to mimic and mock their challenger. In the case of Candide, the idea of optimism (Pangloss views) and pessimism (Martin) are pinned against each other. Optimism is an attitude in which one remains hopeful and positive despite the negative circumstances. Pangloss view of optimism involves his belief that everything happens for a reason. Pangloss is stuck in this particular state of mind through out the novel. He firmly believes that the death, mishaps and misfortunes of others are the way the world is and God has a plan. Candide also starts out in this state of mind due to the fact that Pangloss mentored him and shaped his way of thinking. However, unlike Pangloss, Candide progresses in his way of thought. In this novel, Pangloss represents Voltaire s attack on philosophical optimism and the non progressive social consequences involved with optimism. Voltaire depicts three lifestyles in Candide. Candide starts out by living in a Paradise , a representation of the Garden of Eden. Then there is a Utopia which is his time living in El Dorado, a place where everyone is equal and competition is nonexistent. This is essentially the most perfect ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Literary Merit Analysis In enjoyment reading, the sole purpose of the book is to entertain the reader. In a literary merit, the book may have a number of purposes. It may entertain, give a message or suggestion about the current society, or various other purposes. Books read for enjoyment are oftentimes fun to read and are appealing to a wide audience. However, these books are read by a majority of people only one time through because they have a simple message that is easy to understand. On the other hand, literary merit books may not be quite enjoyable in the same way that fun books are, but they can be enjoyable in the sense that they have a deeper meaning. Many people may read the same literary merit and can get several different messages from it along with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... George Orwell succeeded in creating a story that gives a very bleak and possible future. Since the future is unknown, there are a near infinite possibilities for stories, each as possible as the next. 1984 offers a different kind of look into the future. The majority of books that depict the future show a hopeful version of the future. Even other dystopian stories give the characters hope in some way shape or form. 1984 depicts a future with no hope and any hope that is given is immediately taken away. If you are a man Winston, you are the last man. Your kind is extinct; we are the inheritors. Do you understand that you are alone? You are outside history, you are nonexistent. (Orwell 270). O Brien s words in this passage take any hope from Winston that men might prevail over the Party. This bleak portrayal is Orwell s way of warning that the only way to stop this future is to prevent it before it happens. For once this future comes to be, there is no stopping it. The Name of the Wind was written in the fantasy genre. Fantasy books are very common and have many similarities. While The Name of the Wind has many distinct elements that make it a story, it also has many similar aspects of fantasy, such as a form of magic, tales of adventure, powerful characters, etc. Unlike 1984, The Name of the Wind isn t very unique from the other stories in the genre and these books are not relevant to society ... • 6. The House Of The Spirits By Isabel Allende Isabel Allende was born on August 2, 1942 in Lima, Peru. Her father, Tomás Allende, was first cousin of Salvador Allende, President of Chile from 1970 to 1973. She is a Chilean American writer whose works contain mostly magic realism, which incorporates fantastic or mythical elements into otherwise realistic fiction. Allende has been called the world s most widely read Spanish language author . She uses experiences from her Chilean childhood and the political situation in Chile to write her most famous book, The House of the Spirits. Isabel Allende had many family difficulties that altogether resulted in her being one of the most successful female writers in history. Allende was born to Tomás and Francisca who divorced when Isabel was three. (McCann). As a result of the divorce, Francisca and Isabel moved to Santiago to her grandparents house where she spent her childhood. Her grandmother s interest in fortune telling and astrology (the study of the influence of the stars on human behavior), as well as the stories she told, made a lasting impression on Allende. (McCann). This impression influenced Isabel to start reading and writing. Following the months after her uncle Salvador Allende s assassination, Isabel realized it was getting exceedingly dangerous for her family to live in Chile. Therefore, Isabel fled to Venezuela along with her husband and kids in 1973. (McCann) After moving to Venezuela she started writing her first book, The House of the Spirits. During ... The use of the death penalty is one of the most controversial public policies, and laws, related to the sanctions imposed upon individuals convicted of a capital crime, or death eligible offense, as defined by law. The administration of the death penalty, or capital punishment, for those individuals convicted of a capital crime remains the subject of debate because of the finality associated with executions and whether any deterrent effect can be attributed to the use of the death penalty (Schmalleger, 2012). His development of the General Systems Theory was due to him believing human experiences, along with social and scientific problems could be thought of, in terms of systems. According to Francis Turner in the 4th edition of Social Work Treatment, Bertalanffy s goal was to achieve a common perspective and clear view of the world as a great organization , where all disciplines could be understood in their place (Turner, 1996, p.604). During his professional career Von Bertalanffy worked in Vienna, London, Canada and the USA, as a professor at local universities (Ludwig Von Bertalantffy, n.d.). His life came to an end at the age of 70, in June 1972 in New York (Turner, 1996, p.604). Tenants of Psychodynamic and Systems Theory Systems theory was proposed in the 1940s by the biologist Ludwig von Bertalanffy (General Systems Theory, 1968). Systems theory describes human behavior in terms of complex systems. It is premised on the idea that an effective system is based on individual needs, rewards, expectations, and attributes of the people living in the system. According to this theory, families, couples, and organizations members are directly involved in resolving a problem even if it is an individual issue. • 9. Satire As A Satire Comedy is a fickle medium. It is hard for a comedian to predict how an audience or individuals will react to a joke. Satire is even more uncertain due the medium s socio political nature. The purpose of satire can be misconstrued due to its tendency to obscure or simplify the point it is trying to make for the sake of a joke. In Mathew Bevis Taking Liberties , he argues that individuals with different world views can interpret a satirical piece in very different ways. In this paper, I shall use the satirical sketch A Politically Correct Minute by the Royal Canadian Air Farce to argue that satire becomes and ineffective tool in conveying a political message due to Bevis argument that the viewer shapes the meaning of the sketch. The creator might have tried to establish a moral high ground, but it is hard to defend due to the medium being reliant on the viewers sensibilities over the creator s intent, thus making us unsure if a moral high ground actually exists. The Canadian satirical comedy troupe, The Royal Canadian Air Farce, released the A Politically Correct Minute sketch in October 2001. This sketch was a reaction to a petition created that year by the feminist organization, The Famous Five Foundation. The organization called upon the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, once the Europeans entered the picture they planted seeds for and encouraged a century of civil wars between the Africans in order to establish a growing industry of overseas slave trading. The results of our data clearly display the framing effect, as shown by people taking more risks in conditions where decisions were framed as losses in comparison to gains, even when both decisions were equal mathematically. The primary results indicated that there was no main effect of risk taking and economic uncertainty. Furthermore, there was no link found between the economic uncertainty and the trait approach motivation on risky decision making. Overall both main hypothesises were not supported by the data. Along with many other countries, they would have known that the situation in England was unstable and William may have thought Wales were planning an invasion. Also, Scotland could provide refuge for anyone that had rebelled against William (including Edgar) which would have furthered the tensions. The disputes of land had also caused problems for William. Lands such as Cumbria and Northumbria were disputed between Malcolm and William. This became worrying for William because parts of his kingdom were being threatened to be taken from him which would give Malcolm more land and support against William. However, the threat of Scotland was not as substantial as some historians make it out to be. In 1072, William marched through Scotland with relative ease. Although Williams army was fearfully exposed according to Purser, the Scottish did not capitalize on this opportunity. This could be interpreted as Malcolm showing he did not want to fight against William. This point links into the treaty of Abernethy. In the same year Malcolm met William at abernethy and signed a treaty which shown that he recognised William as his superior. According to purser, in good faith , Malcolm kicked Edgar out of his court which would have made further rebellions in the north very difficult. • 17. The Stock Market In 2001, it struck everybody as odd when a blue chip stock went bankrupt less than a year after it paid its top 5 executives a total of $282.7 million. The stock market is notorious for being seductively tricky; being the sole contributor to the making and breaking of many men. However, this time it was clear that this wasn t an ordinary unexpected decline. Enron Corporation, a former American energy company, had to have had something going on behind the scenes to cause the largest chapter 11 bankruptcy of its time. As the house of cards collapsed, it became clear that investors were blindsided by one of the largest instances of pump and dump stock fraud the market had ever seen. While it may be an enigma to many, the stock market does have some simple ground rules that hold true almost all the time, no matter what stock one plans on investing in. The backbone of the stock market is generally coined buy low, sell high. This term is short and sweet, but it encompasses all that is required to make money in the stock market. To make money, all somebody has to do is buy shares of a stock when the price is low and undervalued, and then sell those shares when the price goes up. • 18. A Telephone Call Monologue Analysis A Telephone Call by Dorothy Parker is an intriguing inner monologue, that portrays the infatuation some partners have with their significant other. I personally found the story to be rather compelling, constantly engaging the readers with Parker s use of repetition. Although it definitely isn t my favorite story, it had an abundance of interesting aspects. A scene that I found amusing is when the pemberley female role questions whether her concern over the males lack of communication is reasonable, or not. She asks asks herself whether he won t call, yet rather will come over to her house, without leaving any verbal message. That idea startles her, for what if he sees she weeping in her house, what will that cause him to do? Based off of that idea, she wishes that he, himself, would begin crying too, in a tantrum like fashion. She wishes the worst emotional pain ever would be inflicted upon him. I found this scene to be rather interesting because it shows the innermost workings of her mind. It portrays how she have a plethora of positive feelings towards this male, yet after a few seconds of assuring thoughts, she fall into a fit of blind rage. The idea of back and forth propositions is very interesting to read, especially when after a scene filled with clashing statements, a completely different idea is thrown into the character s mind. There are a plentiful amount of scenes I enjoyed, or was humored by, yet, this one I found to be the most intriguing. At first, the story frustrated me. I presumed based off of the first couple of paragraphs that it would be about a stereotypical woman, who is obsessive towards the male. I thought that the idea of the novel was somewhat patriarchal, because the woman was almost belittling herself for being so distraught on the idea of the male not communicating with her. Yet, I found the idea of God interesting in this story. For me, I found that God, in some aspects of the story, wasn t supposed to have any religious aspect to it, rather God was the female character referring herself. She was contemplating to herself, asking herself questions, and wishing a plethora of wishes to herself, not God. As an example, when she says, Oh, God, please don t let me telephone ... The bolt action rifle has been used for hunting, protection, and has proved to be a reliable weapon for military use in the defense of our country. The United States purchased 900 bolt action rifles in 1862 which were used in the American Civil War at the battle of Antietam. These rifles were single shot, paper cartridges that proved to be much faster in reloading than the muzzle loading rifle previously used by American troops. Since then, America has used these rifles in nearly every war fought. It wasn t until 1874 when the French began bolt action rifle production of their own, that metal cartridges were invented and ... The firing pin is the needle looking rod that strikes the butt of the shell and ignites the primer compound. This action ejects the previous shell and the chamber is now empty and ready to receive the next shell. If the rifle is a single shot bolt action, now is when a new cartridge will need to be manually inserted into the open chamber of the rifle. Then the bolt is pushed all the way forward which loads the new shell into the chamber. If the rifle is an internal or an external magazine fed rifle, the bolt will strip the next round from the magazine and push it forward until it is locked into the firing chamber. Now, push the bolt all the way down. This action locks the shell in the chamber with what are called locking lugs attached to the rotating receiver. • 22. High Stakes Testing Essay High Stakes Testing Albert Einstein once stated, not everything that counts can be counted and not everything that can be counted counts. High stakes testing attempts to determine the knowledge a person has obtained throughout grades K 12. These standardized tests are being used to judge a person s ability to graduate from high school and also judge if a child has enough knowledge to proceed to the next grade level. Throughout this paper, I will be discussing how these tests do not accurately portray one s intelligence, how they have increased drop out rates, and also show the damaging psychological affects they have had. This study also stated that, every standardized test has a certain error of measurement which means that a given score could actually be off by several points in either direction. High stakes, however, have single scores as the cut off point. Those scores do not account for the inaccuracies that all test publishers acknowledge (azstandards). There have been many studies in which students take the same test on different days, and their score varies greatly. High stakes testing does not give any consideration to these errors. High stakes testing increases drop out rates. Texas adopted a test much like the AIMS in the 1990 91 school year. TAAS (Texas Assessment of Academic Skills) testing has produced a very astounding number of minority dropouts. The Arizona Standards study states that there has been a 30% increase in dropouts among Hispanic and African American students (azstandards). Walt Haney, who wrote an article on the effects of the TAAS test, claims that, a convergence of evidence indicates that during the 1990 s, slightly less than 70% of students in Texas actually graduated from high school (http://www.epaa.asu.edu/epaa/v8n41).
