This study was carried out to investigate the current status of simulation use during teaching within health sciences and engineering faculties at Saudi universities. Simulation in teaching has been shown to be effective at enhancing student understanding. However, the current status of simulation use in teaching, especially in Saudi universities, remains unclear. To address this, here we aimed to: determine the ability of simulation to achieve appropriate levels of realism; identify the effectiveness of simulation at improving skills, awareness, and knowledge in health sciences and engineering; and test whether simulation improves the critical and evaluative thinking of students. Data were collected using online questionnaires. We found that simulation is being effectively applied in Saudi universities.

Accurate prediction and early identification of student at-risk of attrition are of high concern for higher educational institutions (HEIs). It is of a great importance not only to the students but also to the educational administrators and the institutions in the areas of improving academic quality and efficient utilisation of the available resources for effective intervention. However, despite the different frameworks and various models that researchers have used across institutions for predicting performance, only negligible success has been recorded in terms of accuracy, efficiency and reduction of student attrition. This has been attributed to the inadequate and selective use of variables for the predictive models. This paper presents a multi-dimensional and an integrated system framework that involves considerable learners’ input and engagement in predicting their academic performance and intervention in HEIs. The purpose and functionality of the framework are to produce a comprehensive, unbiased and efficient way of predicting student performance that its implementation is based upon multi-sources data and database system. It makes use of student demographic and learning management system (LMS) data from the institutional databases as well as the student psychosocial-personality (SPP) data from the survey collected from the student to predict performance. The proposed approach will be robust, generalizable, and possibly give a prediction at a higher level of accuracy that educational administrators can rely on for providing timely intervention to students.

By Professor Bart Rienties, Head of Academic Professional Development, Institute of Educational Technology, The Open University, UK Abstract The Open University UK (OU) has been implementing learning analytics since 2014, starting with one or two modules to its current practice of large-scale implementation across all its 400+ modules and 170.000+ students and 4000+ teaching staff. While a range of reviews (e.g., Adenij, 2019) and scholarly repositories (e.g., Web of Science) indicate that the OU is the largest contributor to academic output in learning analytics in the world, behind the flashy publications and practitioner outputs there are a range of complex issues in terms of ethics and privacy, data infrastructures, buy-in from staff, student engagement, and how to make sense of big data in a complex organisation like the OU. Based upon large-scale big data research we found some interesting tensions in both design and educational theory, such as: – 69% of engagement by students on a week by week basis is determined by how teachers are designing courses (i.e., learning design and instructional design indeed directly influence behaviour and cognition), but many teachers seem reluctant to change their learning design based upon data of what works and what does not work (e.g., making sense of data, agency); – How teachers engage with predictive learning analytics (PLA) significantly improves student outcomes, but only a minority of teachers actually use PLA; – Some disadvantaged groups engage more actively in OU courses, but nonetheless perform lower than non-disadvantaged students. During this CELDA keynote I would like to share some of my own reflections of how the OU has implemented learning analytics, and how these insights are helping towards a stronger evidence-base for data-informed change. Furthermore, by sharing some of the lessons learned from implementing learning analytics on a large scale I hope to provide some dos and don’ts in terms of how you might consider to use data in your own practice and context.

Effectiveness of Online Teaching in Covid Lockdown Dental Students Viewpoint

The dreadful COVID 19 has seriously affected the education system globally. New technology of learning through online has become a substitute to solve this situation partly. The present study has been done to analyse the perceptions of dental students who pursued their course through online teaching. 76 students 61 girls, 15 boys of age 17 20 years, participated in the study. After taking informed consent, a self administered questionnaire was circulated by google forms. The results were represented graphically. Majority of the students expressed the need for a crash course revision in a traditional method. They opined that the online teaching made them difficult to understand the concepts. Many felt physically isolated and were not satisfied with the online teaching. Most of the students replied that teachers’ feedback and availability helped to clarify their doubts. Only few students agreed for a blended learning approach post COVID. Children have benefited from therapy sessions that provide ongoing activities to aid their ability to engage in healthy social interactions. However, less is known about how K–12 schools might implement programs for this group of individuals to provide additional opportunities for growth, or even if and how school programs would be of assistance in the end. There is a gap in understanding the possibilities of implementing such programs in schools to foster the social and mental health of children with autism. The six articles I selected for this assignment present research on different types of therapeutic programs that have been used to promote social interactions in children with autism. Annotated Bibliography on Autism Wimpory, D. C., & Nash, S. (1999). Musical interaction therapy – therapeutic play for children with autism. Child Language and Teaching Therapy, 15(1), 17–28. https://doi.org/10.1177/026565909901500103 Wimpory and Nash provided a case study for implementing music interaction therapy as part of play therapy aimed at cultivating communication skills in infants with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The researchers based their argument on films taken of play-based therapy sessions that introduced music interaction therapy. To assess the success of music play, Wimpory and Nash filmed the follow-up play-based interaction between the parent and the child. The follow-up interactions revealed that 20 months after the introduction of music play, the child developed prolonged playful interaction with both the psychologist and the parent. The follow-up films also revealed that the child initiated spontaneously pretend play during these later sessions. After the introduction of music, the child began to develop appropriate language skills. Since the publication date for this case study is 1999, the results are dated. Although this study found that music interaction therapy is useful, emerging research in the field has undoubtedly changed in the time since this article was published. Wimpory and Nash wrote this article for a specific audience, including psychologists and researchers working with infants diagnosed with ASD. Their focus means that others beyond these fields may not find the findings applicable to their work. I am interested in the role of music in therapy to foster social and mental health in children with ASD. doctoral study prospectus 9 Nature of the Study To conduct the current study, qualitative, quantitative, and mixed research approaches were considered. I selected the quantitative method because it helps test hypotheses through a deductive approach. Quantitative method involves measuring constructs through quantitative variables and statistical tools to test hypotheses to address research questions (O'Dwyer & Bernauer, 2016). In contrast, qualitative research is characterized by an inductive approach, where perceptions and subjective experiences of individuals are used to develop themes of a research phenomenon (Östlund et al., 2011). The mixed approach, which involves aspects from both the quantitative and the qualitative approaches, is useful in studies specifically suited for that purpose, as such a combination involves limitations inherent in both approaches (Bryman, 2006). I will not use the qualitative method as the purpose of this study does not require an inductive approach, nor will I use mixed methods approach as the additional requirements for qualitative elements are not necessary in this study. For research design, I considered descriptive design and correlational design. I selected the correlational design because the purpose of this study involves examining the relationship between variables. Correlational research design entails the measurement of two or more relevant variables, as well as assessing the relationship between variables (Crawford, 2014). In contrast, descriptive research design is used to gather quantifiable data and describe the nature of a demographic segment (Mertens, 2014). I will not use descriptive research design as the purpose in this study is not to describe the nature of employees at the selected business organization but to examine the relationship between transformational leadership components, namely idealized influence, inspirational motivation, and individualized consideration and employee retention. The present study was undertaken to study the attitude towards research, the objective of this work is to determine the attitude towards research of the research scholar of science steam and arts stream with special reference to gender, assessing the attitude towards research is the primary problem of this research. Students often rate courses in research methods unconstructively and observe them as difficult. The work aims to review the attitude towards research among the PhD scholars and to find the various dimensions of attitude. This work also explores the major reasons that have high level of importance in their decision to join doctoral course. In this regard, the present descriptive study aims to describe the attitude among the research scholars of Thanjavur District with proposed minimum of 306 respondents through proportionate random sampling method. The study had adopted standardized tools which are high risk for developing mental health issues among the Ph.D scholars. The study found that more than half of the respondents 48 percent had medium level of academic attitude dimension of scholar attitude. Hence the issue of mental health of research scholars need to be Self-concept, Adjustment and Mental Health of the Research scholars. The level of frustration and worry increase day by day. To obtain social support they adopt various techniques. They are engaged in various activities.
