The Negative Effects Of Nuclear Weapons
In a split second, a single atomic bomb can wipe out and level an entire city. For what purpose do
nuclear weapons serve other than to kill and destroy? Therefore, nuclear weapons should not be
produced, much less used, anywhere on Earth. They are incredibly dangerous and devastating to
human life, cause social tension between countries during times of war, and leave toxic radiation in
the environment that fatally affects nearby life for decades after. Nuclear weapons harness nuclear
reactions to generate their power. There are two types: fission/atom bombs, which use nuclear fission,
or thermonuclear/hydrogen bombs. Which use nuclear fusion (Cochran Norris 1). Nuclear weapons
are classified as weapons of mass destruction and are the most dangerous weapons ever created. As of
now, there are about 9,495 known, unretired nuclear weapons; 4,300 in Russia, 4,000 in the US, 60 in
North Korea, etc. (Gould 7). In 1970, the Treaty on the Non Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which
was created to limits the increase of nuclear weapons, went into effect and has been signed by the US,
Russia, the UK, etc. (Nuclear Threat Initiative 1 3). During World War II, on the 6th and 9th of
August, 1945, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima, Japan and Nagasaki, Japan.
Immediately, 90% of the cities were demolished and more than 150,000 people were instantly killed,
most of which were civilians (AtomicBombMuseum.org 2 3). Between the initial bombings and 1950,
it was

Natural Gas, Pollution, and Our Environment
Natural Gas, Pollution, and Our Environment
In today s society there is a great need for environmental protection. Things that happened during our
parents and grandparents age have caused a great concern for our ozone, our air, and our environment.
You constantly hear about the many sources of pollution, but we hardly ever hear about the solutions.
In this paper I will present one possible solution to the air pollution problem that has been caused by
too many automobile emissions being released into the air. This possible solution deals with switching
from diesel gas, to fuel trucks and bus fleets, to natural gas. I will discuss how this switch would assist
in the reduction of air pollution and in this way help the environment. ... Show more content on

2. Safe Transportation Fuel:
· One reason it is safer to transport is that natural gas will not spill to the ground and create pools of
explosive gasoline. Natural gas will flow into the air and disappear into the atmosphere.
· Another safer transportation factor would have to be that natural gas will not burn at temperatures
less than 1,200 degrees. Gasoline on the other hand will ignite at a mere 600 degrees. According to a
survey conducted by the American Gas Association, this will help in reducing deaths caused by
automobiles catching on fire during an auto accident.
3. Safety Advantages:
· Natural gas is not toxic and cannot be ingested.
· Natural gas is not a carcinogenic substance.
· Natural gas is not corrosive.
All of the above mentioned factors make it seem apparent that natural gas is the best option at this
point in time. But are there any known disadvantages of natural gas? The only disadvantage that I was
able to locate would be the start up costs. It will be much more expensive in the beginning to use
natural gas. The cost is not because the gas is more expensive, it is because there will have to be
modifications made to gas stations, bus depot fueling stations, and of course, modifications to our
automobiles. A typical natural gas bus would cost between $30,000 and $50,000 more than a diesel
fueled bus. This means that instead of spending approximately $270,000 per

Canadian Identity And Culture Essay
Canadian identity and history is grounded in the culture and the traditions of the Aboriginal peoples.
Popularly known as being the first inhabitants of Canada, Aboriginals strive to enrich the country s
cultural mosaic through their existence and thus are an integral part of this nation. Although
Aboriginals are deemed as an important part of the Canadian social fabric today, history (past and
present) documents a contrasting image to this ideology where it is coloured by the economic, social,
and physical hardships of Aboriginal societies in Canada. Scarred by the social and racial injustices of
the past, Aboriginal education is a major continuing issue with regards to minority education in
Canada. According to J. P. White and Dan Beavon (2009), Aboriginal educational attainment lags
significantly behind the Canadian population (p. 3). Between 1981 and ... Show more content on

In effort to improve these education attainment rates as well as to improve the quality of learning
amoung Aboriginal peoples, the implementation of indigenous learning methods such as storytelling
becomes an effective starting point. In particular, storytelling is seen as a tool used to preserve
Aboriginal history and culture. In support, McKeough et al. (2008), affirms this notion as well: It is
through the telling of stories and legends that First Nations people preserve what is most important to
them language, traditions, culture, and identity. Stories are used to provide a sociocultural and
historical account of the community knowledge from elders to youth, ensuring its survival with new
generations (p. 150). Many Aboriginal students find it difficult to learn and grasp concepts due to the
predominately Eurocentric teaching methods that are employed within the

Sonnet 130 Analysis Essay
The explication of Sonnet 130 When you think of a sonnet from Shakespeare s time, you think of a
lovey, mushy poem about how the love the writer has for one. Sonnet 130, written by William
Shakespeare, totally goes against the typical sonnets of the time. Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 was
written in the early 1600s. Though it was written in this time, it was not like the rest of the sonnets.
Most of the sonnets at this time were modeled after Petrarch s famous sonnet sequence. He idolized
and idealized his mistress, named Laura. In his sonnets, he praises her beauty, her worth, and her
perfection using metaphors based on natural beauties. While these metaphors had already become a
cliché, they were still the accepted technique for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is also the possibility that she is of a darker race. In line four, he compares her hair to black
wires, which is not as flattering. Black is also not a color found in nature, but the absence of light.
Which also signifies sadness, darkness, and evil. In the past, men set a high value on women s hair; it
was a sign of femininity and beauty. Moving to the second quatrain which states, I have seen roses
demasked, red and white, / But no such roses see I in her cheeks;/ And in some perfumes is there more
delight/ Than in the breath from my mistress reeks. First, the reader starts with an explicit I , which
means he is only talking for himself and his mistress. In lines five and six, the speaker does not see the
red and white roses in her cheeks. Both colors were already used, which means that neither the noble
white or passionate red, are found in her. Roses are also a sign of love and passion. The smell of the
mistress is described in lines seven and eight. The idea that reek and stink are the same thing did not
develop until a century later. The mistress breath was not as pleasant as some perfumes. Perfume was
an expensive and worthy object, but can be a pleasant smell in nature too. The last quatrain states, I
love to hear her speak, yet well I know/ that music hath a far more pleasing sound;/ I grant I never saw
a goddess go;/ My mistress when she walks treads on the

Essay On Swatch
Swatch is a watch brand that was created in the late 1970s. It has a strong identity which separates it s
from many other watch brands such as rolex, ice, dolce and gabbana. For example rolex is a brand that
is known to be expensive and valuable. Ice are known for plastic watches which have exciting colours
and are bold. Swatch watches are also made out of plastic and is marketed to fit anyone of any age. As
a company Swatch has had a huge connection with the pop culture industry. You may have recognised
the brightly coloured watches that reminds you of pop art. Things like that is what makes Swatch

Swatch was also founded 33 years ago in 1983 by Nicolas Hayek and the headquarters base was in

Hitting the 80s it made a break through by remodelling the company then only had to compete with 50
components.
The general watches are usually silver or gold and quite bold. Hakey s designs were more phenomenal

to be bright with a funky unique design on the strap.
The Swatch logo incorporates the swiss flag which signifies the country of the watchmaker. There are
three main colours to the Swatch logo which are black, red and white. Those three colours are often
seen as something important which should get your attention in a way it shows it s dominance,
excellence and powerful reputation. By studying the logo it incorporates a custom typeface which is

Yentl The Yeshiva Boy Essay
An adaptation of Isaac Singer s short story Yentl: The Yeshiva Boy, Yentl discusses the issue if gender
stereotyping imposed as religious and societal constructs as well as same sex relationships. A
transgender hero by contemporary standards, Yentl fights against the confines of her existence as a
Jewish female in a patriarchal society. Yentl possesses masculine qualities, proven through her ability
to convincingly disguise herself as a man, evident during the prologue when she enters the play as her
male persona Anshel. From the opening scene the audience quickly learns that Yentl finds her gender
to be a curse because of the limitations it imposes upon her. Even her father, a leading religious figure,
seems to acknowledge that Yentl behaves more like a man than a woman stating that Even Heaven
makes mistakes! when answering while Yentl was born a woman (I, i, 10). He uses this belief to
justify teaching her the Torah and Talmud, a privilege secluded exclusively to men. For a majority of

From my reading experience, Singer s presents Yentl s and Hadass marriage as a comedic relationship
although it also demonstrates the theme of the play. Hadass was originally betrothed to Avigdor but
because Avigdor s brother commits suicide, Hadass parents break off the arrangement. Yentl decides
to marry Hadass instead, and a loving relationship forms between Yentl and Hadass. Only the
audience/reader perceives the relationship Yentl has with Hadass and Avigdor to be homosexual until
Yentl reveals her identity. Hadass develops strong feelings for Yentl as Anshel, and Yentl reciprocates
those feelings. Yentl s self deception that allows her to fall in love with Hadass combined with Yentl s
conflicting relationship with Avigdor solidifies the identity crisis issue that must be solved in the

The Case Of Edward Bernays
Merriam Webster s dictionary defines ethics as, the discipline dealing with what is good and bad and
with moral duty and obligation (Merriam Webster, 2017). In the field of Public Relations, ethics is a
determining factor in reaching out and building relationships with audiences. Often times, people will
choose whether or not to place their trust in a campaign, business, or company based on how they
portray themselves ethically. However, there have been several instances where people have acted
unethically in the field of Public Relations and still became successful. In the case of Edward Bernays,
acting ethically was not a point of emphasis. In fact, Bernays unethical public relations tactics and use

During the 1920s, Bernays was hired by the American Tobacco Company to tap into the women s
market and get women to begin smoking cigarettes outside. According to Mostegel (2016), George W.
Hill, president of the American Tobacco Company had asked Bernays, How can we get women to
smoke on the street? They re smoking indoors. But, damn it, if they spend half the time outdoors and
we can get em to smoke outdoors, we ll damn near double our female market. Do something. Act! (p.
41). Although Bernays was already a well known public relations practitioner by this point in his
career, accomplishing that task would not be easy. The 1920s was a period where women would begin
to have as many rights as men, however, they still were not treated equally. In the nineteenth century,
smoking was considered unlady like and masculine. In the early twentieth century, women began to
smoke, but were faced with obstacles. It was still unacceptable for men and women to smoke in the
same place. And in 1922, the District of Columbia proposed a bill to ban the consumption of cigarettes
by women (Leal, Filho, Rocha, 1998, p.47). Essentially, getting women to smoke outside would not be
an easy task.
Bernays saw potential in the women s rights movement as a way to push his agendas. In his novel
Propaganda, he writes, If the suffrage campaign did nothing more, it showed the

Students With Disabilities Education Improvement Act
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the United States alone, about one in
every thirty three babies is born with a birth defect including special needs disorders ( Data Statistics
). Every child, no matter their race, gender, age or disability, has the ability to learn. The ways in
which children learn and their ability to retain knowledge varies considerably, especially when a child
struggles with special needs. The Federal special education law established in 1975 in the Education
for All Handicapped Children Act and then continued through a series of reauthorizations up through
2004 in what is now called the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) has
long held that students with disabilities, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While disabled students are learning the same curriculum as the regular based learners, they may
struggle and fall behind, as they may not be able to keep up with the work. This can hurt the disabled
child solely because their self confidence can drop and result in them feeling left out. Disabled
learners typically will require extra help and instruction. This can hurt the class as a whole because the
amount of time spent on one concept, can take up too much time and in the end affect the amount of
material covered within a given time period. Even though a child may be pulled out into a resource
room for extra help, they are still delaying the classroom pace which is ultimately a huge academic
disadvantage (Foust, Kathy). Tolerance may be taught in the inclusive classroom setting, but it does
not always have a positive outcome. Students with special needs may receive special privileges, where
as a regular learner may see it as unfair. A child may feel as though disabled students get away with a
lot more since they have a disability. This can lead to other students in the class acting out in hopes of
receiving special treatment as well. It can also lead to resentment and cause conflict in the traditional
classroom (Lawrence,

After placing their orders, Samsung would forward the customers desired products to their sales
headquarters. After necessary paper work has been done, the items would then be checked for
availability at specific distribution centres. In a case whereby the selected stock is unavailable in its
specific distribution centres, Samsung would re import the stocks from overseas factory to replenish
their stocks.
3. Order Picking and Assembly
As Samsung s distribution centre is separated into different zones, most of the items are on shelving
racks divided between different floors. In addition, Samsung has a horizontal carousel and pallet racks
for large items. However, the picking process only starts when the particular printer starts to print a
series of barcode labels. By scanning the barcode with a PDA, it informs the picker exactly where to
go. Upon reaching on its particular site, he scans the barcodes and ratify the number of items/parts

number of items. (Samsung Improves Quality through Compact and Reliable Scanners,2011, February

In 1942 America has recently joined WWII to fight against Germany and Japan after the attack on
Pearl Harbor. Many news outlets such as the New Yorker have provided information about the war but
what stands out from the others are there covers. The New Yorker use many covers reflecting both on
the war itself and on the impact of the conflict on American culture. From these two covers we can see
how the New Yorker has chosen the repetition of war to portray these covers from this important
cultural event, as well as which scenes were chosen for portrayal, can help to show how Americans at

Published in September 5, 1942 by the same artist Constantine Alajalov, we can see by the first view
of the cover on how the war has impacted the American industry. During the time of the war, many
able bodied men were either getting trained or in combat and with the high demand of labor for war
industries, many women for the first time have entered the work force performing jobs that usually
only men can handle. From this cover we see both men and women taking their lunch breaks, the
interesting part is how they re being represented. In one side we see the men all dispirited from their
work in plain darken clothes, while we see the women sitting in a circle all talking and laughing
dressed in bright colorful clothes. This possibly reflects the different attitudes toward their work of the
two groups. The women depicted here seems very pleased with the work they re doing and helping as
much as they can in the war, since before WWII they only been able to help in limited ways. On the
other hand, the men working here have likely been rejected by the army, who would prefer to be
fighting than working in a factory. Constantin Alajalov painted this picture possibly to show how it
reflects the different attitudes toward work which the American people had based upon their gender
and their situations, as well as some tensions in which the war has created. These two pictures have a
deeper meaning within it, possibly the artist wanted to show how young soldiers would viewed if they

Budget Definition
Not counting savings, I was able to come in under budget by $11.03. It was really difficult to create a
budget on such a low monthly income. The first thing I did was to locate an apartment. The upper
range I had in mind for my apartment was $400, and the cheapest one I could find was $399 per
month. It was also very difficult trying to determine whether I wanted to drive a car. Since the
expenses for car insurance and gas would be really high, I decided to not use a car. Fortunately, I got a
job as a cashier at a nearby Walmart. Thus, I could just walk to work. In addition, I found it difficult to
find a relatively inexpensive after school activity for the kids until I got off work. The budget for
groceries was also a tough amount to determine. Even if I use coupons, it would be difficult for my
family to stay within the budget every month for groceries. Overall, I budgeted the bare minimum to
my wants so that I could set aside money to my family s needs. In order to meet all the expenses and
live comfortably this family would need to be in the middle class.
I would completely disagree with them. Even if a poor person works 40 hours a week, it is still really
difficult to get by every month, especially with family members to support. Many people ... Show

My Idea of Adaptation from Written Work o Film
Critical Reflection At the beginning of the module my understanding of what adaptation meant was
that you would take a work and recreate it in a different form. Adaptation, according to the traditional
comparatitive model, is the process of adapting one original, culturally defined standard whole in
another medium, (Cardwell, 2002, p19). I believed the definition of adaptation to require a high level
of fidelity to the source text. My opinion before the module was based on the adaptations in popular
culture, mainly those of books being made into films. With Peter Jackson s Lord of the Rings films,
there was definitely an expectation from the audience that the films would be like they imagined the
books to be: that the director would be true to Tolkien s novels. There is a commercial pressure for the
director to stay as close to the original as possible, to ensure its success. Cardwell makes the
distinction between genetic and cultural adaptation, saying that where genetic adaptation is linear,
with each one being linked to the one before, whereas cultural adaptation always comes from the
original source (2002). Each subsequent adaptation is understood to hold a direct relationship with the
culturally established original, (pg14). As I started to consider the source text I was going to use,
several questions buzzed round my head. What did I want to adapt? What form would it take? How
would I make it work in my chosen form? How could I please the audience? The Streets

The Issue Of Marijuana Legalization
The matters of marijuana Marijuana is still illegal in the eyes of the federal government but the states
claim it is, in fact, legal for the states to openly practice recreational and medicinal usage of the drug.
Now with many people sick the only other option after numerous prescriptions that make the people

Marijuana first dated euphoric use dates back to 2737 BC. Its use spread from China to India, in the
writing of the Chinese emperor Shen Nung its focus was a medication for gout, rheumatism, malaria,
and absent mindedness. In India, Muslims used it on a daily basis, the Muslims were the ones who
introduced hashish. In 1545 the Spaniards brought marijuana to the New World, marijuana was
introduced in Jamestown in 1611 where it was a significant as tobacco was at the time and was grown
as a great source of fiber. Just after the Mexican Revolution America saw an influx of immigration
from Mexico into states like Texas and Louisiana. With them, Mexicans brought language, culture and
customs, a custom known as cannabis as a medicine and a relaxing agent. The Mexicans brought the
term marihuana which was a foreign term but the Americans were very familiar with the word
cannabis because it was present in the medicines at the time. The media, at the time, began to make a

Benefits Of Genetic Engineering
The field of genetic engineering is an incredibly growing one and it proves to be a topic of constant
controversy. Some believe it to be beneficial to humanity, while others argue that it poses a threat.
Several documents have been published, and experiments tested to support both sides of the spectrum,
but follow of the trend of supporting genetic engineering. While certain aspects put some moral codes
into question, genetic engineering is beneficial to humanity because will lead to a more understanding
and capable society, can be used as a route to incredible possibilities, and it provides people with
better opportunities. Many who attempt to take a stance on genetic engineering are unaware of what it
actually is, and therefore are unable to make a proper argument. There have been several instances in
which a debate has taken place over the topic, yet half of those who participated did not have a proper
understanding of it. In a study taken place to measure the general biomedical and genetic literacy in
the U.S and Europe, results showed that the US came in at the middle rank of 28th among the 34
countries studied (Source F). From this it can be concluded that many of those who attend these sort of
events are not entirely informed and if they were to be informed it would lead to an overall sense of
understanding. Therefore, genetic engineering is beneficial in the way that it will allow for people to
be able to have more capability. Genetics is a field where the

Analysis Of Ode To Nightingale

First starting from Ode to Nightingale which is a Keats ode influenced by Greek mythology, I found
that Nightingale is a symbol of beauty, immortality and freedom from the depressing and tiresome
world. In Greek and Roman myths, Nightingale refers to Philomela. Philomela in Greek mythology is
a figure symbol used in literary and artistry works. She is identified as the daughter of king of Athens.
According to Greek mythology she was raped and after she took back her revenge she transformed
into Nightingale.

nature. In this case, Autumn is a personification of human shape sometimes works as gleaner and
some other times as a reaper etc. Keats also provided some symbols of ancient Greek deities such as
Ceres , Demeter (goddess) and Pan (demi god of wilds).
I found Keats all poems full with the themes of beauty, art and nature which were the characteristics
loved by Ancient Greeks. In this ode, metaphors which personifies the beauty of a season are also used
such as mellow , rich and splendid in the shades of Autumn scattered throughout the poem which
dwells on the idea of perceiving the

Democratic Government, Search For Truth, And Autonomy
Theoretical Perspective
There are three arguments for free speech which is Democratic Government, Search for Truth, and
Autonomy. According to Utm.org The first philosophical justification of free speech is that free speech
is essential for the proper functioning of a democratic government. An environment of open debate
and dialogue will give lawmakers the opportunity to critically examine possible public policies of
every variety. Democracy involves a wide spectrum of opinions about what is best for society, and it is
impossible for law makers to act on them all (Utm.org). This can also be applied to college campuses.
In order to be a place of higher education the same rules apply. Free Speech is also essential for the
proper functioning of a college or university. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Utm.org Imagine a primitive village that for centuries has gotten its water by hauling it
in buckets from a stream a mile away. Someone then comes up with the idea of diverting the stream to
bring it closer to the village, but the community elders silence him since the implementation of his
idea would disrupt the village s longstanding tradition. The elders might even see the practical benefit
of diverting the stream, but feel that doing so would change the daily rituals of the community, and
possibly create discord among the villagers. We could imagine similar scenarios where leaders
suppress new ideas about agricultural production, medicine, or building construction, all of which
would hinder any advance in scientific knowledge (Utm.org). By refusing other individuals voice of
opinions blocks the truth from society. In this sense, free speech is a requirement in the search for

Holden Caulfield s The Catcher Of The Rye
It is evident that the protagonist, Holden Caulfield suffers from depression due to the death of his
younger brother, Allie in The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. Due to Allie s death, Holden s
actions elicit his own views of the world and the phonies around him. Holden has tunnel vision to
living a simple, happy life and isolates himself from those around him who understand the concept of
growing up. Salinger uses a hat, a museum, and a merry go round to illuminate Holden s emotion, the
notion of adulthood, and the reality of growing up. Sigmund Freud s psychoanalytic theory and the
studies of Ego, Superego, and Id are used to show the significance of Holden s behavior in The
Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger.
The unconventional hat that is in Holden s possession symbolizes his wish to hold onto the simplicity
of childhood and separate himself from the phonies that surround him. The hat also comforts Holden
in the aspect that it holds onto his brother s childhood that was lost due to his premature death. Holden
is terrified of growing up due to the fact that it leads to the phoniness of adulthood. It is justified
throughout the novel that Holden believes no one acts how they truly feel; and it is hard to trust and be
trusted. The hat offers Holden quite a lot of protection (213). However, he is not so fond of wearing
the hat because he doesn t want to stand out and draw unwanted attention to himself; causing

Sex Segregation in the Workplace Essay
Why are most brain surgeons and CEO s male? Why are most secretaries and nurses female? Why not
female surgeons and male nurses? These are simple and frequent questions that can be answered by
most Sociologist and Theorists. Sociologists and Theorists equate this type of job inequality
phenomenon with occupational sex segregation. Sex segregation in the workplace is one of the most
visible signs of inequality in the labor market. In almost every work setting, it is rare to see men and
women working at the same job. When they do, they usually perform different tasks, with unequal
levels of responsibility and authority. Even when job tasks are virtually identical, it is not uncommon
to find men and women allocated to distinct job ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Employers try to maximize profits by maximizing productivity and minimizing costs to the extent
possible, but because of competition and efficient labor markets, employers pay workers their
marginal product. So, this theory explains why more males than females are surgeons; because they
seem to have better opportunities for education and they tend to lack certain obligations that females
have. Whereas many women find it difficult to find the time to obtain this education because of their
certain obligations life hands them, for example taking care of a family and raising children.
When explaining occupational sex segregation by sex, researchers usually distinguish labor supply
and labor demand factors. Factors related to labor supply generally focus on why women prefer
certain types of occupation for example, women may prefer those with flexible hours in order to allow
time for child care, and may also prefer occupations which are relatively easy to interrupt for a period
of time to bear or rear children. Explanations related to labor demand focus on why employers
generally prefer to hire women or men for particular occupations and why women and men have
different opportunities for promotion and career development within firms.
Institutional and labor market segmentation theories are another explanation for why

Willamete Valley Essay
Agriculture did not occur in the Pacific Northwest because much of its environment was flanked east
and west by the coniferous forests of the Cascades and Coast Range (Aikens 183). These coniferous
forests allowed for vast water system that eventually joined the Willamette River on its course
northward to the Columbia below (Aikens 183); and resulted in a gallery forests of deciduous and
evergreen trees followed the watercourse, and much of the valley floor was in open grassland with
scattered oak groves (Boyd 67). The coniferous forests and evergreen grasslands for the Pacific

The root harvest served as a gathering technique that was facilitated by the abundances of camas lilies,
or more specifically their bulbs, that were a key staple to the people of the Willamette Valley. Using
simple digging sticks, they would dig out a large quantity of these bulbs, collect them to gather, and
bury them in what is known as a camas oven. After letting these slowly bake in the earth, they would
dig them up and pound them into cakes (Jew 4). The vast grasslands and evergreen fields of the
Willamette Valley also provided the peoples of the Oregon coast with edible seeds, bulbs, and acorns
in great quantity (Aikens 188). These edible seeds, bulbs, and acorns were made available by the
bottomland plant communities along the valley s streams, that contained other species which also
produced edible or otherwise usable parts (Aikens 188). The vast majority of these edible or otherwise
usable parts was facilitated by the presence of native Oregon coast forest trees such as the hazelnut,
Oregon grape, salmonberry, elderberry, and ninebark (Aikens 188); and their abundance promoted the

Historical Development of Security Forces and Policy...
Historical Development of Security Forces: The historical development of security forces and policy
making in crime and justice from civilization period to the establishment of contemporary nation
states and governments mainly involves the evolution of law and legal structures. Some of the various
codes of law and justice that have been promulgated at different periods of history include: The Code
of Hammurabi: This is the earliest code of written and public laws that was developed in Babylonia
approximately 2,000 years before Christ. While this ancient legal code was promulgated by Emperor
Hammurabi, it was popularly accepted as a law of divine origin that helped reinforce its legitimacy.
Since it dealt with various aspects, the Code of Hammurabi established the idea of restorative and
retributive justice (Shahidullah, 2008, p. 3). Draco s Law: This code of law was originally written by
an Athenian legislator as a strict legal code for Greece around 621 B.C. Draco s law stated that it was
the state s responsibility to punish offenders instead of private citizens as many people were sentenced
to death for crimes. Law of the Twelve Tables: The introduction of the Twelve Tables around 450 B.C.
was the most significant ancient legal code of the Roman Law. The development of this law involved
10 Roman men who had total control in writing laws to govern Roman citizens (Limbaugh, 2010).

The Importance Of The Dreyfus Affair
Throughout history, journalism has impacted in both the history and the politics of a country. In 1894,
a man named Alfred Dreyfus, who was a Jewish military officer in the French army, was used as a
scapegoat by being wrongfully accused of sharing French military defense secrets to Germany. Alfred
Dreyfus is importance lies in the strong antisemitism movement in France that erupted after (Fischel
119). The Affair began in September 1894 when The French Army Intelligence Bureau intercepted a
letter supposedly written by Alfred Dreyfus. Alfred Dreyfus was court martialed for treason and

Like many innocent people, the letters from Alfred are filled with the questions on the verdict and
claims of innocence. He used these questions once sentenced to restore his honor by acquittal. These
positive thoughts of acquittal prevented his suicide on Devil s Island (Dreyfus 138). Although Alfred
Dreyfus was not directly advocating for political, economic, cultural, social, or military change, his
attempts to advocate for his innocence led to a political and cultural divide in France. The Dreyfus
Affair was a main cause of the tremendous unrest in France. It unleased a strong anti Semitism
movement in France because of a perceived failure of the justice system (Fischel 119). It deeply
divided France in politics, religion, and national identity. The acquittal of Alfred Dreyfus gave justice
to him and marked a turning point in history, in which it was a magnificent step forward in an era of
progress for ideas of liberty, of justice, and of social solidarity (Dreyfus 241).
Although Alfred Dreyfus was not directly advocating for political, economic, cultural, social, or
military change, the primary source, an open letter by Emile Zola J accuse advocated for these things.
J accuse was published in defense of Alfred Dreyfus in L Aurore, a popular French newspaper. The

Gautama Buddha and Siddhartha
Throughout one s entire existence he/she goes through countless trials to discover our true Self or
some sort of spiritual enlightenment. Along the way one may encounter many teachers that can guide
us along several different paths while telling us what they think is right or wrong. They offer us
guidance and assistance, but still yet one makes his or her own decisions. Clearly portrayed in the
German novella Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse, we can easily point out the importance of teachers in
ones life and how they can simply guide us and lead us to finding our Self. Throughout the text it is
obvious that Siddhartha had many guides such as the Samanas, Gotama, and Kamala that ultimately
led to the discovery of his enlightenment. Undoubtedly, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As soon as the Samanas cease their spiritual practices, the real world comes rushing back, and
whatever enlightenment has been achieved dies away. Since Siddharatha is searching for a permanent
answer, he cannot follow the Samanas. Thus, this leads to his next spiritual guide, Gotama. In addition
to Siddharthas many teachers, he meets an enlightened fellow named Gotama. Gotama seems to
radiate pure enlightenment. His teachings include Buddhism s Eightfold Path, the Fourfold Way, and
other aspects of Buddhism, as well as many practices similar to those of the Samanas. Siddhartha soon
dedicates himself to these teachings. As seen in the text, Gotama talked about suffering, the origin of
suffering, the way to release from suffering. Life was pain, the world was full of suffering, but the
page to release from suffering had been found. There was salvation for those who went the way of the
Buddha. (page 29) Siddhartha indeed believed that Gotama held the key that unlocked his own
personal enlightenment because Gotama in turn was enlightened himself. Another example on how
Gotama led Siddhartha to further advance the discovery of himself was when Siddhartha unexpectedly
meets Gotama in the grove and he speaks to him about his doctrine, praising his victory in finding the
unbroken chain of being, of cause and effect. As quoted in the text, Everything is completely clear and
proved. You show the world as a complete, unbroken chain, an eternal chain, linked

Jonathan Pitts article on: Online Dating Advantages, online dating is not only becoming a normal part
of the dating scheme, its also very convenient. He explains it in with one particular scenario: After all
you couldn t go into a nightclub or a bar, ask all the people to line up and then split them into several

Using social media and dating websites for relationships very often leads to the sending of intimate

1. Increased business globalization, emergence of new economic hubs like BRIC countries (Brazil,
Russia, India and China) as well as more intense competition among organizations at the domestic and
international level alike over the past two decades, have necessitated the need for studies in the
comparative Human Resource Management (HRM) (Budhwar amp; Sparrow, 2002a). As a result, a
growing number of conceptual (Aycan, 2005; Edwards amp; Kuruvilla, 2005) and empirical studies

Hall describes context as the information that surrounds an event. In high context societies, the
situation, the external environment and non verbal cues are crucial in the communication process.
However, this approach fits much better with a generic concept of culture, in the sense of a broad
cultural community such as Arabs, Latins or Chinese, than with the constrained boundaries of a nation
state, where individual and organizational diversity allows for a pluralistic coexistence of both low
and high context.
9. The work of Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck (1961) offers another useful framework to understand
cultural differences. Viewing culture as a set of assumptions and deep level values regarding
relationships among humans and between humans and their environments, Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck
proposed four basic value orientations, which can be further divided into sub dimensions to capture
the complex cultural variations across societies. The major orientations in their model are human
nature (evil, mixed, good), man nature relationship (subjugation, harmony, dominant), social relation
with people (hierarchical, collateral, individual), human activity (being, becoming, doing), and time
sense (past, present, future). The cultural orientation framework has been adopted by researchers to
explain variations of HRM practices across countries (e.g., Aycan et al., 2007; Nyambegera et al.,

The New York Times By Steven Pearlstein
In pondering the question of inequality in the United States rising or falling it must first be asked how
would it be decided or what is considered equality? However, before answering these questions, I will
address two articles that present a difference in opinion on the subject of the middle class surviving or
dying out. The first article I will address was in The New York Times, written by Steven Pearlstein. It
was a bit difficult to find strong arguments in this article supporting his belief of the middle class
surviving. However, there are a few things mentioned in the article that did make a good point.
Pearlstein (2007) wrote, $44,500 is reported the median household income with taking in the varying

This economy has and is undoubtedly concerned in what they do and do not have, compared to the

Symbolism through Theme Of Jane Eyre and Wide Sargasso Sea To produce a mighty book, you must
choose a mighty theme. No great and enduring volume can ever be written on the flea, though many
there be that have tried it, stated Herman Melville. As implied, without theme, no novel can be

Charlotte Brontë that takes the reader through the experiences of Jane Eyre, from childhood to

In some cases, it is a symbol used in some cases for rebirth or new life. Jane is often compared to fire
while Antoinette is intrigued by fire. Jane is referred to as a ridge of lighted health, alive, glancing,
devouring (Wide Sargasso Sea, Chapter 4). Also, in Wide Sargasso Sea, Rochester loves the immense
fireflies as he also loves the candles that Antoinette repeatedly puts out around the house. This theme
of fire is obvious in two particular cases. One of these cases is when Coulibri is burned and Anette
falls into insanity, and the other being when Bertha burns Thornfield down, ultimately killing herself
and seriously injuring Rochester (Symbolism in Wide Sargasso Sea). In addition, Rochester, in Wide
Sargasso Sea, describes the West Indies as fiery . This shows his dislike of the land he is not familiar
with until it increases and reaches the point when he decides to shoot himself. This scene relates to the
scene in Jane Eyre when Jane hears Rochester s voice as she walks through the woods. Fire relates
Jane and Antoinette in different ways. Fire additionally describes Jane s love for Rochester, while on
the other hand; it describes Antoinette s pain and fear, whereas it also links Jane and Bertha. The fire
that Jane possesses is her love for Rochester as she describes it as fiery iron grasped my vitals, and

Most Common Tools Present During The Lower Palaeolithic...
Oldowan and Acheulean stone tools were the most common tools present during the Lower
Palaeolithic period. These tools were the earliest evidence of cultural behaviour that is present among
us Homo sapiens now. The Oldowan and Acheulean artefacts is an important breakthrough in early
human prehistory. For the past two and a half million years, the ability to make and use tools is a skill
that has allowed humankind to thrive by making increasingly more efficient use of the resources in the
environment. For the majority of this time, two of the most important tools have been the Oldowan
chopper and the Acheulean handaxe. In this essay I will be talking about Oldowan tools, Acheulean
tools, and then I will compare the Oldowan tools to the Acheulean tools and see what the differences
and similarities there are between these two stone tool industries. Hence, I will be mentioning about
the early Homo behavioural adaptations such as diet, ranging patterns, and the possible development
of social behaviour that were present during the era of these stone tools.
Oldowan stone tools are the world s oldest stone tool industry; dating back to 2.5 million years ago.
The Oldowan stone tool industry was used by Homo habilis. The Oldowan stone tool industry was
first found by Louis Leakey and Mary Leakey at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, at the site Gona in

U.s. Presidential Election Elections Essay
In due course of the most recent decade, there has been a significant surge in American independent
voters. It is of verifiable significance to put into thought the effects of these voters, especially, since
the United States (U.S.) currently undergone its eagerly awaited 2016 Presidential General Election. It
is with relevance to presidential elections that we have seen a political surge on American independent
voters and thus having political candidates attempt to sway their view, we have seen fundamental
compelling percentages on these election outcomes.
This case study crafts the breakdown of potential variables that have prompted to the sharp ascent in
American independent voters in previous political history, and the voting behavior to authentic
elements adding to Independent voters decisions. Specifically, to what extent do factors shape the
voting behavior on the increasing rise of the American Independent voter choice and voter turnout in
the 2016 United States Presidential Election? By extension, how do independents differ in part from
the two major partisan ties of the Democratic and Republican parties?
As per the United States voting framework, an independent voter is a non fanatic electorate who is not
subsidiary with a specific political gathering. Independents can either be immaculate or inclining.
Inclining Independents tend to vote for the gathering they incline more towards along these lines they
are mostly divided in that sense. Immaculate

An Encouragement for Small Businesses
Encouragement of Small Business
Introduction
The Congress has the authority to impose requirements for the federal procurement policies. Through
the acquisition process, the government procures goods and services from diverse players. The process
consists of three phases that are, acquisition planning and need recognition, contract formation and
contract administration. Federal acquisition regulation (FAR) regulates the activities of the
government in the procurement process. The system does not regulate the activities of the private
sectors, but it affects the operation of private firms incorporated into the federal government by way of
solicitation and reference of contracts. Congress, on the other hand, imposes requirements on private
sectors whereby, agencies of the government obtain goods and services from private individuals or
sectors. One of these authorities comes to be when congress exercises its mandate by promoting
subcontracting and contracting with small business entities (Columba, Gambacorta Mistrulli, 2010).
Declaration of these measures by congress ensures that small business entity gets a chance to contract
with government agencies. Congress should aid, assist, protect, and counsel small business entities to
ensure their survival in the market. Congress mandate ensure that there is fair competition in the
procurement market within agencies and in ensuring that there is fair proportion set aside for small
enterprises. Small entities need not only be

Stonewall Riots And The Gay Rights Movement
In 2016 President Obama named the Stonewall Inn as the first National monument to LGBTQIA
(Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Questioning, Asexual, Intersex) rights. In history classes, we learned
that movements can lead to progression to break down and change constitutional law, and the mindset
of society. We hear about the civil rights movement, women s rights and even the labor movement; but
seldom do we hear about the gay rights movement. Many people say that the LGBTQIA community
has been fighting since 1912 or WWII, but all can agree that the Stonewall riots started gay liberation
and changed the LGBTQ community forever.
At 1:20 A.M. on a Saturday, June 28, 1969, police raided a gay bar called the Stonewall Inn, in

Like a lot of bars in the area, the Stonewall Inn was operated without a liquor license and was a
seducement to the gay community for the latest drugs, and its remote entry. It also catered to lesbians,
but the bar predominantly consisted of younger gay males, transgender and drag queens. Due to the
allure of Stonewall Inn; Inspector Pine and Detective Smythe of the New York City Police department,
made it their mission to shut it down like they did several other mafia run gay bars in Greenwich. Pine
and Smythe devised a plan to gain access to the bar and arrest as many people as possible. Pine did not
want any tip offs for the raid, so he planned accordingly; Pine thought it would be smart to draft a few
men from anti gay support groups and two undercover policewomen from a neighboring precinct.
They would enter acting as gay men and women, start mingling with bar patrons and then leave the
bar and regroup with Pine and Smythe and begin the raid. The raid began at 1:20 in the morning on
June 28, 1969. Pine pounded on the entrance and said, Police! We re taking the place! Anthony Vera
the young doorman with other Stonewall security had no choice but to let them

Benefits of the Placebo Effect
What if there was a new drug that s making you high, but is just a sugar pill? What if you can get
drunk with non alcoholic drinks? What if there was a pill that can cure all your physical and emotional
problems? This is known as the placebo effect. The placebo effect is a phenomenon in which some
people experience a type of benefit after the use of a placebo. A placebo is any substance with no
known medical effects; such as sterile water, saline solution, or a sugar pill. (About.com Psychology)
Although it doesn t have known effects, people exposed to the placebo effect often gets the effect on
what it s supposed to do.
A placebo is a substance or other kind of treatment that looks like a regular treatment or medicine, but
it is really not. It is actually a treatment or substance that is inactive; this means that it is not a real
medicine. The person who is getting a placebo does not know that the treatment is not real. Sometimes
the placebo is in the form of a sugar pill, but a placebo can also be an injection, a liquid, a procedure,
or any other type of therapy that doesn t directly affect the illness being treated. Even though placebos
do not act directly on the disease, it affects about 30% of people who experienced it.(Tulsa Brain
Tumor Clinic.) People taking placebos have experienced reduced pain, healed ulcers, eased nausea,
and many other illnesses.(ScienceDaily.) As many people suggest, the placebo is actually an
expectancy effect; when people already know what

  • 2. The Negative Effects Of Nuclear Weapons In a split second, a single atomic bomb can wipe out and level an entire city. For what purpose do nuclear weapons serve other than to kill and destroy? Therefore, nuclear weapons should not be produced, much less used, anywhere on Earth. They are incredibly dangerous and devastating to human life, cause social tension between countries during times of war, and leave toxic radiation in the environment that fatally affects nearby life for decades after. Nuclear weapons harness nuclear reactions to generate their power. There are two types: fission/atom bombs, which use nuclear fission, or thermonuclear/hydrogen bombs. Which use nuclear fusion (Cochran Norris 1). Nuclear weapons are classified as weapons of mass destruction and are the most dangerous weapons ever created. As of now, there are about 9,495 known, unretired nuclear weapons; 4,300 in Russia, 4,000 in the US, 60 in North Korea, etc. (Gould 7). In 1970, the Treaty on the Non Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which was created to limits the increase of nuclear weapons, went into effect and has been signed by the US, Russia, the UK, etc. (Nuclear Threat Initiative 1 3). During World War II, on the 6th and 9th of August, 1945, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima, Japan and Nagasaki, Japan. Immediately, 90% of the cities were demolished and more than 150,000 people were instantly killed, most of which were civilians (AtomicBombMuseum.org 2 3). Things that happened during our parents and grandparents age have caused a great concern for our ozone, our air, and our environment. You constantly hear about the many sources of pollution, but we hardly ever hear about the solutions. In this paper I will present one possible solution to the air pollution problem that has been caused by too many automobile emissions being released into the air. This possible solution deals with switching from diesel gas, to fuel trucks and bus fleets, to natural gas. I will discuss how this switch would assist in the reduction of air pollution and in this way help the environment. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 2. Safe Transportation Fuel: · One reason it is safer to transport is that natural gas will not spill to the ground and create pools of explosive gasoline. Natural gas will flow into the air and disappear into the atmosphere. · Another safer transportation factor would have to be that natural gas will not burn at temperatures less than 1,200 degrees. Gasoline on the other hand will ignite at a mere 600 degrees. According to a survey conducted by the American Gas Association, this will help in reducing deaths caused by automobiles catching on fire during an auto accident. 3. Safety Advantages: · Natural gas is not toxic and cannot be ingested. · Natural gas is not a carcinogenic substance. · Natural gas is not corrosive. All of the above mentioned factors make it seem apparent that natural gas is the best option at this point in time. But are there any known disadvantages of natural gas? The only disadvantage that I was able to locate would be the start up costs. It will be much more expensive in the beginning to use natural gas. The cost is not because the gas is more expensive, it is because there will have to be modifications made to gas stations, bus depot fueling stations, and of course, modifications to our automobiles. A typical natural gas bus would cost between $30,000 and $50,000 more than a diesel fueled bus. This means that instead of spending approximately $270,000 per ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Canadian Identity And Culture Essay Canadian identity and history is grounded in the culture and the traditions of the Aboriginal peoples. Popularly known as being the first inhabitants of Canada, Aboriginals strive to enrich the country s cultural mosaic through their existence and thus are an integral part of this nation. Although Aboriginals are deemed as an important part of the Canadian social fabric today, history (past and present) documents a contrasting image to this ideology where it is coloured by the economic, social, and physical hardships of Aboriginal societies in Canada. Scarred by the social and racial injustices of the past, Aboriginal education is a major continuing issue with regards to minority education in Canada. According to J. P. White and Dan Beavon (2009), Aboriginal educational attainment lags significantly behind the Canadian population (p. 3). Between 1981 and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In effort to improve these education attainment rates as well as to improve the quality of learning amoung Aboriginal peoples, the implementation of indigenous learning methods such as storytelling becomes an effective starting point. In particular, storytelling is seen as a tool used to preserve Aboriginal history and culture. In support, McKeough et al. (2008), affirms this notion as well: It is through the telling of stories and legends that First Nations people preserve what is most important to them language, traditions, culture, and identity. Stories are used to provide a sociocultural and historical account of the community knowledge from elders to youth, ensuring its survival with new generations (p. 150). Sonnet 130, written by William Shakespeare, totally goes against the typical sonnets of the time. Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 was written in the early 1600s. Though it was written in this time, it was not like the rest of the sonnets. Most of the sonnets at this time were modeled after Petrarch s famous sonnet sequence. He idolized and idealized his mistress, named Laura. In his sonnets, he praises her beauty, her worth, and her perfection using metaphors based on natural beauties. In the past, men set a high value on women s hair; it was a sign of femininity and beauty. Moving to the second quatrain which states, I have seen roses demasked, red and white, / But no such roses see I in her cheeks;/ And in some perfumes is there more delight/ Than in the breath from my mistress reeks. First, the reader starts with an explicit I , which means he is only talking for himself and his mistress. In lines five and six, the speaker does not see the red and white roses in her cheeks. Both colors were already used, which means that neither the noble white or passionate red, are found in her. Roses are also a sign of love and passion. The smell of the mistress is described in lines seven and eight. The idea that reek and stink are the same thing did not develop until a century later. The mistress breath was not as pleasant as some perfumes. Perfume was an expensive and worthy object, but can be a pleasant smell in nature too. Yentl The Yeshiva Boy Essay An adaptation of Isaac Singer s short story Yentl: The Yeshiva Boy, Yentl discusses the issue if gender stereotyping imposed as religious and societal constructs as well as same sex relationships. A transgender hero by contemporary standards, Yentl fights against the confines of her existence as a Jewish female in a patriarchal society. Yentl possesses masculine qualities, proven through her ability to convincingly disguise herself as a man, evident during the prologue when she enters the play as her male persona Anshel. From the opening scene the audience quickly learns that Yentl finds her gender to be a curse because of the limitations it imposes upon her. Even her father, a leading religious figure, seems to acknowledge that Yentl behaves more like a man than a woman stating that Even Heaven makes mistakes! when answering while Yentl was born a woman (I, i, 10). In the field of Public Relations, ethics is a determining factor in reaching out and building relationships with audiences. Often times, people will choose whether or not to place their trust in a campaign, business, or company based on how they portray themselves ethically. However, there have been several instances where people have acted unethically in the field of Public Relations and still became successful. According to Mostegel (2016), George W. Hill, president of the American Tobacco Company had asked Bernays, How can we get women to smoke on the street? They re smoking indoors. But, damn it, if they spend half the time outdoors and we can get em to smoke outdoors, we ll damn near double our female market. Do something. Act! (p. 41). Although Bernays was already a well known public relations practitioner by this point in his career, accomplishing that task would not be easy. The 1920s was a period where women would begin to have as many rights as men, however, they still were not treated equally. In the nineteenth century, smoking was considered unlady like and masculine. In the early twentieth century, women began to smoke, but were faced with obstacles. It was still unacceptable for men and women to smoke in the same place. And in 1922, the District of Columbia proposed a bill to ban the consumption of cigarettes by women (Leal, Filho, Rocha, 1998, p.47). Every child, no matter their race, gender, age or disability, has the ability to learn. The ways in which children learn and their ability to retain knowledge varies considerably, especially when a child struggles with special needs. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While disabled students are learning the same curriculum as the regular based learners, they may struggle and fall behind, as they may not be able to keep up with the work. This can hurt the disabled child solely because their self confidence can drop and result in them feeling left out. Disabled learners typically will require extra help and instruction. This can hurt the class as a whole because the amount of time spent on one concept, can take up too much time and in the end affect the amount of material covered within a given time period. Even though a child may be pulled out into a resource room for extra help, they are still delaying the classroom pace which is ultimately a huge academic disadvantage (Foust, Kathy). Tolerance may be taught in the inclusive classroom setting, but it does not always have a positive outcome. Students with special needs may receive special privileges, where as a regular learner may see it as unfair. A child may feel as though disabled students get away with a lot more since they have a disability. This can lead to other students in the class acting out in hopes of receiving special treatment as well. It can also lead to resentment and cause conflict in the traditional classroom (Lawrence, ... During the time of the war, many able bodied men were either getting trained or in combat and with the high demand of labor for war industries, many women for the first time have entered the work force performing jobs that usually only men can handle. From this cover we see both men and women taking their lunch breaks, the interesting part is how they re being represented. In one side we see the men all dispirited from their work in plain darken clothes, while we see the women sitting in a circle all talking and laughing dressed in bright colorful clothes. This possibly reflects the different attitudes toward their work of the two groups. The women depicted here seems very pleased with the work they re doing and helping as much as they can in the war, since before WWII they only been able to help in limited ways. The first thing I did was to locate an apartment. The upper range I had in mind for my apartment was $400, and the cheapest one I could find was $399 per month. It was also very difficult trying to determine whether I wanted to drive a car. Since the expenses for car insurance and gas would be really high, I decided to not use a car. Fortunately, I got a job as a cashier at a nearby Walmart. Thus, I could just walk to work. In addition, I found it difficult to find a relatively inexpensive after school activity for the kids until I got off work. The budget for groceries was also a tough amount to determine. • 13. My Idea of Adaptation from Written Work o Film Critical Reflection At the beginning of the module my understanding of what adaptation meant was that you would take a work and recreate it in a different form. Adaptation, according to the traditional comparatitive model, is the process of adapting one original, culturally defined standard whole in another medium, (Cardwell, 2002, p19). I believed the definition of adaptation to require a high level of fidelity to the source text. My opinion before the module was based on the adaptations in popular culture, mainly those of books being made into films. With Peter Jackson s Lord of the Rings films, there was definitely an expectation from the audience that the films would be like they imagined the books to be: that the director would be true to Tolkien s novels. There is a commercial pressure for the director to stay as close to the original as possible, to ensure its success. Cardwell makes the distinction between genetic and cultural adaptation, saying that where genetic adaptation is linear, with each one being linked to the one before, whereas cultural adaptation always comes from the original source (2002). Each subsequent adaptation is understood to hold a direct relationship with the culturally established original, (pg14). As I started to consider the source text I was going to use, several questions buzzed round my head. What did I want to adapt? What form would it take? How would I make it work in my chosen form? How could I please the audience? The Streets ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Holden has tunnel vision to living a simple, happy life and isolates himself from those around him who understand the concept of growing up. Salinger uses a hat, a museum, and a merry go round to illuminate Holden s emotion, the notion of adulthood, and the reality of growing up. Sigmund Freud s psychoanalytic theory and the studies of Ego, Superego, and Id are used to show the significance of Holden s behavior in The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. Historical Development of Security Forces: The historical development of security forces and policy making in crime and justice from civilization period to the establishment of contemporary nation states and governments mainly involves the evolution of law and legal structures. Some of the various codes of law and justice that have been promulgated at different periods of history include: The Code of Hammurabi: This is the earliest code of written and public laws that was developed in Babylonia approximately 2,000 years before Christ. While this ancient legal code was promulgated by Emperor Hammurabi, it was popularly accepted as a law of divine origin that helped reinforce its legitimacy. Since it dealt with various aspects, the Code of Hammurabi established the idea of restorative and retributive justice (Shahidullah, 2008, p. 3). Draco s Law: This code of law was originally written by an Athenian legislator as a strict legal code for Greece around 621 B.C. Draco s law stated that it was the state s responsibility to punish offenders instead of private citizens as many people were sentenced to death for crimes. Law of the Twelve Tables: The introduction of the Twelve Tables around 450 B.C. was the most significant ancient legal code of the Roman Law. The development of this law involved 10 Roman men who had total control in writing laws to govern Roman citizens (Limbaugh, 2010). The work of Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck (1961) offers another useful framework to understand cultural differences. Viewing culture as a set of assumptions and deep level values regarding relationships among humans and between humans and their environments, Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck proposed four basic value orientations, which can be further divided into sub dimensions to capture the complex cultural variations across societies. The major orientations in their model are human nature (evil, mixed, good), man nature relationship (subjugation, harmony, dominant), social relation with people (hierarchical, collateral, individual), human activity (being, becoming, doing), and time sense (past, present, future).
