This document summarizes MiddleVR, a virtual reality company that provides a generic VR plugin called MiddleVR. MiddleVR can manage input devices, displays, and interactions to create and deploy VR experiences across a variety of hardware and software. It supports many VR devices and displays and allows building VR applications in Unity, Unreal Engine, or other engines using C++, C#, Python, or Lua wrappers.
These slides use ideas from my class to develop a business model for Oculus Rift’s headset. This headset creates the perception among users that they are in a different reality as they play video games. It has much higher resolution and faster response time than do previous headsets. Although Oculus hopes to develop its own console, these slides recommend that Oculus partner with a console maker such as Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo in order to reduce development cost and gain access to existing users and game software. Hopefully it can receive a portion of hardware and game software revenues as its headset enables console makers to increase their market share and charge more for game software.

Human-centered interaction design focuses on the human side of communication between user and machine: the interface from the user’s perspective. Many causes of bad VR are centered on a lack of understanding of human perception, intuitive interaction, design principles, and real users. Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
