How Is Offred And The Commander
Offred and the Commander The Commander represents the Government and the System in the novel.
The most effective way in which the novel brought out gender bias was Offred s narration of how the
Gilead society claims her body as property of the Government s. She clearly states that she is part of a
collectively owned resource, We are containers, it s only the insides of our bodies that are important.
The outside can become hard and wrinkled for all they care, like the shell of a nut. (Atwood 150).
Handmaids are no more than vessels, no more than passageways that facilitate the existence of a baby
and Offred s empty womb is being watched by the government. It is the central object which is more
real than her. Yet Offred realized the powerlessness of the Commander as a part of the system. He
does not have the ability He wouldn t be able to intervene, to save me; the transgressions of women in
the household, whether Martha or Handmaid, are supposed to be under the jurisdiction of the Wives
alone. (Atwood 162) This also allows the readers a glimpse into the power and infiltration of Mayday
against the Eyes . The readers are able to see the powerlessness and the inefficiency of the State
though the Commander s impotence and restriction placed on him by the State itself. Offred s hope

A flash of bared teeth, what in the hell does he think he s doing? Nobody else has seen him. I hope.
Was he invading? Was he in my room? (Atwood 49) This coercive power could be a result of Offred s
initial rejection to the Commander s wishes which could result in disaster for her. Even though the
Commander does not maintain a constant relationship with his own wife, Serena Joy considers him
the only thing she has. She exercises a certain power over

The Indian student community in England was further inspired by the workings of parliamentary
democracy and Britishers political parties.
In 1919, the Rowlatt Act gave extensive powers to the British government and police, and allowed
indefinite arrest and detention of individuals, warrant less searches and seizures, restrictions on public
gatherings, and intensive censorship of media and publications. The public opposition to this act
eventually led to mass campaigns of non violent civil disobedience throughout the country demanding
guaranteed civil freedoms, and limitations on government power. Indians, who were seeking

The Paternalistic Doctor Patient Relationship
It is difficult to imagine a time when exploitation of patients was a normal practice. It is worse that
such a time was not all that long ago. While reading the story of Henrietta Lacks, I consistently had to
remind myself that times were different. Doctors did not necessarily intend to harm their patients in
any way, however it is impossible not to feel pity for Henrietta, her family, and any others who were
mistreated simply due to the ignorance of the times. One of the noticeable recurrent themes of this
story was the paternalistic doctor patient relationship. There were multiple occasions in which Day
mentioned how he simply trusted the doctors to do what was right. He and Henrietta assumed doctors
understood their patients needs better than the patients themselves, and therefore never asked
questions. My understanding is that this was a common mentality at the time. I imagine this mentality
was especially prominent among less fortunate classes of people who did not have the means to
understand what their doctors were telling them. In cases in which harm befell patients, the doctor
patient relationship was likely a primary culprit. Doctors had a paternalistic attitude, and therefore did
not excel at communicating with their patients, specifically at a level that was appropriate to the given
situation. Adding to the problem, patients did not ask questions, simply because they did not know
they had the option to do so. The opportunity to observe a classic

Difference Between Christianity And Ancient Egyptian Religion
There are many arguments of how Christianity is an evolve religion from ancient Egypt religion.
Especially with the talk between Horus and Jesus, and isis and mary. Christianity both have many
similarities also they have a lot of differences. They both have a god but for ancient Egypt its gods,
they both have a god that has a son, both Christianity and ancient Egypt religion has practices like any
other religion.
Christianity and ancient Egyptian religion have supreme being that they look up too, for Christianity
being God and ancient religion has many gods and the main ones that are known are Osiris, Horus,
and Iris. In both religions Christianity and ancient Egyptian religion they both have gods battling some
type of evil., while god will be battling the devil and Ra would be fighting chaos to keep balance in
the world and not let evil consume the earth. Like the sun god Ra for ancient Egyptian religion and

In ancient Egyptian religion they have over two thousand gods, and in Christianity, there is one god.
Another difference between Christianity gods and African religion gods is that Christians god has one
purpose while in ancient Egyptian each god has its own purpose and its own story like the Egyptian
god Thoth the god of knowledge.
Even though mary is not a god she was a virgin who gave birth to Jesus the son of god, while the same
thing happened to Horus and his mother Isis. In both Christianity and ancient Egyptian religion, both
sons of gods died and were resurrected. Jesus resurrecting for the Christians and hours resurrecting
ancient Egyptian religion. The name king of kings is mainly established to Jesus but Osiris shares the
same name king of kings also the of the lord of lords. Like Jesus being the medium of Christianity

Character Analysis On Hatchet
An important event in Hatchet was when Brian is getting the survival pack from the downed plane.
Since Brian has changed (physically and emotionally) throughout the days he has been there. Usually,
he will think of negative things and cry about all of them. Brian is starting to think about the plane and
the dead pilot again, but this time it was different. He was there for about 50 days or so, but he thought
about it all day. The survival pack, he was thinking of until the next morning. For the steps are
important because they show how Brian is fearless and strong to make a plan to get the survival pack
out of the plane. Brian s experience with getting the survival pack out of the plane is one reason why

Also in Hatchet, Brian has to figure out how to get to the crashed plane, then get on the plane to find

be, sometimes things happen that precipitate you into a crisis when you least expect it and you d better

Sydney Carton
Charles Dickens book clearly reveals the idea of resurrection through the character of Sydney Carton.
Although, in the 1980 version of A Tale of Two Cities directed by Jim Goddard, the same actor, Chris
Sarandon plays the role of both Sydney Carton and Charles Darnay. Through having such change
being made, it severely shifts the theme of the novel. For starters, the author is trying to reveal the idea
of resurrection but does so by the character of Sydney Carton and when he decides to give his own life
for that of Charles. Thus, when both characters are the same actors in the film, it also creates new
ideas of who Sydney really seeks to be, not only himself but Charles as well. Nevertheless, the whole
idea of resurrection is questioned due ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the novel, Sydney s character is portrayed as cruel and a man who has no purpose in life and
dishonorable among the community. In contrast, Charles is classy, and handsome. However, as Chris
plays both characters, it raises questions on who they really, and if after all they seek to be different.
As a result of the theme of resurrection shifted from the novel to the movie, it is relevant to state that
now these characters have slightly diverse significance and their standpoint is most definitely
changed. Due to the fact that both Charles and Sydney have been portrayed by the same person, it
reveals that after all they simply do not seek to be very much diverse. As a matter of fact, we see the
mischievous side of Charles when he fails to announce that he is related to the Marquis, he is part of
the Marqui family. This idea is greatly enforced as we see little to no evidence in the film that Sydney
is an unpleasant person. With that being said, the film almost shows a balance of malice of both
characters to emphasize the idea that although they can be portrayed physically different, overall they
are fairly similar. Nonetheless, the fact that Chris is playing both roles raises the doubt that in fact they
may after all be similar; Charles, is indeed not who he appears to be. The 1980 s version of the novel

The Golden Age And The Golden Age
I have found myself thinking back to the first grade when comparing my time in that period of my life
to the golden age. In the first grade I relied on people more than ever for the basic necessities that I
needed at that time. I was sent to Bancroft Elementary School and it is located in Andover,
Massachusetts. At this point I was somewhat unknowingly guided through the first grade and it ended
up sharing many similarities with the golden age. The golden age is when man did not have to worry
about what is needed in the basic human life, this includes fighting, food, shelter, and justice. In this
young grade I recall vividly of not having a worry for any necessities that play a key part in everyday
life. When I was told to go to lunch I ended up eating the food given, but I was knowledgeable on how
it got on my plate; moreover, there seemed to be peace and a lack of physical violence throughout the
grade. This thought of having peace, food, little work, and having a roof over your head in the first
grade shares many similarities with what man experienced in the golden age.
In the first grade I did not understand the idea where justice and peace develops from; however,
reflecting on this now I can understand how this is something that I would have found to be
insignificant while being in the first grade. When I went to the first grade the safety protocols were not
as commonly practiced as they are current day. I had felt a sense of safety even though I may not have
been able

Hodgkin s Disease Research Paper
Risk Factors Scientists have found a number of risk factors that may influence the probability of
someone getting Hodgkin s disease, but it is still not clear how these factors increase the risk (4). For
example, some researchers think that infections with the Epstein Barr virus may sometimes cause
damage to the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in the B lymphocytes, which leads to the creation of
Reed Sternberg cells (4). DNA is the set of instructions sent to the genes that dictates cell functions.
Some genes are responsible for controlling when cells grow, divide, and die (4). Genes that assist the

Learning About Environmental Geometry: An Associative Model
Noam Y. Miller and Sara J. Shettleworth
University of Toronto
K. Cheng (1986) suggested that learning the geometry of enclosing surfaces takes place in a geometric
module blind to other spatial information. Failures to find blocking or overshadowing of geometry
learning by features near a goal seem consistent with this view. The authors present an operant model
in which learning spatial features competes with geometry learning, as in the Rescorla Wagner model.

The signature phenomena of cue competition in conditioning are overshadowing and blocking. In
overshadowing (Pavlov, 1927), when two cues are redundant predictors of the same outcome, less is
learned about either than when it is the sole predictor of the outcome. In blocking (Kamin, 1969),
training with a single cue reduces (blocks) learning about a second, redundant cue added later. Several
studies have looked for blocking or overshadowing of geometric information by features (for a review,
see Cheng Newcombe, 2005). Most studies have concluded that a predictive feature near a goal does
not block learning about the shape of an enclosure (e.g., Hayward, Good, Pearce, 2004; Pearce et al.,
2001; Wall et al., 2004). Moreover, in contrast with the expected competition between cues, geometry
is sometimes learned better in the presence than in the absence of informative features. Pearce et al.
(2001), for example, found that a beacon improved learning about the geometry of a triangular water
tank. Other researchers have come across hints of this same phenomenon (e.g., Hayward et al., 2004;
Hayward, McGregor, Good, Pearce, 2003). Using a geometrically unambiguous kite shaped water
tank, Graham, Good, McGregor, and Pearce (2006) demonstrated in rats substantial potentiation of
geometry learning by a feature. Kelly and Spetch (2004a, 2004b) also found clear evidence of
potentiation of geometry learning by a feature in an operant task in which people and pigeons were

Slave Trade Influence
The Atlantic Slave Trade impacted Africa in multiple negative ways: most people were captured and
sold as slaves for goods and shipped off to a new country, others were harassed, assaulted, and beaten.
Although our ancestors might not have been from Africa, slavery impacted our country, it changed the
world. African slavery impacted the world in many ways, however it s legacy lives within Elmina

Elmina castle was originally built as a trading establishment by the Portuguese in 1482, however it

These castles serve as historic landmarks to preserve the history of the Slave Trade, and more
importantly to preserve and protect the memories and lives of African ancestors, as well as protect the
beliefs and rights of others. Slavery is an important part of African history that effected many other
countries as well, such as the Unites States.
An important part of the United States history began with slavery, although it led to economic growth
within the country, it also led to other important events in history such as the Civil War, the
Underground Railroad, and the 13th amendment. In school children are taught about slavery and the
effects it had on the United States, effects that still plague this nation to this day. One cannot learn
about United States history without learning about other factors that contributed to and influenced this
country.
Elmina Castle represents the mistreatment African ancestors had to endure, it stands a memorial for
those who innocently lost their lives. Although Elmina Castle did not directly impact the United
States, the people who passed through their doors did.

During the 1820s, America felt they had the God given right to expand westward. Later, they adopted
this concept, expanding to nations around the world bringing religion, industry, and technology. This
new concept was known as American Imperialism, the economic and cultural influence of the United
States on other countries, occurring between 1880 and 1920. During the age of American Imperialism,
America annexed Texas and Hawaii. They acquired Florida, Oregon County, Alaska, the Louisiana

The Beginnings of Oakmont Pennsylvania
Oakmont was incorporated on March 4, 1889, but the community began seventy three years earlier
when a farmer named Michael Bright moved onto a 234 acre tract with his family. This area formed a
sizable part of Oakmont today Between that time and the creation of the borough, much happened that
shaped the town. The town developed from farms owned by early settlers Michael Bright, Jonathan
Hulton, David Grier, and Caleb Lee, into a thriving semi residential, semi industrial community. Even
dating before this there may have been Indian settlements near the mouth of Plum Creek. Indians may
not have lived in Oakmont at the time but they definitely hunted here for many flint arrowheads have
been found around town mainly near the river and along the banks of Plum Creek. It wasn t until the
late eighteenth century that white men settled in present day Oakmont. The land was offered for
thirteen cents per acre and a buyer could establish a claim to a tract by having it surveyed. The
purchase price did not have to be paid until a patent for the tract was obtained from Pennsylvania and
patenting could be deferred which encouraged land speculation rather than settlement. From 1769 to
1787 George Croghan, John Baird, William Maris, David Mcfee, and John Woods established claims
to tracts encompassing all of present day Oakmont. At this time Oakmont was part of Plum Township.
Almost all of these men were land speculators who never obtained patents for their tracts but sold their

The Importance Of State Disinvestment In Higher Education
One of the most obvious manifestations of this is the trend, now more than a decade in duration, of
state disinvestment in higher education. The 12 percent decline in state funding we have absorbed in
Kansas over the past 18 months was preceded by more than a decade of steady decline in the
proportion of university budgets supported by state funds. We see this trend in nearly every state.
State disinvestment in higher education is dangerous for a number of reasons.
First, not investing in higher education means not investing in innovation, discovery, work force
preparation and the growth of intellectual capital, all prominent features of the legendary American
ingenuity.

Terrorism, International And Domestic Terrorism
Terrorism is not a new issue in today s world. It has been an issue for centuries, and even in the
ancient world. The military strategy total war can be seen as terrorism because it struck fear in the
hearts in the next town before the army arrived. According to the United States Code and the FBI
website, terrorism is split in our law into three types. 18 U.S.C. § 2331 defines two types of terrorism,
international and domestic terrorism.
According to the FBI website, International terrorism is defined in the with the following three:
involve violent acts or acts dangerous to human life that violate federal or state law , Appear to be
intended (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government

transcend national boundaries in terms of the means by which they are accomplished, the persons they
appear intended to intimidate or coerce, or the locale in which their perpetrators operate or seek

Essay on Zapatista Movement in Mexcio
The Zapatista rebellion in Chiapas, Mexico got worldwide attention on January 1, 1994, when they
marched to Mexico City against the signing of the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
The free trade agreement was intended to facilitate trading between Canada, United States, and
Mexico. The Zapatista claimed that this agreement would affect the indigenous people of Chiapas by
further widening the gap between the poor and the rich. In this paper I will examine the NAFTA
agreement and the Zapatista s ideology and claims against the NAFTA agreement to see whether or

They would not be able to compete with the subsidized, artificially fertilized, mechanically harvested,

The signing of NAFTA also resulted in a big problem for the indigenous people in Mexico. Prior to
the signing of NAFTA, Article 27 Section VII in the Mexican Constitution guaranteed land reparations
to indigenous groups all throughout Mexico. With the signing of NAFTA, Article 27 Section VII was
instantly removed. This article of the constitution is extremely important to the Zapatista movement

Argumentative Essay On Population Control
Population control is a policy of attempting to limit the growth in numbers of a population
(dictionary.com). Kurt Vonnegut writes about a time when the United States population is stable at
forty million people. In order for them to stay at the same amount of people they take a life for every
new life. A situation as the one illustrated in the story would bring out human instincts in a negative
way. That is why this form of population control is a horrible idea because as humans we have the
instinct to do all we can for those we love and to survive. In all reality, the universe has its own natural
way of controlling the population and that s all that we need. As humans our basic human nature tells
us to do all we can for those we love. It is instinct for a parent to protect their child at all cost. It was
no shock when Vonnegut states, Wehling shot Dr. Hitz... then he shot Leora Duncan (Vonnegut). Its
hard to say Mr. Wehling s response in the story is completely normal. However, to a certain extent it is
because both Leora and Hitz would be the reason his triplets couldn t live. He didn t have anyone else
that would volunteer. That of course doesn t make what he did right but for him he was protecting his
child. Another thing that plays into our natural human instinct is often the people we love can do no
wrong in our eyes. Think about if your spouse cheats it is sometimes easy to forgive them because of
all the other amazing things that have done. Lastly, we will do whatever it takes to make those that
mean the most to us happy. That s why the grandfather in the story offered to go the Ethical Suicide
Studio . He wanted his grandson to have the life he always wanted by having children. He wouldn t
just choose to do this for his grandson unless he believed that it would make him happy. Wehling even
says, All I have to do is pick which one of the triplets is going to live, then deliver my maternal
grandfather to the Happy Hooligan, (Vonnegut). Do we really think he wanted to see his grandfather
go? No would be many people answers, he simply thinks about letting it happen because he believes it
will make his wife happy to keep all of her children. Doing all we can for those we love includes

How Discipline Is Not Easy
Discipline has always been, to me, a thought of growing in yourself or in this case growing in your
relationship with Christ. Discipline is not easy, in fact, it is hard, but the results are what we discipline
ourselves for. Celebration of Discipline was a very eye opening and insightful book in many aspects.
Foster, the author, describes spiritual discipline as an inward and outward reality. Meaning, the inner
and outward attitude of the discipline. The bible uses spiritual discipline to describe fasting, prayer,
worship, and even celebration. When Jesus spoke of spiritual discipline, he hardly gives instruction of
how to discipline ourselves spiritually. This book book gives more of an outline/guidance to types of
disciplines that could help you in your spiritual journey. There are three types of disciplines discussed
in this book, along with many sub categories within each type. All these groups are used to help one
form a more well rounded spiritual life. The types are inward, outward, and corporate discipline.
Inward discipline is a type of discipline that focuses on your inner self/spiritual life. This involves
things like praying, meditation, fasting, and studying. Outward disciple is more of what you can do as
an individual to discipline yourself spiritually, such as simplicity, solitude, submission, and service.
These are still self centered but more focused on the outside actions rather than the inside actions.
Finally, we have the corporate discipline. This

Scotland s Rural Economic Crisis
A rural economic crisis occurred as there was a decline of people working the land. The highland
population between the years of 1921 1930 witnessed a decrease of 13.8% in the highland counties
alone. This can be explained through an increase in emigration, loss of life from World War One and a
general decline in agriculture. The 1920 s saw an overall increase in emigration from Scotland, many
of these came from rural areas. An explanation into rural emigration could be in response to the land
raids that were occurring during this time. Land raids were carried out mainly by ex servicemen who
were under the illusion, they would be rewarded in land for war efforts. Therefore, showing the impact
of the interwar years upon rural society in Scotland. Another industry that suffered post war was the

However, during the interwar years, it became evident there was problems. The cost of fuel was rising
and fishermen struggled to keep up with the rising cost, while trying to restore their boats to a pre war
state. Significantly, the fishing industry lost their traditional export markets in Germany, Russia and
many Eastern European countries. Therefore, resulting in a decline of Scotland s fishing industry. It is
evident, Scotland s economy was in ruins after the war, the reliance upon staple industries witnessed a
domino effect that spread throughout Scotland. Which resulted in the interwar depression. However, it
also had a substantial impact upon Scotland s employment levels.
The interwar depression witnessed the emergence of mass unemployment. Scotland s recession was
deeper and more sustained than in England, resulting in higher levels of unemployment and a social
crisis. Notably, unemployment levels varied across industries, regions and demographic groups.
Unemployment rates were twice as high for men than they were for women, males aged between 55
59 and 18 24 experienced higher rates

Teaching Learners Develop Their Students Oral...
The materials, activities, exercises, and digital tools in the project can help Chinese EFL teachers
develop their students oral proficiency. In addition, with authentic learning materials and speaking
practices, the project is designed to help English learners develop their communicative abilities.
English teachers in China may refer to this curriculum in designing their own lessons for oral practice.
English teachers in China can find some inspirations from this project when they want to use some
speaking activities. This project may benefit EFL or ESL teachers who are teaching in a
communicative classroom. EFL teachers, as well as ESL teachers, can use the activities in the project
to practice students oral English. Also, English teachers can use some exercises in the project to assess
students oral proficiency and design a curriculum for instruction based on the assessments. Stein
(1999) said that oral proficiency refers to the ability that helps people to communicate effectively and
accurately in the target language. English teachers in China, who want to create an authentic learning
environment for the learners, can use the authentic materials in the curriculum or refer to the
curriculum to design their own. By learning the curriculum in this project, EFL learners may develop
their vocabulary, English skills and technology skills. If they are going to study in the U.S., the
curriculum can help them increase their English comprehension skills and the skills of

Account for the Failure of Nationalist Movements in...
Account for the general failure of nationalist movements in Southeast Asia in the period 1900 1941.
The failure to achieve political independence of pre war nationalism in Southeast Asia was mainly due
to the interplay of nationalist factors, impact of colonial response and inherent society composition.
Nationalist disunity watered down mass support which was key to success, while colonial rule
hindered the development of nationalism and the nature Southeast Asian society made unification hard
to achieve. Different causes had different level of significance in different countries. Firstly, the
ideological disunity among nationalist manifested through the existence of a myriad of different
movements with diverging aims and methods, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore the SCBA was in fact pro British and even aided Britain in her war effort. In the
Philippines, sincere American concessions such as Filipinization and mass education to equip local
leaders with requisite training for office left the nationalists with little scope to agitate over, resulting
in placid movements like Partido Nacionalista. This showed how colonial concession was a hindrance
to the politicization of movements. Lastly colonial implementation of carrot and stick concurrently
exacerbated the existing divisions between nationalists groups making a unified front impossible. In
Burma the British harshly suppressed the radical pongyis which had the mass mobilization ability but
was benevolent towards the moderate Western educated politicians who were able to achieve
constitutional progress. In Malaya the British emphasized on policies protecting Malay rights in
administration and land, leading to a series of Chinese and Indian movements demanding equal racial
rights such as the SCBA and CIAM. This divide and rule policy ruled out the possibility of a
combination of mass support and political capability which will then challenge the colonial
government. In addition, the very nature of Southeast Asian society was that it is deeply divided along
class, cultural racial and religious

50 % Vinegar Experiment
Discussion
The experiment included four cups: One contained 50% vinegar, the second contained 10% vinegar, a
third contained soda water, and the fourth contained distilled water. The hypothesis for the cup with
50% vinegar was that this would have the greatest amount of chemical weathering because it had the
most acidic solution. The hypothesis for the cup with 10% vinegar solution was that this would have
the second most chemical weathering, having the second most acidic solution. The hypothesis for the
cup with soda water was that this would be next in chemical weathering, having soda in the water. The
cup with distilled water was hypothesized to have the least amount of chemical weathering because
distilled water should be the most neutral ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The 50% vinegar solution was hypothesized to lose the most mass and was rejected by the data. This
proposes that the 50% vinegar solution could have destroyed some of the natural elements in the rock
that reacts to the carbonic acid. However, the rock in the 10% vinegar solution weathered the most
losing 2.5g of mass, having been hypothesized to lose the second most mass the hypothesis was
rejected by the data. The rock in the distilled water solution weathered the second most losing 0.9g of
mass however was hypothesized to lose the least mass which was rejected by the data.
Performing this experiment had limitations of not being able to analyze the rocks for specific elements
like an experienced scientist would have. Using rocks of the same mineral composition, and size
would eliminate that variable. The solutions were prepackaged and could not be analyzed with the
equipment on hand. Analyzing the solution would allow the scientist to identify the specific elements
in the solutions. The temperature in a professional lab would be regulated better than it was in this
experiment temperature plays an important role in chemical

The 2011 Customer Experience Impact Report projected that 86% of consumers will pay up to 25%
more for a better customer experience (2). In the paragraphs below, good customer service is broken
down into the definition, what the customer and employer view is, and how good customer service
affects the reputation of the business.
Definition
According to Customer Service for Dummies, customer service is how well an employee is
communicating and creating a relationship with a customer (1). Each business has either a mission
statement or purpose that incorporates customer service into it. Customer service policies within
businesses define how their employees should behavior when a situation arises with a customer.
An example of a customer service policy is the policy stated on the Fairfield Inn Suites in Grand
Island on its website. The policy states, At the Grand Island Fairfield Inn Suites, you are our #1
priority. We promise you will be satisfied, or we will make it right. That is our commitment to you.
Policies like this one show how some businesses take customer service very seriously because their
customers are of the most importance; although, most businesses have different views on what the true
meaning of customer service is in their business.
Customer View
Customers will tell 9 to 12 people if he or she gets good service while purchasing a product within a
company (Leland and Bailey 1). If a company treats its

HSBC has launched a new worldwide advertising campaign designed to define the distinct personality
of the Group s brand and introduce HSBC as the world s local bank .
The campaign will run on TV, in print and online, and over the course of the year it will appear across
the 81 countries and territories HSBC serves worldwide.
The concept was developed following worldwide consumer research which found that, while people
appreciate the value of international organizations and services, they question the prevailing one size
fits all global model. Consumers want to be treated as individuals, and to feel that companies care
about them, recognize their needs and understand what makes their community unique.
Underpinning the advertising is HSBC s philosophy that the world is a rich and diverse place in which
cultures and people should be treated with respect. Around the world, the Group has built its
businesses locally, and HSBC s 31 million customers can be confident that the service they receive has
a world of experience behind it.

The Third Core Theme Is Disruption
The third core theme is Disruption, which focuses on the bipolar impact on how the individual learns
to create consistency in their life s direction. This then spirals down to the disruption and discontinuity
in the person s education, employment, and career development. As human beings, it is pivotal that we
distinguish between what others believe we should or ought to be, and a person s individual belief of
what he or she should or would ideally like to be. When diagnosed with bipolar disorder, many have a
sense of the direction their life is taking as being unmanageable, along with trouble establishing any
momentum of evolvement. The person s view on where they should be in life can be a direct link to

These hindrances kept many participants from making positive alternative decisions to help with their
continuity in life.
Problems in the development of a sense of self is the last core theme. This theme focuses on the self
construction and resultant perceptions of themselves shaped by bipolar I disorder. The struggles
accompanied with having bipolar disorder had on the process of developing a sense of self and
identity are confusion, self doubt and self acceptance. These three struggles are linked as hindrances to
understanding the three basic domains of self.
The first is your actual self, according to the self discrepancy theory, describes the qualities that
someone (yourself or another) believes you possess. Your representation of these qualities that
someone (yourself or another) would like for you to possess, is called your ideal self (Higgins, E.T.,
1987). The qualities that others hope for in the individual suffering from Bipolar I disorder are the
hopes, aspirations, or wishes for that particular individual. Lastly, the ought self, is your own
illustration of the qualities or characteristics that someone (yourself or another) believes you should or

Inmate Care Problem
Medical problems do not magically disappear once someone has been incarcerated. If anything, I
believe they are more prevalent within corrections. I say that because the first thing said from many
people I arrest is, I need to see a doctor and get my medications. I have even arrested people who
openly told me the reason they broke the law is so they could get free medical attention, such as
surgery or dental work. This not only hurts the budget of a jail or prison, but also the pockets of
taxpayers. According to York, Inmate health care costs are on the rise. This is not surprising knowing
that a great percentage of the inmate population is involved in a risky life of drugs, drinking,
unprotected sex and improper health habits. The cost of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When looking at medical problems reported, females were more probable to report a medical problem
versus male inmates. In addition, females are more likely to report two or more medical problems
versus male inmates. I can relate to this first hand, because many women I have arrested stated that
they were pregnant or they have back issues. Even though prior to coming to jail, they were drinking,
taking drugs, and failed to mention they were pregnant or had back issues. This report also showed as
the age of the inmate increases so does the likelihood of a medical problem being reported. In
addition, hearing and visions reports also increase with age. Leaning, speech, hearing, vision,
mobility, and mental impairment are the six impairments that are reported by inmates. Both male and
female inmates were equal in reporting of having at least one of the six impairments. When it comes
to mental impairment, females were more likely to report than males. Injuries will occur within
prisons, whether accidental or because of fighting. The report shows that both state and federal
inmates are more likely to report accidental injuries versus fight related

Disadvantages Of Food Indonalds
To keep up with competitors, food retailers are adding restaurants and carryouts to their stores.
Installing restaurants within stores adds convenience for consumers, offering no frills brands to
compete with nationally advertised brands, providing economy family packs to compete with food
clubs, operating fast checkouts lanes, and providing banking within the stores, to prevent them from
coming off as monopolistic. Consumers want to shop at stores that are easier for them. By adding
restaurants to stores, consumers may say that buying food from those restaurants may seem easier than
going home to cook a meal with the food items they just bought. As the saying goes, never go to the
store hungry because having restaurants within a store will attract more customers because they are
hungry while they are shopping. Food retailers want their stores to seem more convenient and better
for shoppers, that they must find ways to draw more customers in and by adding in store restaurants
and carryouts they can do so.
Instead of going to different stores because of the different prices, customers are going to pay for
items no matter the price, so they do not have to travel to another store. If the store offers those
products, then customers will buy the items instead because it is more convenient. Even though the
price of one item may be cheaper at another store, customers are still going to put the item in the
basket because they do not want to have to get out at another store just for

  • 2. How Is Offred And The Commander Offred and the Commander The Commander represents the Government and the System in the novel. The most effective way in which the novel brought out gender bias was Offred s narration of how the Gilead society claims her body as property of the Government s. She clearly states that she is part of a collectively owned resource, We are containers, it s only the insides of our bodies that are important. The outside can become hard and wrinkled for all they care, like the shell of a nut. (Atwood 150). Handmaids are no more than vessels, no more than passageways that facilitate the existence of a baby and Offred s empty womb is being watched by the government. It is the central object which is more real than her. Yet Offred realized the powerlessness of the Commander as a part of the system. He does not have the ability He wouldn t be able to intervene, to save me; the transgressions of women in the household, whether Martha or Handmaid, are supposed to be under the jurisdiction of the Wives alone. (Atwood 162) This also allows the readers a glimpse into the power and infiltration of Mayday against the Eyes . The readers are able to see the powerlessness and the inefficiency of the State though the Commander s impotence and restriction placed on him by the State itself. • 4. The Paternalistic Doctor Patient Relationship It is difficult to imagine a time when exploitation of patients was a normal practice. It is worse that such a time was not all that long ago. While reading the story of Henrietta Lacks, I consistently had to remind myself that times were different. Doctors did not necessarily intend to harm their patients in any way, however it is impossible not to feel pity for Henrietta, her family, and any others who were mistreated simply due to the ignorance of the times. One of the noticeable recurrent themes of this story was the paternalistic doctor patient relationship. There were multiple occasions in which Day mentioned how he simply trusted the doctors to do what was right. He and Henrietta assumed doctors understood their patients needs better than the patients themselves, and therefore never asked questions. My understanding is that this was a common mentality at the time. I imagine this mentality was especially prominent among less fortunate classes of people who did not have the means to understand what their doctors were telling them. In cases in which harm befell patients, the doctor patient relationship was likely a primary culprit. Doctors had a paternalistic attitude, and therefore did not excel at communicating with their patients, specifically at a level that was appropriate to the given situation. Adding to the problem, patients did not ask questions, simply because they did not know they had the option to do so. The opportunity to observe a classic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although, in the 1980 version of A Tale of Two Cities directed by Jim Goddard, the same actor, Chris Sarandon plays the role of both Sydney Carton and Charles Darnay. Through having such change being made, it severely shifts the theme of the novel. For starters, the author is trying to reveal the idea of resurrection but does so by the character of Sydney Carton and when he decides to give his own life for that of Charles. Thus, when both characters are the same actors in the film, it also creates new ideas of who Sydney really seeks to be, not only himself but Charles as well. In the novel, Sydney s character is portrayed as cruel and a man who has no purpose in life and dishonorable among the community. In contrast, Charles is classy, and handsome. However, as Chris plays both characters, it raises questions on who they really, and if after all they seek to be different. As a result of the theme of resurrection shifted from the novel to the movie, it is relevant to state that now these characters have slightly diverse significance and their standpoint is most definitely changed. Due to the fact that both Charles and Sydney have been portrayed by the same person, it reveals that after all they simply do not seek to be very much diverse. As a matter of fact, we see the mischievous side of Charles when he fails to announce that he is related to the Marquis, he is part of the Marqui family. This idea is greatly enforced as we see little to no evidence in the film that Sydney is an unpleasant person. With that being said, the film almost shows a balance of malice of both characters to emphasize the idea that although they can be portrayed physically different, overall they are fairly similar. Nonetheless, the fact that Chris is playing both roles raises the doubt that in fact they may after all be similar; Charles, is indeed not who he appears to be. • 8. The Golden Age And The Golden Age I have found myself thinking back to the first grade when comparing my time in that period of my life to the golden age. In the first grade I relied on people more than ever for the basic necessities that I needed at that time. I was sent to Bancroft Elementary School and it is located in Andover, Massachusetts. At this point I was somewhat unknowingly guided through the first grade and it ended up sharing many similarities with the golden age. The golden age is when man did not have to worry about what is needed in the basic human life, this includes fighting, food, shelter, and justice. In this young grade I recall vividly of not having a worry for any necessities that play a key part in everyday life. When I was told to go to lunch I ended up eating the food given, but I was knowledgeable on how it got on my plate; moreover, there seemed to be peace and a lack of physical violence throughout the grade. This thought of having peace, food, little work, and having a roof over your head in the first grade shares many similarities with what man experienced in the golden age. In the first grade I did not understand the idea where justice and peace develops from; however, reflecting on this now I can understand how this is something that I would have found to be insignificant while being in the first grade. When I went to the first grade the safety protocols were not as commonly practiced as they are current day. I had felt a sense of safety even though I may not have been able ... The signature phenomena of cue competition in conditioning are overshadowing and blocking. In overshadowing (Pavlov, 1927), when two cues are redundant predictors of the same outcome, less is learned about either than when it is the sole predictor of the outcome. In blocking (Kamin, 1969), training with a single cue reduces (blocks) learning about a second, redundant cue added later. Several studies have looked for blocking or overshadowing of geometric information by features (for a review, see Cheng Newcombe, 2005). Most studies have concluded that a predictive feature near a goal does not block learning about the shape of an enclosure (e.g., Hayward, Good, Pearce, 2004; Pearce et al., 2001; Wall et al., 2004). Moreover, in contrast with the expected competition between cues, geometry is sometimes learned better in the presence than in the absence of informative features. Pearce et al. (2001), for example, found that a beacon improved learning about the geometry of a triangular water tank. Other researchers have come across hints of this same phenomenon (e.g., Hayward et al., 2004; Hayward, McGregor, Good, Pearce, 2003). Using a geometrically unambiguous kite shaped water tank, Graham, Good, McGregor, and Pearce (2006) demonstrated in rats substantial potentiation of geometry learning by a feature. • 22. Argumentative Essay On Population Control Population control is a policy of attempting to limit the growth in numbers of a population (dictionary.com). Kurt Vonnegut writes about a time when the United States population is stable at forty million people. In order for them to stay at the same amount of people they take a life for every new life. A situation as the one illustrated in the story would bring out human instincts in a negative way. That is why this form of population control is a horrible idea because as humans we have the instinct to do all we can for those we love and to survive. In all reality, the universe has its own natural way of controlling the population and that s all that we need. As humans our basic human nature tells us to do all we can for those we love. It is instinct for a parent to protect their child at all cost. It was no shock when Vonnegut states, Wehling shot Dr. Hitz... then he shot Leora Duncan (Vonnegut). Its hard to say Mr. Wehling s response in the story is completely normal. However, to a certain extent it is because both Leora and Hitz would be the reason his triplets couldn t live. He didn t have anyone else that would volunteer. That of course doesn t make what he did right but for him he was protecting his child. Another thing that plays into our natural human instinct is often the people we love can do no wrong in our eyes. Think about if your spouse cheats it is sometimes easy to forgive them because of all the other amazing things that have done. Lastly, we will do whatever it takes to make those that mean the most to us happy. That s why the grandfather in the story offered to go the Ethical Suicide Studio . He wanted his grandson to have the life he always wanted by having children. He wouldn t just choose to do this for his grandson unless he believed that it would make him happy. Wehling even says, All I have to do is pick which one of the triplets is going to live, then deliver my maternal grandfather to the Happy Hooligan, (Vonnegut). Do we really think he wanted to see his grandfather go? No would be many people answers, he simply thinks about letting it happen because he believes it will make his wife happy to keep all of her children. Doing all we can for those we love includes protecting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 23. How Discipline Is Not Easy Discipline has always been, to me, a thought of growing in yourself or in this case growing in your relationship with Christ. Discipline is not easy, in fact, it is hard, but the results are what we discipline ourselves for. Celebration of Discipline was a very eye opening and insightful book in many aspects. Foster, the author, describes spiritual discipline as an inward and outward reality. Meaning, the inner and outward attitude of the discipline. The bible uses spiritual discipline to describe fasting, prayer, worship, and even celebration. When Jesus spoke of spiritual discipline, he hardly gives instruction of how to discipline ourselves spiritually. This book book gives more of an outline/guidance to types of disciplines that could help you in your spiritual journey. There are three types of disciplines discussed in this book, along with many sub categories within each type. All these groups are used to help one form a more well rounded spiritual life. The types are inward, outward, and corporate discipline. Inward discipline is a type of discipline that focuses on your inner self/spiritual life. This involves things like praying, meditation, fasting, and studying. Outward disciple is more of what you can do as an individual to discipline yourself spiritually, such as simplicity, solitude, submission, and service. These are still self centered but more focused on the outside actions rather than the inside actions. Finally, we have the corporate discipline. This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 24. Scotland s Rural Economic Crisis A rural economic crisis occurred as there was a decline of people working the land. The highland population between the years of 1921 1930 witnessed a decrease of 13.8% in the highland counties alone. This can be explained through an increase in emigration, loss of life from World War One and a general decline in agriculture. The 1920 s saw an overall increase in emigration from Scotland, many of these came from rural areas. An explanation into rural emigration could be in response to the land raids that were occurring during this time. Land raids were carried out mainly by ex servicemen who were under the illusion, they would be rewarded in land for war efforts. The failure to achieve political independence of pre war nationalism in Southeast Asia was mainly due to the interplay of nationalist factors, impact of colonial response and inherent society composition. Nationalist disunity watered down mass support which was key to success, while colonial rule hindered the development of nationalism and the nature Southeast Asian society made unification hard to achieve. In the Philippines, sincere American concessions such as Filipinization and mass education to equip local leaders with requisite training for office left the nationalists with little scope to agitate over, resulting in placid movements like Partido Nacionalista. This showed how colonial concession was a hindrance to the politicization of movements. Lastly colonial implementation of carrot and stick concurrently exacerbated the existing divisions between nationalists groups making a unified front impossible. In Burma the British harshly suppressed the radical pongyis which had the mass mobilization ability but was benevolent towards the moderate Western educated politicians who were able to achieve constitutional progress. In Malaya the British emphasized on policies protecting Malay rights in administration and land, leading to a series of Chinese and Indian movements demanding equal racial rights such as the SCBA and CIAM. Installing restaurants within stores adds convenience for consumers, offering no frills brands to compete with nationally advertised brands, providing economy family packs to compete with food clubs, operating fast checkouts lanes, and providing banking within the stores, to prevent them from coming off as monopolistic. Consumers want to shop at stores that are easier for them. By adding restaurants to stores, consumers may say that buying food from those restaurants may seem easier than going home to cook a meal with the food items they just bought. As the saying goes, never go to the store hungry because having restaurants within a store will attract more customers because they are hungry while they are shopping. Food retailers want their stores to seem more convenient and better for shoppers, that they must find ways to draw more customers in and by adding in store restaurants and carryouts they can do so. Instead of going to different stores because of the different prices, customers are going to pay for items no matter the price, so they do not have to travel to another store.
