1900s. A silent film is that which consists of only the picture, and no sound. This was an era of
truly transformative filmmaking, forcing writers and producers to have to step out of a
comfort zone in order to allow purely visual expressions to touch their audiences and convey
their stories. This was achieved through a greater emphasis on facial expressions and body
language. Firstly, one of the greatest movies in the silent era was that by Keaton, Sherlock Jr.
This film encompasses all the core principles of telling a story through silence and overcoming
the cinematic boundaries of its day. The key to achieving this is through the direct
expressiveness of the body language of the actors alongside the plot and how Keaton
specifically selected the scenes. The film begins with a love story between a wealthy girl
(Kathryn McGuire) and a projectionist at a local movie theatre. His dream to become a detective
is what drives the film. A memorable scene in the movie is that in the candy shop when Keaton

I think Night of Surrender serves to showcase the difficulty Holocaust survivors faced when
attempting to transition back into the regular world. This tension faced by all Jewish survivors
after World War 2 is the central theme of the story. We see the female protagonist struggle with
trying to find happiness after staying relatively safe during the Holocaust. I should be happy to have
survived, but I wasn t happy, and I was upset to be so sad (Fink 93). The woman cannot seem to
escape her past even on such a celebratory night the night of the surrender. She goes on to reveal

Socially Engaged Art. Definition. There exists a cornucopia of terminology when it comes to
activism realized through the arts. Among them are: social practice (which circumvents the
method of engagement); socially engaged art ; arts activism ; social justice art ; community based
art ; etc. (Dewhurst, 2010; Helguera, 2011). Although many of these terms can be used
interchangeably, for the sake of consistency this paper will refer to this practice as socially engaged
arts, or SEA. As Dewhurst aptly outlines, Despite these various names, this work often shares a

The Soviet economy heavily depended on its agricultural sector. From 1929 onwards Stalin began
the enforced system of state and collective farms, known as sovkhozy and kolkhozy respectively.
These collectivized farms soon proved both impracticable and too costly (Davies 1980). A number
of factors contributed to the level of inefficiency of the Soviet collectivized system throughout its
history, and this essay will discuss these factors and ultimately comment on the key factors
responsible for these inefficiencies. Primarily, this essay will concentrate on, the poor treatment of
peasants who worked on the collective farms, and the impacts this treatment had on their incentives
to produce. Throughout this essay there will be a strong focus on the labour market as the main
cause of inefficiencies, along with the inability of the Soviet Union to correctly manage the sizeable
farms. I will show that these two factors working in union strongly support the argument of why
agriculturewas considered to be such an inefficient sector of the Soviet Economy. There are other
factors which also contribute to these inefficiency problems, they will be touched upon, but only

more machine based production process, it became evident that large deficiencies existed within the

Therefore, how does the socioeconomic and political context influence the gendered anti fat
narratives? In fact, the gendered anti fat discussions are perpetuated and proliferated across
Canada. First, a critical analysis of the economic, political, social and moral discourses is required
to identify the meaning of power around fat women and how it is implemented. Second, this paper
will critically discuss how to dismantle power from the feminism and fat acceptance movement
perspective, and the role of the stakeholder groups. Third and last, this paper will address my role,
