Character Analysis of Emma in Jane Austen s...
`Emma was written by Jane Austen in 1816. In all her novels, she is primarily a moral writer,
striving to establish criteria of sound judgement and right conduct in human life. In Emma she
presents her lesson so astutely and so dramatically, with such a minimum of exposition, that she
places extreme demands upon the reader s perceptiveness. Emmawas her fourth novel. Lord David
Cecil described it as `Jane Austens profoundest comedy . It has frequently been applauded for its
`engaging, dear, delicious, idiotic heroine , moving in `a place of laughter and nonsense , and
excoriated because `it does not instruct ... does not teach the modern reader... how to be and move
in our world . In her novel, Jane Austen criticizes the manners... Show more content on

Woodhouse, had hired Miss Taylor as Emma s governess, and the two became more like sisters,
Emma being allowed to have things her way most of the time.
For sixteen years Miss Taylor lived with the Woodhouse family, and she became a particular
friend to Emma, in spirit more a sister. In chapter I, Miss Taylor has just been married to Mr.
Weston, making what was a suitable match for both, and Emma is wondering how she will bear
the change of not having Miss Taylor around. Luckily Mrs. Weston will only be half mile away.
Though it was a good match, and Emma had wanted this good fortune for her governess, she could
not help but feel sadness.
It is necessary for a 21st century reader of Austen s work to be aware of some of the standards in
society which Emma accepted as right and proper, but which Jane Austen realised were changing.
Understanding of the society of the period helps you to place Emma Woodhouse and her
development as a character in the context.
In the early nineteenth century, arts and sciences flourished, and growing trade brought wealth into
the country. The people believed at that time, that the Western civilization was at a higher level

The Treaty of Versailles is a peace document that was signed at the end of World War l by Allied
powers and Germany at the Palace of Versailles, France on June 28th, 1919. However the treaty had
taken effect on January 10th, 1920. The Arrangement of Versailles was drafted by agents of

School Lunch Programs
In this article entitled, No Lunch left Behind, Alice Waters and Katrina Heronfeb state The
National School Lunch Program should be revised. According to the authors, the United States
Department of Agriculture spends $2.57 for a free lunch, $2.17 for a reduce price lunch and 24
cents for a paid lunch. Even though in 2007 the program cost about $9 billion, the very little of this
amount went toward food. The most of the money was spent for custodial services or cafeteria s
maintenance. As a result, schools received reimbursable meals which are valued about twenty cents
per meal. The food distributed by the National SchoolLunch Program contains some of the
ingredients found in fast food, and as a result that food did not meet nutritional standards.... Show

This alternative program is used by schools in Berkeley and the difference is that all the
products used to prepare school lunches are fresh and come from the local farmers. As a result,
students received a healthy lunch and local farmers have the opportunity to sell their products.
Experts had calculated that a wholesome meal for a student will cost $5, or about $ 27 billion a
year. Also, it is necessary to make a one time investment in the school kitchen, so there will be
possible to cook food from fresh ingredients. Even though this project looks expensive, we will
have a healthy lunch for every child. To realize this project, the Agriculture Department has to
implement a new program that will allow local farmers to deliver food, especially fruits and
vegetables from local farms to schools. Also, the Department of Education has to come with
initiatives such as teaching children to eat well. Every child deserves a healthy lunch prepared with
fresh ingredients which will lead to decrease the number of diet related problems among

Sternberg s Triangular Theory Of Commuality And...
Commitment has proven to be an integral component within most lasting relationships. Many
scholars have worked to uncover the reasoning behind what leads to increased commitment and
relationship longevity. Of course, with each romantic relationship, the reasons for why an
individual or a couple remains together can vary, leading to a wide variety of theories to be
established to explain the components of commitment. Theories include a focus on the investment
theoryof commitment, perceived relationship satisfaction, relationship alternatives, and the rewards
and costs of a relationship in correlation to motivators behind commitment. The primary goal of this
paper is to examine the complexities of commitment in relation to the aforementioned theories for
promoting relationship longevity.
In order to best understand the role of commitment within already established romantic
relationships, it s necessary to look at the various theories concerning topics of commitment. First
and foremost, the work of Lemieux and Hale analyze Sternberg s Triangular Theory of Love, which
serves as a strong foundation for understanding the role of commitment within a romantic
relationship. The aforementioned theory states that love is composed of three parts: intimacy,
passion, and commitment. According to the studies pertaining to this theory, each of the three
components change in prevalence throughout the course of a relationship.
Lemieux and Hale have found that there are varying correlations

Comparing Picasso And Van Gogh
In this essay, I will be comparing and contrasting artists Pablo Picasso and Van Gogh, considering
their intentions with their artwork. Van Gogh and Picasso two of the most famous artists out there
and still are to this day. Uncountable books have been published and dedicated to them and their
lives and careers of being true artist. Their art has changed the way people view things and the
world around them.
Vincent van Gogh was one of many artists who self taught himself, who transformed the appearance
of Post Impressionism incessantly. His main focuses were his paintings, which he mostly painted in
oil mediums. In his time, he has produced lot of paintings, most of which were of cityscapes, figure
and landscape scenery. Unlike Pablo ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The painting shows five women naked with flat figures, disintegrated planes and faces, inspired
by African masks. The compacted space the figures occupy appears to project forward in jagged
shards; a fiercely pointed slice of melon in the still life of fruit at the bottom of the composition
teeters on an impossibly upturned table top. In this painting, Picasso makes a radical departure
from traditional European painting by adaptation of Primitivism and abandonment of perspective in
goodwill of a level two dimensional picture of a plane.
On the other hand, Vincent van Gogh did not do any cubism work during his time as an artist,
however, had more of an interest in drawing. Pablo Picasso had an interest in drawing too, but
unlike his work, Vincent van Gogh s drawings are appreciated without the need for bright
colours, drawings such as his depiction of figures, light and landscape. Van Gogh drew using a
lot of different media, such as chalks, red pen and charcoal, although he often mixed mediums as
well when it came to drawing. He drew on not just paper, but a variety of paper types, and
materials. However, Van Gogh s methods of drawing are very different to Pablo Picasso s.
Pablo Picasso s way of drawing can be seen as very different and rather similar at the same time
compared to Vincent Van Gogh s method. Drawing allowed van Gogh to capture light and images
more quickly than with painting and

The Influence of the USSR during the Cold War
..all these famous cities and the populations around them lie in the Soviet sphere and all are
subject in one form or another, not only to Soviet influence but to a very high and increasing
measure of control from Moscow.. (Churchill 6 7), this is a lesser known quote from Winston
Churchill s famous Iron Curtain speech. This sentence, in reality, is the sentence that comes right
after the famous Iron Curtain has descended across the continent quote, one that most Americans
have heard in History Class. The Iron Curtain related to a period of the Cold War where the
USSR controls most of the eastern half of Europe. History classes tell their students a lot about
how America and the USSR were on the brink of war; nuclear weapons could have destroyed the
world at any given moment, the Iron Curtain over Europe, that whole ordeal. The one thing that
Social Studies classes never really covered was the effect that the USSR had on the countries it
occupied, influenced, or controlled, and even in today s world, Russiastill impacts similar territory
as it used to back during the Cold War. Back during the days of the USSR, the country had much
control over Eastern Europe, including Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Ukraine, Belarus,
Czechoslovakia, eastern Poland, Hungary, Rumania, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, and of course, Eastern
Germany. Many of the further away countries of the controlled area were not as heavily influenced
as some of the countries that actually became part of the USSR,

One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich Analysis
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn s One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich can be seen as a testament to
the spirit of the Russian people by exposing the suffering and struggles of the Gulag. Solzhenitsyn
offers an authentic perspective of the hierarchy that controls the Gulag, the brutality of the
weather, and the inhumane work hours. Alyoshka can be seen as a symbol for faith and religion,
as his faith in God allows him to proceed through his long work day without being weighed down
by the hardships of life in the Gulag. The reader understands Solzhenitsyn s experiences as a
prisoner through Shukhov s experiences. Through Fetyukov, Solzhenitsyn reveals that for some
prisoners, dignity is the price of survival. Solzhenitsyn s alternative narrative style exposes, to the
reader, the subconscious thoughts of Shukhov and depicts his feelings towards other characters.
The novelOne Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovichconveys the extent that the negative aspects,
unjust suffering, and struggles in the Gulag alter the human spirit. as the characters human Spirit
adapted seamlessly to the Gulag environment, remains the same or fades in the Gulag. From the

The Importance Of Spanking Children
It is a good idea to spank your children yes, I think that it is a great idea. Today in this generation
parents do not like to say no to their kids and they get whatever they want. This is a big problem
with children running their parents today and the parents are not saying no or disciplining them.
I believe that kids today should be spanked. Many kids today do not have any respect for anyone
like adults, teachers, and their grandparents. In this generation parents do not like to spank or
discipline their children. They don t like doing this because they think it could hurt their children
if they do so. When a child does something wrong they act a certain way, and get into trouble they
should get spank for what they did. When a child gets into trouble they should be spanked for it
because it teaches great life skills when it comes to it. With spankingthere are many lessons when it
comes to it. When I was growing up I got spanked if I did something wrong. After I got spanked I
never did that thing again that I did to get spanked again. I have learned a lot of life lessons
when it comes to spanking. I have become a great respectful adult because I was spanked
growing up. Today I repst everyone that I meet today because of the lessons I was taught. There
are lessons when it comes to spanking your children. I am glad this happened to me growing up
because if it wasn t I would not have become the person that I am today. There are many lessons

Edgar Allan Poe
Introduction
In this project, I will be discussing about my poet Edgar Allan Poe. Poe had written numerous of
poems and stories but the one I chose was Annabel Lee . This poem was written in 1849 which
was a long time ago. Even though this poem is centuries old, it is still a well known poem. This
whole project includes a biography, literary movement, and a explication about the poem.
The biography includes where Poe grew up and how his lifestyle were. Through research and
sources, I found out that Poe lived a hard life. He was in a lot of debts with no money. Not only
was that, Annabel Lee known as a romanticism which was also established during the European
times. This poem was one of my favorite.
The explication was an opinion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Poe was unconscious for several days and died in the hospital on Sunday, October 7, 1849. His
death was mysterious and there were many urban stories to his death.
Literary Movement
Edgar Allan Poe wrote Annabel Lee in the year of 1849 (Cynthia A. Bily). After his wife died, he
had published this poem. The era that this poem was written was during the nineteenth century,
European literature. Poe s poems and stories were greatly influenced to French Symbolism who
then alter to new modernism. ( Edgar Allan Poe Poetry Foundation). Annabel Lee was the love of
his life, his wife. Due to this poem, he expresses many and also deep feelings towards his wife.
You could tell that he was heartbroken and longing for the love of his life.
Poe s poem Annabel Lee falls under Romanticism. Romanticism was well known by its origin and
influence. By the 1820, it traveled through Europe and towards the west hemisphere where musical
introduced it. After these years, Romanticism was well known and also used in many ways. As of
today, it is still popular ( Romanticism Paul Brians). Romantic is also a part of nature and its
power. Romanticism is beauty and its art that is widespread among everything.
As for the criticism for this poem, overall was very positive. Most people who read had read this
poem had greatly liked it. Soni00sh, the publisher of its criticism, said that Poe, maybe, wanted to
make a point that there is such a thing as true, undying love. This meant that

The Right Side of History
Unrest in the Arab World
Will the United States be on the right side of history?
The Right Side of History? The wave of demonstrations, uprisings and revolutions in North Africa
and the Middle East has presented the United States with a complex set of diplomatic problems.
While a key component of U.S. foreign policy is promoting and supporting democracy, it is vital to
U.S. interests that the Middle East remains relatively stable. A truly democratic Arab world is a
new concept, and is one that has yet to show its true colors. If the result of the Palestinian

Shortly after the protests began in Tunisia, a wave of protests and demonstrations swept over the
Arab world, from Algeria to Yemen, with few countries being exempt from the movement. Leaders
of wealthier countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain, offered economic concessions to
stave off unrest. Other leaders offered minor political concessions. Yet the protests continue. The
Egyptian Revolution, which began with protests on January 25, 2011 and lasted for 18 days,
became a media sensation watched worldwide. Not only conventional media, but social media as
well. Social media played an unprecedented and important role in Egypt, changing the face of
revolutions forever. Unlike Tunisia, a marginal actor in the region, Egypt is the most populous, and
one could argue, the most important country in the Middle East, at least in terms of maintaining
stability. The U.S., which had backed the Egyptian government militarily since 1979 and had

Analysis Of Etgar Keret sWhat Of This Goldfish Would You...
It is usually a challenge to choose between the devil and the deep blue sea. Ordinarily, one has to
consider one s values as well as preferred consequences in order to make the better or best choice.
In the short story, What of This Goldfish, Would You Wish? by Etgar Keret, Sergei Goralick faced
a similar conundrum. As an aloof Russian expatriate fisherman in Jaffa, Israel, his only company is
a magic three wishgranting fish. But having impulsively murdered Yonatan, Goralick had to
decide whether to use his last wish to save the boy or keep his magic goldfish companion.
Though he would have preferred the latter, Goralick made the better choice saving Yonatan as it
matches his established humaneness and the consequences attached were more reasonable.
Before he arrived at this decision, Gorelick considered covering up the murder to keep the fish.
He said, Fixable... I ll just mop up the blood... When I m fishing,...I ll tie the kid to a rock and
dump him in the sea. Not a chance, not in a million years, will anyone ever find him. ( lines 164
171) His stubbornness started surfacing, obstructing his sound reasoning. Goralick tried to find
excuses in order not to use his last wish. For example, he said that he was saving it for something
important.Goralick was ambivalent.Whilst suggesting this, he forgot how scared he was to even
touch Yonatan s blood(lines 124 127). That along with his statement, He can t be dead (110 113)
proves that had he chosen otherwise, Goralick would have suffered from guilt. In fact, even the
goldfish asserted, You killed him, Sergei, ... but you re not a murderer. ... If, on this, you won t
waste a wish, then tell me, Sergei, what is it good for? Though what immediately happened after
this question was skipped, one can infer that Sergei thought thoroughly during that time. He
rightfully chose to save Yonatan. His actions such the uses of his first two wishes reveal his
character traits.
When he heard of the critical conditions of his sister and Sveta s boy respectively, he did not
hesitate to use his first two wishes to save them respectively. His sister had a fatal lung cancer; The
fish undid it in an instant the words barely out of Sergei s mouth. .(lines 135 137) And

Compare And Contrast Atonement And Pride And Prejudice
Throughout the years, things have been known to be similar and yet be different at the same
time. A true example of this is the comparison of Atonement and Pride and Prejudice. In these
two wonderful stories, comparisons can be found over subjects like class, love, war, family, as
well as societal issues. It may not make sense at first as to why a reader would want to compare
these two stories, but after looking at them carefully, one can come away from the comparisons
and be filled with a knowledge that could end up teaching great historical lessons as well as moral
lessons. It just goes to show a reader that two things can be different but, in the same way, be
completely the same, and in the end, can teach important lessons.
An example of a comparison which can be found between Atonement and Pride and Prejudice has
to do with family. In Atonement, for example, there is Cecilia s family which is a well to do
family that has learned how to be proper and sophisticated. Even at the most trying times in life,
like when the twins ran off, they were still proper in the way they went about the matter.
Atonement also shows the family of Robbie and his mother, and how even though they were
poor, they tried their hardest to live life at its best. They were hardworking people who worked
for this rich family and because they were so good, they touched the hearts of the rich family, and
were able to expand their life to a degree that without Cecilia s family, they could not have done.

Taking A Gap Year Essay
Take the gap year Every year there are millions of students who graduate high school and the
majority will go to college. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, Of the
3.0 million youth age 16 to 24 who graduated from high school between January and October
2015, about 2.1 million (69.2 percent) were enrolled in college in October. ( College par 3.) The
other nine hundred thousand students will either delay college or have decided to never enter
college. Taking time off between your high school graduation and the start of college, or during
college, is considered a gap year. This time off can be structured, such as traveling for
volunteering. On the other hand, it can be unstructured, such as leisurely activities. Some of the
most prestigious colleges in the United States encourage taking a gap year, including Harvard,
Yale, Princeton, and Cornell. For nearly 40 years, Harvard has recommended this option, indeed
proposing it in the letter of admission. (Fitzsimmons et al. Par. 21). There are a great deal of
benefits to students delaying the start of college and taking a gap year. One of those valuable
benefits is the ability of gaining life experience. When taking a gap year, the student may have the
ability to travel outside their normal life. Traveling gives an individual a new insight and
perspective into the world. According to Bob Clagett, the director of college counseling at St.

Swot analysis of Tesco plc Essay
Swot analysis of Tesco plc
We all know Tesco as a food retailer, and we know that they are in constant competition with other
retailers such as Sainsburys and Asda, yet we do not know much about what goes on beyond the
shelves and the tills, the marketing plans and the day to day tactics that have to be devised to stay
the number one food retailer in the United kingdom today.
I am going to analyse Broughton Parks Tesco and their possible competitors Swot Analysis

Their Customer Plan delivers the customer part of their strategy. It s an annual activity plan, and is
an agenda for customers with these projects forming part of category plans. It is designed to drive
trade, and to improve the shopping experience for customers.
The Operational Plan is an annual activity plan, including for example upgrading, replenishing
systems and better ways to build stores for the future. Lets now look at our store portfolio in the U
K.
This can be broken down into Hypermarkets, Superstores, and High street amp; Express stores.
Tesco hypermarkets, of which some in the UK are now up to 100,000 sq. f t. such as
Peterborough, Watford , have been designed to a footprint which is being used world wide across
our business.
They have 277 superstores including Broughton Park, 81 compact superstores, 27 Express stores,
41 Metro stores, and 229 other stores (mainly high street stores, which Chester s Tesco is). They
also have Tesco.com, which has no walls so they could sell houses, garden furniture and trips to
the moon! Looking at the number of stores in each category you can see that we have got 659

Holistic Assessment Model
Holistic means treating the patient as a whole. The mind, spirit, and body must be addressed when
patients present with health problems or health seeking behaviors. It is essential to incorporate
holism in my daily nursing practice, because the patient feels that I truly care about them as a
person instead of just caring for their disease. The holistic model of healthassessment must include
the patient s culture and values, family and social roles, self care behaviors, job related stress,
developmental tasks, and failures and frustration of life (Jarvis, 2012). Cultural consideration is
vital in education, compliance, and comfort of the patient.
The interview process is the most essential assessment tool to implement appropriate care of ...

Inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultations are the assessment techniques needed for a
physical exam (Jarvis, 2012). I believe that a systematic approach assessment is important, because
it influences the implementation of quality management interventions.
Having excellent communication skills will help nurses to collect data accurately. Our ability to
listen and ask questions could enable us to obtain a good patient health history. Open and honest
communication is the best way to develop a relationship with the patient. The objective data is the
information that I can perceive using my own senses. On the hand, subjective data are based on the
patient s statement. Gathering an accurate, objective and subjective data could help the health care
team to generate the plan of care and in determining the etiology of the patient s problem.
Nursing documentation can provide a better communication between the health care team who are
involved in patient s care. Writing clear and concise documentation could help with continuity of
care. I will ensure to document all the findings that I collected from the interview assessment and

Love Canal Population Health Issues
Population Health Effects: What has been the resulting effect on the health of the population
exposed at Love Canal?
Cytogentic findings:
One of the most prominent concerns regarding the industrial waste from the Love Canal was the
risk of genetic damage. A study was published in 1984 looked at the cytogenetic finds in
individuals living near the Love Canal (Heath et al., 1984). Two groups of Love Canal residents
were studied, as well as individual age and sex matched controls from another population in the
Niagara Falls area that was thought to be unexposed (Heath et al., 1984). Group 1 of the Love

increased industrial waste exposure (Austin et al., 2011). Additionally, there appears to be an
elevated risk of preterm birth among children born in the Love Canal compared to the NYS

How To Write An Essay About The Discovery Of The Sea
When he got to his console and surveyed the data he gasped at the magnitude of life it had found.
A thirty thousand feet below was a multitude of flying beasts that seemed to cover the waters as a
blanket would cover a newborn. These animals ranged in size from fist to ship size. This discovery
was awesomely unexpected. He watched as they soared almost effortlessly among the thermals,
randomly dove into the ocean and reappeared moments later mouths full of wriggling sea life.
Sitting down he did a more in depth scan and found the ocean teeming with small fish just below
the surface with larger aquatics further down. Descending slowly through the thick atmosphere the
winds picked up and started to buffett the hull making the approach a... Show more content on

normally a lesser evil than the preventable mass murder of innocent victims (Slater, Summer 2006).
With all the new legislation and measures need for the protection of the American people does
this mean we are going to become as barbaric as a foreign country? Do we really need to torture
people until they are willing to give up information? Do we need to spy on our own people? As
with any additional legislation it gives the government a broader chance of spying on its people

Clubs Vs. Casinos
Las Vegas is home to some of the most profitable clubs and casinos in the entire world. Many of
these firms manage to profit exorbitantly despite residing in markets that have some competitive
characteristics (such as fragmented industry and relatively undifferentiated products). Although
both types of firms are often very successful, there are stark differences between the two. One
significant difference between clubs and casinos is the price of alcohol. At Vegas casinos drinks
are typically very cheap (often times even complimentary), but at clubs across the street they are
quite expensive. Naturally, one might ask why this difference in prices exist. Fortunately, with a
little bit of information and the application of a few basic economic concepts the answer to this
question becomes quite apparent.
The answer to this question boils down ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The odds are in the favor of the house over the long run, particularly when it comes to games of
chance. Games like keno, roulette, and craps earn casinos millions of dollars each year. A drink
may be sold at a price lower than it cost to produce, but the casino still profits from its sale. The
alcohol does not cost the casinos much and it leads to gamblers staying longer and making poor
decisions. Games of skill (i.e. Poker) are subject to far less house advantage, but alcohol typically
neutralizes any skill a gambler may have. Casino s are well aware of this and employ price
discrimination as well; they tend to serve alcohol to naГЇve tourists rather than experienced locals.
Casinos frequently price discriminate in the first degree as they charge a different price for every
unit consumed. This practice actually leads to the marginal revenue of alcohol increasing at some
points. At a certain point the marginal revenue of alcohol diminishes as people either become
rowdy or too intoxicated to gamble, but usually the casino has already

The Contorical Analysis Of Garrett Hardin s Lifeboat Ethics
Earth is a spaceship. No single person has the authority to destroy it, waste it or use all of its
resources. There is no singular leader of the entire world, therefore there is no captain of the
spaceship. But does everyone on earth have an equal right to an equal share of its resources?
(Hardin 1).
Many are familiar with the story of the indestructible passenger liner ship, the Titanic, that sank
in 1912 after colliding with an iceberg. When the ship was sinking into the water, the passengers
were frantically in search of some form of way to save their lives. Aboard the ship, there were
estimated 2,500 passengers, with a very limited supply of lifeboats. Unfortunately, the Titanic s
crew was not appropriately trained for an evacuation crisis and did not fill the lifeboats to full
capacity. Majority of the remaining passengers fell into the freezing water, with the lifeboats
surrounding them. If the circumstances were different, the lifeboats had the potential to save
many more lives than they did that night. If that was the case, how would the passengers aboard
the lifeboat determine who to allow on, out of the large amount of drowning people in the
freezing cold water? In other words, who receives the privilege to get aboard the lifeboat? This is
a question that is asked in Garrett Hardin s article Lifeboat Ethics, the Case Against Helping the
Poor.
Garrett Hardin explains that the world is divided into thirds. One third of the world is considered
to be wealthy,

Modernism In Music
Throughout the early twentieth century, music began to take on a new role as society started to
progress and change. In society, music is an important part of culture and the forming of culture,
where people can assert and preserve their histories and experiences when facing a change in social
conditions. Modernism is defying convention to an extreme degree, disregarding boundaries
completely in rhythm and tonality, opening up doors that would eventually redefine the notion of
what constitutes music. America and Europe, pre and post WWI, both experienced drastic social
changes and technological advances which all contributed to the progression of modernism in
music. From segregation and the Great Immigration in America to the deconstruction of traditional
culture in Europe, and even the shared rise popularity in folk musicin both countries, modernism
announces itself as a prevalent and powerful voice in music which is seen through composers such
as Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Copland, and Bartok. In Europe, modernism in music is vastly seen in
Schoenberg, Stravinsky, and Bartok. At the end of the 19th century, traditional compositional rules
and techniques were proving to be more of a strain in conveying extreme shades of emotion and
meaning. While some composers decided to continue along the path of more traditional and
accepted compositions, others decided that they needed to branch off in different directions. In
London, 1902, Debussy introduced the concept of

The Life and Writing of William Faulkner Essay
The birth of the modernist movement in American literature was the result of the post World War I
social breakdown. Writers adopted a disjointed fragmented style of writing that rebelled against
traditional literature. One such writer is William Faulkner, whose individual style is characterized
by his use of stream of consciousness and writingfrom multiple points of view. World War I had a
more profound effect on society than wars prior. With new deadly weapons, like poison gas, high
death tolls, and the first occurrence of total war, shocked the world, tearing people between the
modern and the tradition. Traditional society was torn down by the destruction of the war. As with
most literary movements, writers reflect the world... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His actually education only goes as far as one year at the University of Mississippi. After leaving
Oxford and living in New Haven, Connecticut for a few years, Faulkner joined the British Royal
Flying Corps. He never served active duty, as the war ended before his training did. Faulkner
returned home and began writing poetry. But his early writing was more of the traditional style a
mix of Shakespeare, Victorian, and Edwardian. It wasn t until a trip to New Orleans in 1925 that
he began to fiddle with his writing style, after a friend encouraged him to write more Southern
based prose. His style also grew as he began reading James Joyce, a high modernist writer, and
Sigmund Freud, and also took a trip to Europe the center of modernist writing. With these
influences, Faulkner began writing novels about Southern society, with an emphasis on the
psychology of the characters. For example, in his novel The Sound and the Fury, Faulkner writes
from four different points of view; the first three sections are of each of the three brother s point of
view, and the last section is omniscient. His writing also plays with chronology, not always
following a specific timeline. The disjointedness of time is very prominent in As I Lay Dying.
About the death of a mother, the 59 inner monologues and fifteen characters make the book more

Drugs And Prescription Drug Abuse
To illustrate the magnitude of the research problem and provide a frame of reference, this section
begins with a brief overview of the increased use of pharmaceuticals and prescription drug abuse in
the US. The section continues with the relationship between illicit drugs and prescriptions,
adolescents abuse, personal and social factors; then concludes with the theoretical approach. The
Social Ecological Theory, will be applied in researching prescription drugabuse, possible influences
and protective factors in adolescents in relation to prescription drug abuse, to develop focused
intervention strategies and educational programs for this population, similar to other substances
such as tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana.
Pharmaceuticals
The utilization of prescription drugs has increased across all age groups in the US, with 50% of
Americans taking at least one prescription drug (Rice Unruh, 2016). This can be attributed to
physician induced demand, substitution of pharmaceuticals for other medical regimens,
commercialization of the products, increase in the aging population and drug insurance coverage,
and also the increase in chronic conditions. Lathan discusses the startling fact that the rate increase
of prescription drugs purchased was considerably higher in contrast to the US population growth
71% and 9% respectively (Rice Unruh, 2016, p. 264).
The total spending on pharmaceuticals reported by CMS in 2014 was an astounding $263 billion

The impact...is clear: preventing low income women, especially women of color, from making
their own decisions about what is best for their families and their lives (Albaladejo, A Witch

United Nations, international policy does not correlate to the standards set by the U.N.
International standards set by the United Nations requires states to at least provide access to
safe and legal abortion in cases of rape, incest, or threats of the life of or health of the mother
(Albaladejo, A Witch Hunt Against Poor Women,32). How is it that the United States

the United States policy makers decide that people such as an 11 year old Chilean girl...raped

can be denied access to a safe abortion and expected to be a mother. This reminded me of Hester

Deanna Kuhn Theory Of Cognitive Development
A present time, there are many developmental theories, which cover cognitive, socio emotional, and
physical. Among those theorists, for the purpose of this post, I will be considering two of them.
First, I will be reviewing the Russian psychologist Lev Vygostsky and his sociocultural theory. Next,
I will be looking at Deanna Kuhn and the Metacognitive development theory. One of the
psychologists who made a significant contribution and stimulated a lot of studies in addressing the
cultural impact in human development was Vygostsky. He introduced the sociocultural theory,
which focused on culture transmission from one generation to another. He also theorized with

The definition of metacognition has been broadened to thoughts about thoughts and affective states,
motives, intentions and the ability to consciously and deliberately monitor and regulate one s
knowledge, processes, cognitive and affective states, motives and intentions (Papaleontiou Louca,
2008). Kuhn believes that metacognition is a high level construct, which can be conceptualized in a
developmental framework. Additionally during development young children, they develop
capabilities of metaknowing that many adult do not master. Therefore in early age metacognitive
achievements serve as foundations of higher order thinking in adulthood, which include scientific
thinking (Kuhn, 2000). She believes that knowing have to have a purpose or a goal because the
simple fact of knowing what you know does not have much impact on your knowledge unless that
knowledge serves a purpose. So in this developmental framework, she suggested that there are two
terms: metastrategic knowing which refers to metaknowing about procedural knowing.
Metastrategic knowing can be then divided into metatask knowledge about task goals and
metastrategic knowledge referring to strategies a person has available to meets the goals (Kuhn,
2000). Metastrategic and metacognitive are important because they provide an explanation to as to
why cognitive development occurs or fails to occur. Additionally the metacognition development
has laid foundations for contemporary theories of learning

Why People Join Cults Analysis
Groups such as the Masons, the Church of Scientology, and political parties can be considered cults
that share different ideologies. In addition, cults have the ability to influence society in terms of
changing an individual s perspective on certain things. Furthermore, people seem to show a strong
interest in the mysteries behind cults despite the dangerous aspect of joining a cult. Over the years,
the number of individuals joining cults has increased. To understand this a bit more, Dr. Adrian
Furnham wrote an article on Psychology Today titled Why Do People Join Cults? In the article, Dr.
Furnham argues the motives behind joining a cult, the different characteristics of a cult, and the
misconceptions that individuals have in their initial encounter with a cult.
Dr. Furnham analyses the reasons why individuals join cults. In his initial assessment, he argues
that certain benefits that cults can offer such as connections, an identity, and a chance to contribute.

have led us to where we are then we are destined to repeat our often tragic and ill fated past. We
also have no way of truly making a difference in the field of mental health if we are unable to
build upon both the successes and the failures of those who have come before us (Gerig, 2014).
This paper examines some of the literature written to detail the trials and tribulations in the mental
health field from the early Greek times to presentday in the hopes of gaining some perspective on
both the pastand the present treatments of and for the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jung developed intricate theories surrounding the collective unconscious and archetypes or
archetypal images . Jung believed that in combination, the archetypes and collective unconscious
combined to directly influence human personality. These theories incorporated an aspect of culture,
religion, and spirituality that Freud s views avoided. Jung s new school of thought would come to
be known as Analytic Psychology and much like Freud this school of thought remains intact for
many modern mental health practitioners.
Many other highly notable influences on mental health and wellness exist and deserve great respect
from modern therapists, psychologists, and psychiatrists alike. Individuals such as Ivan Pavlov,
Alfred Adler, Jean Piaget, Erik Erikson, Abraham Maslow, and Carl Rogers contributed to the
mountain of fascinating theories that can now be pieced together to better help explain and care for
the human condition. Those treating the mentally ill have been given powerful tools in
understanding humanity on a very individual level, allowing for treatment of a person rather than

An Analysis Of John Cheever s The Swimmer
Snigdha Sama
Mrs. Hurtado
English I H
9 March 2016 A Tale of Riches to Rags in The Swimmer The character and intelligence of a
person is truly shown when he or she is forced to face reality. This is clearly established in The
Swimmer , a story about a man thrown off his high horse. The story starts with Neddy Merrill
and his group of wealthy socialites conversing at the Westerhazys house. Flashing back to his
Olympic days, Neddy decides to swim through bodies of water to reach his house. He calls this trail
the Lucinda River and with a lot of effort, as he isn t as fast as he was in his prime years, he
reaches his house, only to find it empty and devoid of his wife and daughters. John Cheever
cleverly brings together a seemingly random series of events and combines them. His writing style
is best explained by his own words when he says Fiction is art and art is the triumph over chaos. In
his award winning short story, The Swimmer , John Cheever uses symbolism, imagery, and
characterization to establish a seemingly silly and childish tone that evolves into a somber and
realistic mood.
Symbolism is used a lot in the establishment of the mood. One way Cheever used symbolism in
the story was the change from dawn to dusk he shows in the tale. At the beginning of the story,
Neddy Merrill says It was a fine day. In the west there was a massive stand of cumulus cloud so like
a city seen from a distance from the bow of an approaching ship that it might have a

areas that they was having trouble in also if they are ready to go to the next step like a promotion
or a raise.
Literature Review/Findings
With any company that has employee is working for them they have a standard that they must
abide by. Some companies only do performance appraisals once a year and think that it is
effective way to rate their employees on company standard and to issue compensation and
discipline if need to. This not that very effective to run a business with employees the best way is
to do quarterly performance appraisals that way if an employee needs to be reprimanded it can be
done to correct the behavior before it gets to out of hand. According to Michael Aamodt, the author

In all her novels, she is primarily a moral writer, striving to establish criteria of sound judgement and right conduct in human life. In Emma she presents her lesson so astutely and so dramatically, with such a minimum of exposition, that she places extreme demands upon the reader s perceptiveness. Emmawas her fourth novel. Lord David Cecil described it as `Jane Austens profoundest comedy . It has frequently been applauded for its `engaging, dear, delicious, idiotic heroine , moving in `a place of laughter and nonsense , and excoriated because `it does not instruct ... does not teach the modern reader... how to be and move in our world . For sixteen years Miss Taylor lived with the Woodhouse family, and she became a particular friend to Emma, in spirit more a sister. In chapter I, Miss Taylor has just been married to Mr. Weston, making what was a suitable match for both, and Emma is wondering how she will bear the change of not having Miss Taylor around. Luckily Mrs. Weston will only be half mile away. Though it was a good match, and Emma had wanted this good fortune for her governess, she could not help but feel sadness. It is necessary for a 21st century reader of Austen s work to be aware of some of the standards in society which Emma accepted as right and proper, but which Jane Austen realised were changing. Understanding of the society of the period helps you to place Emma Woodhouse and her development as a character in the context. In the early nineteenth century, arts and sciences flourished, and growing trade brought wealth into the country. The people believed at that time, that the Western civilization was at a higher level than ever before. People were optimistic and had a lot of self confidence. According to the authors, the United States Department of Agriculture spends $2.57 for a free lunch, $2.17 for a reduce price lunch and 24 cents for a paid lunch. Even though in 2007 the program cost about $9 billion, the very little of this amount went toward food. The most of the money was spent for custodial services or cafeteria s maintenance. Also, it is necessary to make a one time investment in the school kitchen, so there will be possible to cook food from fresh ingredients. Even though this project looks expensive, we will have a healthy lunch for every child. To realize this project, the Agriculture Department has to implement a new program that will allow local farmers to deliver food, especially fruits and vegetables from local farms to schools. • 6. Sternberg s Triangular Theory Of Commuality And... Commitment has proven to be an integral component within most lasting relationships. Many scholars have worked to uncover the reasoning behind what leads to increased commitment and relationship longevity. Of course, with each romantic relationship, the reasons for why an individual or a couple remains together can vary, leading to a wide variety of theories to be established to explain the components of commitment. Theories include a focus on the investment theoryof commitment, perceived relationship satisfaction, relationship alternatives, and the rewards and costs of a relationship in correlation to motivators behind commitment. The primary goal of this paper is to examine the complexities of commitment in relation to the aforementioned theories for promoting relationship longevity. In order to best understand the role of commitment within already established romantic relationships, it s necessary to look at the various theories concerning topics of commitment. First and foremost, the work of Lemieux and Hale analyze Sternberg s Triangular Theory of Love, which serves as a strong foundation for understanding the role of commitment within a romantic relationship. The aforementioned theory states that love is composed of three parts: intimacy, passion, and commitment. According to the studies pertaining to this theory, each of the three components change in prevalence throughout the course of a relationship. • 7. Comparing Picasso And Van Gogh In this essay, I will be comparing and contrasting artists Pablo Picasso and Van Gogh, considering their intentions with their artwork. Van Gogh and Picasso two of the most famous artists out there and still are to this day. Uncountable books have been published and dedicated to them and their lives and careers of being true artist. Their art has changed the way people view things and the world around them. Vincent van Gogh was one of many artists who self taught himself, who transformed the appearance of Post Impressionism incessantly. His main focuses were his paintings, which he mostly painted in oil mediums. In his time, he has produced lot of paintings, most of which were of cityscapes, figure and landscape scenery. Unlike Pablo ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The painting shows five women naked with flat figures, disintegrated planes and faces, inspired by African masks. The compacted space the figures occupy appears to project forward in jagged shards; a fiercely pointed slice of melon in the still life of fruit at the bottom of the composition teeters on an impossibly upturned table top. In this painting, Picasso makes a radical departure from traditional European painting by adaptation of Primitivism and abandonment of perspective in goodwill of a level two dimensional picture of a plane. On the other hand, Vincent van Gogh did not do any cubism work during his time as an artist, however, had more of an interest in drawing. Pablo Picasso had an interest in drawing too, but unlike his work, Vincent van Gogh s drawings are appreciated without the need for bright colours, drawings such as his depiction of figures, light and landscape. Van Gogh drew using a lot of different media, such as chalks, red pen and charcoal, although he often mixed mediums as well when it came to drawing. He drew on not just paper, but a variety of paper types, and materials. However, Van Gogh s methods of drawing are very different to Pablo Picasso s. Pablo Picasso s way of drawing can be seen as very different and rather similar at the same time compared to Vincent Van Gogh s method. • 8. The Influence of the USSR during the Cold War ..all these famous cities and the populations around them lie in the Soviet sphere and all are subject in one form or another, not only to Soviet influence but to a very high and increasing measure of control from Moscow.. (Churchill 6 7), this is a lesser known quote from Winston Churchill s famous Iron Curtain speech. This sentence, in reality, is the sentence that comes right after the famous Iron Curtain has descended across the continent quote, one that most Americans have heard in History Class. The Iron Curtain related to a period of the Cold War where the USSR controls most of the eastern half of Europe. History classes tell their students a lot about how America and the USSR were on the brink of war; nuclear weapons could have destroyed the world at any given moment, the Iron Curtain over Europe, that whole ordeal. The one thing that Social Studies classes never really covered was the effect that the USSR had on the countries it occupied, influenced, or controlled, and even in today s world, Russiastill impacts similar territory as it used to back during the Cold War. Back during the days of the USSR, the country had much control over Eastern Europe, including Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Ukraine, Belarus, Czechoslovakia, eastern Poland, Hungary, Rumania, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, and of course, Eastern Germany. One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich Analysis Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn s One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich can be seen as a testament to the spirit of the Russian people by exposing the suffering and struggles of the Gulag. Solzhenitsyn offers an authentic perspective of the hierarchy that controls the Gulag, the brutality of the weather, and the inhumane work hours. Alyoshka can be seen as a symbol for faith and religion, as his faith in God allows him to proceed through his long work day without being weighed down by the hardships of life in the Gulag. The reader understands Solzhenitsyn s experiences as a prisoner through Shukhov s experiences. Through Fetyukov, Solzhenitsyn reveals that for some prisoners, dignity is the price of survival. Solzhenitsyn s alternative narrative style exposes, to the reader, the subconscious thoughts of Shukhov and depicts his feelings towards other characters. The novelOne Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovichconveys the extent that the negative aspects, unjust suffering, and struggles in the Gulag alter the human spirit. as the characters human Spirit adapted seamlessly to the Gulag environment, remains the same or fades in the Gulag. • 17. Analysis Of Etgar Keret sWhat Of This Goldfish Would You... It is usually a challenge to choose between the devil and the deep blue sea. Ordinarily, one has to consider one s values as well as preferred consequences in order to make the better or best choice. In the short story, What of This Goldfish, Would You Wish? by Etgar Keret, Sergei Goralick faced a similar conundrum. As an aloof Russian expatriate fisherman in Jaffa, Israel, his only company is a magic three wishgranting fish. But having impulsively murdered Yonatan, Goralick had to decide whether to use his last wish to save the boy or keep his magic goldfish companion. Though he would have preferred the latter, Goralick made the better choice saving Yonatan as it matches his established humaneness and the consequences attached were more reasonable. Before he arrived at this decision, Gorelick considered covering up the murder to keep the fish. He said, Fixable... I ll just mop up the blood... When I m fishing,...I ll tie the kid to a rock and dump him in the sea. Not a chance, not in a million years, will anyone ever find him. ( lines 164 171) His stubbornness started surfacing, obstructing his sound reasoning. Goralick tried to find excuses in order not to use his last wish. For example, he said that he was saving it for something important.Goralick was ambivalent.Whilst suggesting this, he forgot how scared he was to even touch Yonatan s blood(lines 124 127). That along with his statement, He can t be dead (110 113) proves that had he chosen otherwise, Goralick would have suffered from guilt. In fact, even the goldfish asserted, You killed him, Sergei, ... but you re not a murderer. ... If, on this, you won t waste a wish, then tell me, Sergei, what is it good for? Though what immediately happened after this question was skipped, one can infer that Sergei thought thoroughly during that time. He rightfully chose to save Yonatan. His actions such the uses of his first two wishes reveal his character traits. When he heard of the critical conditions of his sister and Sveta s boy respectively, he did not hesitate to use his first two wishes to save them respectively. His sister had a fatal lung cancer; The fish undid it in an instant the words barely out of Sergei s mouth. .(lines 135 137) And ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 18. Compare And Contrast Atonement And Pride And Prejudice Throughout the years, things have been known to be similar and yet be different at the same time. A true example of this is the comparison of Atonement and Pride and Prejudice. In these two wonderful stories, comparisons can be found over subjects like class, love, war, family, as well as societal issues. It may not make sense at first as to why a reader would want to compare these two stories, but after looking at them carefully, one can come away from the comparisons and be filled with a knowledge that could end up teaching great historical lessons as well as moral lessons. It just goes to show a reader that two things can be different but, in the same way, be completely the same, and in the end, can teach important lessons. An example of a comparison which can be found between Atonement and Pride and Prejudice has to do with family. In Atonement, for example, there is Cecilia s family which is a well to do family that has learned how to be proper and sophisticated. Even at the most trying times in life, like when the twins ran off, they were still proper in the way they went about the matter. Atonement also shows the family of Robbie and his mother, and how even though they were poor, they tried their hardest to live life at its best. They were hardworking people who worked for this rich family and because they were so good, they touched the hearts of the rich family, and were able to expand their life to a degree that without Cecilia s family, they could not have done. ... Taking time off between your high school graduation and the start of college, or during college, is considered a gap year. This time off can be structured, such as traveling for volunteering. On the other hand, it can be unstructured, such as leisurely activities. Some of the most prestigious colleges in the United States encourage taking a gap year, including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Cornell. With all the new legislation and measures need for the protection of the American people does this mean we are going to become as barbaric as a foreign country? Do we really need to torture people until they are willing to give up information? Do we need to spy on our own people? As with any additional legislation it gives the government a broader chance of spying on its people and taking away a right to privacy. Slowly the people s rights are being replaced with the government s need to control. References 8th Amendment to the United States Constitution. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 29. Clubs Vs. Casinos Las Vegas is home to some of the most profitable clubs and casinos in the entire world. Many of these firms manage to profit exorbitantly despite residing in markets that have some competitive characteristics (such as fragmented industry and relatively undifferentiated products). Although both types of firms are often very successful, there are stark differences between the two. One significant difference between clubs and casinos is the price of alcohol. At Vegas casinos drinks are typically very cheap (often times even complimentary), but at clubs across the street they are quite expensive. Naturally, one might ask why this difference in prices exist. Fortunately, with a little bit of information and the application of a few basic economic concepts the answer to this question becomes quite apparent. The answer to this question boils down ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The odds are in the favor of the house over the long run, particularly when it comes to games of chance. Games like keno, roulette, and craps earn casinos millions of dollars each year. A drink may be sold at a price lower than it cost to produce, but the casino still profits from its sale. The alcohol does not cost the casinos much and it leads to gamblers staying longer and making poor decisions. Games of skill (i.e. Poker) are subject to far less house advantage, but alcohol typically neutralizes any skill a gambler may have. Casino s are well aware of this and employ price discrimination as well; they tend to serve alcohol to naГЇve tourists rather than experienced locals. Casinos frequently price discriminate in the first degree as they charge a different price for every unit consumed. This practice actually leads to the marginal revenue of alcohol increasing at some points. • 30. The Contorical Analysis Of Garrett Hardin s Lifeboat Ethics Earth is a spaceship. No single person has the authority to destroy it, waste it or use all of its resources. There is no singular leader of the entire world, therefore there is no captain of the spaceship. But does everyone on earth have an equal right to an equal share of its resources? (Hardin 1). Many are familiar with the story of the indestructible passenger liner ship, the Titanic, that sank in 1912 after colliding with an iceberg. When the ship was sinking into the water, the passengers were frantically in search of some form of way to save their lives. Aboard the ship, there were estimated 2,500 passengers, with a very limited supply of lifeboats. Unfortunately, the Titanic s crew was not appropriately trained for an evacuation crisis and did not fill the lifeboats to full capacity. Majority of the remaining passengers fell into the freezing water, with the lifeboats surrounding them. If the circumstances were different, the lifeboats had the potential to save many more lives than they did that night. If that was the case, how would the passengers aboard the lifeboat determine who to allow on, out of the large amount of drowning people in the freezing cold water? In other words, who receives the privilege to get aboard the lifeboat? This is a question that is asked in Garrett Hardin s article Lifeboat Ethics, the Case Against Helping the Poor. Garrett Hardin explains that the world is divided into thirds. One third of the world is considered to be wealthy, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Modernism In Music Throughout the early twentieth century, music began to take on a new role as society started to progress and change. In society, music is an important part of culture and the forming of culture, where people can assert and preserve their histories and experiences when facing a change in social conditions. Modernism is defying convention to an extreme degree, disregarding boundaries completely in rhythm and tonality, opening up doors that would eventually redefine the notion of what constitutes music. America and Europe, pre and post WWI, both experienced drastic social changes and technological advances which all contributed to the progression of modernism in music. From segregation and the Great Immigration in America to the deconstruction of traditional culture in Europe, and even the shared rise popularity in folk musicin both countries, modernism announces itself as a prevalent and powerful voice in music which is seen through composers such as Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Copland, and Bartok. In Europe, modernism in music is vastly seen in Schoenberg, Stravinsky, and Bartok. At the end of the 19th century, traditional compositional rules and techniques were proving to be more of a strain in conveying extreme shades of emotion and meaning. While some composers decided to continue along the path of more traditional and accepted compositions, others decided that they needed to branch off in different directions. World War I had a more profound effect on society than wars prior. It wasn t until a trip to New Orleans in 1925 that he began to fiddle with his writing style, after a friend encouraged him to write more Southern based prose. His style also grew as he began reading James Joyce, a high modernist writer, and Sigmund Freud, and also took a trip to Europe the center of modernist writing. With these influences, Faulkner began writing novels about Southern society, with an emphasis on the psychology of the characters. For example, in his novel The Sound and the Fury, Faulkner writes from four different points of view; the first three sections are of each of the three brother s point of view, and the last section is omniscient. His writing also plays with chronology, not always following a specific timeline. The disjointedness of time is very prominent in As I Lay Dying. The Social Ecological Theory, will be applied in researching prescription drugabuse, possible influences and protective factors in adolescents in relation to prescription drug abuse, to develop focused intervention strategies and educational programs for this population, similar to other substances such as tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana. Pharmaceuticals The utilization of prescription drugs has increased across all age groups in the US, with 50% of Americans taking at least one prescription drug (Rice Unruh, 2016). This can be attributed to physician induced demand, substitution of pharmaceuticals for other medical regimens, commercialization of the products, increase in the aging population and drug insurance coverage, and also the increase in chronic conditions. Lathan discusses the startling fact that the rate increase of prescription drugs purchased was considerably higher in contrast to the US population growth 71% and 9% respectively (Rice Unruh, 2016, p. 264). One of the psychologists who made a significant contribution and stimulated a lot of studies in addressing the cultural impact in human development was Vygostsky. The definition of metacognition has been broadened to thoughts about thoughts and affective states, motives, intentions and the ability to consciously and deliberately monitor and regulate one s knowledge, processes, cognitive and affective states, motives and intentions (Papaleontiou Louca, 2008). Kuhn believes that metacognition is a high level construct, which can be conceptualized in a developmental framework. Additionally during development young children, they develop capabilities of metaknowing that many adult do not master. Therefore in early age metacognitive achievements serve as foundations of higher order thinking in adulthood, which include scientific thinking (Kuhn, 2000). She believes that knowing have to have a purpose or a goal because the simple fact of knowing what you know does not have much impact on your knowledge unless that knowledge serves a purpose. So in this developmental framework, she suggested that there are two terms: metastrategic knowing which refers to metaknowing about procedural knowing. Metastrategic knowing can be then divided into metatask knowledge about task goals and metastrategic knowledge referring to strategies a person has available to meets the goals (Kuhn, 2000). Metastrategic and metacognitive are important because they provide an explanation to as to why cognitive development occurs or fails to occur. An Analysis Of John Cheever s The Swimmer Snigdha Sama Mrs. Hurtado English I H 9 March 2016 A Tale of Riches to Rags in The Swimmer The character and intelligence of a person is truly shown when he or she is forced to face reality. This is clearly established in The Swimmer , a story about a man thrown off his high horse. The story starts with Neddy Merrill and his group of wealthy socialites conversing at the Westerhazys house. Flashing back to his Olympic days, Neddy decides to swim through bodies of water to reach his house. He calls this trail the Lucinda River and with a lot of effort, as he isn t as fast as he was in his prime years, he reaches his house, only to find it empty and devoid of his wife and daughters. John Cheever cleverly brings together a seemingly random series of events and combines them. His writing style is best explained by his own words when he says Fiction is art and art is the triumph over chaos. In his award winning short story, The Swimmer , John Cheever uses symbolism, imagery, and characterization to establish a seemingly silly and childish tone that evolves into a somber and realistic mood. Symbolism is used a lot in the establishment of the mood. One way Cheever used symbolism in the story was the change from dawn to dusk he shows in the tale.
