Prefabricated buildings have been constructed and reassembled throughout history. One of the earliest documented prefab houses was the Manning Portable Cottage built in the 1800s in England. During the 1850s, hundreds of prefab buildings were shipped from Liverpool, Boston, and Singapore to be assembled in Australia. Prefabricated housing was also used widely during World War II to provide accommodations for large numbers of military personnel quickly. Examples include Quonset huts in the US and Nissen huts and Bellman Hangars in the UK. More recently, companies like McDonald's have adopted prefabricated construction techniques to build structures in only a few hours.
