DESIGN CONCEPT:
1. TOTAL 38 HOUSES LOCATED NEAR MONDAVI RIVERTO CREATE A SHARED GARDEN ALONG THE RIVER FRONT.
2. THESE VILLAS ARE THE HOLIDAY HOMES,CAN ALSO FUNCTION AS PERMANENT YEAR ROUND HOUSES.
3. THERE ARE TWO BASIC HOUSE TYPE: 2 AND 3 BEDROOMS.
4. SIMPLE CHANGES IN THE FLOOR LEVELS WITHIN THE HOUSES HELP DEFINE SPECIFIC AREA,WHILE PRESERVING
OPENNESS AND CROSS VENTILATION.
CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS:
1. BRICK BEARING WALLS.
2. FINISHED IN STUCCO AND PAINTED WHITE.
3. MEZZANIME FLOOR OF RCC
4. SURMOUNDED BY A ROOF OF WOODEN RAFTERS AND CLAY TILES.

DESIGN CONCEPT:
1. BHARAT BHAVAN IS UNIQUELY DESIGNED WITH THE COMBINATION OF
SIMPLE AND INTERESTING SHAPES.
2. CIRCULAR PLAN FORM.
3. DIVED INTO NINE COMPARTMENTS WITHIN GARDENS.
4. THREE MAIN GATES, ONE FORE PEOPLE, ONE FOR OFFICIAL AND THIRD
FOR CMAND MINISTERS.
5. ROOFS OF ALL BUILDINGS WERE COVERED THROUGH GRASS .
6. OPEN SKY COUTYARDS WERE MADE TO MANAGE CROWD LAKE
ADJACENT TO BHAVAN.
PHILOSPHY:
1. THE UNIQUE CULTURAL REQUIREMENTS AND NEEDS OF NATIVE COUNTRY.
2. COMBINATION WITH REGIONAL TRADITIONS WITH IN A MODERN
ENVIRONMENT.
3. IT IS RESPONSIVE TI THE ENVIRONMENT ,ESPECIALLY TO THE CLIMATE.

BUILDING MATERIAL :
1. RED STONE WAS USED ON THE OUTER FAÇADE OF THE BUILDING.
2. FLEMISH BOND BRICK.
3. RCC SHELLS WERE USED MASONARY THE AUDITORIUM.
4. ASHLARS STONE MASONARY WAS USED ON THE OUTER FAÇADE.
5. BRICK SAND AND EXPOSED CONCRETE.
6. THE INTERNAL FINISH IS OF MARBLE,GRANITEAND SANDSTONE.
CIRCULATION:
1. FREE FLOW CIRCULATIONWAS PROVIDED TO AVOID
ACCUMULATION AT A CERTAIN POINT.
2. NO SUCH PATTERN.OR WAY DEFINED TO KEEP PEOPLE
MOVING IN A CERTAIN PATTERN.
3. OPEN TO SKY COUTYARDS WERE PROVIDED TO KEEP ALSO
PEOPLE INVOLVED IN OUTER PART OF THE BUILDING.
OPEN AIR AMPHITHEATRE WAS ALSO MADE TO UTILISE THE
NATURAL VIEW OF AADJACENT LAKE.

5. STRUCTURE:
1. SITE OF THE BHARAT BHAVAN IS LOCATED ON THE SMALL PLATEAU REGION.
2. RETAINING WALLS WERE MADE TO AVOID THE LANDSLIDE.
3. COFFERED SLLABS WERE MADE TO AVOID THE COLUMNS.
4. OUTER FAÇADE STONE WALLS WERE 380 MM WIDE.
5. SLOPES WERE MADE FOR EASY PASSAGE FOR HANDICAPPED.
6. FLOWER BEDS WERE MADE ON THE ROOFS OF THE BUILDING.
7. VISITER ENTER AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL AND WALKED DOWN TO A PEDESTRAIN SPINE FLANKED
BY A PATTERN OF COURTYARDS.
8. EACH OF THE PART OF THE BUILDING IS DISTINCT YET FLOWS EASILY ONE ANOTHER.
9. INNERWALLS WERE 340MM WIDE PLATSTERED ON BOTH SIDES.
10. IDEAL VIEW FOR CULTURAL PERFORMANCES.
11. BORROWED GEOMETRIC PATTERNS FROM INDIAN CULTURES MAKING IT MORE RELEVANT TO
CONTEXT.
12. EACH CURVE AND SPACES DEFINES ITSELF, LINKED BY MEANDERING PATHS.

Location: Sabarmati Ashram, a suburb of Ahmedabad, India
Project year: 1963.
HOW IT ESTABLISHED?
1.ORIGINALLY ESTABLISHED IN THE KOCHRAB AREA OF
AMHEDABAD ON 25 MAY 1915.
2. THEN SHIFTED ON 17 MAY 1917 TO A BANKS OF RIVER
SABARMATI WHERE GANDHI LIVED FROM 1917 TO 1930.
3. HE BEGAN SALT MARCH IN 1930 FROM ASHRAM.
POST INDEPENDENCE, THE ASHRAM WAS CONVERTED INTO A
MEMORIAL DESIGNED BY ARCHITECT CHARLES CORREA.
4. INAUGURATED IN 1963 BY THE PRIME MINISTERS JAWARHLAL
NEHRU.
DESIGN CONCEPT:
1. PLAN OF MUSEUM HAS BEEN CAMPARED TO VILLAGE
HOUSES IN INDIA’S BANNI REGION.
2. THE MAIN CONCEPT IS THAT EACH BUILDING GROUP IN
CAUSAL MEANDRING PATTERN WITH CENTRE OF WATER
COUTYARD.
3. HE PLACED FIVE DISTINCLTY PROGRAMMED INTERIOR
SPACES WITHIN ASSYMETRICAL GRID PLAN, THE FIVE SPACES
SHOWCASE THE DIFFERENT FUNCTION.
PHILOSOPHIES:
1. IT SUCESSFULLY POTRAY LIFE OF MAHATMA GANDHI, HE TOOK THE WORDS OF MAHATMA GANDHI,” I DON’T

2. RCC CHANNELS USED WHICH ACT AS BEAMS AND AS RAINFALL CONDUITS AND ALSO PERMIT ADDITIONAL
CONSTRUCTION TO BE ADDED IN FUTURE.
3. NO GLASS WINDOWS ARE USED ,LIGHT AND VENTILATION BEING PROVIDED BY WOODEN LOUVERS.
LOAD BEARING BRICK CLOUMNS SUPPORT CONCRET CHANNELS,WHICH ARE BOTH SUPPORT OF WOODEN ROOF AND
DIRECT RAINWATER.
4. THE FOUNDATION IS CONCRETE AND IS RAISED ABOUT THE FOOT FROM THE GROUND.

1. THE SITE ON SABARMATI RIVERBANK IS THE PART OF LARGER ASHRAM COMPLEX AND IT IS INTEGRATED INTO
ITS GARDENS.
2. FIVE INTERIOR ROOMS CONTAINS THE COLLECTION OF THE MUSEUM. THE ROOMS ARE ENCLOSED BY BRICK
WALLS AND WODDEN LAUVERED SCREENS.
3. ALL THE FIVE ROOMS ARE PART OF 6 SQ MT MODULE .CORREA”S SUBTLE CHANGES OF THE ENCLOSURE ALLOW
FOR VARIETY IN THE MODULE”S LIGHTING, TEMPARATURE AND VISUAL PERMEABILITY.
4. A SQUARE, UNCOVERED, SHALLOW POOL IS LOCATED BETWEEN THE FIVE ROOMS.
ACCORDING TO VAASTU:
1. COURTYARD: AS IN VASTU PURUSHA MANDALA LORD
BHRAHMA RESIDES AND THAT IS WHY COURTARD OR WATER
BODY IS PROVIDED IN CENTRE OF THE B ULDING.
2. NORTH EAST: STUDY,MEDITATION,YOGA OR POOJA
ROOMS ARE PROVIDED INTO EARTH EAST.
3. NORTH WEST OR EAST : TOILETS,OPEN GALLERY OR
LOUVERED WINDOWS ARE PROVIDED IN THIS
DIRECTION.
4. EAST: SABARMATI RIVER FLOWS IN EAST.
5. SOUTH EAST: SNACK SHOP IS PROPOSED IN THIS
POSITION.
6. SOUTH: OFFICE PORTION IS THE PORTION SOUTH
MONSOON PROVIDES EXCELLENT VENTILATION.

11. Philosophies:
As per our understanding from the above case study we hereby
conclude that: Charles correa created climate responsive projects &
Parekh house & Ramakrishna house was the perfect implication of
his climate responsive ideology.
•Charles correa was very found of Indian heritage so he took
inspiration from various Indian monuments or heritage buildings
Bharat Bhawan is one of the example of his one such ideology .
• Concepts like vastu purush mandala & nav graha were successfully
implicated by him in his many projects One such example being
Gandhi samarak sanghralaya & Jawaharlal kala Kendra.
His major philosophies were: Incremental housing Use of local
materials for his structure Pluralism
