Rhetorical Analysis Of Blood, Toil, Tears, And Sweat
On May 13th, 1940, newly elected Prime Minister Winston Churchill delivered a historic speech titled
Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat . He discusses the necessity of an empowered Great Britain in the
shadow of World War II; as well as his confidence within the strength of the British people. This
speech s lasting impact was reinforced by it s usage of the three appeals: ethos, logos, and pathos.
These appeals address the ethical, logical, and emotional ideas and undertones within a piece.
Churchill s iconic speech truly encapsulates these three appeals within every word.
Ethos is considered to be the ethical aspect of a piece. In other words: is the information and speaker
reputable and trustworthy? This appeal is clearly demonstrated within Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat .
For example, Churchill states
In this crisis I hope I may be pardoned if I do not address the House at any length today. I hope that
any of my friends and colleagues, or former colleagues, who are affected by the political
reconstruction, will make allowance, all allowance, for any lack of ceremony ... Show more content on

He demonstrates a sense of respect for those listening to his word and those who he works with, which
creates trust in the audience and gives a reputable air to his words. Logos refers to the logic of a work,
addressing if the piece is able to be understood and makes sense. This appeal is demonstrated in the
line Let that be realized; no survival for the British Empire, no survival for all that the British Empire
has stood for (Churchill). Churchill frankly states that without action, the British Empire and its values
will crumble in the face of Nazi Germany. This clear and conscience delivery of Britain s fate is
logical and able to be understood. So in turn, the appeal logos can be

Benefits Of Intermediate Corrections
Intermediate sanctions have been a valuable aspect in the court systems. In my opinion, I believe they
have made a difference in the court process because these programs offer an alternative outcome to the
defendant s criminal case. I believe the reason it hasn t made the impact aspired by legislators is due to
sentencing issues judges face from advocates of deserved punishment believers and the fact that
handing down alternative sentences to people with different outcomes could lead to people accusing
the courts of not being equal when sentencing individuals to jail time or probation. The sanction that I
believe could be most effective would have to be community service and restitution because what
better way to punish a person than to make them actually pay for their ... Show more content on

I believe that if a person can see the harm their actions have caused towards the victim at least
nonviolent offenders, and be forced to pay restitutions to both the victim and the court, then quite
possibly it could make the individual not want to repeat their criminal actions. Other countries such as
Germany, England, Sweden and most other European countries have already taken this form of
punishment into effect leading to less of a financial burden on its citizens. In addition to community
service and restitution, I have come to the conclusion that the best form of intermediate sanctions for
juveniles would be boot camp. Juvenile offenders often lack the adult figure in their lives and tend to
repeat the bad behavior they have witnessed throughout their lives and boot camp can give them that
sense of belonging and form of discipline they so

Motivations and Methodology of Mass Murderers Essay
Introduction Mass murder is defined by the FBI as the killing of three or more people in a single event
or in the same day (Petersen Farrington, 2007). Mass murderers are complex and can be examined by
the many factors that regularly appear among them, such as violence precipitating events, weapon of
choice, and mental illnesses. The motivations and methods for committing mass murder are easily
broken down into specific groups, and through the examination of these definitions and specific cases
there is much to learn about the mind of a mass murderer.
History
Throughout history mass murder has not been a problem to the same level and in the same sense as it
is today. A related occurrence that is seen in history, which can be ... Show more content on

The event of mass murder as known today, postal workers going postal and school massacres, has
been emerging as a more regular occurrence throughout the last century (Lester, Stack, Schmidtke,
Schuller Muller, 2005). Starting with the Vietnam War era, there have been an increasing number of
mass murders, which share a causal link to the increased militarization of American Society. The
introduction of semiautomatic weapons in mainstream society gives the opportunity for explosive and
gratuitously violent events such as have been seen in recent years (Hamamoto, 2002). The increase in
graphically violent war movies and first person video games, full of violent images and massive
destruction, lend a hand in the building of a society that is hyperaware of war level violence.
Legal Concerns
The central legal concern associated with mass murder has been gun control. More specifically the
aftermath of Columbine can be examined to show the range of gun control concerns. A result of the
Columbine massacre, the most terrible mass shooting in United States history, was the media calling
for more gun control and identifying too many guns and too little control as the cause of the attack
(Kelck, 2009). It is important to note that while this attack was horrendous, it comes nowhere close to
the number of victims in

Chaucer Characters In Canterbury Tales
In Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales General Prologue , 29 pilgrims plan to journey from
London to Canterbury and back to worship at the shrine of St. Thomas a Beckett, Maryland. Each
pilgrim agreeing to tell two stories on the way there and two stories on the way back. Amongst these
character s in the General Prologue we have three estates that separate them called the; Aristocrats,
Clergy, and the Workers, each responsible for their own duties. In the following paragraphs we will be
focusing more on the estate of the Aristocrats than that of the other estates. The estate of the
Aristocrats who are uniquely made up of the Sergeant at Law, the Franklin, the Doctor of Medicine,
his Pharmacists, and the honorable Knight. Taking a look at and evaluating how the majorities actions,
dress, and behavior within the prologue reflect how they are hypocritical to the value of their estate.
While only one character truly adheres to those values of their estate and is thus worthy of respect.
The first of many of these hypocrites that we run into is the Sergeant at Law who rather than adhering
to the oath of the aristocrats of upholding justice and protecting the weak, prey s on those who are in
trouble. Seizing the land of those who were below him and having nobody even question him of his
suspicious actions as Chaucer states, So great a land buyer elsewhere was none; / He would directly
buy up the estate; / His purchase, no one could invalidate (Chaucer, 320 323). This is

What Is The Theme Of Tanjong Rhu
The film Tanjong Rhu by Boo Junfeng is a recount of the notorious arrest of twelve gay men in an
entrapment exercise in 1993. Being a conservative society, Singapore has meted out harsh
punishments against the Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgender (LGBT) community.
Singaporeans are [also] disallowed from even speaking in public places about homosexual related
issues (Oswin, 2008). This essay not only seeks to analyze this film, but also, use the Gramscian
theory of hegemony to examine the challenges faced by the Singapore state government in promoting
their ideas of a heteronormative family.
Unaware to many, Tanjong Rhu was a well known gay cruising area in Singapore during the 1990s.

Use Of Conventional Fuels ( Coal And Oil ) For The...
The use of conventional fuels (coal and oil) for the production of energy has caused detrimental
effects on the planet with the emissions of greenhouse gases. Switching most of, but hopefully
entirely, the world s population to alternative renewable energy is the only way to save Earth from the
decline of the ozone layer. The ozone layer blocks UV radiation that causes many health problems for
people and animals, but the ozone layer also aids in the regulation of the planets normal homeostasis.
Without this perfect balance life could no longer sustain as it is known to be, or even possibly not at
all. These renewable sources are far cleaner than conventional sources, which will in turn help
everyone in the world. Along with the higher ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Conventional energy sources cause damage directly to the Earth itself just to gather the oil. This large
amount of time and effort is essentially a waste when the oil gathered is used so rapidly, the earth can t
even replace it at a rate to keep up with demand. This will lead to the loss of this seemingly simple
commodity (Breede, Security and energy capture: the military perspective). The availability of the sun
is just as you see it daily. Along with that, the conversion of solar rays to usable energy does not
release any damaging greenhouse gases, unlike the beloved petroleum oil used to widely today. Where
understandably anyway we gather energy will have some sort of impact on the planet, but the impact
of the gathering, transportation, and burning (converting to usable energy) has a by far larger impact in
just about every way, compared to any form of renewable energy (Union of Concerned Scientist,
Environmental Impacts of Renewable Energy Technologies). Still with this knowledge the switch to
renewable energy has been slow to progress. So to increase availability of renewable discovery of
several different forms have been introduced to consumers, including the well known solar, wind,
geothermal but also the less common such as biomass, hydroelectric and hydrokinetic. This range of
options is to make sure that fuels should be an absolute last resort. Some

Should Fracking Be Used For Money For Traditional Sources...
This house believes that fracking should be used to compensate for traditional sources of fossil fuels
in the UK in the next 40 years. I am arguing against this motion from a social and environmental
angle. Introduction: In order to comply with the goal to cut traditional fossil fuel consumption by
2050, the UK needs to turn to alternative types of energy. Fracking is a method of extracting shale gas
from deep within the earth s surface, by injecting large quantities of water at very high pressures. This
water is mixed with chemicals, in order to free the gas by breaking down the shale within sedimentary
rocks (Goodwin 2014). These rocks are impermeable, the gas cannot flow through it, and so it needs
extracting via fracking. Currently ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fracking shouldn t be used to compensate for traditional sources of fossil fuels as the UK already
undergoes water crisis during periods with little rainfall. As a result of global warming, less frequent
but more intense precipitation events are expected to occur, preventing groundwater supplies
recharging because once the ground becomes saturated no more water can penetrate. Using millions of
gallons of water per well is likely to result in aquifer depletion, as the rate of precipitation and runoff
cannot replace the groundwater supplies used in fracking (Finelka, 2013). This could cause a
competition for water, with different resource users wanting supplies for what they deem most
important (Homme, 2014). Fracking companies will want the water for shale gas extraction but
farmers will want it for agriculture and homeowners for cooking and drinking. Using the water
supplies for fracking isn t right when water is a vital necessity for human survival, whether it is for
crop growth or drinking. We need to prioritise our water usage, and using millions of gallons of water
for shale gas extraction isn t more important than basic necessities. Fracking supporters argue recycled
wastewater or brackish water could be used rather than clean water, but this isn t always available in
the quantities needed and in 2011 this only counted for 1/5 of the water

Analysis Of A Charmed Life By Richard Harding Davis
Richard Harding Davis presents many short stories based on romance and war. His biographical
information will share that he experiences time in the war and when he writes he gives vivid
description; Therefore, you can actually picture what is going on. In one particular story, a woman
loved this man so deeply that when he was called to go to war she did not want him to go. Of course,
he went to serve his country after she mentioned that he is charmed. With being charmed he would
never die because how much she loved him. The reader s analysis of Davis s use of literary elements,
imagery, and his history are reflected in his short story, A Charmed Life . During Davis s early years,

Miss Armitage did not want him to go as she proclaimed, I merely tell you, YOU CAN T GO! My
gracious (The Literature Network). The action builds as the fighting continues but switches to
Chesterton calming Miss Armitage down by telling her that the love she has for him is like a charm.
Meaning that the charm will protect him while he is gone, like it has multiple times. Shortly after the
discussion he went off to the war. The war begins and then ended, once it ended the climax happened.
Chesterton told the general that he was leaving, the general declined him doing so at first because he
would be taking a dangerous path home. After Chesterton fought and told he was going anyways, he
began his journey (The Literature Network). The journey was delightful at first, while the moon
gleamed perfectly on the path and it was claiming outside, he was so excited to go home to his wife.
Once he got to a certain point he ran into some problems, but as it was said in the beginning of the
story he had a charmed to protect him. Davis uses multiple themes in A Charmed Life, one theme
being love and sacrifice. The reader knows that Miss Armitage and Chesterton are in love, and the
sacrifice was having to say goodbye to Chesterton while he went off to War. Davis also uses a survival
theme. As Chesterton and his horse was traveling by themselves through the night (The Literature
Network), Chesterton had to be aware of

Wayne Williams Evidence
When Wayne Williams was trialed for the death of two victims, DNA testing was not a reliable source
in courtrooms as evident (Polk, 2015). A conviction could have been rendered without the fiber
evidence in this case. The prosecution had a strong case in providing the evidence from the DNA of
the hair obtained from the crime scene. On February 13, 1981, when Patrick Baltazar s body was
found dumped down a wooded slope behind an office park (Polk, 2015). A forensic scientist
discovered two human scalp hairs inside Baltazar s shirt. The DNA sample was tested under a
microscope by both the FBI and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (Polk, 2015). The hair sample was
consistent with Wayne William s DNA. This placed William at the scene of the crime. The ... Show

Another major evidence were also dog hairs on the body of Baltazar. In 2007, the dog hair sample was
sent to a genetics laboratory at the University of California School of Veterinary Medicine of Davis
(Polk, 2010). It was confirmed that Williams German Shepherd had the same DNA sequence. The lab
reported that DNA chain could only be found in 1 out of 100 dogs (Polk, 2015). A major factor, in this
case, was multiple jurisdictions for conviction, not the forensic evidence. It was ruled and confirmed
by scientists that the hair evidence in the Baltazar murder to be the strongest of this case (Polk, 2010).
Consequently, the trial took place in Fulton County Court, one of the largest parts of Atlanta. Baltazar
s body had been found just over the line in the DeKalb County portion of Atlanta. Due to a different
jurisdiction, trying to include his death among the Fulton County charges would have raised legal
issues (Polk, 2010). The lack of this critical scientific evidence made it hard to convict Williams of
this murder and other murders in the state of

Impact Of The Dodge Plan
POST WAR JAPAN S ECONOMIC MIRACLE The Dodge Plan of 1948 In the year 1947, Cold War
unrest had started building up in Eastern Asia that prompted the United States of America to revise its
policies towards Japan in order to accelerate its economic recovery. The Dodge Plan conceived by
Joseph Dodge in 1948 was implemented as a solution to bring Japan back to its complete strength and
economic recovery. The Dodge Plan focused on resolving the serious problem of inflation and
establishing a more stable Japan through three policies. First being a balanced budget, followed by
suspension of new loans from the Reconstruction Finance Bank (this source of supply of money was
identified as the root cause of inflation), and lastly, reducing as well as completely eliminating
subsidies. The above mentioned policies were identified to aid in accelerating the Japanese economy.
Dodge s policies caused problems along the way in its implementation but it created a path for
recovery without the help of America. The Japanese were encouraged to economize and accumulate
capital through such a policy. The Korean War Boom The initial spell of the implementation of the
Dodge Plan caused Japan to enter into recession, which resulted in an increase in ... Show more

industry often influenced the growth of other industries. For instance, Japan s steel industry was
successful in improving the quality of steel used in manufacturing automobiles, due to the
technological process in the casing of parts; the automobile industry too benefited and hence could

Baz Luhrman´s Version of Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet...
Baz Luhrman´s Version of Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet
One of the characteristics of Elizabethan and also Jacobean drama is the low number of stage
directions and the lack of details they contain. As a logical consequence theatrical representations or
film versions of these ages may allow an important quantity of freedom in the performance. In other
instances stage directions and other important theatrical elements are consciously left aside in order to
create totally different visions of the original idea. That is not the case of Baz Luhrman´s version of
Romeo and Juliet filmed in 1996, which despite the numerous alterations of the original play still
retains Shakespeare s initial conception.
On the question of setting, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From all this it follows that these types of alterations produced in the setting are intended to give the
story an faster pace and variety to avoid any sign of statism that is a general tendency of commercial
films.
When dealing with characterisation it is necessary to consider that in Shakespeare s work neither the
Capulets nor the Montagues are clearly seen as good or bad characters. On the contrary, Luhrman
shows Lady and Lord Montague much more moderate and peaceful than the furious Lord Capulet and
his frivolous and unfaithful wife. The representatives of both houses who fight in 1.1 are also depicted
as good or bad characters. The Montagues wear bright and colourful clothes making jokes and having
fun. On the contrary the Capulets appear wearing dark clothes, serious and defiant and in the fancy
dress ball scene while the latter are disguised as skeletons except for Tybalt, who is characterised as
the Devil. Apart from this the Romeo appearing in the film seems to take their feelings to the limit,
and Juliet is more than fourteen years old. The aforementioned Tybalt is still being the provocative and
vindictive character whose behaviour provokes the tragic ending, however in Luhrman´s version he
regrets having killed Mercutio and this is what does not let him neither kill Romeo nor defend from
his shots. The most noticeable change affects Paris since from being the young gallant of the play he
turns into an immature and ridicule millionaire.

We played against Paraguay, strong team with very fast and vertical players, they made us play the
worst match of the championship because they develop a very solid defensive system which kept us
off their goal. The end of the game was close, Paraguayan players were exhausted so the Spain´s
coach decided to send the entire team to the offensive and we finally scored and won the match.
Germany was the next step to get in to the final. Until then, Germany had realized a very clean
championship. They really wanted to play against us to take revenge from what happened two years
ago, but the revenge will have to wait. The victory was deserved, we played a very complete game and
we beat them in all the facets of the game. Only one bump left for winning the title, Netherland. The
final was there, that was the moment that all Spanish people had waited and dreamed for decades.
They knew we were better and their head coach didn´t want us to play and dominate the game so he
proposed a very violent game full of fouls and aggressive plays which in my opinion can be qualified
as extremely violent, but we still following our philosophy of soccer and 120 minutes later Spain was

Gangster Rap
Jean Kilbourne, a media specialist, raises an interesting point in one of her lectures when she states,
The average American is exposed to 3000 advertisements per day. Yet, everyone in America still feels
personally exempt from the media. They say, I don t pay attention to ads. I just tune them out. They
have no effect on me. She later states most of the people who have said this to her were wearing
Gap™ tee shirts. Whether people realize it or not, there is a direct correlation between the media and

Because of this, the negative impact on a person s individual identity is large. We imitate practices
displayed in the media, however licentious they may be and this changes our values and our self
image, which changes our individual identity. The collective identity is also impacted because the
media, in this scenario rap, changes our paradigms about the roles people play in a society. This is
done in rap songs with the degrading of women and the encouragement of violence. As outlined here,
media in the form of modern music or rap has a negative effect on a human beings collective and
individual identity.
Next I am going to talk about advertising focused on gender roles as a form of negative media. For
women, the media is always focused on how they look. It constantly degrades women s self esteem by
telling them to be skinny, vulnerable, powerless, and silenced. In addition, the media turns women into
objects or things instead of beings, which encourages violence towards them. This teaches women it is
okay for people to use them. Men are also negatively impacted by the media as they are scrutinized for
having feminine qualities such as compassion, nurturance, cooperation, empathy, sensitivity, and good
communication skills. Men are told they must be violent, brutal, and ruthless, especially towards
women. The media s perspective on what it means

Highsmith and Hitchcock use characterization as the central means of forcing the audience to develop
a connection with the protagonists in both texts by using it to portray them as average people. The
most obvious technique used in creating an engaging picture for both characters is the consonance in
their names. Both Thomas Ripley and Norman Bates are short and average names, which are not
likely to spark an interest in the reader s mind. For this reason the reader is not able to have any
preconceived notions of either character purely on a basis of their name. In both texts, the protagonists
are shown as well spoken young men with calm exteriors. Norman Bates and Tom Ripley are
introduced as average young men, who also seems lonely and gentle, therefore the audience is forced
to develop sympathy for his character from the beginning of the texts. They both wear modest,
conservative clothing; Highsmith s first description of Tom Ripley s costume a suit and a striped tie
suggests a moderate level of formality in his costume which during the time that the book was written
(1955), would resemble the look of the everyday man. Norman Bates is introduced in pants, a

homosexuality. He was also extremely important in winning the second world war, developing the
world s first computer to combat and break the German message encrypting Enigma machine. In fact,
Winston Churchill, one of the most prominent figures of World War II, let alone the 20th century, said
that Turing made the single biggest contribution to Allied victory in the war against Nazi Germany
and its Axis partners. Without Alan Turing, the Allies wouldn t be able to know the Nazi plans and
could very likely have lost the war. Turing, too, developed the idea of ... Show more content on

He began a relationship with a man named Arnold Murray, having him over to his apartment on
frequent occasions. Murray later helped an accomplice break into Turing s house and steal many
valuable, amongst them, although thought to be unknown to the thieves, highly classified documents.
Turing reported the crime and admitted to having a sexual relationship with Murray. At the time,
homosexuality was illegal in the UK and so Turing was charged with gross indecency. He was then
given the choice of being imprisoned or chemically castrated with estrogen hormone injections,
choosing the latter. Turing s conviction also meant his security clearance was revoked and he was
barred from his cryptographic consultancy for the British government. The treatments subjected him
to years of pain and mental relapses from the hormonal imbalance, acting like a daily form of
chemical torture. His once amazing brilliance slowly began to wither as he became psychologically
traumatized from the drugs. He began to shake frequently as if he had Parkinson s disease and at one
point stabbed himself in his leg with a knife. Finally, on June 8th, 1954, Turing s cleaner found him
dead. It appeared that Turing committed suicide and poisoned himself using a cyanide laced apple. In
1966, the annual Turing Award was established and given each year to a person for technical
contributions to the computing community. It is generally viewed as important as the Nobel Prize.

Fight Terrorism without Infringing Human Rights Essay
The fight against terrorism has always raised concerns that the methods used by States may infringe
human rights. As one leading academic, Professor Martin Scheinin,[1] has said Governments have
often felt tempted to depart from ... the fundamental rights of the individual when confronted with acts
of terrorism.... [2]
Many leading world figures have stated that the fight against terrorism can be conducted without
infringing human rights. For example, Ban Ki Moon, the Secretary General of the United Nations, has
expressed the UN s commitment to a comprehensive approach to terrorism grounded in respect for
human rights and the rule of law. [3]
A recent Council of Europe publication makes it clear that there are no circumstances in which ...

It is also important to note that the assumption is that it is possible to fight terrorism without infringing
human rights, not that States actually do so in practice.
There is a lack of empirical data, i.e. research showing the prevalence of terrorism in countries with
strong human rights records as opposed to countries with poor human rights records.
There is significant judicial support for the assumption that you can fight terrorism without infringing
human rights. The European Court of Human Rights, a judicial organ which has produced the most
cogent body of international human rights law in existence, has on many occasions found that robust
actions by Governments in the fight against terrorism are perfectly lawful in human rights terms. In its
judgment in a case against Turkey where a member of a terrorist organization was shot and killed by
anti terrorist police after he shot at them, the Court held that there was no violation of the right to life.
[6] A similar finding was reached in a case where a police operation resulted in the deaths of three
terrorists in their apartment[7].
Sir Hugh Orde, who led the Police Service of Northern Ireland for seven years, accordingly has many
years of experience fighting terrorism in that jurisdiction. He has repeatedly stated his belief that
human rights compliance is not and never has been an impediment to good policing; indeed I see it as
essential to support good policing. [8]

The Culture Of Soccer Is More Than Just Articles
The culture of soccer is more than just articles written in sport pages, or rumors about players been
transferred from one club to another. It includes a bigger picture that covers many different social,
political and economic aspects of the game. In countries where the sport is not that relevant, people
refer to it as soccer. In others where the sport is very popular and has been around for a long time, it is
referred to as football. When it comes to the sport, there are two very different ideas relevant to how
people view it. In said countries where soccer is the national sport, the game is viewed as if it can
achieve anything; from having just fun with your friends to helping unite people from around the
world. In other countries where the sport is not as much popular, the game is seen as boring and is
looked down on. This paper will explore how soccer is growing at such a rapid pace despite the fact
that it can be viewed as violent and boring. Americans have become a big part of soccer in the more
recent years. They have achieved a very surprising growth in the popularity of the sport. Part of them
see soccer as boring because of the lack of goals in a game. Sometimes during a match, players create
incredible plays which do not result in goal. But there are games where there are not many great plays
nor goals resulting in some very bored viewers which can be understandable. Apart from the sport
seen sometimes as boring, it also plays an important role in political

Syrian Refugee Crisis
Syria s civil war is a really big problem in our society right now. Many of the people living there have
been killed or forced to leave the country. The issue is starting to be an immense problem for many
European countries. Many families are leaving Syria and seeking asylum in different countries such
as: Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey. These people are wanting to make new homes in these countries but
face many overwhelming struggles. The conditions of Syria are horrible. People are becoming sick
due to lack of sanitation and kids are ill treated and famished. Most kids have dropped out of school
and many children are forced to work to support their families. These families have decided that

The Unites States economy would have a positive impact if we allowed refugees to come in.
According to Studebaker, foreign born immigrants contribute almost $19,000 more in tax receipts
each decade than they consume in government benefits. This means the refugees pay for their public
services. Refugees would contribute lots of money so in return states could build new schools and
employ more teachers to teach the influx of new children. The website benjaminstudebaker.com also
stated that the Government would make a net profit of $3,000 per immigrant over the next decade for
an overall gain of $30 million. So immigrants are a positive investment for our society. Also,
immigrants have to go through a 20 month process to be admitted into the U.S. So you can assume
that these refugees are going to be safe. Probably the most important argument is that taking refugees
in is the right thing to do. According to the Jewish Journal whoever saves a life, it is considered as if
he saves an entire world. So America could be the great savior and help Syrian refugees to have a
good life and safe future. No Syrian refugee has been arrested on a terrorism charge so it would be
safe to say the threat is minimal. Also, The US owes these refugees. Without the US invasion of Iraq
in 2003, there would have been no al Qaeda in that part of the world, and no al Qaeda offshoots like
Daesh/ ISIL according to AlterNet. The U.S also has accepted almost 20,000 refugees from Iraq last
year so it is really foolish to not accept Syrians but to accept Iraqis. AlterNet also concluded that the
united states has to step up and face one of the world s great humanitarian crises. Another good reason
for America to take in Syrian refugees because the need is crucial. Most Syrians are homeless and
others have been forced to flee the country. Europe is

The Servant Labor System In Colonial America
During the seventeenth century, the colonists confronted poverty epidemic by creating the servant
labor system in which indentured servants and slaves provided labor work that directly and positively
affected the colonial economy. Although servants and slaves were the main source in keeping the
economic system of colonial America steady, they had such low social standings that Colonies and
masters had become accustomed to abusing and mistreating them. In addition, in 1669, a law had been
passed that enabled masters, free white men, to legally hunt and murder slaves if a rebellion were to
occur ( Virginia Servant and Slave Laws, in Handout Set, p. 3). This law, along with many more in
Virginia Servant and Slave Laws, allowed masters to remain dominant over servants and slaves which
historically is the root for the racial ideology of white supremacy and created countless racial equality
rebellions and movements. During this time, slaves were put up to be auctioned and once they were
sold, they lived the rest of their lives providing labor for their masters. Due to such entitlement,
masters would take advantage of it along with the laws being passed to profit off their servants and
slaves. According to a particular law that had in been passed in 1662, it states ...Be it therefore enacted
and declared... that all children borne in this country shalbe held bond [slave] or free only according to
the condition of the mother ( Virginia Servant and Slave Laws, in Handout Set, p.

Essay On The Emancipation Proclamation
In April of 1865, the President of the United States was shot in the back of the head in the middle of a
crowded theater. The audience panicked, the assassin made his escape, and the unconscious president
was carried to a cramped bedroom in a house across the street from Ford s Theatre. A few hours later,
Abraham Lincoln died. For the first time in the nation s history, a president had been assassinated. But
it was only one of the dramatic changes that shaped the United States in 1865. Four years of civil war
by far the single bloodiest conflict in American history finally drew to a close. The Union Army
victorious, politicians now faced the question of how to reunite a shattered nation. And still, another
change was emerging one that would not be decided by violence and bloodshed, but that would have
just as dramatic an effect in redefining America s social, political, and economic life. The time had
finally come to address America s original sin the legal question of slavery s abolition would finally be
resolved. Two years previously, on January 1, 1863, President Lincoln issued what we now call the
Emancipation Proclamation. Through this executive order, every enslaved person living in areas
controlled by the Confederacy was now, legally, freed. Though this action would earn Lincoln noble
nicknames like The Liberator and The Great Emancipator, the legal repercussions of the act were
ambiguous at best. Many questioned the president s authority to

Demand increased between the great wars for a better public health system. Private hospitals were too
expensive for many people with serious ailments. Public hospitals became the best place to receive the

In 1928, a compulsory health insurance scheme was suggested and turned down because the friendlies

Besides the fact that he conquered Moscow, the Russians did not surrender. Instead, they burned the
city before the French got there, so the shelter and supplies that Napoleon was counting on were
destroyed. So, his army had to retreat back to Germany, while being chased and hunted by the
Russians. The whole Russian campaign ended up as a complete failure. He lost almost all of his
500,000 men that he had started with. In 1810, he divorced Josephine and married the daughter of the
Austrian Emperor, Marie Louise, in a last attempt to improve relations. Upon his return to France, the
Prussians, Russians, Swedish, and the British started the War of Liberation against him. His army was
soon forced over the Rhine at the Battle of Leipzig. However, the allied armies did not accept the plan
and they demanded that the brother of Louis XVI, Louis XVIII, be put on the throne. Napoleon was
sent to rule the Island of Elba in 1813 with the British Navy guarding the Island. But, in 1815, he
returned to Paris and his old armies quickly gathered around him, already sick of the new king. The
allies were threatening to invade France again since they heard of the return of Napoleon, so he
quickly organized a new army and marched them into Belgium to meet the British and Prussian
armies. In Ligny, he defeated the Prussians and then marched to Waterloo to meet the British under
Wellington. At first, he was doing well in the battle.

their agreement after buying them back by Great Britain. After weeks of protest, police started getting

Multiple Sclerosis Analysis
Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, is a degenerative disease of the central nervous system. It causes the
destruction of the myelin sheath of nerve fibres. The myelin sheath is made up of protein and fatty
substances. It insulates our nerve fibers both in the central and peripheral nervous systems, and has
many other duties. The myelin around the nerve fibers prevents the conduction of electrical impulses.
Between myelin cells, there are nodes which allows the conduction of pulses. These are called the
Nodes of Ranvier. Instead of all the Sodium/Potassium channels opening one after another along the
nerve, only the ones that located at the node will open. This is called saltatory conduction because the

When learning about any disease or malfunction in human pathology, a common first question is what
is the cause of this condition? In the case of Multiple Sclerosis, this is a tough question to answer.
Simply put, the cause of multiple sclerosis is unknown.
It #39;s considered an autoimmune disease in which the body #39;s immune system attacks its own
tissues (Brassington et al, 1998). Researchers work every day to continue to get closer to finding the
cause of Multiple Sclerosis, so that we can then find a way to treat it and help those who suffer from
it. From the research outcomes we have seen so far, it seems that MS has genetic, environmental, and
immunologic variables (Brassington et al, 1998). There have also been many interesting proposals in
what the underlying cause of MS was. These possible explanations include a slow acting virus, a
delayed reaction to a common virus, or an autoimmune reaction to something which causes the body
to attack its own tissues (Brassington et al, 1998). None of those possibilities have
been confirmed undeniably yet, so in the research community, the race to find a cause, and then a
cure, is still very much

Robert Hare Without Conscience Summary
This non fictional, eye opener book, Without Conscience (New York: The Guilford Press, 1993) by
Dr. Robert Hare, is an account of his years as a prison psychologist and everyday life encounters with
psychopaths. The next 25 years he would spend conducting empirical research, which led to the
development of the answer to his question, What is the psychological makeup that give a psychopath
the power to override reality without compunction? Is it nature or nurture? Dr. Hare s quest to unravel
the true origin of these individuals, he first focused on who they are and their behaviors. He described,
clarified and captivated the personality traits and socially deviant behaviors of a psychopath.

Hare could not definitively conclude that either ones biological factors or social forces made a person
a psychopath, he rather believed it is an interplay between the both and their ability to make emotional
connection, is greatly reduced (p. 173). He affirmed that psychopaths are difficult if not impossible to
treat, because they themselves believe that they have no psychological or emotional problems. When
Dr. Hare s prison experience was over he continued his profession of psychiatry, he postulated that a
psychopath is not only for prisoners but for all people.
One of my reactions to this book was the Psychopathy Checklist, which Dr. Hare created as a tool for
discovering psychopaths are egocentric and have no feelings of empathy, guilt or remorse. They view
others as potential victims, and they leave a trail of unhappiness behind them in those who have given
in to their deceitful manipulations. Dr. Hare challenges stereotypical beliefs of psychopaths and reveal
who they really are and how he/she presents. He described a psychopath not by physical appearance,

stated that much research recently has shown there is a significant correlation between physical
activity and intelligence and healthy cognitive development and structures in children. Again, this
article states that not much research has been done, but most of the research has proven that physical
exercise helps neuropathways in the brain and rebuilding brain cells for healthier development. This is
essential for children and adolescents as they grow, and physical activity and exercise is proving to be
a huge factor determining many children and their future. A few studies, however, provide evidence
that exercise may facilitate specific types of cognitive functioning. Children s executive functions

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Revelations
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who was later also known as Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, was born in 1840 in
Russia. He was the first Russian who got an international fame due to his music in the classical
repertoire. Regarding our essay, we have chosen the song which is originally composed by
Tchaikovsky and then later in 1895, Ivanov along with Petipa revised the Swan Lake.
The choreography of Swan lake The Kirov Ballet basically focuses on is the Revelations and
Bacchanale. Revelation is the dance that I like the most, however, Baccanale is my least favorite
dance. To me, the dance symbolizes the parson s socialization in western civilization concerning roles
of gender. In the past era, there was a gesture that was separated from full embodiment and emotion,
but with the passage of time, those gestures become more recognizable and meaningful. People move
with the rhythm of the music, which is known as Dance. It is also known as art performance that
contains organized and selected movements of the human body. There are several kinds of dance such
as informal, professional performance, and ritual performance. The dance involves several moves of
the body with the music in the specific space to express emotions, feelings of joy or an idea to get
delighted by the body movements and also with the purpose to release energy.
Revelations
Revelations is my most favorite dance and it was first performed by the Alvin Ailey in American
Dance Theatre and is known as three section dance. The reason why it fascinates me a lot is that each
section of this dance focus and display distinct factors that the people (Africans Americans) affected
since the era of slavery and it is still present to fight for their rights. The theme of this dance is a unity
that is showcased in every piece that was controversial in America because of racial discrimination.
Pilgrim of Sorrow is the first section of this dance that is opened with a group of dancers. The dancers
are in harmony using their arms in alegato tempo to create angular shapes. The dancers constantly
moved and separated separately, but in the other step they would come back as one unit and become
coordinated where they extended their long arms upwards. Their hands in the air seem

children s health and mental well being. This report examines dataset on births in NYC in 2001 to
establish if there is a causal effect between nonmarital birth and low birth weight. Let us first examine
the apparent effect of mother s marital status during childbearing on infants weight by running a
simple regression analysis where we use married as a dummy variable and child s birth weight as a
dependent variable. We have the following results: Birth weight (in grams) = 3193.471 +
94.994*married The model predicts that on average, the weight of the infant at birth to be 3193.471
grams if the mother is unmarried. Also, the model predicts the baby to be on average 95 grams heavier
if the mother is married. R squared of 0.007 or 0.7% tells us that only 0.7% of the variations in birth
weight can be explained by the variation in the marital status of the mother; 99.3% of the birth weight
variations are due to other factors. This model does show the correlation between the mother s marital
status and child s birth weight; however, it is impossible to say if there is a casual effect. The results
are statistically significant at p 0.001 or p 0.1%: there is 0.1% chance to observe the

to Bordo (1989), anorexia built bodies has become the norm for women today. Most clothing stores

The Effects Of Divorce On Children And Teens
Divorce is one of the most common happenings in the world experienced by children. Most children
go through different adjustments to become comfortable with the fact that their parents are not
together anymore. Children of divorced parents are prone to lifelong effects. Seventy five to eighty
percent of children have divorced parents and twenty five percent of those children have serious
social, emotional, or psychological problems for the rest of their life. Most adults think that it is best
for parents to stay together for the sake of their child because having two parents in different
households can become difficult for the child socially and academically.
Parents value obedience as a favor when the child s actions conflict with the parents rights. Different
parents have all sorts of rules for their child in different households. It becomes difficult for the child
during a divorce because now they are needed to go by different rules in different households. Studies
show that if the child is out with the wrong parent they will most likely do drugs or bad in school.
Children and teens start to make bad decisions when they re going through their parents divorce. The
child needs discipline, The child tends to more likely do better if the parents has rules in their
household. The younger they are, the less they achieve academically. Parenting has a huge impact on
the child s whole life.

Preparation of Pure Diphenyl
Experiment 2 Date: 24 January 2006
Title : Crystallization of a Crude Sample
Objective : Preparation of pure diphenyl via crystallization of crude diphenyl dissolved in ethanol.
Structural Formula of Organic Substances Involved :
Diphenyl Ethanol
Apparatus : Round bottom flask (100 mL), measuring cylinder (50 mL), conical flask (50 mL), filter
flask, beaker (100 mL), stemless glass funnel, Hirsch funnel, capillary tube, long glass tube, watch
glass, glass vial, water condenser, retort stand, retort clamps, spatula, cork stand, fluted filter paper,
filter paper for Hirsch funnel, electronic weigh, electrothermal heater, oven, aspirator, electrothermal
device to determine melting point.

The condenser also functions to maintain the temperature throughout the heating process and thereby
maximizing the accuracy of the experimental results. The addition of boiling chips in the heating
process to dissolve the diphenyl serves to minimize the possibility of the occurrence of bumping, i.e.
sudden explosive boiling whereby large bubbles erupt from the heated solution. Instead, a steady
stream of small air bubbles is produced with the addition of the chips.
Subsequently after complete dissolving of the crude diphenyl, an additional 15 mL of ethanol is added
to ensure that all the crude diphenyl is dissolved. A small amount of decolourising charcoal is added to
the solution mixture. The decolourising charcoal serves to remove any impurities in the mixture, by
adsorbing substances responsible for colouration of the solution on its surface via its activated
properties. A small amount is used as the desired product may be adsorbed as well if a large amount is
used instead.
The mixture is filtered via a preheated stemless glass funnel immediately after boiling for 10 15
minutes. This is to prevent any early crystallization of the mixture since its crystallization temperature
is quite low. The use of preheated apparatus for filtration is also to minimize premature crystallization
of the mixture. Filtration of the mixture while it is still hot is to

The Muotte-Bailey Castle
Castles were the core of a society in the Middle Ages, acting as a fort and defense. One of the first
castles meant to as a defense fort was the motte bailey castle, one of the earliest fortifications of the
Middle Ages. The motte and bailey castle date back to the early s, . This design would have the castle
upon an elevated set of land known as the motte. The motte was surrounded by a defensive ditch
which also separated the motte from the palisade, this was known as the bailey. A bridge connected the
motte to the lower bailey, this construct was meant to guarantee that the keep, the stronghold or center
of the kingdom, was harder to get to during invasions. Surrounding the entire kingdom was a wooden

Essay on Descartes
In the Meditations, Rene Descartes attempts to doubt everything that is possible to doubt. His
uncertainty of things that existence ranges from God to himself. Then he goes on to start proving that
things do exist by first proving that he exists. After he establishes himself he can go on to establish
everything else in the world. Next he goes to prove that the mind is separate then the body. In order to
do this he must first prove he has a mind, and then prove that bodily things exist. I do agree with
Descartes that the mind is separate from the body. These are the arguments that I agree with Descartes.
In his six Meditations, only four contain his argument about corporeal things and establishing himself
as a thinking thing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Say one imagines x, imagining x equals understanding x plus being aware of x by his judgement.
Descartes says that a triangle can be imagined, but a chiliagon (thousand sided figure) can only be
understood. A peculiar sort of effort is required to imagine, beyond what is required to understand.
Now he attacks the notion of bodies existing. He says, The way of thinking that I call ‘sense give us a
reason to think bodies exist? Descartes attacks this the answer of this question in three ways: to repeat
what was formerly believed and the grounds for them, to consider why they were brought into doubt,
and to determine what must now be believed. Regarding the first point, a long list of beliefs is given:
my body, pleasurable effects, appetites, primary and secondary qualities, and different bodies. He then
goes on to say that since it seemed impossible that they came from himself, it remains that they came
from other things, and the only kind that to his mind are those which resemble the ideas themselves.
He also says the one s own body seems in a privileged position, in that one can never separate one s
self from it, and it is the seat of appetites, feelings, pleasure and pain. There is no evident connection
between feelings of hunger and the nourishment of bread. He

Privacy In George Orwell s 1984, The National Social Agency
As Marlon Brando once said, Privacy is not something that I m merely entitled to , it s an absolute
prerequisite. In George Orwell s 1984, the people of Oceania had no privacy. They were being
controlled and being monitor by a totalitarian government known as Big Brother. In today s Society,
the National Social Agency (NSA) spies on us through our phones, computers, cameras, etc. The
novel 1984 and it s telescreens are similar to the NSA. Orwell is effective in making people aware of
that issue, however, it failed to predict that today s society willingly contributes to the NSA
surveillance.
Who knew that Orwell s 1984 and today s NSA would be so alike. If you want to keep a secret you
must keep it from yourself (). This illustrates that in 1984 their privacy was limited. ... Show more

An article called The Guardian stated a study released on 14 January.... Americans often are willing to
give up some level of privacy if there is a perceived tangible benefit, at least to a point Why is that? Is
it because if we contribute to the NSA they will keep us safe. By giving them the opportunity to
invalid or privacy they could find those criminals that are doing wrong. Even though we know the
NSA spies on we still use our phones and computers etc. In orwell s 1984 Freedom is slavery . Big
Brother is the leader of Oceania. His people were slaves because they could not do anything without
him knowing. They will get punished if they did not do so. Even though the people of Oceania were
slaves they were safe. Well it is not like they had a choice right. The difference between the NSA and
1984 is that americans let the NSA spy on us and in 1984 they were force. But the difference between
that is in 1984 they were safer then the americans today because they were stricter. Freedom being
protected comes at a cost. You have to give something to get something in

Introduction Of Prenatal Care For Teenagers
Introduction to Prenatal Care for Teenagers Even though the teen pregnancy and birth rates have
dropped by one third over the past decade, teen pregnancy in the United States is a growing problem.
According to data by the National Center for Health Statistics and other official data, one in three girls
still become pregnant by the age of twenty. In the United States one million adolescent girls become
pregnant every year causing the U.S. to be the leader of the developed world in teen pregnancy. One in
four of these teen girls will have a second baby within twenty four months and in 2010, a survey
showed that only one in ten of these unwed mothers, ages fifteen to seventeen, received child support
from the father. As citizens of the United States this is a time when we all need to pull together and
help to change the future before it is too late. Many things can cause teen pregnancy but many things
can prevent it or at least slow it down such as sexual abuse, poor life circumstances, parents attitudes,
drugs and alcohol use, and exploitation by older men. Making good decisions and responsible choices
about sexual activity during the teenage years can have immediate and lasting implications for overall
health outcomes. How teenagers make decisions about relationships, abstaining or participating in sex,
and protecting themselves and others from sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy is influenced
by numerous factors. Parents, peers, the media, access to education and

Thus, the first generation, from 1949 to 1976, consisted of Mao Zedong as core, along with Zhou
Enlai, Liu Shaoqi, Zhu De, Chen Yun, Peng Dehuai, and later Lin Biao and the Gang of Four (neither
Lin nor the Gang are today considered by official discourse to be part of this generation because of
political antagonism resulting from the Cultural Revolution). These were the leaders that founded the
People s Republic of China after the Communist victory in the Chinese Civil War. They were born
between 1886 and 1907, although the Gang of Four were a distinct subgroup born 1914 to 1935. Most
were born before the demise of the Qing Dynasty (not including the Gang) and thus lived to see both
the birth and, on the mainland, the end of theRepublic of China. One characteristic of these leaders
were that they tended to be both political and military leaders. Most had some education outsideChina,

My Identity And Personal Identity
My purpose is to show my individuality and to express myself. This is for others including myself, to
see and to remind us that our identity is very complex. My parents immigrated to this country from
Mexico many years ago and they brought along their culture, which makes up a major part of my
identity. I am Mexican American and the stereotype that we have a lot of members in our family is
true, but it doesn t tell the full story. I have a lot of aunts, uncles, and cousins and I am very grateful
for them because each and every one of them has taught me important lessons that have shaped who I
am today. When all of us are together we stand out because there are so many of us and we can also
get very loud. We always know how to have a good time and we re also the life of every party. Every
Christmas eve we all get together at one of our aunt s houses and celebrate the birth of Jesus. We set
up a nacimiento, or Nativity set, made of figurines that represent the ones who were present during his
birth. We cover the set with hay, surround it with little figurines of animals and drape Christmas lights
all around the set. Then we do a rosary and commemorate the ones in our family who have passed or
could not make it. During these celebrations we always have tamales, menudo, and hot chocolate.
These foods are very important to us because most of the women in the family get together the day
before the event and prepare the food. In this time we all have time to catch up on the latest gossip and
drama that is going on in our lives. One thing that I have recently been interested in again is the
traditional Aztec dances and rituals. When I was younger I used to participate in the dances with my
mother but we had to quit due to the long and late hours of practice. I have started to go to retreats
where we spend most of our nights dancing and praying to temples and different gods. Doing this
makes me feel more connected to my ancestral roots and i feel a sense of pride. Religion plays an
important role in my life. I identify as catholic, but there are some thing that me and my family don t
follow. We don t go to church often and when we do it s only for important events. This is because we
ve had bad experiences with

Narrative-Highway Creative Writing
At the end of every work week, I looked forward to cruising Interstate Twenty. Just me, the highway,
and some banging tunes to listen to along the way. I really enjoyed the fact of not having to deal with
the stressful environment my job created. Little did I know, this particular
Friday night in November, danger lied ahead. It was an experience that I would never forget.
It was another week completed of work, and it was my turn to punch out at the time machine. I
quickly stamped my card and placed it back into the holder. Without saying goodbye to my co
workers, I did not hesitate to crank my car and speed up the main highway. As the image of the factory

After a minute of gazing forward, I noticed that the light had vanished. This puzzled me as I pulled
back into the highway.
Thirty more minutes passed and the voice spoke again. Immediately after trucks appeared stopped
directly in my line of travel. I lifted my emergency brakes and began to scream aloud.
Everything happened so quickly. Clouds of smoke filled the sky and my vehicle was turned
Horton 3 sideways. In total shock, I exited my vehicle to locate the other trucks. After a five minute
search, no vehicles were spotted in the area. What was this I exclaimed. I was frighten knowing that I
had seen something and could not find it.
Then the voice spoke again. It was clearly understandable to the ear! The words spoken were very
touching and uplifting. Do not be afraid, because I am with you was stated. The thought came to me
that it was the voice of an angel. Immediately I began to praise and shout new songs for I knew that
my encounter was genuine. That night I began a new journey. Such a one, that it would take me farther
than my favorite two hour joy ride. Presently I drive with caution and continue to tell others about this
particular evening. Unforeseen dangers are always present, but there is safety in the

Congress and the Obama Administration passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of
2009 (ARRA; P.L. 111 5). This was a $787 billion package with $286 billion of tax cuts and $501
billion of spending increases that relative to what would have happened without ARRA is estimated to
have raised real GDP between 1.5% and 4.2% in 2010 but increased real GDP by progressively
smaller amounts in the years that followed.96
In terms of extraordinary measures, Congress and the Bush Administration passed the Emergency
Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (P.L. 110 343), creating the Troubled Asset Relief Program
(TARP). TARP authorized the Treasury to use up to $700 billion to directly bolster the capital position
of banks or to remove troubled assets from bank balance sheets.
Congress was an active participant in the emergence of these policy responses and has an ongoing
interest in macroeconomic conditions. Current macroeconomic concerns include whether the
economic recovery will be sustained, reducing unemployment, speeding a return to normal output and
employment growth, and addressing government s long term debt situation.
A Sustained but Slow Economic Recovery:
The U.S. economy, as measured by real GDP growth (i.e., GDP adjusted for inflation) began to
recover in mid 2009. However, the pace of growth over the next 3½ years was slow and uneven. From
the second half of 2009 and through 2010 real GDP increased at an annualized rate of 2.5%.

What benefits and risks?
The Reasons for acquiring the 12 urban stations from Clear Channel could be the following:
Bigger African American Base: It would draw more African American listeners than any other radio
broadcaster and cover more African American households than any other media vehicle targeting the
audience. Plus those 12 stations include a media company (BET Holdings) which targeted the African

  • 2. Rhetorical Analysis Of Blood, Toil, Tears, And Sweat On May 13th, 1940, newly elected Prime Minister Winston Churchill delivered a historic speech titled Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat . He discusses the necessity of an empowered Great Britain in the shadow of World War II; as well as his confidence within the strength of the British people. This speech s lasting impact was reinforced by it s usage of the three appeals: ethos, logos, and pathos. These appeals address the ethical, logical, and emotional ideas and undertones within a piece. Churchill s iconic speech truly encapsulates these three appeals within every word. Ethos is considered to be the ethical aspect of a piece. In other words: is the information and speaker reputable and trustworthy? This appeal is clearly demonstrated within Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat . For example, Churchill states In this crisis I hope I may be pardoned if I do not address the House at any length today. I hope that any of my friends and colleagues, or former colleagues, who are affected by the political reconstruction, will make allowance, all allowance, for any lack of ceremony ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He demonstrates a sense of respect for those listening to his word and those who he works with, which creates trust in the audience and gives a reputable air to his words. Logos refers to the logic of a work, addressing if the piece is able to be understood and makes sense. This appeal is demonstrated in the line Let that be realized; no survival for the British Empire, no survival for all that the British Empire has stood for (Churchill). Churchill frankly states that without action, the British Empire and its values will crumble in the face of Nazi Germany. This clear and conscience delivery of Britain s fate is logical and able to be understood. So in turn, the appeal logos can be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Benefits Of Intermediate Corrections Intermediate sanctions have been a valuable aspect in the court systems. In my opinion, I believe they have made a difference in the court process because these programs offer an alternative outcome to the defendant s criminal case. I believe the reason it hasn t made the impact aspired by legislators is due to sentencing issues judges face from advocates of deserved punishment believers and the fact that handing down alternative sentences to people with different outcomes could lead to people accusing the courts of not being equal when sentencing individuals to jail time or probation. The sanction that I believe could be most effective would have to be community service and restitution because what better way to punish a person than to make them actually pay for their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I believe that if a person can see the harm their actions have caused towards the victim at least nonviolent offenders, and be forced to pay restitutions to both the victim and the court, then quite possibly it could make the individual not want to repeat their criminal actions. Other countries such as Germany, England, Sweden and most other European countries have already taken this form of punishment into effect leading to less of a financial burden on its citizens. In addition to community service and restitution, I have come to the conclusion that the best form of intermediate sanctions for juveniles would be boot camp. Juvenile offenders often lack the adult figure in their lives and tend to repeat the bad behavior they have witnessed throughout their lives and boot camp can give them that sense of belonging and form of discipline they so ... • 4. Motivations and Methodology of Mass Murderers Essay Introduction Mass murder is defined by the FBI as the killing of three or more people in a single event or in the same day (Petersen Farrington, 2007). Mass murderers are complex and can be examined by the many factors that regularly appear among them, such as violence precipitating events, weapon of choice, and mental illnesses. The motivations and methods for committing mass murder are easily broken down into specific groups, and through the examination of these definitions and specific cases there is much to learn about the mind of a mass murderer. History Throughout history mass murder has not been a problem to the same level and in the same sense as it is today. A related occurrence that is seen in history, which can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The event of mass murder as known today, postal workers going postal and school massacres, has been emerging as a more regular occurrence throughout the last century (Lester, Stack, Schmidtke, Schuller Muller, 2005). Starting with the Vietnam War era, there have been an increasing number of mass murders, which share a causal link to the increased militarization of American Society. The introduction of semiautomatic weapons in mainstream society gives the opportunity for explosive and gratuitously violent events such as have been seen in recent years (Hamamoto, 2002). The increase in graphically violent war movies and first person video games, full of violent images and massive destruction, lend a hand in the building of a society that is hyperaware of war level violence. Legal Concerns The central legal concern associated with mass murder has been gun control. More specifically the aftermath of Columbine can be examined to show the range of gun control concerns. A result of the Columbine massacre, the most terrible mass shooting in United States history, was the media calling for more gun control and identifying too many guns and too little control as the cause of the attack (Kelck, 2009). It is important to note that while this attack was horrendous, it comes nowhere close to the number of victims in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Chaucer Characters In Canterbury Tales In Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales General Prologue , 29 pilgrims plan to journey from London to Canterbury and back to worship at the shrine of St. Thomas a Beckett, Maryland. Each pilgrim agreeing to tell two stories on the way there and two stories on the way back. Amongst these character s in the General Prologue we have three estates that separate them called the; Aristocrats, Clergy, and the Workers, each responsible for their own duties. In the following paragraphs we will be focusing more on the estate of the Aristocrats than that of the other estates. The estate of the Aristocrats who are uniquely made up of the Sergeant at Law, the Franklin, the Doctor of Medicine, his Pharmacists, and the honorable Knight. Taking a look at and evaluating how the majorities actions, dress, and behavior within the prologue reflect how they are hypocritical to the value of their estate. While only one character truly adheres to those values of their estate and is thus worthy of respect. The first of many of these hypocrites that we run into is the Sergeant at Law who rather than adhering to the oath of the aristocrats of upholding justice and protecting the weak, prey s on those who are in trouble. Seizing the land of those who were below him and having nobody even question him of his suspicious actions as Chaucer states, So great a land buyer elsewhere was none; / He would directly buy up the estate; / His purchase, no one could invalidate (Chaucer, 320 323). • 6. What Is The Theme Of Tanjong Rhu The film Tanjong Rhu by Boo Junfeng is a recount of the notorious arrest of twelve gay men in an entrapment exercise in 1993. Being a conservative society, Singapore has meted out harsh punishments against the Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgender (LGBT) community. Singaporeans are [also] disallowed from even speaking in public places about homosexual related issues (Oswin, 2008). This essay not only seeks to analyze this film, but also, use the Gramscian theory of hegemony to examine the challenges faced by the Singapore state government in promoting their ideas of a heteronormative family. • 7. Use Of Conventional Fuels ( Coal And Oil ) For The... The use of conventional fuels (coal and oil) for the production of energy has caused detrimental effects on the planet with the emissions of greenhouse gases. Switching most of, but hopefully entirely, the world s population to alternative renewable energy is the only way to save Earth from the decline of the ozone layer. The ozone layer blocks UV radiation that causes many health problems for people and animals, but the ozone layer also aids in the regulation of the planets normal homeostasis. Without this perfect balance life could no longer sustain as it is known to be, or even possibly not at all. These renewable sources are far cleaner than conventional sources, which will in turn help everyone in the world. Along with the higher ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Conventional energy sources cause damage directly to the Earth itself just to gather the oil. This large amount of time and effort is essentially a waste when the oil gathered is used so rapidly, the earth can t even replace it at a rate to keep up with demand. This will lead to the loss of this seemingly simple commodity (Breede, Security and energy capture: the military perspective). The availability of the sun is just as you see it daily. Along with that, the conversion of solar rays to usable energy does not release any damaging greenhouse gases, unlike the beloved petroleum oil used to widely today. Where understandably anyway we gather energy will have some sort of impact on the planet, but the impact of the gathering, transportation, and burning (converting to usable energy) has a by far larger impact in just about every way, compared to any form of renewable energy (Union of Concerned Scientist, Environmental Impacts of Renewable Energy Technologies). Still with this knowledge the switch to renewable energy has been slow to progress. So to increase availability of renewable discovery of several different forms have been introduced to consumers, including the well known solar, wind, geothermal but also the less common such as biomass, hydroelectric and hydrokinetic. This range of options is to make sure that fuels should be an absolute last resort. Some ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Should Fracking Be Used For Money For Traditional Sources... This house believes that fracking should be used to compensate for traditional sources of fossil fuels in the UK in the next 40 years. I am arguing against this motion from a social and environmental angle. Introduction: In order to comply with the goal to cut traditional fossil fuel consumption by 2050, the UK needs to turn to alternative types of energy. Fracking is a method of extracting shale gas from deep within the earth s surface, by injecting large quantities of water at very high pressures. This water is mixed with chemicals, in order to free the gas by breaking down the shale within sedimentary rocks (Goodwin 2014). These rocks are impermeable, the gas cannot flow through it, and so it needs extracting via fracking. Currently ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fracking shouldn t be used to compensate for traditional sources of fossil fuels as the UK already undergoes water crisis during periods with little rainfall. As a result of global warming, less frequent but more intense precipitation events are expected to occur, preventing groundwater supplies recharging because once the ground becomes saturated no more water can penetrate. Using millions of gallons of water per well is likely to result in aquifer depletion, as the rate of precipitation and runoff cannot replace the groundwater supplies used in fracking (Finelka, 2013). This could cause a competition for water, with different resource users wanting supplies for what they deem most important (Homme, 2014). Fracking companies will want the water for shale gas extraction but farmers will want it for agriculture and homeowners for cooking and drinking. Using the water supplies for fracking isn t right when water is a vital necessity for human survival, whether it is for crop growth or drinking. We need to prioritise our water usage, and using millions of gallons of water for shale gas extraction isn t more important than basic necessities. Fracking supporters argue recycled wastewater or brackish water could be used rather than clean water, but this isn t always available in the quantities needed and in 2011 this only counted for 1/5 of the water ... • 9. Analysis Of A Charmed Life By Richard Harding Davis Richard Harding Davis presents many short stories based on romance and war. His biographical information will share that he experiences time in the war and when he writes he gives vivid description; Therefore, you can actually picture what is going on. In one particular story, a woman loved this man so deeply that when he was called to go to war she did not want him to go. Of course, he went to serve his country after she mentioned that he is charmed. With being charmed he would never die because how much she loved him. The action builds as the fighting continues but switches to Chesterton calming Miss Armitage down by telling her that the love she has for him is like a charm. Meaning that the charm will protect him while he is gone, like it has multiple times. Shortly after the discussion he went off to the war. The war begins and then ended, once it ended the climax happened. Chesterton told the general that he was leaving, the general declined him doing so at first because he would be taking a dangerous path home. After Chesterton fought and told he was going anyways, he began his journey (The Literature Network). The journey was delightful at first, while the moon gleamed perfectly on the path and it was claiming outside, he was so excited to go home to his wife. Once he got to a certain point he ran into some problems, but as it was said in the beginning of the story he had a charmed to protect him. Davis uses multiple themes in A Charmed Life, one theme being love and sacrifice. The reader knows that Miss Armitage and Chesterton are in love, and the sacrifice was having to say goodbye to Chesterton while he went off to War. Davis also uses a survival theme. • 10. Wayne Williams Evidence When Wayne Williams was trialed for the death of two victims, DNA testing was not a reliable source in courtrooms as evident (Polk, 2015). A conviction could have been rendered without the fiber evidence in this case. The prosecution had a strong case in providing the evidence from the DNA of the hair obtained from the crime scene. On February 13, 1981, when Patrick Baltazar s body was found dumped down a wooded slope behind an office park (Polk, 2015). A forensic scientist discovered two human scalp hairs inside Baltazar s shirt. The DNA sample was tested under a microscope by both the FBI and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (Polk, 2015). The hair sample was consistent with Wayne William s DNA. This placed William at the scene of the crime. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another major evidence were also dog hairs on the body of Baltazar. In 2007, the dog hair sample was sent to a genetics laboratory at the University of California School of Veterinary Medicine of Davis (Polk, 2010). It was confirmed that Williams German Shepherd had the same DNA sequence. The lab reported that DNA chain could only be found in 1 out of 100 dogs (Polk, 2015). A major factor, in this case, was multiple jurisdictions for conviction, not the forensic evidence. It was ruled and confirmed by scientists that the hair evidence in the Baltazar murder to be the strongest of this case (Polk, 2010). Consequently, the trial took place in Fulton County Court, one of the largest parts of Atlanta. Baltazar s body had been found just over the line in the DeKalb County portion of Atlanta. Due to a different jurisdiction, trying to include his death among the Fulton County charges would have raised legal issues (Polk, 2010). • 11. Impact Of The Dodge Plan POST WAR JAPAN S ECONOMIC MIRACLE The Dodge Plan of 1948 In the year 1947, Cold War unrest had started building up in Eastern Asia that prompted the United States of America to revise its policies towards Japan in order to accelerate its economic recovery. The Dodge Plan conceived by Joseph Dodge in 1948 was implemented as a solution to bring Japan back to its complete strength and economic recovery. The Dodge Plan focused on resolving the serious problem of inflation and establishing a more stable Japan through three policies. First being a balanced budget, followed by suspension of new loans from the Reconstruction Finance Bank (this source of supply of money was identified as the root cause of inflation), and lastly, reducing as well as completely eliminating subsidies. The above mentioned policies were identified to aid in accelerating the Japanese economy. Dodge s policies caused problems along the way in its implementation but it created a path for recovery without the help of America. The Japanese were encouraged to economize and accumulate capital through such a policy. For instance, Japan s steel industry was successful in improving the quality of steel used in manufacturing automobiles, due to the technological process in the casing of parts; the automobile industry too benefited and hence could reach a level where it could compete with its international ... • 12. Baz Luhrman´s Version of Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet... Baz Luhrman´s Version of Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet One of the characteristics of Elizabethan and also Jacobean drama is the low number of stage directions and the lack of details they contain. As a logical consequence theatrical representations or film versions of these ages may allow an important quantity of freedom in the performance. In other instances stage directions and other important theatrical elements are consciously left aside in order to create totally different visions of the original idea. That is not the case of Baz Luhrman´s version of Romeo and Juliet filmed in 1996, which despite the numerous alterations of the original play still retains Shakespeare s initial conception. On the question of setting, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From all this it follows that these types of alterations produced in the setting are intended to give the story an faster pace and variety to avoid any sign of statism that is a general tendency of commercial films. When dealing with characterisation it is necessary to consider that in Shakespeare s work neither the Capulets nor the Montagues are clearly seen as good or bad characters. On the contrary, Luhrman shows Lady and Lord Montague much more moderate and peaceful than the furious Lord Capulet and his frivolous and unfaithful wife. The representatives of both houses who fight in 1.1 are also depicted as good or bad characters. The Montagues wear bright and colourful clothes making jokes and having fun. On the contrary the Capulets appear wearing dark clothes, serious and defiant and in the fancy dress ball scene while the latter are disguised as skeletons except for Tybalt, who is characterised as the Devil. Apart from this the Romeo appearing in the film seems to take their feelings to the limit, and Juliet is more than fourteen years old. The aforementioned Tybalt is still being the provocative and vindictive character whose behaviour provokes the tragic ending, however in Luhrman´s version he regrets having killed Mercutio and this is what does not let him neither kill Romeo nor defend from his shots. The most noticeable change affects Paris since from being the young gallant of the play he turns into an immature and ridicule millionaire. On the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That was a day I would never forget because we became world champions for the first time in our history thanks to a goal of Andres Iniesta during the overtime in the minute 116. But to get to the final we had to suffer a lot. Germany was the next step to get in to the final. Until then, Germany had realized a very clean championship. They really wanted to play against us to take revenge from what happened two years ago, but the revenge will have to wait. Highsmith and Hitchcock use characterization as the central means of forcing the audience to develop a connection with the protagonists in both texts by using it to portray them as average people. The most obvious technique used in creating an engaging picture for both characters is the consonance in their names. Both Thomas Ripley and Norman Bates are short and average names, which are not likely to spark an interest in the reader s mind. For this reason the reader is not able to have any preconceived notions of either character purely on a basis of their name. In both texts, the protagonists are shown as well spoken young men with calm exteriors. Norman Bates and Tom Ripley are introduced as average young men, who also seems lonely and gentle, therefore the audience is forced to develop sympathy for his character from the beginning of the texts. There is a lack of empirical data, i.e. research showing the prevalence of terrorism in countries with strong human rights records as opposed to countries with poor human rights records. There is significant judicial support for the assumption that you can fight terrorism without infringing human rights. The European Court of Human Rights, a judicial organ which has produced the most cogent body of international human rights law in existence, has on many occasions found that robust actions by Governments in the fight against terrorism are perfectly lawful in human rights terms. In its judgment in a case against Turkey where a member of a terrorist organization was shot and killed by anti terrorist police after he shot at them, the Court held that there was no violation of the right to life. [6] A similar finding was reached in a case where a police operation resulted in the deaths of three terrorists in their apartment[7]. Sir Hugh Orde, who led the Police Service of Northern Ireland for seven years, accordingly has many years of experience fighting terrorism in that jurisdiction. He has repeatedly stated his belief that human rights compliance is not and never has been an impediment to good policing; indeed I see it as essential to support good policing. [8] However, we ... Refugees would contribute lots of money so in return states could build new schools and employ more teachers to teach the influx of new children. The website benjaminstudebaker.com also stated that the Government would make a net profit of $3,000 per immigrant over the next decade for an overall gain of $30 million. So immigrants are a positive investment for our society. Also, immigrants have to go through a 20 month process to be admitted into the U.S. So you can assume that these refugees are going to be safe. The Servant Labor System In Colonial America During the seventeenth century, the colonists confronted poverty epidemic by creating the servant labor system in which indentured servants and slaves provided labor work that directly and positively affected the colonial economy. Although servants and slaves were the main source in keeping the economic system of colonial America steady, they had such low social standings that Colonies and masters had become accustomed to abusing and mistreating them. In addition, in 1669, a law had been passed that enabled masters, free white men, to legally hunt and murder slaves if a rebellion were to occur ( Virginia Servant and Slave Laws, in Handout Set, p. 3). Outsourcing assists businesses to concentrate on core competencies, increase performance, diminish capital investment expenses, and realize increased revenues (Ghodeswar Vaidyanathan, 2008). Any form of fraud or corruption in the selection or management of outsourcing arrangements is inefficacious (ACFE, 2006). Corruption schemes such as conflicts of interest, ... After weeks of protest, police started getting violent, using tear gas, and sticks, as well as arresting the protesters. The myelin sheath is made up of protein and fatty substances. It insulates our nerve fibers both in the central and peripheral nervous systems, and has many other duties. The myelin around the nerve fibers prevents the conduction of electrical impulses. Between myelin cells, there are nodes which allows the conduction of pulses. These are called the Nodes of Ranvier. Instead of all the Sodium/Potassium channels opening one after another along the nerve, only the ones that located at the node will open. This is called saltatory conduction because the propagation of the action potential travels through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When learning about any disease or malfunction in human pathology, a common first question is what is the cause of this condition? In the case of Multiple Sclerosis, this is a tough question to answer. Simply put, the cause of multiple sclerosis is unknown. It #39;s considered an autoimmune disease in which the body #39;s immune system attacks its own tissues (Brassington et al, 1998). Researchers work every day to continue to get closer to finding the cause of Multiple Sclerosis, so that we can then find a way to treat it and help those who suffer from it. From the research outcomes we have seen so far, it seems that MS has genetic, environmental, and immunologic variables (Brassington et al, 1998). There have also been many interesting proposals in what the underlying cause of MS was. These possible explanations include a slow acting virus, a delayed reaction to a common virus, or an autoimmune reaction to something which causes the body to attack its own tissues (Brassington et al, 1998). None of those possibilities have been confirmed undeniably yet, so in the research community, the race to find a cause, and then a cure, is still very much ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Robert Hare Without Conscience Summary This non fictional, eye opener book, Without Conscience (New York: The Guilford Press, 1993) by Dr. Robert Hare, is an account of his years as a prison psychologist and everyday life encounters with psychopaths. The next 25 years he would spend conducting empirical research, which led to the development of the answer to his question, What is the psychological makeup that give a psychopath the power to override reality without compunction? Is it nature or nurture? Dr. Hare s quest to unravel the true origin of these individuals, he first focused on who they are and their behaviors. He described, clarified and captivated the personality traits and socially deviant behaviors of a psychopath. When Dr. Hare s prison experience was over he continued his profession of psychiatry, he postulated that a psychopath is not only for prisoners but for all people. One of my reactions to this book was the Psychopathy Checklist, which Dr. Hare created as a tool for discovering psychopaths are egocentric and have no feelings of empathy, guilt or remorse. They view others as potential victims, and they leave a trail of unhappiness behind them in those who have given in to their deceitful manipulations. Regarding our essay, we have chosen the song which is originally composed by Tchaikovsky and then later in 1895, Ivanov along with Petipa revised the Swan Lake. The choreography of Swan lake The Kirov Ballet basically focuses on is the Revelations and Bacchanale. Revelation is the dance that I like the most, however, Baccanale is my least favorite dance. To me, the dance symbolizes the parson s socialization in western civilization concerning roles of gender. In the past era, there was a gesture that was separated from full embodiment and emotion, but with the passage of time, those gestures become more recognizable and meaningful. People move with the rhythm of the music, which is known as Dance. It is also known as art performance that contains organized and selected movements of the human body. There are several kinds of dance such as informal, professional performance, and ritual performance. The dance involves several moves of the body with the music in the specific space to express emotions, feelings of joy or an idea to get delighted by the body movements and also with the purpose to release energy. Revelations Revelations is my most favorite dance and it was first performed by the Alvin Ailey in American Dance Theatre and is known as three section dance. The reason why it fascinates me a lot is that each section of this dance focus and display distinct factors that the people (Africans Americans) affected since the era of slavery and it is still present to fight for their rights. The theme of this dance is a unity that is showcased in every piece that was controversial in America because of racial discrimination. Pilgrim of Sorrow is the first section of this dance that is opened with a group of dancers. The dancers are in harmony using their arms in alegato tempo to create angular shapes. • 38. A Causal Effect Of Mother s Marital Status On Child s... Is there a causal effect of mother s marital status on child s birth weight? Childbearing among unmarried women has been the subject of intense public policy and public health concern for decades, much of it reflecting concerns about the impact of family structure and the economic security on children s health and mental well being. This report examines dataset on births in NYC in 2001 to establish if there is a causal effect between nonmarital birth and low birth weight. Let us first examine the apparent effect of mother s marital status during childbearing on infants weight by running a simple regression analysis where we use married as a dummy variable and child s birth weight as a dependent variable. We have the following results: Birth weight (in grams) = 3193.471 + 94.994*married The model predicts that on average, the weight of the infant at birth to be 3193.471 grams if the mother is unmarried. Also, the model predicts the baby to be on average 95 grams heavier if the mother is married. R squared of 0.007 or 0.7% tells us that only 0.7% of the variations in birth weight can be explained by the variation in the marital status of the mother; 99.3% of the birth weight variations are due to other factors. This model does show the correlation between the mother s marital status and child s birth weight; however, it is impossible to say if there is a casual effect. The results are statistically significant at p 0.001 or p 0.1%: there is 0.1% chance to observe the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Instead, a steady stream of small air bubbles is produced with the addition of the chips. My parents immigrated to this country from Mexico many years ago and they brought along their culture, which makes up a major part of my identity. I am Mexican American and the stereotype that we have a lot of members in our family is true, but it doesn t tell the full story. I have a lot of aunts, uncles, and cousins and I am very grateful for them because each and every one of them has taught me important lessons that have shaped who I am today. When all of us are together we stand out because there are so many of us and we can also get very loud. We always know how to have a good time and we re also the life of every party. Every Christmas eve we all get together at one of our aunt s houses and celebrate the birth of Jesus. We set up a nacimiento, or Nativity set, made of figurines that represent the ones who were present during his birth. We cover the set with hay, surround it with little figurines of animals and drape Christmas lights all around the set. Then we do a rosary and commemorate the ones in our family who have passed or could not make it. During these celebrations we always have tamales, menudo, and hot chocolate. These foods are very important to us because most of the women in the family get together the day before the event and prepare the food. In this time we all have time to catch up on the latest gossip and drama that is going on in our lives. One thing that I have recently been interested in again is the traditional Aztec dances and rituals.
