2. Private Peaceful Comparative Essay
The novel Private Peaceful and the short story The Best Christmas Present in the World are both by
Michael Morpurgo, however the author is not the only thing that connects the two. When looking at
these stories you realise just how similar they are, mainly the characters, plot and many of the themes.
However, these stories are also very different, and the main characters face challenges that are
different to each other yet hold just as much importance. Tommo, our narrator in Private Peaceful,
faces difficult times when he is forced to leave his loved ones to fight for his country in the First
World War. Jim Macpherson is the protagonist in The Best Christmas Present in the World and also
has to leave his friends and family for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When looking at the latter, it does seem like Connie and Jim almost reflect Molly and Charlie in their
loss and relationship with each other. However it does seem, at a glance at least, that Private Peaceful
is the sadder of the pair. When looking deeper though, and thinking about Molly, you do realise that,
yes, she does loose her love but at least she has a support network. Connie however, didn t have any of
that and therefore never fully got over the loss of her husband, as it seems that he was her foundation
and when he left she is, as it says in the book is a bit confused and She has no family you know. No
one visits . It is clear that these stories are tales of love, loss and sorrow and hold many emotions
between their pages. They teach us of the way life was in the war, how terrible the danger was in
Private Peaceful but also how incredible the peace felt in The Best Christmas Present in the World ,
even if for only a day. They do have their differences but still give us the message of hope and to
treasure what we have, as we may not have it for much longer. They have varied plots, themes and
characters but are overall very close in many aspects, such as the sacrifices they had to

3. Beyond Lies The Wub Essay
Greatness is a road leading toward the unknown (Charles de Gaulle). This melodramatic, cheesy quote
perfectly describes author, Philip K. Dick s writing in his short story Beyond Lies the Wub. Philip K.
Dick was a unique author that explored an unknown part of science fiction and ultimately created
many award winning and interactive short stories. Beyond Lies the Wub was written in 1952, the same
era of the Cold War. Similar to men who were setting off to fight stalked up on food, clothes and
machinery, Franco, a pragmatic captain in this short story loaded up on live animals before their
departure to Mars. One of the animals is an enormous pig creature known by the natives as a Wub.
The crew later finds out this creature is so intelligent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since Beyond Lies The Wub has multiple unclear meanings and messages, readers may be left
unpleased. However, Dick may have intentionally created this confusion so that each reader has a
unique experience in how they discern the text. One interpretation of Beyond Lies the Wub is that
Franco may have been punished for his wrongdoings. Even though the crew was not fully supportive
and the Wub warned him about killing him, he still slaughtered the innocent animal. Another
interpretation of the text could be hinting that Philip K. Dick was vegetarian and thinks those who
consume meat should be punished. However, Dick s multiple comments throughout the story about
the concern of the crews starvation suggest Franco s intention was to feed the deprived crew. Dick s
common tactic of ending his mysterious, vague short stories is by implementing an adjacent character
who is just as confused as the audience. The story ends very abruptly leaving Peterson torn between
two sides: whether his captain was just trying to feed his crew or was the innocent animal who
deemed himself worthy of living through his knowledge living through the Captain as a punishment.
By Dick ending the story before the audience receives any more information about how Franco is now
the wub and how Peterson reacts, allows the audience to interpret it for themselves. Ultimately we
must ask ourselves, is all the confusion and lack of clarity making Dick s stories truly effective? I
think

4. The Assassination Of President John F. Kennedy
Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable. JFK was a
man defined by his morality, however his appeasing methods were perceived by some as a weakness,
ultimately preluding his inescapable death. It is to a highly significant extent that the CIA was
responsible for the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, as contrasting ideologies, acting as
motive, integrated with extensive influence and power, enabled the CIA to eliminate JFK, to infiltrate
their own desired means of governing. as an impediment of desired governing. Uncertainty of
motives, corresponding with former connections to the CIA, generated hesitation for the solitary
conviction of Lee Harvey Oswald. Complications concerning domestic and international incidents
instigated tensions between the CIA and President Kennedy, later acting as an apparent motive cause
for his assassination. Discrepancies regarding eye witness statements, forensic and photographic
evidence emerged with the final report issued by the Warren Commission; this resulted in concern and
uncertainty as to the quality of investigation into the President s death, highlighting the occurrence of
foul play by the CIA.
The CIA had a very significant role in the assassination of JFK, as, despite undisputed evidence
indicating Lee Harvey Oswald s involvement, it is evident he was exploited in a larger, more elaborate
scheme. Lee Harvey Oswald was undeniably a patsy for the CIA, acting as a significant

anger on how Micky changed with this news but I was also happy.
The message of this film was to show the audience not to give up during tough times in life and to
pick themeself up and work hard. The film demonstrates living in a tough neighborhood opportunities
do come to those who believe in themselves. Avildsen ( Film Director), Shows up though Rocky

Kirschner, who had attracted the above individuals based on his compelling vision that they would be
doing something completely different and of vital importance, believed that the group would be most
effective if given extensive freedom and encouragement. The only things he required from it was a
biweekly progress report, so that the executive committee could be kept abreast of its activities, and a
monthly financial report. Group members were free to work as they wished; as long as they focused
their energies on coming up with viable ideas for durable, multipurpose children s furniture products
those consumers would consider a good value. The only structure he imposed was having one person
report directly to him. Thus, he appointed Kane the group head, in large measure because Kane was
the first to be hired, but also because he had made such a positive impression on him. When the eight
people began work at Merit, they did not know each other. Given Kirschner s rather broad mandate,
they also did not know what they would be expected to do on a daily basis. They soon discovered that
they had different ideas not only about what they should do, but also about how they should approach
their work. Those like Jacobson, who had worked in large corporate environments in the past, were
the most outspoken about how the group should approach its task. He was a proponent of a more

11. Detroit Tops Forbes List Of The Most Dangerous Cities
Detroit tops Forbes list of the Most Dangerous Cities this year for the fifth year in a row. What is
encouraging is that the crime rate in the Motor City actually declined last year, despite devestating
financial woes that drove Detroit into the biggest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. Crime affects
the people of Detroit and the city s reputation, employment, income and education. It needs to be
contained and reduced to make Detroit prosper and make the lives of the people living there better.
Detroit had 316 murders in 2013, a rate of 45 per 100,000 people. That s the highest rate among cities
with populations over 100,000. In 2013 Detroit also reported 14,504 violent crimes. That s also the
highest per capita rate in the nation, according to the annual report. The total is comprised of rapes,
murder, robbery and aggravated assault.
The number of homicides peaked in 1974 at 714 and again in 1991 with 615. By the end of 2010, the
homicide count fell to 308 for the year with an estimated population of just over 900,000, the lowest
count and rate since 1967. However, taken in context by population, Detroit remains as a city with one
of the highest rates per capita for homicide in the United States. In April 2008, the city unveiled a
$300 million stimulus plan to create jobs and revitalize neighborhoods, financed by city bonds and
paid for by earmarking about 15% of the wagering tax. Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and Police Chief

Countless authors, all throughout time, can be seen to write about their passions, their experiences or
their opinions on a certain topic. The question has been asked: do any of these authors early life
experiences or the time setting when they grew up in have any impact on why the writer developed the
work? A range of authors and texts are being covered in this report and the content will vary from
World War One experiences to more recent times of racial segregation in America. This report has
been formed to answer questions and form relationships between authors and the reason(s) or any
influence(s) as to why the following authors have developed their work: Harper Lee, Wilfred Owens,
Ernest Hemingway. I decided to investigate the following texts: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee,
The Sentry by Wilfred Owen, To Good Guys Dead by Ernest Hemingway. If the aim is to find out
whether early life experiences of these authors or the time setting when they grew up in promoted or
influenced the development of their work, three questions must be asked for an accurate conclusion to
be drawn: How heavily did the Harper Lee s early life experiences influence her writing? Where there
any government influences that impacted on the authors writing? Why exactly did the author write the
text?

13. Passion in A Midsummer Night s Dream Essay
Passion in A Midsummer Night s Dream Shakespeare s A Midsummer Night s Dream may come off as
a simple comedy but is a complex play with many interesting aspects. Passion, a significant
characteristic, is often expressed through the play. Characters in the play show passion for different
reasons; Puck passions for mischief, Helena for Demetrius love and Bottom for theatrics, are a few of
the many examples. Passion shows much significance, being the most important characteristic in the
play. Puck is a mischievous sprite, involved with most magical events in the play. Often playing tricks
for his own enjoyment or by his master, Oberon s, commands, Puck is depicted as a young, deceptive
character. When first discovered as Robin ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being the only character, other than Bottom, to enter both the human and fairy world, the play makes
Puck to be the protagonist. While there his trickery and trouble are antagonistic in nature, his vital part
is that of a positive character, ultimately resolving all problems. Puck treats the entire idea of love as
madness, the idea Shakespeare was conveying with his trickery. Helena is portrayed as a desperate
character, her passion being for the love of Demetrius. Helena spends most of the story pursuing
Demetrius in hope of receiving any form of affection in return, only receiving affection due to magic.
While chasing Demetrius, Helena says What worser place can I beg your love, And yet a place of high
respect with me, Than to be usèd as you use your dog? (II.i.208 210) Helena, knowing demeaning
herself to the position of a dog, believes that she is not worthy enough for such authority, therefore
hoping she will be given the honour. Helena compares herself to a dog in the sense that the more
Demetrius rejects her, the harder she will try to receive any emotion from her master. Although
heartbroken by Demetrius hatred for her, Helena showers Demetrius with comments, only to be
continuously beaten down. This is explicitly shown when Helena comments on Demetrius demeanor
and is, again rejected, saying, You draw me, you hard hearted adamant; But yet you draw not iron, for

14. Analysis Of Sophistication By Sherwood Anderson And...
Both Sophistication by Sherwood Anderson and Running out of Music by Constant Squires use
symbols, conflict and character development to represent the complexity of connection. The corn field
that George Willard views and the time that Nately gives Lucinda music symbolize the fulfillment that
results from being able to depend on others. George Willard takes Helen White and wanders out into
the countryside. Together and in silence, They went along a path past a field of corn that had not yet
been cut. The wind whispered among the dry corn blades (Anderson 5). Similarly Lucinda walks back
towards her house in silence until Nately says, ...so I don t know if I can get to everything, but I ll try
hard. Let s meet here same time two weeks from today, and I ll give you what I ve got (Squires 16). In
order to become tall, a stalk of corn needs all the other corn in the field to survive. A single stalk of
corn is unable to stand by itself. In a similar manner Lucinda would not be able to grow and mature if
she did not have Nately to bring her music. Nately is like the other corn in field, supporting Lucinda
and helping her mature. If one stalk of corn tried to stand on its own, it would be blown over by the
whispered wind . The whispered wind is similar to Nately sharing music with Lucinda because Nately
is not supposed to see Lucinda, their meeting, two weeks from today , is like a whispered secret
between the two of them. As the whispered wind shares messages through the corn, Nately shares
music with Lucinda. She depends on him to meet her two weeks from today and give her music.
Lucinda depends on Nately in the same way that all the corn stalks in the field depend on the other
corn stalks to grow tall and mature. The corn in the field that George observes and the set times where
Nately gives Lucinda music represent the fulfillment that comes from being able to rely on others.
George s desire to disconnect from his past and Lucinda s desire to connect to her past represent the
struggles of remembrance. George grew up in Winesburg and he still lives there now. George does not
want to reside in Winesburg anymore, He was about to leave Winesburg to go away to some city
where he hoped to get work

In the case of Innostat, the main issue on the culture of the organization has led to a bad productivity
and has affected its effectiveness and efficiency. This portrays that Innostat has overlooked the
importance of culture which claims by Schein (2004) as powerful energy for the organization in order
to reach the goals. Hence, Innostat is now struggling to bring back its innovating edge. By referring to
the Burke Litwin Model (1992), it can be seen that there is an interconnectedness of four factors

This kind of leadership promotes a culture of dependency toward the leader, hence blocks the growth
of creativity, skill and knowledge of the employees. This is supported by the expert, Eckerts (Beer,
2006) who further states that charismatic leadership style like Jack has lose the creative energy of the
employees. In addition to that, due to this leadership style, it does not promote the culture of
cooperation, teamwork and trust between the top management and employees.
Due to this culture, the work unit climate is affected as well. It can be seen that there is a weak cross
functional collaboration among the departments since Jack s leadership. This is demonstrated by Jack,
who goes directly to R D department for new projects without considering any discussion with other
departments. Therefore, other departments do not functioning at their optimal level hence, it affects
the organization effectiveness. Besides that, it is clear that Innostat employees only working within
their own departments, and prefer to work on their achievements, hence prove that there is no
common goal among them. Apart from that, Jack s opinion on Good ideas don t need incentives, they
need passion (Beer, 2006) is one of the factors that affect the individual and organizational
performance. Jack as a leader does not put much attention on the rewards, hence it

emotionally unfulfilling life in the US in New York City and suburbs in Connecticut, to be exact. First
of all, one needs to clarify what exactly makes and antihero and what distinguishes him from other

18. The Existence Of A Renaissance
Renaissance: a word familiar to many and typically associated with the flourishing renewal of ancient
Greek and Roman ideas in sixteenth century European culture. The question is, could that be the only
renaissance? Many changes also occurred in twelfth century European intellectual and cultural life
that could signify a renaissance. Portions of secular and religious life changed to some extent and
often these changes sprouted from ancient traditions. However, to determine the existence of a
renaissance in the twelfth century, one must define the limitations of what a renaissance entails and
decide whether the changes in lay and ecclesiastic culture fulfil the description.
Great care must be taken when classifying the past and any labels must have strict definitions because
often over time word meanings get stretched to fit more than their original explanation. The word
renaissance, from the French renaissance, translates literally as rebirth but has also come to mean a
new growth of activity or interest in something . Both these definitions can be applied to certain
aspects of the twelfth century, but having two definitions seems very indefinite. People have a natural
tendency to categorize things but classifying eras in particular can get messy. This inclination may
have caused historians to place a label on the twelfth century simply because it shares a few features
with The Renaissance of the sixteenth century. Clear distinctions must be upheld to properly

The object of softball is to score runs by hitting the ball and touching all the bases without being

of four things happens: The batter gets three strikes against him/her. A strike occurs when the batter
swings at a pitch but misses it or hits it foul with less than two strikes against him/her, or when the
pitch passes through the strike zone but the batter does not swing at it. The pitcher throws four balls,

The batter reaches base safely by virtue of a hit, a fielder s choice, or a fielding error or rarer
occurrences such as catcher s or runner s interference. To get a batter out, a pitcher can record three
strikes against the batter, or a fielder can catch a batted fly ball in either fair or foul territory before it
hits the ground. If the batter hits a ground ball, he or she will be out at first base if a fielder can secure
the batted ball and throw it to the first baseman who steps on first base before the batter can do so. To
get a runner out, an infielder can tag the runner with the ball or the gloved ball while the runner is
between bases. In the case of a force out, a runner is forced to advance to the next base when there is
nowhere else for him/her to go, and he or she may be put out by any infielder who while holding the
ball steps on the base before the runner arrives there. In this case the fielder does not have to tag the
runner. A force out commonly occurs when a batter hits the ball to an infielder, who throws it or runs it
to first base before the batter can run there. When a batter hits a fair ball she may attempt to run as far
around the bases as he or she thinks possible without being tagged out by the

wheezing, and difficulty in expiration, often accompanied by coughing and feeling of constriction in
the chest. Also called bronchial asthma. Asthma is a chronic condition, and there is no cure for it. You
can consult with your doctor about how to manage it. Knowing as much as you can about the
condition, can help you understand how to live with it. Asthma affects people of all ages, more than 22
million people are known to have asthma, and about 6 million are childrenSigns and symptoms of
asthma is shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing chest tightness. People that have allergies, eczema,
or parents that have asthma are more at risk. In children more boys have asthma than girls, but in
adults more women have it than men. You want to make sure to get a lung function test done to
determine if you have asthma for sure. The symptoms are the same as to other things also, such as the

22. Goodnight Kane Monologue
I ve just claimed back my life and yes, I am opening my heart to Kane, but is it love? I don t know.
Love leaves me vulnerable, open to pain and disappointment and inevitably loss. I can t go through
that again, I won t.
Pulling the covers to my chest, I roll to my side. Goodnight Kane, I say as I fight the urge to run for
my bike.
****
The rising sun nudges my eyes open. Damn, I hate mornings. I keep forgetting to close the freaking
curtains at night and I pay for it with every sunrise.
The searing light has no apparent effect on Kane s ability to sleep. I carefully unwind my body from
his embrace and leave him to it.
Pushing away the thoughts of Kane s avowal of love last night, I take a quick shower and look through
the limited choices of clothing I have. I throw on my best pair of jeans, which basically means the

I pour two cups of coffee just as Kane comes barreling out of the bedroom, his soft, worn jeans riding
low on his hips, the top button left undone. He looks sexy as hell with his tousled hair and bare chest. I
grin as the look of concern on his face lifts to a smile when he finds me in the kitchen.
Damn, just one look at Kane and my panties are ready to drop to the floor. No one has ever affected

23. Failures Of The Populist Party
At the end of the 19th century the United States were in a time called The Gilded Age , coined by
Mark Twain; a time of mass immigration, Western settlement, and industrialization. Out of these times
emerged a political party named the Populist party, later changed to the People s party. This party
stood for the working man, like farmers and factory laborers. Though this party meant well, it did not
last long. Surviving until 1896, the Populist party eventually merged with the Democratic party. With
this being said, the Populist party was a short lived dream and failure. The Populist party, as
previously stated, stood for and supported the working class. From farmers in the west to industrial
workers in the east, the Populist party wanted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This popularity was lost due to the fact that the Populist party s previously mentioned progressive
ideas, like 8 hour work days, senators elected by the people, graduated income tax, etc., were not
popular beliefs and wants in the late 19th century. Though mostly aligned left like the Democratic
party, these ideas held the party back and led to most either choosing the Republicans or the
Democrats. Eventually in 1896 part of the Populist party dissolved and fused with the Democratic
party. The other Populists decided to continue on as their own thing and not join the Democrats; they
lasted until 1908. After the fusion with the democrats, the Populists original presidential nominee,
William Jennings Bryan, flew a new flag; that of the democrats. Unfortunately for the democrats and
the Populists that joined them, Bryan lost the election. Concerning the topic of the Populists failure,
these events played a major role in it because they weren t even the Populists anymore, they were
democrats, and those that chose to continue on under the title of the People s party didn t last much

25. The Representation Of Gender And Media
Nowadays the representation of gender in media has become very common. It is all about the
representation of phenomenally rapid change: change s in gender relation transformations in media
technologies, regulatory frameworks, content ownership and theoretical revolutions in the approaches
used to make sense of gender representations. Gender and media aims to freeze the frame, press the
pause button, or hit the refresh key to construct that how media shows social stereotypes. There are
many advertisements which influences people, the one such advertisement is of Van Heusen brand
advertising for men s wear tie. These advertisement clearly reflects gender inequality.
Since then, of course, the role of women in society and representation in advertising has come a long
way. The feminist movement in the 70s helped to break down barriers for women, leading to improved
career opportunities and more equality in the workplace and the home. We can see in the picture how a
girl is lying down near a shoe, and at the very top of it a message is written in bold whit letters keep
her where she belongs. This shows that how they have compared a woman with a shoe and the women
is without the clothes on her body which shows gender biased advertisement. These seems that they
are trying to say that women s are not equal to men. In the second half picture, at the very top it is
written that show her it is men world which is kind of reflecting the inequality s in the gender. And in

26. For Whom The Bell Tolls(term-paper)
When reading an Ernest Hemingway novel, one must try very hard to focus on the joy and
encouragement found in the work. For Whom the Bell Tolls is full of love and beauty, but is so greatly
overshadowed by this lingering feeling of doom a feeling that does not let you enjoy reading, for you
are always waiting for the let down, a chance for human nature to go horribly awry. This feeling is
broken up into three specific areas. In Ernest Hemingway s novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls, humanity
is exploited through brutal violence, unnecessary courage, and hopeless futility.

language. He is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fascists then rounded up all of her family and shot them one by one in the back of the head, letting
her live just to tell the tale to whoever tried to stop them. This forces you to try and remember that this
is just a fictional story and that things like this don t really happen in ordinary life, but the unfortunate
reality is that these things happen all the time, especially while peoples are at war. To snuff this
horrendous use of violence is much easier, but, sadly, is far from a realistic notion.
Why is there all this violence going on? Sometimes one thinks that had the hero in this story not been
so brazenly courageous, maybe the sadness and disgusting malice may not have occurred, for if you
don t start a fight you cannot get beaten up, and also, if one hides instead of shouting, he can usually
get away. Regardless, Robert Jordan must do both of the following two acts in order to cope inside
this story: build up his life to apex at one final showdown, and to trap himself in a never ending tunnel
of beatings and ultimately destruction (Frohock 167). Robert Jordan must make a final stand in For

27. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Gas Chromatography
Gas chromatography:
GC is used to separate volatile organic compounds. The use of GC for the direct analysis of intact
phospholipids are not possible because of the non volatile in nature. Therefore, most methods rely on
diacylglycerol hydrolysis by phospholipase C. This is followed by methyl trans esterification to
produce fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), which are then analyzed by GC (Tserng and Griffin, 2003).
The first application of GC fatty acids was in 1950 (Bondia Pons et al., 2004).

(1975). HPLC uses either a solid or liquid coated solid stationary phase and a liquid mobile phase.
Separation of analytes is achieved by adsorption of the analyte to the stationary phase. HPLC provides
speed, resolution, high sensitivity and specificity (Lima, 2002).
HPLC also be a lower temperature than GC methods; reducing the risk of isomerization of unsaturated
fatty acids. HPLC has an immediate advantage over TLC, because reduces the exposure of the sample
to atmospheric oxygen, reducing the risk of auto oxidation of phospholipids (Pulfer and Murphy,
2003).
Beside, separated fractions are collected for further analysis (Robins and Patton, 1986). HPLC is used
mainly for lipid class divisions; Some methods for the separation of the molecular species of a certain
class developed using reverse phase chromatography (Olsson and Salem, 1997).
However, these reverse phase HPLC methods are time consuming and provide poor resolution as a
result of the wide range of polarities that due to the different carbon chain lengths of the fatty acid
chains and degree of saturation of phospholipids. This section will discuss the components HPLC
method and optimal conditions for the analysis

Overall diversity in college campuses has been held back with the SAT because of its unfair standards.

Male homoeroticism in Plato s Symposium and the Greek lyric poets: Complimentary or

Images of male homosocial and homoerotic relations pervade Athenian culture. From plays to poetry
and jugs to the justice system one can find these relations represented pictorially and in words. But do
all these images align with each other or are there irreconcilable differences between them? To look at
this question we will take two small pieces of culture, a philosophical treatise, Plato s Symposium and
the lyric poetry of Theognis and Anacreon.

behavior has been repaid with infidelity and ?slutting around.? The erastes feels betrayed and regretful
that this boy he cares for appears headed for dangerous risks implying htta he expects honorable
behavior. But this is not the end of Phaedras? praise for homoerotic relations.
Phaedras continues on and speaks of the things that Love can inspire men to. Though he does not
confine these benefits to homosocial interactions, he does specifically include them. After stating that
older men are more prone to die than be humiliated in the sight of their eromenos, he goes on to say
that, ??as for abandoning his boyfriend or not helping him when danger threatens ? well, possession

Phaedras claims, similarly to modern poets that love will drive one to the brink or even over the edge
