Concentration Camps Of The Second Anglo-Boer War
One of many forms of oppression the British practiced during the Second Anglo Boer War was the use
of concentration camps. Both blacks and whites were placed in the camps, and were required to
perform unpaid labor. However, the black and white camps were segregated, and the treatment of the
inmates in the black concentration camps was vastly different from the white camps. Less rations were
given, and less maintenance was performed on the camps, leading to starvation and poor living
conditions. Even after the war, when the white concentration camps had been transferred to civilian
control, the black concentration camps still remained under military command (Pretorius). Though
many Boers and British believed the war to be a white man s war , blacks continued to be segregated
and oppressed in order to profit off of their labor and gain advantage in battle. Many blacks fought on
the side of the British, believing they would receive education and more economic opportunities with
a victory by England ( Role ). Regardless of what side the natives took, the eventual outcomes of the
war still prevented them from reaching true equality with the soldiers they fought with at the turn of
the twentieth century. Subtle rules and regulations were implemented as a treaty between the English
and Boers prevented blacks from ever escaping the European induced living conditions. The
stipulation in the Treaty of Vereeniging that schools continue to teach in Dutch, and conduct court in

Charles Bailey And Martha Nussbaum
This essay is conceived with the purpose of demonstrating personal understanding of liberal education
as a result of assessing historic theory of Aristotle and comparing the contemporary theories of
Charles Bailey and Martha Nussbaum. In addition, the applicable situations of liberal education and
its governing principles will be discussed. Specifically, given the inevitable engagement of
compulsory education, which is inherently authoritarian, some aspects of liberal education are limited,
and full personal autonomy cannot be actualized. In this situation, liberal education would be less
effective and less suitable due to the loss of freedom to some degree. However, the importance of
liberal education is vital in breaking old cultural and religious world views to produce open minded
students who are capable of critical thinking. In addition, more benefits of liberal education will be
shown in my later analysis by comparing it to education that is straightly vocational.
The word liberal originates from the Latin liberalis , meaning free men who have been taken out of
servitude. A liberal society can be considered one composed of autonomous people who are capable of

This capacity is achieved in relation to the pluralistic feature of liberal education. Similar to Charles
Bailey s opinion, she also stresses that minds should be liberated from the constraints of old habits and
customs. But the difference is her theory applies to a larger and international scale. It gives liberal
education a more significant meaning as cultivating humanity for world citizenship. I believe
demonstrating the cosmopolitan concept of liberal education is relatively important, especially in
today s global and diverse

Happiness and Epicurus Essay examples
Epicureanism is a philosophy developed the teachings and ideals of a man named Epicurus.
Epicureanism is defined by Epicurus as the pleasure for the end of all morality and that real pleasure is
attained through a life of prudence, honor, and justice. Epicurus introduced this philosophy around
322 B.C, and two schools established in Athens. Epicurus taught the ethics of his philosophy in his
school, that a person should live by the art of making life happy , and that prudence is the noblest part
of philosophy (newadvent.org). Epicurus ideals for life intrigued people and they began to think that
perhaps the ethics of Epicureanism had some truth behind it; a person should live his/her life to the
fullest in order to become happy. Epicurus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, the Epicurean way isn t too far from today s world views on how Americans live. Thomas
Jefferson, during the history of America, admitted that the teachings of Epicureanism, by saying this
quote, Epicureanism and Epicurus give laws for governing ourselves, Jesus a supplement of the duties
and charities we owe to others, (epicurus.net). Through the eyes of the beholder a person can be able
to see that Epicureanism, in fact, can be put into the context of life without really thinking about the
philosophy. The history of Epicureanism is important for people because his teachings are simple
enough to live by, without submitting. The ethics behind Epicureanism are very simple. Epicurus
demonstrates that experience shows happiness is not best attained by directly seeking it. The selfish
are not more happy but less so than the unselfish. This statement is very powerful for the simple
person. Epicurus proves that if a person seeks to be happy he/she usually won t be able to find true
happiness.
Epicurus states
Thus although virtue is inseparable from pleasure and necessary if we are to be happy, it is to be
chosen not for its own sake but for the sake of pleasure. Beauty and the virtues and the like are to be
honored if they provide pleasure, but, if they do not, we must say goodbye to them.(Intro. Epicurus,

Home Ownership
The American Dream is the opportunity for individuals to prosper and succeed through hard work.
Many consider home ownership to be a critical aspect of the American Dream.
Home ownership is important for many reasons. Homes tend to create safer neighborhoods and
stabilize communities. Schools are built around strong communities which encourage and provide
education to the next generation. From a base economic level, when people buy homes, they also start
to spend money which helps grow the economy. The homeowner may buy refrigerators, sofas, tables,
lawn mowers, paint, etc. and may also engage multiple services and/or contractors for repairs and
construction projects.
In fact, according to statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Statistics, housing ... Show more

The best investment one can make is in his or herself, but excessive debt detracts them from becoming
homeowners. Instead, they choose to rent or live with family members. They do not have enough cash
saved to make a down payment on a house. Also, housing prices are at historic highs and many low to
middle class people individuals have essentially become priced out of today s housing market. Income
inequality prevents people from being able to purchase a home. Collectively, these factors have led to
a low rate of home ownership in the U.S.
Current trends could prove problematic down the road, as home ownership creates wealth for families,
allows for upward mobility, and provides many important positive economic tailwinds. However, as
the housing crisis taught us, lending standards must be maintained and home owners need to be
educated about the economic costs and benefits of owning their own home.
To be sure, the American Dream is alive and well. However, with Millennials comprising the largest
demographic in the U.S. and not yet having embraced home ownership, only time will tell if housing
will play as large a role as it did in years

Importance Of A Dream Without Ambition
Sean Hampton once stated, A dream without ambition is like a car without gas...you re not going
anywhere. Ambition is the gas for your car and your car is your motivation. It keeps you going
through the hardest weather and gives you enough power to go down the road of success. Without
your ambition, you don t have motivation and if you don t have motivation, then you re just stuck in
the middle of nowhere. Although many people discredit ambition for being a negative quality to
obtain, ambition is a major part of a person s success because it leads a person to achieve positive
goals that benefit themselves and others and it influences people to strive for personal growth.
Although many people believe that ambition is a quality that makes you selfish, ambition is the thing
that makes you get up in the morning with a sense of enthusiasm to do the things with a purpose.
According to Borzykowski, Those who wish to be more, know more, do more, give more or have
more, have a purpose and a powerful internal drive that leads them to dream bigger and go further.
Ambitious people tend do more, be more, and give more because they have dreams, which is just
another word for positive goals. For someone to achieve their goals, it takes just the right amount of
ambition to do it and when it is accomplished, the person will keep making new goals to improve.
According to Burton, A person cannot alter his ambition any more than he can alter any other
character trait: having

Irony In The Canterbury Tales
Throughout The Canterbury Tales Chaucer uses elements of irony. The Canterbury.Tales is a frame
story compiling the tales of a number of characters on their way to the Canterbury Cathedral. This
Middle English work was never completely finished due to Chaucer s death in 1400; however, the
twenty four completed stories have been passed down through hand written manuscripts. The Pardoner
s Tale and The WIfe of Bath s Tale both feature a number of ironic statements from the characters
within each story. With his extensive use of irony Chaucer conveys his true feelings toward those he
wrote of in the tales. The Pardoner s Tale is a tale of three drinking men on their quest to find death.
Throughout the story Chaucer uses irony to show both the ironic journey of the men, and to show how
corrupt the Pardoner himself is. After encountering an old man in the streets, the men are pointed
towards a tree where they are told they will find death, but when they reach the tree only gold is to be
found. When the three drinking men state Who would have thought / This morning was to be our
lucky day? (181 182) Chaucer is using irony to allude to the fact that the three men do indeed find
death, but it is their own death they find. The Pardoner is using the three men to support his claim that
greed is the root of all evil and due to each of their desires to have all the gold to themselves they will
all perish. The tale shows how by finding the gold the brotherly oath to protect one

How Did Jackie Kennedy Contribute To Society
Jacqueline Lee Kennedy Onassis was born on July 28, 1929, and was the wife of President John F.
Kennedy from 1961 until his assassination in 1963. During her marriage to John F. Kennedy and she
was not only noticed as the first lady, but as a fashion icon as well as her contributions to the arts, and
the preservations of historic architecture. Yet her style, elegance, and grace are some of her most
memorable characteristics as the first lady and years to come. Now to the younger generation who
have never had the chance to see the dazzling wardrobe of Jackie Kennedy in person, they have a
different perspective on what she wore. Many people from this generation misunderstood the beauty
in Jackie Kennedy s outfits and rewritten them off as a safe and conservative style when in reality

Disability And The Justification Of Inequality In American...
While disability rights and awareness have advanced, disabled people have not been able to wrest total
control of the discrimination placed upon them due to the way society uses the idea of disability as a
metaphor signifying human incapacity. In Douglas C. Baynton s, Disability and the Justification of
inequality in American History, he analyzes the controlling metaphor of disability through race.
Similarly watching Donald Trump s infamous speech where he mocks a disabled reporter shows how
the metaphor also relates to hierarchal inferiority. Throughout history, American culture has come to
define disability as a social burden. Metaphors of disability are utilized in order to justify society s
exclusionary stance towards different or abnormal people. Examples of the usage of this metaphor are
omnipresent. Starting in elementary school, children who learn at a slower pace than others become
categorized as handicapped. In daily life and informal conversation the question, Are you retarded?
Berates someone for asking a perceived obvious question. Society has become accustomed to using
the term disability and other slang referring to disability as a synonym for stupid or incompetent.
Many times it goes further than simply rhetoric; the able bodied, even supposedly fair figures such as
The President of the United States, can use a representation of disabled people to make a point or
reference incompetence in others. This, in turn, further ostracizes disabled people and

The Code Of Chivalry In Ancient Rome
Courtesy, generosity, valor, modesty, and many other characteristics were not only used to classify a
knight, but are still used to distinguish a true gentleman. A chivalrous act performed towards a girl is
something we do not see very often anymore. How often do you see a man opening the car door for
his lady? It all started a thousand five hundred years ago when there was no such thing as chivalry
being well known by all people. During these years the Roman Empire was the cultural and economic
center of a good amount of people from around the world. Suddenly, for a few reasons pertaining to
the era, Rome vanished. The tranquility began to be replaced with violence. Overlords began to put
themselves out there, and be a part of the Roman landscape. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

We see it today as it inspires philosophers, and writers. For example, Morte d Arthur, who was a
knight was cruelly killed and dies. When his body is shown to King Arthur he tells Arthur, he had been
attacked by King Pellinore at the well, and then begged that he should be buried, and that one of
Arthur s knights should avenge his death. (Malory, p.99) Another example would be Sir Gawain in the
Green Knight has to do with the arrival of the Green Knight at King Arthur s feast. He challenges
King Arthur to his game, but Sir Gawain ends up accepting the challenge instead of the king. Then the
Green knights head is cut off. As he picks up the knights head he tells Sir Gawain that he must meet
back with him in one year. This way he can return the challenge. One year passes, and he comes
across a castle on his path. With grace he is let inside the castle, and is aloud to stay for a few days.
The lord of the castle makes up a game. The Lord has to go hunting and Sir Gawain has to stay in the
the castle. They both at the end of the night have to exchange their winnings. The lord of the castle is
the Green Knight. Basically the reason for the game was to test the chivalry values of Sir Gawain
throughout the story and the game he made up. This was very clever of

store we notice a new book saying 100 ways to make a fortune within a month. Since we already paid
for the other book, we are easily convinced that may this could be the right book that actually gives us
real ways to become rich. So then we buy it and still feel like the information is not enough. We go
back to the bookstore and look again. Since we already lost a lot of money in the other book s we are
hoping that eventually we will find that right book with authentic information to finally know how to

The rescuing of Maxwell is very different from the book. The first way is the fact that Kevin drove a

Maxwell also didn t ever end up spending the night with his dad. Therefore the scene where Kevin
saves Maxwell is different from the book. Maxwell gets the empty book different. Maxwell gets the

Raz On The Autonomy Of Legal Reasoning
The autonomous nature of legal reasoning is the subject of much contention amongst legal actors and
is understood to be restrictively in positivist Raz . In his paper On the Autonomy of Legal Reasoning
Raz asserts that legal reasoning reasoning according to law is an instance of moral reasoning, that
legal reasoning is not, in the strong sense, autonomous. This view is based on the assumption that
legal doctrines are only justified if they are morally justified. Below, follows an appraisal of the
various justifications of this assertion and a defence of Raz s position on the autonomy of legal
reasoning.
Legal positivism formulated by English jurist John Austin characterises the system of laws, the
existence of which, is dependent on social facts . Positivism accepts the Separation thesis that there is
no necessary connection between law and morality . To this end, it denies any necessary moral criteria
of legality . Furthermore, it does not necessarily accept that moral principles can directly determine
whether certain rules are valid law, as naturalism does . ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Raz, the former is underpinned by the Sources thesis which states that all law is source
based; that is, its existence and content can be determined by reference to social facts alone. The latter

in this case a process of empirical analysis, moral reasoning, and deduction from serious rules. Thus, it
follows from his argument, that reasoning about or according to the law is an occurrence of the

Quebec National Cinema
Quebec Cinema as National Cinema
Quebec has had a long association with the idea of independence from the rest of Canada. The
province has had two referendums to vote on whether it should separate from Canada or not.
However, this want for independence is not just shown in the political sphere, but as well in its
culture, and especially its film industry. Because of this independence, the Quebec film industry
should be viewed as a separate entity from Canadian film, and not as a regional cinema of Canada.
Quebec cinema is a national cinema because of the protection of the French Canadian language and
culture, along with its refusal of the outside, and its specific use of the direct cinema. These traits can
be seen in the canonical films Mon ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Films of this period began to reflect a change in the values and attitudes of the French Canadian
people as political separatism started to become a real possibility for Quebec. Michel Houle even
argues that the Quiet Revolution was started in part due to the freedom of speech that came from the
films of the early 1960s; they instigated a sort of identity crisis in the people of Quebec (168). With
this, film production was also subject to the growing auteur principle, which stressed artistic control,
expressive freedom, and personal style in direction, independent of established industry practices ,
(Reines 24 25). This meant that many film directors started to take on their own styles and thusly
formed a set of characteristics that became standard of Quebec films: further rejection of outside film
industries practices, and the shift towards the le direct style of filmmaking (Gittings

Rural Areas Is Poor And Lagging Behind The Rest Of The...
Body:
I. Main Point 1. The facts show that education in rural areas is poor and lagging behind the rest of the
country.
A. The first common fact that can be seen is the lack of resources in rural schools. The U.S.
Department of Education reported that rural teachers on the average earn less money and work longer
hours than there counterparts in other geographic regions and open teacher positions are harder to fill.
Less pay and harder work is what awaits the rural teacher.
B. The second fact is that rural schools need funds and materials to do their job. According to the
National Education Program, Rural schools serve over 40 percent of our nation s students, but receive
only 22 percent of federal education funding.
C. A third fact facing rural schools is the rate of poverty of the students and their families. . According
to Dan Fishman, high school teacher in rural New Mexico and the former director of K 12 programs at
The Philanthropy Roundtable overall, one in four rural children live in poverty, and of the 50 U.S.
counties with the highest child poverty rates, 48 are rural. This causes the school to be faced with
many other problems such as nutrition and social issues.
Transition: Now that we understand some of the facts, let us look at some of the leading causes of the
poor education in rural America.
II. Main Point 2. The leading causes for substandard education in rustic areas of the United States are
common and readily identifiable.

Contribution Of The Galatians
To give some background, Paul is believed to be born in Tarsus and descendant of the Hebrew tribe of
Benjamin. Raised in a Jewish home, he was taught the Old Testament scriptures and brought up in
accordance with the beliefs and practices of the Pharisees. As he grew older, he was sent to the city of
Jerusalem, where he studied under Gamaliel, one of the leading Jewish rabbis of that time. He then
returned to Jerusalem and began studying to become a rabbi. During his studies there began a conflict
within him between human law and desires. This conflict became unbearable for Paul, so he gave up
on becoming a rabbi. While looking for a new goal in life he decided to work on suppressing the new
religion during this time, Christianity.
This was a crucial turning point for Paul, he witnessed the Christians actions and he began to have a
growing respect for the faith, until he was finally ready to join the cause. Paul was instrumental in
shaping western churches and Christianity. Many revival and reform movements during the course of
Christian history have been started by Paul s section of the New Testament. For example, Martin
Luther s commentary on Romans was an important factor in the advancement of the Protestant
Reformation. Paul s letters have had enormous influence on Christianity and secure his place as one of
the greatest religious leaders.

time in which our country is not at war. One of the most common wars the United States was a part of
was World War II. This war was fought from 1939 until 1945, regarding the acts of certain countries
such as Germany, Italy, and Japan. These countries were violating human rights by placing innocent
individuals, that they considered to be weak, into concentration camps. Humans of today s society
should be required to learn about the conditions of concentration camps, the treatment towards the
prisoners in concentration camps, and the aftermath of concentration camps, to prevent the history
from repeating itself. Leading up to World War II, the Nazi party ... Show more content on

It was liberated during a time in which the allies were ahead of the axis in the war. The US Seventh
Army s 45th Division liberated Dachau. A few days before Dachau was liberated, the SS forced seven
thousand of the prisoners of Dachau to the front of the camp. They forced them on a death march from
Dachau to Tegernsee on April 27th, 1945. The next day, most of the SS officials abandoned the camp.
On April 29th, Dachau was liberated after a small battle between the US and the remaining SS
officials. One of the individuals that helped liberate Dachau described his arrival into the camp as
Incinerators were used to cremate victims partly to reduce the need for burial but also in an attempt to
hide the evidence of mass murder and camp atrocities. At Dachau, American troops arrived to find
dead bodies still piled around the camp awaiting cremation or burial ( Dachau ). This shows how
poorly the prisoners were treated because they didn t even have the privilege of being buried, they
were just thrown into a pile of dead bodies. In the camp, after liberation, there were over thirty
thousand survivors. Americans found over thirty railroad cars full of dead bodies near the

Analysis Of Tim Burton s The Brilliant Joker Essay
It is easy to empathize with Jack Nicholson s brilliant Joker as he laments in Tim Burton s classic
1989 film, Batman, Where does he get those wonderful toys? The average person may not be
villainously inclined, but one can certainly relate to having their best laid plans constantly being
thwarted. Though, to be fair, probably very few people would take issue with someone as awesome as
the Batman getting in their way. Despite being a mere mortal, Batman and his fellow graphic novel
heroes serve as present day gods akin to the ancient Greek gods of Rome. There are a great many
things that set Batman apart from his colleagues, however; chief among them are his tragic origin
story, the best villains in modern literature, his total lack of superpowers, wealth, and endless
interpretations.
Everyone loves a good origin story. Superman s parents are killed in the explosion of their home
planet, Krypton, and spare him from the same fate by shipping him off to earth on a spacecraft. Spider
Man, who was already living with his aunt and uncle because his parents died while he was still a
child, witnesses his beloved uncle Ben die in front of his eyes at the hands of a thief. Yet Batman s
origin tale easily surpasses both in terms of flair for the dramatic. As a child, young Bruce Wayne is
walking with his parents, Thomas and Martha, through an alley after having left a screening of the
Mark of Zorro. Gunmen seeking to steal Martha s exposed pearls approach the family. An altercation

Control The Rest Analysis
When people hear the word happiness they think of many different things but what we don t really
think of is how do we actually become happy, Do we actually have control over how happy we are?
After reading different articles and watching a couple of Ted Talks I do believe we strongly influence
and control how happy we actually are for example in The Key to Happiness: Partly Genetic, But You
Control The Rest the article talks about genetics and how that affects our level of happiness and how
twins are usually just as happy as the other the article states that genetics are 50% of our happiness
which came from research of twins who were separated at birth The researchers have come up with a
formula that they have used in a number of publications. It s 50 percent genetics. The circumstances
we find ourselves in like where we live, the quality of our love lives, whether we have a few bucks in
the bank account for only about 10 percent. The remaining 40 percent is within our control, how we
think and behave. The article basically states that we do does greatly influence our happiness, even
though half of it comes from our genetics.

amount of satisfaction that we get from buying a new outfit or shoes or any material item to try to hide
the fact that we are unhappy. So even though we believe that buying things for ourselves will make us

For example when children learn about the story of language it covers language and where it comes
from but also the culture and the timelines of the story of language. Through an intergraded
curriculum the teacher can reinforce various areas of study without the children feeling that it is
repetitive or being drilled in like the parrot work I had at school. The children then form a better idea
of how interconnected the universe around them is as they are moving into the plane of development
from Concrete to Abstract thinking. It is there for very important that the enlightened generalist
teacher comes up with ways to speak to the child s imagination. The teacher does not only have to be
knowledgeable of the subjects but needs to look at the child s growth in terms of moral learning. By
concentrating on this the child will have an appreciation for life and not only empathize, but apply
what they know and do community projects as a class. The teacher will guide the children into the
right direction, but it will be a task where the children get to go out in the world and make a difference
and experience things first hand. As in pre school the Montessori materials in the elementary
classroom serve a purpose and this is also relative to the elementary child. The materials are made and
prepared to aid in abstract concepts, grab the imagination and give the child a view of the universe and
the role they can play in it. Dr Maria Montessori used

Southern Charm Or False Living Analysis
Southern Charm or False Living? Luigi Pirandello once said Anyone can be heroic from time to time,
but a gentleman is something you have to be all the time. I think this quote truly sums up what our
culture lacks today. Anyone can do something nice once in a while, but it takes a true spirit of valor to
serve and love those around them all the time. Southern Culture tends to have this impression that all
men are gentlemen, and the ladies are all charming and gracefully kind. This then begs the question;
what does a true gentlemen or lady look like? In my opinion these types of people serve other
unconditionally, respect those in authority over them, and a true gentlemen loves the Lord most of all.
Second Throughout life one of the hardest things to do, is to respect those over us. Whether our
parents, bosses, or even when we disagree politically with our leaders, we are called to honor them.
Often times those who respect those over them, without griping or complaining, are the true
gentlemen or ladies of today s culture. When I m around complainer, it totally changes the way I look
at my leaders, or even sometimes peers. I start to not want to listen to what they tell me, or I m always
talking behind their back instead of respecting the role they have over me. Thus true people with
southern charm tend to have a positive outlook ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Every action, every goal, every process, and every marathon all start with the initial first step. The
beginning to any long journey is fundamental to laying the groundwork for what is to come. Not only
does the first piece mold the integrity and face of the whole system, but without the first step, the

The entrance gate read, Arbeit Macht Frei meaning Work will set you free (Winstone 119). This Nazi
ideology and propaganda would be repeated in future concentration camps following its appearance at
Dachau. The camp was completely secluded from any social, real world interactions, and inside its
confined borders the only known aspects of life were agony, suffering, death, and above all else, work.
Dachau intended for obedient and submissive labor to be implemented into the heads of the prisoners
through a persistent system of propaganda. Dachau was originally an abandoned ammunitions factory,
and for this reason it was a targeted location to set up operations (Encyclopedia of the Holocaust 341).
Furthermore, this armaments industry quickly became vital to the operation of the Nazi army, seeing
that the ammunition and weapons the prisoners could produce was unprecedented. The cost of labor
was also exceptionally low as the only thing needed to be paid for was the prisoner s feeble rations.
Apart from weapons and ammunitions manufacturing, other labor consisted of the management of the
camp which was completely prisoner run. Workshops were established throughout the camp, and
prisoners worked as required by the supervising Schutzstaffel, or SS police organization
(Encyclopedia of the Holocaust 341). However workshops and armaments were among the easier type

Comparing Alienation In The Scarlet Letter And Easy A
In both the fiction romance novel, The Scarlet Letter, composed by American novelist, Nathaniel
Hawthorne and the romantic movie comedy Easy A, administered by American film director, Will
Gluck, the topic of alienation can be detected throughout the plot in order to show how the main
female characters in each work, have experienced the state of being isolated from a group or
community. Both creators and organizers of each piece of work, establish an ambivalent tone towards
the main female character. One of the most prominent topics found throughout both Easy A and The
Scarlet Letter, is that of alienation. In The Scarlet Letter, before the plot of the novel even begins, we

Reflection On Children
Over the course of the semester we have discussed and analyzed several issues and situations that can
create adverse conditions for children. Unfortunately, the society in the U.S. portrays children as being
fragile and vulnerable. Thus, leading to the belief that children require an immense need for protecting
and sheltering from troublesome events. However, as we have progressed through the stories of
several children from various eras and backgrounds. It has become quite clear that the children are
actually quite capable of handling adverse situations. We examined the agonizing conditions of
slavery and prejudice that African American children have endured. For example, in the reading by
Frederick Douglas he explained his awareness of being imprisoned by slavery conditions at a very
young age. It was this level of awareness and understanding of how these actions went against his
basic human rights that afforded him the ability to break free from the atrocities of slavery. Moreover,
it was what allowed him to realize that learning to read was another way to combat and ultimately free
himself from slavery. As he stated [i]t was a grand achievement, and I prized it highly. From that
moment, I understood the pathway from slavery to freedom (Douglas 59). Thus, proving to illustrate
the significant amount of strength and resiliency children do possess. In a society where children are
primarily an afterthought, it is imperative for adults to begin to understand that children

Patrick Bateman And Narcissistic Personality Disorder
Personality disorders are pervasive in nature, and are depicted in various mediums from film to
novels. Narcissism will be discussed as it pertains to American Psycho; a film made in the early 2000
s to describe a man who lives a double life as a business man and serial killer. The main character in
particular, Patrick Bateman displays with themes of Narcissistic Personality Disorder and his case
along with the factors that are congruent with Narcissistic Personality Disorder will be discussed
throughout. Patrick Bateman s personality disorder will be discussed in terms of effective treatment
and also the etiological factors that could have given rise to Narcissistic Personality Disorder. An
effective prevention strategy will be adapted for Bateman, considering the influences and possible
history gleaned from the movie. In addition to the themes, treatment and factors associated with this
personality disorder, more personality disorders will be briefly discussed at the end to show a well
thought out and comprehensive paper. DSM IV Classification of Narcissistic Personality Disorder for
Patrick Bateman The fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistics Manual describes personality
disorders as being a pattern of enduring behavior and internal experiences that tends to digress a
significant amount from the individual s cultural and societal standards (Sadock, Kaplan Sadock,
2015). This personality disorder is diagnosed in the presence of grandiosity and the need to be
admired and appreciated. There is a chronic lack of empathy as well as inflated self esteem and the
belief that one is entitled to the adoration of others. Narcissistic Personality Disorder is classified
under Cluster B, showcasing more erratic and emotional behavior which can be seen in the film
American Psycho. Patrick Bateman is a wealthy investment banker living in Manhattan in the late
1980s. His life revolves around dining at trendy restaurants while keeping up appearances for his

Legalizing Same-Sex Marriages
The topic of legalizing same sex marriages brings up heated debates on legal, religious, moral, and
philosophical grounds. In researching material for this paper this writer could not help but read reports
that indicate that the country is fairly well divided on this issue. The debate can go round and around
and the answer to the question of legalizing same sex marriages is not as easy as it may seem. There
are solid rebuttals to any supposition one makes on the issue, making the debate a lot more interesting
than one might believe.
In general there are several philosophical arguments against same sex marriage: The first claims that
marriage is an innately reproductive union of two people and that same sex marriages innately lack the
potential for any type of reproduction, therefore it is metaphysically and biologically impossible for
homosexuals to become married to one another. Thus, same sex marriages should not occur. Critics of
this line of reasoning would state that there is no one who would support the notion of not allowing
infertile heterosexual couples or fertile heterosexual couples who do not plan to have children the right
to marry one another. Thus, this argument is not valid as an explanation of why same sex marriages
should not be allowed. However, the rebuttal to this counter argument would be that the sexual
intercourse that takes place between either infertile heterosexual couples or heterosexual couples not
desiring children is reproductive in kind.

Gender Norms In The Media
Media is defined as any form of communication; however, the term is mainly used for television,
radio, and the Internet. Regardless of the form it takes, media holds the power to construct and reflect
our own sense of identity, in both affirmative and detrimental ways (199). In American society, the
media makes many assumptions based on gender, race, and religion that directly affects how people in
a society view each other. Media creates many assumptions on the female gender that generates
people s views on femininity.

One religion that contains bias from the media is the Amish. Amish settlements have become a clichÊ
for refusing technology. Tens of thousands of people wear identical, plain, homemade clothing,
cultivate their rich fields with horse drawn machinery, and live in houses lacking that basic modern
spirt called electricity (Rheingold 221). The media takes a very sophisticated belief into an assumption
that suggests that Amish do not use technology at all. Another religion that contains bias from the
media is Islam. According to the media, Islam is a religion associated with terrorism. This media
assumption is based on the, emergence of the self proclaimed Islamic State group (ISIS) which
allegedly shows videos of the beheadings of their prisoners who are most often journalists (Espiritu).
This has caused people to use the terms Muslim and Terrorist interchangeably. Not all Muslims who
associate with Islam are terrorists. For example, Malala Yousafzai, a Muslim, is the youngest Nobel
Peace Prize winner and an education activist. Media also makes assumptions on the religion for Jews,
Judaism. Jews are often interpreted as incredibly prosperous, cheap, and unkind. In truth, Jewish
people can be wealthy or poor, intelligent or less intelligent, kind or otherwise (Media Portrayals of

Nuclear Weapon Production Of Nuclear Weapons Essay
Nuclear Weapon Production Apocalypse
Hunter Honeycutt
Western Kentucky University Glasgow
Nuclear Weapon Production Apocalypse
If the production of nuclear weaponry is not diminished, it will cause the end of everything. With the
production of nuclear weapons increasing, it will only be a matter of time until a nuclear war breaks
out. When a nuclear weapon is used, it has three killing modes. The first would be the impact, when
the bomb first hits. The second would be the shockwave that extends outward a good deal. Thirdly, the
radiation effect would kill several more after that.
How does a nuclear weapon work you might ask? Well there are two ways a nuclear weapon can
work. One is nuclear fission and the other is nuclear fusion. In nuclear fission, the nucleus of an atom
is split in two by a neutron. To do this, isotopes will need to be present such as uranium (uranium 235,
uranium 233) or plutonium (plutonium 239) (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament). An isotope is the
same element but with different numbers. Nuclear fusion is kind of how the sun works. According to
Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, two small atoms are fused together to create one large atoms.
This typically requires hydrogen or hydrogen isotopes (deuterium, tritium), to form a larger one
(helium isotopes) (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament).
As stated in a previous paragraph, a nuclear weapon will kill on contact. According to a website article
by History.com, the first bomb that was

Sense And Sensibility Play Summary
My impression of the play Sense Sensibility adapted by Jessica Swale was that it was almost like a
soap opera . There were tons of drama throughout the play and was also was almost two and half
hours long. It was based on a family the lives in England from the mid 90 s called the Dashwood s.
Throughout the play it was mostly based on the struggles that the Dashwood s went through on a daily
basis. The main struggle was them losing their father John Dashwood. They lost their castle of a house
and almost all of the wealth. Everything went to Mr. Dashwood s half brother and his wife. Also, the
love feuds that went on between Elinor Dashwood and Marianne Dashwood played a huge part of the
play. Sense Sensibility started off with the Dashwood s losing their house and basically all of their
money. This caused great anger and fear for the Dashwood family. Before the family had to move out
of the house one of the protagonist Elinor Dashwood fell in love with her sister in law s brother
Edward. They had to move into their distant relatives the Middleton s family. Their house wasn t
anything special and lived in a small town. It was hard for the Dashwood s to adjust to a completely
different lifestyle. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

other played a different character it obvious. The other characters were dressed in typical mid 90 s
England wardrobe with lots of colors and pants. The scenery of the play was based on the screen in the
back of the stage. It was changed throughout different scenes. The scene would look like you were in a
house, or outside in the valley, or by the ocean. The music in the play was when Marianne would play

Florida State University Essay
Introduction Nick Tosches once said, I don t have a college degree (Picturequotes, 2017). Quite
frankly, neither do I considering the fact that I am fourteen years old and not a genius. Over the course
of the past nine weeks, I have been researching about Florida State University, it s financial aid, the
process of going through college, and Florida State University s history. College Information
Biographical Florida State University is one of 145 colleges in Florida. The history behind it just
makes it ever so unique and more differentiating from those other colleges. Florida State University
gained its beginning in 1823, where the Territorial Legislature began to plan a higher education system

Eventually due to reorganization, when the University of Gainesville was established, it became a men
s school, so Florida State College had become a womans school. The name then changed once again
to Florida Female college, and then again. In 1909 the name of the college was changed to Florida
State College for Women, an institution which grew to become the third largest women s college in
the nation during the 1930 s (Florida State University: History, 2017). In 1947, those returning from
World War II had brought back men, thus it no longer being a women s college. After the men had
returned, the college s title changed to Florida State University. Soon after, throughout the years until
more recent times, the major changes made to the university included new developments of structures
and new designations for different organizations (Florida State University: History, 2017). Personal I
would like to attend Florida State University for multiple reasons. First of all, I already feel a personal
connection with Florida due to the fact that it is my home state where I was born. The sense of
familiarity gives me comfort. I also have family that lives in Florida if anything were to happen or go
wrong. I would like to pursue a major in Arts and Sciences and also have a minor in psychology. My
future aspirations in life vary from a few different things. In the most specific manner, I hope to
become a prison psychologist. Shall

Summary Of The Dirty Little Secrets Of Getting A Dream Job
The present state of the American economy is one that has improved since the Great Recession, but is
still nevertheless an arduous battle zone for job hunting. Obtaining a job is difficult on its own, getting
a good one is even harder, and obtaining one s own dream job is usually even more difficult. Don
Raskin in his book, The Dirty Little Secrets of Getting Your Dream Job, opens up his ideology
regarding this subject with a much more optimistic mentality. He argues that the economy is
improving and that the market for jobs is indeed getting stronger, but college graduates are in a
position where they become underemployed. In this, he moves on to realize that there are realistic
things hopeful college graduates can do to get their desired ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

When I m applying for jobs or internships, it doesn t usually come to mind that there are probably
hundreds of other applicants looking for a similar job. Raskin argues that in order to be successful at
landing a job, you need to have something to catch the eye of the prospective employer who is
probably sifting through multiple resumes every hour. This involves having a legitimate and well
thought out cover letter, resume, and email letter note. Raskin even breaks down the resume and what
he looks for in applicants. The resume is single handedly the most important part of the application
process aside from the interview and what comes after, and he breaks it down step by step in order for
you to understand what it is you need to do. He even emphasizes that the interest and activities portion
of the resume is an often overlooked but important part that tells the employers about the human being
that s applying for the job. The best part of the book, however, is the little anecdotes of people that
Raskin actually interviewed. These anecdotes are sometimes failures, successes, or somewhere in
between. Understanding these experiences helped me to understand what this really meant

Annexation Of Texas Dbq Essay
Throughout the late 1830s and early 1840s, political controversy broke out over the annexation of
Texas into the United States claiming that it was the destiny of the country to expand through the
Manifest Destiny. Many Americans saw the potential addition of Texas as an essential component in
Westward expansion, however, war with Mexico was an unavoidable risk and would create even more
problems with slavery. Northern and Western regions of the Unites States opposed annexation because
while the South wanted to add Texas into the Union to expand the slave industry. Annexation of Texas
was also seen as revenge for the vast amount of American deaths during the Alamo and Goliad.
Politicians battled back and forth on whether or not Texas should be in American control or not. I

During the Alamo and Goliad, American blood was spilled by the Mexicans as a result of a mild revolt
against the Mexican government. In Polk s World Message from 1846, Polk explained that it is the
duty of the to protect the citizens of no matter what country they are currently living in. Polk stated
that, Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory and shed
American blood upon American soil. She has proclaimed that hostilities have commences and that the
two nations are now at war... We are called upon by every consideration of duty and patriotism to
vindicate with decision the honor, the rights, and the interest of our country . Polk is justifying the
annexation of Texas because it is the United States obligation to fight back for all of those killed in the
Alamo and Goliad. If Texas is to remain under the control of Mexico, it

The Components Of The Sherman Antitrust Act-1890
Peyton Fox 12/3/17 Block B7 Unit 4 legislation Project Sherman Antitrust Act 1890 The Sherman
Antitrust Act is the oldest of America s Antitrust laws. It was signed into law by President Benjamin
Harrison on July 2, 1890. The purpose of the Sherman Antitrust Act was to preserve free competition
in business and made it a crime to take over any part of trade or commerce. It was intended to regulate
interstate commerce, and to regain a balance in industry allowing equal opportunities to all businesses.
The Sherman Antitrust Act had its supporters and detractors. Supporters of the Sherman Antitrust Act
were the farmers because they had no competition with the big businesses. They also stated that
prohibiting unreasonable restraints on trade would allow them to expand their business. Those
opposed of the Sherman Antitrust Act believed that big companies should be able to decide what
happens in business markets. Business owners also opposed this due to protect the process of
competition. Applying strong incentives for businesses to operate efficiently, keeping prices down and
quality up. Homestead Act 1862 The Homestead Act was passed on May 20, 1862. It stated anyone
over the age of 21 who was the head of a family could obtain up to 160 acres of public land if they
lived on it for five years and make improvements. It was intended to move more settlers west, to give
more free states voice in congress. People decided that it would be profitable to turn

  • 2. Concentration Camps Of The Second Anglo-Boer War One of many forms of oppression the British practiced during the Second Anglo Boer War was the use of concentration camps. Both blacks and whites were placed in the camps, and were required to perform unpaid labor. However, the black and white camps were segregated, and the treatment of the inmates in the black concentration camps was vastly different from the white camps. Less rations were given, and less maintenance was performed on the camps, leading to starvation and poor living conditions. Even after the war, when the white concentration camps had been transferred to civilian control, the black concentration camps still remained under military command (Pretorius). Though many Boers and British believed the war to be a white man s war , blacks continued to be segregated and oppressed in order to profit off of their labor and gain advantage in battle. Many blacks fought on the side of the British, believing they would receive education and more economic opportunities with a victory by England ( Role ). Regardless of what side the natives took, the eventual outcomes of the war still prevented them from reaching true equality with the soldiers they fought with at the turn of the twentieth century. Subtle rules and regulations were implemented as a treaty between the English and Boers prevented blacks from ever escaping the European induced living conditions. • 3. Charles Bailey And Martha Nussbaum This essay is conceived with the purpose of demonstrating personal understanding of liberal education as a result of assessing historic theory of Aristotle and comparing the contemporary theories of Charles Bailey and Martha Nussbaum. In addition, the applicable situations of liberal education and its governing principles will be discussed. Specifically, given the inevitable engagement of compulsory education, which is inherently authoritarian, some aspects of liberal education are limited, and full personal autonomy cannot be actualized. In this situation, liberal education would be less effective and less suitable due to the loss of freedom to some degree. However, the importance of liberal education is vital in breaking old cultural and religious world views to produce open minded students who are capable of critical thinking. In addition, more benefits of liberal education will be shown in my later analysis by comparing it to education that is straightly vocational. The word liberal originates from the Latin liberalis , meaning free men who have been taken out of servitude. A liberal society can be considered one composed of autonomous people who are capable of making ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This capacity is achieved in relation to the pluralistic feature of liberal education. Similar to Charles Bailey s opinion, she also stresses that minds should be liberated from the constraints of old habits and customs. I believe demonstrating the cosmopolitan concept of liberal education is relatively important, especially in today s global and diverse ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Happiness and Epicurus Essay examples Epicureanism is a philosophy developed the teachings and ideals of a man named Epicurus. Epicureanism is defined by Epicurus as the pleasure for the end of all morality and that real pleasure is attained through a life of prudence, honor, and justice. Epicurus introduced this philosophy around 322 B.C, and two schools established in Athens. Epicurus taught the ethics of his philosophy in his school, that a person should live by the art of making life happy , and that prudence is the noblest part of philosophy (newadvent.org). Epicurus ideals for life intrigued people and they began to think that perhaps the ethics of Epicureanism had some truth behind it; a person should live his/her life to the fullest in order to become happy. Epicurus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, the Epicurean way isn t too far from today s world views on how Americans live. Thomas Jefferson, during the history of America, admitted that the teachings of Epicureanism, by saying this quote, Epicureanism and Epicurus give laws for governing ourselves, Jesus a supplement of the duties and charities we owe to others, (epicurus.net). Through the eyes of the beholder a person can be able to see that Epicureanism, in fact, can be put into the context of life without really thinking about the philosophy. The history of Epicureanism is important for people because his teachings are simple enough to live by, without submitting. The ethics behind Epicureanism are very simple. Epicurus demonstrates that experience shows happiness is not best attained by directly seeking it. The selfish are not more happy but less so than the unselfish. This statement is very powerful for the simple person. Epicurus proves that if a person seeks to be happy he/she usually won t be able to find true happiness. Epicurus states Thus although virtue is inseparable from pleasure and necessary if we are to be happy, it is to be chosen not for its own sake but for the sake of pleasure. Beauty and the virtues and the like are to be honored if they provide pleasure, but, if they do not, we must say goodbye to them.(Intro. Epicurus, 124) Happiness ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Home Ownership The American Dream is the opportunity for individuals to prosper and succeed through hard work. Many consider home ownership to be a critical aspect of the American Dream. Home ownership is important for many reasons. Homes tend to create safer neighborhoods and stabilize communities. Schools are built around strong communities which encourage and provide education to the next generation. From a base economic level, when people buy homes, they also start to spend money which helps grow the economy. The homeowner may buy refrigerators, sofas, tables, lawn mowers, paint, etc. and may also engage multiple services and/or contractors for repairs and construction projects. The best investment one can make is in his or herself, but excessive debt detracts them from becoming homeowners. Instead, they choose to rent or live with family members. Also, housing prices are at historic highs and many low to middle class people individuals have essentially become priced out of today s housing market. Income inequality prevents people from being able to purchase a home. Collectively, these factors have led to a low rate of home ownership in the U.S. Current trends could prove problematic down the road, as home ownership creates wealth for families, allows for upward mobility, and provides many important positive economic tailwinds. However, as the housing crisis taught us, lending standards must be maintained and home owners need to be educated about the economic costs and benefits of owning their own home. To be sure, the American Dream is alive and well. However, with Millennials comprising the largest demographic in the U.S. and not yet having embraced home ownership, only time will tell if housing will play as large a role as it did in years ... • 6. Importance Of A Dream Without Ambition Sean Hampton once stated, A dream without ambition is like a car without gas...you re not going anywhere. Ambition is the gas for your car and your car is your motivation. It keeps you going through the hardest weather and gives you enough power to go down the road of success. Without your ambition, you don t have motivation and if you don t have motivation, then you re just stuck in the middle of nowhere. Although many people discredit ambition for being a negative quality to obtain, ambition is a major part of a person s success because it leads a person to achieve positive goals that benefit themselves and others and it influences people to strive for personal growth. Although many people believe that ambition is a quality that makes you selfish, ambition is the thing that makes you get up in the morning with a sense of enthusiasm to do the things with a purpose. According to Borzykowski, Those who wish to be more, know more, do more, give more or have more, have a purpose and a powerful internal drive that leads them to dream bigger and go further. Ambitious people tend do more, be more, and give more because they have dreams, which is just another word for positive goals. For someone to achieve their goals, it takes just the right amount of ambition to do it and when it is accomplished, the person will keep making new goals to improve. According to Burton, A person cannot alter his ambition any more than he can alter any other character trait: having ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Irony In The Canterbury Tales Throughout The Canterbury Tales Chaucer uses elements of irony. The Canterbury.Tales is a frame story compiling the tales of a number of characters on their way to the Canterbury Cathedral. This Middle English work was never completely finished due to Chaucer s death in 1400; however, the twenty four completed stories have been passed down through hand written manuscripts. The Pardoner s Tale and The WIfe of Bath s Tale both feature a number of ironic statements from the characters within each story. With his extensive use of irony Chaucer conveys his true feelings toward those he wrote of in the tales. The Pardoner s Tale is a tale of three drinking men on their quest to find death. Throughout the story Chaucer uses irony to show both the ironic journey of the men, and to show how corrupt the Pardoner himself is. After encountering an old man in the streets, the men are pointed towards a tree where they are told they will find death, but when they reach the tree only gold is to be found. When the three drinking men state Who would have thought / This morning was to be our lucky day? (181 182) Chaucer is using irony to allude to the fact that the three men do indeed find death, but it is their own death they find. The Pardoner is using the three men to support his claim that greed is the root of all evil and due to each of their desires to have all the gold to themselves they will all perish. • 9. Disability And The Justification Of Inequality In American... While disability rights and awareness have advanced, disabled people have not been able to wrest total control of the discrimination placed upon them due to the way society uses the idea of disability as a metaphor signifying human incapacity. In Douglas C. Baynton s, Disability and the Justification of inequality in American History, he analyzes the controlling metaphor of disability through race. Similarly watching Donald Trump s infamous speech where he mocks a disabled reporter shows how the metaphor also relates to hierarchal inferiority. Throughout history, American culture has come to define disability as a social burden. Metaphors of disability are utilized in order to justify society s exclusionary stance towards different or abnormal people. Examples of the usage of this metaphor are omnipresent. Starting in elementary school, children who learn at a slower pace than others become categorized as handicapped. In daily life and informal conversation the question, Are you retarded? Berates someone for asking a perceived obvious question. Society has become accustomed to using the term disability and other slang referring to disability as a synonym for stupid or incompetent. Many times it goes further than simply rhetoric; the able bodied, even supposedly fair figures such as The President of the United States, can use a representation of disabled people to make a point or reference incompetence in others. This, in turn, further ostracizes disabled people and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Raz On The Autonomy Of Legal Reasoning The autonomous nature of legal reasoning is the subject of much contention amongst legal actors and is understood to be restrictively in positivist Raz . In his paper On the Autonomy of Legal Reasoning Raz asserts that legal reasoning reasoning according to law is an instance of moral reasoning, that legal reasoning is not, in the strong sense, autonomous. This view is based on the assumption that legal doctrines are only justified if they are morally justified. Below, follows an appraisal of the various justifications of this assertion and a defence of Raz s position on the autonomy of legal reasoning. Legal positivism formulated by English jurist John Austin characterises the system of laws, the existence of which, is dependent on social facts . Positivism accepts the Separation thesis that there is no necessary connection between law and morality . To this end, it denies any necessary moral criteria of legality . Furthermore, it does not necessarily accept that moral principles can directly determine whether certain rules are valid law, as naturalism does . ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The province has had two referendums to vote on whether it should separate from Canada or not. However, this want for independence is not just shown in the political sphere, but as well in its culture, and especially its film industry. Because of this independence, the Quebec film industry should be viewed as a separate entity from Canadian film, and not as a regional cinema of Canada. The U.S. Department of Education reported that rural teachers on the average earn less money and work longer hours than there counterparts in other geographic regions and open teacher positions are harder to fill. • 22. Concentration Camp Dachau Research Paper Throughout our country s history, there have been very few generations that have been alive during a time in which our country is not at war. One of the most common wars the United States was a part of was World War II. This war was fought from 1939 until 1945, regarding the acts of certain countries such as Germany, Italy, and Japan. These countries were violating human rights by placing innocent individuals, that they considered to be weak, into concentration camps. Humans of today s society should be required to learn about the conditions of concentration camps, the treatment towards the prisoners in concentration camps, and the aftermath of concentration camps, to prevent the history from repeating itself. They forced them on a death march from Dachau to Tegernsee on April 27th, 1945. The next day, most of the SS officials abandoned the camp. On April 29th, Dachau was liberated after a small battle between the US and the remaining SS officials. One of the individuals that helped liberate Dachau described his arrival into the camp as Incinerators were used to cremate victims partly to reduce the need for burial but also in an attempt to hide the evidence of mass murder and camp atrocities. At Dachau, American troops arrived to find dead bodies still piled around the camp awaiting cremation or burial ( Dachau ). • 26. Analysis Of Tim Burton s The Brilliant Joker Essay It is easy to empathize with Jack Nicholson s brilliant Joker as he laments in Tim Burton s classic 1989 film, Batman, Where does he get those wonderful toys? The average person may not be villainously inclined, but one can certainly relate to having their best laid plans constantly being thwarted. Though, to be fair, probably very few people would take issue with someone as awesome as the Batman getting in their way. Despite being a mere mortal, Batman and his fellow graphic novel heroes serve as present day gods akin to the ancient Greek gods of Rome. There are a great many things that set Batman apart from his colleagues, however; chief among them are his tragic origin story, the best villains in modern literature, his total lack of superpowers, wealth, and endless interpretations. Everyone loves a good origin story. Superman s parents are killed in the explosion of their home planet, Krypton, and spare him from the same fate by shipping him off to earth on a spacecraft. Spider Man, who was already living with his aunt and uncle because his parents died while he was still a child, witnesses his beloved uncle Ben die in front of his eyes at the hands of a thief. Yet Batman s origin tale easily surpasses both in terms of flair for the dramatic. Luigi Pirandello once said Anyone can be heroic from time to time, but a gentleman is something you have to be all the time. I think this quote truly sums up what our culture lacks today. Anyone can do something nice once in a while, but it takes a true spirit of valor to serve and love those around them all the time. Southern Culture tends to have this impression that all men are gentlemen, and the ladies are all charming and gracefully kind. This then begs the question; what does a true gentlemen or lady look like? In my opinion these types of people serve other unconditionally, respect those in authority over them, and a true gentlemen loves the Lord most of all. Dachau was originally an abandoned ammunitions factory, and for this reason it was a targeted location to set up operations (Encyclopedia of the Holocaust 341). Unfortunately, the society in the U.S. portrays children as being fragile and vulnerable. Thus, leading to the belief that children require an immense need for protecting and sheltering from troublesome events. However, as we have progressed through the stories of several children from various eras and backgrounds. It has become quite clear that the children are actually quite capable of handling adverse situations. We examined the agonizing conditions of slavery and prejudice that African American children have endured. For example, in the reading by Frederick Douglas he explained his awareness of being imprisoned by slavery conditions at a very young age. It was this level of awareness and understanding of how these actions went against his basic human rights that afforded him the ability to break free from the atrocities of slavery. Moreover, it was what allowed him to realize that learning to read was another way to combat and ultimately free himself from slavery. • 38. Legalizing Same-Sex Marriages The topic of legalizing same sex marriages brings up heated debates on legal, religious, moral, and philosophical grounds. In researching material for this paper this writer could not help but read reports that indicate that the country is fairly well divided on this issue. The debate can go round and around and the answer to the question of legalizing same sex marriages is not as easy as it may seem. There are solid rebuttals to any supposition one makes on the issue, making the debate a lot more interesting than one might believe. In general there are several philosophical arguments against same sex marriage: The first claims that marriage is an innately reproductive union of two people and that same sex marriages innately lack the potential for any type of reproduction, therefore it is metaphysically and biologically impossible for homosexuals to become married to one another. Thus, same sex marriages should not occur. Critics of this line of reasoning would state that there is no one who would support the notion of not allowing infertile heterosexual couples or fertile heterosexual couples who do not plan to have children the right to marry one another. Thus, this argument is not valid as an explanation of why same sex marriages should not be allowed. However, the rebuttal to this counter argument would be that the sexual intercourse that takes place between either infertile heterosexual couples or heterosexual couples not desiring children is reproductive in kind. ... Nuclear Weapon Production Of Nuclear Weapons Essay Nuclear Weapon Production Apocalypse Hunter Honeycutt Western Kentucky University Glasgow Nuclear Weapon Production Apocalypse If the production of nuclear weaponry is not diminished, it will cause the end of everything. With the production of nuclear weapons increasing, it will only be a matter of time until a nuclear war breaks out. When a nuclear weapon is used, it has three killing modes. The first would be the impact, when the bomb first hits. The second would be the shockwave that extends outward a good deal. Thirdly, the radiation effect would kill several more after that. How does a nuclear weapon work you might ask? Well there are two ways a nuclear weapon can work. One is nuclear fission and the other is nuclear fusion. In nuclear fission, the nucleus of an atom is split in two by a neutron. To do this, isotopes will need to be present such as uranium (uranium 235, uranium 233) or plutonium (plutonium 239) (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament). An isotope is the same element but with different numbers. Nuclear fusion is kind of how the sun works. According to Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, two small atoms are fused together to create one large atoms. This typically requires hydrogen or hydrogen isotopes (deuterium, tritium), to form a larger one (helium isotopes) (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament).
