The spleen functions to filter blood, remove aged red blood cells, and act as a storage site for blood cells. It is located in the left upper abdomen and weighs 150-200 grams. The spleen contains red pulp with sinusoids that filter blood and white pulp with lymphatic tissue. The white pulp contains follicles of B cells and periarteriolar lymphatic sheaths of T cells. Diseases can cause the spleen to enlarge (splenomegaly) or rupture, requiring surgical removal (splenectomy) which increases vulnerability to certain bacteria.
