Republic of the Philippines Mindanao State University General Santos City “Barriers to Effective Communication” (A Report on Educational Technology I) Presented to: Dr. Maria Theresa Pelones Presented by: Jovanie D. Ora
Lesson1: Barriers to Effective Communication • Communication is a process by which you convey message to someone or a group of people. And if the message is conveyed clearly and unambiguously, then it is known as EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION. • In an effective communication, the message you had sent would reach the receiver with very little distortion. However, a communication becomes successful only if the receiver understands what the sender is trying to convey.
Lesson1: Barriers to Effective Communication Receiver (Decoder) Sender (Source/ Encoder) MESSAGE FEEDBACK CHANNEL CHANNEL The Process of Communication
Lesson1: Barriers to Effective Communication . • Barrier in effective communication is one of the major problems faced by many organizations. •Many social psychologists opine that there is 50% to 70% loss of meaning while conveying the message from sender to receiver.
Lesson1: Barriers to Effective Communication Some Common Barriers to Communication: LACK OF SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE -if a person who sends a message lacks subject knowledge, then he may not able to convey the message clearly. The receiver could misunderstand the message and this could lead to barrier to effective communication. STRESS when a person is under immense stress, he may find it difficult to understand the message leading to communication distortion. When we are stressed, our psychological frame of mind depends on our beliefs, experiences, goals and values. PHYSICAL BARRIERS -physical barriers in an organization includes large working areas that are physically separated from others. Other distraction that could cause physical barrier are the environment and background noise. LANGUAGE -inability to converse in language that is known by both the sender and the receiver is the greatest barrier in communication. When a person uses inappropriate words while conversing, it could lead to misunderstanding between the sender and receiver. EMOTIONS -your emotion could be a barrier when you are engrossed in your emotions for some reasons. You tend to have trouble in listening and understanding others when your emotions are elated.
Lesson1: Barriers to Effective Communication . Other Common Barriers to Communication: 1. Psychological Factors 2. Individual Linguistic Ability 3. Physiological Barriers 4. Semantic Barriers 5. Filtering of Negative Information 6. Lack of Credibility of Sender 7. Mixed Signals 8. Information Overload
Lesson1: Barriers to Effective Communication . Do’s for Breaking the Barriers: 1. Clarify ideas before sending. 4. Foster informal communication. 7. Obtain feedback. 2. Motivate the receiver. 5. Communicate feelings behind the facts. 8. Adapt to other person’s communication style. 6. Be aware of nonverbal communication. 3. Discuss differences in frame of references. 9. Ask for clarifications and repetitions when necessary.
Lesson1: Barriers to Effective Communication . Don’ts for Breaking the Barriers: Be a selective listener. -this is when a person hears another but selects not to hear. 3. Use long chain of command for communication. 2. Be a fixer. -a fixer is a person that tries to find other person’s fault. 4. Interrupt the speakers and ditract him by asking too many irrelevant questions.
Lesson1: Barriers to Effective Communication “The old has gone; the new has come!” -1 Thes. 5:17 GOD BLESS EVERYONE!
