Freedman Research Paper
A freedman or freedwoman is a former slave who has been released from slavery, usually by legal
means. Historically, slaves were freed either by manumission (granted freedom by their owner) or
emancipation (granted freedom as part of a larger group). The life of a freedman changed in the years
1865 through 1896 in many different ways. Socially the amounts of segregation intensity increased
dramatically. Politically freedman could vote, there was what s known as The African American
Congress , and the 15th amendment was created. Economically sharecropping was growing in
popularity.
Segregation is separating a certain person from a larger group of people based on what they look like,
for instance an african american person vs a white person. Segregation was shown in many different
ways like, signs that would get put up by a drinking fountain with an arrow pointing one way for
whites and an arrow pointing another way for colored people. In 1896 the case Plessy v. Ferguson
brought a ton of attention to the law that basically said equal but separate . The Article Segregation
said, In 1896, the federal government sanctioned racial segregation, fashioning the constitutional
rationale for keeping the races legally apart. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The African American Congress was created when the first two african americans, were voted into
congress after the Reconstruction Era. Freedman could also vote, the voting rules and regulations were
pretty strict though. President Johnson used the fifteenth amendment to exercise the voting rights of
african american people, or as they were also known as freedmen. The fifteenth amendment states that
citizens should have the right to vote no matter race, color, or previous life styles. All of these different
things changed the life of a freedman because they were so opposite to what they were living like.
Although everything was perfect things were still better. (DOCS

Gene Expression in Eukaryotes
Gene expression in eukaryotes can be broken down into three stages. These stages include
Transcription, RNA processing, and Translation. These steps are similar to gene expression in
prokaryotes but RNA processing is specific to gene expression in eukaryotes.
Transcription
Transcription happens in the cell nucleus. This is where DNA can be found. For example you can use
DNA as instructions to make certain things such as proteins, but, these instructions are in a different
language and you do not understand them, so the workers that will eventually assemble them cannot
work with them. This is where mRNA will come into play. The mRNA will provide the workers or
cells with new instructions that will be used to build the protiens. In transcription DNA is unzipped
and the enzyme RNA polymerase RNA polymerase binds to the promoter region. This starts the
unwinding of the DNA strands, and the polymerase starts RNA synthesis which runs along the
template strand of the DNA. In eukaryotic cells proteins called transcription factors bind to promoters
that include a TATA box, 25 nucleotides upstream from the start of transcription. After, more
transcription factors will bind to the DNA, together with RNA polymerase II, forming the
transcription initiation complex.
The second step of transcription is the process of elongation. This is where the polymerase moves
downstream while it unwinds the DNA and elongates the RNA from 5 to 3 . As the RNA synthesis
continues downstream the new

their relationship contains more love than hate which benefits him. Prospero continuously harasses
Ariel by giving her hope that she will be released shortly while he constantly gives Caliban no hope in

William Shakespeare s The Globe Theatre
During the Elizabethan Era, The Globe Theatre was a very influential upcoming piece of architecture
that even Shakespeare first had his plays performed in. Although it was very difficult to keep the
building standing for long, it inspired many new theatre styles and still lives on today in England. The
Globe Theatre was extremely influential during the Elizabethan Era because of its long history, unique
architecture, and new ways of acting to go along with the new theatre style. Although the majority of
Shakespeare s plays were first produced in the original Globe Theatre, his plays used to be performed
in other forms of amphitheaters, such as halls, inns or open arenas (Cummings). Shakespeare belonged
to a company called Chamberlain s Men. They acted and before The Globe Theatre even existed, they
would perform in The Theatre, originally built and owned by James Burbage (Cummings). The
Burbage family consisted of James, the father and owner of The Theatre, and Cuthbert Burbage, who
was not actor but admired theatre (Cummings). The other son of James Burbage was Robert Burbage,
an actor in the Chamberlain s Men acting company and star of most Shakespearian plays such as
Hamlet, Macbeth, and Romeo and Juliet (Cummings). In 1597, the land that The Theatre was built on
had a lease that was almost up, and Giles Allen, the owner of the land, wished to tear the building
down (Pressley). Because of this dispute, The Globe Theatre came into existence. While working very

variety of instruments such as trumpets, trombones, tubas, French horns, clarinets, flutes, saxophones,
piccolos, drums, electric basses, xylophones, tambourines, and others. For choir, there were a lot of
times when all the voices sand in the same pitch but there were times when they sang in harmony. A
piano is used by an instruction for accompaniment. The group was split into three sections most of the
time, these three sections were soprano, alto, and bass. Sopranos and altos consist of females and
basses consist of male. Sopranos would usually have the melodies in the song and altos would sing an
octave lower and basses would sing very low. However, there were times when altos had the melodies
instead of sopranos. During some songs, the choir would split into four sections, sopranos, altos,
tenors, and basses. While sopranos, altos, and basses consist of homogenous genders, tenors were
heterogeneous. Tenors would sing lower than altos but higher than basses. Before singing any songs,
the choir members warmed up their voices by singing different vowels in ascending and descending C

Summary Of Pina Bausch s Cafe Mller And The Rite Of Spring
Pina Bausch s classic Café Müller and The Rite of Spring seem to come from completely different
worlds. The movement style, narratives, and musical scores are completely contrasting in the pieces.
However, there is one similarity between the two the way Pina intelligently uses the music to inform
her movement. In both works she utilizes both stillness/silence and repetition to create power and
drama to match the music.
As I watched a tall woman, stumble blindly across a crowded stage in silence, the last thing that
crossed my mind was what kind of music could accompany such mundane yet ethereal movement. If I
were to have guessed what musical score would be used for Pina Bausch s abstract choreography, I
surely never would have imagined Henry Purcell s arias from Dido and Aeneas. On a basic level, Pina
s choreography seemed to have no correlation to the music. The sporadic rhythm of her choreography
never seemed to follow the trembling voice of the soprano or dramatic cry of the violins. In fact, as
furniture and dancers unpredictably crash around the stage, her choreography almost serves as a
second, contrasting musical score. At first, the choice of seemed as random as which chair the sleep
walking women ran into yet her musical choice still seemed to fit perfectly.
Oddly enough, the choreography did have an obsessively regular rhythm, it just did not correlate with
the music s rhythms. In her piece, the dancers bursts of violent movement are followed by long

252), influences that affect substance abuse. Feldman (2011) says that some people make using a habit
and it becomes out of control and the toleration for alcohol or drugs becomes so high that they have to
use more and more to feel the effects they once felt. A drug, releases inhibitions and tension, and it
reduces stress (Feldman, 2011, p. 372 373). Feldman says that a lot of college students drink a lot
because they think that everyone else is drinking a lot ( known as the false consensus effect (p. 373)).
Genetics can play a role in addictions as well. Prenatal care is very important. Leukefeld et al. (2009)
suggests that there are several influences to a fetus that can affect them throughout their life.
Leukefeld et al. states that use of drugs and/or alcohol during pregnancy can influence addiction
during the fetus s life time. It is said to be difficult to determine the extreme influence of biological
effects of using on the child. Leukefeld et al. does describe that the immense exposure to different
substances, does have a major influence on a child and their likeliness to use or abuse as well.
Substances include tobacco, caffeine, alcohol, drugs and other day to day things people use that we do
not think about often (Leukfeld et al., 2009).
Assessment
Correct assessment of addiction is very important. There can often be multiple diagnoses of addiction
and mental health disorders. It is imperative that a counselor or someone around

This paper discusses the importance of choosing appropriate channel members and also identifies and

Bert (1998) explains that the best channel that any manufacturer should prioritize on is one that makes
the end product user happiest, so that they are always willing to buy again the same product from the
same channel member. So it s up to the manufacturer to select a marketing channel that best serves the
interests of the customer.
There are various criteria that are used by the manufacturers to evaluate potential intermediaries for
firm s distribution channel. Among this criteria include
1. Lot size
2. Waiting time
DISTRIBUTION CHANNEL
3. Spatial convenience
4. Product variety
5. Service backup
I will discuss each of the above criteria which should be used by the compact disc manufacturer to
evaluate for an appropriate distribution member
Lot size: this refers to the number of units a typical customer is allowed to buy by a marketing channel
in a particular buying occasion. When the lot number is small, then grater output service should be
provided by the channel (Kotler, 2000). In our case above, if the compact disc player manufacturer
selects a channel member that offers small number of CD players to buying customers, this means
increased costs for the manufacturer, and an alternative channel member should be sought.
Waiting time and delivery time: this refers to the length of time that the customer waits, for the receipt
of goods. Customers always prefer delivery

A Quick Review On Reading Skills
A Quick Review
One of the major issues, making it difficult to evaluate How to Read a Book, is that this reviewer did
not have any books in his personal library with which to compare it. Sure, there are websites and
classes one might encounter that will help to improve the person in various aspects their of reading
skills, but too often these mediums seem to be more concerned with rapid and mass consumption with
the least amount of effort to produce an acceptable product. The intent in many approaches to reading
is not Adler and Doren s purpose of increased understanding, but is instead merely gaining
information to finalize a project quickly and advance to the next assignment. This is what made this
book not only unique, but also ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It moves the reader past merely what another thinks about a particular topic, and into higher forms of
learning that develop why one thinks the way they do.
Insight Gained from Reading
First, as previously stated, this reviewer s deficient venture into books of this type limited his
understanding of this topic to only personal experience. So, the four types of reading were not only
new, but also very beneficial. This method might be learned through trial and error, but the way in
which the book showed the process of reading could save the reader not only much trial, but also
plenty of error.
For example, the amount of time that has been lost by not understanding and being effective in
inspectional reading has probably cost many hours of extra perusing or lost information that would
have formed greater understanding. When inspectional reading is done poorly, this then effects how
one fully digests an author s intent in analytical reading. Or, in regards to syntopical reading, the final
project the reader is seeking to accomplish is often not brought to understanding, but merely a
regurgitation of collected information. The way in which the author interdependently built each level
of reading so

The American Imperialism Essay
After the civil war, United States took a turn that led them to solidify as the world power. From the
late 1800s, as the US began to collect power through Cuba, Hawaii, and the Philippines, debate arose
among historians about American imperialism and its behavior. Historians such as William A.
Williams, Arthur Schlesinger, and Stephen Kinzer provides their own vision and how America ought
to be through ideas centered around economics, power, and racial superiority.
Economics becomes a large factor in the American imperialism; but more specifically that expansion

The Isolation Policy And Its Effect On Japanese Society
The Isolation Policy or Sakoku was a policy adopted in 1641, during the time in which the Tokugawa
shogunate was in power, the Edo period (1603 1868). It was enacted by shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu.
The policy, as the name suggests, meant that Japan was isolated from the most of the world. The
bakufu (military government), accomplished this state of isolation by closing the borders, though
contact with China and the Netherlands was still maintained through a single port in Nagasaki. The
policy also meant that Japanese citizens could not leave the country. This isolation was to last until
1854, during which time the shoguns (military leaders) managed to keep Japan relatively peaceful.
The growing western influence in both culture and military technology in Japan was the main reason
for the introduction of the Isolation policy. The shoguns feared that this outside influence would
destabilise the country. This policy had a substantial impact on Japanese society.
This research essay will examine how the Isolation policy, introduced by the Tokugawa shogunate,
was a turning point in Japanese history. The first section of the essay will discuss the rationale for the
policy s introduction. This will be followed by an analysis of the short and long term effects this
policy had on Japanese Society.
The introduction of the Isolation policy was influenced by a number of factors. One of these factors
was the growing power of the daimyo, due to access to new military technology. This was

Argument for Paying College Athletes
Argument for Paying College Athletes Stephen Elting Mercy College
Have you ever heard of a business that made billions of dollars, yet did not pay their employees?
Seems pretty remarkable doesn t it? Well this business is known as the NCAA. According to an article
in the New York Times, the NCAA made $770 million from just the three week Men s Basketball
Tournament, but how much did the athletes who participated in said tournament receive? If you said
zero then you would be correct. The athletes that poured their blood, sweat and tears into practice

But there s nothing wrong with it. And you re not going to convince me that there is something wrong
with it (SI, 2013). This is the feeling of many college athletes that were in the same boat or that are
currently in the boat. They may not know where their next meal is coming from or how they are going
to afford a car payment. Many will take money and not even question it. They know what they are
doing is wrong and they are putting themselves and the school in jeopardy. At the time the reward is
worth the risk they are taking. There are many other cases happening across the country that no one
knows about. It is interesting how Foster came out and said how he felt that it was not a big deal and
that he did not think he was doing anything wrong. He would fall into a large percent of college
athletes that feel it is unfair for them to not see anything from all the revenue they bring in.
Many will argue that college athletes do not need to be compensated because they are student athletes;
and the key word for them is student. One argument against paying college athletes is that they are
basically receiving a free education from a top school. A four year scholarship will cover everything a
student athlete needs. This includes: tuition, room and board, books, medical coverage and meals. For
example, Duke University costs $57,180 to attend (Bleacher Report, 2013). Those on an athletic

While Season felt completely broken down, she knew that she had no choice but to bring her
background in nutrition to her own home. To build Kicker s immunity Season implemented The
Ketogenic Diet. The human body produces cancerous cells daily, so building a strong immunity is
imperative when fighting off cancer cells and the harsh chemicals from treatment. The Ketogenic Diet
is a new cancer treatment, which is free, with virtually no side effects. It can also be conjoined with
other cancer treatments. The diet involves cutting carbohydrates, beginning with the worst
carbohydrate of all, sugar (Johnson L, 2013). It is a high fat, adequate protein, low carbohydrate diet.
The diet forces the body to burn fats rather than carbohydrates. Normally the carbohydrates contained
in food are converted into glucose, which are then transported around the body. However, if there are
little carbohydrates in the diet then the liver converts fat into fatty acids and ketone bodies. Ketone
bodies are water molecules that are produced when the body is consuming very little food, which
mimics fasting. Cancer is an obligate glucose metabolizer because it fuels on sugar. One s normal cells
have the metabolic flexibility to adapt from saving glucose by using ketone bodies (Johnson S, 2014).
This addressed that because cancer

Cardiac Muscle Analysis
A heart is made from Cardiac muscles which are only found in the heart, this muscles share
similarities with skeletal muscles, but they also have special properties which include automaticity and
unlike skeletal muscles, the heart does not have to be stimulated by nerves to contract. This is because
action potentials begin spontaneously in the pacemaker region in the right atrium and spread through
the ventricles in an automatic, rhythmic cycle in the heart all cardia cells can depolarise and
repolarise. This type of actions in the heart occur spontaneous and in a rhythmic fashion, which causes
a normal heart beat to occur. Normal heart beat is maintained by pace maker cells which are in the
sinoatrial node in a mammalian heart (in a frog s heart the sinus venosus have similar functions like
the sinoatrial node). There are also pacemaker cells I the atrioventricular node their cycles are slow
therefore they are overridden by cells of sinoatrial node (German and Stanfield., 2005).

Wilfred Owen And Stevie Smith On Death

Wilfred Owen and Stevie Smith on Death
Death, especially that of loved ones: it can be a sensitive topic for anyone. The main connotation for
the dead is that although not all circumstances can be revealed, the reasons behind their deaths can
eventually be assumed by the living. And while that may be true in the physical sense as the dead
cannot physically talk about their own deaths, two major British poets tend to disagree with that
belief. In their works, both poets Wilfred Owen and Stevie Smith believe that the dead have more
knowledge on the cause of their condition than do the living.
One way Wilfred Owen and Stevie Smith present their beliefs on this issue is by presenting the public
s thoughts on said person after their death. And while the public may be sympathetic at times, often
they are not in the case of Owen; and in the case of Smith, those who are sympathetic tend to not have
a good sense as to what the circumstances were leading up to this person s death. Overall, the public
tends to be ignorant on this topic.
Citing the public s opinions on death is evident in the case of Wilfred Owen s poetry, in both direct
and indirect form. The more indirect approach is in his poem Disabled, although the main character in
question is actually alive. However, the same scenario applies as this character is a permanently
disabled (and depressed) veteran; not to mention Owen (a soldier himself) wrote this in the final year

In this chapter, I present how two pop cultural sites The film The Kids Are All Right, the television
series The Fosters represent butch motherhood. My intention is to expose the discourses in action to
reveal how they operate and contain instruction that delivers as disciplinary performance. I divide the
following sections into individual discussions of each cultural text to reveal the cogs within each site. I
then compare and contrast both texts to investigate the tensions between both productions and how the
discourses thematically collude. Finally, this comparative analysis considers the disciplinary discourse
that develops in accord with gender and motherhood.

Reinforcing The Gender Binary
Jules and Nic are slightly ambiguous representations of butch and femme yet the film overtly
reinforces binary gender roles in its homonormative depiction of the family. Nic presents a more
masculine identity: she has messy, cropped hair, wears little makeup, and wears relaxed fitting jeans
and button down dress shirts. She is quick to anger, aggressive, a workaholic doctor, and operates
more on conservatism and logic. Nic is both the disciplinarian and breadwinner in the family. In
contrast, Jules is more visually feminized. She has long, smooth red hair, wears sexy lacy lingerie, and
flowy or fitted t shirts. Free spirit Jules is a more liberal. She is the nurturing parent emotionally
sensitive, compassionate and craves intimacy, characteristics that construct the femme (Martin 1996).
These characteristics that construct Jules are antithetical to masculinity (Crewe 2015). These roles
suggest that Nic is the man and Jules is the woman. This homonormative discourse continues
throughout the film in a way that Nic becomes dissonant from the role of mother.
As the man in the relationship, Nic performatively embodies a dominant, masculine fatherly figure
(Fox 4). In postulating a masculinized identity, she reinscribes heteronormative conventions. This is
established early

Analysis Of Her Mistress s Clothes By Harriet Cany Peale
Her Mistress s Clothes by Harriet Cany Peale is a wonderful example of a composition that identifies
African American and Anglo Saxon women in 1848, displaying the difference of race and their
identities within this period.
Cany Peale s painting shows an Anglo Saxon woman engaging with an African American woman, at
first glance, one could assume this is a genre painting, that of a peaceful scene demonstrating people
in everyday activities ( Genre Painting ). Two women intimately engaging in a grooming ritual (Byrd)
however this thought is fractured as you see the controlling way the Anglo Saxon woman holds the
bottom of the African American woman s face as she gazes upon herself in the mirror. A spectacle of
power and control that is further illustrated as the Anglo Saxon woman stands slightly taller than the
African American, demonstrating the hierarchy and to establishing their identities as Mistress and
slave.
The slave is compositionally arranged in front of the Mistress in a predominant position, however as
noted in our text this week, most of the slaves placed in the foreground of a painting in this era were
done so in humor, to tease or to make them look immature (Pohl 278). As the title suggests, this slave
has been dressed up by her Mistress in her Mistress s clothing as a way for the Mistress to make fun of
the slave, teasing her with a taste of wealth and upper class. Cany Peale s previous career in fancy
goods gave her the understanding of what was in fashion

Martin Luther Splintering Of Religion
Divine grace was a particularly prominent concern in sixteenth century Europe, it prompted the
splintering of Christendom and was therefore responsible in large part for the subsequent violence.
With the extensive conflict motivated by debates over the delivery of divine grace, it comes as no
surprise that leading figures of the era harbored vastly differing opinions on the subject. Martin
Luther, John Fisher, and Hans Staden, drawing from the exact same source material, came to
drastically different conclusions regarding the bestowment, acceptance, and discovery of divine grace.
Martin Luther s personal interpretation of divine grace differed so greatly from that of other christians
that it facilitated the splintering of a religion. Luther s influential interpretation was formed on the
basis of two claims made by St. Paul in his Letter to the Romans. First, a justified Christian lives by
faith alone, and second Christ is the end and the fulfillment of all commandments for those who
believe in Him, (Luther 22). Luther interpreted St. Paul s words to mean that divine grace is bestowed
through faith, that Faith... will abundantly justify those who have it, such that they require nothing
more to be righteous and pious, (Luther 22). The idea of being saved through nothing but faith
resonated with Luther, a man obsessed with his own repentance, to the point that he visited confession
several times daily (Smith). The inherent nature of faith, as Luther viewed it, was quite

How Technology Has Impacted The Political System
The acronym PERSIA denotes the categories Political, Economic, Religion, Social, Intellectual and
Aesthetic into an easy way of remembering one of many systematic models. These six categories are
used to organize and explain technology s effect and changes over a long period of time. By
categorizing a specific topic or idea, one may easily be able to understand the importance that topic,
idea and technology has impacted a person, culture, country, and even history. Thus, providing a new
outlook and perspective on history and the factors that contributed to the change in history. Firstly, the
PERSIA model breaks into the category, political. Political describes how technology has impacted the
political system. Throughout history, technology has caused government, whether it be state and or
federal government, to update its laws to accommodate and regulate the use of said technology. Many
technological advancements and inventions need to be regulated or added to the law because it causes
chaos and interruption and many of the times it causes danger to society. The next category, economic,
defines how technology influences the financial market in society and not so much on individuals
within society. Rather, it looks at the economics of the society as a whole. By looking at how
technology has impacted the economy at a macro level, it is clearer to see how large corporations and
big business are affected than the individual consumer. Continuing on, technology effects

Casey At The Bat Figurative Language
Casey at the Bat: A Ballad of the Republic Sung in 1888 is a dramatic narrative poem by Ernest
Lawrence Thayer. Casey at the Bat is a ballad of thirteen stanzas documenting a baseball game
between an unnamed opponent and Mudville. The game is coming to an end and Mudville is losing
four to two and the upcoming hitters are especially bad. By a miracle the batters reach base and bring
the best player to bat. The win is just out of reach when Casey strikes out and loses them the game.
Thayer uses figurative language, characterization, and choice of speaker to show the theme of men
and masculinity. By giving Casey all the qualities of a super masculine sports hero, and then having
him fail, Thayer makes us question whether or not those traits truly lead to success. ... Show more

optimism when Casey comes to bat however they give a sense of doom and gloom with Thayer s
choice of diction. He uses words like rumbled, knocked, recoiled, and rattled. It is almost like the fans

The dramatic climax of A Streetcar Named Desire, clearly illustrates the mastery of author Tennessee
Williams. The brilliantly constructed text, with its tragic story and enticing characters, propels the
reader to a point in which he becomes emotionally involved in the dynamics of Williams world.
Unfortunately, many feminists are negatively affected by Williams captivating writing style. In turn,
feminists have developed an array of very strong opinions regarding the climax, often responding with
a very personal and emotive discussion of the issues.

While the feminists sympathize with the character of Blanche whom they perceive as a delicate moth
like creature, they should also accept the fact that she has been mingling in the affairs of spiders and is
now caught in the web she has spun. This aspect of symbolism is usually not discussed by feminists,
yet it is a critical feature of the text that must be considered to obtain a more profound understanding.
Symbolism is very important when analyzing the conclusion to the play. These factors combined are a
very important element of the text. Therefore, it is difficult to accept many feminist arguments without
linking them to the other aspects of the play. While feminists often claim that Stanley is utterly
dependent upon other people, they do not offer reasons for this. However, it is obvious that Elysian
Fields is a society built on desire, and once deprived of this through the intervention of Blanche,
Stanley becomes very vulnerable. This is the kind of reasoning not offered by feminists who focus
only on condemning the actions of Stanley while failing to consider his viewpoint. Therefore, when it
comes to the climax, it is very important to carefully analyze how Stanley is being presented, as this
has a dire effect on the plight of his character, both during the rape and the conclusion.

A Brief Note On The Scottish Coastal Waters
Cetaceans in Scottish waters
Abstract
Scottish coastal waters accommodate several populations of cetacean species. However, the
interference of human activities on the marine habitat has been increasing gradually and thus,
impacted the marine creatures negatively. This paper introduces different cetaceans that can be found
in seas surrounding Scotland, threats that can affect them and how humans can tackle the problems
through conservation and management. Some suggestions may not be successfully carried out but they
still act as potential methods that can be applicable.
Introduction
The seas around Scotland are the richest seas in Europe for their marine mammals, holding over
twenty species of cetaceans. Both residential and migratory communities are increasingly interfered
by human activities such as fishery by catch, shipping, tourism and pollution, which are disrupting the
natural behavioural patterns of marine creatures, causing injuries and even death. To prevent these
marine mammals from extinction, we have to take actions to protect them and increase their
population abundantly. The majority of Cetacean species are marine; some estuarine and freshwater
species can be found in tropical and sub tropical niches. Cetaceans are aquatic, they have undergone
more extreme anatomical adaptation then their terrestrial ancestors. The mysticetes perform a lot of
long distance seasonal migrations, while odontocetes also migrate seasonally but without a common

(Jarvenpaa amp; Leidner, 2006). When a virtual team is established there are many reasons why the
team was developed, the main reason would be physical locations from one another. When teams are

Even though a team is only communicating in the virtual reality, there are many aspects of the first

Dr. Seuss How The Grinch Stole Christmas
Defined as a psychological and psycho therapeutic theory conceived in the late nineteenth and early
twentieth centuries by Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud. (Concepts) Psychoanalysis is concerned
with the concepts surrounding freudian slips, anger, and violence. Creator Sigmund Freud also
discovered that there are three parts of the unconscious mind known as the id, the ego, and the ultra
ego, which influence the thoughts, and behaviours experienced within a person or a fictional character.
Upon analysing Dr. Seuss How the Grinch Stole Christmas, it tells the story of a resentful, cave
dwelling creature with a heart two sizes too small , (Seuss) named the Grinch. Throughout the poem,
there are many instances where Freud s psychoanalytic theory comes into play. Dr. Seuss uses

Theme Of Technology In The Veldt
Technology is viewed as revolutionary, inventions that make our lives simply better by the touch of a
screen to the click of a button. However, in the short story The Veldt , Ray Bradbury portrays that
technology, despite its benefits, has many significant flaws. The improper and overuse of technology
in The Veldt causes the characters to forget how to live for themselves. The technology takes over
their independence as well as their personal lives and relationships. In The Veldt , Ray Bradbury
asserts that becoming reliant on technology causes a strain on family relations, and can be dangerous
to the way one functions as a human, taking away one s purpose in life. To begin with, the Hadley
family abuses the luxurious technology in their home, which leads to the replacement of love and real
relationships to that of technology. The dynamic of the Hadley family is influenced by technology, and
its overuse causes the hindrance of affection in the children s relationship with their parents. When
psychologist David McClean comes to discuss the problematic African Veldt in the nursery, he
realizes the root of the problem and says: You ve let this room and this house replace you and your
wife in your children s affections (Bradbury 8). This quote conveys that as much as the children have
fallen in love with their nursery, it is taking away the love they should have for their parents.
Additionally, the Hadley children, Peter and Wendy, are replacing their parents with their beloved
nursery, completely shutting out their parents as a whole. As David McClean further analyzes the
children and the problems in their nursery, he exclaims that This room is their mother and father, far
more important in their lives than their real parents (8). Wendy and Peter have made the relationship
with their parents obsolete, as they now consider the nursery a substitute for their mom and dad.
Overall, the Hadley children have completely replaced their parents with technology, displaying the
cautions of technology straining familial relationships. Next, the Hadley s reliance on technology
revolves around and takes over their daily lives, restricting the way they should be functioning as
humans. The HappyLife home that the

Donovan Implications
We laugh about the person who says, I know I m right; don t confuse me with arguments . And yet
there are times when we find ourselves wanting to say that too. For there are situations in which we
feel sure that we know something, even though if asked to give a good argument to back up our claim
we are at a loss to know quite how to do so. I know you re the person I spoke to on the bus yesterday. I
know I have two hands. I know it is wrong to let that child starve. I know that six minus four leaves
two. Our experience of being confident that we are right in cases like those is often called intuition.
Intuitive knowing seems to be a direct, convincing way of knowing, which needs no further argument.
And it is a perfectly ordinary, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is keen to point out that it is not a type of argument ( direct ) and that it is very hard to doubt it (
convincing ). By defining intuition in this way Donovan is treating it as a possibly genuine way to
gain knowledge, distinct from intellectual argument.
Finally, Donovan asks the question, are there such things as intuitions in religious matters too? This is
his key question. Given that he accepts that intuition works on some level he wants to know whether it
can be extended to also work on matters of religion, such as whether God exists and if so, what he is
like. Donovan wants to explore whether religious experience can be a basis for intuitive knowledge of
God. This is unlike Swinburne s argument from religious experience where the conclusion God exists
is deduced from premises. Instead it is not an argument at all, but an immediate apprehension of
knowledge of God from experience of God.
These are the three key aspects of Donovan s argument in the above passage. Whilst there are no
secondary points to explain the section does link to several key debates in the philosophy of religion.
Firstly, in discussing whether religious intuition exists Donovan is contributing to the debate over
whether God exists. In addition to philosophers such as Swinburne and Paley, Donovan is offering the
possibility of an alternative way to gain objective knowledge of God/that he exists

The Slender Body By Greg Garber
Sacrifices of the Body In assessing the good life, intrinsic and extrinsic rewards are a vital component
of reaching it. Greg Garber s five part series on the life of Mike Webster, discusses the sacrifices a
football player must undertake in order to be successful. The dangers, both mentally and physically
that a football player faces weekly, are a part of the job that can have lifelong consequences. One
could easily find himself with permanent disabling injuries. Equally dangerous are eating disorders,
which Susan Bordo explains in the chapter, Reading the Slender Body, from her book, Unbearable
Weight: Feminism, Western Culture, and the Body. Social pressures and expectations can play a
significant role in how one views his or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the process, he ended up with many physical and mental aliments that adversely effected his
mobility and mindset later in life. According to Garber, by the end of his 17 year football career
ended, Webster sustained numerous injuries that included broken fingers, permanent damage to his
back along with his knees, right shoulder, and right heal. In addition, he suffered from severe head
trauma that caused continuous headaches (Blood and Guts). Obviously, he had the mental fortitude,
especially when he was younger, to endure the pain and suffering that accompany physical injuries,
but eventually the pain became unbearable, even for a man of his stature. Webster s physical and
mental aliments began to control him, which in turn affected his intrinsic happiness that is a
requirement to reach the good life. As external forces can severely affect one s inner happiness,
Webster s extrinsic encounters did not assist in providing him with a good life. From failed business
ventures, which culminated with seizing of his assets, to a failed coaching position and an ill timed
divorce (Man on the Moon). The worst extrinsic injustice Webster suffered was at the hands of his
former employer, the National Football League. Though the league did disburse disability payments to
him, it was five years after Webster retired (Sifting through the Ashes). With the amount of injuries
Webster sustained, the payments could have helped him immensely, which in turn, could have

Black Lives Matter Leadership
All the great political movements succeeded due to the leaders behind them who directed the focus of
their supporters to achieve the respective goal. Although, currently the founders of the Black Lives
Matter believe that it is not in the interest of this movement to have a central face, it is inevitable for
this great movement to have a brave leader. Times have significantly changed since the Civil Rights
movement, but Black Lives Matter needs a leader like Malcolm X, who was outspoken in his ideas so
this movement can successfully tackle complex, modern political systems and achieve its goals.

Race is an artificial social construction rooted in the structural dynamics of exploitation, power and
privilege that was forced upon original residents of colonies at the outset of the expansion of European
capitalism. (Marable) For most Americans, present day America still remains segregated as a result of
discrimination which throughout history has been used in a direct behavior against African American
people. Race according to Marable is an artificial construction, however, its impacts are real and
devastating as it stops the American nation from maximizing its potential, by discriminating most of
the times against the best suited candidates in various fields. When coupled with social anarchy
resulting from racism, it marks the political tension in the community. Many scholars have argued that
race is a critical element in the formation of political ideology, (Rueter) and it can be backed by
evidence from the on going US presidential race in 2016 for both Democrats and Republicans where
race serves as the issue which would play role in determining the 45th US

The Work Of Brameld, Horton, And Freire
Names associated with Social Reconstructionism include, among others, Theodore Brameld, Myles
Horton, Morris R. Mitchel, William O. Stanley, Paulo Freire, Ismail Hakki Tonguch, Neil Postman,
and Charles Weingartner. Each of these educational philosophers have greatly shaped the
reconstruction ideologies; however, for the purpose of this paper, it was considered to analyze the
work of Brameld, Horton, and Freire. Theodore Brameld (1904 1987) is considered to be the founder
of the social reconstruction movement. The Brameld s ideas to understand human condition were
nurtured by thinkers such as Freud and Marx, as well as by sociologists such as W. L. Warner
(Thomas, 1999). Brameld s ideologies were conceived through a curriculum experiment conducted in
a rural high school in Minnesota during 1944 to 1945 (Stone, 1995). In this experiment, called the
Floodwood Project, Brameld cooperatively participated with this high school s students and teachers
to answer this question: What kind of a society do we, as young citizens, want to build for tomorrow .
The students, who participated in this study, drew characteristics of an ideal society by working from
their expectations and experiences about what a good society should provide. Brameld developed
during the next two decades the outcomes in sight of: 1) determine values through an inductive
approach, 2) social policy could be understood under the consensus of the learning group, 3)
indoctrinaction could be addressed by

Historically, slaves were freed either by manumission (granted freedom by their owner) or emancipation (granted freedom as part of a larger group). The life of a freedman changed in the years 1865 through 1896 in many different ways. Socially the amounts of segregation intensity increased dramatically. Politically freedman could vote, there was what s known as The African American Congress , and the 15th amendment was created. Economically sharecropping was growing in popularity. Segregation is separating a certain person from a larger group of people based on what they look like, for instance an african american person vs a white person. Segregation was shown in many different ways like, signs that would get put up by a drinking fountain with an arrow pointing one way for whites and an arrow pointing another way for colored people. In 1896 the case Plessy v. Ferguson brought a ton of attention to the law that basically said equal but separate . • 4. Gene Expression in Eukaryotes Gene expression in eukaryotes can be broken down into three stages. These stages include Transcription, RNA processing, and Translation. These steps are similar to gene expression in prokaryotes but RNA processing is specific to gene expression in eukaryotes. Transcription Transcription happens in the cell nucleus. This is where DNA can be found. For example you can use DNA as instructions to make certain things such as proteins, but, these instructions are in a different language and you do not understand them, so the workers that will eventually assemble them cannot work with them. This is where mRNA will come into play. The mRNA will provide the workers or cells with new instructions that will be used to build the protiens. In transcription DNA is unzipped and the enzyme RNA polymerase RNA polymerase binds to the promoter region. This starts the unwinding of the DNA strands, and the polymerase starts RNA synthesis which runs along the template strand of the DNA. In eukaryotic cells proteins called transcription factors bind to promoters that include a TATA box, 25 nucleotides upstream from the start of transcription. After, more transcription factors will bind to the DNA, together with RNA polymerase II, forming the transcription initiation complex. The second step of transcription is the process of elongation. This is where the polymerase moves downstream while it unwinds the DNA and elongates the RNA from 5 to 3 . As the RNA synthesis continues downstream the new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Globe Theatre was extremely influential during the Elizabethan Era because of its long history, unique architecture, and new ways of acting to go along with the new theatre style. Although the majority of Shakespeare s plays were first produced in the original Globe Theatre, his plays used to be performed in other forms of amphitheaters, such as halls, inns or open arenas (Cummings). Shakespeare belonged to a company called Chamberlain s Men. They acted and before The Globe Theatre even existed, they would perform in The Theatre, originally built and owned by James Burbage (Cummings). The Burbage family consisted of James, the father and owner of The Theatre, and Cuthbert Burbage, who was not actor but admired theatre (Cummings). The other son of James Burbage was Robert Burbage, an actor in the Chamberlain s Men acting company and star of most Shakespearian plays such as Hamlet, Macbeth, and Romeo and Juliet (Cummings). In 1597, the land that The Theatre was built on had a lease that was almost up, and Giles Allen, the owner of the land, wished to tear the building down (Pressley). Because of this dispute, The Globe Theatre came into existence. While working very fast, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Summary Of Pina Bausch s Cafe Mller And The Rite Of Spring Pina Bausch s classic Café Müller and The Rite of Spring seem to come from completely different worlds. The movement style, narratives, and musical scores are completely contrasting in the pieces. However, there is one similarity between the two the way Pina intelligently uses the music to inform her movement. In both works she utilizes both stillness/silence and repetition to create power and drama to match the music. As I watched a tall woman, stumble blindly across a crowded stage in silence, the last thing that crossed my mind was what kind of music could accompany such mundane yet ethereal movement. If I were to have guessed what musical score would be used for Pina Bausch s abstract choreography, I surely never would have imagined Henry Purcell s arias from Dido and Aeneas. On a basic level, Pina s choreography seemed to have no correlation to the music. The sporadic rhythm of her choreography never seemed to follow the trembling voice of the soprano or dramatic cry of the violins. In fact, as furniture and dancers unpredictably crash around the stage, her choreography almost serves as a second, contrasting musical score. At first, the choice of seemed as random as which chair the sleep walking women ran into yet her musical choice still seemed to fit perfectly. Oddly enough, the choreography did have an obsessively regular rhythm, it just did not correlate with the music s rhythms. So, the four types of reading were not only new, but also very beneficial. This method might be learned through trial and error, but the way in which the book showed the process of reading could save the reader not only much trial, but also plenty of error. When inspectional reading is done poorly, this then effects how one fully digests an author s intent in analytical reading. • 17. The Isolation Policy And Its Effect On Japanese Society The Isolation Policy or Sakoku was a policy adopted in 1641, during the time in which the Tokugawa shogunate was in power, the Edo period (1603 1868). It was enacted by shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. The policy, as the name suggests, meant that Japan was isolated from the most of the world. The bakufu (military government), accomplished this state of isolation by closing the borders, though contact with China and the Netherlands was still maintained through a single port in Nagasaki. The policy also meant that Japanese citizens could not leave the country. This isolation was to last until 1854, during which time the shoguns (military leaders) managed to keep Japan relatively peaceful. The growing western influence in both culture and military technology in Japan was the main reason for the introduction of the Isolation policy. The shoguns feared that this outside influence would destabilise the country. This policy had a substantial impact on Japanese society. This research essay will examine how the Isolation policy, introduced by the Tokugawa shogunate, was a turning point in Japanese history. The first section of the essay will discuss the rationale for the policy s introduction. This will be followed by an analysis of the short and long term effects this policy had on Japanese Society. Ketone bodies are water molecules that are produced when the body is consuming very little food, which mimics fasting. Cancer is an obligate glucose metabolizer because it fuels on sugar. Cardiac Muscle Analysis A heart is made from Cardiac muscles which are only found in the heart, this muscles share similarities with skeletal muscles, but they also have special properties which include automaticity and unlike skeletal muscles, the heart does not have to be stimulated by nerves to contract. This type of actions in the heart occur spontaneous and in a rhythmic fashion, which causes a normal heart beat to occur. • 23. Wilfred Owen And Stevie Smith On Death Chris Shea ENG 477 Professor Heidi Hartwig 04/21/16 Wilfred Owen and Stevie Smith on Death Death, especially that of loved ones: it can be a sensitive topic for anyone. The main connotation for the dead is that although not all circumstances can be revealed, the reasons behind their deaths can eventually be assumed by the living. And while that may be true in the physical sense as the dead cannot physically talk about their own deaths, two major British poets tend to disagree with that belief. In their works, both poets Wilfred Owen and Stevie Smith believe that the dead have more knowledge on the cause of their condition than do the living. One way Wilfred Owen and Stevie Smith present their beliefs on this issue is by presenting the public s thoughts on said person after their death. And while the public may be sympathetic at times, often they are not in the case of Owen; and in the case of Smith, those who are sympathetic tend to not have a good sense as to what the circumstances were leading up to this person s death. Overall, the public tends to be ignorant on this topic. Citing the public s opinions on death is evident in the case of Wilfred Owen s poetry, in both direct and indirect form. The more indirect approach is in his poem Disabled, although the main character in question is actually alive. Cany Peale s painting shows an Anglo Saxon woman engaging with an African American woman, at first glance, one could assume this is a genre painting, that of a peaceful scene demonstrating people in everyday activities ( Genre Painting ). Two women intimately engaging in a grooming ritual (Byrd) however this thought is fractured as you see the controlling way the Anglo Saxon woman holds the bottom of the African American woman s face as she gazes upon herself in the mirror. A spectacle of power and control that is further illustrated as the Anglo Saxon woman stands slightly taller than the African American, demonstrating the hierarchy and to establishing their identities as Mistress and slave. The slave is compositionally arranged in front of the Mistress in a predominant position, however as noted in our text this week, most of the slaves placed in the foreground of a painting in this era were done so in humor, to tease or to make them look immature (Pohl 278). As the title suggests, this slave has been dressed up by her Mistress in her Mistress s clothing as a way for the Mistress to make fun of the slave, teasing her with a taste of wealth and upper class. Cany Peale s previous career in fancy goods gave her the understanding of what was in fashion ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Martin Luther Splintering Of Religion Divine grace was a particularly prominent concern in sixteenth century Europe, it prompted the splintering of Christendom and was therefore responsible in large part for the subsequent violence. With the extensive conflict motivated by debates over the delivery of divine grace, it comes as no surprise that leading figures of the era harbored vastly differing opinions on the subject. Martin Luther, John Fisher, and Hans Staden, drawing from the exact same source material, came to drastically different conclusions regarding the bestowment, acceptance, and discovery of divine grace. Martin Luther s personal interpretation of divine grace differed so greatly from that of other christians that it facilitated the splintering of a religion. Luther s influential interpretation was formed on the basis of two claims made by St. Paul in his Letter to the Romans. First, a justified Christian lives by faith alone, and second Christ is the end and the fulfillment of all commandments for those who believe in Him, (Luther 22). Luther interpreted St. Paul s words to mean that divine grace is bestowed through faith, that Faith... will abundantly justify those who have it, such that they require nothing more to be righteous and pious, (Luther 22). The idea of being saved through nothing but faith resonated with Luther, a man obsessed with his own repentance, to the point that he visited confession several times daily (Smith). How Technology Has Impacted The Political System The acronym PERSIA denotes the categories Political, Economic, Religion, Social, Intellectual and Aesthetic into an easy way of remembering one of many systematic models. These six categories are used to organize and explain technology s effect and changes over a long period of time. By categorizing a specific topic or idea, one may easily be able to understand the importance that topic, idea and technology has impacted a person, culture, country, and even history. Thus, providing a new outlook and perspective on history and the factors that contributed to the change in history. Firstly, the PERSIA model breaks into the category, political. Political describes how technology has impacted the political system. Throughout history, technology has caused government, whether it be state and or federal government, to update its laws to accommodate and regulate the use of said technology. Many technological advancements and inventions need to be regulated or added to the law because it causes chaos and interruption and many of the times it causes danger to society. The next category, economic, defines how technology influences the financial market in society and not so much on individuals within society. Rather, it looks at the economics of the society as a whole. By looking at how technology has impacted the economy at a macro level, it is clearer to see how large corporations and big business are affected than the individual consumer. • 33. Casey At The Bat Figurative Language Casey at the Bat: A Ballad of the Republic Sung in 1888 is a dramatic narrative poem by Ernest Lawrence Thayer. Casey at the Bat is a ballad of thirteen stanzas documenting a baseball game between an unnamed opponent and Mudville. The game is coming to an end and Mudville is losing four to two and the upcoming hitters are especially bad. By a miracle the batters reach base and bring the best player to bat. The win is just out of reach when Casey strikes out and loses them the game. Thayer uses figurative language, characterization, and choice of speaker to show the theme of men and masculinity. By giving Casey all the qualities of a super masculine sports hero, and then having him fail, Thayer makes us question whether or not those traits truly lead to success. ... This aspect of symbolism is usually not discussed by feminists, yet it is a critical feature of the text that must be considered to obtain a more profound understanding. Symbolism is very important when analyzing the conclusion to the play. These factors combined are a very important element of the text. Therefore, it is difficult to accept many feminist arguments without linking them to the other aspects of the play. While feminists often claim that Stanley is utterly dependent upon other people, they do not offer reasons for this. However, it is obvious that Elysian Fields is a society built on desire, and once deprived of this through the intervention of Blanche, Stanley becomes very vulnerable. This is the kind of reasoning not offered by feminists who focus only on condemning the actions of Stanley while failing to consider his viewpoint. This paper introduces different cetaceans that can be found in seas surrounding Scotland, threats that can affect them and how humans can tackle the problems through conservation and management. Some suggestions may not be successfully carried out but they still act as potential methods that can be applicable. Introduction The seas around Scotland are the richest seas in Europe for their marine mammals, holding over twenty species of cetaceans. Both residential and migratory communities are increasingly interfered by human activities such as fishery by catch, shipping, tourism and pollution, which are disrupting the natural behavioural patterns of marine creatures, causing injuries and even death. To prevent these marine mammals from extinction, we have to take actions to protect them and increase their population abundantly. • 41. Theme Of Technology In The Veldt Technology is viewed as revolutionary, inventions that make our lives simply better by the touch of a screen to the click of a button. However, in the short story The Veldt , Ray Bradbury portrays that technology, despite its benefits, has many significant flaws. The improper and overuse of technology in The Veldt causes the characters to forget how to live for themselves. The technology takes over their independence as well as their personal lives and relationships. In The Veldt , Ray Bradbury asserts that becoming reliant on technology causes a strain on family relations, and can be dangerous to the way one functions as a human, taking away one s purpose in life. To begin with, the Hadley family abuses the luxurious technology in their home, which leads to the replacement of love and real relationships to that of technology. The dynamic of the Hadley family is influenced by technology, and its overuse causes the hindrance of affection in the children s relationship with their parents. When psychologist David McClean comes to discuss the problematic African Veldt in the nursery, he realizes the root of the problem and says: You ve let this room and this house replace you and your wife in your children s affections (Bradbury 8). This quote conveys that as much as the children have fallen in love with their nursery, it is taking away the love they should have for their parents. Additionally, the Hadley children, Peter and Wendy, are replacing their parents with their beloved nursery, completely shutting out their parents as a whole. As David McClean further analyzes the children and the problems in their nursery, he exclaims that This room is their mother and father, far more important in their lives than their real parents (8). Wendy and Peter have made the relationship with their parents obsolete, as they now consider the nursery a substitute for their mom and dad. Overall, the Hadley children have completely replaced their parents with technology, displaying the cautions of technology straining familial relationships. By defining intuition in this way Donovan is treating it as a possibly genuine way to gain knowledge, distinct from intellectual argument. Finally, Donovan asks the question, are there such things as intuitions in religious matters too? This is his key question. Given that he accepts that intuition works on some level he wants to know whether it can be extended to also work on matters of religion, such as whether God exists and if so, what he is like. Donovan wants to explore whether religious experience can be a basis for intuitive knowledge of God. This is unlike Swinburne s argument from religious experience where the conclusion God exists is deduced from premises. Instead it is not an argument at all, but an immediate apprehension of knowledge of God from experience of God. These are the three key aspects of Donovan s argument in the above passage. Whilst there are no secondary points to explain the section does link to several key debates in the philosophy of religion.
