Resistance To Affirmative Action
Resistance to affirmative action has existed from the time it was introduced (Allen, 2011; Kaufmann,
2007), and in many instances, the U.S. Supreme Court has played a crucial role in determining the
extent to which it can achieve its original goals (Zamani Brown, 2003). One of the earliest cases to
challenge the use of affirmative action was DeFunis v. Odegaard (1973), of which the court found the
University of Washington Law School s use of race in admissions to be unconstitutional (Platt, 2007;
Zamani Brown, 2003). The law school was accused of having separate admissions procedures for
students of color by giving less weight to their predicted first year averages. As such, DeFunis argued
that underqualified students of color had been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kirwan (1994), a federal court ruled on the constitutionality of race based merit scholarships. In this
case, the merit based Benjamin Banneker Scholarship, earmarked for African American students,
sought to attract academically talented African American students to the University of Maryland at
College Park. The court ruled it was not permissible to maintain separate financial merit awards
according to race (Shapiro, 1995), illustrating the increasing difficulties postsecondary institutions
faced to designate a fellowship or scholarship specifically for racial/ethnic minorities (Platt, 2007). In
fact, efforts to prohibit affirmative action in the United States really ramped up in the mid 1990 s. For
instance, in 1996 the Supreme Court upheld California s Proposition 209, an amendment to the state
constitution that banned both discrimination and affirmative action programs that give preferences to
groups or individuals based on their race, gender, color, ethnicity, or national origin. To that end, race
could not be used as a consideration (e.g., admissions and hiring decisions) in public education
(Alvarez Bedolla, 2004). In addition, in Hopwood v. Texas (1996), the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals
issued a decision ending affirmative action in both private and public college admissions in Texas,
Louisiana, and Mississippi. More litigation continued in 1997 (Gratz v. Bollinger and Grutter v.
Bollinger) that challenged the use of affirmative action in undergraduate and law school admissions,
and in 1998, Washington voters passed Initiative 200, a nearly identical policy to Prop. 209. In 1999,
Florida Governor Jeb Bush pre issued an executive order ending consideration of race and ethnicity in
public college and university admissions, public employment, and government contracting. Such
attacks on affirmative action policies are prompting colleges and universities to abandon race sensitive
programs, such as scholarships, academic enrichment programs,

The Achievements Of The Roman Republic
The key feature of almost all lasting, successful military establishments is a professional base of
soldiery. Having this in place is the gateway to repeatable military triumph. The first state to
universally construct a professional military was the Roman Republic, beginning in 107 BC. Gaius
Marius, Praetor and later Consul of the Republic, was the main figure in bringing about these changes.
He, among other reformations, eliminated the requirement of land ownership as a prerequisite of army
service, along with large scale standardization of equipment. These were some of the ways that Marius
was able to establish one of the best and longest lasting military forces in all history. As the
professional soldiery of the Roman Republic grew, so too did the ease with which it subjugated and
conquered its neighbors.
Part of current understanding of the Roman Army, especially during the Republic and before, can be
concluded from a study of Roman political history. Rome began as a city founded by Romulus after he
killed his brother Remus, both descended from Aeneas, who escaped the Sack of Troy of Illiad fame,
or so the legend goes. The young city spent the better part of 200 years under the yoke of the Etruscan
League, a confederation of Latin Tribes primarily to the east and north of Rome in Central Italy. The
Etruscans were in turn fond of trading with the Greeks, not just for wealth, but also for ideas. Until c.
550 BC the Romans did not normally use a state controlled army, but

Metaphors Of The Song Over The Rainbow
The lyrics of Over the Rainbow has the changes of fortune which leads us to believe that it has many
metaphors of the journey of an Odyssey. Over the Rainbow has a part where the singer talks about a
far away place. Dorothy says, Somewhere over the Rainbow, Way up high, There s a land that i heard
of, Once in a lullaby. This portion of the song tells about the far away place that is either mysterious or
magical in a sense, this tells of a new place that a journey could be taken to get to there. A portion of
the song tells of a magic place where wishes happen. Dorothy says, Somewhere over the Rainbow,
Skies are blue, And the dreams you dare to Dream, Really do come true. This could be compared to an
Odyssey because when an Odyssey happens, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Scarecrow in the wizard of oz is lacking a brain all together and believes he cannot think for
himself. The Scarecrow replies, some people without a brain sure do talk a lot. The scarecrow talking
to Dorothy and saying that, is him saying you are not bright. The point of the scarecrow is to show
how Dorothy believes she is not smart, how she wants everyone to think of things for her instead of
her thinking things for herself. The Tin man is someone who lacks a heart, he believes he can not
show any love for anyone. The wizard says, Love does not define you from the lack of a heart, love
happens when you are loved by others. The purpose of having the Tin Man in the Movie is to express
how Dorothy believes she does not show enough compassion/ love to her family, and deeply down she
feels incapable of loving them. Lastly we have the Cowardly lion, the Lion is shown to be Cowardly/
not having courage. The Lion says, I m scared!! Tell me when it s over! The implication of the Lion is
to show Dorothy s fear of the unknown, Dorothy would rather let others do the scary, unwanted task
because she does not have the courage to do

Essay about The Life of Abraham Lincoln
The Life of Abraham Lincoln
Although other states such as Indiana lay claim to his birth, most sources agree that Abraham Lincoln
was born on February 12, 1809, in a backwoods cabin in Hodgeville, Kentucky. In an interview during
his campaign for the presidency in 1860 Lincoln described his adolescence as quot;the short and
simple annals of the poor. quot; (p 30). His father Thomas was a farmer who married Nancy Hanks,
his mother, in 1806.
Lincoln had one sister, Sarah, who was born in 1807.The Lincoln family was more financially
comfortable than most despite the common historical picture of complete poverty. They moved to
Indiana because of the shaky system of land titles in Kentucky. Because the Lincoln s arrived in

The next step for such an ambitious man was obvious he entered politics, finishing eighth out of
thirteen in a race for the Illinois House of Representatives in August of 1832.Abraham Lincoln was a
strong supporter of Whig founder Henry Clay and his quot;American System. quot; This system that
arose from the National Rebublicans of 1824 was in opposition to the powerful Democratic party of
President Andrew Jackson. Lincoln agreed with Clay that the government should be a positive force
with the purpose of serving the people. Internal improvements were high on both mens lists, and this
stand made the relatively unknown Lincoln popular in rural Illinois from the start.
As the Whigs rose in stature throughout the 1830 s, so did Lincoln, but not without paying his dues
along the way.For eighty days in the spring and early summer of 1832 Lincoln served in the military.
On a constant search for Black Hawk, war leader of the Sauk and Fox Indians, he never saw any
fighting but he did prove to be a superior leader of men in some of the most trying situations,
including threats of desertion. quot;In return for his eleven and a half weeks of service Lincoln earned
a mere $125, but the connections that he made with future leaders of Illinois and the experiencing of
life from a soldier s viewpoint proved to be priceless in his future political career quot; (p 80). During
this time Lincoln ran for and won a seat in the Illinois Legislature with bipartisan support. In 1846

Uncertainty And Imperfect Information On Entrepreneurship
Uncertainty and Imperfect information in entrepreneurship are two important concepts that should be
considered in the role of entrepreneurs. According to (Klir, 1999) uncertainty has many methods and
dimensions and can include concepts such as vagueness, disagreement and conflict, imprecision and
non specificity The term uncertainty can be defined broadly as any deviation from the unachievable
ideal of completely deterministic knowledge of the relevant system (Walker, 2003). Uncertainty could
mean unpredictability, doubt or fear of the unknown. It has to do with the risk entrepreneurs take in
business. Imperfect information on the other hand means lack of adequate information before
embarking on the business. It can also be viewed as incomplete collection of facts or flawed
communication. These two concepts play vital roles in businesses and if not carefully considered and
handled, they can have adverse effects on businesses.
Who Are Entrepreneurs?
An entrepreneur is a person who creates new business, taking risks in accomplishing the objectives
which they intend to make profits and growth by recognising vital opportunities (Burdus, 2010). They
are individuals who innovate, recognise business opportunities, gather and co ordinate new blends of
resources {i.e. production functions) in other to extract the most profits from their innovations in an
uncertain environment (Rapheal Amit, 1993) Entrepreneurs are private business owners. They are self
starters and optimistic

Surfboard Care Research Paper
Whether you just bought your first surfboard or your third, proper surfboard care and maintenance is a
topic you need to be familiar with. Not knowing what you should do and what you shouldn t do with
your board can reek havoc on its well being. To help you keep your board in good health and you
successfully riding waves, we ve created a list of surfboard do s and don t every serious surfer needs
to follow. The Don ts of Surfboard Care Leaving your surfboard in a sweltering hot car or sitting
outside for long periods of time in direct sunlight is never a good idea. Both circumstances can lead to
a damaged board. Extreme heat and drastic temperature changes can weaken or crack the outer layer,
which may eventually cause delamination, meaning the outer coating separates from the foam core.
Continuing to surf on a dinged up surfboard is asking for trouble. As time passes, water will enter your
surfboard, damaging the foam core. Getting your board fixed as soon as possible is a must; otherwise,
you ll be left with a waterlogged mess. If you need to fix a ding temporarily, you can use wax, but ...

Salt water left on your board will damage it in the long run. Mother nature can be harsh on your
surfboard. Storing it inside will save it from the sun, rain, and even morning dew. Unfortunately, if
you do leave your board outside for prolonged periods of time you could end up damaging its
structural integrity. Buy a board bag to keep your surfboard safe while you travel to and from the
beach. It s also a good idea to dry your board off before putting it in its bag. Putting your surfboard in
soaking wet will eventually lead to delamination. Always use a leash when surfing near rocky breaks.

Hitler s New Man
Upon achieving power in 1933, Hitler and the Nazi state began to implement increasingly severe
measures aimed at segregating and ultimately removing the Jewish people from Germany and
eventually all of Europe. Hitler s further achievement was to create the new man. However,
meanwhile the creation of Hitler s new man was giving Germany a sense of destiny, the Jewish life
was being constricted and erased. But what exactly was this idea of a new man? The ultimate attitude
behind this new achievement was to further purify the Aryan race. One of the first steps towards purity
were the Aryan passports, but these were just the beginning of a much broader effort or revolution for
Germans to accept their racial responsibilities. Genetic cultivation ... Show more content on

The second law established who would be granted full political and civic rights and those who would
now be deprived of them. Citizenship rights were to be granted to those who were citizens of the
Reich, which were only individuals classified as being of German or related blood , therefore Jews
were excluded from any and all citizenship rights becoming state subjects, essentially making them
foreigners in their own country. Kristallnacht refers to Jewish pogroms that took place in 1938. These
attacks took place against synagogues, Jewish owned businesses, other Jewish establishments, and
Jewish citizens in general. This was also the start to organized Nazi attacks, and the mass incarceration
of the Jews. There was no clear Instructions on how to execute the violence, so it caused the
destroying of Jewish property and inhumane treatment of Jewish people. Kristallnacht essentially
became the turning point in the Nazis persecution of the Jewish people. It expanded the efforts to
removed Jews from German economics and social life. Kristallnacht and the events that followed
essentially showed the Nazi regime that they can count on the nationwide support of anti Semitism
from the general public. This showed the Nazis that they can easily move forward with their plans
without a lot of opposition

John Scopes Trial Analysis
The Scopes Trial, a Dayton, Tennessee legal case involving the teaching of evolution within the public
school system, induced a pivotal point in American history. This world famous trial represents the
ongoing conflict between science and theology, faith and reason, individual freedom of speech, and
overruling opinion of the majority. The preeminent purpose of the case was to decide not only the fate
of an evolution theory teacher by the name of John Scopes, but also to decide if fundamentalists or
modernists would rule American culture and education. An object of profound publicity, the trial was
identified as a battle between urban modernism and rural fundamentalism.

Bryan had disregarded them and explained that he would answer questions only under the
circumstance that he could ask questions as well. Bryan had a lengthy list of inquisitions for Darrow
and supporting evolutionists; essential among these questions, he would demand explanation about the
missing evidence in fossil documentation. According to Bryan, genuine science cannot be proven true
until it is classified by legitimate knowledge, thus supporting his claim that the theory of evolution
cannot be veritable science since it is merely a string of theories and assumptions. Bryan intended to
express this point in his final argument in the trial. More precariously, he accentuated the missing
relations between humans and their supposed arthropod ancestors, because there are no tangible links
between them. Henry Fairfield, President of the American Museum of Natural History, came to Bryan
with so called evidence of horse and human evolution in 1922. In this confrontation with Bryan,
Fairfield explained that evidence for humanistic development as abundant as that of horse evolution
had not yet been discovered, but the very recent discovery of Tertiary man...constitutes the most
convincing answer to Mr. Bryan s call for more evidence. (Larson). Experienced witnesses requested
by Darrow brought this evidence with them to Dayton.
In the week leading up to the trial, hundreds of people and peddlers lined the streets, selling Bibles,
stuffed monkeys, and pins that read Your Old Man s a Monkey . There were even circus performers
with live chimpanzees to entertain children. Many people thought incorrectly that the theory of
evolution claimed that human beings were descended from monkeys; for this reason, the newspapers
and reporters dubbed the Scopes Trial the Monkey

Erikson and Goffman on American Identity Essay
When foreigners think of America, they think of McDonald s, the Statue of Liberty, Hollywood film
stars, and the list goes on. In terms of Americans, people associate Texans with cowboy boats,
Californians with surfboards, and New Yorkers with a snobbish grin on their face. It is true that all
these things represent America in one way or another, but what exactly is American identity? Erikson
s analysis on American identity has drawn attention to four topics: Mom, adolescent, boss, and
machine. He links all four topics together by using the myth of John Henry Hero. Goffman, on the
other hand, develops dramaturgical analysis to understand human behaviors. He sees men as actors

Second, parents do not satisfy everything the child demands, and the child feels neglected and grows
distant from his parents. John Henry left his parents because his parents fed the dogs before they fed
him. Third, he left because he was sure that he could take care of himself. John Henry took into his
grave believing that a man counts only as a man (Erikson, P. 299). Hence, in another point of view, he
abandoned his parents just as Erikson says, it was the child who abandoned the mother, because he
had been in such a hurry to become independent (Erikson, P.296). This abandonment also lead to
another factor rejections to intimate feelings. Erikson finds not only the sorrow of having been
abandoned but also the fear of committing to deep emotions (Erikson, P.301) in cowboys because
there is a mental barrier in knowing that they have abandoned their mothers and have been abandoned
by her. Cowboys, thus, are usually rather lonely people. Their job will not let them see their family nor
their friends very often. They are the man without roots, the motherless man, the womenless man
(Erikson, P.299). The nonsense folk songs offer a funny yet sarcastic view of cowboys life they are not
bounded by relationships because they are not allowed to do so. This lifestyle,

What Causes Eczema Essay
This article was a study of components that can potentially cause eczema to flare up . By this it means

inflammation of the skin that causes the skin to be dry and often times itchy. Many people have this
skin disease and there are many factors, environmentally that can affect it negatively. The factors that
were observed in this study were: clothing, temperature, humidity, sweating, pollen levels, exposure to
the sun, dust, unfamiliar pets, shampoo, and swimming. In this study, sixty children were used to be
observed for an extended period of time for 6 9 months while being exposed to these certain factors
that may cause their eczema to flare up. They used daily logging on electronic diaries to determine
their daily exposure to these factors and how their eczema reacted in regards to itchiness or how much
it bothered them and how much they scratched. The temperature, humidity, pollen levels were

In Steven Spielberg s attempt to show the spontaneity of the events, during scenes like the liquidation
of the ghetto, he would grab a hand held camera and walk around the actors. He was trying to give the
viewer a sense of what it would be like to actually be in those situations, and make the camera as
unobtrusive as possible. When Itzhak Stern leaves his apartment to the street Spielberg uses the hand
held camera to represent the chaos of the moment. The germans are screaming at him, the streets are
packed with people, and they are shooting families.
There is a fantastic panning shot of the Jews and the Germans listening to the radio announcing the
end of the war. The camera pans to the left showing the faces of the Jews as they realize the war is
really over. Then they show the germans faces as they realize they lost the war. It shows the
similarities, and the differences very well of the two situations.
A beautiful dolly shot is right at the end of the movie when oskar is fleeing, and the camera is pointed
at Schindler behind the window of the his car. You see his face, but reflected in the glass are the faces
of the Jews he saved, as the camera moves with the car. The car and camera are moving to the right,
and you get the feeling that everything is over, and they are safe

Chilean music consists of folk music, Tonada, and Cueca. Chilean folk music is like regular folk
music but with a twist such as some traditional Chilean instruments. Tonada is a type of genre of
music that was brought by the Spaniards. Unlike the Cueca, the Tonada is different because it is a type
of music that is not accompanied by dance. Finally the Cueca, the national dance of Chile is rooted in
Spanish, African, Peruvian, and the indigenous Chilean origins. In total, most of all the Chilean music
genres and dances are rooted from many of the same cultures especially the Spanish. Chilean cuisine
is a product of commingling of the native Indian tradition with Spanish colonial contribution,
combining their customs, foods, and culinary habits. When Chile declared independence from Spain

Officer Ogden reports patrolling the parking lot of Walmart, located at 18631 W Kellogg drive, and
observing a male, the sole occupant of the vehicle, drive through the parking lot in a green Jeep Grand

unable to positively determine if the driver had a seat belt on or not. Ogden followed the vehicle out of
the parking lot using the southeast exit and traveled north on 183 rd. As Ogden followed the vehicle,
he noticed that the vehicle did not signal to make a right turn onto US 54 until approximately 50 feet
from the intersection, well north of Murphy s gas station. Ogden then ran the license plate and saw it

A crisis can be a terrible burden on any individual that has or is suffering through one; a crisis can

After I had established rapport with Jill and ensured that we had a reciprocal relationship I was then
able to move on to the next phase. Stage B of the ABC Model of Crisis Intervention is mainly focused
around identifying the problem. This can be considered the most crucial aspect of the ABC Model for
providing therapeutic interaction. Identifying the precipitating event is important but exploring the
client s perceptions and cognitions are even more important. If I was to actually help Jill then I had to
find out her thoughts and feelings revolving around the situation.
I already know that Jill is scared of her husband and that he does stuff to her when she does not
respond the way he wants sexually. But now that I have gained Jill s trust and we have moved into the
B phase I can now get more specific. I decided to start out with some open ended questions so that I
was able to guide the conversation but also let her take over talking. After the opening question I
posed I was then able to tie all of my other questions to what Jill had just said. My reasoning for this is
because when a question is posed effectively essential information can be better gathered (Kanel,
2008).
In addition to posing my questions the best I could I also made sure to paraphrase throughout the

discrimination and to restore voting rights in the South. Clearly the 60s was not the beginning of the
fight for civil rights in America. The 18th century in the United State was plagued by hatred, racism
and slavery. Slavery affected the entire nation. Slavery destroyed families by taking members of one s

Achieving Justice In America
Achieving justice in American society today is complicated. Society as a whole is indifferent on what
justice is defined by. The United States government creates laws and punishments for breaking those
laws. The foundation of all laws in America is the constitution. Judges and/or panels determine the
consequences of breaking those laws that are protected and enforced by lawyers and lawmen. The
challenge here is to truly determine what is to be considered justice for the state of the society deriving
their just powers from the consent of the governed (Jefferson, 1776), and not that for a lone individual
or a specific group. To bend rules or the law in a way to make a few happy is truly that of injustice.

Operant Learning Punishment
Operant learning was created and researched by Edward Thorndike and B.F. Skinner in the early to
middle 1900s. Operant learning is a type of learning that is controlled by
consequences(reinforcement). These consequences can include a punishment or even a reward that
reinforces a behavior. When a reinforcement is provided it is proven that a behavior will increase. In
operant learning, there are four different types of consequences: positive punishment, negative
punishment, positive reinforcement, and negative reinforcement. A positive or negative punishment
will always decrease an unwanted behavior. The only difference between the two is in positive
punishment something is added, and in negative punishment something unpleasant is removed. An
example of positive punishment would be spanking a child, and an example of negative punishment
would be losing money to a swear jar. The last two forms of consequences are positive and negative
reinforcement. Reinforcement always increases the desired behavior. In positive reinforcement,
something pleasant is added and in negative reinforcement something unpleasant is taken away. An
example of positive reinforcement would be a teacher complimenting students after a correct answer,
and an example of negative reinforcement would be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The topics of same sex marriage and same sex parental adoption have been controversial and ongoing
topics in recent years, which is a drastic change in mainstream society. People of the lesbian, gay,
bisexual, and transgender (LBGT) community have had a difficult time in gaining visibility and equal
civil liberties, one of which is marriage equality. Same sex couples have only recently been recognized
under the law as legal candidates for marriage rights, and adoption is now an additional option;

The word lesbian first made an appearance in the works of Sappho, a Greek poet whose origins date
back to seventh century BCE.
A notable exception [to nearly all Greek literary production being written by men] was the poet
Sappho, who lived in the seventh century BCE on the island of Lesbos (thus the word lesbian). / Many
young, wealthy Greek women were sent to Lesbos to study the arts with Sappho. Much of Sappho s
surviving poetry is love lyrics to these young women (Meem, Gibson, Alexander 2018).
The birth of lesbianism being a derivative of Sappho s Lesbos makes Sappho the rightful creator. In a
more modern context, the traditional societal views prohibited lesbian identifying women to be open,
thus forcing them to conceal their true affections.
Before the rise of the lesbian feminist movement in the early 1970 s, twentieth century women writers
were generally intimidated into silence about the lesbian experiences in their lives. In their literature,
male personae took the voice of their most auto biographical characters, and they were thus permitted
to love other women (Faderman 1979).
Faderman continues to explain how Sappho s island of Lesbos became a type of code in the vernacular
in the time of Lady Mary Montagu; her love letters to a woman named Anne Wortley included
illusions to the fictitious island and what it would be like to fancy ourselves in Lesbos

White Fang Essay
White Fang
By Jack London
1. Survival of the Fittest
This means that only the brightest and strongest will survive. From the beginning White Fang was
strong. He was the only pup of his litter to survive. His strength and intelligence made him the feared
dog in the Indian camp. While defending Judge Scott, White Fang takes three bullets but, amazingly,
he is able to pull through the operation of removing the bullets. White Fang learns how to fight the
other dogs, to obey new masters, learn to fight under the evil guidance of Beauty, and be loved by
Weedon Scott.

If there was a weak dog he should be killed basically. The strong to White Fang were Gray Beaver,
and Beauty who would beat White Fang if he tried to run away, which he took as strength.
2. They were fire makers! They were gods!
This is said because White Fang watches the men make a fire. He sees this as them making a life that
is red and warm out of something dead and cold. To him this was godlike.
3. Food and fire, protection and companionship, were some of the things he received from the god. In
return, he guarded the god s property, defended his body, worked for him, and obeyed him.
This quote shows why White Fang acted friendly towards Gray Beaver. Gray Beaver gave him food,
warmth, protected him, and gave him companionship. While White Fang guarded his property from
other people who might want to steal it, defended Gray Beaver from harm, and obeyed him.
4. quot; They were his environment, these men, and they were molding the clay of him into a more
ferocious thing than had been intended by Nature. Nevertheless, Nature had given him plasticity.
Where many another animal would have died or had its spirit broken, he adjusted himself and lived,
and at no expense of the spirit. quot;
This quote means that the men that were raising White Fang were cruel in his upbringing. Instead of
teaching him to be well tempered and kind, they taught him to be ferocious and

Elizabeth Kubler-Ross Theory Of Grieving
The theory of grief and loss was developed by Elizabeth Kubler Ross (1969) to apply to people who
are grieving as well as those that are dying. Different people deal with grief differently but according
to Kubler Ross suggested that when people grieve they will go through these stages; denial, anger,
bargaining, depression and acceptance. Sometimes loss is expected and sometime it is a surprise to
people. The first stage; denial is about the person who is grieving will feel numb and shocked and
would not be willing to accept that their loved one has passed away or is terminally ill (Kubler Ross,
1969). This relates to Jason Martins who has lost his mother due to an illness. This theory was used to

Social workers can improve empowerment to a grieving person by ensuring that they have the support
that they need (Parkes, 1986/2007) this includes support from the community and neighbours as this
experience will offer the bereaved person encouragement to continue living their life. When service
users are grieving they are vulnerable therefore social workers should establish their professional
relationship with them using honesty and transparency (PCF domain 2 Values and Ethics) therefore,
the client does not identify their social worker as a personal friend. Social workers can prevent
oppression and discrimination by ensuring that anti oppressive and anti discriminatory policies are in
place (PCF domain 3 Diversity) and they should ensure that they are aware of the challenges that
service users face due to their emotional state and their identity.
The grief and loss theory has been criticised by Corr et al (1997) who stated that there is not real life
evidence to prove that people do go through the stages one (1) to stage five (5). Also the theory was
criticised for not acknowledging the limitations of the model, for example, people do not always go
through all the five (5) stages. Another criticism of the theory is that using the word stage to describe
the grieving process implies how inconsiderate it is as it forces the bereaved to internalise their
feelings waiting for that stage to pass which will affect their life in the long

Numerous influential characters that amplify the struggles faced with during wartime are introduced

from focusing on the war, but rather on their several youthful possibilities. While enjoying himself at

Essay on A River Runs Through It
All lives revolve around decisions and instances from ones past. In A River Runs Through It (1992),
director Robert Redford uses this idea and applies it to a true story of two brothers from Montana,
Norman and Paul Maclean (Craig Sheffer and Brad Pitt, respectively). Based on the autobiographical
novel by Norman Maclean himself, River uses Maclean s metaphysical beliefs about life and nature to
present its many themes. Using a longing score, various film devices, and a story line involving
themes of youth, loss, and the pitfalls of pride, Robert Redford crafts a film about the beauty of the
past. The film starts with an elder Norman fishing in the Big Blackfoot river. Written by Mark Isham
(who won the Academy Award for his work on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This pattern of Norman accepting, and Paul pushing away, is recurrent throughout the film. Redford
stays in the boys youths for a longer period of time than the average director. This is due to the
importance of youth within the film. Redford constantly reminds viewers of the boys innocence and
purity by bathing them in light. In one of the first, and most widely known, scenes in the film the two
boys are fishing in the middle of the river. Redford films the shot at the end of the day, as the sun is
low in the sky, and the boys are backlit and silhouetted by the sun and its reflection off the water. This
shot gives the characters a pure and innocent aura, and helps the viewer subconsciously connect with
their youth. As Norman and Paul grow older, they remain very close. This is meant figuratively and
literally, as Redford s use of Mise En Scene helps to establish just how close the relationship between
the two is. There are dozens of shots within the film, where the boys (and later men) are standing next
to each other completely alone and at an extreme long shot, with the vast Montana wilderness behind
them. This technique of camera distance and character closeness gives the film and the boys
relationship an us against the world feel, and also connects the boys closeness directly to the setting in
which they grew up. Another way Redford conveys the importance of Montana and the river to the
boys lives is with voice over placed on panning

The Ethics Of An Organization
The subject of morals is covered inside the money related operations of different organizations. The
term moral alludes to the arrangement of good standards by which individuals behave by and by,

Official remuneration is an integral part of any business. The part of repaying the official arm of any

In each U.S. presidential election, there are several key problems. One of the most debated issues for

legal immigration, in terms of their goals, the effects on the country and their values.
Firstly, illegal immigrants and legal immigrants can be treated as two sides of a same coin. According
to Roy (1996), the level of illegal immigration is increased with the level of legal immigration at the
same time. Similarly, when the level of legal immigration declines, the level of illegal immigrants will
also be reduced. The reason for this phenomenon can be interpreted as that both the illegal immigrants
and the legal immigrants chose immigrants for the same reason. For example, people want to evade
persecution based on race, religion, nationality or nationality, or holding different political views.
Therefore, the purpose of illegal immigrants and legal immigrants are the same to some extent.
However, the two methods of immigrations are completely different. Mostly illegal immigrants enter
the United States through smuggling, referring to immigrants who non citizens illegally cross the

Essay on Prophet and Tecumseh
It is believed that Tecumseh was born in 1768 in central Ohio. He was the second son of a Shawnee
warrior who was killed at the Battle of Point Pleasant. In his dying breaths, his father commanded his
eldest son Cheesuaka, to train Tecumseh as a warrior and to never make peace with the whites.
Cheesuaka was good to his word and became an excellent warrior and a teacher. He grew close with
his younger brother, and after their mother moved to Missouri he acted as a foster parent as well.
Tecumseh was a model child, and although it is claimed that he ran in terror from his first battle, his
courage never faltered from then on. Tall, muscular, intelligent, and highly charismatic, Tecumseh
proved to be a master battle tactics and an excellent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ways of the white men, he proclaimed, were an evil that corrupted all they touched. Not only did
the whites continue to take Indian lands, they had made the Indians dependent on the white world s
tools and poisoned by its whiskey The Indian people were losing their identity. (Edmunds)
Prophets teachings called for a total rejection of the white culture, which included the clothing and
technology, alcohol and religion. He also spoke out against the selling of land because according to
Indian beliefs no one owned the land. This was according to ancient tradition; the land and its
resources were given to everyone by the Great Spirit. Along with this, Prophet preached another
powerful message he called for an intertribal confederacy that would accept Indians everywhere. To
help this vision become a reality Prophet looked to his brother, Tecumseh. (Edmunds)
Tecumseh was a very powerful speaker and a well respected warrior. From the time he was very
young it was obvious he would be a very highly skilled hunter, leader and warrior. The two used his
image amongst the native in order influence them to join the fight. Tecumseh considered himself an
Indian first and a Shawnee second. This helped the brothers vision of one united Indian confederacy
seem more feasible. (Edmunds)
The bothers were united, one as a political activist and the other as a religious fanatic, in an effort to

Taking a Look at Truman Capote
CAPOTE By all the accounts, Truman Capote was a mysterious man, being unhappy and self
absorbed even in some parties he over drink himself to death. In his masterpiece writing In Cold
Blood he invented a new sort of writing, the non fiction novel which was criticized on the basis of his
emotional manipulation of a condemned murderer with whom he seems to fall in love. Capote is
actually the dramatization of his famous writing In Cold Blood which covers the territory that the
movie is based on the subject of Truman Capote s attempt to somehow or other create the genre of non
fictional fiction. Capote illustrates a portrait of the interest of author in the two cold blooded killers
especially in the character of Perry Smith. (Brevet, 2009) By reading the masterpiece and then
watching the movie, audience can easily judge that Capote definitely manipulated Smith by bounding
his actions and making him realized compelled to himself. For several times, Capote went out of his
ways in order to save Smith s life. First it happened when Smith was in prison and Capote visited him
and then tried his best to bring him back to life. Then he paid for a lawyer I order to offer appeal to
Smith and Hickok s death sentence. Capote s contribution was major in contrast so ultimately Smith
felt obligated to repay him in some honorable way. Not only Capote was interested in Smith but Smith
also admired him throughout the story and even he did not want to disappoint him in any way. Just to

Analysis Of Ray Bradbury s Dandelion Wine
As aging occurs within humans, not only do physical changes occur, but changes in the mind occur as
well. Changes that change the way the brain thinks and influences decision making, as well as
reactions to certain situations that occur. These changes are apparent as the brain and body ages and
can clearly be seen when those of varying ages interact with each other. In Dandelion Wine by Ray
Bradbury, one of the main themes appears to be the accustomed act of maturing, or growing up,
specifically, how comprehension is different in people of different ages. Bradbury s novel includes
characters of various ages ranging from little kids to elders whose time has almost come to an end.
These characters interact with one another throughout the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the two brothers continue to go about their day throughout this section, their interactions reveal not
only their personalities, but how they think differently from each other due to their age differences.
Tom, being the younger sibling, still has hope for things that Doug knows are scientifically not going
to happen, like snowflakes lasting until summer. Doug also seems to view things more cogently than
Tom since he doesn t find as much wonder in a sandwich´s taste being more flavorful when eaten
outside. Doug´s disagreements with Tom show how his way of thinking leans more towards realism
when compared to Tom, although he still has a childlike fear of a ¨Thing¨, which he sees as this
monster like being, coming after him. Therefore, it can be concluded from the brothers´ different
views that even a small age difference can cause someone´s way of thinking to change. Despite their
contrasting views, Bradbury also reveals that Doug still falls into the common little kid belief in
monsters to show that Doug´s thinking still had some similarities with Tom´s thinking, but overall
Doug had a more realistic view than his younger brother. The theme of human´s thinking changing
with age starts to emerge through interactions between just kids at first, but youths´ interactions with
the elderly appear later on and show a more drastic contrast between people of different ages´ ways of
comprehending. In the midst of

Plan For Implementing Cobit For Gardner Novelties Essay
1.0 Plans for implementing COBIT for Gardner Novelties
According to the owner of the Gardner Novelties, Inc., William Montgomery Gardner III (WG), the
company needs to be compliant with Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) Act Section 404. This will involve
making assessment of the internal controls over the financial reporting for the company. Such internal

result, the company has been requested to explore the COBIT framework for the implementation of
the compliance with the SOX Act, more specifically, Sarbanes Oxley Act Section 404 (Hoitash,
Hoitash, Bedard, 2008). According to SOX Act, the insurer of IPO needs all the information

My Personal Statement On My Career
This class has overall been one of my favorite classes that I have taken over the past four years five
years at DeSales. I learned more than I expected and have implemented some of these learned lessons
towards simple excel calculations into my work at my job. For my chosen project, I decided to take a
look at one of my hobbies. During my senior year I took a personal finance and discussed with one of
my professors about my collection of trading cards. The result of this conversation, had me start
thinking about the overall value of my collection for insurance purposes and if I ever sold the
collection. After my undergrad was over, I decided to pick up some hobbies and one was to continue
my interest in collecting Pokemon cards. When I has very young, Pokemon was my life and I spent
most of my time after school playing the video games or collecting the cards. For a brief time in high
school, I began to sell my cards and got out of Pokemon altogether. However, once college began, one
method that helped me study was watching video game walkthroughs on YouTube. This lead to me
watching more Pokemon videos and even into finding two Poketubers (those on YouTube who create
videos related to Pokemon) who I follow daily. Some of their videos even had them opening up packs
of Pokemon cards which fully got me back into Pokemon. Now that I have completed undergrad and
have some more free time on my hands, I have picked up collecting Pokemon cards and as result of
completing this

The Harvard, Oxford and American Psychological Association writing styles are still being used
today. All the styles that are still being used include the Chicago and scientific writing styles. When
editing for newspapers and scientific articles, the test was very tedious. In fact, the white editing is
done today is mainly on the computer.
However, studies have shown that is faster to read information that is on a fiscal source such as a book
or notebook than on a spring for this computer. This is due to the high resolution pictures and lights
there I made it from the screen.
It slows down reading times and causes these writing stuff to suffer. This is because when information
is written by hand although the test may seem to be slower, it gives the writer time to reflect on his or
her thoughts about the subject differently. Moreover, scientific studies have shown that the brain
receives material information differently on paper books then on screen for just computers,
smartphones and tablets.

Imperialism In Avatar Analysis
Imperialism: the process of a strong country taking control of what they believe to be an inferior
territory or region. The similarities between the film, Avatar, and real life imperialism is very apparent,
and James Cameron, director, conveys the ideas of imperialism through this. In Avatar, humans invade
the planet, Pandora, to study the wildlife, and plants for scientific research. However, this made no
money for business moguls like Parker Selfridge. Thus, he came to collect a resource called
unobtanium which is needed on earth. Furthermore, Jake Sully, a paralyzed, former military
personnel, travels to pandora in place of his twin brother, Tommy, who recently was murdered.
Originally, Sully was supposed to study the Na vi, natives, of Pandora and learn their weaknesses as
well as their lifestyle through a process called linking. Although that was his main goal, Sully fell in
love with being a Na vi after meeting Neytiri, the Na vi princess, and assimilating to the culture of
Pandora s natives. Therefore, in the film, Avatar, James Cameron portrayed assimilation, and racism
similar to the European imperialism, however did a somewhat accurate job of showing geopolitics as
it occurred in Europe s colonies.
On the planet, Pandora, resources were stripped from the natives by the aliens invading their home
and lifestyle, exactly how the Belgians did in Congo. In Avatar, the sky people went to Pandora for
many reasons. Scientists came to study the land and learn from the

The Kingdom Of Heaven And Jesus s Mission On Earth
One dominant study from the New Testament has been The Kingdom of Heaven as it is believed to be
the central theme within the novel and Jesus s mission on earth. The phrase Kingdom of Heaven is
supposed to be the Kingdom of God, in which those who are spiritual believe in his existence in their
hearts leaving this kingdom as the place where God is unfolding his divine plans (Walvoord, 2015).
Christians believe that God is the creator of all things and sovereign over the universe however the
Islamic faith believe that God sent prophets to teach his laws and one was Muhammad. Christian texts
represent the concept of the Kingdom of Heaven to be the exercise of God s power and dominion. The
Christian faith in contrast to Islamic beliefs, ow sacred texts are interpreted with parables, how they
represent beliefs and how religious founders taught will be discussed throughout this essay.
The Bible is a sacred texts to religions such as Christianity, it not only holds stories and rules or
expectations to follow but hidden messages from God about the Kingdom of Heaven. The Parable of
the Sower represents four different ways the word of God from the Kingdom of Heaven can be
interpreted by evaluating the condition of four types of hearts from humanity. Jesus explained to the
people that a farmer had gone out to sow his seeds. Referring to Matthew 13 versus 4 6, explains the
first two kinds of people. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came

Media Analysis On Miley Cyrus s Wrecking Ball Music Video
Media Analysis on Miley Cyrus s Wrecking Ball Music Video
In a nutshell, feminist scholars claims that the objectification of women is when women is reduced to
instruments of sexual pleasure for men which primarily involves disregarding women s personal and
intellectual abilities and capabilities. The examples of objectifying women that has been cited by the
feminists include depictions of women in advertising and media. This, however, can be traced back in
1950 s, when women were treated as sexual object in the narrative cinema. Today, the objectification
of women has been aggravated by the nudity concept in music videos, which has also becoming part
of the pop culture amongst the celebrities in 20th century. The essay aims to explore the reading of the
text within Miley Cyrus s provocative Wrecking Ball music video, using Male Gaze theory, and will
include some major arguments from the feminists relating to the issue. Without a doubt, the music
video acts as the best media product to analyse these theories, as not only that it has been cited in
many feminism arguments, it also signifies Miley s controversial and shocking 360 degrees
transformation. Miley Ray Cyrus is an American songstress and actress, who rose to global
prominence as a teen idol after being cast in the hit Disney TV series Hannah Montana. The Grammy
Awards nominee has released four albums to date, including Bangerz , which includes Wrecking Ball .
Through the video, it is indisputable that

  • 2. Resistance To Affirmative Action Resistance to affirmative action has existed from the time it was introduced (Allen, 2011; Kaufmann, 2007), and in many instances, the U.S. Supreme Court has played a crucial role in determining the extent to which it can achieve its original goals (Zamani Brown, 2003). One of the earliest cases to challenge the use of affirmative action was DeFunis v. Odegaard (1973), of which the court found the University of Washington Law School s use of race in admissions to be unconstitutional (Platt, 2007; Zamani Brown, 2003). The law school was accused of having separate admissions procedures for students of color by giving less weight to their predicted first year averages. As such, DeFunis argued that underqualified students of color had been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kirwan (1994), a federal court ruled on the constitutionality of race based merit scholarships. In this case, the merit based Benjamin Banneker Scholarship, earmarked for African American students, sought to attract academically talented African American students to the University of Maryland at College Park. The court ruled it was not permissible to maintain separate financial merit awards according to race (Shapiro, 1995), illustrating the increasing difficulties postsecondary institutions faced to designate a fellowship or scholarship specifically for racial/ethnic minorities (Platt, 2007). In fact, efforts to prohibit affirmative action in the United States really ramped up in the mid 1990 s. For instance, in 1996 the Supreme Court upheld California s Proposition 209, an amendment to the state constitution that banned both discrimination and affirmative action programs that give preferences to groups or individuals based on their race, gender, color, ethnicity, or national origin. To that end, race could not be used as a consideration (e.g., admissions and hiring decisions) in public education (Alvarez Bedolla, 2004). In addition, in Hopwood v. Texas (1996), the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals issued a decision ending affirmative action in both private and public college admissions in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. More litigation continued in 1997 (Gratz v. Bollinger and Grutter v. • 4. The Achievements Of The Roman Republic The key feature of almost all lasting, successful military establishments is a professional base of soldiery. Having this in place is the gateway to repeatable military triumph. The first state to universally construct a professional military was the Roman Republic, beginning in 107 BC. Gaius Marius, Praetor and later Consul of the Republic, was the main figure in bringing about these changes. He, among other reformations, eliminated the requirement of land ownership as a prerequisite of army service, along with large scale standardization of equipment. These were some of the ways that Marius was able to establish one of the best and longest lasting military forces in all history. As the professional soldiery of the Roman Republic grew, so too did the ease with which it subjugated and conquered its neighbors. Part of current understanding of the Roman Army, especially during the Republic and before, can be concluded from a study of Roman political history. Rome began as a city founded by Romulus after he killed his brother Remus, both descended from Aeneas, who escaped the Sack of Troy of Illiad fame, or so the legend goes. The young city spent the better part of 200 years under the yoke of the Etruscan League, a confederation of Latin Tribes primarily to the east and north of Rome in Central Italy. The Etruscans were in turn fond of trading with the Greeks, not just for wealth, but also for ideas. Until c. 550 BC the Romans did not normally use a state controlled army, but ... • 7. Uncertainty And Imperfect Information On Entrepreneurship Uncertainty and Imperfect information in entrepreneurship are two important concepts that should be considered in the role of entrepreneurs. According to (Klir, 1999) uncertainty has many methods and dimensions and can include concepts such as vagueness, disagreement and conflict, imprecision and non specificity The term uncertainty can be defined broadly as any deviation from the unachievable ideal of completely deterministic knowledge of the relevant system (Walker, 2003). Uncertainty could mean unpredictability, doubt or fear of the unknown. It has to do with the risk entrepreneurs take in business. Imperfect information on the other hand means lack of adequate information before embarking on the business. It can also be viewed as incomplete collection of facts or flawed communication. These two concepts play vital roles in businesses and if not carefully considered and handled, they can have adverse effects on businesses. Who Are Entrepreneurs? An entrepreneur is a person who creates new business, taking risks in accomplishing the objectives which they intend to make profits and growth by recognising vital opportunities (Burdus, 2010). They are individuals who innovate, recognise business opportunities, gather and co ordinate new blends of resources {i.e. production functions) in other to extract the most profits from their innovations in an uncertain environment (Rapheal Amit, 1993) Entrepreneurs are private business owners. Bryan had a lengthy list of inquisitions for Darrow and supporting evolutionists; essential among these questions, he would demand explanation about the missing evidence in fossil documentation. According to Bryan, genuine science cannot be proven true until it is classified by legitimate knowledge, thus supporting his claim that the theory of evolution cannot be veritable science since it is merely a string of theories and assumptions. Bryan intended to express this point in his final argument in the trial. More precariously, he accentuated the missing relations between humans and their supposed arthropod ancestors, because there are no tangible links between them. Henry Fairfield, President of the American Museum of Natural History, came to Bryan with so called evidence of horse and human evolution in 1922. In this confrontation with Bryan, Fairfield explained that evidence for humanistic development as abundant as that of horse evolution had not yet been discovered, but the very recent discovery of Tertiary man...constitutes the most convincing answer to Mr. Bryan s call for more evidence. Stage B of the ABC Model of Crisis Intervention is mainly focused around identifying the problem. This can be considered the most crucial aspect of the ABC Model for providing therapeutic interaction. Identifying the precipitating event is important but exploring the client s perceptions and cognitions are even more important. If I was to actually help Jill then I had to find out her thoughts and feelings revolving around the situation. I already know that Jill is scared of her husband and that he does stuff to her when she does not respond the way he wants sexually. But now that I have gained Jill s trust and we have moved into the B phase I can now get more specific. I decided to start out with some open ended questions so that I was able to guide the conversation but also let her take over talking. After the opening question I posed I was then able to tie all of my other questions to what Jill had just said. My reasoning for this is because when a question is posed effectively essential information can be better gathered (Kanel, 2008). In addition to posing my questions the best I could I also made sure to paraphrase throughout the interview. Paraphrasing is very useful because it helps me clarify what my clients have said. • 29. Operant Learning Punishment Operant learning was created and researched by Edward Thorndike and B.F. Skinner in the early to middle 1900s. Operant learning is a type of learning that is controlled by consequences(reinforcement). These consequences can include a punishment or even a reward that reinforces a behavior. When a reinforcement is provided it is proven that a behavior will increase. In operant learning, there are four different types of consequences: positive punishment, negative punishment, positive reinforcement, and negative reinforcement. A positive or negative punishment will always decrease an unwanted behavior. The only difference between the two is in positive punishment something is added, and in negative punishment something unpleasant is removed. An example of positive punishment would be spanking a child, and an example of negative punishment would be losing money to a swear jar. The last two forms of consequences are positive and negative reinforcement. Reinforcement always increases the desired behavior. A notable exception [to nearly all Greek literary production being written by men] was the poet Sappho, who lived in the seventh century BCE on the island of Lesbos (thus the word lesbian). / Many young, wealthy Greek women were sent to Lesbos to study the arts with Sappho. Much of Sappho s surviving poetry is love lyrics to these young women (Meem, Gibson, Alexander 2018). The birth of lesbianism being a derivative of Sappho s Lesbos makes Sappho the rightful creator. In a more modern context, the traditional societal views prohibited lesbian identifying women to be open, thus forcing them to conceal their true affections. Before the rise of the lesbian feminist movement in the early 1970 s, twentieth century women writers were generally intimidated into silence about the lesbian experiences in their lives. In their literature, male personae took the voice of their most auto biographical characters, and they were thus permitted to love other women (Faderman 1979). Faderman continues to explain how Sappho s island of Lesbos became a type of code in the vernacular in the time of Lady Mary Montagu; her love letters to a woman named Anne Wortley included illusions to the fictitious island and what it would be like to fancy ourselves in Lesbos ... Sometimes loss is expected and sometime it is a surprise to people. The first stage; denial is about the person who is grieving will feel numb and shocked and would not be willing to accept that their loved one has passed away or is terminally ill (Kubler Ross, 1969). When service users are grieving they are vulnerable therefore social workers should establish their professional relationship with them using honesty and transparency (PCF domain 2 Values and Ethics) therefore, the client does not identify their social worker as a personal friend. The grief and loss theory has been criticised by Corr et al (1997) who stated that there is not real life evidence to prove that people do go through the stages one (1) to stage five (5). Also the theory was criticised for not acknowledging the limitations of the model, for example, people do not always go through all the five (5) stages. In A River Runs Through It (1992), director Robert Redford uses this idea and applies it to a true story of two brothers from Montana, Norman and Paul Maclean (Craig Sheffer and Brad Pitt, respectively). Based on the autobiographical novel by Norman Maclean himself, River uses Maclean s metaphysical beliefs about life and nature to present its many themes. Using a longing score, various film devices, and a story line involving themes of youth, loss, and the pitfalls of pride, Robert Redford crafts a film about the beauty of the past. This pattern of Norman accepting, and Paul pushing away, is recurrent throughout the film. Redford stays in the boys youths for a longer period of time than the average director. This is due to the importance of youth within the film. Redford constantly reminds viewers of the boys innocence and purity by bathing them in light. In one of the first, and most widely known, scenes in the film the two boys are fishing in the middle of the river. Redford films the shot at the end of the day, as the sun is low in the sky, and the boys are backlit and silhouetted by the sun and its reflection off the water. This shot gives the characters a pure and innocent aura, and helps the viewer subconsciously connect with their youth. As Norman and Paul grow older, they remain very close. This is meant figuratively and literally, as Redford s use of Mise En Scene helps to establish just how close the relationship between the two is. There are dozens of shots within the film, where the boys (and later men) are standing next to each other completely alone and at an extreme long shot, with the vast Montana wilderness behind them. This technique of camera distance and character closeness gives the film and the boys relationship an us against the world feel, and also connects the boys closeness directly to the setting in which they grew up. Similarly, when the level of legal immigration declines, the level of illegal immigrants will also be reduced. The reason for this phenomenon can be interpreted as that both the illegal immigrants and the legal immigrants chose immigrants for the same reason.
