(G) The goal is for students to understand that patterns may represent
relationships in order to model and analyze their behavior.
(R) You are a meteorologist who analyses geographic data to determine if cities
need to be evacuated.
(A) You work for the Weather Channel, specializing in detailing the likely paths of
hurricanes and the dangers it presents to specific cities.
(S) A hurricane is about to hit the eastern seaboard of the U.S. and evacuation
notices may need to be given.
(P) You will create a written report for the Weather Channel and will present your
findings.
(S) Your report needs to include the two graphs (longitude vs. time and latitude vs.
time) with detailed calculations of the lines of best fit, predictions of where the
hurricane will be in 6 and 12 hours and suggestions as to which cities may need
evacuating. You will be judged by Criterion B & Criterion C in Mathematics.
Goal: Innovative relationships founded in pattern define the
artistry of a culture.
Role: You are a playground architect specialist.
Audience: Your target audience is children up to the age of 8 years old and
the school planning committee.
Situation: The context that you find yourself in is that there is a pre-
existing space and the equipment is all very old.
Product: As a class, you will plan a completely new playground space.
Each student will then design one piece of equipment that will fit in
the space. The playground must reflect the culture of your local
environment and must include a special entrance that is defined by
pattern.
Standards for Success: This task will be judged by criteria A & B in
Mathematics.

Editor's Notes

  1. The goal is the statement of inquiry - participants will need to wordsmith sentence by adding a verb and perhaps a couple of words to make the “starter” work
  2. Make sure they don’t say the role of the student is a student. Give them a real world role that is exciting! Make sure they don’t say the audience is the teacher. The audience should be something authentic to the role.
  3. Notice the goal is the STATEMENT OF INQUIRY Make sure that students are not students/teachers for the “role” and “audience”. This is not engaging as they do it every day.
