Open innovation is an inclusive, social way of solving complex issues and
improving processes:
• Companies can maintain a competitive edge by outsourcing innovation
• Open innovation is the sharing of ideas between co-workers in a company,
or between them and other innovators and companies in their industry
• A democratic process, non-hierarchical, collaborative community
engagement
• Usually utilised in order to solve a specific problem

Shared or distributed knowledge involves crowdsourcing to gather
information and knowledge on a certain topic. This includes:
• Citizen journalism and citizen science
• Crowdsourced crisis mapping: quick distribution of information during
a crisis, there are some issues with the verification of data
• General information gathering, data mining for insights

insight or suggestions
• Includes Crowd labour and Co-creation

Top tips:
• Invest in recruitment: the people you co-create with are the most
important factor to your success
• Don’t over-plan: give yourself room to adapt
• Be imaginative: creative tasks make participants think differently
• Hand over the power: don’t predetermine outcomes
• This is a journey: take participants with you at every stage
