The Relevance of Behavioral Psychology to Instructional Technology
Behavioral Psychology Defined
John Watson wrote a paper in the Psychological Review in 1913 and defined behavioral psychology or
behaviorism as
...a purely objective experimental branch of natural science. Its theoretical goal is the prediction and
control of behavior. Introspection forms no essential part of its methods, nor is the scientific value of
its data dependent upon the readiness with which they lend themselves to interpretation in terms of
consciousness. The behaviorist in his efforts to get a unitary scheme of animal response recognizes no
dividing line between man and brute (Reynolds, Sinatra, Jetton 95).
Essentially Watson s views supported the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lastly the concept of functionalism states when people think or act they do so for a purpose or
function (Alberto Troutman 30). Thus behavioral psychology becomes a science emphasizing a
practical and observable approach (Alberto Troutman 30).
There are many behavioral psychologists that have contributed to the field.
John Watson s definition provided the foundation for Ivan Pavlov and B.F. Skinner. Their work has
been extremely beneficial to the development of psychology and education.
Ivan Pavlov earned a Nobel Peace Price for his research on respondent conditioning. It was by chance
that this discovery was made. He was studying the behavior of dogs in his laboratory. If his assistant
who fed the dogs came into the laboratory when Pavlov was studying the dog s stomach, the dog
began to secrete gastric liquids, just as if they had been given food. Pavlov deemed this a psychic
secretion and noted that this reaction affected the whole digestive system, starting with the flow of
saliva in the mouth as well as the secretion of acids in the stomach (Alberto Troutman 31). His peers
discouraged him from pursuing this research, but he continued. His experiment involving the dogs
included pairing food powder (which starts salivation an automatic reflex) with a tone or noise that
would normally have no affect on a dog s

Normative Thesis
In chapter two, The Bases for Our Decisions and roles of Discernment, the author focuses mainly on
the reason for our choices as humans, and our capability of being righteousness as individuals. The
authors explains that every individual has different morals which comes to effect the decisions we
make as humans.
A Proposed Normative Basis:
How do we approach ethics?
In general everyone approaches an ethical situation differently depending on his or her priorities.
When it comes to our ethical decisions we tend to approach them with normative basis. This
sometimes includes our virtues, principles and the consequences that we might be able to handle.
Often times, these normative basis go hand in hand and we tend to use them together when it comes to
decision making. This all depends on which of the three is more important to the individual.
Describing a Normative Basis
A normative basis often times gives us an idea of person that we should become and how we should
approach others. It can give our lives a direction by shape our lives. As we grow up we may
experience different situations that might affect how we see the world. However, these situations and
experiences also play a role in helping us define what it means to have an ethical judgment ... Show

Components Of Engineering Design And Analysis
CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1. ENGINEERING MATERIALS Materials are an important aspect
of engineering design and analysis. The importance of engineering materials can be noted from the
fact that historical ages have been named after materials. Materials Science forms the basic foundation
for engineers in product development because the structures, components, and devices that design are
limited by the properties of the materials. In the customer driven competitive business environment,
the product quality is of paramount importance [1]. The product or end application quality has been
found to be influenced by the engineering design, type of materials selected and the processing
technology employed. Therefore, the importance of engineering materials and their process techniques
are art of today s engineering world. There are wide categories of materials available which have
shown their potential in various engineering applications ranging from aerospace to household. The
materials are usually selected by considering their properties, specific application areas, advantages
and limitations. The challenge for designers is to select an optimal material suitable for the specific
design requirements. The complex design need in modern science generally lead to development of
newer materials to meet the specific operating conditions and regimes [1]. The new materials are
today developed from the conventional materials by both structural and surface (extrinsic)
modifications. In

Rules Of The Game By Amy Tan Essay
My mother s eyes turned into dangerous black slits. She had no words for me, just sharp silence.
These words from Amy Tan s Rules of the Game, perfectly show the personality of young Waverly s
mother. This short story from Amy Tan s collection shows the transformation of a young chess
prodigy, Waverly Jong s, along with her family s, personalities. They are a average Chinese family
living in San Francisco, until they realize the immense power their daughter has to offer. An important
theme in the story, Rules of the Game is popularity can have a negative effect on you and the people

After Waverly become more known, she started parading her around like a trophy. Not to mention that

zone, complete their mission and to survive. Paul sheds his soft, gentle, listening self and adopts a
killing, shouting, aggressive demeanor which he continually links to that of a hungry or wounded
animal. The second quote shows how soldier s mission looks like. There were thousands of Kantoreks,

Single Mothers In New Mexico
Family structure is a critical factor for a progressive society. If gender gap must be reduced
significantly in New Mexico, the size of single mother families must be reduced. This has the added
advantage of reducing poverty and allowing more women to participate effectively in the labor force.
Outreach programs should be broadened to identify young single mothers at the grassroots level and
not to single them out for social stigmatization but to support them develop skills that will empower
them. In addition, girls should be engaged through various programs to catch them young. These
approaches will help to define the problem of single mothers as economic rather than a moral one.
Thus, it becomes easier to leverage public support by the stakeholders ... Show more content on

cost of long acting reversible contraceptives such as intrauterine which has been proven to be more
effective than the short acting contraceptive because it is not taken every day. Often, the long acting
contraceptive is provided free of any charge by the program. The Texas experience has been quite
successful too. THAI focuses on the six Texas communities with the highest teenage pregnancy rate.
The goal of the THAI program is to build a collective, local and action oriented comprehensive local

Standardized Testing Benefits
Imagine if you or a friend had a talent for art, music, or foreign languages, but the school you attend
cut back on the time spent focusing on these multiple subjects and decided to focus on more important
subjects. Standardized test scores show the academic standing of an individual student and are used to
compare that student to others across the U.S. This can create an immense amount of pressure on
students to do well. Standardized tests focus on the core subjects of math and reading, with a smaller
emphasis on science and writing. If the tests only focus on four main subjects than how can they
measure other important traits or skills? We all have so many talents beyond the core subjects that do
not show up on a test. Standardized tests ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Schools across the country are offered different course rigors, allowing some students to be more
prepared for tests such as the SAT and ACT. The SAT and ACT are standardized tests that high school
students are required to take to get into college. According to College Board, a private nonprofit
corporation that owns the SAT, the test is designed to, measure the essential ingredients for college
and career readiness and success. The ACT test is designed to measure college and career readiness as
well. College Board also recommends students take challenging courses in order to do well on the test.
According to College Board an AP class gives you the academic skills you need in college. If students
are able to take AP courses, they have a higher probability of performing better on these tests
compared to students who have not taken AP courses ( The College Board ). An example of this unfair
advantage is between Indian Hill High School and Cincinnati Public Schools. Indian Hill High School
offers a total of 27 different AP courses to their students ( Academics ). At Cincinnati Public Schools,
there are only 13 different AP courses offered to high school students ( AP Blended ). Indian Hill High
School offers 17 more AP classes compared to Cincinnati Public Schools. The number of AP course
offered to students at Indian Hill provides an unfair advantage compared to Cincinnati Public, to do
well on both the SAT and ACT and learn the academic skills needed to get into college ( Academics ).
Both schools released their average composite ACT scores, and while Cincinnati Public Schools had
an average composite score of 22 on the ACT ( AP Blended ), Indian Hill s ACT composite score was
26.9 ( Academics ). The students at Indian Hill High School did significantly better on the ACT than

The Duality Of Evil In Voltaire s Candide
Life happens, and it is full of hypocrisy, corruption, folly, and most of all, evil. In Voltaire s satiric
picaresque novel, Candide, the author addresses this evil in the world and how humanity copes with it,
all the while cuttingly satirizing philosophical ideals of that time. Through the character of the Old
Woman, Voltaire expresses his true beliefs on the uselessness of philosophical speculation and
perpetuates his exploration of how one survives in an evil world. While Voltaire explores the origins
and purpose of evil in the world, the Old Woman has personally experienced the epitome of evil in the
world. As she shares her tale to Candide and Cundegonde, the Old Woman reveals the fact that she
was a princess and the daughter of a Pope ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Previously in the novel, Voltaire s purpose had been conveyed through satirizing the actions of other
characters, he truly says what he means through the story and advice of the Old Woman. She provides
an effective vehicle through which to express Voltaire s ideas on how one copes with a world full of
evil. The Old Woman also provides a strong juxtaposition to a famous philosopher of the time:
Leibniz, whose philosophy of optimism expressed that everything must be for the best in this the most
perfect of worlds. The Old Woman by her own admission has a great deal of knowledge and
experience in the world (41), especially the darkest parts of the world. By her own admission, she has
considered suicide multiple times, but was still fond of life (41). The Old Woman acknowledges the
evil in the world, and comprehends that not everything in life is for the best a strong contradiction to
Leibniz. While she may not be fond of optimism, the Old Woman still believes that life is worth
living: This ridiculous weakness is, perhaps, one of the dangerous principles implanted in our nature.
For what can be more absurd than to persist in carrying a burden of which we wish to be eased? to
detest, and yet to strive to persevere, our existence? (41). She uses the image of a serpent as a
metaphor for life. to caress the serpent that devours us, and hug him close to our bosoms till he has
gnawed into our hearts? (41). The Old Woman views life not with optimism, but with strength. She
perseveres not because she believes that all is for the best, but because she refuses to give up on her
life. She exemplifies how Voltaire believes that humanity should deal with evil in the world: with
logic, with calm, with strength, with

Celibacy in the Ministry of the Catholic Church
Introduction
The church has a large influence over the people, from the ancient times up until our modern age. The
church, as we know it, is composed of various members who all contribute to fulfill a holy calling, and
one of its constituents, who work closely with the public, are the priests. They make up the
embodiment of the Catholic Church, their very existence is what makes the church operate as it is,
meaning that they have an essential role to the Catholic system. With this in mind, priests represent the
very image of the church so issues associated with the priests are also identified in relation to the
church. As of now, there have already been various matters concerning the conduct of priests
instigated by society. One of these said issues are
Celibacy is the act of abstinence from marriage implicitly or explicitly made, for a more immaculate
devotion to chastity, by all those who are a member of the Holy Order. Priestly celibacy has been
observed by the Church for centuries with a high recognition, and retains its value undiminished even
in our time when the outlook of men and the state of the world have undergone such profound
changes. Amid the modern stirrings of opinion, a predisposition has been expressed, to ask the Church
to reconsider this specific convention. It is said that in the world of our time the observance of
celibacy has come to be difficult or even impossible. Necessity
One of the main reasons why it is necessary is because everyone is

Description Of A Photo Journal Assignment
This photo journal assignment was very interesting and educational. It helped me look outside the box
and to really relate geography to my everyday life. My first relatable topic that I came in contact with
during this assignment was the process of evaporation. At Dry Creek park in Modesto, CA, I
witnessed evaporation taking place in the creek. I have been going to this park for quite some time and

My second relatable topic that I came into contact with were these beautiful stepping stones. These
large stepping stones are sedimentary rock which is one of the rock types in the rock cycle. The word
sedimentary means that the rocks was formed by organic minerals and different particles. This rock
forming process can take many years and it starts when rocks weather and erode. This specific

Global warming and the greenhouse effect were some of the negative topics that I researched. After
further research for each topic, I became aware how I contribute to global warming. On my way to the

Edward Gibbon s Declaration Of The Reign
Edward Gibbon s declaration of the reign of the Five Good Emperors being the most happy and
prosperous time in the history of the human race bases its claims on what could be viewed as
superficial aspects of the empire. When studying the Roman Empire, it s difficult to not admire the
stunning works, such as the House of Fawn in Herculaneum or Hadrian s Villa. The wealth needed to
create such places indicates the prosperity within the empire during this time. Gibbons claimed
understanding on happiness and prosperity seem to have less to do with the personal lives of the

If you were a prisoner of war coming to see the Forum in attempts to assimilate into this most happy
and prosperous society, you were faced with images of your ancestors as captives. The forum catered
to a specific class of Roman citizens and did not act as a place where the average Roman man or
woman felt represented. In addition to the works of Trajan, Hadrian s Wall can also superficially
symbolize the happiness and prosperity of the Roman Empire as asserted by Gibbons. The emperor
Hadrian built Hadrian s Wall after returning from his visit to Britain. The construction of the wall was
an attempt by Hadrian to set up permanent borders for the Roman Empire and show the strength that
the Roman Empire had during the reign of Hadrian by doing so. The construction of the wall, while
showing strength and wealth, also can symbolize the empires struggle with its borders, and even more
so, citizenship. The wall itself symbolized the Roman Empire s tensions with the peoples surrounding
the empire. The wall showed how the empire needed a structural device to maintain some level of
peace within the empire. The idea of the reign of the Five Good Emperors being a time of prosperity
can also be understood when looking at the changing roles of women within the empire. Women
during this time period were treated differently than the woman before them. While it s difficult to
assert definitively whether or not women were more respected during this

The Similarities Between Lucius And The Tale Of Cupid And...
Many historical and mythological accounts of Graeco Roman history in the classical period, involved
tales of magic, worship of the gods, and emphasised the value society placed on devotion to religion.
These societal beliefs and practices became evident in the literature of Greek and Roman societies,
where its use, reach, and consequences was illustrated. In the only surviving Roman novel of the 2nd
century AD, Apuleius Metamorphoses, readers encounter a Greek nobleman, named Lucius, whose
insatiable curiosity leads him to explore magic. His over enthusiasm to intimately experience and
learn about magic, accidentally causes his transformation into an ass, causing him to be subjected to a
range of vulgar, exploitive, and lustful debaucheries on his path to become human again.
This essay will explore how Lucius s insatiable curiosity and thirst for forbidden knowledge causes
him to become a victim of magic, and how religion delivers him from its dangerous realms. Finally,
this essay will comment on the contested approaches to interpreting the final book of the novel.

Similarities Between Heart Of Darkness And Apocalypse Now
Heart of Darkness and its modern film adaptation Apocalypse Now are two masterpieces of art, by

venturing into the abyss of Nietzsche, who once wrote, in Beyond Good and Evil: He who fights with
monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster. If you gaze long enough into the abyss,
the abyss will also gaze into you. These two texts have a lot of similarities, namely Kurtz and the use

Corruption Of The American Dream In The Great Gatsby
The Corrupted American Dream The American Dream is an inspiration to many people. To live out
the American Dream is what once was on the minds of many Americans and still is to this day. In The
Great Gatsby, the American Dream was presented as a corrupted version of what used to be a pure and
honest ideal way to live. The idea that the American Dream was about the wealth and the possessions
one had was ingrained, somehow, into the minds of Americans during the 1920 s. As a result of the
distortion of the American Dream, the characters of F. Scott Fitzgerald s novel, The Great Gatsby
lived life believing in the American Dream, as a distorted one. The American Dream gave them
something to fight for. This was a chance to climb above their previous generation in terms of the
social ladder. Even though it was superficial, Gatsby s outlook on life was something that could be
labeled as optimistic. Although Gatsby s intentions were good he remained ignorant to the truth
around him. Gatsby believed that if he worked hard he would overcome the poverty of his early life
and he did just that. Gatsby though, did not strive to become a better man or a man with money for
himself, but rather for Daisy. Gatsby threw around large amounts of money as if it was nothing in an
attempt to win the heart of Daisy. He even threw incredibly lavish parties in hope that Daisy would
one day attend. He thought this would give him the chance to win her love. Gatsby truly believes that

Greek Hazing Research Paper
Hazing in the Greek Life
Life flipped upside down for Tucker Hipps when he did not have enough money to buy breakfast for
his fraternity brothers one morning. September 22, 2014 Tucker Hipps was found dead after a
fraternity run. Not only was this a traumatic experience for the campus of Clemson University, this
devastating news hit my families heart s real hard. Tucker was apart of the Sigma Phi Epsilon ,and he
was participating in an early morning group activity when things went bad. Tucker was last seen at the
bridge, and it was reported he missed breakfast( WSPA staff). With investigations still going on with
Tucker Hipps death, evidence is becoming more prominent. Clemson University crowds around

The consequences for committing hazing in the Greek life can be life changing. Seen on a webpage of
anti hazing laws, the South Carolina law for consequences for hazing states, Once an investigation has
been closed with evidence of people committing the act, the student can be dismissed, expelled,
suspended, or punished by the schools president... (South Carolina). Depending on the seriousness of
the event practiced and the leniency of the school, the school that the people commit hazing at can
handle the situations differently. Also, the repercussions of hazing are going to be different for the
student committing hazing and the student being hazed. This is important to think about when hanging
out with your fraternity or sorority because tragic events to one another can be prevented. Peyton
Arnett is a high school student ready to take on Greek life when she goes to college. Peyton states,
When headed to my sorority, I have to pay a heavy fee to be apart of this group. I am terrified of the
risk factor of hazing because I could get caught up into the acts. Then not only am I paying for my
dues to be in the sisterhood but I would be paying for a lawyer to help me (Arnett). This statement
turns into reality for many students at

A Study of Loneliness in an Old Age Home in India
A Study of Loneliness in an Old Age Home in India:
A case of Kanpur
Abstract
The Indian family has traditionally provided natural social security to the old people. However, in
more recent times, the traditional role of the family is being shared by institutions such as old age
homes. It is often assumed, and sometimes argued, that the absence of familial care and surroundings
induce feelings of loneliness among the residents of old age homes. This study, conducted in an old
age home in Kanpur, seeks to understand the experience of loneliness. This is examined with reference
to the concepts of social loneliness and desolation advanced by Weiss and Townsend respectively. The
phenomenon is also examined vis à vis the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many of the elderly parents are compelled to leave their children and stay in old age homes. The old
age homes, which were a rarity, have recently spread across the country, a fact that indicates the
growing rift between the generations. It is a social expectation in India that the adult sons will take
care of their aged parents and the daughters take charge of the parents in case the parents do not have
sons (Vatuk 1980; 1981; 1990). In case the sons stay separately from each other, the aged parents have
to be under the care of one of the sons (Vatuk 1981). It is sometimes asserted that the absence of any
such care will cause adjustment problems, loneliness and depression in the milieu of old age homes as
the elderly persons are habituated to staying with their family members. The residents of the old age
homes would find it difficult to adapt to the setting of the old age homes, which lacks the warmth and
security of the family environment. There are some studies, which have indicated this factor of
loneliness and depression felt by the residents of old age homes. These studies (Mishra 1993; Bagga
1997; Dandekar 1996; Nalini 1997; Chadha and Kanwar 1998; Rajan et al. 1999) have looked at the
structure of old age homes, life of the inmates, their level of satisfaction or dissatisfaction, loneliness,
depression and family linkage of the inmates.
Analysing these studies, one finds that the majority of these studies have not

Romantic And Romanticism In Emily Bronte s Wuthering Heights
There is nothing more important than a good, safe, secure home .There s no question that the
Victorians were advocates of this viewpoint. Creating a safe and righteous home was one of their most
important social values that took precedence over anything else. However, this moral belief falls short
in comparison to Bronte s Wuthering Heights. The novel generates irony and unfamiliarity because of
all that attention given to the two houses. One would expect the novel to be only about devotion to
home and that the focus is on domesticity, when in fact it was absent. The Heights, a house which
opens to the living room ,suggests that the novel s main concern is managing a well ordered home
while it turns out to be at odds with the domestic ideals.

The novel reveals elements of realism and romanticism which qualifies it as a hybrid. There are many
features in that novel that exemplify the Romantic period like the settings and the characters. Despite
the fact that the novel did not indicate a happy ending, it still delivers a romantic story that deals with
a strange, yet original love story of underlying human passion and untamed human nature, which is a
conspicuous Romantic effect. As we all know Romantics appreciate nature to a great extent, and
nature / landscapes in that novel are exclusively given the central scope of symbolism, where the
settings carry expressions of themes and emotions. Wuthering Heights in its gothic setting alone is a
feature of Romanticism. Whether it was the Moors, the Grange or even the Heights, each setting was
described explicitly in relation to the inhabitants and their feelings towards those places. For example
Catherine rejecting a Christian heaven and her longing to inhabit an earthly one which is Wuthering

1950s Popular Culture
When World War II ended most countries began to progress and prosper. Of these many countries, the
United States was ready to take on new challenges that lied ahead and eventually become one of the
most powerful countries on Earth. Popular Culture and Mass Media had a tremendous impact on
people s lives during the 1950 s which shaped the way that the United States is today. Popular culture
and mass media affected the television, the average American family, teenagers, and people involved
in the red scare. During the 1950 s the television was making its way into almost everyone s life. The
television was not very popular at first until the price went down and more people purchased it for
their homes (McCormack 1). One source says, By 1962 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The television had a remarkable role in the 1952 election, which was Dwight D. Eisenhower against
Adlai E. Stevenson (Parker 1). For example Richard Nixon, Dwight D. Eisenhower s vice president,
was accused of mishandling funds, but he was able to cover up his mistakes by giving a televised
speech that shifted the focus away from his mistake to his dog Checkers (Parker 1). This allowed for
Richard Nixon to easily reach out to the majority of voters and convince them that they should still
vote for Eisenhower. Another example of the usage of television in the 1952 election was the tactic of
the candidates campaigning with their wives (Parker 1). Joel Parker writes, both Eisenhower and
Nixon campaigned very visibly with their wives ... while Stevenson was vulnerable on this front due
to his status as a divorcé (Parker 1). Eisenhower and Nixon both used this advantage to campaign in a
more family friendly style which could be visible almost every time they appeared on television
(Parker 1). This intelligent approach that Eisenhower and Nixon took on television ultimately led to
Eisenhower becoming the 34th president of the United

Jimmy Savile Interview Analysis
INTERVIEW ANALYSIS The interview consisted of one participant. I have conducted a semi
structure with this interview, detailing the representations of how CSA is portrayed by the media. The
interviewee was given four different media articles, majority of the media items focused on the Jimmy
Savile scandal and just a small mention of historic CSA: (Historical Child Abuse: Key Investigations

uncovering by the Guardian and Scotland Yard accuses the BBC of hampering its investigations into
historical child sexual abuse by the Telegraph). I instantly feel a wave of dread flow through me when
I think of a young innocent child possibly going through a harassment ordeal, usually molested by an
adult male. However, paedophile is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of child sexual

Budgeting Is The Most Important Parts Of The Project...
Budgeting is one of the most important parts of the project planning process. Projects that come in at
or under budget when completed depends on it. Poor planning will lead to budget crisis where the
project could end up costing double or triple times the budget and delay the opening of a facility or
business by that same token; time is money. As Dr. Pace mentions, had the planners of the Irwin Army
Community Hospital paid attention to the budget planning, the sponsor might have realized the short
comings of that project (G. Pace, personal communication, December 3, 2015). Therefore, budgeting

The scope of the project gets defined in the work breakdown structure (WBS), where the schedules are
planned, and resources are assigned; at which the project manager are more familiar and can estimate
more precisely to an agreeable point with the customers. Project scope has a great influence on the
accuracy of cost estimates (Ciraci Polat, 2009).
The delay and disruption caused by bad estimation may lead to project failure (Lee et al. 2009) or at
best to project management failure, that is, not delivering the project on time, within budget, and per
specifications (Khamooshi Cioffi, 2013). Projects that come in at or under budget when completed

Infield Training History
Competitive baseball became popular in the United States in the mid 1800s and is now one of the
leading sports in America. With the design of the field and the job of the players, this sport s positions
primarily make up a defensive team. During the game, it becomes a one man offense for each hitter.
Overall, defensive positions can be broken up into 3 different types: the battery, infielders, and
outfielders. The battery consists of the pitcher and catcher, their job is to coordinate the pitch to ensure
a strike or miss for the batter. The infielders consist of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd basemen, and shortstop. The
first baseman should excel in being able to stretch/reach for the catch so that the opponent gets out.

The American Culture And Values
Critiquing American Culture and Values: (The Social) Network The emergence of novel forms of
communication in American history tends to produce two contrasting reactions: general acceptance
from society and moral outrage from a limited, vocal portion of the public. As a medium, film was met
in such a fashion with the creation of the Production Code Administration in 1934, designed by
Catholic leaders to uphold their conception of American values. At the same time, the example of
Middletown depicted a rural community incorporating the experience of film into their regular lives,
treating it as entertainment alongside shows at the opera house. Decades later, we see film utilized to
criticize the social impact of emerging communicative methods, including television and social media
in the form of Network (1976) and The Social Network (2010). A method of universal programing, by
which centralized, censored content is broadcast in synchronous to an audience discriminant only by
which of the four major networks they choose to view is the portrayal of television afforded by the
characters aimed to garner the most sympathy in Network. The voices of reason and morality in the
film, older folks seen as untainted by television and corporate greed condemn television for replacing
genuine human interaction with hollow facades of conformity and pre scripted emotions. While
concerns over lacking human connection and false human emotions remain, social media has
produced a new problem, a

When You Know I Hate Detest And Can T Bear A Lie In Heart...
According to the Merriam Webster dictionary horror means a very strong feeling of fear, dread, and
shock . In the short novel Heart of Darkness, by Joseph Conrad, we find out how immoral ethics and
darkness come together creating horror in the perspective that no one in the story was a good person .
Meaning that no one was morally and ethically a virtuous individual based off of the ideas and
descriptions of a morally good person in the Bible. At the beginning of Heart of Darkness, Marlow
states, You know I hate, detest, and can t bear a lie, not because I am straighter than the rest of us, but
simply because it appalls me... (Conrad, 1990 Part 1 p.61). Although Marlow seems passionate about
his opinion on liars, in the last chapter of the book Marlow tracks down Kurtz s fiancé and sees a
grieving women and abandons his morals. Knowing that she was utterly in love with Kurtz he decides
to contradict his earlier statement by lying. In the Heart of Darkness she asked him what Kurtz s last
words were. Marlow lies and says that they were her name, however they were actually The horror!

  • 2. The Relevance of Behavioral Psychology to Instructional... The Relevance of Behavioral Psychology to Instructional Technology Behavioral Psychology Defined John Watson wrote a paper in the Psychological Review in 1913 and defined behavioral psychology or behaviorism as ...a purely objective experimental branch of natural science. Its theoretical goal is the prediction and control of behavior. Introspection forms no essential part of its methods, nor is the scientific value of its data dependent upon the readiness with which they lend themselves to interpretation in terms of consciousness. The behaviorist in his efforts to get a unitary scheme of animal response recognizes no dividing line between man and brute (Reynolds, Sinatra, Jetton 95). Essentially Watson s views supported the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lastly the concept of functionalism states when people think or act they do so for a purpose or function (Alberto Troutman 30). Thus behavioral psychology becomes a science emphasizing a practical and observable approach (Alberto Troutman 30). There are many behavioral psychologists that have contributed to the field. John Watson s definition provided the foundation for Ivan Pavlov and B.F. Skinner. Their work has been extremely beneficial to the development of psychology and education. Ivan Pavlov earned a Nobel Peace Price for his research on respondent conditioning. It was by chance that this discovery was made. He was studying the behavior of dogs in his laboratory. If his assistant who fed the dogs came into the laboratory when Pavlov was studying the dog s stomach, the dog began to secrete gastric liquids, just as if they had been given food. Pavlov deemed this a psychic secretion and noted that this reaction affected the whole digestive system, starting with the flow of saliva in the mouth as well as the secretion of acids in the stomach (Alberto Troutman 31). His peers discouraged him from pursuing this research, but he continued. His experiment involving the dogs included pairing food powder (which starts salivation an automatic reflex) with a tone or noise that would normally have no affect on a dog s ... Normative Thesis In chapter two, The Bases for Our Decisions and roles of Discernment, the author focuses mainly on the reason for our choices as humans, and our capability of being righteousness as individuals. The authors explains that every individual has different morals which comes to effect the decisions we make as humans. A Proposed Normative Basis: How do we approach ethics? In general everyone approaches an ethical situation differently depending on his or her priorities. When it comes to our ethical decisions we tend to approach them with normative basis. This sometimes includes our virtues, principles and the consequences that we might be able to handle. Often times, these normative basis go hand in hand and we tend to use them together when it comes to decision making. This all depends on which of the three is more important to the individual. Describing a Normative Basis A normative basis often times gives us an idea of person that we should become and how we should approach others. It can give our lives a direction by shape our lives. • 4. Components Of Engineering Design And Analysis CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1. ENGINEERING MATERIALS Materials are an important aspect of engineering design and analysis. The importance of engineering materials can be noted from the fact that historical ages have been named after materials. Materials Science forms the basic foundation for engineers in product development because the structures, components, and devices that design are limited by the properties of the materials. In the customer driven competitive business environment, the product quality is of paramount importance [1]. The product or end application quality has been found to be influenced by the engineering design, type of materials selected and the processing technology employed. Therefore, the importance of engineering materials and their process techniques are art of today s engineering world. There are wide categories of materials available which have shown their potential in various engineering applications ranging from aerospace to household. The materials are usually selected by considering their properties, specific application areas, advantages and limitations. The challenge for designers is to select an optimal material suitable for the specific design requirements. The complex design need in modern science generally lead to development of newer materials to meet the specific operating conditions and regimes [1]. The new materials are today developed from the conventional materials by both structural and surface (extrinsic) modifications. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Duality Of Evil In Voltaire s Candide Life happens, and it is full of hypocrisy, corruption, folly, and most of all, evil. In Voltaire s satiric picaresque novel, Candide, the author addresses this evil in the world and how humanity copes with it, all the while cuttingly satirizing philosophical ideals of that time. Through the character of the Old Woman, Voltaire expresses his true beliefs on the uselessness of philosophical speculation and perpetuates his exploration of how one survives in an evil world. While Voltaire explores the origins and purpose of evil in the world, the Old Woman has personally experienced the epitome of evil in the world. Previously in the novel, Voltaire s purpose had been conveyed through satirizing the actions of other characters, he truly says what he means through the story and advice of the Old Woman. She provides an effective vehicle through which to express Voltaire s ideas on how one copes with a world full of evil. The Old Woman also provides a strong juxtaposition to a famous philosopher of the time: Leibniz, whose philosophy of optimism expressed that everything must be for the best in this the most perfect of worlds. The Old Woman by her own admission has a great deal of knowledge and experience in the world (41), especially the darkest parts of the world. By her own admission, she has considered suicide multiple times, but was still fond of life (41). The Old Woman acknowledges the evil in the world, and comprehends that not everything in life is for the best a strong contradiction to Leibniz. While she may not be fond of optimism, the Old Woman still believes that life is worth living: This ridiculous weakness is, perhaps, one of the dangerous principles implanted in our nature. For what can be more absurd than to persist in carrying a burden of which we wish to be eased? to detest, and yet to strive to persevere, our existence? (41). She uses the image of a serpent as a metaphor for life. to caress the serpent that devours us, and hug him close to our bosoms till he has gnawed into our hearts? (41). The Old Woman views life not with optimism, but with strength. She perseveres not because she believes that all is for the best, but because she refuses to give up on her life. She exemplifies how Voltaire believes that humanity should deal with evil in the world: with logic, with calm, with strength, with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Celibacy in the Ministry of the Catholic Church Introduction The church has a large influence over the people, from the ancient times up until our modern age. The church, as we know it, is composed of various members who all contribute to fulfill a holy calling, and one of its constituents, who work closely with the public, are the priests. They make up the embodiment of the Catholic Church, their very existence is what makes the church operate as it is, meaning that they have an essential role to the Catholic system. With this in mind, priests represent the very image of the church so issues associated with the priests are also identified in relation to the church. As of now, there have already been various matters concerning the conduct of priests instigated by society. One of these said issues are Celibacy is the act of abstinence from marriage implicitly or explicitly made, for a more immaculate devotion to chastity, by all those who are a member of the Holy Order. Priestly celibacy has been observed by the Church for centuries with a high recognition, and retains its value undiminished even in our time when the outlook of men and the state of the world have undergone such profound changes. Amid the modern stirrings of opinion, a predisposition has been expressed, to ask the Church to reconsider this specific convention. It is said that in the world of our time the observance of celibacy has come to be difficult or even impossible. Necessity One of the main reasons why it is necessary is because everyone is ... When studying the Roman Empire, it s difficult to not admire the stunning works, such as the House of Fawn in Herculaneum or Hadrian s Villa. The wealth needed to create such places indicates the prosperity within the empire during this time. Gibbons claimed understanding on happiness and prosperity seem to have less to do with the personal lives of the human race and more with what physically surrounded the human race during this period of reign. The claim by Gibbons seems to focus on the benevolent paternalism that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If you were a prisoner of war coming to see the Forum in attempts to assimilate into this most happy and prosperous society, you were faced with images of your ancestors as captives. The forum catered to a specific class of Roman citizens and did not act as a place where the average Roman man or woman felt represented. In addition to the works of Trajan, Hadrian s Wall can also superficially symbolize the happiness and prosperity of the Roman Empire as asserted by Gibbons. The emperor Hadrian built Hadrian s Wall after returning from his visit to Britain. The construction of the wall was an attempt by Hadrian to set up permanent borders for the Roman Empire and show the strength that the Roman Empire had during the reign of Hadrian by doing so. The construction of the wall, while showing strength and wealth, also can symbolize the empires struggle with its borders, and even more so, citizenship. The wall itself symbolized the Roman Empire s tensions with the peoples surrounding the empire. The wall showed how the empire needed a structural device to maintain some level of peace within the empire. The idea of the reign of the Five Good Emperors being a time of prosperity can also be understood when looking at the changing roles of women within the empire. Women during this time period were treated differently than the woman before them. While it s difficult to assert definitively whether or not women were more respected during this ... Many historical and mythological accounts of Graeco Roman history in the classical period, involved tales of magic, worship of the gods, and emphasised the value society placed on devotion to religion. These societal beliefs and practices became evident in the literature of Greek and Roman societies, where its use, reach, and consequences was illustrated. In the only surviving Roman novel of the 2nd century AD, Apuleius Metamorphoses, readers encounter a Greek nobleman, named Lucius, whose insatiable curiosity leads him to explore magic. His over enthusiasm to intimately experience and learn about magic, accidentally causes his transformation into an ass, causing him to be subjected to a range of vulgar, exploitive, and lustful debaucheries on his path to become human again. This essay will explore how Lucius s insatiable curiosity and thirst for forbidden knowledge causes him to become a victim of magic, and how religion delivers him from its dangerous realms. Finally, this essay will comment on the contested approaches to interpreting the final book of the novel. To live out the American Dream is what once was on the minds of many Americans and still is to this day. In The Great Gatsby, the American Dream was presented as a corrupted version of what used to be a pure and honest ideal way to live. The idea that the American Dream was about the wealth and the possessions one had was ingrained, somehow, into the minds of Americans during the 1920 s. As a result of the distortion of the American Dream, the characters of F. Scott Fitzgerald s novel, The Great Gatsby lived life believing in the American Dream, as a distorted one. The American Dream gave them something to fight for. This was a chance to climb above their previous generation in terms of the social ladder. Even though it was superficial, Gatsby s outlook on life was something that could be labeled as optimistic. Although Gatsby s intentions were good he remained ignorant to the truth around him. Gatsby believed that if he worked hard he would overcome the poverty of his early life and he did just that. Gatsby though, did not strive to become a better man or a man with money for himself, but rather for Daisy. Gatsby threw around large amounts of money as if it was nothing in an attempt to win the heart of Daisy. He even threw incredibly lavish parties in hope that Daisy would one day attend. It is often assumed, and sometimes argued, that the absence of familial care and surroundings induce feelings of loneliness among the residents of old age homes. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many of the elderly parents are compelled to leave their children and stay in old age homes. The old age homes, which were a rarity, have recently spread across the country, a fact that indicates the growing rift between the generations. It is a social expectation in India that the adult sons will take care of their aged parents and the daughters take charge of the parents in case the parents do not have sons (Vatuk 1980; 1981; 1990). In case the sons stay separately from each other, the aged parents have to be under the care of one of the sons (Vatuk 1981). It is sometimes asserted that the absence of any such care will cause adjustment problems, loneliness and depression in the milieu of old age homes as the elderly persons are habituated to staying with their family members. The residents of the old age homes would find it difficult to adapt to the setting of the old age homes, which lacks the warmth and security of the family environment. There are some studies, which have indicated this factor of loneliness and depression felt by the residents of old age homes. • 25. Romantic And Romanticism In Emily Bronte s Wuthering Heights There is nothing more important than a good, safe, secure home .There s no question that the Victorians were advocates of this viewpoint. Creating a safe and righteous home was one of their most important social values that took precedence over anything else. However, this moral belief falls short in comparison to Bronte s Wuthering Heights. The novel generates irony and unfamiliarity because of all that attention given to the two houses. One would expect the novel to be only about devotion to home and that the focus is on domesticity, when in fact it was absent.
