Definition Of A Programming Language
THINK ABOUT A PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE that you have a great familiarity with: C++,
Java, Go, Scala, MYSQL, Ruby or even Python. Now reflect on this specific programming language
and you will realize there are certain conventions that you follow that actually help define the
language. The attributes that make up programming in a specific language are what programmers
utilize in their daily working environment, and they also set a standard of expectations of coding style.
Just like a programming language, there is still another significant type of writing that is used in the
Computer Science discipline, research articles. Research articles are found in every field of study
because they are used to reveal new breakthroughs within a specific ... Show more content on

The templates are merely a starting point for how to write a research article, but there is a tight
constraint as to the amount you can deviate away from the generic organizational structure of the
article. Understanding these templates will help you examine these articles for desired information.
The general structure of a research article would be as follows.
The major text of the article begins with an abstract section where the goals of the experiment are
explained briefly. Rather than asking a research question like other fields, computer science articles
will present a statement about what the objective is behind their research experiment in this section.
The abstract is followed by an introductory section that will state what the general community thinks
about the topic as well as provide a brief breakdown on what the articles sections are and what is in
each section. The next topic(s) in the article are there to describe the experiment. Within this section
subtitles are frequently used in order to organize the information presented and help the reader focus
on a particular aspect of the experiment. This is also the section where images, diagrams, and code
snippets are used to provide visual context to see what is happening. This is another aspect specific to
the computer science field. Unlike any other discipline, a writing convention within computer

According To Rachels Why Do We Survive Death

Do we survive death?
Recall: In the Do we survive Death? the most important questions that Rachels has tried to make are
several points 1) is our soul immortal? 2) Argument on if we can really have another life after death?
3) If we believe in another life, reincarnation and psychics who claim to communicate with dead then
why do they do they have to do different tricks, or lie that the evidence has occurred? 4) If we have
life then why do scientist don t believe in it? 5) Should we believe in miracles?
Summary: In this chapter Rachel has argued on the title do we survive death? The chapter talks about
how Socrates believes in life after death. According to Rachels, Socrates argues that soul can never be
destroyed. Soul cannot be burned or it cannot be ripped apart, overall Socrates believes that soul is
immortal. However the scientist have not proved it correct and they don t believe in the existence of
soul theory. Modern science talks about the mind, emotion, genetics, environment but they do not talk
about the soul. But still the question arise that does the body after death still exists in many ... Show

But after reading this chapter it is really made me curious about the things which I have been hearing

somebody s family who follow the Buddhist religion. And according to what I have seen and heard
from old people there used to be the birth of somebody who behavior, and everything used to be the
same as the priest who died. So what am I supposed to believe on now? Is it a trick? Or is it that the

The Upside Of Down Syndrome

Research Paper
The Upside of Down syndrome
Down syndrome is a common chromosomal disorder that is caused by abnormal cell division resulting
in extra genetic material from Chromosome 21. Down syndrome occurs frequently in that 1 out of 800
babies are born with this disorder. Those born with Down syndrome tend to experience specific
physical characteristics, cognitive impairments, mental and medical help problems. Down syndrome is
extremely special to me because I grew up with an aunt who has this disorder. My aunt Lisa is
beautiful, funny, outgoing, and smart. She lives and enjoys life as it is thrown to her. Some days are
harder than others, but she is 62 years old and refuses to let her disability hinder her life. Down
syndrome is not who she is, but something she has.
Dr. John Langdon Down was an English physician who had a strong calling towards mental
retardation and was the first to describe what he felt was someone with Down syndrome. He based his
findings off of distinct characteristics. Before this syndrome got the name Down syndrome he used the
term Mongloid due to the similarities that were shared in the Mongolian race. It wasn t until later
when they determined the cause of Down syndrome, which is an extra chromosome. Therefore
making Down syndrome a chromosomal disorder. This condition is characterized by a combination of
major and minor differences in body structure. Typically, doctors are able to

Cons Of Human Cloning
Introduction
The topic of cloning has brought much debate in science and also in society. Many people believe that
reproductive cloning would be beneficial while on the other hand, many people believe that it is too
risky and unethical. Reproductive cloning has shown advantages and disadvantages to humanity,
animals, and society. Through research and critical thinking, we will look at both the issues and the
benefits that come with reproductive cloning.
What is Cloning
There are three different types of artificial cloning: gene cloning, reproductive cloning, and
therapeutic cloning (Cloning Fact Sheet, 2017). Reproductive cloning is the process used when
creating a copy of an animal or human. It can also occur in nature; which happens when mammals
have identical twins. The application of somatic nuclear transfer technology to the creation of a human
being that shares all of its nuclear genes with the person donating the implanted nucleus (Pros and
Cons of Human Cloning, 2016). The process of reproductive cloning may seem relatively
straightforward; however, there is a unique and rigorous process that goes into creating a clone. First,
scientist remove a somatic cell from an animal that they wish to copy and then transfer the DNA from
the cell into an egg cell. The egg then develops into an early stage embryo while still in a test tube.
Scientists place the early stage embryo into an adult female animal s womb where it slowly develops.
Later, this female animal gives birth

Evolution Of Classical Music In The 1800 s
Plato once said, Music Gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and
life to everything. Music has touched the human soul since the dawn of time. In the Bible times, music
was directly related to the worship of God. For example, David the Psalms talks about dancing and
music to praise God with the lute, and cymbal . Music, like much of everything else, has been affected
due to the fall. Music was still mostly used for worship and praise of God until the early 1800 s.
Between the 16th and 18th Century the classical genera of music evolved greatly. Bach, Mozart, and
Vivaldi all wrote music within the classical genera, but within different eras of classical music.
1600 through 1750 saw the rise of Baroque genera

Art Analysis Of Thomas P. Anshutz s A Rose
The image I chose for this paper is titled A Rose. The image is a painting painted in oil on a canvas
and was painted by Thomas P. Anshutz. The painting was produced in Pennsylvania during 1907. I
researched this image on ARTstor by using the term realism and then I narrowed down my search by
selecting a filter to return paintings as well as setting the geography filter to North America. The
painting belongs to The Metropolitan Museum of Art s collection and is on display in the American
Wing in the gallery of Images of Woman from 1880 to 1910.
I selected this painting because the colour contrast of the pink dress against the dark background
caught my eye. I also found the expression of the young woman to be interesting.
The painting depicts a young woman in a pink dress sitting down. The background is very dark but
three things can be made out by the viewer. Starting with the ground plane of the painting, an orange
carpet can be seen covering the entire floor. It is patterned and contains yellows, greens and blues. The
cool toned colours are darker in hue than the warm toned. Secondly, there appears to be a cabinet or a
desk lining the wall behind her. The wood of the cabinetry is carved with detailed designs and is made
of a dark stained wood. Despite the dark background a single red rose can be seen on top of the
cabinetry. The rose looks freshly picked and shows no signs of withering in its petals. It is painted in a
muted red colour that allows it to stand out on

Causes And Treatment Of Lymphatic Massage
Lymphatic massage was introduced in the 1930s by Danish physiotherapists Dr. Emil Vodder and his
wife (Benjamin, 2010). His wife Astrid Vodder practiced naturopath. Emil Vodder studied at the
University of Copenhagen for biology, botany, and mineralogy, later began showing interest in the
physical medicine along with the lymphatic system. Vodder knew many scientists who had studied the
mysterious clear water centuries ago, scientist such as Gaspare Aselli (1581 1626) who discovered the
lacteal vessels in the lymphatic system, Jean Pecquet (1622 1674) described the cisterna chyli and the
thoracic duct leading to the venous arch (Wittlinger, 2004). Olaus Rudbeck discovered the lymph
vessels of the colon and rectum and confirmed that these vessels lead to the cisterna chyli as Aselli
had described already. Rudbeck was the first who discovered that the lymph from the tissue runs into
lymph vessels and to the thoracic duct back to the blood circulation. In the 18th century it was
discovered that the whole body contained lymph vessels and that the task of the lymph vessel system
is to absorb tissue liquid. Vodder and his wife moved to Paris, France in 1933 to practice the modality
on his patients (Wittlinger, 2004). The concept of lymph drainage by massage therapy is similar to
opening a valve of a tube filled with water and allowing the water to flow into another tube to release
pressure and alleviate build up in the lymph nodes. The carefully circling pumping movements

How Does Kromer Influence In Demian
The Foundation Of Childhood Life can be described as a skyscraper. When childhood morality builds
a strong foundation, one can reach great heights. However, when built with a weak, unstable
foundation, life s obstacles undermine the building, causing it to crumble to the ground. In the novel,
Demian, Hermann Hesse pursues the idea of how external influence from Emil Sinclair s peers, during
his childhood lead to his heretic belief in Abraxas. Through encounters with Kromer and Demian,
Sinclair s ethical spectrum shifts to the darker side of life, which he never confronts before, due to his
parents upbringing. Sinclair s abusive relationship with Kromer catalyzes his metamorphosis from
virtuous to villainous. Weak and vulnerable, he let[s] the devil take the hindmost (16). The devil
represents Kromer, tempting Sinclair to follow him on the Highway to Hell. Although Sinclair s ethics

guardian angel, and trusts his perspective and viewpoint. As his name reflects from the ancient Greek
language, Demian tames Sinclair, molding him into an identical clay copy of himself. He saves
Sinclair from his oppressor, only to introduce his own influence. Like Kromer, he too though

Ethos, Pathos, Logos And Uses Of Michelle Obama s Speech
Inspiration The amount of knowledge and powerful words that can actually get to one s head is
amazing. Michelle Obama was the First Lady for 8 years and stood by former President Barack
Obamas side. She is a great example of what today s kids should look up to. A woman with dedication
to her word. A woman with dedication to what she believes. It is pretty easy to say that she has
become an impressive public speaker who can deliver a powerful speech to her supporters. In her
speech at the DNC in 2016, Michelle Obama did not fill her supporter s heads with politics and facts,
but a great use of personal experience, feelings and connections. Her love for this country and her love
for her family is one thing that brought her audience together. In fact, if it wasn t the great use of
ethos, pathos and logos Michelle Obamas speech would have probably have been like any other.

The Importance Of Motivation And Leadership In Historical...
Introduction
In this report, the author will look at two theoretical concepts, motivation and leadership in Historical
Cadbury. The reason the author selected these topics to speak about were; they were a crucial part to
the success of Cadburys. This report will include motivation and leadership concepts and will be
applied to the context of Historical Cadbury. I have chosen leadership and motivation as I believe they
were fundamental to the success of Cadburys. The purpose of this report is to demonstrate an
understanding of some of the dynamics and influences at play within Cadburys. The author will also
look to demonstrate how motivation and leadership impacts in the workplace. Another element of the
discussion will be about the concepts Cadburys used in order to accomplish their organisational goals.
In conclusion, the author will give their personal opinion on whether they believe motivation and
leadership had an impact on Cadburys in the historical era.
In 1824, John Cadbury opened a grocer s shop at 93 Bull Street, Birmingham. The Cadbury business
was born in 1831, when John Cadbury decided to begin producing on a commercial scale and bought
a four storey warehouse. Cadburys was built upon Quaker beliefs. In a Quaker community, a
struggling business was a liability, falling into debt was seen as a form of theft and was punished
severely (Cadbury, 2011).
In 1861, John Cadburys health declined and he retired, handing over the business to his sons Richard

Argumentative Essay On Human Cloning
Human cloning is threatening our society. Yes it has benefits but with these benefits there s a risk. First
and foremost i disagree with cloning because, it hasn t developed yet and it can take a lot of tries
before getting a human being to this earth. On the other hand, animals have been cloned since the
beginning of this technology. They have a 70% chance of being born safely but that is not the same for
humans the percentage to clone a human is 20% to 40% which is not even past birth. There has been a
lot of failure on cloning but maybe one day it will be perfected. But over the years cloning has
increased at a more stable rate. This new cloning technology can really wrong because, you re
basically make a robot just in a human form factor. One good thing about cloning is that they can
clone certain organ cells and damaged tissue. But to do something like that it s 50,000 dollars which
only certain people can afford. That s why is not extremely common to hear someone say that they
have cloned a tissue or an organ. However cloning is not cheap it s expensive but is it worth it?
Favorably, it all depends on what you would like to clone and does it have a value to your day to day
life. Supposing that you want to clone your dog or cat the estimated price is from 25,000 thousand
dollars and it can reach higher pricing. People who have the money to do these sort of things must
have been with that pet for a long time and that pet means a lot to them. However when you re cloning
a pet yes they are going to have the same characteristics as the one who passed away. Although it won
t feel the same as having your original pet. In my opinion people are doing this because it s an outlet
for them to forget how their pet and pretend like it s still there with them. Part of these people don t
even think on what they are doing because they are so inlove with their animals. They should really
think about cloning pets and them make a decision. But if it means a lot to them then they should do it
at there own risk. Know in an article named What happened to cloning? They are stating that back in
the 2000 s they thought of banning cloning but politicians could not agree at what stage of
development cloning should be

Ward-Perkins The End Of Civilization Analysis
The disintegration of the Roman Empire, in a context comparing the range of the Empire in the first
and second century C.E. to the late fourth century C.E., is an interesting historical event to tackle.
Many historians have written works tackling this event, the most notable of these historians is Edward
Gibbon, and from him, others developed further ideas. Bryan Ward Perkins is a historian who
developed his ideas about the decline of Rome through his predecessors and supplies compelling
evidence to back up his theory that the Germanic invasions led to the fall of Rome. There are,
however, colleagues of Ward Perkins that do not share in his perception of events. Ward Perkins
monograph, entitled The Fall of Rome and The End of Civilization, was written in 2005. In his work,
Ward Perkins provides an introduction to the Roman Empire and explains how the idea that Rome fell
is viable. Through an eclectic style of writing, Ward Perkins cites evidence that isn t written; rather he
cites artifacts containing little to no writing. Through this use of this evidence Ward Perkins argues
that after the Western Roman Empire disintegrated, the previous Roman values of knowledge and
conspicuous consumerism diminished from all classes to simply the upper class. ... Show more

Heather presents the Huns as a primary component and the Germanic tribes as a secondary component
to the collapse of Rome. The primary component of the collapse, Heather argues, are the Huns
because the insecurity they generated in central and eastern Europe forced various barbarian peoples
across the Roman frontier. From this point of view, if it were not for the Huns, the Germanic people
may not have invaded the Roman Empire. Unlike Ward Perkins, Heather expresses that as the
Germanic tribes evaded the Huns, they became stronger and were able to take control of land within

Adversity In The Glass Castle By Jeannette Walls
Colson Whitehead once said, Let the broken glass be broken glass, let it splinter into smaller pieces
and dust and scatter. Let the cracks between things widen until they are no longer cracks but the new
places for things . In the memoir The Glass Castle, author Jeannette Walls faces despair and turmoil as
a result of her impoverished and dysfunctional upbringing. As Jeannette grows up, she watches her
father Rex fail to reach his full potential and his dream to build a Glass Castle shatter as his
alcoholism takes control. Aware of the devastation her father was causing, she begins to slowly lose
faith in him but doesn t fail to escape her destructive household and pursue her dreams of becoming a
journalist. Due to her parent s lack of parenting and being forced to fend for herself, Jeannette
developed a sense of responsibility to care for others and make amends to improve the family s
lifestyle. Despite the turbulence and destruction her parents had caused over the years, unlike her
father, Jeannette was able to find the strength to overcome obstacles, developing characteristics that
ultimately lead her to achieving her dream, thus illustrating that adversity has the power to shape one s

While her father s dismisses his destructive nature, Jeannette becomes conscious of his actions which
motivates her to make amends in hopes of leaving their desolate life. Instead of getting help for his

The Cultural Differences Of Athens And Sparta
Unlike many other ancient civilizations of the Near East, Greek history has a start like no other. The
Greek civilization was based upon city states, two in particular; Athens and Sparta. These two
dominants in Greek history differ from any other near east society because of their historical
background, geographical region and the cultural differences they display. The Athenian city state was
an open democratic maritime state, dominating Attica and supporting commercial and cultural
expansion. The Spartan city state had a tightly organized, militaristic, land based state, dominating the
peloponnesian peninsula. The Near east was a simple time to be alive, they had a small population and
little revolutionary advancements recorded. Early Civilization brought strangers together and
separated classes of people living side by side into distinct semi autonomous groupings (Sherman,
McNeill 17) unlike the civilization of the greek society. Athens was dominant toward the end of the
5th century. It was located in Attica. This location was a major difference from the societies of the
near east because they had no major rivers to get fresh water from and had no mountain ranges for
protection. This was a defence that many near east civilizations were built upon. Due to the lack of

America, the quintessential melting pot, allows us to experience an extraordinary amount of variety in
people when it comes to ethnicity, culture, language, personality, work ethic, and background.
High School consists of all different experiences. Sports have a huge impact on culture in many
countries, but America has uniquely created and enjoyed its own. Obviously, sports such as football
have a tremendous affect on American culture. The Football Friday Night tradition starts in high
school and continues into adulthood with college ball on Saturdays and professional ball on Sundays.
High school reflects the adult experience.

Mother Tongue Literary Analysis
Mother Tongue by Amy Tan is an example of powerful family love that helps to overcome obstacles.
According to Reinhold Niebuhr, family life is too intimate to be preserved by the spirit of justice. It
can be sustained by a spirit of love which goes beyond justice. Therefore, a family is a large organism
that needs to be nourished and maintained. Mother Tongue is a sentimental and emotional story about
a great writer Amy Tan and her lovely mother who struggles from imperfect knowledge of the
language of the country in which she lives. Mother Tongue is one of the examples of a pure and honest
love in the family of immigrants, who tried to identify themselves in the new society and overcome
the language barrier. As a Chinese woman, Amy Tan, whose culture based on respect and veneration
of parents, supports and helps her mother on a long way to tide over her broken English. (Tan 119)
The connection between a daughter and a mother allows Amy to understand her mother s limited
language just by a heart. (Tan 119) Language is a very powerful and strong instrument, but the related
blood between the two main characters is capable to express everything without the words. Amy loved
her mother so much and did not want to hurt her feelings by calling her English broken or fractured ,
as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness and soundness . (Tan
119) Despite the global misunderstanding of society and her mother, Amy thinks that her mother s
language is vivid, direct full of observation and imagery. (Tan 119) It is her mother tongue and she is
ready to protect and support her in any situations. Almost every family of immigrants going through a
process of self identification in the new society and suffers from language limitation. Amy s mother
faced many problems because of her imperfect English. Amy said: when I was fifteen, she used to
have me call people on the phone to pretend I was she. (Tan 119) Like every normal person,
immigrant need to have a medical support, a bank account and a lot of simple vital things, to get
which becomes a big problem because of language limitation. The accident in the hospital showed

Confidence Intervals
Confidence Intervals
Consider the following question: someone takes a sample from a population and finds both the sample
mean and the sample standard deviation. What can he learn from this sample mean about the
population mean?
This is an important problem and is addressed by the Central Limit Theorem. For now, let us not
bother about what this theorem states but we will look at how it could help us in answering our
question.
The Central Limit Theorem tells us that if we take very many samples the means of all these samples
will lie in an interval around the population mean. Some sample means will be larger than the
population mean, some will be smaller. The Central Limit Theorem goes on to state that 95% of the
sample means ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A brief note: Statistical software often gives slightly different but more accurate values. Let us stick
with the consensus of the majority of people working with elementary statistics and use the critical
values given above. Summarized:

|95% | 1.96 |
|99% | 2.58 |
Due to the perfect symmetry of the curve we will find the same but this time positive z values for the

Now we can start calculating confidence intervals.
Sample Mean and Standard Deviation are known, in the case of Sample Size [pic]
The confidence interval for the population mean μ in this situation is given by [pic].

We are looking at a very large group of tests. Forty five tests were selected from this group. The mean
of the sampled tests is 58 and the standard deviation is 13. Find the 95% confidence interval for the

merely collect items and protect their integrity as he preserves them he goes much further than that as
he joins forces with others who are just as passionate as he is.Michael was born in Washington DC
and considers the outskirts of Philadelphia to be his home.

Afternoons by Philip Larkin Essays
Afternoons by Philip Larkin.
A poem which reflects on the subject of marriage is Afternoons by
Philip Larkin. The poem deals with Larkin s view on young mothers watching their kids playing in a
playground and on this he concludes that marrying young and having children young, lead to the
mothers losing their identity and destiny. The techniques used by the poet such as theme, imagery and
tone deepened my understanding of the issue. The structure of the poem is simple; there are three
stanzas with eight lines in each. However, unlike every other poem by Larkin this layout has no direct
meaning. The lines are unrhymed. The first stanza deals with Larkin s rather cynical view of marriage
and deals with the idea that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By using the idea of wind in the poem, Larkin is able to add his own personal views. The wind acts as
an idea of change. This is continued moreover in the third stanza via the use of enjambement. This
enables
Larkin to carry on and develop his point.
Larkin s use of imagery is very effective. The courting places which were once used by the young
mothers are changing but so are their children. The courting places are still being used, however, the
people of whom should be using them now have the burden of children and can no longer have the fun
this place entails. The unripe acorns as described by Larkin, are the children who are still in school .
This implies Larkin, as an outsider observing and looking in, believes that as generations pass
romance is lost further and that people have children far to young. The children within the school are
not mature enough to realise what courting means. A grim humour is assumed when the reader realises
these children still have a future wereas the young mothers do not.The tone of the poem has become
increasingly more cynical. Larkin refers to how regimented the mothers lives are again when they are
expected to pick up their children from school. The women have changed immensely with the
pressures and responsibilities that the child has brought, they are putting on weight and losing their
looks, probably due to having the children. Their beauty has thickened .

Barriers To Disabled Accessibility
A further policy measure to facilitate mitigations is the legislation available to the ORR, and whilst as

Linked in with the policy tools available to central government as one of the means of mitigating
accessibility is the ability to mandate accessibility improvements through future franchise

Evaluate developments in renewable energy as a means of reducing the use of fossil fuels
OUTLINE
Thesis statement: benefits of renewable energy decreaseing the consumption of fossil fuels outweighs
its disadvantages.
Topic sentences:
1. First of all, renewable energy is more governable than nuclear power.
2. Furthermore, renewable energy is benefit to human in two ways, in particular environmentally
friendly, and reducing the consumption of fossil fuels.
3. To some extent, developments in renewable energy need to be improved to satisfy people s demand,
or people prefer using oil rather than renewable sources.
4. However, referring to two objective disadvantages of renewable resources in the modern city, some
people indicates that it is almost impossible to transfer energy providing form fossil fuels to renewable
power, one example is against powerful and illustrated the possibility sufficiently.
Conclusion: To summarize, developing renewable energy is a reasonable means to reduce the
consumption of fossil fuels.

How Did Newton s Laws Change Beliefs About Force And Motion
Beliefs about force and motion before Newton s Laws were very different than beliefs after them. One
belief, which was from Galileo, resolved that any two things that fall together, fall at the same time,
even if they are as heavy as an elephant. Another belief was from Rene Descartes. It stated that a ball
traveling, which is uninterrupted, will keep going in a straight line. Beliefs before Newton s Laws
were exceedingly different than what they are now. Newton s Laws of Motion changed beliefs about
force and motion drastically forever. The first law of motion states that an object at rest stays at rest
(Newton/Slideshow). This law is also called the Law of Inertia. Inertia is an object s intransigence to
changes with/in, which is why the first law is called this name. Newton s Laws have drastically
changed beliefs about force and motion forever. Newton s Second Law is about momentum, mass, and
acceleration. It states, When a net force acts on an object, it produces a change in the momentum of
the object in the direction in which the force acts (Newton/Slideshow). Normally, mass stays the same,
so Fnet equals mass times acceleration. Also, An object accelerates when the sum of all forces acting
on it is not zero (Slideshow). Newton s Second ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Language Issues During The Franco And Franco s The Catalan...
Language is a huge part of our construction of identity. Language allows us to feel like we belong in a
community or social group, record past events, bring people together (socially, culturally and
politically), express feelings and emotions, or develop a deeper understanding of a particular culture
and history. Moreover, every language is constantly changing over time and more people are
becoming more open to learn more than one language. Spain is one the countries which deals with
multilingualism. More specifically, in Catalonia, where being bilingual is no longer a controversy in
today s society. My objective of this paper is to further explore bilingualism from during Franco and
after Franco regarding the Catalan language and the Castilian (Spanish) language in the state of
Catalonia in Spain. My research will be guided by the following questions: What were the language
issues during the Franco regime and after Franco s death? Were there any consequences during the
Franco regime? What is the current language situation in Catalonia? How has it affected Spain? Is one
language more important than the other? Are educational institutions required to teach Catalan as well
as Castilian? The paper will be organized as follows: First, I will provide a brief history of Catalonia s
linguistic issues during the Franco regime (1939 1975). Second, I will explain the language policy
changes after Franco s reign. Third, I will discuss bilingualism in Catalonia from the last few years

Cathedral (by Raymond Carver)
Cathedral: A Lesson for the Ages
Raymond Carver s short story, Cathedral, portrays a story in which many in today s society can relate.
We are introduced from the first sentence of the story to a man that seems to be perturbed and agitated.
As readers, we are initially unsure to the reasoning s behind the man s discomfort. The man, who
seems to be a direct portrayal of Raymond Carver himself, shows his ignorance by stereotyping a
blind man by the name of Robert, who has come to stay with he and his wife. From the very
beginning, Carver shows his detest for Robert but over the course of the story eases into comfort with
him and in the end is taught a lesson from the very one he despised.
The story begins with a description of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That s alright, he says, I m glad for the company. The two then focus their attention to the television
and some middle age show about cathedrals. It is this show from which the author gets the name of
this short story, Cathedral . It also is relevant because it gives the blind man the opportunity to share
with Carver his state of mind.
The blind man sees the TV show as a way for him to express his views to Carver. After inquiring into
the show, Robert asks Carver to simply explain what the Cathedral s look like. Carver does this but
soon realizes that he is not doing a very good job. I m not doing so good am I. This doesn t work so
Robert then asks the author if would mind drawing one with him. Carver agrees and leaves to gather
supplies. Before long, he returns and they begin their project. We at this point the strong change in
interaction between the two characters. The blind man diligently places his hand on that of Carver and
they draw, together. The two are intently drawing the cathedral when Robert asks Carver to keep
drawing but with his eyes closed too. He obeys and continues this is the climax of the story for Carver
now briefly gets a glimpse of what it is like to live with the ailment of blindness. He is temporarily
awed at the feeling for it is one he has obviously never experienced. It really something , he says (515)

Bird’s Eye- view of Foucauldian Perspective to Commercial...
Michel Foucault was a French philosopher or a historian of systems of thought. His theories addressed
the relationship between power and knowledge, and how they are used as a form of social control
through societal institutions. Through his impressive career Foucault became known for his many
demonstrative arguments that power depends not on material relations or authority but instead
primarily on discursive networks. The sole purpose of the present research paper is to evaluate the
power relations which exist within the hierarchies and the workers. The Foucauldian perspective plays
an important part in terms of an understanding of power, despite the fact that it is very different to
fully comprehend the meanings behind Foucault s works. (McHoul and Grace, 1993, viii) A
Dictionary of Political Thought (1983) commented on power as: The ability to achieve whatever effect
is desired, whether or not in the face of opposition. Power is a matter of degree: it can be conferred,
delegated, shared and limited...power may be exercised through influence or through control...power
is an undisputable fact... (Scruton, 1983) Power varies according to the individual s wants and
requirements for it. It can be exercised either by influence or by control. It exists in multifarious
forms. Power is totally dependent on relationships. Power is neither given, nor exchanged, nor

Executive summary
The aim of this report is try to evaluate how the insurance industry has developed in Brazil since it
began its operation in 1808, operating in the begging only with maritime insurance through company
named Boa Fé. During that time Brazil was still a colony of Portugal and Boa Fé Company had the

In 2012, that market grossed U.S. $ 252.4 billion in direct premiums of insurance, health insurance,
pension contributions and savings bonds. Such awards and contributions served to increase provisions
amounting to R$ 420 billion, which represented 5.69 % of GDP. Provisions have also secured the
payment of compensation of claims, welfare benefits and redemption of pension plans and
capitalization of R $ 135.2 billion in 2012 (3.05% of GDP). The importance of the sector exceeds, by
far, the numeric expression. Indeed, everyday life, as we know since the Industrial Revolution, would
be impossible without insurance. The companies could not take risks as they do at present, so your
investment would be severely restricted and, with them, the future expansion of the economies. Entire
markets would collapse: just imagine what would happen with the sale of cars, with the credit market
and the trade if there was not the support of insurance. The insurance industry, increasingly
supplements the State in providing critical services in health and social security, and in doing so,
allows the state to focus attention and resources on meeting the needs of the poorest sectors of the
population.
Nowadays The Brazilian insurance industry is living it golden ages. Brazil for the past two decades
has become one of the most attractive places for insurance

Case Study On The Retail Value Chain

Summary of the article: The Retail Value Chain
In the article, the writers tested the inter connections between staff impressions toward their
performances and affect consumer evaluations which would have impact on the sales profits of the
organisation.
To summarize the findings of writers, The Heskett and Colleagues framework (Appendix 1) shows
how staffs productivity affects consumer opinions and loyalty and how internal management factors
affect staff opinions and loyalty. This framework also helps organisation to a better view of how
service provided and internal service quality affect consumer opinions, behavior and spending.

Authors suggest that staff impressions of the job have a greater impact than staff achievements on
consumer opinions (Hurtz and Donovan 2000, Bowen et al. 1999, Masterson 2001) and found that
customer opinion will strongly rely on staff extended performance towards consumer than the other
two dimensions (Bitner et al. 1990, Bettencourt and Brown 2003). Consumer opinions and control
variables affected the average consumer spending per transaction. Store performance depends on
comparable sales profit of which affected by average consumer spending per transaction. Indirect and
total effects are important as well. Indirect effects are the variable effects at or near the beginning of
the system while total effects are the sum of direct and indirect effects (Bollen 1989). Example of
indirect effects is that although the direct effects of staff achievements are not very important to
average consumer spending per transaction and comparable sales profits but the effect on staff
achievements to consumer opinions leads to average consumer spending per transaction and
comparable sales profits is indirect and it is also

Puerto Rican Political Parties
As a child growing up in Puerto Rico I attended many political campaigns with my father. He was the
true meaning of the word fanatic when it came to politics and he had been a politician at an earlier
time in his life also. He believed with every fiber in his body that Puerto Rico should become the fifty

In Puerto Rico, political parties are associated to the three status choices. There is the New Progressive
Party that supports statehood, also the Popular Democratic Party for the commonwealth status and the
Puerto Rican Independence Party that prefers as it s name state, independence. These three ideals have
painted the landscape of the island s political history with the pro statehood and pro commonwealth

Florida International University Parking
Purpose: I hope to provide possible ways to improve the services provided to aid the parking issues

where students feel motivated enough to want to participate in the services. Another of the services
that I plan to talk about is the parking space locator. The parking space locator is beneficial, but it can
be improved, for example, it only says how much space is taken up in a parking garage, given in
percentages, but it does not show on which floors the free spots are located. Clemson has a similar
system with the exact location though, ...students can grab their smartphones before they hop in their
cars, home in on precious empty spots, and drive straight to the destination. That s a far cry from the
experience of circling blocks and lots for half an hour in search of a spot (Fliegler). I feel that with that
little bit of information could make the service much more

The Ragtime Vs. The Blues
¬Ragtime vs. The Blues
In the city of New Orleans emerged one of the most influential music genres in U.S. history. At the
time, New Orleans was known for being a melting pot of people or rather, a region where people from
all over the world came together in one place. This city served as a key seaport in the U.S. allowing
for goods to be imported and exported. The purpose of this city was not only strategic to the growth of
the country, but also, the atmosphere allowed for the incredible mixing of cultures, customs, and
traditions that led to the creation of one of our nations most cherished genres of music: jazz.
Jazz emerged towards the beginning of the 20th century, but didn t just spring up out of nowhere.
Instead, it was a creation that developed from popular music styles of the 19th century that were
blended and combined to entertain not only the social dancers, but also, the nation as a whole. The two
main music styles that jazz evolved from were ragtime and the blues. Both ragtime and the blues had
their beginnings in African American communities. While both of these music styles strongly
contributed to the creation of jazz and have a lot of similarities, they do have their differences. These
differences lie within their origins, their instruments, the elements of the music styles and how these
elements influenced jazz, and their artists and composers.
First of all, ragtime and the blues are similar in that they both originated in the United States. While

Bathroom Improvement Plan
It s the age old question how do I quickly, easily and cost effectively renovate my bathroom? Well, as
with anything, there are a million ways to do this, ranging from extremely expensive and complicated
to simple, cheap fixes which can transform the feel of your bathroom. We wanted to use this article to
showcase a few of the ways you can remodel your bathroom with small design elements to create a
huge change.
Paint
One of the simplest and most effective change to a bathroom, or any room for that matter, is to cover it
in a fresh coat of paint. This can dramatically change the look and feel of any bathroom and make it
seem like a more inviting and personal space. Dark, warm colors can portray a serene, somber mood
while light and vibrant yellows and blues can create an airy feel. Depending on how bad of shape your
bathroom is before you start your project, you may need to do some touch up work on the walls before
you begin. This may include sanding and drywall, most of which can be done by the weekend
renovator. For large holes or damage, it may be worth hiring a contractor to complete this for you.

are willing to devote a little bit of time to finding them. Also, when you are considering how you are
going to install your new mirror, take the time to consider how your light fixtures will be positioned

Natural Remedies And Its Effects
Natural remedies have been used throughout history and within every culture to prevent and treat
diseases. Specifically, plants have provided the foundation to alternative medicine, with some such as
digoxin becoming adopted into conventional medicine (Walden Tomlinson, 2011). Garlic (Allium
sativum) in specific has a long history of both medicinal and culinary use, and has been more closely
examined than many other herbs due to its weight in health benefits. The intact cells of garlic bulbs
contain an odourless sulphur containing amino acid, allinin, which has potent antibacterial properties
and is highly odoriferous and unstable (Ebadi, 2006). Alliin is acted upon by the enzyme allinase to
produce allicin, which produces the characteristic garlic odour and much of the pharmacological
activity of garlic (Ebadi, 2006; Braun Cohen, 2010). Asides from organosulfur compounds, garlic
bulbs also contain protein, amino acids, fibre, lipids, phytic acid, saponins, beta sitosterol and minerals
such as vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene, chromium, iron and selenium; all of which contribute
largely to the medicinal use of garlic (Braun Cohen, 2010). This essay seeks to explore in depth the
cardioprotective, anti microbial and potentially anti cancer actions of garlic as growing evidence
suggests these as the more effective natural remedy uses of garlic (Boon Smith, 2004). Garlic has
often been claimed as an effective herbal remedy for preventing chronic diseases

  • 8. Art Analysis Of Thomas P. Anshutz s A Rose The image I chose for this paper is titled A Rose. The image is a painting painted in oil on a canvas and was painted by Thomas P. Anshutz. The painting was produced in Pennsylvania during 1907. I researched this image on ARTstor by using the term realism and then I narrowed down my search by selecting a filter to return paintings as well as setting the geography filter to North America. The painting belongs to The Metropolitan Museum of Art s collection and is on display in the American Wing in the gallery of Images of Woman from 1880 to 1910. I selected this painting because the colour contrast of the pink dress against the dark background caught my eye. I also found the expression of the young woman to be interesting. The painting depicts a young woman in a pink dress sitting down. The background is very dark but three things can be made out by the viewer. Starting with the ground plane of the painting, an orange carpet can be seen covering the entire floor. It is patterned and contains yellows, greens and blues. The cool toned colours are darker in hue than the warm toned. Secondly, there appears to be a cabinet or a desk lining the wall behind her. The wood of the cabinetry is carved with detailed designs and is made of a dark stained wood. Despite the dark background a single red rose can be seen on top of the cabinetry. The rose looks freshly picked and shows no signs of withering in its petals. It is painted in a muted red colour that allows it to stand out on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Causes And Treatment Of Lymphatic Massage Lymphatic massage was introduced in the 1930s by Danish physiotherapists Dr. Emil Vodder and his wife (Benjamin, 2010). His wife Astrid Vodder practiced naturopath. Emil Vodder studied at the University of Copenhagen for biology, botany, and mineralogy, later began showing interest in the physical medicine along with the lymphatic system. Vodder knew many scientists who had studied the mysterious clear water centuries ago, scientist such as Gaspare Aselli (1581 1626) who discovered the lacteal vessels in the lymphatic system, Jean Pecquet (1622 1674) described the cisterna chyli and the thoracic duct leading to the venous arch (Wittlinger, 2004). Olaus Rudbeck discovered the lymph vessels of the colon and rectum and confirmed that these vessels lead to the cisterna chyli as Aselli had described already. Rudbeck was the first who discovered that the lymph from the tissue runs into lymph vessels and to the thoracic duct back to the blood circulation. In the 18th century it was discovered that the whole body contained lymph vessels and that the task of the lymph vessel system is to absorb tissue liquid. Vodder and his wife moved to Paris, France in 1933 to practice the modality on his patients (Wittlinger, 2004). The concept of lymph drainage by massage therapy is similar to opening a valve of a tube filled with water and allowing the water to flow into another tube to release pressure and alleviate build up in the lymph nodes. However, when built with a weak, unstable foundation, life s obstacles undermine the building, causing it to crumble to the ground. In the novel, Demian, Hermann Hesse pursues the idea of how external influence from Emil Sinclair s peers, during his childhood lead to his heretic belief in Abraxas. Through encounters with Kromer and Demian, Sinclair s ethical spectrum shifts to the darker side of life, which he never confronts before, due to his parents upbringing. Sinclair s abusive relationship with Kromer catalyzes his metamorphosis from virtuous to villainous. Weak and vulnerable, he let[s] the devil take the hindmost (16). • 14. Argumentative Essay On Human Cloning Human cloning is threatening our society. Yes it has benefits but with these benefits there s a risk. First and foremost i disagree with cloning because, it hasn t developed yet and it can take a lot of tries before getting a human being to this earth. On the other hand, animals have been cloned since the beginning of this technology. They have a 70% chance of being born safely but that is not the same for humans the percentage to clone a human is 20% to 40% which is not even past birth. There has been a lot of failure on cloning but maybe one day it will be perfected. But over the years cloning has increased at a more stable rate. This new cloning technology can really wrong because, you re basically make a robot just in a human form factor. One good thing about cloning is that they can clone certain organ cells and damaged tissue. But to do something like that it s 50,000 dollars which only certain people can afford. That s why is not extremely common to hear someone say that they have cloned a tissue or an organ. However cloning is not cheap it s expensive but is it worth it? Favorably, it all depends on what you would like to clone and does it have a value to your day to day life. Supposing that you want to clone your dog or cat the estimated price is from 25,000 thousand dollars and it can reach higher pricing. People who have the money to do these sort of things must have been with that pet for a long time and that pet means a lot to them. However when you re cloning a pet yes they are going to have the same characteristics as the one who passed away. Although it won t feel the same as having your original pet. In my opinion people are doing this because it s an outlet for them to forget how their pet and pretend like it s still there with them. Part of these people don t even think on what they are doing because they are so inlove with their animals. They should really think about cloning pets and them make a decision. But if it means a lot to them then they should do it at there own risk. Know in an article named What happened to cloning? Ward-Perkins The End Of Civilization Analysis The disintegration of the Roman Empire, in a context comparing the range of the Empire in the first and second century C.E. to the late fourth century C.E., is an interesting historical event to tackle. Many historians have written works tackling this event, the most notable of these historians is Edward Gibbon, and from him, others developed further ideas. Bryan Ward Perkins is a historian who developed his ideas about the decline of Rome through his predecessors and supplies compelling evidence to back up his theory that the Germanic invasions led to the fall of Rome. There are, however, colleagues of Ward Perkins that do not share in his perception of events. Ward Perkins monograph, entitled The Fall of Rome and The End of Civilization, was written in 2005. In his work, Ward Perkins provides an introduction to the Roman Empire and explains how the idea that Rome fell is viable. Through an eclectic style of writing, Ward Perkins cites evidence that isn t written; rather he cites artifacts containing little to no writing. Through this use of this evidence Ward Perkins argues that after the Western Roman Empire disintegrated, the previous Roman values of knowledge and conspicuous consumerism diminished from all classes to simply the upper class. ... The Greek civilization was based upon city states, two in particular; Athens and Sparta. These two dominants in Greek history differ from any other near east society because of their historical background, geographical region and the cultural differences they display. The Athenian city state was an open democratic maritime state, dominating Attica and supporting commercial and cultural expansion. The Spartan city state had a tightly organized, militaristic, land based state, dominating the peloponnesian peninsula. The Near east was a simple time to be alive, they had a small population and little revolutionary advancements recorded. Early Civilization brought strangers together and separated classes of people living side by side into distinct semi autonomous groupings (Sherman, McNeill 17) unlike the civilization of the greek society. Athens was dominant toward the end of the 5th century. It was located in Attica. According to Reinhold Niebuhr, family life is too intimate to be preserved by the spirit of justice. It can be sustained by a spirit of love which goes beyond justice. Therefore, a family is a large organism that needs to be nourished and maintained. Mother Tongue is a sentimental and emotional story about a great writer Amy Tan and her lovely mother who struggles from imperfect knowledge of the language of the country in which she lives. Mother Tongue is one of the examples of a pure and honest love in the family of immigrants, who tried to identify themselves in the new society and overcome the language barrier. As a Chinese woman, Amy Tan, whose culture based on respect and veneration of parents, supports and helps her mother on a long way to tide over her broken English. (Tan 119) The connection between a daughter and a mother allows Amy to understand her mother s limited language just by a heart. (Tan 119) Language is a very powerful and strong instrument, but the related blood between the two main characters is capable to express everything without the words. Amy loved her mother so much and did not want to hurt her feelings by calling her English broken or fractured , as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness and soundness . (Tan 119) Despite the global misunderstanding of society and her mother, Amy thinks that her mother s language is vivid, direct full of observation and imagery. Almost every family of immigrants going through a process of self identification in the new society and suffers from language limitation. What can he learn from this sample mean about the population mean? This is an important problem and is addressed by the Central Limit Theorem. For now, let us not bother about what this theorem states but we will look at how it could help us in answering our question. The Central Limit Theorem tells us that if we take very many samples the means of all these samples will lie in an interval around the population mean. Some sample means will be larger than the population mean, some will be smaller. The Central Limit Theorem goes on to state that 95% of the sample means ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The poem deals with Larkin s view on young mothers watching their kids playing in a playground and on this he concludes that marrying young and having children young, lead to the mothers losing their identity and destiny. The techniques used by the poet such as theme, imagery and tone deepened my understanding of the issue. The structure of the poem is simple; there are three stanzas with eight lines in each. However, unlike every other poem by Larkin this layout has no direct meaning. The lines are unrhymed. By using the idea of wind in the poem, Larkin is able to add his own personal views. The wind acts as an idea of change. This is continued moreover in the third stanza via the use of enjambement. This enables Larkin to carry on and develop his point. Larkin s use of imagery is very effective. The courting places which were once used by the young mothers are changing but so are their children. The courting places are still being used, however, the people of whom should be using them now have the burden of children and can no longer have the fun this place entails. The unripe acorns as described by Larkin, are the children who are still in school . This implies Larkin, as an outsider observing and looking in, believes that as generations pass romance is lost further and that people have children far to young. The children within the school are not mature enough to realise what courting means. A grim humour is assumed when the reader realises these children still have a future wereas the young mothers do not.The tone of the poem has become increasingly more cynical. Larkin refers to how regimented the mothers lives are again when they are expected to pick up their children from school. The women have changed immensely with the pressures and responsibilities that the child has brought, they are putting on weight and losing their looks, probably due to having the children. One belief, which was from Galileo, resolved that any two things that fall together, fall at the same time, even if they are as heavy as an elephant. Another belief was from Rene Descartes. It stated that a ball traveling, which is uninterrupted, will keep going in a straight line. Beliefs before Newton s Laws were exceedingly different than what they are now. Newton s Laws of Motion changed beliefs about force and motion drastically forever. The first law of motion states that an object at rest stays at rest (Newton/Slideshow). Moreover, every language is constantly changing over time and more people are becoming more open to learn more than one language. Spain is one the countries which deals with multilingualism. More specifically, in Catalonia, where being bilingual is no longer a controversy in today s society. My objective of this paper is to further explore bilingualism from during Franco and after Franco regarding the Catalan language and the Castilian (Spanish) language in the state of Catalonia in Spain. My research will be guided by the following questions: What were the language issues during the Franco regime and after Franco s death? Were there any consequences during the Franco regime? What is the current language situation in Catalonia? How has it affected Spain? Is one language more important than the other? Are educational institutions required to teach Catalan as well as Castilian? The paper will be organized as follows: First, I will provide a brief history of Catalonia s linguistic issues during the Franco regime (1939 1975). Second, I will explain the language policy changes after Franco s reign. Third, I will discuss bilingualism in Catalonia from the last few years ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. Bird’s Eye- view of Foucauldian Perspective to Commercial... Michel Foucault was a French philosopher or a historian of systems of thought. His theories addressed the relationship between power and knowledge, and how they are used as a form of social control through societal institutions. Through his impressive career Foucault became known for his many demonstrative arguments that power depends not on material relations or authority but instead primarily on discursive networks. The sole purpose of the present research paper is to evaluate the power relations which exist within the hierarchies and the workers. The Foucauldian perspective plays an important part in terms of an understanding of power, despite the fact that it is very different to fully comprehend the meanings behind Foucault s works. (McHoul and Grace, 1993, viii) A Dictionary of Political Thought (1983) commented on power as: The ability to achieve whatever effect is desired, whether or not in the face of opposition. Power is a matter of degree: it can be conferred, delegated, shared and limited...power may be exercised through influence or through control...power is an undisputable fact... (Scruton, 1983) Power varies according to the individual s wants and requirements for it. It can be exercised either by influence or by control. It exists in multifarious forms. Provisions have also secured the payment of compensation of claims, welfare benefits and redemption of pension plans and capitalization of R $ 135.2 billion in 2012 (3.05% of GDP). The importance of the sector exceeds, by far, the numeric expression. Indeed, everyday life, as we know since the Industrial Revolution, would be impossible without insurance. The companies could not take risks as they do at present, so your investment would be severely restricted and, with them, the future expansion of the economies. Entire markets would collapse: just imagine what would happen with the sale of cars, with the credit market and the trade if there was not the support of insurance. The insurance industry, increasingly supplements the State in providing critical services in health and social security, and in doing so, allows the state to focus attention and resources on meeting the needs of the poorest sectors of the population. Case Study On The Retail Value Chain Case Study: Big Bytes Summary of the article: The Retail Value Chain In the article, the writers tested the inter connections between staff impressions toward their performances and affect consumer evaluations which would have impact on the sales profits of the organisation. To summarize the findings of writers, The Heskett and Colleagues framework (Appendix 1) shows how staffs productivity affects consumer opinions and loyalty and how internal management factors affect staff opinions and loyalty. Florida International University Parking Purpose: I hope to provide possible ways to improve the services provided to aid the parking issues that are found on the Florida International University. The issue of parking at Florida International University is the lack of being able to find parking at most given times. Although some progress has been made, the solutions Florida International University has implemented have not been successful in helping the parking problem. Another of the services that I plan to talk about is the parking space locator. The parking space locator is beneficial, but it can be improved, for example, it only says how much space is taken up in a parking garage, given in percentages, but it does not show on which floors the free spots are located. Clemson has a similar system with the exact location though, ...students can grab their smartphones before they hop in their cars, home in on precious empty spots, and drive straight to the destination. That s a far cry from the experience of circling blocks and lots for half an hour in search of a spot (Fliegler). I feel that with that little bit of information could make the service much more ... • 40. The Ragtime Vs. The Blues ¬Ragtime vs. The Blues In the city of New Orleans emerged one of the most influential music genres in U.S. history. At the time, New Orleans was known for being a melting pot of people or rather, a region where people from all over the world came together in one place. This city served as a key seaport in the U.S. allowing for goods to be imported and exported. The purpose of this city was not only strategic to the growth of the country, but also, the atmosphere allowed for the incredible mixing of cultures, customs, and traditions that led to the creation of one of our nations most cherished genres of music: jazz. Jazz emerged towards the beginning of the 20th century, but didn t just spring up out of nowhere. Instead, it was a creation that developed from popular music styles of the 19th century that were blended and combined to entertain not only the social dancers, but also, the nation as a whole. The two main music styles that jazz evolved from were ragtime and the blues. Both ragtime and the blues had their beginnings in African American communities. While both of these music styles strongly contributed to the creation of jazz and have a lot of similarities, they do have their differences. These differences lie within their origins, their instruments, the elements of the music styles and how these elements influenced jazz, and their artists and composers. First of all, ragtime and the blues are similar in that they both originated in the United States. While the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. Natural Remedies And Its Effects Natural remedies have been used throughout history and within every culture to prevent and treat diseases. Specifically, plants have provided the foundation to alternative medicine, with some such as digoxin becoming adopted into conventional medicine (Walden Tomlinson, 2011). Garlic (Allium sativum) in specific has a long history of both medicinal and culinary use, and has been more closely examined than many other herbs due to its weight in health benefits. The intact cells of garlic bulbs contain an odourless sulphur containing amino acid, allinin, which has potent antibacterial properties and is highly odoriferous and unstable (Ebadi, 2006). Alliin is acted upon by the enzyme allinase to produce allicin, which produces the characteristic garlic odour and much of the pharmacological activity of garlic (Ebadi, 2006; Braun Cohen, 2010). Asides from organosulfur compounds, garlic bulbs also contain protein, amino acids, fibre, lipids, phytic acid, saponins, beta sitosterol and minerals such as vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene, chromium, iron and selenium; all of which contribute largely to the medicinal use of garlic (Braun Cohen, 2010). This essay seeks to explore in depth the cardioprotective, anti microbial and potentially anti cancer actions of garlic as growing evidence suggests these as the more effective natural remedy uses of garlic (Boon Smith, 2004).
