This document discusses goat and sheep production in the Philippines. It provides an introduction to goats and sheep, including the common breeds raised. 3. Introduction: GOAT
 Goat is defined as a hardy domesticated small
ruminant that has backward curving horns, cloven
hooves and a beard(male). This animal is usually
raised for meat and milk.
 Goat has two types:
1. Domesticated Goats (Capra hircus) - raised as
farm animals
2. Mountain Goats (Oreamnosamericanus) - that
thrive in steep, rocky areas in the American
Northwest.

 The common goat and the Dadiangas goat
(originated from General Santos City) are among
the goats raised by most Filipino farmers.
 Some farmers are also raising exotic breeds like
Anglo-Nubian, Toggernburg, Saanen, French
Alpine, and Boer.

 Goat production in the country is considered as
a sunrise industry. There is potential in the small
ruminant industry of the Philippines especially
that our country was declared by the World
Organization for Animal Health (OIE) as Peste
des Petits Ruminants (PPR)-free and Foot-and-
Mouth Disease (FMD)-free without vaccination
with all its zone equally recognized.

6. Goat End-Products
 Four (4) major products can be derived from
goats namely:
1. Chevon
2. Raw Milk - an input to a number of products like
yoghurt, ice cream, butter, cheese, sweets (e.g.
pastillas), soap, lotion, among others.
3. Mohair/Cashmere - can be converted into
sweaters, clothes, socks and scarves.
4. Breeder animals.

8. Introduction: SHEEP
 Sheep (Ovis aries) is another small ruminant
that is being raised for its meat, milk and wool. It
is usually stockier than goat and unlike goat, male
sheep has no beard.
Generally, it is raised for meat, pet and seldom
as source of livelihood to increase family income.
Philippine sheep weighs 29 kilograms for
average matured.

 According to Philippine Statistics Authority
(2022), the total goat production from January
to March 2022 was recorded at 𝟏𝟓. 𝟐𝟎
thousand metric tons, liveweight. This indicates
a −𝟕. 𝟓 percent drop from its previous year’s
same quarter level of 𝟏𝟔. 𝟒𝟑 thousand metric
tons, liveweight.

13. GOAT PRODUCTION
 The top producer regions of goats in the
Philippines are the following:
1. Ilocos Region was the top producer of goat
during the quarter with 𝟐. 𝟏𝟒 thousand metric
tons, liveweight or 𝟏𝟒. 𝟏 percent share.
2. Central Visayas with 𝟏𝟐. 𝟕 percent;
3. Western Visayas with 𝟏𝟎. 𝟔 percent;
4. Northern Mindanao with 𝟏𝟎. 𝟓 percent; and
5. Davao Region with 𝟖. 𝟖 percent.

 Based on the data presented by the Philippine
Statistics Authority (2022), there were 𝟏𝟎 regions
decreases in production during the quarter.
 Central Visayas recorded the highest annual
reduction of −𝟐𝟒. 𝟔 percent, from 𝟐. 𝟓𝟔 thousand
metric tons, liveweight in the same period of the
previous year to 𝟏. 𝟗𝟑 thousand metric
tons, liveweight in the same period of 2022.

 The country’s total goat inventory was
estimated at 𝟑. 𝟗𝟏 million heads.
 About 𝟏𝟒. 𝟖 percent of the goat population was
recorded in Central Visayas, followed by Western
Visayas with 𝟏𝟑. 𝟎 percent and Ilocos Region
with 𝟏𝟏. 𝟔 percent.
These three regions accounted for 𝟑𝟗. 𝟒 percent
of the country’s total goat inventory.

 Goat production from April to June 2022 was
registered at 𝟏𝟔. 𝟑𝟔 thousand metric tons,
liveweight. It recorded an annual decrease of
− 𝟔. 𝟕 percent relative to its last year’s level of
𝟏𝟕. 𝟓𝟑 thousand metric tons, liveweight
(Philippine Statistics Authority, 2022).

1. Central Visayas with 𝟐. 𝟐𝟐 thousand metric
tons, liveweight or 𝟏𝟑. 𝟔 percent share.
2. Northern Mindanao with 𝟐. 𝟏𝟗 thousand
metric tons, liveweight;
3. Central Luzon with 𝟏. 𝟔𝟗 thousand metric
tons, liveweight;
4. Davao Region with 𝟏. 𝟔𝟖 thousand metric
tons, liveweight; and
5. Ilocos Region with 𝟏. 𝟔𝟖 thousand metric tons,
liveweight.

20. GOAT PRODUCTION
 There were nine (9) regions posted
contraction in their production during the
quarter (Philippine Statistics Authority, 2022).
 Caraga registered the biggest annual decline
of −𝟑𝟑. 𝟕 percent from 𝟎. 𝟏𝟕 thousand metric
tons, liveweight in the same period last year to
𝟎. 𝟏𝟏 thousand metric tons, liveweight this
quarter of 2022.

 Total goat inventory as of 30 June 2022
reached 𝟑. 𝟗𝟎 million heads. This was lower by -
𝟏. 𝟒 percent from the previous year’s count of
𝟑. 𝟗𝟓 million heads.
 Population of goat in backyard farms and
commercial farms diminished by −𝟏. 𝟎 percent
and −𝟑𝟔. 𝟏 percent, respectively. Backyard
farms accounted for 𝟗𝟗. 𝟐 percent, while
commercial farms comprised the remaining 𝟎. 𝟖
percent.

 There is no available information on the
volume and value of sheep production in the
Philippines since sheep is not included in the
data systems of the Livestock and Poultry
Statistics Division (LPSD) of Philippine
Statistics Authority (PSA) is not monitoring the
data. They considered sheep as an emerging
commodity (Bureau of Animal Industry, 2022).

26. SHEEP PRODUCTION
 There is no much information available with
regards to sheep inventory in the Philippines.
Only in 2010 when the Philippine Statistics
Authority was able to collect data on sheep
population through a Livestock Population
Survey (LPS) (2010). According to the survey,
the total sheep population recorded was
𝟒𝟗, 𝟕𝟒𝟕 head as of April, 2010 (Bureau of
Animal Industry, 2022).

1. Central Luzon (Region III) obtained the
highest share at 𝟐𝟒%;
2. Ilocos Region (I) distantly followed with 𝟏𝟐%
share;
3. Davao Region (XI) with 𝟏𝟎%;
4. Cagayan Valley (Region II) with 𝟗. 𝟏%; and
5. Northern Mindanao (Region X) 𝟖. 𝟖%
The top 5 regions comprised more than half of the
sheep population (𝟔𝟒%) (Bureau of Animal
Industry, 2022).
