Urban sensing, participatory sensing, and user activity recognition can provide rich contextual information for mobile applications such as social networking and location-based services. However, continuously capturing this contextual information on mobile devices consumes huge amount of energy. In this paper, we present a novel design framework for an Energy Efficient Mobile Sensing System (EEMSS). EEMSS uses hierarchical sensor management strategy to recognize user states as well as to detect state transitions. By powering only a minimum set of sensors and using appropriate sensor duty cycles EEMSS significantly improves device battery life. We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of EEMSS that automatically recognizes a set of users' daily activities in real time using sensors on an off-the-shelf high-end smart phone. Evaluation of EEMSS with 10 users over one week shows that our approach increases the device battery life by more than 75% while maintaining both high accuracy and low latency in identifying transitions between end-user activities.

Major technology advancements in Laser Radar (LADAR) have made a profound new impact on future mobile, airborne and space-based missions. In an effort to cope with problems such as target clutter, battlefield commanders require a new breed of LADAR, consisting of new programs such as Jigsaw and True 3D Flash. New LADAR systems and applications are currently in development, and will be based on entirely new technology, which has not been feasible until just now. These new LADAR technologies will support the Service-wide drive for a Single Integrated Air Picture (SIAP), which provides military forces access to reliable information about ground, air, space or undersea threats in any given theater of operations to achieve total theater air dominance. Developmental challenges are vast for LADAR and opportunities for industry involvement appear to be endless.

Game of Drones: Using IoT, Machine Learning, Drones, and Networking to Solve World Hunger
Drones are increasingly used in various commercial and consumer scenarios – from agriculture drones (providing farmers with crop and irrigation patterns) to consumer drones (that follow you around as you engage in action sports), to drone racing. Drones are outfitted with a large number of sensors (cameras, accelerometers, gyros, etc.), and can continuously stream these signals in real time for analysis.
This talk introduces the landscape of the various drone technologies that are currently available, and shows you how to acquire and analyze the real-time signals from the drones to design intelligent applications in an IoT pipeline. We will demonstrate how to leverage machine learning models that perform real-time facial detection along with predictions of age, gender, emotion, and object recognition using the signals acquired from the drones. You will walk away understanding the basics of how to develop applications that utilize and visualize these real-time insights.
This talk includes fun with drones, how to tackle the problem of world hunger, and some Game of Thrones silliness. It is targeted at data scientists, students, researchers, and IT professionals who have an interest in building intelligent applications using drones and machine learning. It will be a fun and exciting exploration as we demonstrate a drone with the power of recognizing faces, ages, genders, emotions, and objects. You will learn how to leverage these same machine learning models to imbue intelligence into drones or other applications.

The greater part of the modern GNSS receiver are able to guarantee a fair positioning performance almost
everywhere. The aim is to investigate the effective potentialities of GNSS sensor such as GPS, GLONASS and
to make a statistical analysis of these receivers. The continuous increase of the number of GNSS multiconstellation
station will give a good opportunity to improve accuracy and precision levels. The system is
based on sensors, Arm cortex, and personal computer. Positioning data which includes both longitude and
latitude is extracted using NMEA protocol of the receiver. The extracted data will be displayed and saved on
personal computer and retrieved later. Each receiver sensor is analyzed, statistically characterized and its
error probabilities are obtained.

This is the GPS based vehicle accident detection and security system. A GPS receiver must be receive
the signal of satellites to calculate a position (latitude and longitude) and send the data to Micro controller.
All function is done by Micro controller. MCU read the information of GPS Modem and display on LCD. In
the vehicle, has different sensor’s like, Fire Detection, CNG gas Leakage, Smoke detector or vibration
sensor etc. When any sensor detected in vehicle, MCU send location and sensor status VIA SMS to user.
In this project PIC microcontroller is used for interfacing to various hardware peripherals. The current
design is an embedded application, which will continuously monitor a moving Vehicle and report the status
of the Vehicle on demand. For doing so an PIC16Fxxx microcontroller is interfaced serially to a GSM
Modem and GPS Receiver. A GSM modem is used to send the position (Latitude and Longitude) of the
vehicle from a remote place. The GPS modem will continuously give the data i.e. the latitude and
longitude indicating the position of the vehicle. The GPS modem gives many parameters as the output,
but only the NMEA data coming out is read and displayed on to the LCD. The same data is sent to the
mobile at the other end from where the position of the vehicle is demanded. An MCU Internal EEPROM is
used to store the mobile number

3. Part 1: What is GPS?
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-
based navigation system made up of a network of 24
satellites placed into orbit by the U.S.
The satellites circle the earth 2x a day in a very precise
orbit.
Each satellite transmits a very low radio signal with its
location and unique identifier

Trimble ProXT, SXBlue II, GISMapperTM 7, TomTom,
Magellan Professional MobileMapper

Leica, Nikon, Topcon ($2000 - $25k)
12. Part 2: Types of GPS Units
Recreational Professional
Recreational receivers are
designed to acquire a location
fix quickly without the need for
pinpoint accuracy. Hikers,
bikers, hunters….. Outdoor
enthusiasts, this accuracy is
perfectly adequate, they can
generally find what they are
looking for once they get within
10 meters of it.
Professional GIS users typically
require very accurate placement
of features, often within a meter
or better, so that data layers can
be overlaid and intricate spatial
relationships determined.
13. Part 2: Types of GPS Units
Recreational Professional
Many are capable of real-time
differential correction, but DO
NOT have the ability to post
process.
Even with the strongest, most
accurate differential correction
signal, recreational receivers are
simply not built to achieve
submeter accuracy
Higher specifications on both
hardware and software in the
receiver.
Ability for both real-time
differential correction, and post
processing
14. Part 2: Types of GPS Units
With the increasing pressure to do more with less, the
lower price of a recreational receiver is significant,
however the inability for a ‘rec’ receiver to do the job,
outweighs the initial savings.
Able to download data
Programmable for your use
15. Part 2: Types of GPS Units
To reliably achieve the submeter level of accuracy is
the professional GPS positioning is required.
16. Contributing factors
GPS quality control
Electromagnetic shielding
Antenna technology
Part 3: GPS Errors
17. Part 3: GPS Errors
Professional GPS units give users control over the
quality of the position points that are collected.
Through a simple interface, the user can establish
specific thresholds for acceptable data quality.
These quality control settings essentially allow the user
to filter out any poor data that may degrade the overall
quality of the location coordinates, resulting in greater
accuracy in the final dataset.
GPS Control
18. Part 3: GPS Errors
By their very nature, GPS signals are extremely weak
and are easily degraded by interference from nearby
electrical devices such as laptop computers. High end
GPS products are designed with advanced shielding
technology that MINIMIZES the affects of stray
electromagnetic signals from other equipment.
Electromagnetic Shielding
20. Part 3: GPS Errors
Acquisition of quality GPS signals requires a well-
tuned antenna. The antenna provided with
professional grade units are designed to allow poor
quality signals to be distinguished from high quality
signals.
When receiving transmissions in built-up urban
environments and under tree canopy, there is
degradation of accuracy due to multipath signals.
Antenna Technology
22. Part 3: GPS Errors
GPS signals have been degraded by being reflected
from buildings and other overhead features on the way
to the receiver.
While the antennas on professional receivers are
designed to recognize and filter out multipath signals,
many ‘rec’ receivers have no multipath mitigation at
all.
Antenna Technology, con’t
23. Part 3: GPS Errors
This means that some ‘rec’ receivers appear to track
better than pro-grade receivers in difficult
environments, however, the positions derived from
these measurements may be so badly affected by the
multipath that relying on them is potentially worse
than having no position at all.
Antenna Technology, con’t
24. Part 3: GPS Errors
Recreational units will typically collect all data, but
this ‘productivity’ can come at the expense of accuracy.
And data from a ‘rec’ unit contains insufficient
information to enable postprocessing.
26. Part 4: Field Observations Tim
REMEMBER……WHEN GPS’ING TO THINK ABOUT THE
POTENTIAL OBSTRUCTIONS AROUND YOU
27. Part 1: WHAT IS GIS?
GIS = Geographical Information Systems
Hardware, software and data for capturing, managing,
analyzing and displaying all forms of geographically
referenced information
