In 1962, Jurgen Habermas published his theory of the public sphere as a way to ensure a functioning
democratic society. His theory operates under the assumption that it is possible for people to engage in
discourse while bracketing status differentials and to deliberate as if they were social equals. However,
Habermas idea of the public sphere was greatly rooted in the history of bourgeois society specifically.

disorder. Using evidence from the play, discuss how Racine s Phedre reinforces the stereotype of
woman as a destructive force in nature, known as a femme fatale.
Phedre
The play, Phedre, by Jean Racine presents the attitude of men toward women in the Age of Reason
and political Absolutism. Political Absolutism, is a state which is governed by a ruling class namely a
monarch with complete authority; however, Age of Reason is often depicted by rationalism within
religion, society, philosophy and not by reason. The logic for men often represents logic, order, and
strength. However, women constitute the emotions of weakness and disorder which is a negative
connotation for women which existed in the Age of Reason and political Absolutism. Jean succeeds in
building her play based on the stereotype of woman as a destructive force in nature, known as a
femme fatale. Mainly, Racine uses quasi thinking in influencing her characters such as Theseus and
Hippolytus who represent logic and order, and Phedre, the main character, which is driven by

Now, I will discuss the strength of Marx s argument for why the formation of unions is not a strong
enough solution to the problem of the bourgeoisie s exploitation of the proletariat. I agree with Marx

Today, the world is not doing as well as people would like: gender equality has yet to be achieved,
climate change is putting millions at risk, two hundred million people are unemployed, and people are
more stressed than ever. Trying to solve these world challenges, people are working more and more
hours, yet little progress is being made. The solution is rather simple: work less.
Women around the world are under represented in the workforce, making up less than 20% of CEO
positions, and, in America, fewer than 20% of Congressional positions are filled by women. Reasons
for this lack of representation may be due to prejudice, but it is important to recognize that women are
viewed as the primary child caregiver in most families. For this reason, many women take off work
for several months after childbirth and are often thwarted from higher positions because they take
leave. If both males and females had shorter work weeks, then both genders would be able to devote
more time to child care, allowing women to continue to work sooner and progress in their fields. In
addition, studies have shown that men who take paternity leave are more devoted to their families and
are 50% more likely to help their wives with domestic labor, such as cooking, cleaning, and laundry.
Thus, the shorter work week would lead to both equal representation in the work place and at home,
subsequently, breaking the barriers of gender inequality.
