Gatwick Improvements
Gatwick has very well established rail services, with excellent links to central London including a
frequent Thames link service through the capital and on to St Albans, Luton and Bedford. It also
enjoys reasonable links to the south coast, although services to the Coastway routes west and east of
Brighton are limited at peak periods as many trains don't stop at Gatwick due to train capacity issues
and/or pathing problems. There is also an hourly service to Guildford and Reading, although this is
not very competitive with road because of its low frequency and slow journey times. Improvements
are on the way. New trains are on order for the Gatwick Express, with two trains an hour to be
extended to Brighton. A new fleet is also on its way as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This extension was discussed for years, and can be one of the projects received more attention from
potential improvements and gains on the ground that it would create. Its construction began in 1990
and was completed in 1999, at a cost of £ 3.5 billion. Hussein, & Hunt, (2007) presented a series of
recommendations for future ferrous projects in London. Transport for London, Metropolitan
transportation Authority, hired two independent studies revise and empirically identify the rise in
land values attributable to the extending line Jubilee to have more information to develop funding
policy for the new generation railway projects. Öhrström, Andersson, & Ängerheim, (2007) found it
very difficult to use capital gains to finance these projects. The first study concluded that it is
impossible to estimate the additional values soil generated from the information available.
Sergienko, & Bukharov, (2014) also found that highly uncertain, and that the benefits of gains in the
area Canary Wharf (the area which benefited from extension) could be between £ 300 million and £

estimated that the gains for the Canary Wharf would be around £ 40

Universal Axle Counter for Railyway Signalling
UNIVERSAL AXLE COUNTER SYTEM 1.0 INTRODUCTION : 1. The track circuits are
considered as the vital component of signaling system to achieve safety of train operations. Various
Accident Enquiry Committees have recommended to bring more and more tracks under track
circuiting to safeguard against reception of trains on occupied lines. The track circuiting could not
achieved desired progress die to virtual scarcity of wooden sleepers, prohibitive costs and
environmental consciousness in the country and the world at large. Availability of concrete sleepers
have solved the problem to some extent but track circuiting on loop lines, points and crossings still
suffers for want of adequate supply and insertion of concrete sleepers. 2. Axle ... Show more content

description of Each unit:– i) Track mounting and track side equipment : Track mounting equipment
consists of a pair of transmitter and receiver coils housed in specially designed housings which are
fixed to flange of a rail section by means of suitable rail clamps using bolts and nuts. Each detection
point has two sets of such track devices mounted on same rail with a fixed stagger between them.
The two transmitter coils of a detection point are connected in series to 5khz oscillator housed in
electronic junction box which is installed in a location box by the side of the track. The output of
two receiver coils of a detection point serve as inputs to two receiver amplifiers housed in the same
electronic junction box through cables which are part of the track mounting equipment. Electronic
junction box is powered by 24V DC Supply. ii) Transmission media between track side equipment

Did Milo Want A Life Of Subservient Husbandry Like His...
Did Milo want a life of subservient husbandry like his father and generations of Guillets? His father
would leave him with no significant inheritance, even though he was the eldest boy. His lack of
secondary schooling and his French Catholic ancestry, despite being only partial, placed him on the
wrong side of the two solitudes to improve his life. To be a landowner meant independence. His
childhood, not only marred by poverty but also by the traumatic series of deaths of those so close to
him, conceivably placed a pall over his future – that 's if he did not do something radical. (There is
an unsubstantiated rumour that he "had a falling out" with his family, possibly from his second step–
mother, and not his father as Milo honoured his father by naming a son after him.) For whatever
reason, and it seems he had a few, Milo left Quebec likely either in the fall of 1881 or spring of 1882
at the age of 15 (he thought 14) and headed to Ontario. If he had left just a bit later he would have
had to endure another significant death, that of his younger brother Joseph. Ephraim Heald

aged only 13 and had just started out on his own. Milo chose at first Washago, a small community of
farmers in the town on the north end of Lake Couchiching by the Severn River. Of course he had to
expect to start work as a farm hand but he likely felt a bit more equality and the chance of true
independence.

Analysis Of'sleepless On Seattle, The Communication...
In applying the above theories to the movie Sleepless in Seattle, the communication privacy
management theory appears several times throughout the film. Annie has two contrasting
experiences with privacy boundaries. Annie is engaged Walter, a wonderfully kind and gentle man,
who absolutely adores her, but has an obvious character flaw with his constant talk of allergies.
Annie gives the impression that she is incredibly happy with Walter when in reality she is quite
bored with him. While Annie loves Walter's tenderness, she can't disclose her deep dark secrets with
him, especially her doubts about their engagement and feelings of she's just settling for what's good
for her and not the "magic" that Sam describes during his radio interview. She cannot stop thinking
of Sam and Jonah after listening in on a talk–show radio broadcast as she's driving one evening.
Sam's words are constantly on Annie's mind and she begins to wonder if Sam is possibly her soul
mate. With Walter she has a thick, impenetrable wall that is holding in her deep secrets. At one
point, she hides in a closet one night while Walter is sleeping so she can listen to Sam speaking on
the radio. When Walter catches her in the closet, she lies to him instead of confessing her
apprehensions and obsession. Throughout the entire film, she struggles with herself for withholding
this important information from Walter, but she has total ownership of that private information and
does not feel the need to

The Dynamic Response Of Bridges
Research efforts in the area of studying the dynamic response of bridges subjected to moving
vehicles experienced two distinguished phases. The application of digital computers can be
considered as the separation limit of these two phases. Before the application of computers, methods
were analytical, simplified or approximate in order to analyze simple and fundamental problems. As
the simplified analysis of the early research efforts is not applicable in the analysis of complex
Train–Track–Bridge Interaction (TTBI) problems, this literature review will be focusing mostly on
the relatively recent research. 2.2 Bridge Modeling Various types of bridge modeling have been
adopted in the study of the Train–Track–Bridge dynamics. The selection of the model depends on
the analysis procedure and intended goals. Some of the most important models are summarized
below. Early studies on the TTBI Interaction analysis utilized the continuum models represented by
Euler–Bernoulli beam equation. These models were used mostly for the simple span bridges with
limited cross–sectional variety. The advantage of these models, in addition to its simplicity, is the
ability to obtain a closed–form solution. This model is still attractive for researchers who intend to
study the Vehicle–Bridge Interaction theoretically with closed–form equations (Biondi et al., 2005).
Euler–Bernoulli beam has some simplifications which may not be acceptable in some cases;
therefore, other models such as Timoshenko

Suspense In W. F. Harvey's August Heat?
What to Expect When You're Not Expecting
What is suspense? Percy D'Aco says, "Suspense is the uncertainty or anxiety you feel about what
will happen next." It can be built up by several ways; foreshadowing, withholding information,
having the main character choose between two dangerous decisions in order to have action, and a
reversal in the characters situation. For instance, something convenient could happen and then it
goes south or vise versa. But how does suspense tie in with W.F. Harvey's
August Heat? Harvey uses the four different methods to create suspense in his writing to make his
work more appealing to the reader and reel them in to find out what's going to happen next.
Harvey introduces the date August 20th 190– then his main character, ... Show more content on

This is where James thinks it is some kind of joke and confronts the man asking if they've ever met

James introduces himself and says that everything on the stone was correct except the death and
then proceeds to show Atkinson his sketch. They talk for a little longer and then Atkinson asks
where he lives and James responds saying he is an hour walk away. Atkinson explains how many
things could happen and he could get run over or trip over a banana peel so he invites James to stay

In today's society, it is evident individual's needs, wants, and behavior have quickly adapted and
evolved over the years, but so have business organizations. What once started in 1922, as a simple
creation to fulfill John A. Macdonald's promise to unite the new country of Canada by building a
transcontinental railway, has now transformed into what is recognized as the Canadian National
Railway Corporation, with a market cap of $55.9 billion just over 100 years later (Forbes). It is
important to understand CNR's key to success is based on several factors such as; maintaining and

Compare And Contrast North Korea And South Korea
Compare and Contrast: North Korea and South Korea Ever wondered why there's North Korea and
South Korea? The nation of Korea was once unified for centuries under the Joseon Dynasty (1392–
1910). The Japanese invaded Korea and ruled over the nation for 35 years–thus, during the World
War II as well. Consequently, the World War II ended after Japan surrendered to the United States,
which also led Japan to give up Korea. The United Nations ordered Korea to be temporarily
demarcated into two parts through the 38th parallel–the Soviet Union controlled the northern part
and the United States controlled the southern part. The United Nations scheduled elections and
stated that both parties were to be fair and democratic. The Soviet Union refused the idea of having
democratic elections and anointed Kim Il–Sung as North Korea's communist ruler in contrary with
South Korea which democratically elected Syngman Rhee as its leader. That explains why there's
North Korea and South Korea. The nation's split made a bombarding impact in the development of
its environment, economy, people, and culture. North Korea's capital city is Pyongyang wherein a
variety of infrastructures such as buildings, houses, and railway systems can be located. Only the
privileged and wealthy people reside in this city. The established buildings are old–fashioned and
are dominantly composed of concrete walls. Traditional houses such as Hanoks which is made of
wood and straw are evident as people's homes. The

The news of this new mining town spread like wildfire and before long several mining prospectors
moved into the area. After the discovery over 40 different mines operated in the surrounding area for
the next 75 years. By 1882 the once small mining camp became big enough for the United State

Battle Of Amiens Essay
The Battle of Amiens, also known as the Third Battle of Picardy, spanned from the 8th of August to
the 12th of August. The Battle of Amiens was a counter–offensive against the Germans' Operation

The Battle of Amiens was inadvertently instigated by the Germans when they incurred the wrath of
the Allies by declaring an operation known as Operation Michael. Operation Michael was basically
a series of "jabs" to the Western front to force them to move backwards. Operation Michael also
intended to annihilate the right wing of the BEF. This plan became even easier to execute once the
Germans realized that, under the Treaty of Brest–Litovsk with the Russians, they could transfer
myriads of men to the Western Front, which would give them an advantage in "man power" and

Government bonds were issued on a per mile for each twenty–mile section of track completed. For
the plateau between the Rocky and Sierra Nevada Mountains the amount per mile was about
$32,000 per mile and for the mountain regions, $48,000. All plain, flat lands were priced at $16,000
per mile (Klein) (Gordon 217). It was very difficult to raise the needed capital as the majority of
people in the east viewed the west as, "remote as the moon, its terrain alien and forbidding" (Klein).
The pioneers of these projects knew it would take an immense amount of resources. It was very
clear to both the railroad companies and the government, there would not be profit for the
construction of the railroad, only after it is finished. The debt from these bonds had to be paid back,
and the only way to do so was through private investment. The appendix of this paper shows a news

Theme Of Anna Karenina
The context of the next significant death in the novel decidedly contrasts the death of Nicholas
Levin. Anna Karenina, after falling from grace and her elevated social stratum, desperately searches
for meaning in her life. She fears that she no longer provides Count Vronsky with any sort of
pleasure and constantly seeks to improve herself in order to keep his attention and love focused on
her. In a constant state of inadequacy, Anna cannot even sleep without a heavy dose of opium. Anna
grows dependent upon the drug, and one night, "She poured out her usual dose of opium and
thought that she need only drink the whole phial in order to die, it seemed to her so easy and simple
that she began thinking with pleasure of how he would suffer, repent, and love her memory when it
was too late" (Tolstoy 680). Tolstoy foreshadows Anna's demise in this passage. Anna feels that,
were she to kill herself, she could finally solicit the attention and love she craves so adamantly.
However, on further considering this avenue, "All was darkness. 'Death!' she thought. And such
terror came upon her" (Tolstoy 680). She quickly dismisses this thought, desiring to live her life
fully. However, the seeds of something horrible are planted in her mind. Those seeds sprout as Anna

History Of Jim Crow Laws
To deprive blacks of their rights, state legislatures wrote a series of laws designed to enforce
segregation. These laws were called Jim Crow Laws , named after a minstrel song. These laws were
passed in Tennessee in 1881. The first of the laws required separate railway cars for the blacks and
whites. The Supreme Court ruling Plessy v. Ferguson that separate public buildings for whites and
blacks encouraged the passage of discrimination laws that wiped out the wealth made by blacks
during Reconstruction. Railways and streetcars, public waiting rooms, restaurants, boarding houses,
theaters, and public parks, schools, hospitals, and other public buildings were all segregated , and
they were designated for blacks. It was not until after World

Essay about The Industrial Revolution Heavily Influenced...
The Industrial Revolution Heavily Influenced England by 1914
Industrial Revolution could be argued to be "the most fundamental transformation of human life in
the history of world."[i] Furthermore, the definition of the industrial revolution is as abstract as what
had enabled it to happen. A French economist, Jerome–Adolphe Blanqui, first used the term
industrial revolution in 1837, when he claimed that the social and economical change in Britain is
parallel to the French revolution of 1789, in the manner of the speed and impact. His view was later
criticised by Sir John Clapham, who argued that the process of industrialisation in Britain at the time
took a more evolutionary line, and that there ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Up to 70% of the population was working in industrialised towns, an estimated number of 44% were
working in factories, the number of agricultural workers declined by 36% from it's figure in 1841
and there was the emergence of the importance of entrepreneurial skills to manage the factories.
There was also a shift in political power with the emergence of the Labour Party in 1897 and the
declining powers of the aristocrats, including the monarchy. The change in living standards
generally improved by the passing of the 1850s factory acts[4]. However, the society might have not
been fully industrialised, as the advantages brought by the "revolution" didn't benefit all tiers of the
society, and to an extent didn't alter the lives of many. People brought up in apprentice houses[5]
generally didn't see improvement to their lives, despite the introduction of factory acts and endless
hours of child labour was not uncommon, despite of the education act of 1870[6]. Recent

Divergent Reflection
The book "Divergent" was a novel by Veronica Roth. The book falls into the categories of realistic
fiction and scientific fiction. The setting of the book is set in a futuristic society in Chicago where it
is divided into five factions. They are Abnegation, Dauntless, Erudite, Candor, and Amity. The story
of "Divergent" is told by first person since the narrator, Beatrice is explaining the story from her
own perspective. Identity is the main theme throughout the book. In addition, a person doesn't have
to be labeled as one thing, they can have multiple traits. Finding out your relationship with people
and figuring out where you fit in plays a big part to the theme of the story. Two of the major
characters in the book are Beatrice Prior (Tris) and Tobias Eaton (Four). Beatrice is a Dauntless
transfer from Abnegation where her family had been. Later on, throughout the story, Tris learns that
she is a Divergent. A Divergent is when someone has all traits from all five factions. When it comes
to physical appearance, she has blue eyes and blonde hair. Beatrice can be described as brave,
curious, unique, and intelligent. Tobias is also from Dauntless but is also a Divergent. Four lead,
train, and initiate the members of Dauntless. Tobias can be described as fearless and can be guarded.
Other minor characters in the book are Andrew Prior, Natalie Prior, Cristina, Will, and Jeanine
Matthews. Andrew is the father of Beatrice who is an Erudite–born but was

The Industrial Revolution started advancing in the mid–18th century after many sought new and
more efficient methods of production to accomplish the needs of society . The Industrial Revolution
brought with it an array of changes: an increase in population, the rise of new building typologies,
redistributions of wealth and fluctuations of living conditions. The Industrial Revolution broke out
in England with most of the important technological innovations being British ; with the application
of reliable steam power to enhance productivity in machinery this fueled the ability to transport

Industrialism started exhibiting signs of affecting the visual landscape as seen in Philip James de
Loutherbourg, 'Coalbrookdale By Night', foreshadowing a new architectural response. The urban
landscape became a darkscape; new building types such as The Mill and The Factory can be seen
with regular windows, smoke stacks that blackened the skies and a strict geometry of cubic masses
that were in stark contrast to the natural surrounding, creating a visual gravity of shifting hierarchy
in the city. All did not accept these new building types, in 1829 K. F. Schinkel traveled across
Britain visiting major industrial centers starting from London and working through Birmingham,
Dudley, Manchester and Liverpool . Schinkel recorded his architectural encounters in notes,
sketches and personal letters documenting his observations of factories and the new methods of
production; in particular Schinkel recorded his personal encounters with health and the life of the
people around him . Schinkel concluded that the architect as an artist does not control the factories

Bridges And Their Types Bridges Essay
BRIDGES AND THEIR TYPES
Highway Bridges
Bridges are an essential part of the transport infrastructure.
General Information:
A bridge is a means by which a road, railway or other service is carried over an obstacle such as a
river, valley, and other road or railway line, either with no intermediate support or with only a
limited number of supports at convenient locations. Fig: Docklands Light Rail Bridge, London,
England.
Basic features of bridges:
Superstructure
`The superstructure of a bridge is the part directly responsible for carrying the road or other service.
Its layout is determined largely by the disposition of the service to be carried. In most cases, there is
a deck structure that carries the loads from the individual wheels and distributes the loads to the
principal structural elements, such as beams spanning between the substructure supports.
Road bridges carry a number of traffic lanes, in one or two directions, and may also carry footways.
At the edge of the bridge, parapets are provided for the protection of vehicles and people.
Rail bridges typically carry two tracks, laid on ballast, although separate superstructures are often
provided for each track. They are narrow (about 2m wide) and are usually single span structures that
rarely span more than 40m.
Substructure:
The substructure of a bridge is responsible for supporting the superstructure and carrying the loads
to the ground through foundations. To support the superstructure, single span bridges

The Impact of the British Empire's Rule on India
Introduction In this essay I will be discussing the impact that the rule of the British Empire had on
India's development as a nation. I will be looking at how British imperial rule both benefitted and
hindered the growth of India economically, socially, and culturally. To do this I will be looking at the
beginning of the British Empire's involvement in India, right up until India gained its independence
from Britain on the 15th of August 1947. The purpose of this essay is to examine the long lasting
effects of the British Empire on the Indian nation. India, like all colonies, was affected in many
ways by the age of imperialism, and those effects are still evident today. The essay will look at both
sides of the argument, allowing for positive and negative effects before finally concluding with a
summary and re iteration of the points and arguments made throughout the essay. The essay will
avoid taking sides, but rather the aim is to merely give an account of the positive and negative
effects of British imperialism in India. The essay as previously mentioned will focus on the
economic, cultural, and social effects.
Historical Context and Background
British involvement on the Indian subcontinent began early in the 17th Century through the British
East India Company and its business ventures and dealings. The early British Empire was composed
of several self governing colonies which

Industrial Revolution: The Role Of Transportation In England
Point 1– Transportation
Prior to the Industrial Revolution, transportation in England was rudimentary. People and goods
were moved using river barges however; this was a time–consuming and costly exercise. Roads
were poorly built and rarely maintained. The railway network was nonexistent, and this limited
transportation to wooden tracks and carriages pulled by horses. Technological advancements in the
textile and iron industries caused the production of goods to become faster and cheaper. With
advances in steam engine technology, numerous industries were led to adopt machinery that
supported their production process. Through an intensified demand for goods, a revolution in the
transportation industry commenced. Bodies of trustees now maintained roads, tolls were introduced,
canals were built allowing sizeable barges to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The early roads in England were difficult to navigate, badly pot–holed and without signposting.
However, in the 1750's the Turnpike trusts emerged. The Turnpike trusts were groups of people who
maintained the roads regularly. Roads were straightened and made flatter and harder, tolls were also
introduced. England has many rivers and waterways. However, as rivers weren't easy to navigate
and didn't always stream to the areas where goods were required, canals (man–made waterways)
were introduced. Francis Egerton (the Duke of Bridgewater) launched England's first real canal in
1761, which ran from Worsley to Manchester. Canals caused transportation to become more reliable,
economic, smooth and fast. Railways eventually overtook roads and canals. Early English railways
were constructed with carriages pulled by horses and wooden tracks connecting coalmines to rivers
and canals. However, as technology advanced, Richard Trevithick built the first steam engine
locomotive in 1804. This train ran on smooth metal rails and was the fastest transport to this date.
Due to this, railways rapidly became both a predominant and

The Rise Of The States : Evolution Of American State...
This book, "The Rise of the States: Evolution of American State Government," by Jon Teaford, is
his explanation of how the states have changed positively and negatively throughout the years. Each
state has control over their citizens living in the state differently. Teaford addresses these issues in
the form of his own discussion and explanations. Teaford begins with a background of the United
States and different series of events that unfolded from the mistreatment of the national government
to it's citizens. I enjoyed the quote by Roscoe Drummond, "Our federal system of states no longer
exists and has no more chance of being brought back into existence than an apple pie can be put
back on the apple tree." This is a great explanation of how the national government has changed
vastly within history.
Teaford writes, "State government and the study of state level leaders and policies had thus become
respectable." Like I stated before, the national government was beginning to fall based upon the
quotes listed at the beginning of the book from multiple people working for the government. This
quote then explains how the state governments changed from within and spread outward. Like stated
after this quote, putrefying state rule returned to life and political scientists were making up for past
neglect. Our newer political scientists were reconstructing the bad image that our past historians left
for our national government. Teaford also explains how the

Technological Innovations During World War One
How Significant were Technological Innovations during World War One? World War One brought a
completely new form of warfare. Gone were the old ways of cavalry and slow firing bolt–action
rifles. The war symbolised a change in the way we understand and fight wars. Leon Trotsky said that
'War is the locomotive of history'. This was certainly true. The war was a catalyst for change. I am
going to highlight three areas in which technological innovations made an impact – the development
of submarines, the use of gas and the building of railways. I have chosen these three examples to
demonstrate the different ways in which technological innovations affected the course of World War
One. Gas had a huge psychological impact on the soldiers; submarines had a great economic impact,
and the railways allowed the war to be fought on a vast scale never seen before. Significance can be
understood in many different ways. I am going to understand significance by establishing criteria
that will measure significance. These are – tactical, military, psychological, economic and social
significances. I believe that the most important measure of significance in World War One is the
social significance because in this war of attrition numbers killed was of great importance. The
technological innovation of the submarine was most significant from an economic perspective
because it was crucial in stopping the flow of supplies across the sea. The submarines' impact was
felt both during the war, but

The Chrysalids Character Analysis
"We don't have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in the process of change. Small acts,
when multiplied by millions of people, can change the world"
(Hord Zinn). David is a telepathic boy living in a post apocalyptic nuclear wasteland, called the
"Tribulation" in the book The Chrysalids. David manages to change the world and the vision of
mutation and deviants. David would have never able to do that without the people around that
changed him. This Essay will explore how Sophie, Uncle Axel and Gordon though minor characters
have a major impact on David's development.
Throughout the book Sophie had an exponential effect on David development even when not
present. Firstly, when David meets meets Sophie and learns about Sophie's supplementary toe,
David accepts Sophie for who she is. " It was all twisted and puffy – I didn't even notice then that it
had more than the usual amount of toes..." (Wyndham 9). This is critical to David's development as
it influenced him to ignore the rules of the uneducated town of Waknuk. Secondly, when Sophie is a
suspected deviant David helps her run away to the fringes evading the law. "I managed to find some
candles and light them, and when I had blown up the fire and put some more on, that helped to make
the place seem less lonely." (49). In this quote David is trying to make the house seem occupied so
the people of Waknuk do not get suspicious. This is imperative as for the first time in his life David

Theme Of Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close
We always hear about communication and language as a theme but we do not think about how the
lack of communication can affect characterization and connections. In the novel, Extremely Loud &
Incredibly Close, Jonathan Safran Foer displays just that. He also shows how communication is
important in everyday life. In the novel, many relationships are made and damaged due to how
people communicate and how they decide to deal with their obstacles. All the major characters,
along with few minor characters, have to face troubles that test their relationship with not only the
other characters in the story but within themselves.
The first hint towards the theme occurs when Oskar goes to the art store and talks to the manager.
She tells him very few details about the man who came in and wrote "Thomas Schell" on all the
pieces of paper. Had she been able to reveal more about physical description, he would not think it
was his dad, although he would still wonder why someone wrote his father's name. Thomas Schell
Sr. finds everyday conversations difficult and tedious so it is no surprise that the manager did not
have any socialization with him.
By Thomas Sr. being non–verbal, it is showing his long lasting emotional pain – "I have not always
been silent, I used to talk and talk and talk and talk, I could not keep my mouth shut, the silence
overtook me like a cancer". When he does express what he needs to say towards Grandma, Foer's
audience can tell Thomas is not as emotionally open

Essay on The Development of Trade Unions for the Unskilled
The Development of Trade Unions for the Unskilled The 'new model unions' were for the skilled
workers and only covered a small section of the working class which meant a great mass of
unskilled and semi–skilled workers remained largely unorganised this was with exceptions of the
Miners' National Union and the Agricultural Labourers' Union. During the 1880s the unskilled
workers were organised into what is called 'new unionism'. These new unions' main features were
that they charged minimal subscriptions and adopted a much more militant stance towards the
employers; this meant that the unions were prepared to use the strike weapon to gain their

The revival of socialism was also important to the development of trade unions for the unskilled as a
number of individual socialists inspired a number of the strikes which took place during the 1880s.
The successful strikes which took place in 1888–9 saw the turning point for the unskilled and semi–
skilled workers. In 1888 Annie Besant investigated the working conditions of female labour at
Bryant and May's factory in East London. Here she found low wages, girls suffering from
phosphorus poisoning and a harsh regime of rules and regulations. Mrs Besant organised The
Match–Makers Unions which came out on strike and eventually the girls won an increase in wages
and some of the rules were relaxed. This successful strike encouraged other unions to take on their
employers. In 1889 Will Thorne , a member of the Social Democratic Federation, assisted by
Eleanor Marx, formed the Gas workers' and General Labourers' Union. Thorne organised a strike at
the Becton Gas–works and demanded a change from two 12–hour shifts to three 8 hour shifts. The
employers agreed to the demand and an increase in wages. The summer of 1889 however saw the
greatest struggle. In London's dockland the dockers were being badly paid and demoralised until
Ben Tillett organised them into making a number of demands of the employers. Tillett prepared for a
long strike and was joined by

India 's Economic Impact On India Essay
As previously stated, Britain's economic interest in India had begun in the 1600's when the British
East India Company set up trading posts in several Indian cities such as Madras, Bombay, and
Calcutta (Age of Imperialism 2012). At first, the Mughal dynasty which ruled India at the time, had
kept European traders under control. But by 1707, the Mughal dynasty had begun to collapse and
many small states began to break away from under the control of the Mughal dynasty. In 1757,
Robert Clive led the East India Company troops to a swift and decisive victory over Indian defence
forces along with the French at the Battle of Plassey. From then on, the British East India Company
was the leading power in India (Age of Imperialism 2012).
Throughout the 18th and 19th century, many events have taken place in the world. One of these
events was the industrial revolution starting in England and then eventually spreading to other
countries in Europe (Chauhan 1989: 109). This economic impact affected India because of how an
English man by the name of Thomas Stevens managed to motivate four of London's traders to travel
to India. The industrial revolution allowed for Britain to obtain the raw materials for its monopoly of
factories that they were in need of as well as a location to sell their valuable goods. What occurred
after was a struggle of power in 18th century India. The Mughal empire was declining in forces
which gave the British the power to take full control due to their large

Essay about The Death Railway of World War II
Abstract
The saying of, "Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it" is one that deserves more focus.
One might ask, "Why?" The answer is the fact that countless events in history have been overlooked
and forgotten. Such is the case of the Thai– Burma Railway also known as the "Death Railway", a
line between Bang Pong and Thanbyuzayat. This, in and of itself is a tragedy. The inhuman
conditions of thousands of POW's as they labored in the Thai–Burma jungle during World War II is
something that should never be forgotten. Those who survived and those who did not deserve
commendation for their strength, and reverence as heroes. Thus, why does no one know their story,
their suffering, and their past? This past, this history, needs to ... Show more content on

What was to be done with them? In the eyes of the Japanese, they were a disgrace to mankind. A
Japanese man would rather die than be humiliated with the charge of giving up. They were taught to
never surrender and fight until death for their Emperor (Lee, 1998).
This concept baffled the Japanese. The idea of prisoners had not occurred to them. These men were
dishonorable, and the thought of feeding and taking care of the dishonorable repulsed the Japanese
(Pitt & Mason, 1993). For a while, the issue was not dealt with, and the POW's were left alone.
Unfortunately, that was not to be their permanent state of being. Soon, an "inspiration" gave light to
the issue. The Japanese discovered they held in their hands a free work force. In these dishonorable
men, lay the path to accomplishing the new goals being set for a nation at war (La Forte & Marcello,
1993).
The Death Railway was one of these "new goals". Its intent was to join two pre–existing railroads;
one, running from Singapore to Ban Pong and Bangkok, the other from Ye on the Andaman coast to
Rangoon. The plan was to unite these two railroads by building a line from Ban Pong to
Thanbyuzayat, a small village 50 miles north of Ye (La Forte & Marcello, 1993).
The Railway had three major purposes and desirable attributes for Japan. First, the Railway was to
provide supplies and reinforcements as Japan was fighting the British in northern Burma at the time.

Offender Profiling
Offender profiling, or criminal profiling, is an investigative tool used by law enforcement agencies.
It is used when a perpetrator(s) is unknown and traditional physical methods (such as DNA sample
to cross match) are either unavailable or are insufficient in identifying a suspect. It involves the
analysis of a crime scene(s) and other data in order to create a profile of the type of person a
criminal may be. The 'clues' given in a profiling case are drawn from the type of crime or attack, the
location of choice, and in the case of murder – the choice of victim(s). As well as the deductions
made using physical and psychological clues, it also utilises a combination of appraisal and
statistics. The comparison to similar offences is also used, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Both types of offender profiling represent attempts to deduce the characteristics of an offender(s) by
analysing the specific characteristics of their offence(s). Both can be used as an appendage to
traditional police work in order to link crimes, narrow the potential field of suspects, focus their
investigation. That being said, there are some quite significant differences in their application and
the types of data they are likely to ascertain about an offender.
Geographical works under the assumption that crime has no random distribution (Canter, 2000).
Geographical profiling attempts to predict information regarding offenders by analysing the location
and timing of offences. It can be used to establish if a number of offences may or may not have been
undertaken by the same offender. In the cases that are linked, they can predict characteristics of an
offender; this include where they may be likely to live and if they may be knowledgeable about a
particular area. In doing this, police are able to focus their resources to a general area which is more
efficient, and helps to prioritise suspects. Geographical profiling helps officers to understand the

Gatwick Improvements

  • 1. Gatwick Improvements Gatwick has very well established rail services, with excellent links to central London including a frequent Thames link service through the capital and on to St Albans, Luton and Bedford. It also enjoys reasonable links to the south coast, although services to the Coastway routes west and east of Brighton are limited at peak periods as many trains don't stop at Gatwick due to train capacity issues and/or pathing problems. There is also an hourly service to Guildford and Reading, although this is not very competitive with road because of its low frequency and slow journey times. Improvements are on the way. New trains are on order for the Gatwick Express, with two trains an hour to be extended to Brighton. A new fleet is also on its way as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This extension was discussed for years, and can be one of the projects received more attention from potential improvements and gains on the ground that it would create. Its construction began in 1990 and was completed in 1999, at a cost of £ 3.5 billion. Hussein, & Hunt, (2007) presented a series of recommendations for future ferrous projects in London. Transport for London, Metropolitan transportation Authority, hired two independent studies revise and empirically identify the rise in land values attributable to the extending line Jubilee to have more information to develop funding policy for the new generation railway projects. Öhrström, Andersson, & Ängerheim, (2007) found it very difficult to use capital gains to finance these projects. The first study concluded that it is impossible to estimate the additional values soil generated from the information available. Sergienko, & Bukharov, (2014) also found that highly uncertain, and that the benefits of gains in the area Canary Wharf (the area which benefited from extension) could be between £ 300 million and £ 2.7 billion. A third independent study, under the auspices of the Lincoln Institute for Land Policy, estimated that the gains for the Canary Wharf would be around £ 40 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Universal Axle Counter for Railyway Signalling UNIVERSAL AXLE COUNTER SYTEM 1.0 INTRODUCTION : 1. The track circuits are considered as the vital component of signaling system to achieve safety of train operations. Various Accident Enquiry Committees have recommended to bring more and more tracks under track circuiting to safeguard against reception of trains on occupied lines. The track circuiting could not achieved desired progress die to virtual scarcity of wooden sleepers, prohibitive costs and environmental consciousness in the country and the world at large. Availability of concrete sleepers have solved the problem to some extent but track circuiting on loop lines, points and crossings still suffers for want of adequate supply and insertion of concrete sleepers. 2. • 9. Did Milo Want A Life Of Subservient Husbandry Like His... Did Milo want a life of subservient husbandry like his father and generations of Guillets? His father would leave him with no significant inheritance, even though he was the eldest boy. His lack of secondary schooling and his French Catholic ancestry, despite being only partial, placed him on the wrong side of the two solitudes to improve his life. To be a landowner meant independence. His childhood, not only marred by poverty but also by the traumatic series of deaths of those so close to him, conceivably placed a pall over his future – that 's if he did not do something radical. (There is an unsubstantiated rumour that he "had a falling out" with his family, possibly from his second step– mother, and not his father as Milo honoured his father by naming a son after him.) For whatever reason, and it seems he had a few, Milo left Quebec likely either in the fall of 1881 or spring of 1882 at the age of 15 (he thought 14) and headed to Ontario. If he had left just a bit later he would have had to endure another significant death, that of his younger brother Joseph. Ephraim Heald Patch Jonpatch.ca Rebecca Mann Turner Jonpatch.ca He died of unknown causes August 6, 1882, aged only 13 and had just started out on his own. Milo chose at first Washago, a small community of farmers in the town on the north end of Lake Couchiching by the Severn River. Of course he had to expect to start work as a farm hand but he likely felt a bit more equality and the chance of true independence. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In applying the above theories to the movie Sleepless in Seattle, the communication privacy management theory appears several times throughout the film. Annie has two contrasting experiences with privacy boundaries. Annie is engaged Walter, a wonderfully kind and gentle man, who absolutely adores her, but has an obvious character flaw with his constant talk of allergies. Annie gives the impression that she is incredibly happy with Walter when in reality she is quite bored with him. While Annie loves Walter's tenderness, she can't disclose her deep dark secrets with him, especially her doubts about their engagement and feelings of she's just settling for what's good for her and not the "magic" that Sam describes during his radio interview. She cannot stop thinking of Sam and Jonah after listening in on a talk–show radio broadcast as she's driving one evening. Sam's words are constantly on Annie's mind and she begins to wonder if Sam is possibly her soul mate. With Walter she has a thick, impenetrable wall that is holding in her deep secrets. At one point, she hides in a closet one night while Walter is sleeping so she can listen to Sam speaking on the radio. When Walter catches her in the closet, she lies to him instead of confessing her apprehensions and obsession. Throughout the entire film, she struggles with herself for withholding this important information from Walter, but she has total ownership of that private information and does not feel the need to ... • 15. The Dynamic Response Of Bridges Research efforts in the area of studying the dynamic response of bridges subjected to moving vehicles experienced two distinguished phases. The application of digital computers can be considered as the separation limit of these two phases. Before the application of computers, methods were analytical, simplified or approximate in order to analyze simple and fundamental problems. As the simplified analysis of the early research efforts is not applicable in the analysis of complex Train–Track–Bridge Interaction (TTBI) problems, this literature review will be focusing mostly on the relatively recent research. 2.2 Bridge Modeling Various types of bridge modeling have been adopted in the study of the Train–Track–Bridge dynamics. The selection of the model depends on the analysis procedure and intended goals. Some of the most important models are summarized below. Early studies on the TTBI Interaction analysis utilized the continuum models represented by Euler–Bernoulli beam equation. These models were used mostly for the simple span bridges with limited cross–sectional variety. The advantage of these models, in addition to its simplicity, is the ability to obtain a closed–form solution. This model is still attractive for researchers who intend to study the Vehicle–Bridge Interaction theoretically with closed–form equations (Biondi et al., 2005). Euler–Bernoulli beam has some simplifications which may not be acceptable in some cases; therefore, other models such as Timoshenko ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Suspense In W. F. Harvey's August Heat? What to Expect When You're Not Expecting What is suspense? Percy D'Aco says, "Suspense is the uncertainty or anxiety you feel about what will happen next." It can be built up by several ways; foreshadowing, withholding information, having the main character choose between two dangerous decisions in order to have action, and a reversal in the characters situation. For instance, something convenient could happen and then it goes south or vise versa. But how does suspense tie in with W.F. Harvey's August Heat? Harvey uses the four different methods to create suspense in his writing to make his work more appealing to the reader and reel them in to find out what's going to happen next. • 28. Compare And Contrast North Korea And South Korea Compare and Contrast: North Korea and South Korea Ever wondered why there's North Korea and South Korea? The nation of Korea was once unified for centuries under the Joseon Dynasty (1392– 1910). The Japanese invaded Korea and ruled over the nation for 35 years–thus, during the World War II as well. Consequently, the World War II ended after Japan surrendered to the United States, which also led Japan to give up Korea. The United Nations ordered Korea to be temporarily demarcated into two parts through the 38th parallel–the Soviet Union controlled the northern part and the United States controlled the southern part. The United Nations scheduled elections and stated that both parties were to be fair and democratic. The Soviet Union refused the idea of having democratic elections and anointed Kim Il–Sung as North Korea's communist ruler in contrary with South Korea which democratically elected Syngman Rhee as its leader. That explains why there's North Korea and South Korea. The nation's split made a bombarding impact in the development of its environment, economy, people, and culture. North Korea's capital city is Pyongyang wherein a variety of infrastructures such as buildings, houses, and railway systems can be located. Only the privileged and wealthy people reside in this city. The established buildings are old–fashioned and are dominantly composed of concrete walls. Traditional houses such as Hanoks which is made of wood and straw are evident as people's homes. The ... • 38. Theme Of Anna Karenina The context of the next significant death in the novel decidedly contrasts the death of Nicholas Levin. Anna Karenina, after falling from grace and her elevated social stratum, desperately searches for meaning in her life. She fears that she no longer provides Count Vronsky with any sort of pleasure and constantly seeks to improve herself in order to keep his attention and love focused on her. In a constant state of inadequacy, Anna cannot even sleep without a heavy dose of opium. Anna grows dependent upon the drug, and one night, "She poured out her usual dose of opium and thought that she need only drink the whole phial in order to die, it seemed to her so easy and simple that she began thinking with pleasure of how he would suffer, repent, and love her memory when it was too late" (Tolstoy 680). Tolstoy foreshadows Anna's demise in this passage. Anna feels that, were she to kill herself, she could finally solicit the attention and love she craves so adamantly. However, on further considering this avenue, "All was darkness. 'Death!' she thought. And such terror came upon her" (Tolstoy 680). She quickly dismisses this thought, desiring to live her life fully. However, the seeds of something horrible are planted in her mind. Those seeds sprout as Anna continues to trudge through her lackluster life. Anna stumbles upon the train tracks, and, "Suddenly remembering the man who had been run over the day she first met Vronsky, she realized what she had to do" (Tolstoy 694). Anna ... The Industrial Revolution Heavily Influenced England by 1914 Industrial Revolution could be argued to be "the most fundamental transformation of human life in the history of world."[i] Furthermore, the definition of the industrial revolution is as abstract as what had enabled it to happen. A French economist, Jerome–Adolphe Blanqui, first used the term industrial revolution in 1837, when he claimed that the social and economical change in Britain is parallel to the French revolution of 1789, in the manner of the speed and impact. His view was later criticised by Sir John Clapham, who argued that the process of industrialisation in Britain at the time took a more evolutionary line, and that there ... There was also a shift in political power with the emergence of the Labour Party in 1897 and the declining powers of the aristocrats, including the monarchy. The change in living standards generally improved by the passing of the 1850s factory acts[4]. However, the society might have not been fully industrialised, as the advantages brought by the "revolution" didn't benefit all tiers of the society, and to an extent didn't alter the lives of many. All did not accept these new building types, in 1829 K. F. • 56. Bridges And Their Types Bridges Essay BRIDGES AND THEIR TYPES Highway Bridges Bridges are an essential part of the transport infrastructure. General Information: A bridge is a means by which a road, railway or other service is carried over an obstacle such as a river, valley, and other road or railway line, either with no intermediate support or with only a limited number of supports at convenient locations. Fig: Docklands Light Rail Bridge, London, England. Basic features of bridges: Superstructure `The superstructure of a bridge is the part directly responsible for carrying the road or other service. Its layout is determined largely by the disposition of the service to be carried. In most cases, there is a deck structure that carries the loads from the individual wheels and distributes the loads to the principal structural elements, such as beams spanning between the substructure supports. Road bridges carry a number of traffic lanes, in one or two directions, and may also carry footways. At the edge of the bridge, parapets are provided for the protection of vehicles and people. Rail bridges typically carry two tracks, laid on ballast, although separate superstructures are often provided for each track. They are narrow (about 2m wide) and are usually single span structures that rarely span more than 40m. Substructure: The substructure of a bridge is responsible for supporting the superstructure and carrying the loads to the ground through foundations. To support the superstructure, single span bridges ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Impact Of The British Empire 's Rule On India Essay Name: Student Number: Module: Module Code: The Impact of the British Empire's Rule on India Introduction In this essay I will be discussing the impact that the rule of the British Empire had on India's development as a nation. I will be looking at how British imperial rule both benefitted and hindered the growth of India economically, socially, and culturally. To do this I will be looking at the beginning of the British Empire's involvement in India, right up until India gained its independence from Britain on the 15th of August 1947. The purpose of this essay is to examine the long lasting effects of the British Empire on the Indian nation. India, like all colonies, was affected in many ways by the age of imperialism, and those effects are still evident today. The essay will look at both sides of the argument, allowing for positive and negative effects before finally concluding with a summary and re iteration of the points and arguments made throughout the essay. The essay will avoid taking sides, but rather the aim is to merely give an account of the positive and negative effects of British imperialism in India. The essay as previously mentioned will focus on the economic, cultural, and social effects. Historical Context and Background British involvement on the Indian subcontinent began early in the 17th Century through the British East India Company and its business ventures and dealings. The early British Empire was composed of several self governing colonies which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 60. Industrial Revolution: The Role Of Transportation In England Point 1– Transportation Prior to the Industrial Revolution, transportation in England was rudimentary. People and goods were moved using river barges however; this was a time–consuming and costly exercise. Roads were poorly built and rarely maintained. The railway network was nonexistent, and this limited transportation to wooden tracks and carriages pulled by horses. Technological advancements in the textile and iron industries caused the production of goods to become faster and cheaper. With advances in steam engine technology, numerous industries were led to adopt machinery that supported their production process. Through an intensified demand for goods, a revolution in the transportation industry commenced. Bodies of trustees now maintained roads, tolls were introduced, canals were built allowing sizeable barges to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The early roads in England were difficult to navigate, badly pot–holed and without signposting. However, in the 1750's the Turnpike trusts emerged. The Turnpike trusts were groups of people who maintained the roads regularly. Roads were straightened and made flatter and harder, tolls were also introduced. England has many rivers and waterways. However, as rivers weren't easy to navigate and didn't always stream to the areas where goods were required, canals (man–made waterways) were introduced. Francis Egerton (the Duke of Bridgewater) launched England's first real canal in 1761, which ran from Worsley to Manchester. Canals caused transportation to become more reliable, economic, smooth and fast. Railways eventually overtook roads and canals. Early English railways were constructed with carriages pulled by horses and wooden tracks connecting coalmines to rivers and canals. However, as technology advanced, Richard Trevithick built the first steam engine locomotive in 1804. This train ran on smooth metal rails and was the fastest transport to this date. Due to this, railways rapidly became both a predominant and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. The Rise Of The States : Evolution Of American State... This book, "The Rise of the States: Evolution of American State Government," by Jon Teaford, is his explanation of how the states have changed positively and negatively throughout the years. Each state has control over their citizens living in the state differently. Teaford addresses these issues in the form of his own discussion and explanations. Teaford begins with a background of the United States and different series of events that unfolded from the mistreatment of the national government to it's citizens. I enjoyed the quote by Roscoe Drummond, "Our federal system of states no longer exists and has no more chance of being brought back into existence than an apple pie can be put back on the apple tree." This is a great explanation of how the national government has changed vastly within history. Teaford writes, "State government and the study of state level leaders and policies had thus become respectable." Like I stated before, the national government was beginning to fall based upon the quotes listed at the beginning of the book from multiple people working for the government. This quote then explains how the state governments changed from within and spread outward. Like stated after this quote, putrefying state rule returned to life and political scientists were making up for past neglect. Our newer political scientists were reconstructing the bad image that our past historians left for our national government. Teaford also explains how the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

INTRODUCTION 1.1 Model: Consider a periodic railway operations system that follows a schedule, in nominal operation mode, assume that all the trains follow a pre–scheduled route, with a fixed train order and predefined connections. If for any of the reasons mentioned before delays are introduced in the network, it might be advantageous to change the train order so as to minimize the delays. 1.2 Requirements Specification:  In this project my main goal is to control the train accidents and also developed a system for trains which allows minimum and maximum waiting times.  The division head has control and timings by using the map.  It also make the count of no. of trains entered into the station as well as individual platform.  Train active status is also developed by selecting the associate train number and the motion also developed. 1.3 Problem Statement: The problem statement concentrates on the data entry perspective and expectations. • 69. Technological Innovations During World War One How Significant were Technological Innovations during World War One? World War One brought a completely new form of warfare. Gone were the old ways of cavalry and slow firing bolt–action rifles. The war symbolised a change in the way we understand and fight wars. Leon Trotsky said that 'War is the locomotive of history'. This was certainly true. The war was a catalyst for change. I am going to highlight three areas in which technological innovations made an impact – the development of submarines, the use of gas and the building of railways. I have chosen these three examples to demonstrate the different ways in which technological innovations affected the course of World War One. Gas had a huge psychological impact on the soldiers; submarines had a great economic impact, and the railways allowed the war to be fought on a vast scale never seen before. Significance can be understood in many different ways. I am going to understand significance by establishing criteria that will measure significance. These are – tactical, military, psychological, economic and social significances. I believe that the most important measure of significance in World War One is the social significance because in this war of attrition numbers killed was of great importance. The technological innovation of the submarine was most significant from an economic perspective because it was crucial in stopping the flow of supplies across the sea. The submarines' impact was felt both during the war, but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. The Chrysalids Character Analysis "We don't have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in the process of change. Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can change the world" (Hord Zinn). David is a telepathic boy living in a post apocalyptic nuclear wasteland, called the "Tribulation" in the book The Chrysalids. David manages to change the world and the vision of mutation and deviants. David would have never able to do that without the people around that changed him. This Essay will explore how Sophie, Uncle Axel and Gordon though minor characters have a major impact on David's development. Throughout the book Sophie had an exponential effect on David development even when not present. Firstly, when David meets meets Sophie and learns about Sophie's supplementary toe, David accepts Sophie for who she is. " It was all twisted and puffy – I didn't even notice then that it had more than the usual amount of toes..." (Wyndham 9). This is critical to David's development as it influenced him to ignore the rules of the uneducated town of Waknuk. Secondly, when Sophie is a suspected deviant David helps her run away to the fringes evading the law. "I managed to find some candles and light them, and when I had blown up the fire and put some more on, that helped to make the place seem less lonely." (49). In this quote David is trying to make the house seem occupied so the people of Waknuk do not get suspicious. This is imperative as for the first time in his life David rebelled against the rules ... • 73. Theme Of Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close We always hear about communication and language as a theme but we do not think about how the lack of communication can affect characterization and connections. In the novel, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, Jonathan Safran Foer displays just that. He also shows how communication is important in everyday life. In the novel, many relationships are made and damaged due to how people communicate and how they decide to deal with their obstacles. All the major characters, along with few minor characters, have to face troubles that test their relationship with not only the other characters in the story but within themselves. The first hint towards the theme occurs when Oskar goes to the art store and talks to the manager. She tells him very few details about the man who came in and wrote "Thomas Schell" on all the pieces of paper. Had she been able to reveal more about physical description, he would not think it was his dad, although he would still wonder why someone wrote his father's name. Thomas Schell Sr. finds everyday conversations difficult and tedious so it is no surprise that the manager did not have any socialization with him. By Thomas Sr. being non–verbal, it is showing his long lasting emotional pain – "I have not always been silent, I used to talk and talk and talk and talk, I could not keep my mouth shut, the silence overtook me like a cancer". When he does express what he needs to say towards Grandma, Foer's audience can tell Thomas is not as emotionally open ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Essay on The Development of Trade Unions for the Unskilled The Development of Trade Unions for the Unskilled The 'new model unions' were for the skilled workers and only covered a small section of the working class which meant a great mass of unskilled and semi–skilled workers remained largely unorganised this was with exceptions of the Miners' National Union and the Agricultural Labourers' Union. During the 1880s the unskilled workers were organised into what is called 'new unionism'. These new unions' main features were that they charged minimal subscriptions and adopted a much more militant stance towards the employers; this meant that the unions were prepared to use the strike weapon to gain their objectives. The revival of socialism was also important to the development of trade unions for the unskilled as a number of individual socialists inspired a number of the strikes which took place during the 1880s. The successful strikes which took place in 1888–9 saw the turning point for the unskilled and semi– skilled workers. In 1888 Annie Besant investigated the working conditions of female labour at Bryant and May's factory in East London. Here she found low wages, girls suffering from phosphorus poisoning and a harsh regime of rules and regulations. Mrs Besant organised The Match–Makers Unions which came out on strike and eventually the girls won an increase in wages and some of the rules were relaxed. This successful strike encouraged other unions to take on their employers. In 1889 Will Thorne , a member of the Social Democratic Federation, assisted by Eleanor Marx, formed the Gas workers' and General Labourers' Union. Thorne organised a strike at the Becton Gas–works and demanded a change from two 12–hour shifts to three 8 hour shifts. The employers agreed to the demand and an increase in wages. The summer of 1889 however saw the greatest struggle. In London's dockland the dockers were being badly paid and demoralised until Ben Tillett organised them into making a number of demands of the employers. • 77. India 's Economic Impact On India Essay As previously stated, Britain's economic interest in India had begun in the 1600's when the British East India Company set up trading posts in several Indian cities such as Madras, Bombay, and Calcutta (Age of Imperialism 2012). At first, the Mughal dynasty which ruled India at the time, had kept European traders under control. But by 1707, the Mughal dynasty had begun to collapse and many small states began to break away from under the control of the Mughal dynasty. In 1757, Robert Clive led the East India Company troops to a swift and decisive victory over Indian defence forces along with the French at the Battle of Plassey. From then on, the British East India Company was the leading power in India (Age of Imperialism 2012). Throughout the 18th and 19th century, many events have taken place in the world. One of these events was the industrial revolution starting in England and then eventually spreading to other countries in Europe (Chauhan 1989: 109). This economic impact affected India because of how an English man by the name of Thomas Stevens managed to motivate four of London's traders to travel to India. The industrial revolution allowed for Britain to obtain the raw materials for its monopoly of factories that they were in need of as well as a location to sell their valuable goods. What occurred after was a struggle of power in 18th century India. The Mughal empire was declining in forces which gave the British the power to take full control due to their large ... • 79. Essay about The Death Railway of World War II Abstract The saying of, "Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it" is one that deserves more focus. One might ask, "Why?" The answer is the fact that countless events in history have been overlooked and forgotten. Such is the case of the Thai– Burma Railway also known as the "Death Railway", a line between Bang Pong and Thanbyuzayat. This, in and of itself is a tragedy. The inhuman conditions of thousands of POW's as they labored in the Thai–Burma jungle during World War II is something that should never be forgotten. Those who survived and those who did not deserve commendation for their strength, and reverence as heroes. Thus, why does no one know their story, their suffering, and their past? This past, this history, needs to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What was to be done with them? In the eyes of the Japanese, they were a disgrace to mankind. A Japanese man would rather die than be humiliated with the charge of giving up. They were taught to never surrender and fight until death for their Emperor (Lee, 1998). This concept baffled the Japanese. The idea of prisoners had not occurred to them. These men were dishonorable, and the thought of feeding and taking care of the dishonorable repulsed the Japanese (Pitt & Mason, 1993). For a while, the issue was not dealt with, and the POW's were left alone. Unfortunately, that was not to be their permanent state of being. Soon, an "inspiration" gave light to the issue. The Japanese discovered they held in their hands a free work force. In these dishonorable men, lay the path to accomplishing the new goals being set for a nation at war (La Forte & Marcello, 1993). The Death Railway was one of these "new goals". Its intent was to join two pre–existing railroads; one, running from Singapore to Ban Pong and Bangkok, the other from Ye on the Andaman coast to Rangoon. The plan was to unite these two railroads by building a line from Ban Pong to Thanbyuzayat, a small village 50 miles north of Ye (La Forte & Marcello, 1993). The Railway had three major purposes and desirable attributes for Japan. First, the Railway was to provide supplies and reinforcements as Japan was fighting the British in northern Burma at the time. • 81. Offender Profiling Offender profiling, or criminal profiling, is an investigative tool used by law enforcement agencies. It is used when a perpetrator(s) is unknown and traditional physical methods (such as DNA sample to cross match) are either unavailable or are insufficient in identifying a suspect. It involves the analysis of a crime scene(s) and other data in order to create a profile of the type of person a criminal may be. The 'clues' given in a profiling case are drawn from the type of crime or attack, the location of choice, and in the case of murder – the choice of victim(s). As well as the deductions made using physical and psychological clues, it also utilises a combination of appraisal and statistics. The comparison to similar offences is also used, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both types of offender profiling represent attempts to deduce the characteristics of an offender(s) by analysing the specific characteristics of their offence(s). Both can be used as an appendage to traditional police work in order to link crimes, narrow the potential field of suspects, focus their investigation. That being said, there are some quite significant differences in their application and the types of data they are likely to ascertain about an offender. Geographical works under the assumption that crime has no random distribution (Canter, 2000). Geographical profiling attempts to predict information regarding offenders by analysing the location and timing of offences. It can be used to establish if a number of offences may or may not have been undertaken by the same offender. In the cases that are linked, they can predict characteristics of an offender; this include where they may be likely to live and if they may be knowledgeable about a particular area. In doing this, police are able to focus their resources to a general area which is more efficient, and helps to prioritise suspects. Geographical profiling helps officers to understand the correlation between offending and location; this in turn can yield information as to why particular areas may attract more offences and why. High crime areas naturally need more police presence and resources; therefore, identifying where and when crime is most likely to occur, allows resources to be distributed more ...
