Games Design
Elements
In this lesson we are going to
explore Games Design Elements
and use what we will learn to start
designing our own game.
 The areas which the Games Designers
have to consider when designing a game.
 Narrative design

 Character design

 Level / environment design

 Gameplay and game mechanics design

 User interface design
 The Story behind the game.

 Is there someone to save? Somewhere to
    escape from?
 When we think of character design we
 think of the following things:
 • Main character / sidekick/ villain / shop owner
     (sprite)
 • Objects the player interacts with
 • ( for example the mushrooms from super mario!)
 • Players / Actors / avatars
 • ( xbox connect with augmented reality
 • or Miis in Wii console games,
 • LA Noir uses real actors first then
 • characters are developed)
 The level and the environment not only sets the
scene for the player it can also set challenges.
 Things to consider:
   • Background, Lighting, weather, map, props
     etc.
 How the game works.
 Things to consider are:
  • Types of challenges, activities, rewards,
   progression, game rules, skill, chance.
 Design elements such as:
  • Control (input) devices
  • Output devices
  • Viewpoint
  • Heads up Display (HUD)
 Look at three games of your choice and
    tell me a little about:

 Narrative design
 Character design
 Level / environment design
 Gameplay and game mechanics design
 User interface design
