This document describes a fuzzy logic approach to control magnetization levels in the magnetic core of a welding transformer. The fuzzy logic controller is proposed to work alongside an artificial neural network-based detector of magnetic saturation. Membership functions are defined for the controller inputs of flux and welding current, and output of transformer primary voltage. Rules are defined so that if flux or current exceed limits, the voltage direction is reversed to reduce flux. Simulation results show the controller maintains flux and current within limits, preventing current spikes that could cause overcurrent protection and system shutdown. The fuzzy logic approach provides an alternative to typically used hysteresis controllers.
