Our Standards Maryland VSC Standard - 1.A.1.c – Complete a function table using a one-operation (+,-,/,x) -1.A.1.d – Describe the relationship that generates a one-operation rule. Maryland Technology Literacy Student Standard (MTLSS) - 3.A.1.a Use technology tools, including software and hardware, from a range of teacher-selected options to learn new content or reinforce skills.
What is a Function? A function is a rule, sometimes using variables, that changes a number (input), using multiplication, division, addition, and/or subtraction creating a new number (output) Watch the introduction Movie.
Functions In the incomplete equation + 5 = ___ , Is the input _____ is the output + 5 is the rule
Practice using a Function In the incomplete equation + 5 = ___ , INPUT 2 into Apply the rule + 5 2 + 5 = ____ OUTPUT 7
Solving the Rule If you are given the input and the output, you must determine how the number changed using addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. Practice using a Function 6 ______ = 9 7 ________ = 10 The rule must be + 3 because 6 + 3=9 and 7 + 3 = 10 + 3 + 3
Sometimes we use “function machines” to determine rules of functions. Practice using a Function The rule of the function Input Output 12 8 + 4
