Essay about Sherman Anti-Trust Act (Constitutional Law)

Re: Sherman Antitrust Act
Facts
John Davison Rockefeller was the founder of Standard Oil Company in 1870 and ran it until he retired
in 1897. Standard Oil gained almost complete control over the oil refining market in the United States
by underselling its competitors. Rockefeller and his associates owned dozens of corporations
operating in just one state.
The Sherman Antitrust Act was enacted on July 2nd, 1890 which prohibits activities that restrict
interstate commerce and competition in the marketplace.
Issue Cal Hockley owns numerous steel mills in 1912. Cal believed that if he was taken to court for
breaking the Sherman Antitrust Act that his lawyers would simply argue that Cal is not in violation ...

Furthermore, the subjectmatters of the combination and the combination itself are not excluded from
the scope of the act as being matters of intrastate commerce and subject to state control.
In Standard Oil Co. v. United States, 221 U.S. 1 (U.S. 1911) Standard oil and 37 other corporations
were alleged to have engaged in conspiring to restrain the trade in petroleum and monopolize the
petroleum industry. The Supreme Court ruled that combining the defendants oil companies stock to be
a restraint of trade and an attempt to monopolize the oil industry and maintain dominance and
therefore a violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act.
Furthermore, in Standard Oil Co., the Supreme Court stated that The term monopoly, ... as used in the
Sherman Act was intended to cover such monopolies or attempts to monopolize as were known to
exist in this country; those which were defined as illegal at common law by the States, when applied
to intrastate commerce. The Supreme Court went on to further state that the principles of the common
law applied to interstate as well as to intrastate commerce.
Analysis In the issue of Cal Hockley s steel mills, it is clear that the courts would find Cal Hockley in
violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act, even though the conduct

College Debt And Student Completion And Attendance

College Debt and Student Completion and Attendance In mid 2010 higher education debt surpassed
credit card debt at $830 billon dollars(Clemmitt 877 900). Debt has become an increasing problem for
students who want to attend college. As more students try to further their education, tuition rises and
so does the amount of loans taken out each year. According to Belkin, Students attending public four
year institutions this academic year are paying an average of $12,620, up $220 from last year, for
tuition, room and board, meaning that tuition is only growing not decreasing from previous
years(Belkin n.p.). Many people debate over whether they should attend college and be in debt or if
they should get a job somewhere that allows them to live a comfortable life debt free. Two thirds of
college graduates have to take out loans in order to get through college(Dwyer, McCloud, Hodson
1133 1155). Many people question, Does rising college debt limit who attends and completes college?
, while many people have different opinions on this particular subject, I believe that it depends on the
student and their situation if college debt limits who attends and completes college because it depends
on their financial stability, it depends on if they are borrowing the right amount and it depends on if
their degree provides them with the means to pay back their loans, however, many people would
disagree with me and say that yes, college

The Importance Of Flaunt The Belly
Since the iconic picture of a pregnant Demi Moore on the cover of Vanity Fair all those years ago,
more and more women have been gravitating towards revealing pregnancy photographs. It s a time to
shine, not cover your growing belly with voluminous coverings. A studio maternity shoot will allow
you to be comfortable showing your body. 1. You re Glowing This is a time when you might not feel
your best, but it s a time when you re actually glowing. A great photographer can help you see how
beautiful you really are right now as the life inside you develops. 2. Flaunt the Belly Anyone who has

Blek s Graffiti Art
A tag is the most basic writing of an artist s name; it is a form of which an artist gain recognition. A
graffiti writer s tag is his or her personalized signature. Graffiti is more destructive, they use aerosol,
hard to read and they usually do it at night. Street art use different mode of paintings, they do it in
broad daylight and it is more acceptable by the community. The artist are treated differently depending
on the type of art they are showing. If the art is more acceptable by the people around, then they are
praised by their work. Usually the defining factor on whether or not Graffiti art is considered legal is
based on permission. This is not a universal rule and every city will have its own process for
determining where and what type of Graffiti art is acceptable. There is a basic idea or feeling that a
highly tagged neighborhood has been overrun by criminals or street gangs or that it is simply an area
of a city that is not worth caring about.
Arts is very powerful tool that can change the way we view towards our society and it is more
powerful than words itself; it gives us a sense of awareness, it affect our way of thinking by sending
us messages that we never thought before and it is more often used as a political commentary. It can
change the world by using it as a form of mass communication to our society. In Blek s ... Show more

that the audience (which includes rich and influential people) are limited and most ordinary people

people in the society. Art maybe considered as a weapon that could influenced your mind and change

Breakfast Club Themes
The Breakfast Club is a popular film that came out in 1985. This movie was produced and directed by
John Hughes, who is extremely well known and spectacular movie producer. John Hughes also
produced Sixteen Candles, Home Alone, Ferris Bueller s Day Off, Pretty in Pink, and many more. In
almost all of John Hughes movies they are based on teenagers and these films impress many. The
Breakfast Club is a comedy drama film, which is remembered to be one of the best movies of all time
and I agree. The acting, theme hidden within the movie, and plot make it the most prime film ever.
The Breakfast Club without a doubt is an outstanding film and it would not have been this incredible

style, which is shown from the beginning to the end of the film. This theme shows that you can not
judge other people, until you get to know them, which The Breakfast Club presents. All the elements,
including the plot, made this movie such a success. This film was set in a small town in Chicago
during the mid 80 s. On a saturday, five students show up to school for their detention not knowing
how the day will go. Each student is from a different group of friends, so they are strangers to each

How To Write An Essay About Kendrick Lamar
Concert Review: Kendrick Lamar To begin I d like to mention that I love Kendrick Lamar; to me he is
a lyrical genius especially in an era where rap has changed to an even more violent tone. Most people
could all agree that he is the most stimulating and uplifting rapper for this current generation. Hip hop
seemed to need Kendrick Lamar and as we can tell his positive influence is spreading across the
nation as he recently won a Grammy topping even more known rappers such as drake. In this day and
age most successful rappers make a living and fan base off of negative and criminal action. Despite
that Kendrick Lamar tries to spread positivity in his music and motivation for people who aren t living

fans that one point he even started picking from the crowd up the stage to sing along with him.
Harmony was created between Kendrick and the crowd immediately and we could enjoy the special
moment. To slow down a bit the fans were then exploited to tracks with much deeper tones and
textures. With a track such as The blacker the berry the crowd couldn t help but to just appreciate the
hard work the performer was putting into this piece. Just by Kendrick Lamar s face we could tell the
amount of meaning and emotion this track hold within him. To show our appreciation it seemed like
everyone in the crowd read each other s minds as we all raised our hands and waved them
acknowledging the young rappers motivation. To show his appreciation Kendrick Lamar even went on
to mention how the city of Houston had showed him much love over the years and truly appreciated
the support he had received in order to earn the position that he is in today. This immediately gave off
the feeling of being united and trying to understand another man s struggle. To close out the show in
fashion we were repaid with tracks such as ADHD a throwback for

The Decline Of Native American And Inupiat Culture
The American government and society has played a substantial role in the decline of both the Native
American and Inupiat culture. They created inhumane boarding schools and oppressing laws that
inhibited those of a different culture from being themselves and partook in the urbanization of cultured
communities. The following practices need to be stopped and never forgotten so that such ethnocide
doesn t happen again. Boarding schools were an issue that plagued both Native Americans and
Inupiats. As conveyed by the writings of Mary Crow Dog and other Native American figures, we see
how the effects of such schools were devastating to the native population. Boarding schools wiped
Natives of their language and culture, teaching young children to be ashamed of what makes them
unique. Pupils would return from their long stays at boarding schools, unable to speak to their own
family, resulting in an isolation between themselves and their community. Over the years, generations
would eventually lose most of what makes them native and, for the most part, their culture slowly
faded away. It seems that the Inupiat people faced a similar fate. Inupiat children were forced to learn
by Western standards, eventually forgetting their crucial survival skills, language, religion and other
unique aspects of their culture. However, we are exposed to a more positive outlook towards boarding
schools in the book, Fifty Miles from Tomorrow, where William Hensley says he enjoyed his boarding
school

Exploring How the British Could Have Achieved Victory in...
An Investigation into How the British could have achieved victory in the American War of
Independence
The American War of Independence was perhaps the first colonial war of independence during the
period of European dominance across the globe. Great Britain, a relatively new country with a stable,
democratic government, established an enormous trading empire which stretched from North America
to East India and was the greatest superpower on Earth. It came to be so, firstly by its highly effective
navy which allowed it to transport goods and defeat other rival fleets. Its government of elected
officials allowed it to function more effectively compared to an Absolute Monarchy in terms of
generating revenue from its colonies, and finally, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is believed she gave word to Paul Revere that the British were planning on destroying the armouries
at Lexington and Concord and thus he spread the famous line of The British are coming! Many British
Generals serving throughout the French Indian War began to sympathize with the colonists who
fought alongside the British. This meant that many of the experienced and greatest of British Generals,
including Gage himself, did not believe that war was the right option and did not believe in the British
cause. So to prevent the catastrophes that Gage caused during the first months of the War, the British
should have given the position to a General who was both capable but also sensible. Historians believe
that if General Charles Cornwallis had of served in his stead then the early British disasters could have
been avoided and the colonists would have been crushed in the first few months. Cornwallis was a
competent commander, but when he inherited his Lordship, he often voted against heavy taxation of
the colonies. Many blame him for the British defeat of the War because of his surrender at Yorktown
but with his intervention at an earlier date, such a competent commander could have increased the
odds of the British winning the war.
The British Army was a well trained but in no way was it battle hardened . Being an island nation,
Britain predominantly used its navy as its main weapon and the regular army for sea to land assaults

this story was about divorce. We have to infer the conflict and what the character are like. They must
be not getting along at this point in life because she is doing something behind his back and the mom
thinks he has also done things behind her back. The same things go with the dialog. Although there is
not much dialog in the story, when there is, it is really meaningful and it serves a good purpose in the
story and it helps advance the plot. If there was no dialog the story would not have ended up the way it
did. For example, He laughs. Momma, you forgot me already! I think if the little boy would never had

The Coca Plant And The Physical Effects Of The Coca Plant
Coca is native to western South American is one of only four cultivated plants in the Erthroxylacease
family. The plant is grown in mass in the following six: countries Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia,
Ecuador, Mexico and Peru; however, it is illegal to cultivate the crop in these countries. (Figure 1) The
crop flourishes in warm climates and usually under the direction of a large Drug Cartel. The coca plant
has been a traditional stimulant similar to coffee in many Andean cultures. (Stolberg, 2011) The
alkaloid content of coca leaves is relatively low, between 0.25% and 0.77%. (Juan C. Negrete, 1978).
Since the coca plant has been around for thousands of years, it s important to understand the history of
the plant and how it has been used. With medical science advancement it is also essential we
understand and track the physical effects of the plant has on the human body. Finally, we must take
into account what the medical field is reporting with regard to the Coca plant.
History of the Coca Plant
As archeologist study mummies remains they continue to find traces of coca leaves extract within the
bodies and have recorded as far back at 3000 years ago. Coca was used for millennia by indigenous
people of the New World das a general stimulate as well as for medical and other varied purposes.
(Stolberg, 2011) Archeologist have found evidence that coca was used in the Andean region of South
America and some parts of Central America. The key evidence they are relying on are small ceramic
lime containers which have traces of coca leaves and follow wall stories showing what looks like
chewing of the leaves. Samples of these bowls have been excavated and are on display in many
museums.
Coca chewing may originally have been limited to the eastern Andes before its introduction to the
Inca. (Stolberg, 2011) During the Inca rule, it was known that coca was for the elite such as the priest.
One more example of social status throughout history and separation of classes .
Fast forward to the early European explores and the New World era. As we have journals and diaries
to rely on the historical account of what happened during this time; Italian explorers provide accounts
of chewing of coca leaves in Venezuela back

The s Present And Past History During The Time Of The...
Give me liberty or give me death. This quote was spoken by Patrick Henry. This paper will discuss
Massachusett s present and past history during the time of the Revolutionary War; as well as the
causes of the war, Sons of Liberty, and important battles. Boston was where the action began. It began
with taxes being raised, acts being made, such as the Stamp act. They were upset because legislature
was taxing the Americans without a representative for the people(Bomboy). British forces arriving
was another cause. Then, the Boston Tea Party and the Boston Massacre occurred. Key figures and
leaders came forward, such as Paul Revere, Samuel Adams, and John Hancock and they started calling
for action(Sword She Seeks Under Liberty). Meanwhile in Worcester, political control was with the
Americans, but the court was under control of the British. The British were attempting to regain
control by marching on the courthouse where the citizens were gathered. The citizens held the British
forces back but later were afraid that without protecting the courthouse at night, the British would take
control of the courthouse, then take their tools, livestock, or farms as punishment and this sent people
into more disarray. Tensions were escalating between people, so reasonable patriots called for a
meeting of several counties that were involved in this. Meanwhile, British General Thomas Gage
decided that he would hold the troops in Worcester at the time. He would take the Courthouse back

Commedia Dell Arte and Influences on Modern Theatre
Commedia dell Arte is an interesting form of acting in the history of theatre. During the 16th, 17th and
18th century, in the midst of the renaissance, there was a very delightful source of entertainment that
people where privy too. This archaic form of acting was based around improvising and the use of
masks. I am comparing this to modern day comedy since I have seen direct examples on television,
which use this method of acting, in modern day shows. The fact that some of these performers were
verging on genius is without dispute. Contemporary performers have looked into the past finding
resourceful techniques to further illustrate comedy to their peers.
The first question is why use Commedia Dell Arte as a training tool for modern ... Show more content

Fusing together these elements, a mask maker produces a shape that is no longer purely human.
Hence, if a human wears this mask, there are discrepancies between mask and body, which counteract
each other s expressiveness. It becomes necessary, therefore, for the human to adjust his or her body
shape to fit the mask. The design and style that comes from the three elements of mask design allow
the actor at any point to move into animal movement, devilishly bad behavior or simply carry out the
order of the plot in role.
This juncture is an ideal place to start feeding specific instances of the characters body language.
Those who are capable of exploring attitudes, energy levels, and their own inner resources can be
guided through that process. Those who need more encouragement, and have not yet learned to trust
the passion for discovery or their own emotions can be given more hard concrete information to work
with. The middle path must be looked for, and in this there is the whole tradition of the commedia dell
arte to help. A character survives on stage because it is alive. One of the problems any performer or
actor faces is selecting his or her material. In traditional Commedia Dell Arte, this is key to success,
and is needed on a moment to moment basis. However, what becomes clear after a while is that
commedia dell arte works best as an ensemble art form. Which is true in theatre

Compare And Contrast When Wilson Smith Goes To Washington
Jefferson Smith shares almost no similarities with Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. The movie Mr.
Smith goes to Washington portrays this statement very well. Jefferson Smith was honest, civilized, and

cannot be compared to each other for similarities. In this movie, Mr. Smith goes to Washington, we
see Mr. Smith was the only honest character found in the movie. Everyone was lying against him
throughout the movie, and Mr. Smith couldn t do anything about it. He proved his honesty when he
filibustered for about twenty four hours. It really showed how loyal he was to what he wanted. We see

The Philip Defanco Show
For a week I chose to watch and compare The Rachel Maddow Show and The Philip DeFranco Show.
I had chosen to compare the two because they are both personality driven news shows, with the
similar format of one presenter and a skew towards a liberal political stance. These similarities will
allow me to more clearly see a difference in how I consume the content. The format of the show
hosted by Maddow, a cable news show on MSNBC, has remained for the most part, static, it could
have been produced 30 years ago to the same effect through television. Whereas, DeFranco s show on
YouTube would never have been able to exist in its capacity if it were not for the internet. Clearly
marking the distinction between old and new media to me.
I firstly noted that the news stories which were covering by the two sources were mainly different.
While DeFranco skewed more towards pop culture, Maddow was more focused on governmental
events. Both however, covered American politics and events. One intersecting story which occurred

Personification And Symbolism In The Raven By Edgar Allen Poe
The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe, is a poem in which the narrator is in a spell of depression likely due to
the sudden and tragic death of his lover. Within the first few lines, it becomes apparent that he is
missing somebody, when he says Lenore constantly while waiting at the door. As his wait comes to an
end, he begins to hear a similar tapping sound coming from his window, once he opens the window a
raven comes into his room. It is here that the narrator begins to ask the raven questions, for which he
will only receive the same answer and in return increase his frustration. Apart from the apparent
frustration and depression of the narrator, there are two key literary devices of the poem that play a
significant role in the revealing of themes. The first is personification, which is the act of giving
inanimate items human traits, such as crying and laughing. Then comes symbolism, which can be
referred to as using a tangible object to represent something else. In The Raven , Poe uses
personification and symbolism to explore how humans can bring misery upon themselves. Throughout
the poem, personification occurs at various points and helps intensify the dark and haunting
atmosphere, which seems to be growing around the narrator. For instance, in the second stanza the
narrator says, And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor. This is an example of
personification solely because ghosts are usually formed by anything that was alive, whereas an ember
is a mere inanimate object bound to last only a couple of minutes to a couple of hours. Other than the
example of a dying ember in stanza two, there is yet another example of personification in the second
stanza. And that example being, This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, Lenore! For
something to murmur, it must have a voice and within the room there was no one else besides the
narrator. Although there was no other human besides the narrator in the room, there was the raven who
was still outside, which in return increased the overall spookiness of the room. For it could ve been the
raven who murmured. Upon hearing Lenore the depressed lover lost his somewhat stable state of
mind. In addition to these two examples

human sensitivity toward the busyness of life. My own struggle with being prompt was met with great
understanding and compassion by Ms. McCormick. This reinforced my own determination to extend
similar grace to those whom I am given oversight. The fourth AECT Standard dealing with
management was my greatest connection here. Thank you Ms. McCormick for a well organized and

The Current System Of Education
Imagine a world without the abilities to feed or drink, count, or speak. Imagine a world without the
knowledge of health and wellness, problem solving, or the ability to interact with one another.
Education is important to know yourself and the world around us, prepares us for what the future
holds, and teaches us the skills we need in order to survive. But what is an education without the right
methods of teaching? Without the motivation and encouragement? Without the funds to increase help
for students? I believe that the current system of education fails to prepare our children for the future.
We live in a country where equality of educational opportunities is deficient, test taking defines

Billions of billions of dollars. For data that is too late to use, says Canada. The test results would
unquestionably benefit students if they were at least received before that school year had started,
therefore students can determine the specific problem solving and skills they need to work on in order
to be successful that year. Regular testing, being the trusted method that defines a student s success, is
also found unreliable. Today s schools fail, the Caines explain, because they concentrate only on
memorization instead of building on the multiple and complex powers of the human brain (Boggs,
141). Stuck in the world of biased and opinionated point of views and class topics, we forget about the
world of creativity where we can expand and explore on our own thoughts, opinions, and ideas.
Schools are seeking knowledge of basic ideas, including identifying main idea or what the author is
trying to persuade in their text, while avoiding teaching meaningful lessons that will actually be useful
and benefit students.
It is up to the students to work hard on assignments and study for tests with a positive class attitude,
however the teacher s techniques applied in the classroom play a role in student s success and
improvement. ...Testing has become more frequent and more punitive, forcing teachers to teach to a
sterile and often meaningless test, suppressing the creativity of committed teachers

The Case For Investment Into Art And The Development Of...
2.1 Art Index and Methodology The case for investment into art and the development of art indices
has been at the forefront of the evolution of investing into alternative assets. Databases, indices, and
market reports are now essential analytical tools with which art investors can assess financial
performance. Over the past few decades, researchers have used different methodologies to calculate
the financial returns on art investments, based on public auction records.
2.1.1 General Review There are four main methodologies for producing art price indices. Average
prices, geometric means, repeat sales and hedonic regressions. The first significant study was by Stein
(1977), who analyzes the financial return of auctioned paintings in USA and Britain for the period of
1946 68 by using the average prices methods. Stein considered the auctioned objects each year as a
random sample of the underlying stock of art and constructs an index based on the yearly average
transaction price. Baumol (1986) and Frey and Pommerehne (1989) calculate the geometric mean
return on works that sold at least twice during the considered time frame. Baumol constructs a data set
of transaction prices of the best known art works from 1652 to 1961 in London by using geometric
mean method. Revisiting Baumol s study, Frey and Pommerehne enlarge the data set by extending the
time period to 1987 and including auction sales from European countries. However, these two
methods do not enable the construction

The Immortals:
The Immortals were an elite regiment of handpicked men trained from childhood into elite warriors.
They were imperial guards of the Achaemenid Sahs. Achaemenid brick reliefs in Persepolis represent
the Immortals as wearing elaborate robes and golden jewellery, although these garments would have
only been worn for ceremonial occasions as they would be impractical in warfare. Cyrus the Great
was the founder of the Immortals. During Cyrus s conquests, 10,000 of his finest troops were gathered

Essay about Banning Books in Schools
School boards and teachers have a responsibility for protecting the minds of their students and
covering age appropriate material. However, does this responsibility cover the extreme act of banning
books from school classrooms? Does not the teacher have a duty to introduce to their students world
issues in order to better the students ability to cope with problems in the world? How does a school
decide which books should be banned from the classroom, and should it be left up to the teacher to
decide what is decided in his/her classroom. By banning books from the classroom, we prevent our
students from learning about controversial topics in a safe environment, and we also encroach upon
the student s freedom of reading what they want in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to the American Library Association, the most common group of people, challenging a
book being read in schools, was the parents of the students. Parents have a right to be in charge of
what is put into the minds of their students, however just because one parent objects does not mean
that the whole school should ban the book from the list. A solution for this book would be to enforce
parental consent for books to be read in the classroom. If a parent does not want a book to be read in
the classroom, then there should be other options for the student to read. The school and teacher
should not trespass on a parent s rights of raising their child. I believe that if a parent has a concern,
they should go and discuss the problem with the teacher so that the teacher will be able to defend their
reasoning for choosing the book to be read in the classroom.
If a controversial book will be read in the classroom, it is the teacher s responsibility to prepare the
student for it. The teacher must ensure that the book is age appropriate for the student, and is
appropriate for the subject matter that the teacher is covering. Reading books such as Catcher in The
Rye without discussion can be more harmful than helpful to a student. The Catcher in The Rye has
obscene language, violence, occult practices, and sexual references (Doyle 2010). This book should
only be read by a mature age group with a

State Budget Vs Federal Budget
What is a budget? A budget forecasts the financial results and financial position of a company for one
or more future periods. A budget is used for planning and performance measurement purposes, which
can involve spending for fixed assets, rolling out new products, training employees, setting up bonus
plans, controlling operations, and so forth (Bragg, 2017).
The state of Georgia use different budgeting tools for example revenue projection. The state budget is
made up from the children that are attending grade school from kindergarten thru twelfth. Low income
parent and children and elderly individuals who is in need of medical coverage are included as well.

Like most states, Georgia collects revenue from a mix of personal and corporate income taxes, sales
taxes, gas and vehicle taxes, and various other levies and fees. Income taxes are the cornerstone of
Georgia s revenue system, accounting for about half of all state funds. Sales taxes are the second
largest revenue source, accounting for nearly a quarter of annual collections. A fair and reliable
revenue system requires both of these taxes (Bragg, 2017). With budgeting, the federal government
use different budgeting tools for example they may use pie graphs or budget trends graphs. The
federal budget is made up of General Funds which consist of education, public safety and most other
traditional state services are paid for from the General Fund, which includes money raised by the

Social Cost Of Violent Crime Report
The estimated victim s social cost for burglary(without injury) is $1,400.00, while the estimated
offender s opportunity cost for burglary (without injury) is $1,100.00 (Miller, Cohen, Wiersema,
1996).
Social Costs of Violent Crimes Violent crimes are defined as crimes that entail the use of force or
harm to the physical body of another person. The gravity of a violent crime is typically established by
the scale of bodily harm caused. The utilization of a weapon raises the severity of the offense (Izzi,
2014). Common violent crimes might include assault, aggravated robbery, sexual abuse, domestic
violence, battery, rape, and homicide. Other crimes can be categorized violent even when the victim is

rehabilitation, and emotional traumas caused by the crime. Physical or psychological damage that
brings about a loss of quality of life for the victim and/or the victim s family is an intangible cost.
Criminal
Common tangible or opportunity costs incurred by the offender include lost wages, loss of tax
revenue, legal and court costs, possible fines, fees, and monetary reimbursements to the victim and/or
victim s family. Typical intangible costs for the offender involve the loss of their freedom, the guilt of
financial and emotional impact on their family, the weight of responsibility of their actions, and in
cases that call for the death penalty a loss of their very life. For example, tangible costs of an armed
robbery that results in an injury to the victim might include damages to the victim s material
belongings or property, the cost to repair the damage or cover the value of damaged or lost items, and
if the victim is injured the medical costs associated with care. If the victim is killed during the robbery
the charge escalates to homicide and the victim s family receives compensation for the material losses
and financial costs of the crime. The tangible costs to the offender would be to cover these losses and
reimburse the victim/family for their financial and physical suffering, as well as pay legal fees and

Yankees from the outskirts of Atlanta with an offensive blow. ( The Battle of Atlanta Summary Facts )
During the battle, John Hood wanted to push the union out of Atlanta. He planned a fifteen mile hike,
then a flank attack that would be carried out by Hardee and his men. Hardee s army ended up off
schedule because of the poor conditions of his troops, but he still carried out the attack.( The Battle of

its political importance. ( Battle Of Atlanta ) The Union had the luck of the day, because McPherson

the Confederates had failed, thankfully because of McPherson s quick thinking. The victory greatly

Union might had never won. In the end of it all, out of all the soldiers, 74,000 did not walk out of the

Charlie Fish Use Of Foreshadowing In Death By Scrabble
Charlie Fish s story Death by Scrabble is a suspenseful story about how much a husband wanted to
kill his wife. Fish uses foreshadowing, red herring, and sensory imagery in his story. The use of these
Art of Suspense techniques can inspire readers to continue to the end, wondering what will happen
next.
Foreshadowing is a common technique used in stories, whether it is fiction or nonfiction. In the story,
Death by Scrabble, the author makes it that for every word played in the game, the word, in a way,
comes true. When the husband plays ZAP, his wife gets an electric shock. As well as when he plays
EXPLODES, the air conditioning unit explode[d] (Fish 2). The author hints that the wife is aware of
what her husband is planning when she plays CAUTION as one of her words. When Fish writes about
how much the husband wants to kill his wife, he writes: Maybe I should kill her, if only I had a D,
then I could play MURDER (Fish 1). This leads us, the readers, to believe that the husband wants to
kill his wife and is, in some way, excited to do so. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

thomas cole Essay
Thomas Cole
Painting landscapes was very important during the 19th century. Thomas Cole was one of the most
important figures in landscape painting in the United States. He went to many places searching for
nature, which he painted to show the unmatchable beauty nature creates. His works of art helped
people see and take pride in their great land, which was called America. Cole s works were often made
people feel like they needed to go out in nature and discover the inspiring world of mother earth.
Thomas Cole, born on February 1, 1801 in Lancashire, England, found himself at fourteen working as
a textile printer and wood engraver in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Cole returned to his parents in 1819
in Ohio; this is were he learned how to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These painters saw landscapes having feelings of hope, divinity, and even harmony. The Hudson River
School was a very important asset to American culture and art. Bordering countries during the
nineteenth century were demolishing America and made Americans want to see their nation survive as
an independent nation.
Cole focuses on the American landscape and mixes idealism and realism into his paintings to really
get viewers to admire nature and its beauty. He believed that landscape painters needed to have
strength determination, and courage to overcome Mother Nature s more turbulent side.
Then, in 1825, John Trumball, an artist, discovered Cole s magnificent work in a frame at a frame
shop. Trumball immediately bought lots of Cole s works and drew art critics attention. With the
Hudson River School being so prosperous the National Academy of design was born.
In the early nineteenth century landscape artists painted scenes of America s east side near the Hudson
River, but by the mid nineteenth century Landscape artists tended to paint portraits of the newly
explored western territory and the South American tropics to show a more extravagant side of the
United States.
Cole s first major painting, The Course of the Empire, was a symbolistic illustration showing the five
stages of an empire; which were the savage state, pastoral state, consummation of the empire,
destruction, and finally desolation. The different canvases display the relationship between man and

Human Life In Thornton Wilder s Play Our Town
Thornton Wilder s play, Our Town, outlines the lives of two families realistically from 1901 to 1913.
Multiple themes are presented through the lives of these families in three separate acts: Daily Life ,
Love and Marriage , and Death and Eternity . Although each act entails different commonly faced
problems and themes, the play does not lack a central, universal theme. Each act contributes to a main
theme about human life that, even after 81 years, is still relevant to society today. The main theme of
the play, Our Town, is that human life is repetitive and temporary. The repetition of daily life can
mainly be found in Acts I and II, where the Gibbes, Webbs, and other characters continually do the
same thing everyday. The first act, Daily Life , begins with Howie Newsome, deliverin the milk
(Wilder 10) to the Webb and Gibbs families. Similarly to Act I, the second act, Love and Marriage ,
starts with Howie Newsome delivering the milk (49). The beginnings of the acts presents little change
between the mornings of three years. Therefore, Wilder has symbolized repetition in a human s life
through the characters in Our Town. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During Act III Emily revisits a day when she was alive, but soon realizes it goes so fast (108). In
addition, Simon Stimson comments on the ignorance and blindness (109) of live people during Emily
s funeral. Both display how temporary life is and that the living do not realize the temperance of life
until it is gone. The theme of human life being temporary is also shown in Acts I and II. Both acts
begin similarly and show the repetitive nature of human life but also show life being temporary. For
example, the beginning act starts with the paper boy, Joe Crowell, Jr., delivering the newspaper, but in
the second act Joe is replaced with Si Crowell. Further proving that human life is

Self Assessment Paper
To verify the first indicator, a survey will be used. Surveys can gather large amounts of data, and can
be administered through mail, e mail, or face to face. As this survey is in the process of being
developed, it is essential that the survey undergoes testing to ensure the survey is measuring what it
needs to measure. A method that will be utilised will be a survey with a rating scale used as the tool to
measure service user satisfaction. The Likert scale is commonly used to measure a person s attitudes
or behaviours, using answer choice that ranges from one end to another (Kuma Tan et al. 2007, p. 550)
(appendix 1). A Likert scale survey can identify the different levels of the service user s opinions about
the staff s cultural competence (Mellor Moore 2014, p. 369). The survey will indicate the service user

The survey will also provide insight on communication, and cultural competence.
To verify the third key indicator, a self assessment tool for staff will be implemented (Appendix 2). A

  • 2. Essay about Sherman Anti-Trust Act (Constitutional Law) To: Reader From: Re: Sherman Antitrust Act Facts John Davison Rockefeller was the founder of Standard Oil Company in 1870 and ran it until he retired in 1897. Standard Oil gained almost complete control over the oil refining market in the United States by underselling its competitors. Rockefeller and his associates owned dozens of corporations operating in just one state. The Sherman Antitrust Act was enacted on July 2nd, 1890 which prohibits activities that restrict interstate commerce and competition in the marketplace. In Standard Oil Co. v. United States, 221 U.S. 1 (U.S. 1911) Standard oil and 37 other corporations were alleged to have engaged in conspiring to restrain the trade in petroleum and monopolize the petroleum industry. The Supreme Court ruled that combining the defendants oil companies stock to be a restraint of trade and an attempt to monopolize the oil industry and maintain dominance and therefore a violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act. Furthermore, in Standard Oil Co., the Supreme Court stated that The term monopoly, ... as used in the Sherman Act was intended to cover such monopolies or attempts to monopolize as were known to exist in this country; those which were defined as illegal at common law by the States, when applied to intrastate commerce. The Supreme Court went on to further state that the principles of the common law applied to interstate as well as to intrastate commerce. • 3. College Debt And Student Completion And Attendance Thalia Arreola Cynthia Burns English 102 20 April 2015 College Debt and Student Completion and Attendance In mid 2010 higher education debt surpassed credit card debt at $830 billon dollars(Clemmitt 877 900). Debt has become an increasing problem for students who want to attend college. As more students try to further their education, tuition rises and so does the amount of loans taken out each year. According to Belkin, Students attending public four year institutions this academic year are paying an average of $12,620, up $220 from last year, for tuition, room and board, meaning that tuition is only growing not decreasing from previous years(Belkin n.p.). Many people debate over whether they should attend college and be in debt or if they should get a job somewhere that allows them to live a comfortable life debt free. Two thirds of college graduates have to take out loans in order to get through college(Dwyer, McCloud, Hodson 1133 1155). Many people question, Does rising college debt limit who attends and completes college? , while many people have different opinions on this particular subject, I believe that it depends on the student and their situation if college debt limits who attends and completes college because it depends on their financial stability, it depends on if they are borrowing the right amount and it depends on if their degree provides them with the means to pay back their loans, however, many people would disagree with me and say that yes, college ... Graffiti is more destructive, they use aerosol, hard to read and they usually do it at night. Street art use different mode of paintings, they do it in broad daylight and it is more acceptable by the community. The artist are treated differently depending on the type of art they are showing. If the art is more acceptable by the people around, then they are praised by their work. Usually the defining factor on whether or not Graffiti art is considered legal is based on permission. This is not a universal rule and every city will have its own process for determining where and what type of Graffiti art is acceptable. There is a basic idea or feeling that a highly tagged neighborhood has been overrun by criminals or street gangs or that it is simply an area of a city that is not worth caring about. Arts is very powerful tool that can change the way we view towards our society and it is more powerful than words itself; it gives us a sense of awareness, it affect our way of thinking by sending us messages that we never thought before and it is more often used as a political commentary. In almost all of John Hughes movies they are based on teenagers and these films impress many. The Breakfast Club is a comedy drama film, which is remembered to be one of the best movies of all time and I agree. The acting, theme hidden within the movie, and plot make it the most prime film ever. How To Write An Essay About Kendrick Lamar Concert Review: Kendrick Lamar To begin I d like to mention that I love Kendrick Lamar; to me he is a lyrical genius especially in an era where rap has changed to an even more violent tone. Hip hop seemed to need Kendrick Lamar and as we can tell his positive influence is spreading across the nation as he recently won a Grammy topping even more known rappers such as drake. • 8. The Decline Of Native American And Inupiat Culture The American government and society has played a substantial role in the decline of both the Native American and Inupiat culture. They created inhumane boarding schools and oppressing laws that inhibited those of a different culture from being themselves and partook in the urbanization of cultured communities. The following practices need to be stopped and never forgotten so that such ethnocide doesn t happen again. Boarding schools were an issue that plagued both Native Americans and Inupiats. As conveyed by the writings of Mary Crow Dog and other Native American figures, we see how the effects of such schools were devastating to the native population. Boarding schools wiped Natives of their language and culture, teaching young children to be ashamed of what makes them unique. Pupils would return from their long stays at boarding schools, unable to speak to their own family, resulting in an isolation between themselves and their community. Over the years, generations would eventually lose most of what makes them native and, for the most part, their culture slowly faded away. It seems that the Inupiat people faced a similar fate. Inupiat children were forced to learn by Western standards, eventually forgetting their crucial survival skills, language, religion and other unique aspects of their culture. However, we are exposed to a more positive outlook towards boarding schools in the book, Fifty Miles from Tomorrow, where William Hensley says he enjoyed his boarding school ... An Investigation into How the British could have achieved victory in the American War of Independence The American War of Independence was perhaps the first colonial war of independence during the period of European dominance across the globe. Great Britain, a relatively new country with a stable, democratic government, established an enormous trading empire which stretched from North America to East India and was the greatest superpower on Earth. It came to be so, firstly by its highly effective navy which allowed it to transport goods and defeat other rival fleets. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is believed she gave word to Paul Revere that the British were planning on destroying the armouries at Lexington and Concord and thus he spread the famous line of The British are coming! Many British Generals serving throughout the French Indian War began to sympathize with the colonists who fought alongside the British. This meant that many of the experienced and greatest of British Generals, including Gage himself, did not believe that war was the right option and did not believe in the British cause. So to prevent the catastrophes that Gage caused during the first months of the War, the British should have given the position to a General who was both capable but also sensible. Historians believe that if General Charles Cornwallis had of served in his stead then the early British disasters could have been avoided and the colonists would have been crushed in the first few months. Cornwallis was a competent commander, but when he inherited his Lordship, he often voted against heavy taxation of the colonies. Many blame him for the British defeat of the War because of his surrender at Yorktown but with his intervention at an earlier date, such a competent commander could have increased the odds of the British winning the war. • 14. The Coca Plant And The Physical Effects Of The Coca Plant Coca is native to western South American is one of only four cultivated plants in the Erthroxylacease family. The plant is grown in mass in the following six: countries Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru; however, it is illegal to cultivate the crop in these countries. (Figure 1) The crop flourishes in warm climates and usually under the direction of a large Drug Cartel. The coca plant has been a traditional stimulant similar to coffee in many Andean cultures. (Stolberg, 2011) The alkaloid content of coca leaves is relatively low, between 0.25% and 0.77%. (Juan C. Negrete, 1978). Since the coca plant has been around for thousands of years, it s important to understand the history of the plant and how it has been used. With medical science advancement it is also essential we understand and track the physical effects of the plant has on the human body. Finally, we must take into account what the medical field is reporting with regard to the Coca plant. History of the Coca Plant As archeologist study mummies remains they continue to find traces of coca leaves extract within the bodies and have recorded as far back at 3000 years ago. Coca was used for millennia by indigenous people of the New World das a general stimulate as well as for medical and other varied purposes. (Stolberg, 2011) Archeologist have found evidence that coca was used in the Andean region of South America and some parts of Central America. The key evidence they are relying on are small ceramic lime containers which have traces of coca leaves and follow wall stories showing what looks like chewing of the leaves. Samples of these bowls have been excavated and are on display in many museums. Coca chewing may originally have been limited to the eastern Andes before its introduction to the Inca. (Stolberg, 2011) During the Inca rule, it was known that coca was for the elite such as the priest. One more example of social status throughout history and separation of classes . This paper will discuss Massachusett s present and past history during the time of the Revolutionary War; as well as the causes of the war, Sons of Liberty, and important battles. Boston was where the action began. It began with taxes being raised, acts being made, such as the Stamp act. They were upset because legislature was taxing the Americans without a representative for the people(Bomboy). British forces arriving was another cause. Then, the Boston Tea Party and the Boston Massacre occurred. Key figures and leaders came forward, such as Paul Revere, Samuel Adams, and John Hancock and they started calling for action(Sword She Seeks Under Liberty). Meanwhile in Worcester, political control was with the Americans, but the court was under control of the British. The British were attempting to regain control by marching on the courthouse where the citizens were gathered. The citizens held the British forces back but later were afraid that without protecting the courthouse at night, the British would take control of the courthouse, then take their tools, livestock, or farms as punishment and this sent people into more disarray. Tensions were escalating between people, so reasonable patriots called for a meeting of several counties that were involved in this. • 16. Commedia Dell Arte and Influences on Modern Theatre Commedia dell Arte is an interesting form of acting in the history of theatre. During the 16th, 17th and 18th century, in the midst of the renaissance, there was a very delightful source of entertainment that people where privy too. This archaic form of acting was based around improvising and the use of masks. I am comparing this to modern day comedy since I have seen direct examples on television, which use this method of acting, in modern day shows. The fact that some of these performers were verging on genius is without dispute. Contemporary performers have looked into the past finding resourceful techniques to further illustrate comedy to their peers. The first question is why use Commedia Dell Arte as a training tool for modern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fusing together these elements, a mask maker produces a shape that is no longer purely human. Hence, if a human wears this mask, there are discrepancies between mask and body, which counteract each other s expressiveness. It becomes necessary, therefore, for the human to adjust his or her body shape to fit the mask. The design and style that comes from the three elements of mask design allow the actor at any point to move into animal movement, devilishly bad behavior or simply carry out the order of the plot in role. This juncture is an ideal place to start feeding specific instances of the characters body language. Those who are capable of exploring attitudes, energy levels, and their own inner resources can be guided through that process. Those who need more encouragement, and have not yet learned to trust the passion for discovery or their own emotions can be given more hard concrete information to work with. The middle path must be looked for, and in this there is the whole tradition of the commedia dell arte to help. A character survives on stage because it is alive. One of the problems any performer or actor faces is selecting his or her material. In traditional Commedia Dell Arte, this is key to success, and is needed on a moment to moment basis. • 20. Personification And Symbolism In The Raven By Edgar Allen Poe The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe, is a poem in which the narrator is in a spell of depression likely due to the sudden and tragic death of his lover. Within the first few lines, it becomes apparent that he is missing somebody, when he says Lenore constantly while waiting at the door. As his wait comes to an end, he begins to hear a similar tapping sound coming from his window, once he opens the window a raven comes into his room. It is here that the narrator begins to ask the raven questions, for which he will only receive the same answer and in return increase his frustration. Apart from the apparent frustration and depression of the narrator, there are two key literary devices of the poem that play a significant role in the revealing of themes. The first is personification, which is the act of giving inanimate items human traits, such as crying and laughing. Then comes symbolism, which can be referred to as using a tangible object to represent something else. In The Raven , Poe uses personification and symbolism to explore how humans can bring misery upon themselves. Throughout the poem, personification occurs at various points and helps intensify the dark and haunting atmosphere, which seems to be growing around the narrator. For instance, in the second stanza the narrator says, And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor. This is an example of personification solely because ghosts are usually formed by anything that was alive, whereas an ember is a mere inanimate object bound to last only a couple of minutes to a couple of hours. Other than the example of a dying ember in stanza two, there is yet another example of personification in the second stanza. And that example being, This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, Lenore! For something to murmur, it must have a voice and within the room there was no one else besides the narrator. Although there was no other human besides the narrator in the room, there was the raven who was still outside, which in return increased the overall spookiness of the room. For it could ve been the raven who murmured. Upon hearing Lenore the depressed lover lost his somewhat stable state of mind. In addition to these two examples ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Case For Investment Into Art And The Development Of... 2.1 Art Index and Methodology The case for investment into art and the development of art indices has been at the forefront of the evolution of investing into alternative assets. Databases, indices, and market reports are now essential analytical tools with which art investors can assess financial performance. Over the past few decades, researchers have used different methodologies to calculate the financial returns on art investments, based on public auction records. 2.1.1 General Review There are four main methodologies for producing art price indices. Average prices, geometric means, repeat sales and hedonic regressions. The first significant study was by Stein (1977), who analyzes the financial return of auctioned paintings in USA and Britain for the period of 1946 68 by using the average prices methods. Stein considered the auctioned objects each year as a random sample of the underlying stock of art and constructs an index based on the yearly average transaction price. Baumol (1986) and Frey and Pommerehne (1989) calculate the geometric mean return on works that sold at least twice during the considered time frame. Baumol constructs a data set of transaction prices of the best known art works from 1652 to 1961 in London by using geometric mean method. Revisiting Baumol s study, Frey and Pommerehne enlarge the data set by extending the time period to 1987 and including auction sales from European countries. Parents have a right to be in charge of what is put into the minds of their students, however just because one parent objects does not mean that the whole school should ban the book from the list. A solution for this book would be to enforce parental consent for books to be read in the classroom. If a parent does not want a book to be read in the classroom, then there should be other options for the student to read. • 34. Human Life In Thornton Wilder s Play Our Town Thornton Wilder s play, Our Town, outlines the lives of two families realistically from 1901 to 1913. Multiple themes are presented through the lives of these families in three separate acts: Daily Life , Love and Marriage , and Death and Eternity . Although each act entails different commonly faced problems and themes, the play does not lack a central, universal theme. Each act contributes to a main theme about human life that, even after 81 years, is still relevant to society today. The main theme of the play, Our Town, is that human life is repetitive and temporary. The repetition of daily life can mainly be found in Acts I and II, where the Gibbes, Webbs, and other characters continually do the same thing everyday. The first act, Daily Life , begins with Howie Newsome, deliverin the milk (Wilder 10) to the Webb and Gibbs families.
