Peer Couseling Refleciton Paper
Coming from prior experience of having to go to counseling as a teenager, being a client in a peer
counseling was acceptable and familiar. The experience within the session in class was sufficient
enough to help deal with a particular problem I had been going through and wanted to search for a
possible resolution or change towards the problem for the near future. Though I did not know the
helper personally, I had known the helper through another sports team, and being friends within the
class helped with being comfortable talking about an issue within my own respective sport. Going into
the session being both athletes at the University of Maryland was comforting due to understanding
where we both were coming from. The helper concentrated working through each of the different
skills through the 3 stage model learned throughout the entire semester to help with my particular
issue within the training staff. I noticed her help and focus of wanting to guide through my initial
emotions of the situation, moving towards providing advice and insight about the problem, and lastly
providing possible recommendations and solutions towards confronting the issue at hand. It felt good
and promising receiving possible solutions on how to work through the problem for any future issues
relating towards the initial problem. Listening to the helper coming from a different perspective on the
issue helped see from a new perspective outside my own opinions about the problem and
understanding the

A Vast And Complex Subway System Into Causeway Bay
You are stepping out of the MTR a vast and complex subway system into Causeway Bay, a shopping
square usually filled with commuters and tourists. Normally filled with shoppers and commuters,
thousands are now standing in the middle of the street blocking oncoming traffic. People stay in tents
overnight occupying the square, shouting, and rallying around a common belief. Democracy. They are
protesting against China s government who had promised them democracy and haven t given it.
Suddenly police show up and order them to disband; they refuse. After hours of standoff, the police
pull out their sticks and their tear gas and attack. Peaceful protesters are arrested and scattered. Every
two years I walk these very streets. We visit family, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From watching the news and looking at social media I know the gist of what happened. I know that
the people were protesting China, who was appointing the nominees for their leader when the people
wanted to pick the nominees for themselves and believed that it was promised to them by China in
their agreement after buying them back by Great Britain. After weeks of protest, police started getting
violent, using tear gas, and sticks, as well as arresting the protesters. From the point of view of the
people of Hong Kong, China was oppressing the people and breaking the deal they had with them.
Watching both Chinese and American news channels, many people side with the protesters and that is
likely due to the fact that they also have prior biases. I wish to learn more about both sides and be able
to objectively decide who was at fault, who crossed the line, and ultimately do the people have a right
to protest? I want to answer questions like What was the deal made between the two places? Was
China being too harsh on the people? Was a compromise possible and ultimately, what was the
outcome of the protests? I believe that my research process will go well because these protests were
very well reported and discussed. The sources I hope to use are sources such as new articles,
interviews, and primary sources.

Gustav Mahler Essay
Mahler was born in Kalischt, Bohemia, on July 7, 1860. At the time, Bohemia (later to form a major
component of Czechoslovakia, and later the Czech Republic) was part of the Austro Hungarian
empire, then enduring its final crumbling decades, and the region where Mahler spent his youth was
strongly associate with the Czech independence movement. However, Mahler also was a Jew, and
Jews in the region were associated by ethnic Czechs with Germans. Mahler famous quote is: quot;I am
thrice homeless, as a native of Bohemia in Austria, as an Austrian among Germans, and as a Jew
throughout the world. Everywhere an intruder, never welcomed. quot; Then add to that the fact that
the public considered Mahler to be a gifted conductor with a habit of ... Show more content on

He also ruled with an iron fist, helping create the image of conductor as dictator. This was not,
however, the result of simple ego, but rather of Mahler s artistic honesty and desire. When members of
the opera orchestra complained that one or another lazy practice was tradition, Mahler s favorite reply
was that quot;[t]radition is laziness. quot; Mahler believed that opera was the highest form of art, not
mere entertainment. A classic example is when Mahler decided to give the Vienna premiere of
Charpentier s Louise. Charpentier came to the dress rehearsal and criticized the sets, the costumes and
Mahler s conducting. Mahler s reaction was to cancel the premier and redo the costumes and set to
Charpentier s specifications and studied the score with the composer so that his conducting, too,
would be to Charpentier s satisfaction.
Another demonstrative incident during his leadership of the Vienna Opera was his attempts to present
Richard Strauss opera, Salome. Mahler was a basically prudish man, and his wife, Alma Mahler, later
stated that he had argued against Strauss setting Wilde s Salome. Strauss, of course, went ahead and
composed the piece, submitted it for production by the Vienna Opera, and was informed that the
Censorship Board had banned the work due to Strauss references to Christ

Capital vs Liquidity
Liquidity, liquidity, liquidity.....
In the context of the events of the last few years just how important is liquidity to the survival and
well being of Financial Institutions? Some believe it has a greater influence on events than Capital!
Discuss. (In this assignment you need to outline the role of liquidity, issues arising when liquidity is
scarce and compare the role of liquidity to that of Capital but most importantly give your own view on
these matters)
Role of Liquidity
Liquidity can be defined as 1) the ability of a business to meet obligations without disposing of its
fixed assets or 2) the degree to which assets of a company can be easily converted into cash.

Typical assets that can be sold this way are mortgages, credit card debt, car loans or student debt. This
model was used by Northern Rock (NR) in the UK where they originated mortgages that were then
securitised. This enabled them to churn their balance sheet and issue more mortgages. There was an
inherent liquidity risk run by NR with this model as their funding was not diversified sufficiently
aligned with a failure to realise that market conditions for mortgage backed securities (MBS) would
deteriorate in stressed markets. Between issuing a mortgage and securitising it, there will always be a
time lag and to cover that NR relied on wholesale interbank funding in the short dates (up to 3
months). This source quickly disappeared as banks pulled any limits. The building society had then to
go to their lender of last resort, the Bank of England, and with that news hitting the headlines, ordinary
depositors queued up outside branches to get their own money out. This was the first run on a UK
bank in 150 years. Eventually NR was taken over by the state. In the context of this case it s
interesting to note that the run was caused by what I would consider over transparency . The Bank of
England had a rule that obliged them to publish the names of institutions that used its liquidity support
facility and allied with a lack of satisfactory deposit insurance their depositors took their money and
ran. Maybe the rule is not so suitable in

The Age Of Turbulence By Alan Greenspan
After reading The Age of Turbulence by Alan Greenspan, the memoir truly shows the significance of
our economy in the United States. Alan Greenspan, who spent eighteen years as the chairman of the
Federal Reserve, showed great efforts to assure that America didn t experience an economic disaster.
Predicting the economic downturn that became the 1958 recession was my first forecast of the
economy as a whole (47 Greenspan). His mindset was constantly full of ideas that would make the
economy more stimulated. Greenspan explains the history he has in government, other economic
systems, and world issues that greatly affect the economy. He also made sure the rest of the world
would grow in a way to make more opportunities for all. His main ... Show more content on

The Federal Reserve has many jobs to accomplish such as moderating long term interest rates to
increase investment. When the economy is performing strongly, the Feds will raise interest rates in
order to slow down the economy. This may sound like a bad idea, but in reality it must be done to
ensure that our economy stays in equilibrium. We do not want our economy doing too well but we do
not want it doing too poorly either. When the Feds change the interest rates the banks that borrow
money from the Fed get directly affected because the loaning price of the money either lowers or rises
in response to the interest rates. On the other hand, when the Fed lowers interest rates, it means the
economy is performing poorly. Lowering interest rates makes money more accessible for the banks to
borrow. When the Fed tightens, the stock market tends to not perform well. While the Fed had no
explicit mandate to focus on the stock market, the effects of the run up in prices seemed to me a
legitimate concern (175 Greenspan). To explain, higher interest rates creates a lower demand for
stocks, causing stock prices to fall. Lower interest rates creates a higher demand for stocks, causing
stock prices to rise. When the demand for stocks fall, the demand for bonds will increase. Interest rates
and bond prices are inversely related. This means that when interest rates rise, the demand for bonds
fall. Alan Greenspan had a significant contribution to why our economy is the way it is

Rhetorical Communication: A Theory of Civil Discourse
July 7th, 2015
Rhetorical Discourse in Two Distinct Pieces of Work; Abraham Lincoln s Second Inaugural Address
Emily Dickinson s Success is Counted Sweetest Rhetoric is often denoted to as the art of persuasion.
A set of linguistic traits and semantics used to evoke emotional responses from its intended audience,
opening the floor for unanticipated influence by said audience. It would be an atrocity to ignore the
efforts behind this simple yet powerful manipulation. This is referred to as rhetorical discourse.
Essentially, there are six characteristics of rhetorical discourse, these characteristics being; rhetoric is
planned, adapted to an audience, shaped by human motives, responsive to a situation, seeks
persuasion, and is concerned with contingent issues (Herrick 8). Further, each of the characteristics
lends itself to support the social functions of rhetoric; testing ideas, assisting advocacy, distributing
power, unearthing facts, shaping knowledge, and building communities (Herrick 15). It is with these
sentiments in which one compares the rhetorical discourse used in both former President Abraham
Lincoln s Second Inaugural address, and Emily Dickinson s Success is Counted Sweetest. Here the
characteristics of rhetorical discourse will be used as a guide for the differences in these two pieces of
work. Though both are essentially about the civil war, they share great

Blaiming the Paparazzi
In 1997, Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris, which was blamed on the paparazzi that were
chasing her. Because the accident happened in France, no British charges can be laid against the
photographers. However, nine were charged with manslaughter in France, but the charges were thrown
out in 2002. Three photographers Jacques Langevin, Christian Martinez and Fabrice Chassery were
convicted of invasion of privacy for taking pictures of Princess Diana and were each fined one euro in
2006. Of course it is obvious that the public is intensely curious to know more about celebrities, but
don t you think celebrities have the right to be private?
First of all, let us define who the paparazzi are and what they do for a living. A paparazzo is a
photographer who takes pictures of athletes, actors, celebrities, politicians etc... on a daily basis. As a
matter of fact, paparazzi s tend to chase celebrities wherever they go. Whether it was to the Academy
Awards, shopping at a mall, or even going to the gym. Nowadays the paparazzi are going way beyond
the limits and are becoming more likely bizarre. They are competing against each other and are trying
to have the best exposed pictures of celebrities they could get at any cost. They don t care if they hurt
or stress celebrities. They simply want to be the best.
California s first civil anti paparazzi law was signed on January 1st, 1999. This law protects celebrities
from physical invasions and trespassing. This law wasn t enough, so on

The Importance Of Alexander Hamilton And George Washington
Alexander Hamilton and George Washington had a strong relationship from 1776 to 1801. The two
first met in 1777 when Hamilton, then a twenty two year old artillery officer, joined Washington s staff
as his secretary. After the war, they built a strong relationship when Hamilton was Secretary of the
Treasury for 8 years in the Washington Administration. Some have argued Washington was more
important in bringing stability to the U.S. due to his leadership both during the War and in his time as
President of the United States. However, Hamilton s role in the Constitutional Convention was
essential to ratification of the Constitution and establishing a strong centralized government. In
addition, Hamilton was the Secretary of Treasury for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hamilton believed the federal government had to play a much stronger role in the establishment of a
national economic system. With the creation of institutions including a national bank and a national
mint, Hamilton sought to establish a system to allow a free flow of commerce within the United States
and with foreign countries. As illustrated throughout Hamilton s Financial Plan, The American
economy had traditionally rested upon large scale agricultural exports to pay for the import of British
manufactured goods. Hamilton rightly thought that this dependence on expensive foreign goods kept
the American economy at a limited level, especially when compared to the rapid growth of early
industrialization in Great Britain. this shows hamilton was effective in forming great stability in the
united states economically.
Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay published the Federalist Papers a series of 85 essays on
October 27, 1787 to urge the citizens of United States to ratify the Constitution. Hamilton gave a
speech on June 18, 1777 during the time period of the constitutional convention Hamilton gave a six
hour speech otherwise known as Hamilton Day . Hamilton demonstrated what it took to form a strong
centralized government, Talks for six hours! The convention is listless! this revealed Hamilton wanted
nothing more than a strong centralized government and was willing to speak

The Importance Of Equal Pay For Equal Work
Despite the numerous benefits society reaps from equal pay for equal work , there is still a prevalent
gender inequality that persists. Research indicates that Australia s female senior executives earn
drastically less money than their male co workers across all types of pay, not just performance based
(Hutchinson et al. 2015, p. 785). It was found that executives who were female, represented 8.2 per
cent of the study sample, earnt approximately 22.58 per cent less in base salary compared to men
during the same sample period (Hutchinson et al. 2015, p. 787). Furthermore, if executives were
granted performance based pay, women were awarded roughly 16.26 per cent less in cash bonus and
18.21 per cent less in long term incentive pay (Hutchinson et al. 2015, p. 783). Provided women are
awarded less money in all forms of compensation, the idea of women breaking the class ceiling is a
difficult task that seems unobtainable to most. In such circumstances despite entering the workforce,
women may experience reduced motivation to seek management or board positions due to the
extended effort they have to provide over men.
Important gender differences still influence numerous labour market outcomes and possibilities (Farre,
2016). Women s discontinuous labour market participation is a major contributor to gender inequality
within the labour force (Arnarson Aparna, 2010). Women are often forced to exit the labour market for
an extended duration of time due to many reasons such

Ichabod Crane and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Essay
There are many facets that can either make or break someone as a hero . In literature, a hero does not
necessarily have to be a knight in shining armor, a caped crusader, or an exact replica of the archetype
but, there are certain qualities and expectations that determine what makes a hero. A typical hero has
strength, appeal, courage, righteousness, and success, meaning that they have the physical and mental
capabilities that can lead them to eventually achieve their goals. In most cases, the protagonist of a
story is the hero, but this is not true in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. Set in
Sleepy Hollow, the story chronicles schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane s, time and sudden disappearance
from the haunted town. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In preparation for the party at the Van Tassel mansion, Ichabod takes extra time to get ready, wears his
best clothes, and even borrows a horse in order to attempt a noble and valiant façade. But, Ichabod s
foolish and strange appearance can never be disguised. Not only was the broken down horse a pathetic
sight to be seen, but Ichabod s clumsily large stature overtook it in the most ridiculous of ways. He
rode with short stirrups, which brought his knees nearly up to the pommel of the saddle; his sharp
elbows stuck out like grasshoppers ...and, as his horse jogged on, the motion of his arms was not
unlike the flapping of a pair of wings (Irving 5). There is nothing glorious or particularly attractive
about Ichabod s physical presence, which is the initial indication of his incompetence to fulfill the role
of hero. His physical appearance exudes weakness and vulnerability, and it should not come as a
surprise that his personality matches his anti heroic appearance.
Any type of hero should be courageous and generally caring of others, but Ichabod Crane is neither of
these things. Ichabod...knew two emotions, and two only. His were fear, and ambition (Hoffman). He
is extremely cowardly in many aspects and the ambition comes from his overwhelming and
extravagant greed. Ichabod is

Critical Reading Sat Practice Questions
Critical Reading SAT Practice Questions Questions 1 3 are based on the following passage. In 1939 at
the New York World s Fair, the most popularly visited exhibit, entitled Futurama, depicted the future
as a world shaped by the automobile. In this version of the future, fourteen lane superhighways
intersected 5 cities, citizens walked along sidewalks built above roads and parking lots, and parks
rested atop skyscrapers, far from the bustle and the noise of the streets below. Many city planners saw
this integration of the automobile with everyday life as an essential mark of progress. 10 By the end of
the 1950s, that fantasy of the future had become, in many ways, a reality. Eighty percent of American
families owned at least one car, and fourteen percent owned two or more. Additionally, the highways
that connected the nation s cities to its suburbs crisscrossed every state in the union and transported
millions of people and billions of dollars in consumer goods. 1. The word integration (line 8), most
nearly means a. achievement b. continuity c. exclusion d. combination e. interruption 2. According to
the passage, the fantasy of the future (line 10) had become a reality through all of the following

The Mexican President Porfirio Diaz
It is said that those who don t know their history are bound repeat itself and it is the case of present
day Mexico. Mexico is a wonderful country with so much potential: rich in minerals, full of culture
and traditions, with beautiful sceneries and landscapes perfect for tourism. However, it has not seen
peace or stability in the last century. Currently there is a war in Mexico between several parties
including the government and several drug cartels. Everyone involved is hungry for money and power.
Similarly in 1910 the Mexican revolution which began because the country was filled with violence
and suffering causing many people to flee the country in search for a safer place. All of this is due to
poor leadership, corruption, and poverty. In 1910 the Mexican President Porfirio Diaz was taking
advantage of his power and taking all he could away from the indigenous people of the country. Diaz
acted like a dictator during his term; he would take away the land of the poor and gave it away to
wealthier Mexican citizens. That way Diaz helped the wealthy Mexicans become wealthier and the
poor became poorer. This abuse of power enraged the people and as a result Francisco Madero,
Emiliano Zapata, and Pancho Villa started a revolution with the goal of taking the presidency from
Diaz. This became the start of the Mexican revolution that developed into a civil war between the
government and the revolutionaries. The war had many casualties and most of the country lived in
fear.

What Is The Epilogue To Fodo s Hobbit
There once lived a hobbit Frodo Baggins, who lived in a beautiful hobbit hole in the Shire. Frodo was
a peaceful hobbit at the time, but not for long...
Many years ago, he helped destroy Mordor, a great and powerful realm with millions of orcs. At that
time, Frodo was a ring bearer, and fought through all of Mordor s challenges, barely making it out
alive. His journey was to travel to Mount Doom, and drop the Ring of Power into the mountain s lava.
The ring obtained immense power, and brought turmoil to all of Middle Earth. The only way to ensure
the safety of the people, was to destroy the ring for good. Frodo was successful, and saved all of the
living things in the world.
When Frodo arrived back to the Shire, a year later, he was at peace.

Carl Roe s Theory Of Persuasive Essay
Carl Woese s Vision
There have been many diverse and important discoveries found. One person by the name of Carl
Woese published a couple of articles, expressing his thoughts on the controversy of evolutionary
biology. Carl Woese is a well renowned founder of Phylogenetics, creator of the ribosomal Tree of
Life, and the discovery of the Archaea. Carl Woese s theory about evolution traits of microbes is
thought to be reoccurring in this generation. The Author of this Article; Eugene V Koonin, believes in
Carl Woese s theory. Koonin s main point in this article is to prove that Carl Woese s theory is a way

Characteristics Affecting The Choice Of Road Carriers...
1. INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this assignment is to study the characteristics affecting the choice of road carriers
based on discrete choice. Different road carriers have different economic characteristics and are
consistent with its competition, shippers and carriers have different preferences when deciding on the
choice of road carrier. Currently, a surplus and scarcity of different transport infrastructures can be
seen in South Africa and various other developed and developing countries. Large communal
infrastructure which includes railways, airports, and seaports, cannot meet current freight demands.
Road transport in the form of highways offers surplus capacity for freight transport. Significantly very
little to no research has been done on road freight demand models compared to other modes of
transportation. The main cause for this is the absence of current and relevant freight demand data.
Freight demand data is an expensive and tedious process to obtain. In South Africa, freight is
progressively more transported by means of road; this results in a large variation of negative
philosophies, external effects including congestion, different types of pollution, and accidents. This
has led to public authorities attempting to reduce the road freight predominance.
2. TRANSPORTATION AND FREIGHT DEMAND CHARACTERISTICS
2.1 Transportation can be grouped into two transportation forms: This includes private transportation
and public transportation.

episode about a shooting that had occurred nearby involving the father of Aiyana and a teenager
named Je Rean Blake (who had been shot and killed). The cameras were outside the little girls home
and SWAT team that was trying to get into the home ended up throwing in a grenade through the
window and landing nearby Aiyana. Then the lead commander, Officer Joseph Weekley shot his gun
and Aiyana was killed. The SPJ code of ethics were clearly broken many times throughout the
reporting of this story on The First 48. Minimizing harm is one of the main sections of the SPJ ethics
code and is the category that was very much broken by the reporters on this case.
The SPJ code of ethics state, Balance the public s need for information against potential harm or

Desai very carefully handles the themes of racial discrimination, migration ,political turmoil and class
discrimination. The novel provides us with some of the historical facts and the beautiful imagery
which makes us familiar with the geographical details of Nepal. We can easily draw similarities
between the novel and a movie. Just like a movie the novel deals with many characters and there is a
change in scenes within a chapter. It keeps moving back and forth in time which makes it more
interesting. The narrative techniques used by the author enhances the whole reading experience. The
novel traces the development of the characters and ends the story in positive

What Is The Story Of Jurassic Park
Jurassic Park
In Jurassic Park Hammond is the visionary and the creator and the mastermind behind the whole park.
But the story really isn t told from his perspective it is from the tourists and the scientists eyes. I
believe his intention was to show the world what life was like before. He didn t want people to be
scared or dying left and right i think he wanted people to be happy, and enjoying themselves, and also
learn at the same time! Im sure he didn t see the negative in the park but he saw the beauty about
nature and his unusual obsession with the dinosaurs. It is probably a much different perspective if the
story is through the visionary s mind.

Informative Essay On Skiing
Skiing Do you like to downhill ski? Who doesn t like a little rush of adrenaline? It feels good! Skiing
is a worldwide sport and pastime, but how much do you really know about it? My subtopics include:
the history of skiing, who skied first, and the best places to ski. Journey into the whipping wind and
flying snow to find out how and why skiing really started! Many people say that skiing originally
originated in the Atlay mountains in 8000 BC. Some say it didn t start until much later in that region
(National Geographic). The skis are very different than today s, they are closer to eight feet long and
made of wood, fur, and horse hair. They had one pole to keep their balance, not two. The skis varied in
size over the years, the largest being a huge twelve feet long and the smallest being about two and a
half feet long. The people from older times used the skis to travel faster on snow to catch animals by
catching up to them. They have greatly changed from a hunting tactic to a very exciting sport and
pastime, it has greatly evolved. But who first started it? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These places are thought to be the areas of origin because of paintings preserved in bogs and rock. The
paintings that have been found are all very different in how the skier is depicted. They range from
things that look very much like actual skiing to ones that are hard to identify but have been assumed to
be some sort of skiing. Though the origin of skiing is debated, it is no doubt that it is a popular activity

Each person has a favorite sport to play or to watch. Most of the time the favorite sport is something
related to the culture the person lives in. For example, in the U.S. the popular sports are American

soccer, soccer, soccer than other sports. To me, I really like watching and playing soccer. Sometimes I
watch two to three games a day. The main reason I like watching soccer, in particular, is the fact that it

it has simple rules and everyone can play it almost everywhere.

Persuasive Essay On Becoming A Knight
A knight is a man who served his sovereign or lord as a mounted soldier in armor. They were well
trained fighters, knights were military retainers, often of humble means, but defined by their military
vocation and their ability rather than any lineages ( Richard). They surfaced in the Middle Ages
because it was a time when Lords needed protections along with their territories. To become a knight
was not easy there were many steps towards fulfilling knighthood. Not only did it take years of
training to become a knight, but it also took bravery, courtesy, and honor known as chivalry and
courtly love. A man without those qualities did not have what it takes to play this role. Knights of the
Middle Ages were first and premier warriors who fought from horseback, wore body covering armor,
and used weapons such as swords and daggers to fight and protect in battle. There were five steps to
knighthood, becoming a knight took years of training, during which a young man learned how to fight,
ride, and behave in proper, knightley manner (Corrick 29). The first step to becoming a knight was
having the right connections because it was very expensive to buy all the equipment necessary in
protecting himself on the battlefield. That being said a knight usually came from a noble or wealthy
family. The upbringing is the second step, if a boy came from the right family and had the ambition to
be a knight by the age of seven he would have to learn all basic manners and what the role of a

Superego In A Tale Of Two Cities
In A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens, Sydney Carton and Charles Darnay look identical;
however, they develop differently throughout the novel. Throughout the entire novel, Dickens creates
Darnay as a representation of the superego, which is why Lucie chose him. To contrast, Dickens
establishes Carton as a representation of the ego. However, as the novel progresses, Dickens makes
Carton s use of ego transition from subconscious to conscious, as a result of his relationship with
Lucie and his deeper commitment to societal values. The latter was especially shown through his
sacrifice to the Guillotine, knowing it was the right thing to do. In psychological terms, the double
represents an alter ego, a part of the self split from conscious ... Show more content on

The first occurrence of such was when she fainted in the courtroom: Yet, this Mr. Carton took in more
of the details of the scene than he appeared to take in; for now, when Miss Manette s head dropped
upon her father s breast, he was the first to see it, and to say audibly: Officer! look to that young lady.
Help the gentleman to take her out. Don t you see she will fall! Carton would not have cared if another
woman had fallen, but his attraction to Lucie represents his growing morality. Sydney Carton must
discover belief before he can proceed from self analysis to meaningful activity. Lucie Manette
provides the means (Lloyd, 1992). The gist of superego is societal values and ethics. Lucie embodies
the superego fully, as shown through how she helped her father recover. In addition, Lucie had her 3
suitors because she represented the good of society. Therefore, she acts as Carton s superego.
Additionally, Carton s aforementioned condemnation of morality shows how he transitioned from
having no morality to embracing it, after falling in love with Lucie. Lastly, when Carton says, that he
would die to keep a life you love beside you, he is clearly depicting his morals since society admires
sacrifice and unselfishness. Carton s use of superego ultimately impacts the consciousness of his

Similarities Between Performances Of Music And Sport
MacNamara, Holmes and Collins (2006) state that there are numerous similarities between
performances in music and sport. Expert musicians and sports performers are more able to adapt to
setbacks than lesser skilled performers, as well as experts having higher levels of dedication and
motivation and can communicate more emotion through the pieces being played. Similarly to Chaffin
et al. (2003) this communication of emotion may be related to the artistic image with both requiring
focus and decision making. In order to become an expert performer Abbott and Collins (2004) suggest
that talent development requires the possession of Psychological Characteristics for Developing
Excellence (PCDE), which as the performer moves through the transition phases become further
developed. PCDE s are both trait characteristics and state related skills such as self belief, dedication
and discipline (Abbott and Collins, 2004). Another significant aspect of becoming an expert musician
is deliberate practice. Deliberate practice requires determination with the correct motivation for the
performer, and the necessary time and effort roughly equating to 10,000 hours (Ericsson et al., 1993).
MacNamara, Holmes and Collins (2008) state that expert musicians require numerous aspects to reach
the highest level; natural talent and/or deliberate practice combined with social context and significant
others are needed to maintain performance at this high level. As talent is developed, the performer

Themes Presented in Shakespeare s Tragic Play Romeo and...
Romeo and Juliet is one of the most famous plays in history, which is written by William Shakespeare.
This play is Shakespeare s first play about tragedy. Romeo and Juliet is a very deep and profound play
about two star crossed lovers met at a ball. Within this play Shakespeare used deep, complex language
to describe their insightful character also their actions towards each other. Romeo and Juliet is about
two lovers from families who have set a grudge upon each other, in this complex piece of art William
Shakespeare has put the protagonist within ruinous events where love is hard and where love has to be
flawless. The plot of Romeo and Juliet is as I said earlier, about two star crossed lovers met at a ball.

Then Romeo realises that he made a fatal flaw. As Romeo dies Juliet s loneliness grows over her, from
that she stabs her self with Romeo s sword and they both just lay their lifelessly. This play fits within
the tragic genre because at Elizabethan times, tragic plays had to incorporate the death of the
protagonist at the end, leaving the audience with a feeling of loss, regret and a hollow victory. In this
case the protagonists are Romeo and Juliet. The themes that are embraced within this play are mostly
arrogance, male pride, secrecy and physical violence. First of all arrogance is shown principally by
Mercutio, given in act 3 scene 1, he insults Tybalt by calling him a ratcatcher . The word ratcatcher
links in with Tybalt s name which means king of cats . He has much courage to insult the cousin of
Romeo s love; also his arrogance overpowers his mind when he tries to scare Tybalt by giving the
names of sword s moves ( passado ). To make this play fit more into the tragic genre, the arrogance
also link in with another theme that Shakespeare has put in which is male pride. this is shown by
several character but it is mainly shown by Romeo and Mercutio. As Tybalt killed Mercutio, Romeo

Corporate Social Responsibility of Levi Strauss
It is the nature of business to expand its business and increase sales. What is ethical? In my opinion
ethics are defined by what is right. Some ethics are defined by law but many must come from within
the person or business. One must realize that sometimes what might be considered unethical by law or
ethical by law might need to be revisited and thought about if the law or lack of it produces unethical
outcomes.
In doing business so many times an organization must think globally. This might be done to increase
sales and/or profits or to lower labor costs. In either case problems can occur due to ethical and
cultural barriers in global expansion. In this paper I will attempt to show some of what a global
organization and a cultural issue that affects their interactions outside the United States by identifying
and comparing some of these cultural differences.
One company that faces these cultural issues daily is Levi Strauss and Company. Levi Strauss and
Company is a large American company founder in 1853 and is well known for its denim line.
Currently Levi Strauss and Co. has operations in over 110 countries with over half of its corporate
revenues coming from outside the United States. In American history we have all heard complaints of
companies in the garment industry hiring underage employees outside the United States and poor
working conditions. Levi Strauss and Company has not been left out of these accusations.
In the United States child labor is considered

The s Quest For Meaning
Two mice, nibbling and gnawing, representing the inexorable entity, time, which exists as a constant
threat to humanity; a dark pit with death as the only certainty; a ferocious beast forbidding escape; a
single branch offering delay; a drop of honey attempting to conceal inevitable peril. The powerful
metaphor embedded in this Buddhist parable serves as the platform for Leo Tolstoy (A Confession) in
his quest for meaning. It offers a simplistic illustration of the common predicament faced by all of
mankind, to which Tolstoy and fellow thinkers, Sigmund Freud (Civilization and Its Discontents) and
C.S. Lewis (The Abolition of Man) attempt to provide a solution. Each thinker offers a unique
conclusion based upon their respective definitions of the problem and its perpetuating influences. The
thinkers focus their investigation on the authority of science, instinct, and faith. Tolstoy is distinct in
his ability to rationalize toward a purpose independent of mankind itself; he alters the circumstances
of life rather than man s capability to deal with such circumstances. Freud and Lewis confine their
respective reasonings to the continuation and progression of mankind so as to better cope with the
predicament of man. Their theories on the improvement of man and civilization serve only to extend
the torment of mankind.
Tolstoy does not hesitate to dismiss the significance of science as an answer to the predicament of
man. He quotes Solomon explaining that in much wisdom is much

The Importance Of Voter Apathy
The percentage of citizens eligible to vote but who nevertheless opt out is a growing concern in
contemporary America; as of the 2008 presidential election only 64 percent of qualified citizens voted
(Carl, 2013). Such a lack of voting has been termed voter apathy, which is defined as a phenomenon in
which citizens with the right to vote choose not to (Carl, 2013). It is common knowledge that
throughout history minority voters are most often the ones who express this indifference towards
voting in comparison to whites (Carl, 2013). Voter apathy often results from the misguided perception
that one person s vote will not make a difference. A myriad of solutions are available for the
government to implement in order to create a more efficient

Rabies In Marquez s Of Love And Other Demons
In the late 19th century there wasn t a lot known about sickness and cures so it was very likely that
people would turn to magic or religion to resolve any conflicts that presented themselves. This method
of explaining what is unknown is very common in literature through the use of magical realism; it
takes very common and realistic situation that seems to have no logical explanation, and comforts it
with words. This can also be seen in real life history; religion and magic are tools that are used to
comfort the human mind, when there is nothing else to explain the situation at hand. In relation to
Gabriel García Marquez s Of Love and Other Demons, there is little to nothing known about the
illness of rabies as well as it s cure. This lack of intellect and this misunderstanding is what prompts
the characters to blame demonic possession for a young girl s sickness. Demonic possession is a ...

  • 2. Peer Couseling Refleciton Paper Coming from prior experience of having to go to counseling as a teenager, being a client in a peer counseling was acceptable and familiar. The experience within the session in class was sufficient enough to help deal with a particular problem I had been going through and wanted to search for a possible resolution or change towards the problem for the near future. Though I did not know the helper personally, I had known the helper through another sports team, and being friends within the class helped with being comfortable talking about an issue within my own respective sport. Going into the session being both athletes at the University of Maryland was comforting due to understanding where we both were coming from. The helper concentrated working through each of the different skills through the 3 stage model learned throughout the entire semester to help with my particular issue within the training staff. I noticed her help and focus of wanting to guide through my initial emotions of the situation, moving towards providing advice and insight about the problem, and lastly providing possible recommendations and solutions towards confronting the issue at hand. It felt good and promising receiving possible solutions on how to work through the problem for any future issues relating towards the initial problem. Listening to the helper coming from a different perspective on the issue helped see from a new perspective outside my own opinions about the problem and understanding the ... A Vast And Complex Subway System Into Causeway Bay You are stepping out of the MTR a vast and complex subway system into Causeway Bay, a shopping square usually filled with commuters and tourists. Normally filled with shoppers and commuters, thousands are now standing in the middle of the street blocking oncoming traffic. People stay in tents overnight occupying the square, shouting, and rallying around a common belief. Democracy. They are protesting against China s government who had promised them democracy and haven t given it. Suddenly police show up and order them to disband; they refuse. After hours of standoff, the police pull out their sticks and their tear gas and attack. Peaceful protesters are arrested and scattered. Every two years I walk these very streets. I know that the people were protesting China, who was appointing the nominees for their leader when the people wanted to pick the nominees for themselves and believed that it was promised to them by China in their agreement after buying them back by Great Britain. After weeks of protest, police started getting violent, using tear gas, and sticks, as well as arresting the protesters. From the point of view of the people of Hong Kong, China was oppressing the people and breaking the deal they had with them. Watching both Chinese and American news channels, many people side with the protesters and that is likely due to the fact that they also have prior biases. I wish to learn more about both sides and be able to objectively decide who was at fault, who crossed the line, and ultimately do the people have a right to protest? I want to answer questions like What was the deal made between the two places? Was China being too harsh on the people? Was a compromise possible and ultimately, what was the outcome of the protests? I believe that my research process will go well because these protests were very well reported and discussed. • 4. Gustav Mahler Essay Mahler was born in Kalischt, Bohemia, on July 7, 1860. At the time, Bohemia (later to form a major component of Czechoslovakia, and later the Czech Republic) was part of the Austro Hungarian empire, then enduring its final crumbling decades, and the region where Mahler spent his youth was strongly associate with the Czech independence movement. However, Mahler also was a Jew, and Jews in the region were associated by ethnic Czechs with Germans. Mahler famous quote is: quot;I am thrice homeless, as a native of Bohemia in Austria, as an Austrian among Germans, and as a Jew throughout the world. Everywhere an intruder, never welcomed. quot; Then add to that the fact that the public considered Mahler to be a gifted conductor with a habit of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He also ruled with an iron fist, helping create the image of conductor as dictator. This was not, however, the result of simple ego, but rather of Mahler s artistic honesty and desire. When members of the opera orchestra complained that one or another lazy practice was tradition, Mahler s favorite reply was that quot;[t]radition is laziness. quot; Mahler believed that opera was the highest form of art, not mere entertainment. A classic example is when Mahler decided to give the Vienna premiere of Charpentier s Louise. Charpentier came to the dress rehearsal and criticized the sets, the costumes and Mahler s conducting. Mahler s reaction was to cancel the premier and redo the costumes and set to Charpentier s specifications and studied the score with the composer so that his conducting, too, would be to Charpentier s satisfaction. Another demonstrative incident during his leadership of the Vienna Opera was his attempts to present Richard Strauss opera, Salome. Mahler was a basically prudish man, and his wife, Alma Mahler, later stated that he had argued against Strauss setting Wilde s Salome. Strauss, of course, went ahead and composed the piece, submitted it for production by the Vienna Opera, and was informed that the Censorship Board had banned the work due to Strauss references to Christ ... • 5. Capital vs Liquidity Liquidity, liquidity, liquidity..... In the context of the events of the last few years just how important is liquidity to the survival and well being of Financial Institutions? Some believe it has a greater influence on events than Capital! Discuss. (In this assignment you need to outline the role of liquidity, issues arising when liquidity is scarce and compare the role of liquidity to that of Capital but most importantly give your own view on these matters) Role of Liquidity Liquidity can be defined as 1) the ability of a business to meet obligations without disposing of its fixed assets or 2) the degree to which assets of a company can be easily converted into cash. The evolution of banking has seen their balance sheet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Typical assets that can be sold this way are mortgages, credit card debt, car loans or student debt. This model was used by Northern Rock (NR) in the UK where they originated mortgages that were then securitised. This enabled them to churn their balance sheet and issue more mortgages. There was an inherent liquidity risk run by NR with this model as their funding was not diversified sufficiently aligned with a failure to realise that market conditions for mortgage backed securities (MBS) would deteriorate in stressed markets. Between issuing a mortgage and securitising it, there will always be a time lag and to cover that NR relied on wholesale interbank funding in the short dates (up to 3 months). This source quickly disappeared as banks pulled any limits. The building society had then to go to their lender of last resort, the Bank of England, and with that news hitting the headlines, ordinary depositors queued up outside branches to get their own money out. This was the first run on a UK bank in 150 years. Eventually NR was taken over by the state. In the context of this case it s interesting to note that the run was caused by what I would consider over transparency . The Bank of England had a rule that obliged them to publish the names of institutions that used its liquidity support facility and allied with a lack of satisfactory deposit insurance their depositors took their money and ran. Maybe the rule is not so suitable in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Age Of Turbulence By Alan Greenspan After reading The Age of Turbulence by Alan Greenspan, the memoir truly shows the significance of our economy in the United States. Alan Greenspan, who spent eighteen years as the chairman of the Federal Reserve, showed great efforts to assure that America didn t experience an economic disaster. Predicting the economic downturn that became the 1958 recession was my first forecast of the economy as a whole (47 Greenspan). His mindset was constantly full of ideas that would make the economy more stimulated. Greenspan explains the history he has in government, other economic systems, and world issues that greatly affect the economy. He also made sure the rest of the world would grow in a way to make more opportunities for all. His main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Federal Reserve has many jobs to accomplish such as moderating long term interest rates to increase investment. When the economy is performing strongly, the Feds will raise interest rates in order to slow down the economy. This may sound like a bad idea, but in reality it must be done to ensure that our economy stays in equilibrium. We do not want our economy doing too well but we do not want it doing too poorly either. When the Feds change the interest rates the banks that borrow money from the Fed get directly affected because the loaning price of the money either lowers or rises in response to the interest rates. On the other hand, when the Fed lowers interest rates, it means the economy is performing poorly. Lowering interest rates makes money more accessible for the banks to borrow. When the Fed tightens, the stock market tends to not perform well. While the Fed had no explicit mandate to focus on the stock market, the effects of the run up in prices seemed to me a legitimate concern (175 Greenspan). To explain, higher interest rates creates a lower demand for stocks, causing stock prices to fall. Lower interest rates creates a higher demand for stocks, causing stock prices to rise. When the demand for stocks fall, the demand for bonds will increase. Interest rates and bond prices are inversely related. This means that when interest rates rise, the demand for bonds fall. Alan Greenspan had a significant contribution to why our economy is the way it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Rhetorical Analysis Of Abraham Lincoln s Second Inaugural... Tiana Lanier Professor Lara Chapman Rhetorical Communication: A Theory of Civil Discourse July 7th, 2015 Rhetorical Discourse in Two Distinct Pieces of Work; Abraham Lincoln s Second Inaugural Address Emily Dickinson s Success is Counted Sweetest Rhetoric is often denoted to as the art of persuasion. A set of linguistic traits and semantics used to evoke emotional responses from its intended audience, opening the floor for unanticipated influence by said audience. It would be an atrocity to ignore the efforts behind this simple yet powerful manipulation. This is referred to as rhetorical discourse. Essentially, there are six characteristics of rhetorical discourse, these characteristics being; rhetoric is planned, adapted to an audience, shaped by human motives, responsive to a situation, seeks persuasion, and is concerned with contingent issues (Herrick 8). Further, each of the characteristics lends itself to support the social functions of rhetoric; testing ideas, assisting advocacy, distributing power, unearthing facts, shaping knowledge, and building communities (Herrick 15). It is with these sentiments in which one compares the rhetorical discourse used in both former President Abraham Lincoln s Second Inaugural address, and Emily Dickinson s Success is Counted Sweetest. Here the characteristics of rhetorical discourse will be used as a guide for the differences in these two pieces of work. Though both are essentially about the civil war, they share great ... • 8. Blaiming the Paparazzi In 1997, Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris, which was blamed on the paparazzi that were chasing her. Because the accident happened in France, no British charges can be laid against the photographers. However, nine were charged with manslaughter in France, but the charges were thrown out in 2002. Three photographers Jacques Langevin, Christian Martinez and Fabrice Chassery were convicted of invasion of privacy for taking pictures of Princess Diana and were each fined one euro in 2006. Of course it is obvious that the public is intensely curious to know more about celebrities, but don t you think celebrities have the right to be private? First of all, let us define who the paparazzi are and what they do for a living. A paparazzo is a photographer who takes pictures of athletes, actors, celebrities, politicians etc... on a daily basis. As a matter of fact, paparazzi s tend to chase celebrities wherever they go. Whether it was to the Academy Awards, shopping at a mall, or even going to the gym. Nowadays the paparazzi are going way beyond the limits and are becoming more likely bizarre. They are competing against each other and are trying to have the best exposed pictures of celebrities they could get at any cost. They don t care if they hurt or stress celebrities. They simply want to be the best. California s first civil anti paparazzi law was signed on January 1st, 1999. This law protects celebrities from physical invasions and trespassing. • 9. The Importance Of Alexander Hamilton And George Washington Alexander Hamilton and George Washington had a strong relationship from 1776 to 1801. The two first met in 1777 when Hamilton, then a twenty two year old artillery officer, joined Washington s staff as his secretary. After the war, they built a strong relationship when Hamilton was Secretary of the Treasury for 8 years in the Washington Administration. Some have argued Washington was more important in bringing stability to the U.S. due to his leadership both during the War and in his time as President of the United States. However, Hamilton s role in the Constitutional Convention was essential to ratification of the Constitution and establishing a strong centralized government. In addition, Hamilton was the Secretary of Treasury for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hamilton believed the federal government had to play a much stronger role in the establishment of a national economic system. With the creation of institutions including a national bank and a national mint, Hamilton sought to establish a system to allow a free flow of commerce within the United States and with foreign countries. As illustrated throughout Hamilton s Financial Plan, The American economy had traditionally rested upon large scale agricultural exports to pay for the import of British manufactured goods. Hamilton rightly thought that this dependence on expensive foreign goods kept the American economy at a limited level, especially when compared to the rapid growth of early industrialization in Great Britain. this shows hamilton was effective in forming great stability in the united states economically. Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay published the Federalist Papers a series of 85 essays on October 27, 1787 to urge the citizens of United States to ratify the Constitution. Hamilton gave a speech on June 18, 1777 during the time period of the constitutional convention Hamilton gave a six hour speech otherwise known as Hamilton Day . • 10. The Importance Of Equal Pay For Equal Work Despite the numerous benefits society reaps from equal pay for equal work , there is still a prevalent gender inequality that persists. Research indicates that Australia s female senior executives earn drastically less money than their male co workers across all types of pay, not just performance based (Hutchinson et al. 2015, p. 785). It was found that executives who were female, represented 8.2 per cent of the study sample, earnt approximately 22.58 per cent less in base salary compared to men during the same sample period (Hutchinson et al. 2015, p. 787). Furthermore, if executives were granted performance based pay, women were awarded roughly 16.26 per cent less in cash bonus and 18.21 per cent less in long term incentive pay (Hutchinson et al. 2015, p. 783). Provided women are awarded less money in all forms of compensation, the idea of women breaking the class ceiling is a difficult task that seems unobtainable to most. In such circumstances despite entering the workforce, women may experience reduced motivation to seek management or board positions due to the extended effort they have to provide over men. Important gender differences still influence numerous labour market outcomes and possibilities (Farre, 2016). Women s discontinuous labour market participation is a major contributor to gender inequality within the labour force (Arnarson Aparna, 2010). • 11. Ichabod Crane and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Essay There are many facets that can either make or break someone as a hero . In literature, a hero does not necessarily have to be a knight in shining armor, a caped crusader, or an exact replica of the archetype but, there are certain qualities and expectations that determine what makes a hero. A typical hero has strength, appeal, courage, righteousness, and success, meaning that they have the physical and mental capabilities that can lead them to eventually achieve their goals. In most cases, the protagonist of a story is the hero, but this is not true in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. In preparation for the party at the Van Tassel mansion, Ichabod takes extra time to get ready, wears his best clothes, and even borrows a horse in order to attempt a noble and valiant façade. But, Ichabod s foolish and strange appearance can never be disguised. Not only was the broken down horse a pathetic sight to be seen, but Ichabod s clumsily large stature overtook it in the most ridiculous of ways. He rode with short stirrups, which brought his knees nearly up to the pommel of the saddle; his sharp elbows stuck out like grasshoppers ...and, as his horse jogged on, the motion of his arms was not unlike the flapping of a pair of wings (Irving 5). There is nothing glorious or particularly attractive about Ichabod s physical presence, which is the initial indication of his incompetence to fulfill the role of hero. His physical appearance exudes weakness and vulnerability, and it should not come as a surprise that his personality matches his anti heroic appearance. Any type of hero should be courageous and generally caring of others, but Ichabod Crane is neither of these things. Ichabod...knew two emotions, and two only. His were fear, and ambition (Hoffman). In 1939 at the New York World s Fair, the most popularly visited exhibit, entitled Futurama, depicted the future as a world shaped by the automobile. In this version of the future, fourteen lane superhighways intersected 5 cities, citizens walked along sidewalks built above roads and parking lots, and parks rested atop skyscrapers, far from the bustle and the noise of the streets below. Many city planners saw this integration of the automobile with everyday life as an essential mark of progress. 10 By the end of the 1950s, that fantasy of the future had become, in many ways, a reality. Eighty percent of American families owned at least one car, and fourteen percent owned two or more. Additionally, the highways that connected the nation s cities to its suburbs crisscrossed every state in the union and transported millions of people and billions of dollars in consumer goods. 1. The word integration (line 8), most nearly means a. achievement b. continuity c. exclusion d. combination e. interruption 2. According to the passage, the fantasy of the future (line 10) had become a reality through all of the following developments EXCEPT a. the integration of the automobile into everyday life b. shifts in the work force c. increased numbers of highways and interstates d. new transport for consumer goods e. some families having two cars 3. Creating a peer to peer educational plan is also shown to encourage and empower nurses to decrease catheter use (Meddings et al., 2014). Mexico is a wonderful country with so much potential: rich in minerals, full of culture and traditions, with beautiful sceneries and landscapes perfect for tourism. However, it has not seen peace or stability in the last century. Currently there is a war in Mexico between several parties including the government and several drug cartels. Everyone involved is hungry for money and power. Similarly in 1910 the Mexican revolution which began because the country was filled with violence and suffering causing many people to flee the country in search for a safer place. All of this is due to poor leadership, corruption, and poverty. In 1910 the Mexican President Porfirio Diaz was taking advantage of his power and taking all he could away from the indigenous people of the country. Diaz acted like a dictator during his term; he would take away the land of the poor and gave it away to wealthier Mexican citizens. That way Diaz helped the wealthy Mexicans become wealthier and the poor became poorer. This abuse of power enraged the people and as a result Francisco Madero, Emiliano Zapata, and Pancho Villa started a revolution with the goal of taking the presidency from Diaz. This became the start of the Mexican revolution that developed into a civil war between the government and the revolutionaries. The war had many casualties and most of the country lived in fear. ... INTRODUCTION The purpose of this assignment is to study the characteristics affecting the choice of road carriers based on discrete choice. Different road carriers have different economic characteristics and are consistent with its competition, shippers and carriers have different preferences when deciding on the choice of road carrier. Currently, a surplus and scarcity of different transport infrastructures can be seen in South Africa and various other developed and developing countries. Large communal infrastructure which includes railways, airports, and seaports, cannot meet current freight demands. Road transport in the form of highways offers surplus capacity for freight transport. Significantly very little to no research has been done on road freight demand models compared to other modes of transportation. The main cause for this is the absence of current and relevant freight demand data. Freight demand data is an expensive and tedious process to obtain. In South Africa, freight is progressively more transported by means of road; this results in a large variation of negative philosophies, external effects including congestion, different types of pollution, and accidents. This has led to public authorities attempting to reduce the road freight predominance. 2. TRANSPORTATION AND FREIGHT DEMAND CHARACTERISTICS 2.1 Transportation can be grouped into two transportation forms: This includes private transportation and public transportation. 2.1.1 Public ... • 26. Persuasive Essay On Becoming A Knight A knight is a man who served his sovereign or lord as a mounted soldier in armor. They were well trained fighters, knights were military retainers, often of humble means, but defined by their military vocation and their ability rather than any lineages ( Richard). They surfaced in the Middle Ages because it was a time when Lords needed protections along with their territories. To become a knight was not easy there were many steps towards fulfilling knighthood. Not only did it take years of training to become a knight, but it also took bravery, courtesy, and honor known as chivalry and courtly love. A man without those qualities did not have what it takes to play this role. Knights of the Middle Ages were first and premier warriors who fought from horseback, wore body covering armor, and used weapons such as swords and daggers to fight and protect in battle. There were five steps to knighthood, becoming a knight took years of training, during which a young man learned how to fight, ride, and behave in proper, knightley manner (Corrick 29). The first step to becoming a knight was having the right connections because it was very expensive to buy all the equipment necessary in protecting himself on the battlefield. That being said a knight usually came from a noble or wealthy family. The upbringing is the second step, if a boy came from the right family and had the ambition to be a knight by the age of seven he would have to learn all basic manners and what the role of a ... • 28. Similarities Between Performances Of Music And Sport MacNamara, Holmes and Collins (2006) state that there are numerous similarities between performances in music and sport. Expert musicians and sports performers are more able to adapt to setbacks than lesser skilled performers, as well as experts having higher levels of dedication and motivation and can communicate more emotion through the pieces being played. Similarly to Chaffin et al. (2003) this communication of emotion may be related to the artistic image with both requiring focus and decision making. In order to become an expert performer Abbott and Collins (2004) suggest that talent development requires the possession of Psychological Characteristics for Developing Excellence (PCDE), which as the performer moves through the transition phases become further developed. PCDE s are both trait characteristics and state related skills such as self belief, dedication and discipline (Abbott and Collins, 2004). Another significant aspect of becoming an expert musician is deliberate practice. Deliberate practice requires determination with the correct motivation for the performer, and the necessary time and effort roughly equating to 10,000 hours (Ericsson et al., 1993). In this case the protagonists are Romeo and Juliet. The themes that are embraced within this play are mostly arrogance, male pride, secrecy and physical violence. First of all arrogance is shown principally by Mercutio, given in act 3 scene 1, he insults Tybalt by calling him a ratcatcher . The thinkers focus their investigation on the authority of science, instinct, and faith.
