Cleary On Tobacco
The American lung association estimated if the cost of one pack cost $5.5 then the cost of production
for that pack would be $18. Cleary the tobacco industry does not do any good to the economy, it only
taking over 3 times the amount from the economy. Although some states have been trying to cover
health expenses by rising taxes to pay for healthcare however it will never be high enough to cover
them. In addition to this, the use of tobacco decrease workers productivity. For instance, a smoker
would be absent from work and still getting paid and their absences usually last longer because their
health conditions would be more complicated. It is clearly proven that the expenses does not match the

Analysis Of Gossip Girl
The television series Gossip Girl encompasses many aspects of current day society. Based off the
popular book series, the show follows Manhattan s elite, and showcases the lives of the upperclassmen
teens, focusing on their relationships, school lives and careers. When looking at Gossip Girl from a
sociological perspective, there s many hidden themes that are brought to light. While also showcasing
some controversial issues, Gossip Girl reflects many themes that can been seen in society. Contrary to
some belief this series displays a substantial amount of feminism, with the use of powerful female
characters, but lacks the accurate representation of social class and contains numerous gender
stereotypes.
In addition to the fact that the show largely surrounds the leading female protagonists, Blair Waldorf
and Serena van der Woodsen, there is a great deal of feminism being shown by these Upper East Side
women. To begin with, Blair Waldorf can be seen as the shows most driven and head strong female,
who goes about her life in an unabashedly feminist way. She demonstrates female power and
dominance with her values focusing on remaining at the top of the social rank. Despite her social
standing, Blair rejects the privilege of having opportunities or rewards being handed to her and
chooses to work for her goals. This can be shown in both the books and the television series, as Blair
strives to get a 4.0 grade point average, enrolls herself in AP classes, partakes in

To Helen And Doolittle s To Helen
In ancient times, Helen of Troy was known far and wide for her astounding beauty. She was the wife
of Menelaus, a Greek king. She abandoned her husband for a young Trojan prince named Paris.
Menelaus enraged by his wife s betrayal, began preparations for what is known as the Trojan War.
Now in modern times many writers use this legend as poetic inspiration, but certainly view Helen in
different ways. These diverse viewpoints of Helen are made known by the different tones between
Edgar Allen Poe s poem To Helen and Hilda Doolittle s poem Helen. In To Helen Poe s speaker has a
very adoring view of Helen, while in Helen Doolittle s speaker tells of the fostered hatred Greece has
for her. The difference in these views is illustrated in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In To Helen, she is portrayed as an iconic, goddess like beauty, while in Helen, she is viewed as the
bane of Greece and is described as frail and detested by others. What is noticed in the poem Helen, is
the increasing abhorrence towards her. Throughout the poem each stanza has a line added on to it,
symbolizing the increasingly negative feelings toward Helen. This change is implemented into the
poem because of how the people of Greece reminisce on past enchantments and past ills. They begin
to remember how much they praised Helen for her beauty, and then how much her act of betrayal
changed their lives for the worse. To further demonstrate her feelings of hate towards Helen she states,
[Greece] could love indeed the maid, only if she were laid, white ash amid funereal cypresses. Using
diction such as white ash and funereal cypresses which implies Helen is cremated and a funeral is
being held for her. These words signify that the Greek s hate could not be satisfied with anything other
than Helen s death. In To Helen, the speaker describes her Lo! in yon brilliant window. How statue
like I see thee stand. even idolizing her posture. Another way the speaker views her as a beautiful
goddess is his comparison between their relationship and Psyche, from the regions which are Holy
Land! The speaker is comparing his relationship to the love between the immortal Cupid and mortal

The History Of Sedimentary Basins
The sedimentary record is the best archive of basin forming tectonics and structural processes,
particularly in regions with complex tectonic history such as the Eastern Cordillera in the Northern
Andes of Colombia. Multiple tectonic episodes have driven fault reactivation and sedimentation in the
Cenozoic is related to contractional strain. Sedimentary basins within the Eastern Cordillera contain
coarse and fine grained units. The presence of coarse grained units in the distal regions of a foreland
basin are in particular used to constrain deformation history on the basis of the conditions governing
their deposition. Varying mechanisms are proposed for distal coarse clastic facies including 1)

The addition of a second chronometer such as ZHe bolsters provenance constrains. Though, different
locations can have similar ZHe ages within one region, ZHe and ZPb ages cannot be the same unless
related to volcanism (Reiners et al., 2005). Therefore, for accurate tectonic interpretations based on
volcanic grain exclusions, we implement the use of double chronometry on the same detrital grains, an
approach only used in the axial Eastern Cordillera (Saylor et al., 2012b). ZHe plays a valuable role in
determining tectonic and thermal evolution of the thrust belt via lag time analysis (Cerveny et al.,
1988, Ruiz et al., 2004, Bernet et al., 2006, Saylor et al., 2012). Changes in Lag time reflects
upsection variation in deformation and exhumation rate of the adjacent orogen by interpreting five lag
time trajectories. On each end of the spectrum, an upsection decrease in lag time will indicate
accelerated thrust induced exhumation and an upsection increase in lag time will indicate reduced
exhumation and possible introduction of a new source area. Various studies in the Eastern Cordillera
have focused on single chronometry using either ZPb for provenance history (Horton et al., 2010,
2015, Cardona et al., 2010, Nie et al., 2010, Bayona et al., 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, Saylor et al., 2011,

Talent Shows Essay
The influence of talent shows on the music industry
In the recent years, talent shows have become some of the most lucrative and popular television
programmes all around the world. The charm of such contests is easy to fall for wewatch average
people become stars virtually overnight and we root for them, often showing our support by spending
money on voting. While there are several kinds of talent shows, those most popular are singing
competitions, which aim to showcase talented singers and create viable musiccareers. While those
programmes thrive and enjoy immense popularity, they are also widelycriticised for the way in which
they impact the music business. In this essay I will try to presenthow talent shows affect the music

to avoid being up against JLS and Alexandra Burke and Leona Lewis [all previous
The X Factor contestants], because they know they have automatic access to a promotions platform
that other labels don t have (Addley, par. 10).To reiterate, talent contests have a great influence on how
the music industry operates andfrom the aforementioned effects, we can arrive to the conclusion that
their impact is mostlynegative. Though they provide the market with numerous newcomers, few of
those are able tocreate their own original image or sustain their careers for more than a couple of
months. While it ishard to dismiss the vast popularity that talent shows enjoy, it is also important to
remember that theymight be one of the many nails in the coffin of the present day music

Essay about Two Suits, Two Dresses, or One of Each
How can denying two people of the same sex the right to have a marriage be considered
constitutional? Why is our country taking away rights of people because they want to be with
someone of the same gender? Gay and lesbian couples have been denied their right to marry for some
time now. Same sex couples should be allowed to express and celebrate their commitment to a partner
the same way a heterosexual couple does, as well as obtain the same benefits. Our country is not a

This means the government cannot enact laws that prevent marriage between individuals of a certain
sexual orientation. If marriage is considered a civil liberty, then the 14th amendment should stop the
government from making laws that prohibit civil liberties based on a person s choice in a partner. . . .
Section 3 of DOMA violates the equal protection clause because it treats gay man and lesbians
differently on the basis of their sexual orientation (Hanna 30). If we continue to strike down laws like
DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act), which denied same sex couples the right to marry, we can fight
this controversy and help innocent people obtain a right that they were born with.
Some people may argue that marriage has always been defined as between one man and one woman
or that allowing gay marriage will weaken the institution of marriage. Extending to gays and lesbians
the right to marry would undermine traditional marriage, and therefore, governments have a valid
reason to maintain the traditional definition of it (Hanna 29). It is inaccurate to define marriage as
between one man and one woman because our world history is full of polygamy, concubines,
mistresses, and prostitution. Kings in the past had many women and this was considered normal, one
could say that the traditional marriage is the one that is not normal. We redefine things as the general
attitudes about them

A Rose For Boland s Fond Memory
Eavan Boland s Fond Memory is a poem which is used to explore the poets past, acting as a vehicle
for returning to the days of her childhood. This poem is written with the intent to confront a past
memory and creates a relationship between Boland as a young girl and the woman she was when she
wrote this. Through the use of literary techniques we become a part of the journey that Boland
undertakes in order to go back to her child self and speak about her memories. This is a very personal
poem as Boland is sharing part of her life with us. The personal element to the poem allows a
relationship to be formed with the reader as she engages with our emotions. The relationship between
the poet and the reader creates a stronger image of the young lonely girl that Boland is writing about.
The use of imagery in Fond memory is reflective of what it was like as a young Irish girl growing up
in London. The separation between Boland and the other children is represented through the negative
imagery that she uses to describe them, all the children wore darned worsted, reflecting her dislike
towards them. It is interesting that the same negative imagery isn t used when she describes herself, I
dressed in wool as well the descriptions are separate so the reader views them as two separate
identities, mirroring how Boland was viewed at the time. By emphasising the hostility that she felt as a
child, Boland is also revealing that as an adult she still harbours resentment towards the

Tax Assessment And Its Effects On Today s Taxation Policy...
Tax assessment has always been a hotly debated issue in economic. We all know that it costs a lot to
run a household. In the same sense, it costs a lot of money for a government to run a country. This is
why taxation is necessary. Through taxation, a government can compensate their spending and fund
the social services that benefit most of the society. High tax can compensate the government spending
while may curb investment. A question always being raised is that how to impose an appropriate and
efficient tax without harming our economy and what subjects are best to be taxed. We can find the
answer from the analyses on different approaches to taxation by Adam Smith and David Ricardo
throwback a century ago. Their analyses still have a far reaching impact on today s taxation policy.
Adam Smith discusses different strategies for levying a tax in his book Wealth of Nations . Smith calls
attention to that the state can raise money through five different channels: taxes on the rent of land,
taxes upon the rent of the house, taxes upon profit, taxes upon the wages of labour and taxes upon
consumable commodities. One way for Smith to evaluate those five different taxation channels is that
whether they satisfy the four basic maxims for taxation he made. For a tax to be considered good and
efficient, it needs to meet the following four basic principles raised by Smith:
I. The subjects of every state outhg to contribute towards the support of the government, as

Underage Drinking and Symbolic Interactionism
Underage drinking in the United States has become a societal norm and plays a large role in teenage
culture. You see it everywhere in pop culture and real life experiences. In high school it seems like
every teenager around you is drinking at some point in your high school career. Reality TV shows and
movies seem to shine a light on underage drinking and make it more prevalent in society. The peer
pressure of underage drinking starts to intensify and then suddenly before you realize it you have

but it also occurs all the way across the pond in Europe. One example of Symbolic Interactionism and
teen drinking is a crisis that has been happing in Europe with Danish teenagers around the age of 14 to
15. In the scholarly article by Demant and Järvinen about how alcohol is used for social recognition
and to symbolize maturity by teenage drinking.
The function of alcohol in this struggle for recognition is so strong that the teenagers who drink very
little or not at all are put under considerable pressure. With alcohol as the central marker of maturity
and the parents of the teenagers who drink are described as supporters of this view teenagers who do
not drink come out as potential losers in the status negotiations of the groups. (Demant and Järvinen
2006)
Demant and Järvinen show how the symbol of drinking a lot makes you socially older than teenagers
that choose to drink less or not at all. Symbolic interactionism is a micro level theoretical framework
and perspective in sociology that addresses how society is created and maintained through repeated
interactions among individuals, is how Carter and Fuller (2016) describe symbolic interactionism. It
shows how the repeated interactions of teenager s underage drinking forms a society where some are
socially older and some are considered losers. That is how this study shows how Symbolic
interactionism relates to underage

Summary Of Addition By Garrett Hardin
In the excerpt, Life Ethics: The Case Against Helping the Poor. , the author Garrett Hardin raised the
question whether rich nations should sustain the needs of the more insufficient nations in the world.
He addresses this question by utilizing the idea of a lifeboat. Hardin metaphorically paints the picture
of a boat, which represents the world, the passengers within the boat, which represent the rich nations,
and the swimmers outside of the boat, which represent the poorer nations in need of financial gain. In
Addition, the author exerts that there is only a significant amount of room available on the boat,
limiting the inclusion of the swimming passengers. Furthermore, the ecologist opens the door to the
different scenarios in which questions the morality of those aboard.Simultaneously, Hardin delivers
the possible outcomes of each solution to strengthen his stance against assisting the poor. Garrett
Hardin, zeroing in on the negative outcomes of allowing others aboard the lifeboat, effectively
supports his claim, through his metaphoric model of the lifeboat , the plethora of scenarios, and the
inclusion of moral theories. In the beginning, Garrett Hardin adequately illustrates the idea of the
Lifeboat Scenario to introduce his logic for not (280). First, Hardin states that there are 50 people
located inside the lifeboat, but he notes that there is room for only 10 more, generating a total capacity
of 60 people allowed onboard. Not to mention, Hardin says

Wither The Australian Film Industry?
After I moved to Australia at the hindsight of this year, I happened to make an argument to myself in
regard to the state of the Australia Film Industry. However, over the course of the year, being

past two decades.

No place in Australia is truly its representative. Which means that the things that are identifiably

and I completely agree with his views. The main themes that resonated in the past have in some ways
been discredited and with others yet to take their place. To a large extent the cultural language has
been lost. The consequences of internationalism and globalisation have separated the Australian
population from the national cinema market. This disturbance has provoked a change in the nature of
government funding, dominant film institutions and Australian audiences. These changes mean that

Computer Vs. Personal Computers
Smart phones and computer have been around for quite a while, but the only difference is that the
personal computers have been around way longer than smart phones. Before computers were a big
deal, but now it s all about smart phones and new ones that are launching soon. People may not think
so much about personal computers because today s generation is all about smart phones now. I
understand that people can have their own personal opinion and may disagree with what I m saying,
but my opinion is that personal computers are better. Personal computers is a better, electronic than
smart phones because personal computers are not a distraction, and are a lot more helpful. First,
personal computers are less distracting. Computer actually need access to Wi Fi in order to do
anything. I believe computer are better because if you have no Wi Fi then you can t access your social
media and wouldn t be distracted. You also won t be distracting while driving because you won t have
Wi Fi and it is actually safer because you can pay more attention to driving than being on social
media. Computers also don t receive text messages nor phone calls, which is a good thing. This
electronic is also good for when doing homework because you can listen to music, type better, and
faster on the keyboard. In contrary, smartphones are very distracting. Smartphones can be helpful
when you can t access Wi Fi for google maps or just looking up a store for hours, email and other

Ted Demme s Blow
Ted Demme s Blow is a highly informative movie about America s war on drugs. Although
dramatized at times, the film depicts the war on drugs rather accurately and captures the true essence
of why America is fighting a war on drugs. Rather than generalizing the drug war to its audience, the
film individualizes it to help facilitate the understanding of topics such as drug smuggling, mandatory
minimum sentencing, and sting operations. The formation of an almost personal connection with
George Jung is crucial in the beginning of the film. Including Jung s background information is

At the end of the movie, George Jung decided that after legally making his own money he wanted to
have one last drug job for some extra cash, little did he know that his old gang was setting him up to
be caught by the federal government. Although the movie does not show the work done by the federal
government to find out this information, it showed how easy it is for the government to still access
anything they want. In the world of drug cartels, wiretapping is extremely important since law
enforcement can directly listen into conversations and use it as evidence against the drug offenders. In
some cases, previous drug cartel members are turned into informants so the government can set up a
sting operation, which is what happened to George Jung. Since the drug deal already went through and
he was in possession of the cocaine, there was nothing Jung could do to escape law enforcement.
Operations like this can be very risky nowadays since drug cartels are rather violent, but for the time
Jung was in the drug business it was perfect. Jung s crime itself also showed how strict sentencing had
become for drug offenders over the years. For simply conspiring to smuggle drugs, Jung received a 60
year prison sentence. Although his sentence was extremely reduced for testifying against his old
partner, the 60 year sentence is still very extreme for simply smuggling drugs into the United States.
This shows the harshness of the drug laws in the United States and how the country is trying to do
everything in their power to win the war on

Wars are often complex in nature and are fought for diverse reasons.
In the Iliad, powerful gods, great nations, and heroic people all fight for
different reasons. Each has private motivations to fight the war. These
private motivations are of special interest, because they help define the

not want the social war to end. A god in the universal war once again created
the social war between Troy and Greece. The universal war was the cause of the
social war of Greece and Troy.
The private war of Achilles honor was an outgrowth of the social war
between the Greeks and the Trojans. During the social war, Apollo grew angry at
the Greeks for the abuse of his priest, Chryses. The Greeks had abused Chryses
when Agamemnon took Chryses daughter, Chryseis, during the raid of the town
of Thebes. Agamemnon wanted a replacement for Chryseis, so he took Briseis from
Achilles. This deeply wounded the honor of Achilles, and he decided to stop
fighting in the social war until his honor was amended. Achilles was angered by
an event that occurred in the social war, thus providing the need for Achilles
to reclaim his honor. The social war was the cause of the private war of
Achilles. The opportunity for Achilles to carry out his private war came after
the death of his comrade, Patroclus. Because Achilles would not fight,
Patroclus asked him if he could wear his armor. Patroclus thought

Abortion And The Social Aspects Of Abortion
INTRODUCTION
It is estimated almost half of pregnancies in Australia are unplanned . Unexpected pregnancies happen
for various individual, social, economic and political reasons . The World Health Organisation (WHO)
approximates one in three women in Australia will have an abortion procedure in their life . Abortion
data is only gathered by South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. However,
South Australia is the only state to publish data and report findings annually. Abortion is a heavy topic
which has the nation spilt into two groups; pro life or pro choice. Pro life is in favour of the foetus and
they believe that by killing the foetus it is equivalent to murder. Pro choice is for abortion, as they
believe that the woman has the choice to do what she wants with her body. This report will cover how
religion deals with abortion and how it can clash with modern ethnicity, abortion safety, the
repercussions of abortion and the social aspects of abortion.
RELIGION VS ETHNICITY
Religious communities have had a convoluted history in regards to abortion. The Catholic Church of
Australia states the direct and voluntary killing of an unborn is gravely immoral. No reason, however
serious or tragic, can ever justify the deliberate killing of an innocent human being . Abortion is not
explicitly forbidden within the Bible; as neither the Old nor New Testament condemns it. As a social
norm, however, Catholic s believe that life starts at conception via

Comparing Kafka s Metamorphosis And A Tuft Of
ing of Discovery as a significant human experience? Discovery is the paradigm human beings use to
understand their own experiences, in that the epiphany of discovery stimulates self growth and
motivates individuals to find out more, perpetuating discovery as a fundamental human desire and
experience. Robert Frost s poems Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening , Mending Wall and A Tuft
of Flowers explore the necessary meaningful and reflective process of discovery in which all humans
must experience. Similarly, The Metamorphosis written by Franz Kafka and Sean Penn s Into the Wild
utilises an individuals surrounding environment to enforce the idea of isolation prompting the human
experience and the need to discover. Overcoming thresholds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Similar to Frost s poem, Kafka s novella, Metamorphosis explores the life of the protagonist, Gregor,
as he encounters a sudden physical transformation which acts as a catalyst for his self discovery.
Kafka s incorporation of nature and social disconnection, through the metaphor of transformation of
the protagonist from human to vermin, allows the audience to explore Gregor s emotional instability
in relation to his perspective upon himself, through the representation of his changing psychological
state through the life of a bug. Kafka uses descriptive language such as armour like back... and brown
belly, slightly doomed and divided by arches into stiff section prompting thought and imagination
amongst the readers, creating a lasting impact in the mind of the reader through the use of symbolism
of the surrounding natural environment. The use of anthropomorphism emphasises the protagonist s
discovery and self evaluation of his own worth and value both within society and his family. Kafka
expresses the issues of prioritising a job and how the constant travel made to and from work restricts
and individuals ability to have human interaction ...you can never get to know anyone or become
friendly with them as limiting the persona s potential to discover. As evident within Gregor s speech,
the idea of self discovery is illuminated through the abrupt change in appearance into his new insect
body Gregor was shocked when he heard his own voice... it could hardly be recognised. In this
dialogue Kafka reveals how the protagonist quite literally realises he has no say within his household
to call out for help, or simply to voice his opinion. As Gregor accepts his transformative self
discovery, through his change in perspective as he reflects upon his ability to view life in a new light
from the aspect of being an insect. Similarly, both

Segkugawa Shogunate Essay
During the Early Modern Era, from 1450 to 1750 CE, the Tokugawa Shogunate came to power in
Japan after the civil war. Meanwhile, the global spread of Christianity affected Asia as European
missionaries came to spread their faith among Asian countries, like how the Spanish missionaries
spread Christianity in the Philippines, causing it to be major outpost of Christianity in Asia. In Japan,
the era of sengoku lead to the rise of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the consequences of the rise of the
Tokugawa Shogunate were the change in social position of ruling elites and the rise of the merchant
class, the rise of Dutch learning, and Japan s seclusion from European influences. The era of sengoku,
the civil war, lead to the creation of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Because of the war between the
shoguns and the retainers, Japan was not politically united, and was mostly ruled by the daimyo, who
were powerful territorial lords. The last chieftain, Tokugawa Ieyasu, who sought ... Show more

Before, due to Chinese cultural influences, the Japanese social hierarchy ranked the shogun, daimyo
and samurai at the top, whereas the merchants were at the bottom. However, once Japan became
politically stable, the interest of the Tokugawa shoguns was to reduce the number of professionally
armed warriors, so they encouraged the daimyo and samurai to become bureaucrats and government
functionaries. As they lost their accustomed place in society, many of the ruling elite fell into financial
difficulty and fell into genteel poverty. On the other hand, merchants became increasingly wealthy and
prominent because they were successful in urban environments, like the city of Edo. They soon had
more wealth than the ruling elite and some that were exceptionally wealthy were able to purchase elite

Kindertransport Essay
Discuss the role of the Ratcatcher in this extract and elsewhere in the play.
The play Kindertransport written by Diane Samuels rotates immensely around the Ratcatcher. The
Ratcatcher s role in this extract and the whole play can be interpreted in many ways.
The given extract begins with Helga reluctantly agreeing to read The Ratcatcher as a bedtime story to
Eva. The reasons for Helga s reluctance remain ambiguous as the play proceeds with Helga reading
the book simultaneous to Faith who is in a different setting also reading the same book. The following
scene is of Eva frantically leaving in a train.
Helga s hesitancy in this extract as Eva requests The Ratcatcher books suggests an underlying
implication that the tale is similar ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the play proceeds the Ratcatcher also takes upon a number of different characters such as the Nazi
Border Official, the English Organiser, the Station Guard, etc. All of these are portray threatening and
patronising characters that stereotype her or simply authoritative figures. This reflects the author s
attempt to present to the reader the different viewpoints of the society about the Jews and refugees
such as Eva.
In addition another key factor which has a significant impact on the manner in which the Ratcatcher s
role can be interpreted is the language used to describe him in the given extract. He is described as
someone who hisses the aggressive words I will find you. The use of the strong verb I will indicates a
threatening and predatory tone. A similarly threatening tone is used further into the play by an officer
who exclaims Sir! Sorry Sir indicating Eva to repeat after him. The stage directions also state that the
officer bodysearches Eva which reflect his threatening and patronising character. The similar character
of authority figures to the Ratcatcher suggests that perhaps these figures are just the reality version of
the Ratcatcher.
The Ratcatcher Music is one of the factors frequently referred to in the stage directions of the play.
Soon in the play it is evident that the music is often added into the scene in which

The Words to Say It by Marie Cardinal
The Words to Say It by Marie Cardinal is an exceptional narrative of a young woman s seven year
journey through psychoanalysis; a journey through which she embarks on an unconquered path to a
successful self discovery. While on that journey, Cardinal regains control over her health and body,
redefines womanhood and femininity, discovers injustices and inequality and gets out of madness.
Cardinal s sensual and artistic writing through colorful metaphors, imagery, poetic language and
sensual descriptions characterizes the heroic triumph from madness.
Cardinal s narration of psychoanalysis treatment is celebrated as one of the best accounts. In the
introduction, Bruno Bettelheim praises The Words to Say It: of all accounts of ... Show more content

From this portrayal of psychoanalysis through her prolific writing, one can get a thorough
understanding of the healing power of analysis through writing. The step by step process and
articulate expression of the habit of deep thinking in search of the inner experiences is expressed
clearly. The analysis was a journey of self discovery and Cardinal s transformation is evident from her
zeal for life at the end of the gestation period. Discovering what one is feeling and thinking, through
writing, helps negotiate and tolerate a new psychic space. It is one that is sometimes terrifying but
sometimes exhilarating (DeSalvo, 182). This is true of Cardinal after the analysis; she regained a new
self, free from the bondages that haunted her previous life. She was on a quest to secure her freedom
and truth.
The Words to Say It would be classified as a quest narrative. Frank describes this as a narrative that
tells self consciously of being transformed; undergoing transformation is a significant dimension of
the storyteller s responsibility (118). Cardinal was not the same after the illness and was even better
after going through treatment and finding her voice through writing. Moreover, the quest narrative
affords the ill their most distinctive voice (Frank, 115). Her goals in treatment were very clear from
the onset: to gain control over health and body and to discover self.

American Ideal In The 1950s
Media and suburbs have defined and shaped American ideals in various ways, ranging from the ideal
family structure in America, the ideal appearance and behavior of individuals to the ideal social
arrangement and division in America.
Media defined the America dream as the ability of a family to live in suburbs and follow the gender
specific functions in American society. Through overwhelming representations of suburbia in media,
suburb living was shaped as an American ideal in the 1950s. Media portrays an ideal American home
life as one that involves home ownership in suburbs, which represented social status, guaranteed
family stability and happiness. Therefore, the lives of middle class families in suburbs have been
widely depicted in sitcoms ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The correlation between race and suburbs in America has been full of tension and exclusivity. In the
1950s, white flight, the migration of white people from city centres into suburbs, leaving behind the
black population in inner cities was common. This has contributed to a distinct spatial division
between the Anglo Americans and African Americans within the America. Being caused by the
existing income disparity, the minority African Americans, having a lower social economic status in
American, are mostly trapped in poverty cycle and are unable to afford housing ownership in suburbs.
Further aggravated by discriminative government policies towards the minorities, social division
within the country was made even more prominent. According to Haralovich, the FHA implemented
several strategies, in hope of establishing community homogeneity and stability. Protective covenants
were proposed to restrict racial mixing within neighborhoods (Haralovich, 1989). Loan applications,
accepted if submitted by whites, were rejected when filed by black families of similar standing whose
backgrounds were carefully screened to make sure they were in fact members of the middle class
(Maya MontaÒez, 2008). The city split in American was hugely caused by such deliberate racial
separatism. The measures that served to paint homogeneity within suburban neighborhoods

Robin Hood Motivated Change
Robin Hood was never real and is just an idea that motivated change. The story of Robin Hood has
been change throughout the world many many times. The stories depict him as dashing person who
took form the rich and gave to the poor. There is very little we know about him because it has been
altered from generation to generation.
The story does have some historical accuracy. The legend of Robin Hood rose out of the chaos of the
reign of King John of England, during the early thirteenth century. (1) The idea was that Robin Hood
would inspire the common folk to rebel against the mad king. This did get barons to form a group and

Howl, By Allen Ginsberg
Howl for Somebody I Never Met in a Place I Never Heard of about a Cause we Already Won Howl,
by Allen Ginsberg, is an inaccessible writing with such obscure references from a unique personal life
and small subculture from 50 years ago that it cannot stand on its own today. It tackles issues society
has already decided, makes them completely unrelatable, and attempts to shock readers. Except to
literary historians, this poem is irrelevant to modern society because of constant references to obscure
places and people, frequent vulgarity to which internet based society has been desensitized, and
societal issues that already have national level attention.

However, no readers outside this tight knit group of poets would ever know Ginsberg was referring to
real events, except in the one line where he almost parenthetically states, that actually happened,
which serves as a point of contrast by which a reader may presume none of the other events actually
happened. Carl Solomon features heavily in part three, but a first time reader has no idea who he is,
why he is, or even when he was. The best an uninformed reader can say is that he is in Rockland, and
that it might not be a nice place; the severity of said not nicity might range from the local government
confining residents in straightjackets to simply having an unusually high population of mosquitoes
during a rainy season. Even when making a reference that people outside his circle of friends would
know, Ginsberg chooses Tokay, a wine, which to some readers, is nothing more than a species of
gecko that lives on some South West Pacific islands. Interestingly enough, soldiers fighting wars
across these islands called the Tokay Gecko the F you lizard for its call, which to some sounded like
tokay, but sounded like F you to the soldiers. Other places Ginsberg references that will mean nothing
to farmers in Iowa or Wall Street investors include: Paterson, Paradise Alley, Fugazzi, and Bowery.
At times, Howl gets somewhat explicit, mentioning gyzym, cocksuckers, anal sex, and granite cocks.
Thematic referencing aside, nothing

unhappy, the loneliness she must have experienced, and the shock of being away from home and
marrying at such a young age. Fraser shows skill in informing and delivering ideas and topics.
Throughout the book Fraser presents information by means that does not bore the reader. Her skill is
in bringing forth a story with meaning and take away significance that is deeply woven into her work.
This skill is valuable, as Fraser holds attention continuously throughout her biography.

work: Marie Antoinette: The Last Queen of France by Evelyne Lever. The conclusion was reached
that Fraser s history is sound. In some places the writing can be compared and the statements are

Black women s discrimination being combined factors (Christon 2). The Black Family My newfound

The Special Relationship Between The Uk And The United States
It was only because of the special relationship with the USA that Britain could exert an influence on
international affairs in the years 1951 to 2007. Assess the validity of this view.
The Special Relationship between the UK and the US relates to the unusually close relationship
between these two world powers that has developed over the 20th and 21st centuries. They have an
incredibly tight co operation on such a wide variety of things, ranging from trade and economics to
military power, nuclear weapons and intelligence; one that is almost unprecedented in history for two
separate nations. After the Second World War, when the relationship was crystallised by the term it
became one as much of personal friendships as of political power; and given the closeness developed
between the two nations as a result of wartime, it became a keystone of post war politics in both
countries, having significant impact in both of their subsequent histories, and also those of other
nations. Some of these relationships have been iconic in their pairings: Margaret Thatcher and Ronald
Reagan; Tony Blair and George Bush; Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt (who were in fact related);
whilst others have been less fruitful Anthony Eden, a man previously considered to be the authority of
his time on foreign policy, having been Foreign Secretary for 30 years, had to resign as Prime Minister

Bic Research Paper
Introduction
Pens, I m sure you use them nearly every day. Most likely, a fair number of the pens you use are BIC.
BIC, a disposable consumer product manufacturer, was founded in 1945. The product I chose to
research is the most common, the BIC Cristal ballpoint pen. BIC was created in France, now it has
spread its reach to the far corners of the world. BIC sells everything from pens, to lighters, to water
sports equipment.
Description
The BIC Cristal is made up of several materials. The majority of the pen is plastic. The variety of
plastic is called polystyrene. When polystyrene is produced it emits chlorofluorocarbons.
Chlorofluorocarbon is a toxic gas that has about 1200 times the effect of carbon dioxide on the
atmosphere. The plastics of the pen are manufactured in China, The US, France, And the Netherlands.

The first being the plastic, now obviously there still needs to be some plastic in the pens for them to

would suggest steel, or for a more natural approach, wood. The tungsten carbide is the worst element
of the pen. I think that it could easily be replaced with steel also, or even a different alloy. The pens
may be lower quality, but they would cost less to make. In addition to this, the product would be more
aesthetically pleasing if the casing was wood or steel. Right now the all natural look is in, and the
wood casing would give the pen a rugged look, sure to boost sales. They can also look for a different
place to mine their tungsten carbide. In addition to that the steel manufacturing plants are in two
different places, halfway across the world from each other. BIC could easily save gas if they

Cleary the tobacco industry does not do any good to the economy, it only taking over 3 times the amount from the economy. • 4. Analysis Of Gossip Girl The television series Gossip Girl encompasses many aspects of current day society. Based off the popular book series, the show follows Manhattan s elite, and showcases the lives of the upperclassmen teens, focusing on their relationships, school lives and careers. When looking at Gossip Girl from a sociological perspective, there s many hidden themes that are brought to light. While also showcasing some controversial issues, Gossip Girl reflects many themes that can been seen in society. Contrary to some belief this series displays a substantial amount of feminism, with the use of powerful female characters, but lacks the accurate representation of social class and contains numerous gender stereotypes. In addition to the fact that the show largely surrounds the leading female protagonists, Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen, there is a great deal of feminism being shown by these Upper East Side women. To begin with, Blair Waldorf can be seen as the shows most driven and head strong female, who goes about her life in an unabashedly feminist way. She demonstrates female power and dominance with her values focusing on remaining at the top of the social rank. Despite her social standing, Blair rejects the privilege of having opportunities or rewards being handed to her and chooses to work for her goals. This can be shown in both the books and the television series, as Blair strives to get a 4.0 grade point average, enrolls herself in AP classes, partakes in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. To Helen And Doolittle s To Helen In ancient times, Helen of Troy was known far and wide for her astounding beauty. She was the wife of Menelaus, a Greek king. She abandoned her husband for a young Trojan prince named Paris. Menelaus enraged by his wife s betrayal, began preparations for what is known as the Trojan War. Now in modern times many writers use this legend as poetic inspiration, but certainly view Helen in different ways. These diverse viewpoints of Helen are made known by the different tones between Edgar Allen Poe s poem To Helen and Hilda Doolittle s poem Helen. In To Helen Poe s speaker has a very adoring view of Helen, while in Helen Doolittle s speaker tells of the fostered hatred Greece has for her. The difference in these views is illustrated in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In To Helen, she is portrayed as an iconic, goddess like beauty, while in Helen, she is viewed as the bane of Greece and is described as frail and detested by others. What is noticed in the poem Helen, is the increasing abhorrence towards her. Throughout the poem each stanza has a line added on to it, symbolizing the increasingly negative feelings toward Helen. This change is implemented into the poem because of how the people of Greece reminisce on past enchantments and past ills. They begin to remember how much they praised Helen for her beauty, and then how much her act of betrayal changed their lives for the worse. To further demonstrate her feelings of hate towards Helen she states, [Greece] could love indeed the maid, only if she were laid, white ash amid funereal cypresses. Using diction such as white ash and funereal cypresses which implies Helen is cremated and a funeral is being held for her. These words signify that the Greek s hate could not be satisfied with anything other than Helen s death. In To Helen, the speaker describes her Lo! in yon brilliant window. How statue like I see thee stand. even idolizing her posture. Another way the speaker views her as a beautiful goddess is his comparison between their relationship and Psyche, from the regions which are Holy Land! The speaker is comparing his relationship to the love between the immortal Cupid and mortal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The History Of Sedimentary Basins The sedimentary record is the best archive of basin forming tectonics and structural processes, particularly in regions with complex tectonic history such as the Eastern Cordillera in the Northern Andes of Colombia. Multiple tectonic episodes have driven fault reactivation and sedimentation in the Cenozoic is related to contractional strain. Sedimentary basins within the Eastern Cordillera contain coarse and fine grained units. The presence of coarse grained units in the distal regions of a foreland basin are in particular used to constrain deformation history on the basis of the conditions governing their deposition. Varying mechanisms are proposed for distal coarse clastic facies including 1) Orography (Masek et al., 1994) and climate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The addition of a second chronometer such as ZHe bolsters provenance constrains. Though, different locations can have similar ZHe ages within one region, ZHe and ZPb ages cannot be the same unless related to volcanism (Reiners et al., 2005). Therefore, for accurate tectonic interpretations based on volcanic grain exclusions, we implement the use of double chronometry on the same detrital grains, an approach only used in the axial Eastern Cordillera (Saylor et al., 2012b). ZHe plays a valuable role in determining tectonic and thermal evolution of the thrust belt via lag time analysis (Cerveny et al., 1988, Ruiz et al., 2004, Bernet et al., 2006, Saylor et al., 2012). Changes in Lag time reflects upsection variation in deformation and exhumation rate of the adjacent orogen by interpreting five lag time trajectories. On each end of the spectrum, an upsection decrease in lag time will indicate accelerated thrust induced exhumation and an upsection increase in lag time will indicate reduced exhumation and possible introduction of a new source area. Various studies in the Eastern Cordillera have focused on single chronometry using either ZPb for provenance history (Horton et al., 2010, 2015, Cardona et al., 2010, Nie et al., 2010, Bayona et al., 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, Saylor et al., 2011, Bande et al., 2012, Ochoa et al., 2012, Ayala et al., ... Stella has written to Blanche She wasn t expecting to find us in such a small place. You see I d tried to gloss things over a little in my letters (31). Blanche meanwhile travelled to stay with the Kowalski on two streetcars which will ultimately determine her faith she longs for desire but could not bear the sign of death. Stella was mistakenly fallen for his charm and manner. Harold Mitchell (Mitch) is supposedly defined as a man of power and ruler. Get him in here, men! (63).He however began to form a god like presence when confronting Blanche. Sadly still he is an ironic form of Stanley yet shares similar charactertics with Blanche s deceased husband Allan Grey. He is very awkward being around her and the bond with his mother seemed tight. At the end of the play Mitch felt a sense of regret and guilt and stood up to Stanley only to be knocked down like Blanche did with Allan Grey. Allan Grey maybe described as a sign of light and god like to others. He was Blanche s first lover since his death her world turned upside down. I loved him unendurably but without being able to help him or help myself (114) His last name Grey is a mixture of black and white meaning the white color was to show people he was heterosexual man and knowing Blanche s name meaning he asked her for help while the black color was to hid him from being viewed as a homosexual. The charm of such contests is easy to fall for wewatch average people become stars virtually overnight and we root for them, often showing our support by spending money on voting. While there are several kinds of talent shows, those most popular are singing competitions, which aim to showcase talented singers and create viable musiccareers. JamesFoley, a music journalist, describes this influence as follows: Does [ The X Factor ] impact on thesigning and release schedules of other labels? Of course it does. They will do anything to avoid being up against JLS and Alexandra Burke and Leona Lewis [all previous The X Factor contestants], because they know they have automatic access to a promotions platform that other labels don t have (Addley, par. 10).To reiterate, talent contests have a great influence on how the music industry operates andfrom the aforementioned effects, we can arrive to the conclusion that their impact is mostlynegative. Though they provide the market with numerous newcomers, few of those are able tocreate their own original image or sustain their careers for more than a couple of months. While it ishard to dismiss the vast popularity that talent shows enjoy, it is also important to remember that theymight be one of the many nails in the coffin of the present day music industry.Works cited:1. • 9. Essay about Two Suits, Two Dresses, or One of Each How can denying two people of the same sex the right to have a marriage be considered constitutional? Why is our country taking away rights of people because they want to be with someone of the same gender? Gay and lesbian couples have been denied their right to marry for some time now. Same sex couples should be allowed to express and celebrate their commitment to a partner the same way a heterosexual couple does, as well as obtain the same benefits. Our country is not a Theocracy, we have separation of church and state, therefore the government cannot press biblical or church will on citizens. This means the government cannot enact laws that prevent marriage between individuals of a certain sexual orientation. If marriage is considered a civil liberty, then the 14th amendment should stop the government from making laws that prohibit civil liberties based on a person s choice in a partner. . . . Section 3 of DOMA violates the equal protection clause because it treats gay man and lesbians differently on the basis of their sexual orientation (Hanna 30). If we continue to strike down laws like DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act), which denied same sex couples the right to marry, we can fight this controversy and help innocent people obtain a right that they were born with. Some people may argue that marriage has always been defined as between one man and one woman or that allowing gay marriage will weaken the institution of marriage. Extending to gays and lesbians the right to marry would undermine traditional marriage, and therefore, governments have a valid reason to maintain the traditional definition of it (Hanna 29). It is inaccurate to define marriage as between one man and one woman because our world history is full of polygamy, concubines, mistresses, and prostitution. Kings in the past had many women and this was considered normal, one could say that the traditional marriage is the one that is not normal. We redefine things as the general attitudes about them ... • 10. A Rose For Boland s Fond Memory Eavan Boland s Fond Memory is a poem which is used to explore the poets past, acting as a vehicle for returning to the days of her childhood. This poem is written with the intent to confront a past memory and creates a relationship between Boland as a young girl and the woman she was when she wrote this. Through the use of literary techniques we become a part of the journey that Boland undertakes in order to go back to her child self and speak about her memories. This is a very personal poem as Boland is sharing part of her life with us. The personal element to the poem allows a relationship to be formed with the reader as she engages with our emotions. The relationship between the poet and the reader creates a stronger image of the young lonely girl that Boland is writing about. The use of imagery in Fond memory is reflective of what it was like as a young Irish girl growing up in London. The separation between Boland and the other children is represented through the negative imagery that she uses to describe them, all the children wore darned worsted, reflecting her dislike towards them. It is interesting that the same negative imagery isn t used when she describes herself, I dressed in wool as well the descriptions are separate so the reader views them as two separate identities, mirroring how Boland was viewed at the time. By emphasising the hostility that she felt as a child, Boland is also revealing that as an adult she still harbours resentment towards the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Tax Assessment And Its Effects On Today s Taxation Policy... Tax assessment has always been a hotly debated issue in economic. We all know that it costs a lot to run a household. In the same sense, it costs a lot of money for a government to run a country. This is why taxation is necessary. Through taxation, a government can compensate their spending and fund the social services that benefit most of the society. High tax can compensate the government spending while may curb investment. A question always being raised is that how to impose an appropriate and efficient tax without harming our economy and what subjects are best to be taxed. We can find the answer from the analyses on different approaches to taxation by Adam Smith and David Ricardo throwback a century ago. Their analyses still have a far reaching impact on today s taxation policy. Adam Smith discusses different strategies for levying a tax in his book Wealth of Nations . Smith calls attention to that the state can raise money through five different channels: taxes on the rent of land, taxes upon the rent of the house, taxes upon profit, taxes upon the wages of labour and taxes upon consumable commodities. One way for Smith to evaluate those five different taxation channels is that whether they satisfy the four basic maxims for taxation he made. For a tax to be considered good and efficient, it needs to meet the following four basic principles raised by Smith: I. The function of alcohol in this struggle for recognition is so strong that the teenagers who drink very little or not at all are put under considerable pressure. • 14. Summary Of Addition By Garrett Hardin In the excerpt, Life Ethics: The Case Against Helping the Poor. , the author Garrett Hardin raised the question whether rich nations should sustain the needs of the more insufficient nations in the world. He addresses this question by utilizing the idea of a lifeboat. Hardin metaphorically paints the picture of a boat, which represents the world, the passengers within the boat, which represent the rich nations, and the swimmers outside of the boat, which represent the poorer nations in need of financial gain. In Addition, the author exerts that there is only a significant amount of room available on the boat, limiting the inclusion of the swimming passengers. Furthermore, the ecologist opens the door to the different scenarios in which questions the morality of those aboard.Simultaneously, Hardin delivers the possible outcomes of each solution to strengthen his stance against assisting the poor. Garrett Hardin, zeroing in on the negative outcomes of allowing others aboard the lifeboat, effectively supports his claim, through his metaphoric model of the lifeboat , the plethora of scenarios, and the inclusion of moral theories. In the beginning, Garrett Hardin adequately illustrates the idea of the Lifeboat Scenario to introduce his logic for not (280). Although the movie does not show the work done by the federal government to find out this information, it showed how easy it is for the government to still access anything they want. In the world of drug cartels, wiretapping is extremely important since law enforcement can directly listen into conversations and use it as evidence against the drug offenders. In some cases, previous drug cartel members are turned into informants so the government can set up a sting operation, which is what happened to George Jung. Since the drug deal already went through and he was in possession of the cocaine, there was nothing Jung could do to escape law enforcement. Operations like this can be very risky nowadays since drug cartels are rather violent, but for the time Jung was in the drug business it was perfect. Jung s crime itself also showed how strict sentencing had become for drug offenders over the years. For simply conspiring to smuggle drugs, Jung received a 60 year prison sentence. Although his sentence was extremely reduced for testifying against his old partner, the 60 year sentence is still very extreme for simply smuggling drugs into the United States. Interestingly enough, soldiers fighting wars across these islands called the Tokay Gecko the F you lizard for its call, which to some sounded like tokay, but sounded like F you to the soldiers. Other places Ginsberg references that will mean nothing to farmers in Iowa or Wall Street investors include: Paterson, Paradise Alley, Fugazzi, and Bowery. At times, Howl gets somewhat explicit, mentioning gyzym, cocksuckers, anal sex, and granite cocks. Thematic referencing aside, nothing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

African American studies is a way to learn about individuals outside Black History Month. African American studies provides a way to deepen an individual s understanding from the diaspora. Within the case, a handful of Black women brought suit against General Motors, alleging that the employer s seniority system perpetuated the effects of past discrimination against Black women (Crenshaw 139). However, they could not sue on the basis of racism because Black men had been hired, and they could not sue on the basis of sexism because white women had been hired. As a result, the court dismissed both claims of sex and race discrimination. Such cases revealed the reality of Black women s discrimination being combined factors (Christon 2). • 37. The Special Relationship Between The Uk And The United States It was only because of the special relationship with the USA that Britain could exert an influence on international affairs in the years 1951 to 2007. Assess the validity of this view. The Special Relationship between the UK and the US relates to the unusually close relationship between these two world powers that has developed over the 20th and 21st centuries. They have an incredibly tight co operation on such a wide variety of things, ranging from trade and economics to military power, nuclear weapons and intelligence; one that is almost unprecedented in history for two separate nations. After the Second World War, when the relationship was crystallised by the term it became one as much of personal friendships as of political power; and given the closeness developed between the two nations as a result of wartime, it became a keystone of post war politics in both countries, having significant impact in both of their subsequent histories, and also those of other nations. Some of these relationships have been iconic in their pairings: Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan; Tony Blair and George Bush; Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt (who were in fact related); whilst others have been less fruitful Anthony Eden, a man previously considered to be the authority of his time on foreign policy, having been Foreign Secretary for 30 years, had to resign as Prime Minister following the Suez Crisis and its resultant deterioration of the trust and relationship he had with ... BIC, a disposable consumer product manufacturer, was founded in 1945. The product I chose to research is the most common, the BIC Cristal ballpoint pen. BIC was created in France, now it has spread its reach to the far corners of the world. BIC sells everything from pens, to lighters, to water sports equipment. Description The BIC Cristal is made up of several materials. The majority of the pen is plastic. The variety of plastic is called polystyrene. When polystyrene is produced it emits chlorofluorocarbons. Chlorofluorocarbon is a toxic gas that has about 1200 times the effect of carbon dioxide on the atmosphere. The plastics of the pen are manufactured in China, The US, France, And the Netherlands. The tip of the pen is brass, and has a tungsten carbide ballpoint. The first being the plastic, now obviously there still needs to be some plastic in the pens for them to work, but the outside casing can easily switched to a different material. To make the pens last long I would suggest steel, or for a more natural approach, wood. The tungsten carbide is the worst element of the pen. I think that it could easily be replaced with steel also, or even a different alloy. The pens may be lower quality, but they would cost less to make. In addition to this, the product would be more aesthetically pleasing if the casing was wood or steel. Right now the all natural look is in, and the wood casing would give the pen a rugged look, sure to boost sales. They can also look for a different place to mine their tungsten carbide. In addition to that the steel manufacturing plants are in two different places, halfway across the world from each other. BIC could easily save gas if they consolidated their steel ...
