Analyzing The Birkin Out Of A Personal Interest
The Hermès Birkin arguably epitomizes conspicuous consumption. Made from only the finest
materials in the world, it needs no advertisements; it is not even listed for sale on Hermès s online
shop. Old money socialites and young trendsetters alike carry it. But how does it reflect upon its
devotees both owners and aspirants? What does it say about the values held by people in the know? To
what lengths will people go in order to own a Birkin (or a cheap look alike)? __________ I chose to
examine the Birkin out of a personal interest in fashion. Although clothing may seem trivial on its
surface, it speaks volumes about how the wearer views themselves and others, as well as how they
wish to be perceived. My interest in luxury brands, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jane Birkin had this to say about the origin of the handbag named after her:
I remember it well. I d been upgraded by Air France on a flight to London, and was sitting next to a
man. I m not quite sure what type of bag I had with me my husband, Jacques Doillon, had reversed his
car over my basket, crushed it on purpose not two days before. Little did he know that on this airplane
journey, when everything fell out of whatever bag I had, the man next to me said: You should have
one with pockets . I said: The day Hermès make one with pockets I will have that , and he said: But I
am Hermès and I will put pockets in for you .
That man was the late Jean Louis Dumas, then chief executive of Hermès. They began to sketch ideas
for the bag on an Air France sick bag. In exchange for giving her the bag for free, he asked that he be
able to name the bag after her, so that it may be associated with her popularity and image (Leitch). It is
unclear whether or not that story is true, but its effects are clear. The story serves as a creation myth,
making the handbag seem sacred and divine due to the serendipitous encounter that birthed it. The
Birkin is handmade in France, a process which takes between 18 and 20 hours per bag depending on
the craftsperson s level of experience. The handle alone takes four hours to make (Groat). Hermès
sources its cow and calf hides from Tanneries Haas, an equally storied tannery in Alsace, France.
Virtually all of the labor is

Attending High School Narrative
My visions of attending law school were soon shattered due to the simple fact of money and time.
Although arguing is a guilty pleasure of mine I was more interested in the fashion, envisioning playing
dress up with famous designers. While my time spent in the apparel industry was vast and
knowledgeable I yearned for something more. Having the ability to reflect on my ten year experience
gave me the insight to conclude that a career was more important than just having a job. As luck
would have it my department was unable to renew a lease therefore terminating my position. Yes,
many would have had an emotional breakdown, but I took this heartache as a blessing. I got back on
that wagon, left my one month old daughter with a sitter and attended

Research Paper On Noah s Ark Animal Sanctuary
Noah s Ark Animal Sanctuary, a wildlife preserve in Locust Grove, Ga., found and rescued three baby
animals fifteen years ago, and the trio has been inseparable ever since. The animals, an African lion
named Leo, a black bear named Baloo, and a Bengal tiger named Shere Kahn, were found in the
basement of an Atlanta home after a drug raid. They were reportedly confined there in small crates and
had sustained multiple injuries. All of the cubs were less than a year old and extremely malnourished.
Baloo had been infected by parasites, and Leo had a wound on his nose that was badly infected. After
rescuing the cubs, the sanctuary provided them with the medical attention they needed and kept a
close eye on them as they healed. Baloo the

Criticism Of Piecemeal Social Engineering
the state from the ground up. It is radical. Piecemeal social engineering, however, does not have the
same idealized society as the end point, or at least, sees it as something in the far distance. Piecemeal
is far less risky, for several reasons that Popper points out in his critique. Firstly, because piecemeal
social engineering looks at solving the most urgent evils of society, and not just trying to get rid of all
of them, with the goal of creating a heaven on earth, it is a method that can be applied to at any
moment (Popper 148). Small changes that improve happiness is much easier to do than trying to fully
eliminate suffering. An example of this type of improvement would be call centers for parents with
sick children. This would allow the parents to call and get support from a registered nurse or doctor,
without having to wait in long lines at the hospital, or adding to those long lines. Piecemeal is about
solving issues that are occurring right now, and by doing that, is bettering society. This also makes this
method faster that utopian, which takes generations for the blueprint to be seen though, instead of
smaller aspects being fixed right away. There are many other issues that are connected to the long
timeframe of utopian social engineering takes. Popper points out that making a heaven on earth is not
something that can be done in one or more generations. The leader who starts the plan, will not be the
same one there when the state finally reaches the final

Compare And Contrast Christianity In Beowulf
The story of Beowulf deals with life, death, violence, kings, and monsters. Written around 800 CE,
and then picked up hundreds of years later to be rewritten by a monk, it is written well after the
coming of Christ. It could be simply read as an action adventure, filled with conquests and elaborate
feasts, as were common of Old English tales. The story is not that simple though, and gives us a peek
into a culture going through some drastic changes. Once built upon a Pagan belief system void of
Christ and saturated with values such as revenge and violence, the Anglo Saxons did not immediately
adopt all of Christianity. There was a lengthy time in which both sets of beliefs were muddled and
weaved together haphazardly, where no one religion was distinct. Beowulf is an example of these
cultural influences crashing together. While Christianity in Beowulf, the Old English epic poem, looks
different than the Christianity we recognize today, the story is built with Christian values.
The plot itself may seem classically medieval, with characters and events that the people would have
appreciated, but the underlying messages reveal where the culture was heading. The story follows a
main character, Beowulf, who is a traditional epic hero. His position in the story is important, because
it is something that readers at the time would readily recognize and appreciate. Not only is he a great
hero, but he has some almost supernatural abilities. He kills Grendel, a monster terrorizing

Nursing Grand Theorists
Grand theories consist of abstract and generalized concepts. These concepts cannot be generated or
tested empirically . Grand theories are formulated by going above and beyond current knowledge and
theories to develop new and insightful ones. (Lincoln Memorial University Carnegie Vincent Library s
website, 2015) McEwen and Wills (2014) categorize grand theories based on three different schemes:
scope, nursing domain, and paradigms. Various theorists throughout nursing history have chosen
different ways to group their theories. McEwen and Wills (2014) described categorizing based on
scope to be the most logical method. Theorist Alligood and Tomey grouped their theories based on the
scope. These scopes include philosophies, nursing conceptual

Pompeii s Destructive Evening In Pompeii
A loud noise like a gun went off from the volcano exploding as people ran for their lives. This is
probably what one destructive morning in Pompeii looked like in 79 AD. Pompeii is important
because of its destruction, rediscovery, and because it provided information about the ancient world.
Mt. Vesuvius gave Pompeii a warning earthquake in 62 AD (Goor 8). In 79 AD, a loud bang warned
the city that Vesuvius was about to explode (Cartwright par.12). The explosion covered over 200
square miles, including not only Pompeii, but a couple other towns (List25). The eruption lasted about
a day, but the ash, rocks, and pumice blanketed the city for about two days. Pompeii was buried about
twenty feet deep (List25). After the eruption, some people tried to dig to their homes (Goor 13). The
eruption was one day after the festival of the Roman god of fire (List25).
Pompeii was founded in 7th century BC and was at the peak of it s existence. It was even popular for
rich Roman tourists to stay there (List25). Even Nero, a Roman emperor, had one of his summer
houses in Pompeii, and one of his wives was born there (Cartwright 3). After August 24, 79 AD,
Pompeii was forgotten. Soon, grass and flowers covered the city (Etienne 11). After a while, Pompeii
was called Civias or ancient city (Goor 13). Pompeii s name was ... Show more content on

Atom Dbq Report
Throughout the centuries, there have been many people, from Democritus to Rutherford, that have
changed the structure and the ideas of atoms. The atom has changed 6 times in the last 200 years(OI).
Can you imagine that? Here are some ways the atom has changed.
What is an atom? An atom is a small particle that makes up most types of matter(OI). The atom was
first discovered by Democritus in about 300 B.C.(Doc 1). He believed that bits of matter were too
small to see and could not be divided. As a result he named it the atom, which means cannot be
divided in Greek. This was the first step to understanding matter. The next person to study atoms,
2,000 years later, was a French chemist by the name of Antoine Lavoisier(OI). From his experiments,

Analysis Of All The Missing Girls
Is it monsters from the dark, mysterious woods, jealous ex boyfriends, or ditching town? These are all
theories as to why two teenage girls from the, supposedly, postcard worthy town have disappeared in
the past ten years. In All the Missing Girls, Nic is back in her hometown, for a sojourn for the first
time since her friend, Corrine, disappeared ten years ago, and now Annaleise Carter is missing. The
memories of Corrine s case begin to resurface as alibis, motives, and connections between the cases
are questioned. In a small town like Cooley Ridge, rumors are the plague, spreading everywhere not
caring whose lives they ruin. (☺ Metaphor) I finished reading The Woman in Cabin 10, and the
resolution is that Richard commits suicide after killing his real wife, and his fake wife and Lo both
survive. The three most important searches in All the Missing Girls are the search for connections
between the two cases of the missing girls, the search for Corinne, and Tyler s search for love.
The search for connections between the cases leads to Tyler being questioned as a suspect, and Nic
going on a mission to solve the cases. Tyler is suspected because he is dating Annaleise. He claims
they broke up the night before she disappears, which heightens suspicions. He also ditches town after
Annaleise goes missing. Nic thinks, Tyler was starting to feel like a ghost, like if I blinked for too
long, he might slip away for good (Miranda 171). He is fleeing the investigation. By

Different Paths of Enlightenment in Siddhartha by Herman...
Throughout Siddhartha, Herman Hesse demonstrations the different paths to enlightenment through
the use of memorable characters such as Siddhartha and Govinda. Siddhartha and Govinda were the
sons of Brahmins and thus grew up basked in the ways of religion. The boys were constantly praying
and listening to teachings of the teachers in their town. Because of this, they are closer to
enlightenment, or the knowledge of self, sought by everyone around them. Siddhartha believes that
life has more to offer than praying and meditating like his father. Govinda, who is less of a leader than
Siddhartha, believes that the only way to enlightenment is through following other teachers.
Throughout the book it is shown the each person must find their own path to enlightenment.
Siddhartha and Govinda s routes to discover enlightenment vary greatly. Siddhartha believes that one
must find their own enlightenment. Siddhartha begins to believe that enlightenment cannot be taught
early in his life. While he is still a boy living with his father, Siddhartha, Had begun to suspect that his
worthy father and his other teachers, the wise Brahmins, had already passed on to him the bulk and
best of their wisdom...his intellect was not satisfied, his soul was not at peace (5). Siddhartha doesn t
think that the teachers can teach him anything more and he is still a young boy. Later, Siddhartha
leaves his friend to progress his life. After they meet the Gotama, Siddhartha says, Always, oh

Shallow Encoding Essay
The brain only stores meaningful information because:
The brain memorization process is very complex. Known as engrams, the brain encodes the
experiences by strengthening the connections between groups of participant neurons (Schacter, 1996).
Once formed, engrams vegetate until familiar signals bring them back into memory. There are two
types of encodings: shallow and elaborative. Used on a daily basis, the brain practices shallow
encoding to store short term memory. An example, in classroom practices of shallow encoding, is the
homework page and exercises assigned. On the other hand, long term memory storage happens thru
elaborative encoding by creating associations and connections with prior knowledge. For instance, in a

Budget Analysis Paper
One of the most significant documents in any local, federal, or public organizations is a budget.
Employees in budgetary and financial management perform important roles within the public sector
and hold exceptionally vital positions. Positions such as city and county managers, human resource
managers, and public finance officers.
County and city managers supervise the operations of the county or city in which they work, to
include defining the budget as well as manage non elected staff associates who are employed in
various departments within the county or city. Some local government managers may also advise
higher level government officials, including the mayor or the city council, in establishing laws and
policies.
Public finance officers including budget and fiscal management, hold a range of financial management

The Silver Bow Creek Watershed
The Silver Bow Creek watershed in southwest Montana encompasses approximately 474 square miles
and forms a portion of the headwaters of the Clark Fork River and ultimately, the Columbia River
(Montana Natural Resource Damage Program, 2009). The site covers about 26 miles of stream and
stream side habitat. Silver Bow Creek was used as a conduit for mining, smelting, industrial and
municipal wastes for more than a hundred years (Weitz, Luxenberg). Rather large amounts of mine
tailings deposits are found along the creek. These deposits contain elevated levels of metals and have
been dispersed over the entire flood plain (Weitz, Luxenberg).
Silver bow creek and the Summit Valley have not always been a site of pollution and contaminated
mining sites. The Summit Valley was inhabited by Native American Indians from the Salish,
Kootenai, and Flathead tribes (Clark Fork Watershed Education Program). Long before European
miners discovered gold in the Butte Area on Silver Bow Creek these tribes used the area of the entire
upper Clark Fork valley for seasonal hunting and fishing grounds. Later, the area was also used as a
passage route for Nez Perce and Blackfeet Indians (Clark Fork Watershed Education Program). The
Original Mine claim was staked on Butte hill because its owners found diggings and pits with antler
tools and exposed ore rock.
The dominant land use has historically been mining, with minor amounts of agriculture and tourism
(Montana Natural Resource Damage Program). In

Solving the Road Safety Problem in United States
In the United States alone, there are almost 11 million traffic accidents per year, leading to 36 million
fatalities (United States Census Bureau, 2012). These numbers are even higher in developing nations,
where nearly half of the world s registered vehicles are located but practically all (90%) of traffic
accident fatalities occur (Toroyan, 2009). Most of these fatalities can be prevented via public policy
measures, and policy is essential to improve road safety worldwide. Road safety must become a part
of global public policy through means such as education, awareness, and public relations. To improve
road safety, though, great amounts of resources are required for the improvement of roads and the
safety of vehicles too. Resources are also necessary to bolster the laws related to traffic, and the
enforcement of those laws. Issues like vehicle design must also be taken into consideration. Road
safety therefore requires a complex and comprehensive public policy that includes extensive
assessment, thorough implementation, multifaceted monitoring, and ongoing evaluation. Extensive
assessment of each community s problems and needs is the first step towards improving road safety
worldwide. Ogden (1996) points out that determining the solutions to road safety problems such as
traffic fatalities requires first an assessment of the nature and dimensions of the road safety problem.
Assessment begins first with an evaluation of the region s road conditions and the types of vehicles

This means that when the user is searching for a specific page through a search engine such as Google,
they will be able to find what they are looking for swiftly and will not have to search through other
pages to find what they want. This means that meta tags allow better navigation and accessibility to
information for users.
Meta tagging can be used in order to aid user access to information, as it helps people find the website
based on the topic of information. This is done effectively when all of the keywords are included in
the meta data when the website is being built. For example, when a website is being designed to
promote itself such as a cricket club, words in relation to the club would be used such as cricket,
batsman, sponsor, club name etc. these words would all be included within the meta rage because
these words are related to the topic of the page and would therefore allow people to find the website
and its information a lot more quicker and easily.
Meta tagging is necessary for aiding users to find a website and being able to access the information
that it contains. Meta tagging makes finding websites a lot easier because you do not need to know the
specific URL of the web page that you are trying to search for. This is due to the fact that the user can
use the information that is already provided to them in order to find a link to that webpage that they

Touchdown after Touchdown, point after point, but I sat motionless on the couch, like a sack of
potatoes, trying not to miss a minute of the action. The day felt like it would never end.
The morning games were beginning to end, and the afternoon games were beginning to kickoff now
and I was losing 65 55, but I knew that a comeback was still possible. Then all the stars began to
align. Within the span of 3 minutes, McCown threw a touchdown, Evans caught a touchdown and
Matt Prater nailed a field goal right through the middle of the uprights. I was now winning 97 86 with
only the Sunday night game remaining. Tonight the Vikings were playing the seemingly unstoppable
Jaguars in Jacksonville. Earlier in the day, I ended up making the last minute decision to start Murray
over McCoy, however, he still had Bortles and Fournette to play. The projections were 102 105 in his
favor, and we were neck to neck and the race was about to end.
The time had come, it was now or never. I was still sitting on the couch, but now I was sitting up

next to me with a comforting look and put his long, hairy arm over my shoulder. Trying to make me a
little more at ease he said: I m praying for you buddy.
The Jaguars were off to a hot start in the first half, with Bortles throwing two perfect touchdown

Bhopal Ethics
The Bhopal gas leak was a terrible tragedy in which thousands of helpless civilians were killed and
hundreds of thousands were injured as they slept. Determining who was at fault and, consequently,
who should compensate the victims and clean up the site are questions that have plagued the affected
parties, my Rotman classmates and the world at large for over 25 years. The analysis to follow, in
attempting to present the roles and responsibilities of each major player, will demonstrate the
incredible difficulty involved in assigning conclusive responsibility for the tragedy. This will be
followed by my personal reflections on the incident in which I present an additional culprit to those
discussed in class. Union Carbide Corporation (US): ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Secondly, the Government neglected the densely populated shanty town that had grown up near the
plant on land deeded from local officials. Its residents were the first and main victims of the poisonous
gas. Still, many will argue that a cost benefit analysis made creating jobs and accessible pesticide for a
poor and hungry region the proper priority. While many were ultimately harmed by the leak, how
many more had benefitted from the poverty alleviating jobs and hunger alleviating crops? Here again
we find valid points and counter points, leaving us no closer to assigning conclusive blame and
responsibility for the tragedy. Dow Chemical: While Dow certainly protected itself in the purchase
agreement from a legal standpoint, there are those that suggest the proper ethical action is for Dow to
assume responsibility for any outstanding clean up and compensation. While this may innately feel
like the right thing to do, the counterpoint that Dow had nothing to do with the incident and should not
be punished after paying fair market value for Union Carbide is also valid. Personal Reflection:
Analyzing the conduct of the major parties has not produced any conclusive allocation of
responsibility. It is clear that each party deserves significant blame but no party deserves total blame.
There is, however, an overlooked culprit that I believe deserves the bulk of the blame: the expectations
market that has hijacked the decision making of US corporations(1).

Love Sonnets In Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 By William...
Sonnets written in Elizabethan England were usually after Petrarch s works. Petrarch was a man who
was in love with a girl name Laura de Noves. He wrote 366 poems about his love for this woman from
the year 1327 all the way until 1368. His works were very stereotypical love poems that included lines
like, She ruled in beauty o er this heart of mine, / A noble lady in a humble home, / And now her time
for heavenly bliss has come, / Tis I am mortal proved, and she divine. Petrarch wrote in such a way to
charm a woman, as did many other writers of his time. However, there is one writer who took a
different approach when writing about the woman he admired. This man considered on the greatest
writers in the English language; William Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 is a reverse portrayal of Petrarch s
ideas of a love sonnet and what it should be. Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 is often also referred to as My
mistress eyes, which adds emphasis to the first line, My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun. As the
opening line, this makes readers aware of what they are about to encounter throughout the sonnet. In
this work Shakespeare is simply mocking the work of writers like Petrarch, and we as readers love it.
Metaphors making comparisons to nature are often used to show the beauty of something when
writing. William Shakespeare s Sonnet 130, makes the same comparisons, however he makes the
metaphors in favor of the natural features rather than his mistress. Shakespeare isn t being rude to his
mistress by doing so; he is taking things at face value and being blatantly honest. The sonnet has been
included below for easier comparison. Notice that each negative metaphor in the first part of the
sonnet takes up only one line, and does not rhyme. Later in the poem Shakespeare expands the
comparisons to two lines. This has multiple effects on the poem such as allowing it to expand. By
allowing expansion, the sonnet is prevented from being stagnant. Although Shakespeare was mocking
other writer s forms of love poems, I feel that he had a much deeper and more meaningful purpose to
his sardonic writing. Shakespeare wanted to show that women can be beautiful without having cheeks
as red as rose, or eyes

The respiration rate of the goldfish is done through their gills where there is a collection of dissolved
oxygen from the water and a release of carbon dioxide (shmoop); this is a way for the organism to

to consider that affect the result such as the dependent variables: the healthy of goldfish, and size.
While the independent variables is time. The affect of different temperatures to the goldfishes

Informative Essay On Canoe Water
People want common sense paddling courses that allow them to enjoy the river with competent skills.
Canoe certification courses are good, but sometimes the technicality is more then what the average
person wants. On river instruction with certified canoe instructors teaches safe ways to enter/exit
canoes, how to steer a canoe without switching sides, handy canoe stroke techniques and canoe
rescues. There is also a review of basic equipment needed, what to look for in canoe purchase and
what to pack as a simple safety precaution. These four hour course are filled with practical hands on
experience as a canoe trip is done on the river.
Many people that paddle lakes think they are prepared to canoe a river. Lakes do not have speed and
they do not have the force of water moving around and over obstacles at sudden depth changes. This
unfamiliarity is a potential danger to any lake canoeist. River novices would be wise to take a canoe
lesson with an instructor.
Proper canoe lessons on a river teach how to read water, a technique not required on lakes. A canoeist
that knows what they are looking at makes the best decisions of where to go. Just understanding what

Virtual Colonoscopy Research Paper
Virtual Colonoscopy
Virtual colonoscopy is a procedure that can be used to examine the large intestine (colon), the rectum,
and the small intestine. In this procedure, X rays and computers (CT scan or MRI) are used to produce
images of these body areas. The exam can help find problems such as tumors, polyps, or
diverticulosis.
Virtual colonoscopy provides a way to examine the colon without inserting the flexible instrument
(colonoscope) into the colon as is done in a regular colonoscopy. However, a virtual colonoscopy does
not show as much detail, so smaller polyps may not be seen during this procedure. Also, your health

A tear in the lining of the colon from inflating the colon with air during the procedure. The risk of this
is small.
Exposure to radiation (small amount).

Ask your health care provider about changing or stopping your regular medicines. This is especially
important if you are taking diabetes medicines or blood thinners.
You may be prescribed an oral bowel prep. This involves drinking a large amount of medicated liquid,
starting the day before your procedure. The liquid will cause you to have multiple loose stools until
your stool is almost clear or light green. This cleans out your colon in preparation for the procedure.
Do not eat or drink anything else once you have started the bowel prep, unless your health care

Human Resources Management
The Changing Role of HR Management
For years, businesses relied on personnel departments for the management of their employees. The
primary concerns of the personnel departments included attendance records, benefits, and salary.
Therefore, the personnel departments did not consider the importance of contributions a company s
employees made to the business. These contributions included such things as diversity and intellectual
capital. As businesses began to expand globally, they began realizing the importance of their human
resources. Thus the concept of Human Resources (HR) management began to emerge as an outgrowth
of the personnel departments. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, and Wright (2007) more businesses in the United States are
beginning to realize they need to acknowledge and recognize the diversity of their employees and use
this diversity in ways that will allow them to gain advantages over their competition (Noe et al.,
2007).
Response to e Business
Individuals and organizations are beginning to recognize the importance of the Internet in conducting
business. As a result, e business is becoming more prevalent. The book defines electronic business or e
business as any process that a business conducts electronically, especially business involving use of
the Internet (Noe et al., 2007, p. 50). E business allows consumers to purchase items using the Internet
or conduct banking transactions, companies to conduct transactions with each other, and consumers to
conduct transactions among themselves such as auctions. Because of the increasing use of the Internet
to conduct business, HR managers find themselves faced with several challenges. These challenges
include ensuring the company is continually updating their employee requirements regarding such
things as ability and competence. HR managers must recruit and train people to meet those
requirements.
Response to Ethics
Businesses need to ensure the people they hire to work in and manage their HR departments behave
ethically. The definition of ethics is the fundamental principles of right and wrong (Noe et

Aboriginal culture. Luhrmann covers many different aspects of the Aboriginal culture such as the
portrayals of the stolen generations, half castes and the assimilation policy.
Luhrmann addresses the stolen generations aspect of the Aboriginal culture through the character
Nullah. There is one scene where Fletcher has told the authorities that there is a half caste at Faraway
Downs. Nullah hides in the water tank with his mother who ends up drowning in the water tank which

There was not one shot throughout the film that showed where the Aboriginal pastoral workers lived
and what the state of their living was like. Luhrmann made it look like the workers would live at their
bosses ranch instead of their shelters made of bark and branches which had no clean water, no
sanitation and no electricity. Luhrmann portrays all of the Aborigines as workers who get given
quality rations and get paid, but in fact, the Aborigines would never get paid. The real struggle
between landowners and workers was briefly shown when Luhrmann shows the audience that they
have a limited number of workers when they go to move the cattle. They only had a small number of
trained Aborigines to help move the cattle when they actually needed more to complete the move.
They end up training up the female Aborigines along with Lady Sarah and Nullah to help move the
cattle which in that time would have been a breakthrough and made the Aborigines feel more equal
and appreciated. During the movement of the cattle, the cattle get a fright and charge towards the edge
of the cliff. They do everything they can to stop the cattle from going off the edge. This powerful
scene is a metaphor Luhrmann wanted to portray. The cattle at the edge of the cliff are a metaphor for
the long history of massacres of indigenous people, often at the edge of

Comparing Wide Sargasso Sea and Jane Eyre Essay
Authors, Jean Rhys and Charlotte Bronte constructed their novels in completely different time periods
and came from different influences in writing. Jean Rhys s fiction book, Wide Sargasso Sea is an
interesting relation to Jane Eyre. The female character of Jane Eyre forms into a furiously, passionate,
independent young woman. The female character of Jean Rhys s illustration is a character that Jane
will know further on as Rochester s crazy wife who is bolted in an attic. Jean Rhys further studies this
character, where as Charlotte Bronte approved that it was left explained (Thorpe 175). Antoinette,

These two novels are both feminist works, although each book leads to feminist problems somewhat
differently. Jane has a strong foundation in what woman deserve, as well as achieve specific goals for
how she portrays her spot in society being a woman; Antoinette has no knowledge where to start to
change herself. In Wide Sargasso Sea, Rhys poses the likelihood that maybe; the gap between women
and men can t be penetrated. Possibly, the unbalance is so great that Antoinette cannot have a feeling
of cheerfulness and pleasure that Jane discovers near the end of the novel. Wide Sargasso Sea portrays
the fluctuating position of woman in the twentieth century. Wide Sargasso Sea and Jane Eyre can
single handedly be looked at as signs of feminist texts, however, Wide Sargasso Sea presents itself
with more description on post modern shape of feminism.
An interesting insight into grasping the un similarities of how Antoinette and Jane portray their roles

The Causes Of High Student Debt
The Causes of High Student Debt
Today, in our society there is high expectation for students to go higher education after finishing high
school. Since College tuition is going skyrocket a lot of students are having hard time paying for their
tuitions. Most students, to pay for their college tuition, they have to apply for loans that put them in
dept after they graduate According to recent report by Fay, 72% of the Class of 2017 graduates owes
an average of more than $37,000 for the four years they put in earning a degree (Fay). These graduates
have only six month grace period before the first loan payment is due and for most of them; this is not
the way they expected to start their adult life (Fay). After graduation this debt can be overwhelming to
pay off. It isn t fair, but that s what it s like to be a student these days. It is very important to know the
factors that led to increase student loans. That helps students and their families to educate themselves
and to manage the loans.
The number one cause for students to get into too much debt is the high increase in college tuition cost
every year. According to Best, College costs are climbing faster than the cost of living, with more than
half of college students carrying an average debt of $27,000 at graduation (Best I II). Students tend to
be overburdened with debt when they graduate. Some go on to pursue advanced degrees; on the way,
they end up with more debt because the career these students are hoping for is

Tyranny In Ancient Greece
Monarchies, aristocracies, tyrannies, oligarchies, and democracies existed throughout the human
history. What about ancient Greece? Were tyrannies or democracies more prevalent? When and where
exactly? Let s take a look.
Tyranny is the rule by one powerful dictator, called tyrant. Tyrant is defined as a ruler who has seized
power without legal right. Where tyrants appeared? In fact, many states, in the 6th century BC
particularly, were ruled by a tyrant, including Pisistratus in Athens.
A tyrant takes power by force. He is usually from a noble family but often had the support of poor
people. In a Tyranny power is not inherited, unlike a monarchy. Unlike the meaning of tyranny in
modern day, it was not always an oppressive and brutal rule. For example, Pisistratus rule in Athens.
According to the British Museum tyrannies first appeared in Argos or Corinth, then Sicyon, Megara,
Mytilene and Miletus. Sparta avoided tyranny, probably to strengthen the unity of citizens against
helots. Pisistratus became tyrant in Athens 3 times, starting around 560 BC. Under the Kypselidai
tyranny, the city of Corinth became known for pottery production and export, art and trade.

Charter Schools Vs. School Schools
To quote Jonathan Stith, Where you see the charters providing an avenue of escape for some, it hasn t
been for the majority, (Zernike 4). In some cities charter schools are educating more that half the
students in some American cities (Zernike 1). These charter schools make promises to parents and
students that are hard to pass up in many cities, where public education is lacking and private
education is out of reach for many. Charter schools exist all across America, in forty two states and
Washington D.C.(Oliver). These charter schools promise choice, opportunities for better and safer
education, as well as strive to to close the achievement gap occurring in schools across America.
(Oliver). The question is: are charter schools living up to this promise? I believe that many charter
schools are failing to follow through on these promises and, that changes should be made in order to
provide a more genuine source of educational opportunity to students across America. The first
promise of charter schools I would like to focus on is that on choice. While charter schools offer a lot
of choice there is still no good choice (K Zernike 1.) Charter schools typically pop up most frequently
in urban areas often where they are unneeded. Charter schools will set up wherever space is available,
sometimes within blocks from each other according to Kate Zernike, making it easier to find a charter
school than to buy a carton of milk, (K Zernike 1). A good example of this is in

The origin of life insurance in India can be traced back to 1818 with the establishment of the Oriental
Life Insurance Company in Calcutta. It was conceived as a means to provide for English Widows. In
those days a higher premium was charged for Indian lives than the non Indian lives as Indian lives
were considered riskier for coverage. The Bombay Mutual Life Insurance Society that started its
business in 1870 was the first company to charge same premium for both Indian and non Indian lives.
In 1912, insurance regulation formally began with the passing of Life Insurance Companies Act and
the Provident Fund Act.
By 1938, there were 176 insurance companies in India. But a number of frauds during 1920s and
1930s tainted the image of insurance industry in India. In 1938, the first comprehensive legislation
regarding insurance was introduced with the passing of Insurance Act of 1938 that provided strict
State Control over insurance business.
Insurance sector in India grew at a faster pace after independence. In 1956, Government of India
brought together 245 Indian and foreign insurers and provident societies under one nationalised
monopoly corporation and formed Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) by an Act of Parliament, viz. LIC
Act, 1956, with a capital contribution of Rs.5 crore.

Limitations Of Athenian Democracy
The ancient city state of Athens has long been celebrated for the foundation of the first democracy in
the 5th century B.C.E. Though it was unrivaled by any other ancient civilization in the creation of a
government that offered its citizens a way to directly participate in various democratic institutions and
make their voices heard, it was far from perfect. Identifying the limitations of Athenian democracy at
its peak and investigating some of the events that potentially let to its subsequent demise provides a
more complete understanding of the weaknesses in the democratic system. While Athenian democracy
granted ordinary male citizens unprecedented political power and is celebrated for being an innovative
form of government in the ancient world and a model for contemporary democracy, it was inclusive of
only a small portion of the Athenian population and had inherent flaws within the system that
ultimately lead to its failure.
Although Athens had a direct democracy, participation in the government was heavily restricted.
Governmental participation was initially extended to the ordinary citizens of Athens in order to
mitigate the resentment of the majority of people towards the aristocratic tier of society. However,
women, slaves, and immigrants were excluded from citizenship, and true citizens (men of age with
Greek parents) made up only about ten to twenty percent of the population . Also, many Greek states
were built on the institution of slavery and the subjection of

  • 2. Analyzing The Birkin Out Of A Personal Interest The Hermès Birkin arguably epitomizes conspicuous consumption. Made from only the finest materials in the world, it needs no advertisements; it is not even listed for sale on Hermès s online shop. Old money socialites and young trendsetters alike carry it. But how does it reflect upon its devotees both owners and aspirants? What does it say about the values held by people in the know? To what lengths will people go in order to own a Birkin (or a cheap look alike)? __________ I chose to examine the Birkin out of a personal interest in fashion. Although clothing may seem trivial on its surface, it speaks volumes about how the wearer views themselves and others, as well as how they wish to be perceived. My interest in luxury brands, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jane Birkin had this to say about the origin of the handbag named after her: I remember it well. I d been upgraded by Air France on a flight to London, and was sitting next to a man. I m not quite sure what type of bag I had with me my husband, Jacques Doillon, had reversed his car over my basket, crushed it on purpose not two days before. Little did he know that on this airplane journey, when everything fell out of whatever bag I had, the man next to me said: You should have one with pockets . I said: The day Hermès make one with pockets I will have that , and he said: But I am Hermès and I will put pockets in for you . That man was the late Jean Louis Dumas, then chief executive of Hermès. They began to sketch ideas for the bag on an Air France sick bag. In exchange for giving her the bag for free, he asked that he be able to name the bag after her, so that it may be associated with her popularity and image (Leitch). It is unclear whether or not that story is true, but its effects are clear. The story serves as a creation myth, making the handbag seem sacred and divine due to the serendipitous encounter that birthed it. The Birkin is handmade in France, a process which takes between 18 and 20 hours per bag depending on the craftsperson s level of experience. The handle alone takes four hours to make (Groat). Hermès sources its cow and calf hides from Tanneries Haas, an equally storied tannery in Alsace, France. Virtually all of the labor is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Attending High School Narrative My visions of attending law school were soon shattered due to the simple fact of money and time. Although arguing is a guilty pleasure of mine I was more interested in the fashion, envisioning playing dress up with famous designers. While my time spent in the apparel industry was vast and knowledgeable I yearned for something more. Having the ability to reflect on my ten year experience gave me the insight to conclude that a career was more important than just having a job. As luck would have it my department was unable to renew a lease therefore terminating my position. Yes, many would have had an emotional breakdown, but I took this heartache as a blessing. I got back on that wagon, left my one month old daughter with a sitter and attended ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Research Paper On Noah s Ark Animal Sanctuary Noah s Ark Animal Sanctuary, a wildlife preserve in Locust Grove, Ga., found and rescued three baby animals fifteen years ago, and the trio has been inseparable ever since. The animals, an African lion named Leo, a black bear named Baloo, and a Bengal tiger named Shere Kahn, were found in the basement of an Atlanta home after a drug raid. They were reportedly confined there in small crates and had sustained multiple injuries. All of the cubs were less than a year old and extremely malnourished. Baloo had been infected by parasites, and Leo had a wound on his nose that was badly infected. After rescuing the cubs, the sanctuary provided them with the medical attention they needed and kept a close eye on them as they healed. Baloo the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Criticism Of Piecemeal Social Engineering the state from the ground up. It is radical. Piecemeal social engineering, however, does not have the same idealized society as the end point, or at least, sees it as something in the far distance. Piecemeal is far less risky, for several reasons that Popper points out in his critique. Firstly, because piecemeal social engineering looks at solving the most urgent evils of society, and not just trying to get rid of all of them, with the goal of creating a heaven on earth, it is a method that can be applied to at any moment (Popper 148). Small changes that improve happiness is much easier to do than trying to fully eliminate suffering. An example of this type of improvement would be call centers for parents with sick children. This would allow the parents to call and get support from a registered nurse or doctor, without having to wait in long lines at the hospital, or adding to those long lines. Piecemeal is about solving issues that are occurring right now, and by doing that, is bettering society. This also makes this method faster that utopian, which takes generations for the blueprint to be seen though, instead of smaller aspects being fixed right away. There are many other issues that are connected to the long timeframe of utopian social engineering takes. Popper points out that making a heaven on earth is not something that can be done in one or more generations. The leader who starts the plan, will not be the same one there when the state finally reaches the final ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Compare And Contrast Christianity In Beowulf The story of Beowulf deals with life, death, violence, kings, and monsters. Written around 800 CE, and then picked up hundreds of years later to be rewritten by a monk, it is written well after the coming of Christ. It could be simply read as an action adventure, filled with conquests and elaborate feasts, as were common of Old English tales. The story is not that simple though, and gives us a peek into a culture going through some drastic changes. Once built upon a Pagan belief system void of Christ and saturated with values such as revenge and violence, the Anglo Saxons did not immediately adopt all of Christianity. There was a lengthy time in which both sets of beliefs were muddled and weaved together haphazardly, where no one religion was distinct. Beowulf is an example of these cultural influences crashing together. While Christianity in Beowulf, the Old English epic poem, looks different than the Christianity we recognize today, the story is built with Christian values. The plot itself may seem classically medieval, with characters and events that the people would have appreciated, but the underlying messages reveal where the culture was heading. The story follows a main character, Beowulf, who is a traditional epic hero. His position in the story is important, because it is something that readers at the time would readily recognize and appreciate. Not only is he a great hero, but he has some almost supernatural abilities. He kills Grendel, a monster terrorizing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Grand theories are formulated by going above and beyond current knowledge and theories to develop new and insightful ones. (Lincoln Memorial University Carnegie Vincent Library s website, 2015) McEwen and Wills (2014) categorize grand theories based on three different schemes: scope, nursing domain, and paradigms. Various theorists throughout nursing history have chosen different ways to group their theories. McEwen and Wills (2014) described categorizing based on scope to be the most logical method. • 8. Pompeii s Destructive Evening In Pompeii A loud noise like a gun went off from the volcano exploding as people ran for their lives. This is probably what one destructive morning in Pompeii looked like in 79 AD. Pompeii is important because of its destruction, rediscovery, and because it provided information about the ancient world. Mt. Vesuvius gave Pompeii a warning earthquake in 62 AD (Goor 8). In 79 AD, a loud bang warned the city that Vesuvius was about to explode (Cartwright par.12). The explosion covered over 200 square miles, including not only Pompeii, but a couple other towns (List25). The eruption lasted about a day, but the ash, rocks, and pumice blanketed the city for about two days. Pompeii was buried about twenty feet deep (List25). After the eruption, some people tried to dig to their homes (Goor 13). The eruption was one day after the festival of the Roman god of fire (List25). Pompeii was founded in 7th century BC and was at the peak of it s existence. It was even popular for rich Roman tourists to stay there (List25). Even Nero, a Roman emperor, had one of his summer houses in Pompeii, and one of his wives was born there (Cartwright 3). After August 24, 79 AD, Pompeii was forgotten. Soon, grass and flowers covered the city (Etienne 11). After a while, Pompeii was called Civias or ancient city (Goor 13). Pompeii s name was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The archeologists didn t care if they smashed holes in the walls with paintings on them (Etienne 16). As they dug, they put plaster in the gaps that once I hald dead bodies. An atom is a small particle that makes up most types of matter(OI). The atom was first discovered by Democritus in about 300 B.C.(Doc 1). These are all theories as to why two teenage girls from the, supposedly, postcard worthy town have disappeared in the past ten years. The search for connections between the cases leads to Tyler being questioned as a suspect, and Nic going on a mission to solve the cases. Tyler is suspected because he is dating Annaleise. He claims they broke up the night before she disappears, which heightens suspicions. He also ditches town after Annaleise goes missing. • 20. Solving the Road Safety Problem in United States In the United States alone, there are almost 11 million traffic accidents per year, leading to 36 million fatalities (United States Census Bureau, 2012). These numbers are even higher in developing nations, where nearly half of the world s registered vehicles are located but practically all (90%) of traffic accident fatalities occur (Toroyan, 2009). Most of these fatalities can be prevented via public policy measures, and policy is essential to improve road safety worldwide. Road safety must become a part of global public policy through means such as education, awareness, and public relations. To improve road safety, though, great amounts of resources are required for the improvement of roads and the safety of vehicles too. Resources are also necessary to bolster the laws related to traffic, and the enforcement of those laws. Issues like vehicle design must also be taken into consideration. Road safety therefore requires a complex and comprehensive public policy that includes extensive assessment, thorough implementation, multifaceted monitoring, and ongoing evaluation. Extensive assessment of each community s problems and needs is the first step towards improving road safety worldwide. Ogden (1996) points out that determining the solutions to road safety problems such as traffic fatalities requires first an assessment of the nature and dimensions of the road safety problem. • 26. Love Sonnets In Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 By William... Sonnets written in Elizabethan England were usually after Petrarch s works. Petrarch was a man who was in love with a girl name Laura de Noves. He wrote 366 poems about his love for this woman from the year 1327 all the way until 1368. His works were very stereotypical love poems that included lines like, She ruled in beauty o er this heart of mine, / A noble lady in a humble home, / And now her time for heavenly bliss has come, / Tis I am mortal proved, and she divine. Petrarch wrote in such a way to charm a woman, as did many other writers of his time. However, there is one writer who took a different approach when writing about the woman he admired. This man considered on the greatest writers in the English language; William Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 is a reverse portrayal of Petrarch s ideas of a love sonnet and what it should be. Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 is often also referred to as My mistress eyes, which adds emphasis to the first line, My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun. As the opening line, this makes readers aware of what they are about to encounter throughout the sonnet. In this work Shakespeare is simply mocking the work of writers like Petrarch, and we as readers love it. Metaphors making comparisons to nature are often used to show the beauty of something when writing. William Shakespeare s Sonnet 130, makes the same comparisons, however he makes the metaphors in favor of the natural features rather than his mistress. Shakespeare isn t being rude to his mistress by doing so; he is taking things at face value and being blatantly honest. The sonnet has been included below for easier comparison. Notice that each negative metaphor in the first part of the sonnet takes up only one line, and does not rhyme. Later in the poem Shakespeare expands the comparisons to two lines. This has multiple effects on the poem such as allowing it to expand. By allowing expansion, the sonnet is prevented from being stagnant. Although Shakespeare was mocking other writer s forms of love poems, I feel that he had a much deeper and more meaningful purpose to his sardonic writing. Therefore, the personnel departments did not consider the importance of contributions a company s employees made to the business. These contributions included such things as diversity and intellectual capital. As businesses began to expand globally, they began realizing the importance of their human resources. Thus the concept of Human Resources (HR) management began to emerge as an outgrowth of the personnel departments. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, and Wright (2007) more businesses in the United States are beginning to realize they need to acknowledge and recognize the diversity of their employees and use this diversity in ways that will allow them to gain advantages over their competition (Noe et al., 2007). Response to e Business Individuals and organizations are beginning to recognize the importance of the Internet in conducting business. As a result, e business is becoming more prevalent. The book defines electronic business or e business as any process that a business conducts electronically, especially business involving use of the Internet (Noe et al., 2007, p. 50). E business allows consumers to purchase items using the Internet or conduct banking transactions, companies to conduct transactions with each other, and consumers to conduct transactions among themselves such as auctions. Luhrmann covers many different aspects of the Aboriginal culture such as the portrayals of the stolen generations, half castes and the assimilation policy. Luhrmann addresses the stolen generations aspect of the Aboriginal culture through the character Nullah. There is one scene where Fletcher has told the authorities that there is a half caste at Faraway Downs. There was not one shot throughout the film that showed where the Aboriginal pastoral workers lived and what the state of their living was like. Luhrmann made it look like the workers would live at their bosses ranch instead of their shelters made of bark and branches which had no clean water, no sanitation and no electricity. Luhrmann portrays all of the Aborigines as workers who get given quality rations and get paid, but in fact, the Aborigines would never get paid. The real struggle between landowners and workers was briefly shown when Luhrmann shows the audience that they have a limited number of workers when they go to move the cattle. They only had a small number of trained Aborigines to help move the cattle when they actually needed more to complete the move. They end up training up the female Aborigines along with Lady Sarah and Nullah to help move the cattle which in that time would have been a breakthrough and made the Aborigines feel more equal and appreciated. During the movement of the cattle, the cattle get a fright and charge towards the edge of the cliff. They do everything they can to stop the cattle from going off the edge. This powerful scene is a metaphor Luhrmann wanted to portray. The cattle at the edge of the cliff are a metaphor for the long history of massacres of indigenous people, often at the edge of ... Jane has a strong foundation in what woman deserve, as well as achieve specific goals for how she portrays her spot in society being a woman; Antoinette has no knowledge where to start to change herself. In Wide Sargasso Sea, Rhys poses the likelihood that maybe; the gap between women and men can t be penetrated. Possibly, the unbalance is so great that Antoinette cannot have a feeling of cheerfulness and pleasure that Jane discovers near the end of the novel. Wide Sargasso Sea portrays the fluctuating position of woman in the twentieth century. Were tyrannies or democracies more prevalent? When and where exactly? Let s take a look. Tyranny is the rule by one powerful dictator, called tyrant. Tyrant is defined as a ruler who has seized power without legal right. Where tyrants appeared? In fact, many states, in the 6th century BC particularly, were ruled by a tyrant, including Pisistratus in Athens. A tyrant takes power by force. He is usually from a noble family but often had the support of poor people. In a Tyranny power is not inherited, unlike a monarchy. In some cities charter schools are educating more that half the students in some American cities (Zernike 1). These charter schools make promises to parents and students that are hard to pass up in many cities, where public education is lacking and private education is out of reach for many. Charter schools exist all across America, in forty two states and Washington D.C.(Oliver). These charter schools promise choice, opportunities for better and safer education, as well as strive to to close the achievement gap occurring in schools across America. (Oliver). The question is: are charter schools living up to this promise? I believe that many charter schools are failing to follow through on these promises and, that changes should be made in order to provide a more genuine source of educational opportunity to students across America. The first promise of charter schools I would like to focus on is that on choice. While charter schools offer a lot of choice there is still no good choice (K Zernike 1.) Charter schools typically pop up most frequently in urban areas often where they are unneeded. Charter schools will set up wherever space is available, sometimes within blocks from each other according to Kate Zernike, making it easier to find a charter school than to buy a carton of milk, (K Zernike 1). • 39. Limitations Of Athenian Democracy The ancient city state of Athens has long been celebrated for the foundation of the first democracy in the 5th century B.C.E. Though it was unrivaled by any other ancient civilization in the creation of a government that offered its citizens a way to directly participate in various democratic institutions and make their voices heard, it was far from perfect. Identifying the limitations of Athenian democracy at its peak and investigating some of the events that potentially let to its subsequent demise provides a more complete understanding of the weaknesses in the democratic system. While Athenian democracy granted ordinary male citizens unprecedented political power and is celebrated for being an innovative form of government in the ancient world and a model for contemporary democracy, it was inclusive of only a small portion of the Athenian population and had inherent flaws within the system that ultimately lead to its failure. Although Athens had a direct democracy, participation in the government was heavily restricted. Governmental participation was initially extended to the ordinary citizens of Athens in order to mitigate the resentment of the majority of people towards the aristocratic tier of society. However, women, slaves, and immigrants were excluded from citizenship, and true citizens (men of age with Greek parents) made up only about ten to twenty percent of the population .
