Causes and Effects of The French & 
Indian War (1754 - 1763) 
France and England each wanted to control 
European trade and North America 
Both sides had American Indian allies who 
would raid each other’s settlements 
Both were competing for the Ohio Valley and 
the Great Lakes. 
The English wanted more farmland but the 
French wanted the land for hunting and trading.
Causes and Effects of The French & 
Indian War (1754 - 1763) 
The British felt the French were keeping them from 
moving west. 
George Washington was sent to stop the French 
but was defeated and forced to build a small fort 
called Fort Necessity. 
The French attacked and caused many casualties 
among the colonial militia. 
The French drove the British out of the Ohio 
Valley. 
The attack started the French and Indian War.
Causes and Effects of The French & 
Indian War (1754 - 1763) 
The Treaty of Paris (1763) ended the war. 
The Treaty redrew the political boundaries of 
North America. 
Canada and all French lands east of the 
Mississippi was taken by Britain 
French land west of the Mississippi went to Spain 
Florida became part of the British Colonies 
because Spain supported the French in the war.
Causes and Effects of The French & 
Indian War (1754 - 1763) 
American Indian leaders opposed the spread of 
British settlements. They did not sign the treaty. 
American Indian tribes join together in Pontiac’s 
Rebellion to fight the British 
British economy was weakened due to the money 
spent on the war. 
The Colonists were taxed to help pay for war 
expenses. 
Colonists continue to move westward towards the 
Mississippi river.
