The French and Indian War was a series of conflicts between 1754 and 1763 in which France and Great Britain fought for control of North America. The British had more people and a stronger navy than the French, but the French had forts at strategic points and the support of Indian tribes. A series of battles resulted in defeats for the British until William Pitt became prime minister and implemented new strategies, including replacing old generals, funding colonial soldiers, and attacking Quebec. This led to British victories including the capture of Quebec and Fort Duquesne, resulting in France ceding most of its North American territories to Britain in the Peace of Paris of 1763.
