3. Jamestown 1607
• First group came in search of gold. 144
arrived in 1607
• They did not come prepared for survival.
Gold on the Brain!!!
• Many did not want to work (upper class
gentlemen “in charge”).
• Began trading with Native Americans
4. Jamestown Nearly Fails – The Starving Time
• Settled near a mosquito infested swamp
which made many sick with malaria.
• Conflicts with Native Americans due to
settlers stealing food
• The Starving Time – food shortage, can’t
hunt or farm
• 2nd group arrives in 1609.
5. Jamestown Survives
• Of the 500 original settlers, only 60 remain.
• John ROLFE arrived at the colony with a very profitable crop
would grow well in the area: TOBACCO – cash crop
• The settlers decide to vote for leaders -Virginia House of
Burgesses
– (Representative Government)
• Within 2 years over 1000 more people arrive to farm tobacco
and find work.
• Indentured servants, women, and Slaves arrive (1619).
