Lance Armstrong and Overcoming Obstacles Essays
Pedaling strong through the Pyrenees Mountains at remarkable speed, Lance Armstrong approached
the tenth stage of the Tour de France. Beginning at an elevation of thirty three feet above sea level,
Armstrong was in sixteenth position with five minutes and fifty four seconds separating him and the
leader. For many this would be an insurmountable amount of time to makeup, especially on a stage
containing such a grueling and exhausting climb, but Armstrong saw it as an opportunity to put his
great mountain climbing skills to work (Stein 60). Pacing himself through the majority of the stage, he
remained well behind the leader. Then it happened; he reached the horrendous Mount Hautacam, and
began his eight mile sprint through the rain and up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most grueling climb in Stage 10, Mount Hautacam, was ranked hors de categorie, meaning the
ascent to the top is so steep it cannot be appointed a specific number (Thomsen 42). It is the Tour s
way of saying, You [sic] don t want to know (Murphy 38).
One by one, Lance picked away at his competitors, leaving them with nothing but exhaustion. After a
punishing climb of 4,954 feet over one hundred twenty seven miles,
Armstrong finished Stage 10 with an overall first place. Creating a four minute and fourteen second
margin between him and the previous leader, Armstrong had gained a total of more than ten minutes
during the most grueling stage throughout the entire Tour de France (Stein 60). He then raced through
the remaining stages with great momentum and victoriously broke across the finish line on July 23,
2000 for the second consecutive time since his diagnosis of cancer (Sterling 2; Armstrong, Lance ).
This accomplishment would be remarkable for anyone, but for a cancer survivor to attain such a feat is
extraordinary. Lance Armstrong is indeed an extraordinary human being. He has achieved tremendous
heights not only in the highly competitive world of cycling but also in common, everyday life. To
many he is a champion, to others a role model, but no matter how he s viewed, he is an inspiration to
everyone. After being diagnosed with cancer, Lance Armstrong fought back courageously and showed
the world what a true hero really is.

British Attitudes Of The Slave Trade In Nigeria And Nigeria
Both Britain and Nigeria were competition to have a larger empire. At the beginning of the 19th
century, Britain s main interest was in trade with India, that then had come to dominate by the end of
the 18th century. The British interest in Africa was incidental; ships bound to and from India had to
pass along the African coast where they obtained supplies and occasionally became overloaded or
shipwrecked. Only a few spots in West Africa, like the Gold Coast and the Slave Coast (modern
Nigeria), offered enough profit to make them attractive in their own right, so that by the end of the
Scamble the British occupied only the Gambia, Sierra Leone, the Gold Coast and Nigeria. Naturally,
the British also acquired extensive holdings elsewhere in Africa, notably in Egypt, Kenya and South
Africa, (Howe 89), but in West Africa, most of the territory went to the French. Most British attitudes
about Africa were shaped by their experience with the slave trade. According to The Book of Empire,
The British first became involved in the trade in the 16th century and became major players by the
18th century. Majority of the merchant seaman had seen and or owned slaves at some point of time in
their career in the late 18th century the abolition movement began to introduce Africans and their land
to a wider audience in Great Britain.
Slavery in the Atlantic was always more complex than history books can convey. Most slaves were
forced to work as agricultural laborers, working long hours in

RESULTS The administration of ACZ was well tolerated in all individuals. There were no significant
differences in heart rate (69.3 ± 9.6 vs. 67.2 ± 8.2 bpm, respectively, p = 0.14, paired t test) and mean
arterial pressure (104. 8 ± 10.9 vs. 106.2 ± 10.3 mm Hg, respectively, p = 0.2) between the basal and
the ACZ condition in the whole sample of subjects. Changes in Network Metrics The CBFcorr
network corresponding to the control group (control CBFcorr network), Figures 2.A 2D, showed nine
nodes with concurrent significant increases of Cnodal and SAnodal, five of them located in ventral
medial prefrontal cortices and precunei (Table II). The right precuneus presented the greatest Cnodal

(Figure 4, Supplementary Table S2). Here, the right superior frontal gyrus (dorsolateral part) was the
voxel with the lowest p value (MNI: x, y, z= 18, 53, 37; PFWE = 0.002, T = 5.83). Neither group
showed a significant regional decrease. At global level, there was a significant increase in gCBFACZ
as compared with gCBFBasal in both groups (Control: 42.0 ± 5.5 vs. 54.9 ± 6.3 mL/min/100g; p 10 6;
MCI: 38.9 ± 6.7 vs. 51.1 ± 7.3 mL/min/100g; p 10 6.).The percent of increase in the control group

The Norwegian Health Care System Essay
The health care system of Norway is committed to providing health care services for all citizens
regardless of income and to the principle of equal access to services. Accordingly, the health status of
Norwegians is one of the best in the world, ranking much higher than that of the United States. The
health care system in Norway is organized in three levels: local, regional, and national. The local level
is represented by 434 municipalities; each municipality is responsible for providing all the services
under primary health care to their population. The regional level has the responsibility for specialist
health care and is represented by five regions. The national level is responsible for health care overall
and is managed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hospitals, mental health institutions, drug rehabilitation programs, and such services as laboratory and
radiology are provided by the regional authorities. Each region has an enterprise that is owned by the
state and is fully responsible for providing specialized health care to that regions inhabitants.
Nationally, Norway s parliament serves as the political decision making body for health care. They are
responsible for planning and subsidizing the education of health personnel, they develop and
implement national health policies, and they are responsible for the funding of national health care.
The Norwegian health care system is primarily funded by taxes but is supplemented by state grants
and some user charges. National Insurance Scheme (NIS) was created in 1967 by the Norwegian
government. It is a universal, tax funded, single payer health system that covers 100 percent of the
Norwegian citizens and residents, unless they opt out of it. The health status of the Norwegian
population is considered one of the best in the world; yet, in 2003 Norway only spent 10.3% of their
gross domestic product on health care. (4) The United States spends a much higher percent of our
gross domestic product than Norway, yet our life expectancy in the United States is ranked 27th.
Norway s life expectancy is ranked 14th. The difference in spending is felt to be caused by inflated
prices for health care services in the United States. (3) As

Market Economy
According to Economics: Principles Practices, one of the disadvantages is that it does not provide for
the basic needs of everyone in the society. That is true, but with the assistance from some government
services such as Social Security and Medicare, the people will be helped and still remain free to
purchase and buy what they want. Another disadvantage that is stated is the possibility of economic
failure. The economic could fail if there is not enough competition. In a mixed market economy, the
government helps prevent monopolies and to ensure competition (Economics, pg 39). With the
competition, motivation is created to strive to be successful. The goals that a mixed market economy
is trying to accomplish are economic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A market and a mixed market economy are very similar. They share many advantages and
disadvantages. The main difference is that there is almost no government involvement at all. This
could display and advantage and also disadvantage. The advantage is that the government is not
holding you back by small laws and rules. This could make you wealthier and wealthier and give you
more and more power. There are no restrictions on selling and buying items along with handling them.
This also, however, could be a disadvantage to most people. In a market economy, there is no financial
service that the government runs. In simpler terms, the poor get poorer and poorer. There is no aid you
can get from the government to help you because of the very little government involvement. In a
mixed market economy the producers and consumers decide on the three basic questions in
economics. The questions are what, how, and for whom to produce. Supply and demand answers the
questions. The consumers wants determines what is produce. The producers determine how to produce
it by figuring out the most efficient way to make what the consumers want. For whom to produce it
for is the consumers and whoever is willing to pay for the product. (Economics pgs 6 7) As one can
see, a mixed market economy gives citizens freedom but with the protection of the government. There
are many advantages to this type

Factors Influencing The Collaboration Of The New Testament
LIBERTY UNIVERSITY FACTORS INFLUENCING THE COLLABORATION OF THE NEW
TESTAMENT By Daniel Surmi CHHI 520 05 October, 2014 INTRODUCTION This paper will
examine the internal and external factors which spurred and led to the well known theologian
Athanasius proposing the now existing New Testament books of the Holy Scriptures. The internal
factors that will be examined in this paper include: Docetism, Judaism, Gnosticism, Marcionism,
Montanism, and Apollinarianism. Secondly this paper will view how the false prophets influenced not
only the doctrine of Christ but sought to take advantage of the Church s generous heart for personal
profit and gain. The external factors this paper will evaluate are: the persecution of the church and the
influence of pagan cultures surrounding the Christian Gentiles. The events and topics covered will be
from the 1st to 3rd century AD. Lastly this paper will look at the churches response to these factors as
they will create an authoritative list of writings in which Christians can rest on and use as a foundation
for their belief in Christ. All information and data in this paper is gathered from peer reviewed,
published journals and vetted educational websites. TABLE OF CONTENTS INTERNAL

Purpose Of A Political Cartoon
Political cartoons can be very funny, especially if you understand the issue that they are commenting
on. The main purpose of a political cartoon, is not to amuse, but to persuade. political cartoons are
meant to draw your attention to a specific issue, and more importantly to sway your opinion. The
cartoon provided depicts two police officers, one standing in the back ground holding a sign that says
Texas Voting Rights , the other officer hasboth knees on top of a person of color with his gun drawn.

Phuong Symbolism
In the book The Quiet American Phoung, the beautiful Vietnamese girl caught in a love triangle with
an American spy and a war correspondent, is seen as a commodity, something to be bartered, without
actually taking her feelings into consideration. She is treated as a delicate victim who needs saving by
the men in the book but although it seems like Greene is portraying Phuong as nothing more than an
object, he means for her to represent much more than that. Greene s portrayal of Phuong as an object
represents the treatment of the Vietnamese people in the hands of the Americans. She is meant to be
symbolic of her country, both men, American and British want to possess her, much like the war
raging in Vietnam.
Phuong is treated like an object to be won by the men in The Quiet American. Both Fowler and Pyle
fight for her affections, without truly understanding her. Pyle sees Phuong as being an innocent,
delicate victim that needs to be saved from Fowler who he believes is taking her for granted. That

Even Fowler can see that what Phuong wants is support and comfort not this idea of love and marriage
that Pyle wants. He warns him to stop projecting his American ideals on her. Eventually Phuong ends
up choosing Pyle over Fowler, prompted by her sister who believes the American is more wealthy and
will provide for her. When Pyle is killed she runs back to Fowler, showing us that who she gets that

The Major Psychological Disorders Covered
This final paper looks at summarizing one of the major psychological disorders covered in the course
this semester Thought disorder. It s most commonly manifest in language (e.g. speech or writing) that
is difficult to make sense of, Some people think that thought disorder is a specific problem of
language and others think that it is a more general problem in semantics (meaning) that also leads to
problems in making sense of non verbal events around us. Thought disorders are conditions that affect
the way a person thinks, creating a disturbance in the way a person puts together a logical sequence of
ideas. It is commonly recognized by incoherent or disordered thinking, for example anyone suffering

Thought disorder, or thought disorganization, is a symptom of schizophrenia. Sequeira (2015) asserts

Embryo Diagnosis
Embryo Diagnosis
Karen and Roger have decided to start a family. Again. It has been nearly six years since their first and
only child, Katie, was born, and just over two years since she died. In her four years of life, Katie was
plagued with the fatal Tay sachs disease. Because the enzyme needed to rid her brain of fatty materials
was absent at birth, she lost her sight when she was only eighteen months old. Her ability to operate
the left side of her body was gone several months later.
Understandably, the loss of their daughter devastated the young couple. The difficulty of watching
their little girl suffer and knowing it was their genetic makeup that caused her pain made it harder to
try having another baby. They honestly didn t ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The possibility of predicting not only diseases, but specific traits such as eye color, height, and
intelligence levels makes eugenics very possible and much easier to attain. Not only is eugenics
ethically incorrect, but it will also have a negative effect on our genetic diversity.
Testing embryos for predispositions to certain behavioral tendencies like violence, schizophrenia,
alcoholism, or homosexuality could also lead to unfair destruction. Nurture and environment are also
factors that constitute behavior, as well as genetics.
Once these tests have been performed, there is no guarantee that the results are absolutely written in
stone. It is possible to terminate perfectly healthy embryos and unknowingly implant those with the
dreaded disease. Also, doctors are unable to predict the true extent of the disease. An embryo
diagnosed as positive may develop into a child with less severe symptoms and still be able to lead a
somewhat normal and productive life.
Some wonder about the defective embryos. Their existence is due only to the chance that two people
may have a healthy child, and to destroy them seems cold. Gary D. Hodgen of the Jones Institute has a
response to this concern. We don t for a minute pretend an embryo is paper wad, said Mr. Hodgen. We
know it s a potential human life (Wheeler A10).
A big question being asked by many is who gets the information

In a TQM effort, all members of an organization participate in improving processes, products,
services, and the culture in which they work. The methods for implementing this approach come from

Total quality management can be summarized as a management system for a customer focused

How Corporations Really Reflect Our Demands
Corporations perfectly reflect our demands. We are the corporations. If corporations are evil, then evil
are us (McKeen).
Consumers have heard endless negative stories about American corporations, such as money, power,
and influence converge in corporate America and with these forms of power come opportunities for
greed, exploitation, and abuse (Ferris Stein 335). However, when the consumers compromise with the
corporations power, they unintendedly make these system grow bigger. Conglomerates, anyway, are
also organized by human beings and shaped by American culture. While corporations have strong
influence on the public tastes and opinions, consumers also have strong impacts on them and are the

day of an anti corporations member. With humorous tone, Ecke has illustrated the fact that
corporations also give benefits and advantages to consumers life. The negative feelings, such as
hatred, tend to lead them to reject all bright sides of the problem.
Corporations, nevertheless, are populated by humans, and their employees also demand better lives.
The cliché ridden stories about evil corporations blindfold consumers eyes from positive stories
regarding to corporations genuine charities, philanthropies, and altruism. The story about the Sandler

terrorist attack that destroyed the World Trade Center in New York, this firm suffered catastrophic
losses; sixty six of 171 partners and employees died in the towers, including one of its founders and
key members in the organization. The survivors, including Jimmy Dunne, struggled to get over the

A Rose For Emily Grierson Point Of View
A Rose for Emily follows a first person account of part of Miss Emily Grierson s life leading up to her
death. The narrator talks as if they were speaking for the entire population of Jefferson, but it is more
likely that they are just stating their own opinion on Miss Emily under the guise of the townsfolk. The
point of view in this novel shows an incomplete, or inaccurate opinion on Miss Emily Grierson
because of the narrators own bias. In section 1 the narrator describes Miss Emily as being viewed as a
fallen monument (79) when she died, but when she was alive she was a tradition, a duty and a care
(79). This is the first example the reader gets of the narrators conflicting bias towards Miss Emily. It is
likely that when she was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Four men had snuck onto her property instead of consulting her about it to sprinkle lime around and in
her buildings. When the smell eventually disappears the narrator states that the town began to feel
sorry for her because of the madness that ran in her family. The narrator almost immediately
contradicts himself by stating that it was believed the Griersons held themselves a little too high for
what they really were (81), and that the death of Miss Emily s father was a good thing because now
she would be humanized (81) and would know the thrill and the old despair of a penny more or less
(81). When Miss Emily s father died, she kept his body within the house for as long as possible and
claimed that her father was not dead. Soon after the death, they were about to resort to law, she broke
down and let them bury her father. The narrator becomes sympathetic after, stating that we were
sympathetic towards Miss Emily s grieving process, even saying We did not say she was crazy then.
We believed she had to do that. We remembered all the young men her father had driven away, and we
knew that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which had robbed her, which people will
(81). This shows another inaccurate view of the towns opinion of Miss Emily at this point in time,
because not everyone in Jefferson would share the same opinion nor would everyone believe that she
wasn t crazy. The narrator groups everyone in Jefferson together, making the town as a whole a
character by generalizing what would have been their opinions or

Kipling And Race
The author Rudyard Kipling in his book Kim mentions race almost everywhere possible. Race is
apparently one of the important things to the author. The author at the very beginning of the book
highlights the dark tanned skin of the people as he mentions and I quote burned black as any native .
He also stresses that he himself is white. One things the author masters in his book is mentioning the
race of each and every character in the book. Let s take a look at one of the passages of the book
Though he was burned black as any native; though he spoke the vernacular by preference, and his
mother tongue in a clipped uncertain sing song; though he consorted on terms of perfect equality with
the small boys of the bazar; Kim was white a poor white ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She also points out that she is not fanatic about pure British decent people and goes on to criticize
them strongly by saying that they are worse than pestilence , which means plague. The reason for his
dislike is because these people come straight from Europe to work in the Indian bureaucracy, who just
have bookish knowledge about India and its languages, but lack the real knowledge about India and its
true culture and way of living.
Race therefore is quite important and this is not the only piece of writing that gives so much
importance to race. Orientalist Constructions of India, by Ronald Inden, also stresses upon race and
can be confirmed by the following passage from the book:
And in spite of successive waves of invasion and conquest by Persians, Greeks, Scythians,
Muhammadans, the national development of the life and literature of the Indo Aryan race remained
practically unchecked and unmodified from without down to the era of British occupation. No other
branch of the Indo European stock has experienced an isolated evolution like this. (Inden 426)
In conclusion, race, religion, background, language, sexuality, plays an extremely important role in the
story, if not the most important, and the author clearly emphasizes on it despite contradictory views in

In the Labor Union, many workers advocated for improvements of working conditions. In an excerpt
by Upton Sinclair s The Jungle describes the disgustingness of meatpacking industry and the
horrendous conditions the workers had to be in. Workers had to work at least 16 hours of labor a day
under dreadful working conditions, while being paid low wages. On top of that, many workers would
lose limbs while working; workers would lose their lives at work. The majority of the workers would
be children, due to children not asking for high wages and they are able to get into the machines to
work or fix them. Moreover, an important figure, Albert Parsons, came into the issue by fighting
against the terrible working conditions and demanding less working hour days with a higher wages for
workers. Thus, by the turn of the 20th century late 1800 and early 1900s, labor unions created
restrictions for successful businesses by placing rules that punish the rich on account of striking
against the conditions of work, Albert Parsons actions for less hours and higher wages and Anarchist
rioting. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The idea of striking suggests that strikes punish the rich because it stops production and it is
campaigning to congress that puts on stress. Strikes become a form of restriction for businesses and
the rich by preventing the wealthy from being successful; without workers the businesses can not
succeed. Samuel Gompers introduces the belief of the need to sacrifice for change which is that the
workers are willing to stop working for their rights of better conditions, which can impact their

Reflection Paper On Titanic
Today I chose to watch Titanic for the very first time. I chose to watch Titanic, because I wanted to
know what the movie was really about, maybe I might like the movie. Actually watching the movie
gives you another perspective than just knowing what the setting and theme is about. Many people
looked at me like I was crazy, when I said I had never watched Titanic , and wanted to finally watch it,
and see if I actually would like, so I gave it a chance. My one regret is coming into the movie hating it
and not wanting to enjoy it. I thought that the movie was going to be the worst three hours of my life, I
will never make that mistake coming into a movie already hating it before I even watched it.
I watched the movie on my laptop in my room alone. My experience during the movie was actually
really nice and surprisingly I didn t hate the movie like I said I would. It was a very entertaining movie

The Representations of Femininity in Pride and Prejudice
Jane Austen, one of the most well known 19th century novelists recognized today continues to
captivate people with stories of love and romance through the transformation of her novels into film
and television. All of her novels are about women dealing with romance, courtship, and marriage
during a repressing period. Most of her characters and stories revolve around the lives of the upper
class. It centers on the values, rituals, and manners of high society in England during the Regency Era.
Her most popular novel, Pride and Prejudice published in 1813 maintains the interest of its audiences
as it did almost two centuries earlier as evidenced by its frequent incarnations. In 1995, the British
Broadcasting Corporation produced a six ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This adaptation offers an accurate representation of the story and characters which overall offers a
beautiful visual rich in semiotics for exploration. In Roberta Grandi s article, The Passion Translated:
Literary and Cinematic Rhetoric in Pride and Prejudice, she observes that in an age when naked
bodies are overexposed and sex is common topic of discussion, costume films rediscover a taste for
visual repression. Through the concealment of the bodies and translation of their sensuality into
objects, both voyeuristic and fetishist sensations are enhanced (50) which I believe is the reason
behind the lasting appeal of period dramas. This will keep audiences, especially the younger viewers
today, engaged in the characters conversations, actions and tiny gestures in an attempt to decipher
what the characters truly feel and think as in Grandi s words, if passion is nowhere expressed it means
that passion is concealed everywhere (50). Even if the times had changed and values have become
more progressive compared to that of Jane Austen time, viewers nevertheless enjoy the passion in her

My European Vacation
European Vacation My childhood was filled with weekend road trips with my family traveling to
surrounding states. Sitting in the back of our mini van with my brother watching Scooby Doo is one of
the best memories I have. As my brother and I got older, we started taking bigger trips. The first big
trip my family took was to Disney World, I can still remember the feeling of feeling the plane s wheels
take off the ground. Since then, I have always craved that feeling. Traveling became something that
my family did every year, and every year I looked forward to the week spent just with my family. My
parents have always dreamt about taking my brother and I to Europe. After searching for the perfect
vacation, my mom decided on a 20 day toured trip to Italy, France, Switzerland, and The United
Kingdom. I was ecstatic, since I had been young I had always wanted to go to Paris, and now I got to
experience all of these other countries as well. The day finally came for us to leave on this European
adventure. We were all packed up and heading for our first flight to O Hare International Airport. We
boarded our international plane ready to take on the thirteen hour flight that was ahead of us. The next
morning we arrived at our first destination thousands of miles from home, we were finally in Rome. I
had been familiar with the song, On the Road Again , by Willie Nelson before our European Vacation,
but it was only a song to me then. I never would have thought that the song my

Public Funding should not support Public Schools in Music and Arts
Education is one of the major problems faced by US as a nation and several debates pertaining to
allocation of education funds are underway. The use of public education funds is one such matter
which is debated very highly. The consequences of public education fund s spending are long term
which makes this issue very important. Also, limited availability of public funds makes it essential for

These parents regard playing a musical instrument as a highly difficult and demanding task. This
implies that those students who aim to get good grades with music are likely to receive very poor
grades in other conventional subjects. therefore, should not have compulsory status in public schools
which are funded by taxpayers resources. Further, it is argued that the standard curriculum teaches
abstract reasoning, mathematics, sciences and medicine which has great value, even if the skills
acquired are not, thereafter, directly usable in everyday life. The study of arts and music gives no
practical application. The objective of public education funds must be of helping students to develop
valuable skills for their practical lives. It is believed that the study of mathematics, language, science,
etc. provides both useable knowledge and abstract skills.
The paper discussed why public funds should not support arts and music education and evaluated the
assertion that education for arts and music is a less useful allocation of educational resources than
traditional subjects. It is concluded that the cost for provision of arts and music education in public
school system is very high. Further, it is discussed that eliminating music education from the

Georgia Southwestern State University Essay
During my first semester at Georgia Southwestern State University, I realized that there are several
positive and negative aspects to living on campus. As a student who lives on campus, I observe these
every day. Some aspects are beneficial to students like the fitness center and student organizations
because they help to enhance the health, intellect, and entertainment of life on campus. Some aspects
are not beneficial to students like the lack of cleanliness in the dormitories and the food in the
cafeteria because they prohibit students from enjoying life on campus. I would like to bring attention
to a negative aspect of living on campus because I think that it needs to be improved to make life
easier for students on the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University. The washers and dryers
that are available for the use of students have several issues. I know this because I have used the

The Influence Of Digital Media On The United States Army
The Influence of Digital Media on the United States Army Digital media has integrated itself into
nearly every facet of the modern United States Army. For many years, the Army has increased its
dependency on the use of digital media in day to day operations, training, communications, public
relations, and administrative tasks. Some people claim that we are too dependent on these
technologies for our own good. However, it has helped keep us the most powerful fighting force on
the face of the planet. This case study will look at five functional areas that digital media has

goal of being paperless yet. Finally, around 2012 the Army acquired the technology that included the
digital signature that would allow them to truly go paperless. The technology had existed for five
years, but the Army s slow procurement and distribution process was one of the many lessons learned:
in the digital age, the Army had to move faster and be more flexible to change. This paperless platform
would allow the Army to overhaul all administrative systems. The Publication Directorate stopped
printing paper copies of manuals and regulations, and posted the digital copies to an online library,
where changes could easily be updated. Evaluations could be completed online, signed online, and
submitted online. Leave forms and award recommendations could go from one user to approver with
the click of a button across the world if needed. And promotion boards no longer needed to flip
through endless reams of paper to select candidates just click through digital copies of a file for a
potential promotion candidate. The Army is positioning itself for the future by reducing the number of
people it needs to do the administrative work of the past and train the future administrators in
computer applications for the future. A company 20 years ago traditionally had two

The Original Ancient Olympic Games Essay
The original ancient Olympic Games can be followed back to 776 B.C although per Homer s Iliad
they may have existed as early as the twelfth century BC. The Games proceeded for twelve centuries
and were devoted to Olympian deities. Olympia turned into the site of these memorable ancient
Olympic games that scattered the seeds for the most desired global sporting events of current times,
the Modern Olympics. The location of the Ancient Olympics is situated in the western piece of
Peloponnese. As per Greek mythology, Peloponnese is the island of Pelops, the Founder of the
Olympic Games. The Ancient Olympic Games were sustained until 393 A.D when Emperor
Theodosius I of Rome discontinued them. There were not any Olympic games for fifteen hundred
years before they were resurrected in 1896 in the city of Athens. The man in charge of its resurrection
was a Frenchman named Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who introduced the thought in 1894. His
innovative idea was to uncover the present day Games in 1900 in his local Paris, however appoints
from 34 nations were so captivated with the idea that they persuaded him to move the Games up to
1896 and have Athens serve as the main host.
The antiquated Olympic Games started, when Koroibos, a cook from the close by city of Elis, won the
stadium race, a foot race 600 feet long. This was the only athletic competition of the Olympics for the
initial 13 Olympic games or until 724 BC. The Olympic Games, initially originated to respect Zeus,

Value proposition
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Creating a value proposition is part of business strategy. Kaplan and Norton[1] say Strategy is based
on a differentiated customer value proposition. Satisfying customers is the source of sustainable value
creation.
Developing a value proposition is based on a review and analysis of the benefits, costs and value that
an organization can deliver to itscustomers, prospective customers, and other constituent groups
within and outside the organization. It is also a positioning of value, whereValue = Benefits Cost (cost
includes risk)[2].

Strong value propositions are also expressed from the customer s perspective and talk about the
experiences and benefits that they will have when using the product.
[edit]Competitive Advantage
A product with a successful consumer value proposition is directly linked to a products actual and
sustained performance versus competition. The two main attributes that allow consumers to
differentiate among products are price and quality. Finding the correct balance between these two
attributes usually leads to a successful product. If a company is able to produce the same quality
product as its direct competition but sell it for less, this provides a price value to the consumer.
Similarly, if a company is able to produce a superior quality product for the same or a slightly higher
but acceptable price, the value to the consumer is added through the quality of the product. A product
must offer value through price and/or quality in order to be successful.

satisfaction is achieved when superior customer value is delivered. Establishing a lasting business

The Importance Of Human Rights In Canada
All of humanity has one true factor in common, the claim to be treated within the respectful
parameters of their human rights. Human rights can be defined as the rights in which one is entitled to
due being human and entail the preservation of one s respect, dignity, equality, and freedom. In the
history of Canada, there are many moments in which the government and its people act in protection
of these rights. The establishment of Medicare in Saskatchewan as an example took place on July 1st,
1962 and marked the start of Canada s free healthcare reputation. The provincial government at the
time, Co operative Commonwealth Federation or the CCF party under the leadership of T.C. Douglas,
passing the Medicare Act in Saskatchewan was brought about by the popularity the concept had with
the people. The year of 1971 also contained an event that well framed the conservation of human
rights the implementation of the Canadian Multiculturalism Policy. Canada had already appointed the
Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism in efforts to maintain an equal balance of
British and French elements within the country and the Canadian Multiculturalism Policy was
presented to address the other cultures present in the community that is Canada. The Constitution Act
of 1982 or rather in particular, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is a grand part of Canada
s history with regards to human rights. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms was enacted

The Neurology of Love
The Neurology of Love
Major Research Area The major research area discussed in the selected article is the neurology of love
specifically, the brain activity observed through functional magnetic resonance imaging techniques
(fMRI) observed when study participants viewed images of their long term spouses (Acevedo et al,
2011). This is part of a larger area of research that aims to define and measure the impact that feelings
of love have on the brain and the neurological system, or perhaps the processes and activities in the
brain that are causal of the feelings of romantic love. Research in this area has been undertaken from
many different angles and with a variety of reliable and relevant findings, yet the actual knowledge of
how love works in the brain remains fairly limited (Erwin, 1999; Emanuele et al, 2006). Studies of
initial feelings f romantic love during early stages of attraction, dating, and among newlyweds is
somewhat more extensive and the results verified in numerous studies, however long term love is not
nearly as well researched and appears to be more complex, making it more difficult to state
conclusions with any degree of certainty (Emanuele et al, 2006; Acevedo et al, 2011). Both for
intrinsic reasons and because feelings of love are associated with mating behaviors, in humans as well
as other species, this research areas is highly important (Fisher et al, 2006). Increased dopamine levels

Disadvantages And Disadvantages Of Ngoso In India
A non governmental organization is a non profit, citizen based group that functions independently of
government. NGOs, sometimes called civil societies, are organized on community, national and
international levels to serve specific social or political purposes, and are cooperative, rather than
commercial, in nature. (3) Today there are multiple NGOs registered around the world, heavily in
developing countries. NOGs no matter where they exist they seem to have a nullifying role in the
politics of the host country. In one way they criticize dictatorships and human rights violations. Then
in another way they compete with the radical socio political and religious groups. (8) Their aims range
from providing relief services, conserving the environment, contributing to development projects or
simply battling with governments over human rights issues. While some governments welcome
NGOs, others find them a nuisance or even a threat to their interests. (1)
In India, instead of working productively and moving the country forward to development, the NGOs
are contributing to corruption and to a state of a downward spiral in the country. A few years ago the
government had banned around 833 NGOs and voluntary organizations following misuse of public
funds. Andhra Pradesh, is to be one of the worst states, is said to have the highest percentage of
blacklisted organizations in India closely followed by Bihar and Tamil Nadu. (2)
The disadvantages to rapidly growing NGOs are that they

The Conseption Of Powingder In The Movie Powder And You Re...
Xenophobia came from the Greek word xenos which means a foreigner. According to Healthtopia,
Xenophobia is the condition where the person feels threatened and terror when confronted by a person
with a different background. The movie Powder and You Re Not Alone are example of why we are
afraid of strangers. Not all strangers are bad people. Some strangers you have to look out for and
others could be really good people.
Powder is an albino teenage boy who is very intelligent and was shunned after the death of his last
relative. People started judging and criticizing powder, not even knowing who he was, what he looked
like, or the type of person he was. The special abilities that he had made him an outcast. In the
readings it says, The stranger in town becomes shrouded with suspension. Every action is scrutinized.
Every inaction is a sign of guilt. The writer s argument is, don t judge a book by its cover.
After the death of one of his grandparents, he is discovered and sent to state home where he has
trouble fitting in. His unusual appearance and abilities caused the people in the town to mock and fear
him. Sheriff Barnum s wife, Emma is sick and in a coma and sheriff is unsure of what he should to
help her. Jessie asks Powder to pay Emma a visit to see if he could help. He touches Emma and shares
her thoughts with the sheriff. It becomes clear to Powder that he will fit in with the others, so he runs
away and goes back home. Had they not judged him, they would be able to see the good and potential
in him. The writer/director wants the audience to think that our judgements and criticism shields us
from seeing the good and beauty in someone or something. His point is that we only perceive what is
in front of us. We as people are afraid of strangers because we taught to. The word stranger has a
series of definitions. According to Dictionary.com, A stranger can be a person with whom one has had
no acquaintance, a newcomer in a place or locality. An outsider, or a person who is not a member of
the family, group, community, or a visitor.
The Intended audience seems to be Adults, or anyone into fantasy and mystery movies. The writer s
purpose in writing the film is to persuade or convince the audience to

Review Of My Mind
Before watching Temple Grandin, I only knew of the little details that we had discussed in class, and
hearing stories of parents whom I know that have a child with autism. In my mind autism was
something small , only knowing a little less than a handful of people that have autism or have children
or family members with autism. With my little knowledge of the prominent disorder , the image of
autism were ones of those which I had heard stories, such as little to no speaking, continuous routines,
limited relationships, and anger. To me this was the definition of autism. Then the movie completely
opened my mind to things that I didn t know. Autism is not the same all around, every child s disorder
is different. Right off the bat, the movie really made my mind think. When temple is standing in the
room and looks very tall, and then moves to the other side and she gets smaller. I immediately
compared it to autism, and how just because the image appears one way, doesn t mean all images are
the same. Just as she was tall and got shorter the rage of autism varies, and what you see on the
outside isn t always what is going on the inside. This movie made that point very clear. In the begging
of the movie, temple goes to live with her aunt for the summer before she started college to hep her

as her name on her door so she knows its her room. And if that norm or routine is

Project Organization And Management Structure
Project organization and Management Structure: As the experimental methods are complementary to
each other, but are not critically interdependent, the cooperative design of my research plans will
greatly facilitate my ability to accomplish the specific aims. To monitor the progress and project
quality, I will conduct meetings with Prof. Battaglia on a bi weekly basis, write monthly reports that

Diversity In Alaska
In my opinion, the best place to visit (between Florida and Alaska), would be Alaska. Alaska is not
only vast in terrain, but its wildlife is even more pulchritudinous than Florida. Also, there is culture
that I have not yet learned. New culture brings diversity. By including diversity within our lives we are
opening our minds to a brighter/happier life. Alaska has many places, the most interesting are its
national parks. These national parks are: Wrangell St. Elias National Park, and Glacier Bay National
Park.
First of all, Alaska is a place that has beauty under the ice... A vast land, with its majority of
carnivorous creatures from the size of a spec of dirt, to the largest creatures such as the Orca Whale,
which is also known as the Killer Whale . Wildlife is one of Alaska s many gifts. There are many other

colossal mountains which surround an enormous, and beautiful ocean bay. There are three or more

guides {National Park Service Naturalist}), and boats. The number one place to go when at Glacier
Bay National Park, is to see Margerie Glacier. (glacier grows up to ten feet daily)
In conclusion, I would visit Alaska and its National Park s. There are many, but also, its riveting to go

Raising The Minimum Wage Of The United States
Raise the minimum wage: In the United States, studies show that women tend to make up a
disproportionate share of low wage workers. In the field of education, men tends to go more to STEM
than women and that also leads to high paying jobs for men. If we raise the minimum wage, this will
help hardworking women to support their families. Approximately, women made up two thirds of all
minimum wage workers in 2012. With the current federal minimum wage i.e. $7.25 per hour, someone
working full time, only earn $15,080 a year round. People working full time with minimum wage is
still below the poverty threshold for any family with children and single person is also not far above
the poverty line. So, increasing the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour would help increase the
wages for about 15 million women, which will help close the gender wage gap.
Raise the tipped minimum wage: The gender wage gap is vividly observed in tipped workers. The
federal tipped minimum wage, which hasn t been changed since 1991, only pays workers $2.13 per
hour. According to the Economic Policy Institute, women make up two thirds of tipped workers and
are 70 percent of food servers and bartenders, occupations that comprise more than half of the tipped
workforce. Tipped workers have a higher poverty rate than non tipped workers, and 46 percent rely on
government assistance to make ends meet.
As women account for two thirds of tipped workers, raising tipped minimum wage will help

Essay On Federal Government In Education
Federal Government in Education The State and local government is primarily responsible for funding
education and determining educational policy. The federal government contributes about eight percent
of the funding for education ( Federal Role in Education US Department of Education , 2016). The
federal government s funding typically goes towards programs for children with disabilities or schools
that made adequate yearly progress (AYP). The federal government needs to be more involved in
education because the United States is not number one, when it comes to education. According to the
U.S. News article, the United States is ranked fourth (McPhillips, 2016). In order to improve our
education ranking worldwide, the federal government should be responsible for more funding to
provide better programs, curriculum, and technology for schools. Money runs the world, including
education. The more money spent on education, the more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All districts should have the funding to provide a pre school program. Now that students are expected
to know more coming into Kindergarten, a pre school program should be offered to prepare kids for
school readiness. School districts should also offer a Career and Technical Education program to
prepare students for future career paths. As for Special Education, school districts should have a
functional education program to prepare students for their everyday lives. For example, a community
based program, where students have funding to go out into the community to learn about various
services and places. The program could also incorporate a café that the students could operate or a
home that the students could take care of and learn home maintenance skills. By providing a variety of
programs, we are preparing all students for their future lives after school, whether that be higher
education, vocational education, competitive employment, or independent

Essay on 1950’s Youth Culture
1950 s Youth Culture Youth culture in the nineteen fifties was a time that opened up the world to be
integrated for whites and blacks. In this paper the fifties are analyzed through the clothing, styles, cars,
family life, and most importantly entertainment. Talking to various members of my family I asked
them if they could remember the way that the youth dressed in the nineteen fifties. The responses were
all similar. The popular man role wore tight white T shirts which were described to me (I hate this
expression)as Guinea T s. These are white T shirts in which the manufacturer cut off the sleeves. Also
regular white T shirts were worn with one sleeve rolled up with a pack of cigarettes. When I talked to

ating of fiberglass. The waters were packed and the terms to listen for were hang ten or hangin loose.
There were also the Beatniks. In their depressed outfits and sunglasses they recited poetry and brought
back more of a philosophical look at things. They went and ran underground music stores in which
they could purchase un filtered music. Music that society said rotted their brains. They used their
intellect rather than their physical appearance or coordination. These people served as a spring board
for the hippies in the mid sixties. I had a chance to experience two cars from the fifties and was told
about another. In my dads auto body shop he had a DeSota. I took pictures on my computer camera
and saved them to a disk for your viewing pleasure. The DeSota was all steal and chrome. I even hurt
my hand knocking on the dashboard. The steering wheel was the size of a large pizza, and my dad told
me that they never even heard of power steering at that point. The car was stick shift and the stick was
where the turning signals are. There were also only three gears to put your car into. I opened up the
hood and to my surprise it looked empty. The motor was a very strange rectangular box, and there
appeared to be nothing else under the hood. The seats were bench, and everything inside was very
classy. AM radio was the only option for any input as far as entertainment is concerned. The other car
I looked at was a redone Woody. This car was completely made

Case Of 1928-Olmstead V. United States
1928 Olmstead v.United States Supreme court rules federal investigators can wiretap into suspects
phones legally, and use those conversations as evidence. Roy Olmstead, a suspected bootlegger, was
bugged in the basement of his office, and also in the streets surrounding his home. He was later
convicted based on that evidence. An appeal was raised on the grounds that the wiretapped data
violated the defendant s Fourth and Fifth Amendment. It was decided that the wiretapped data did not
violate the Fifth Amendment, because he was not forced to say anything incriminating, and did not
violate the Fourth Amendment because wiretapping is not considered search and seizure (which would
require a physical search of a person s belongings or possessions.) This event is important because it
decided that wiretapping was legal and did not infringe on the Fourth or Fifth Amendment rights of
criminals, effectively allowing wiretapping to be used in investigation and trial as evidence. In
addition, it defined your Fourth Amendment rights to only apply to physical materials or properties of
yours, not conversations or other non tangible things, and said that since wiretapped individuals were
not forced to discuss incriminating information, the Fifth Amendment protection against self
incrimination did not apply. It set a major precedent that would stand for nearly forty years, when it
was overturned in Katz v. United States. 1945 The predecessor to the NSA receives copies of every

Old Breed At Peleliu And Okinawa Analysis
The nature of warfare is unfathomable to someone who hasn t experienced it. Yet, With The Old Breed
At Peleliu and Okinawa describes every aspect of war. Sledge describes his experience by giving the
reader the idea of what war is like, the ability to picture it in their heads, and evoke some sort of
emotions from his experience when he was there. In order for Sledge to describe the nature of his
experience in the war, he needed to describe the essence of what it was truly like. I asked God Why,
why, why? I turned my face away and wished that I were imagining it all. I had tasted the bitterest
essence of war, the sight of helpless comrades being slaughtered, and it filled me with disgust.
(Sledge). He goes into great detail of the physical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The psychological effects, the mentality of fighting and killing another human, and the sheer
decimation of human values is what makes war atrocious. War is not only fought on the battlefield
though. This book also describes the feelings of a soldier fighting his own demons that war has
brought on. The battle that the soldier has with himself, is almost if not more damaging than the
physical battle of war. He will never forget his experience with battle, no matter how hard he tries the
memories of artillery, blood, and death cannot be erased. I prayed like you to survive, but look at me
now. It is over for us who are dead, but you must struggle, and will carry the memories all your life.
People back home will wonder why you can t forget. (Sledge). This struggle still happens to soldiers
today. Sledge s words of the struggles still captures the effects of warfare that lingers today. The other
effects that war has on the men is the instability that surrounds them at every hour of the day. They are
either engaged in battle having bullets and artillery fired at them, or waiting for battle just so they can
be deposited back in the pressure cooker of survival. Lying in a foxhole sweating out an enemy
artillery or mortar barrage or waiting to dash across open ground under machine gun or artillery fire
defied any concept of time.

Holistic Analysis
Utilizing Elements of Style to Compose Memoir:
1.Identify a big moment in your own life. Ex: The moment the bat hit the ball on the only home run
you hit during the worst baseball season ever!
2.Identify autobiographical significance of it.
3.Identify the tone and mood you want audience to understand from it.
4.Describe it with imagery, tropes, syntax, and schemes. Use these to form your tone, mood, and
connect to your autobiographical significance.
5.Turn in to Unit Two folder.
***Note: This need be no more than a paragraph. Do not write a paper. :D

Student s identifications are somewhat logical and/or methods are somewhat logical and successful.
There may be a disconnect between tone, mood, significance, and chosen methods, or they may be a
lot of telling vs. showing through Style elements. The student identifies a clear and logical moment,
significance, tone, and mood. The student then uses a variety of elements of style to construct the
identified tone, mood, and significance. The methods are logical in that the imagery and diction
connotations are appropriate for tone, mood, and the syntax seeks to emphasize the feelings of the
speaker and affect the reader. The student meets all criteria and does so with particularly varied, vivid
means. Student s use of autobiography methods are strong!

Argumentative Speech About Fraternities
What comes into your mind when you hear the word fraternity ? If you will be given the chance to
join such would you choose to pledge? or not not to pledge? Why yes and why not? Apparently,
everyone have their own perspective when it comes to fraternities. However, originally, fraternities or
fraternal organizations were meant to be an organized society of men associated together in an
environment of companionship and brotherhood. They must be dedicated to the intellectual, physical,
moral, religious, and social development of its members. There are many attributes that fraternities
may or may not have, depending on their structure and purpose. Fraternities can have differing
degrees of secrecy, some form of initiation or ceremony marking admission, formal codes of behavior,
disciplinary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But sometimes, the real essence of having fraternities is being repudiated because of some immoral
acts done within the organization. In the Philippines, the existence of fraternities are not prohibited. In
fact, some are existing as legal organizations carrying the purpose of being an asset within the
community. But in a setting like this in our country where powerful people abuses those who are not
in position to make their stands, where the real meaning of brotherhood is disregarded, I believe that
this is not an appropriate country to dwell with fraternities. The government should abolish fraternities
for they take away the significance of education and morality in the Philippines. It is argued that the
establishments of fraternities bring a very good sense of brotherhood and companionship that leads to
a well organized community. Fraternities started existing wayback because of the strong desire of
people in the Middles Ages to show companionship. Undeniably, they are really intended for good
purposes and until now the arguments between the pros and cons of such organizations exist. First are

  • 2. Lance Armstrong and Overcoming Obstacles Essays Pedaling strong through the Pyrenees Mountains at remarkable speed, Lance Armstrong approached the tenth stage of the Tour de France. Beginning at an elevation of thirty three feet above sea level, Armstrong was in sixteenth position with five minutes and fifty four seconds separating him and the leader. For many this would be an insurmountable amount of time to makeup, especially on a stage containing such a grueling and exhausting climb, but Armstrong saw it as an opportunity to put his great mountain climbing skills to work (Stein 60). Pacing himself through the majority of the stage, he remained well behind the leader. Then it happened; he reached the horrendous Mount Hautacam, and began his eight mile sprint through the rain and up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most grueling climb in Stage 10, Mount Hautacam, was ranked hors de categorie, meaning the ascent to the top is so steep it cannot be appointed a specific number (Thomsen 42). It is the Tour s way of saying, You [sic] don t want to know (Murphy 38). One by one, Lance picked away at his competitors, leaving them with nothing but exhaustion. After a punishing climb of 4,954 feet over one hundred twenty seven miles, Armstrong finished Stage 10 with an overall first place. Creating a four minute and fourteen second margin between him and the previous leader, Armstrong had gained a total of more than ten minutes during the most grueling stage throughout the entire Tour de France (Stein 60). He then raced through the remaining stages with great momentum and victoriously broke across the finish line on July 23, 2000 for the second consecutive time since his diagnosis of cancer (Sterling 2; Armstrong, Lance ). This accomplishment would be remarkable for anyone, but for a cancer survivor to attain such a feat is extraordinary. Lance Armstrong is indeed an extraordinary human being. He has achieved tremendous heights not only in the highly competitive world of cycling but also in common, everyday life. To many he is a champion, to others a role model, but no matter how he s viewed, he is an inspiration to everyone. After being diagnosed with cancer, Lance Armstrong fought back courageously and showed the world what a true hero really is. Throughout the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. British Attitudes Of The Slave Trade In Nigeria And Nigeria Both Britain and Nigeria were competition to have a larger empire. At the beginning of the 19th century, Britain s main interest was in trade with India, that then had come to dominate by the end of the 18th century. The British interest in Africa was incidental; ships bound to and from India had to pass along the African coast where they obtained supplies and occasionally became overloaded or shipwrecked. Only a few spots in West Africa, like the Gold Coast and the Slave Coast (modern Nigeria), offered enough profit to make them attractive in their own right, so that by the end of the Scamble the British occupied only the Gambia, Sierra Leone, the Gold Coast and Nigeria. Naturally, the British also acquired extensive holdings elsewhere in Africa, notably in Egypt, Kenya and South Africa, (Howe 89), but in West Africa, most of the territory went to the French. Most British attitudes about Africa were shaped by their experience with the slave trade. According to The Book of Empire, The British first became involved in the trade in the 16th century and became major players by the 18th century. Majority of the merchant seaman had seen and or owned slaves at some point of time in their career in the late 18th century the abolition movement began to introduce Africans and their land to a wider audience in Great Britain. Slavery in the Atlantic was always more complex than history books can convey. Most slaves were forced to work as agricultural laborers, working long hours in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Norwegian Health Care System Essay The health care system of Norway is committed to providing health care services for all citizens regardless of income and to the principle of equal access to services. Accordingly, the health status of Norwegians is one of the best in the world, ranking much higher than that of the United States. The health care system in Norway is organized in three levels: local, regional, and national. (4) The United States spends a much higher percent of our gross domestic product than Norway, yet our life expectancy in the United States is ranked 27th. Norway s life expectancy is ranked 14th. The difference in spending is felt to be caused by inflated prices for health care services in the United States. (3) As ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That is true, but with the assistance from some government services such as Social Security and Medicare, the people will be helped and still remain free to purchase and buy what they want. Another disadvantage that is stated is the possibility of economic failure. The economic could fail if there is not enough competition. The advantage is that the government is not holding you back by small laws and rules. This could make you wealthier and wealthier and give you more and more power. There are no restrictions on selling and buying items along with handling them. This also, however, could be a disadvantage to most people. In a market economy, there is no financial service that the government runs. In simpler terms, the poor get poorer and poorer. There is no aid you can get from the government to help you because of the very little government involvement. In a mixed market economy the producers and consumers decide on the three basic questions in economics. The questions are what, how, and for whom to produce. Supply and demand answers the questions. The consumers wants determines what is produce. The producers determine how to produce it by figuring out the most efficient way to make what the consumers want. For whom to produce it for is the consumers and whoever is willing to pay for the product. • 9. Phuong Symbolism In the book The Quiet American Phoung, the beautiful Vietnamese girl caught in a love triangle with an American spy and a war correspondent, is seen as a commodity, something to be bartered, without actually taking her feelings into consideration. She is treated as a delicate victim who needs saving by the men in the book but although it seems like Greene is portraying Phuong as nothing more than an object, he means for her to represent much more than that. Greene s portrayal of Phuong as an object represents the treatment of the Vietnamese people in the hands of the Americans. She is meant to be symbolic of her country, both men, American and British want to possess her, much like the war raging in Vietnam. Phuong is treated like an object to be won by the men in The Quiet American. Both Fowler and Pyle fight for her affections, without truly understanding her. Pyle sees Phuong as being an innocent, delicate victim that needs to be saved from Fowler who he believes is taking her for granted. The possibility of predicting not only diseases, but specific traits such as eye color, height, and intelligence levels makes eugenics very possible and much easier to attain. Not only is eugenics ethically incorrect, but it will also have a negative effect on our genetic diversity. Testing embryos for predispositions to certain behavioral tendencies like violence, schizophrenia, alcoholism, or homosexuality could also lead to unfair destruction. Nurture and environment are also factors that constitute behavior, as well as genetics. Once these tests have been performed, there is no guarantee that the results are absolutely written in stone. It is possible to terminate perfectly healthy embryos and unknowingly implant those with the dreaded disease. Also, doctors are unable to predict the true extent of the disease. An embryo diagnosed as positive may develop into a child with less severe symptoms and still be able to lead a somewhat normal and productive life. Some wonder about the defective embryos. Their existence is due only to the chance that two people may have a healthy child, and to destroy them seems cold. Gary D. Hodgen of the Jones Institute has a response to this concern. We don t for a minute pretend an embryo is paper wad, said Mr. Hodgen. We know it s a potential human life (Wheeler A10). A big question being asked by many is who gets the information ... Consumers have heard endless negative stories about American corporations, such as money, power, and influence converge in corporate America and with these forms of power come opportunities for greed, exploitation, and abuse (Ferris Stein 335). However, when the consumers compromise with the corporations power, they unintendedly make these system grow bigger. The narrator talks as if they were speaking for the entire population of Jefferson, but it is more likely that they are just stating their own opinion on Miss Emily under the guise of the townsfolk. The point of view in this novel shows an incomplete, or inaccurate opinion on Miss Emily Grierson because of the narrators own bias. In section 1 the narrator describes Miss Emily as being viewed as a fallen monument (79) when she died, but when she was alive she was a tradition, a duty and a care (79). When Miss Emily s father died, she kept his body within the house for as long as possible and claimed that her father was not dead. Soon after the death, they were about to resort to law, she broke down and let them bury her father. The narrator becomes sympathetic after, stating that we were sympathetic towards Miss Emily s grieving process, even saying We did not say she was crazy then. We believed she had to do that. We remembered all the young men her father had driven away, and we knew that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which had robbed her, which people will (81). This shows another inaccurate view of the towns opinion of Miss Emily at this point in time, because not everyone in Jefferson would share the same opinion nor would everyone believe that she wasn t crazy. • 18. Kipling And Race The author Rudyard Kipling in his book Kim mentions race almost everywhere possible. Race is apparently one of the important things to the author. The author at the very beginning of the book highlights the dark tanned skin of the people as he mentions and I quote burned black as any native . He also stresses that he himself is white. One things the author masters in his book is mentioning the race of each and every character in the book. Let s take a look at one of the passages of the book Though he was burned black as any native; though he spoke the vernacular by preference, and his mother tongue in a clipped uncertain sing song; though he consorted on terms of perfect equality with the small boys of the bazar; Kim was white a poor white ... She also points out that she is not fanatic about pure British decent people and goes on to criticize them strongly by saying that they are worse than pestilence , which means plague. The reason for his dislike is because these people come straight from Europe to work in the Indian bureaucracy, who just have bookish knowledge about India and its languages, but lack the real knowledge about India and its true culture and way of living. Race therefore is quite important and this is not the only piece of writing that gives so much importance to race. Orientalist Constructions of India, by Ronald Inden, also stresses upon race and can be confirmed by the following passage from the book: And in spite of successive waves of invasion and conquest by Persians, Greeks, Scythians, Muhammadans, the national development of the life and literature of the Indo Aryan race remained practically unchecked and unmodified from without down to the era of British occupation. No other branch of the Indo European stock has experienced an isolated evolution like this. • 19. Summary Of The Jungle By Upton Sinclair In the Labor Union, many workers advocated for improvements of working conditions. In an excerpt by Upton Sinclair s The Jungle describes the disgustingness of meatpacking industry and the horrendous conditions the workers had to be in. Workers had to work at least 16 hours of labor a day under dreadful working conditions, while being paid low wages. On top of that, many workers would lose limbs while working; workers would lose their lives at work. The majority of the workers would be children, due to children not asking for high wages and they are able to get into the machines to work or fix them. Moreover, an important figure, Albert Parsons, came into the issue by fighting against the terrible working conditions and demanding less working hour days with a higher wages for workers. Thus, by the turn of the 20th century late 1800 and early 1900s, labor unions created restrictions for successful businesses by placing rules that punish the rich on account of striking against the conditions of work, Albert Parsons actions for less hours and higher wages and Anarchist rioting. ... The Representations of Femininity in Pride and Prejudice Jane Austen, one of the most well known 19th century novelists recognized today continues to captivate people with stories of love and romance through the transformation of her novels into film and television. Through the concealment of the bodies and translation of their sensuality into objects, both voyeuristic and fetishist sensations are enhanced (50) which I believe is the reason behind the lasting appeal of period dramas. This will keep audiences, especially the younger viewers today, engaged in the characters conversations, actions and tiny gestures in an attempt to decipher what the characters truly feel and think as in Grandi s words, if passion is nowhere expressed it means that passion is concealed everywhere (50). Sitting in the back of our mini van with my brother watching Scooby Doo is one of the best memories I have. As my brother and I got older, we started taking bigger trips. The first big trip my family took was to Disney World, I can still remember the feeling of feeling the plane s wheels take off the ground. Since then, I have always craved that feeling. The Original Ancient Olympic Games Essay The original ancient Olympic Games can be followed back to 776 B.C although per Homer s Iliad they may have existed as early as the twelfth century BC. The Games proceeded for twelve centuries and were devoted to Olympian deities. Olympia turned into the site of these memorable ancient Olympic games that scattered the seeds for the most desired global sporting events of current times, the Modern Olympics. The location of the Ancient Olympics is situated in the western piece of Peloponnese. As per Greek mythology, Peloponnese is the island of Pelops, the Founder of the Olympic Games. The Ancient Olympic Games were sustained until 393 A.D when Emperor Theodosius I of Rome discontinued them. There were not any Olympic games for fifteen hundred years before they were resurrected in 1896 in the city of Athens. The man in charge of its resurrection was a Frenchman named Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who introduced the thought in 1894. Human rights can be defined as the rights in which one is entitled to due being human and entail the preservation of one s respect, dignity, equality, and freedom. In the history of Canada, there are many moments in which the government and its people act in protection of these rights. The establishment of Medicare in Saskatchewan as an example took place on July 1st, 1962 and marked the start of Canada s free healthcare reputation. The provincial government at the time, Co operative Commonwealth Federation or the CCF party under the leadership of T.C. Douglas, passing the Medicare Act in Saskatchewan was brought about by the popularity the concept had with the people. The Neurology of Love The Neurology of Love Major Research Area The major research area discussed in the selected article is the neurology of love specifically, the brain activity observed through functional magnetic resonance imaging techniques (fMRI) observed when study participants viewed images of their long term spouses (Acevedo et al, 2011). This is part of a larger area of research that aims to define and measure the impact that feelings of love have on the brain and the neurological system, or perhaps the processes and activities in the brain that are causal of the feelings of romantic love. Research in this area has been undertaken from many different angles and with a variety of reliable and relevant findings, yet the actual knowledge of how love works in the brain remains fairly limited (Erwin, 1999; Emanuele et al, 2006). Studies of initial feelings f romantic love during early stages of attraction, dating, and among newlyweds is somewhat more extensive and the results verified in numerous studies, however long term love is not nearly as well researched and appears to be more complex, making it more difficult to state conclusions with any degree of certainty (Emanuele et al, 2006; Acevedo et al, 2011). (3) Today there are multiple NGOs registered around the world, heavily in developing countries. NOGs no matter where they exist they seem to have a nullifying role in the politics of the host country. In one way they criticize dictatorships and human rights violations. Then in another way they compete with the radical socio political and religious groups. While some governments welcome NGOs, others find them a nuisance or even a threat to their interests. • 33. The Conseption Of Powingder In The Movie Powder And You Re... Xenophobia came from the Greek word xenos which means a foreigner. According to Healthtopia, Xenophobia is the condition where the person feels threatened and terror when confronted by a person with a different background. The movie Powder and You Re Not Alone are example of why we are afraid of strangers. Not all strangers are bad people. Some strangers you have to look out for and others could be really good people. Powder is an albino teenage boy who is very intelligent and was shunned after the death of his last relative. People started judging and criticizing powder, not even knowing who he was, what he looked like, or the type of person he was. The special abilities that he had made him an outcast. In the readings it says, The stranger in town becomes shrouded with suspension. Every action is scrutinized. Every inaction is a sign of guilt. The writer s argument is, don t judge a book by its cover. After the death of one of his grandparents, he is discovered and sent to state home where he has trouble fitting in. His unusual appearance and abilities caused the people in the town to mock and fear him. Sheriff Barnum s wife, Emma is sick and in a coma and sheriff is unsure of what he should to help her. Jessie asks Powder to pay Emma a visit to see if he could help. He touches Emma and shares her thoughts with the sheriff. It becomes clear to Powder that he will fit in with the others, so he runs away and goes back home. Had they not judged him, they would be able to see the good and potential in him. The writer/director wants the audience to think that our judgements and criticism shields us from seeing the good and beauty in someone or something. His point is that we only perceive what is in front of us. We as people are afraid of strangers because we taught to. The word stranger has a series of definitions. According to Dictionary.com, A stranger can be a person with whom one has had no acquaintance, a newcomer in a place or locality. • 40. Raising The Minimum Wage Of The United States Raise the minimum wage: In the United States, studies show that women tend to make up a disproportionate share of low wage workers. In the field of education, men tends to go more to STEM than women and that also leads to high paying jobs for men. If we raise the minimum wage, this will help hardworking women to support their families. Approximately, women made up two thirds of all minimum wage workers in 2012. With the current federal minimum wage i.e. $7.25 per hour, someone working full time, only earn $15,080 a year round. People working full time with minimum wage is still below the poverty threshold for any family with children and single person is also not far above the poverty line. So, increasing the federal minimum wage to $10.10 an hour would help increase the wages for about 15 million women, which will help close the gender wage gap. Raise the tipped minimum wage: The gender wage gap is vividly observed in tipped workers. The federal tipped minimum wage, which hasn t been changed since 1991, only pays workers $2.13 per hour. According to the Economic Policy Institute, women make up two thirds of tipped workers and are 70 percent of food servers and bartenders, occupations that comprise more than half of the tipped workforce. Tipped workers have a higher poverty rate than non tipped workers, and 46 percent rely on government assistance to make ends meet. As women account for two thirds of tipped workers, raising tipped minimum wage will help decreasing the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Essay On Federal Government In Education Federal Government in Education The State and local government is primarily responsible for funding education and determining educational policy. The federal government contributes about eight percent of the funding for education ( Federal Role in Education US Department of Education , 2016). The federal government s funding typically goes towards programs for children with disabilities or schools that made adequate yearly progress (AYP). The federal government needs to be more involved in education because the United States is not number one, when it comes to education. According to the U.S. News article, the United States is ranked fourth (McPhillips, 2016). In order to improve our education ranking worldwide, the federal government should be responsible for more funding to provide better programs, curriculum, and technology for schools. All districts should have the funding to provide a pre school program. Now that students are expected to know more coming into Kindergarten, a pre school program should be offered to prepare kids for school readiness. School districts should also offer a Career and Technical Education program to prepare students for future career paths. As for Special Education, school districts should have a functional education program to prepare students for their everyday lives. For example, a community based program, where students have funding to go out into the community to learn about various services and places. The program could also incorporate a café that the students could operate or a home that the students could take care of and learn home maintenance skills. • 42. Essay on 1950’s Youth Culture 1950 s Youth Culture Youth culture in the nineteen fifties was a time that opened up the world to be integrated for whites and blacks. In this paper the fifties are analyzed through the clothing, styles, cars, family life, and most importantly entertainment. Talking to various members of my family I asked them if they could remember the way that the youth dressed in the nineteen fifties. The responses were all similar. The popular man role wore tight white T shirts which were described to me (I hate this expression)as Guinea T s. These are white T shirts in which the manufacturer cut off the sleeves. Also regular white T shirts were worn with one sleeve rolled up with a pack of cigarettes. When I talked to a man in my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... ating of fiberglass. They used their intellect rather than their physical appearance or coordination. These people served as a spring board for the hippies in the mid sixties. I had a chance to experience two cars from the fifties and was told about another. In my dads auto body shop he had a DeSota. I took pictures on my computer camera and saved them to a disk for your viewing pleasure. The DeSota was all steal and chrome. I even hurt my hand knocking on the dashboard. The steering wheel was the size of a large pizza, and my dad told me that they never even heard of power steering at that point. The car was stick shift and the stick was where the turning signals are. There were also only three gears to put your car into. I opened up the hood and to my surprise it looked empty. The motor was a very strange rectangular box, and there appeared to be nothing else under the hood. The seats were bench, and everything inside was very classy. • 43. Case Of 1928-Olmstead V. United States 1928 Olmstead v.United States Supreme court rules federal investigators can wiretap into suspects phones legally, and use those conversations as evidence. Roy Olmstead, a suspected bootlegger, was bugged in the basement of his office, and also in the streets surrounding his home. He was later convicted based on that evidence. An appeal was raised on the grounds that the wiretapped data violated the defendant s Fourth and Fifth Amendment. It was decided that the wiretapped data did not violate the Fifth Amendment, because he was not forced to say anything incriminating, and did not violate the Fourth Amendment because wiretapping is not considered search and seizure (which would require a physical search of a person s belongings or possessions.) This event is important because it decided that wiretapping was legal and did not infringe on the Fourth or Fifth Amendment rights of criminals, effectively allowing wiretapping to be used in investigation and trial as evidence. In addition, it defined your Fourth Amendment rights to only apply to physical materials or properties of yours, not conversations or other non tangible things, and said that since wiretapped individuals were not forced to discuss incriminating information, the Fifth Amendment protection against self incrimination did not apply. It set a major precedent that would stand for nearly forty years, when it was overturned in Katz v. United States. 1945 The predecessor to the NSA receives copies of every ... Yet, With The Old Breed At Peleliu and Okinawa describes every aspect of war. Sledge describes his experience by giving the reader the idea of what war is like, the ability to picture it in their heads, and evoke some sort of emotions from his experience when he was there. In order for Sledge to describe the nature of his experience in the war, he needed to describe the essence of what it was truly like. I asked God Why, why, why? I turned my face away and wished that I were imagining it all. I had tasted the bitterest essence of war, the sight of helpless comrades being slaughtered, and it filled me with disgust. (Sledge). The psychological effects, the mentality of fighting and killing another human, and the sheer decimation of human values is what makes war atrocious. War is not only fought on the battlefield though. This book also describes the feelings of a soldier fighting his own demons that war has brought on. The battle that the soldier has with himself, is almost if not more damaging than the physical battle of war. He will never forget his experience with battle, no matter how hard he tries the memories of artillery, blood, and death cannot be erased. I prayed like you to survive, but look at me now. It is over for us who are dead, but you must struggle, and will carry the memories all your life. People back home will wonder why you can t forget. (Sledge). This struggle still happens to soldiers today. Sledge s words of the struggles still captures the effects of warfare that lingers today. The other effects that war has on the men is the instability that surrounds them at every hour of the day. They are either engaged in battle having bullets and artillery fired at them, or waiting for battle just so they can be deposited back in the pressure cooker of survival. Lying in a foxhole sweating out an enemy artillery or mortar barrage or waiting to dash across open ground under machine gun or artillery fire defied any concept of time. ... If you will be given the chance to join such would you choose to pledge? or not not to pledge? Why yes and why not? Apparently, everyone have their own perspective when it comes to fraternities. In the Philippines, the existence of fraternities are not prohibited. In fact, some are existing as legal organizations carrying the purpose of being an asset within the community. But in a setting like this in our country where powerful people abuses those who are not in position to make their stands, where the real meaning of brotherhood is disregarded, I believe that this is not an appropriate country to dwell with fraternities. The government should abolish fraternities for they take away the significance of education and morality in the Philippines. It is argued that the establishments of fraternities bring a very good sense of brotherhood and companionship that leads to a well organized community. Fraternities started existing wayback because of the strong desire of people in the Middles Ages to show companionship. Undeniably, they are really intended for good purposes and until now the arguments between the pros and cons of such organizations exist. First are for those ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
